- 0:00Speaker 1: Every Day Football at four powered by the Inside the
- 0:02Mergs podcast. Adam Kaplan's here today and don't forget you
- 0:05can get the Inside of the Mergs podcast on all podcasting platforms. Today,
- 0:09Adam Kaplan joins us for a dive on the Eagles
- 0:13as they get ready for the Rams. We get past
- 0:15the Chiefs, we'll see what the team looks like on
- 0:17both offense and defense after two weeks we heard from
- 0:20both coordinators. Today, let's bring in Adam Caplan now to
- 0:24talk a little bit about this two and zero Eagles team.
- 0:27And I don't know. This team obviously has some offensive
- 0:30issues so far to start this season, but the defense
- 0:33looks pretty good. Adam, what's going on? Man?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Mike, I'd say that's pretty accurate. But let
- 0:39me go. Let me take a deep dive, Mike. That's
- 0:41really what today is going to be about. And we'll
- 0:44talk a little bit about the Rams, and then we'll
- 0:46talk with the matchup on Friday, which by the way,
- 0:48is fascinating. Nick year, any three and zero against the
- 0:51Rams and obviously they beat them twice last year, but
- 0:53which are pretty good. They are not a lot of
- 0:55teams that are two and oh. But It's kind of
- 0:57cool that this game Sunnay, which not prime time, Mike,
- 1:00the Rams have to come in and remember that to
- 1:03three hour time difference. But getting back to where we
- 1:06are here, So the Eagles are two, and now I'll
- 1:08let we'll get started an offense, and now I will
- 1:10let you know Michael. On tomorrow's Inside of the Tape
- 1:13with Greg go sell mee. Jeff and Greg, we talk
- 1:16about the offensive struggles. We talked about this on the
- 1:19postgame show. Some peoplebout always making excuses for Hurts, but
- 1:22let me just explain, and you hear us talk about
- 1:24it tomorrow. We've seen this from her tent. He holds
- 1:27onto the ball too long and he's indecisive. But you're
- 1:31talking to coaches over the years sometimes and I Greg
- 1:34made a really good point because I brought up that
- 1:38Hurts has had six different play callers. People forget his
- 1:41first play caller was Doug Peterson the year one and
- 1:45twenty twenty. We forget about that. Hearing at a different voice.
- 1:48Greg had it because I know Greg, I know some
- 1:50of the people he speaks with. The three of us
- 1:52talked a lot of coordinators and coaches over the year,
- 1:54so We're just trying to give context. We try to
- 1:57give one of the things that we do on Inside
- 1:59the Birds as we give content, not a lot of
- 2:01blanket statements. We try to explain why things happen, so
- 2:03we educate people. And look, it's only two weeks. Yes,
- 2:06the passing offense has been awful. I mean, we're not
- 2:08going to sugarcoat it's been bad. Now. Goddard, who Hurts
- 2:11hooked up with seven times a week, one didn't play
- 2:14last week. The middle of the offense. There are some
- 2:16place where Hurts didn't pull the trigger over the middle,
- 2:18not many. It was actually Mike, which is so rare
- 2:22for him. There are plays to make downfield where you
- 2:25know he usually gets those big eyes like all guys
- 2:27who have loved to throw on the ball downfield. He
- 2:29only made the one throw, and obviously that was a
- 2:31great throw. I don't know what happened. They're just Mike.
- 2:35I think sometimes we send this from Hurts where he
- 2:38doesn't pull the trigger. He overthinks, like by the way,
- 2:41a lot of quarterbacks do. The one criticism I have
- 2:43though for Kevin Patulo and I have the same criticism
- 2:47at calim Moorny. He eventually correct it when your quarterback
- 2:51is not pulling the trigger. And Ron Jewski taught me
- 2:54this when i'd watched tape with Greco Sell and Ron
- 2:56for about ten years. Ron said, when he would struggle
- 2:59pulling the trigger, whoever his play caller would be, they
- 3:02they'd get it out of his hands at one point five,
- 3:04Get out of his hands, get him accurate, get him comfortable.
- 3:08If he had and I get that Goddard's not there,
- 3:10that's certainly a problem. Well, you got to scheme these guys.
- 3:13They'll get it out of his hands whatever forever reason
- 3:17Hurts seems to be overthinking or not pulling the trigger,
- 3:19help your quarterback out the route combinations. They look very
- 3:23much like last year. The play calling is not why
- 3:25their offense. For fans love to criticize stuff they don't understand.
- 3:30It had nothing to do with why Hurts wouldn't throw
- 3:32the football. It's on Jalen get rid of it. But
- 3:34but Kevin Batilla is going to help him a little bit,
- 3:37get out of his hands faster.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean there was We talked about this yesterday
- 3:41with Jeff and I want to follow up with you.
- 3:42It looked like the offensive line did a pretty good
- 3:45job and giving him protection. Now, watching that on TV
- 3:48is a lot different than you know, watching the All
- 3:50twenty two. We're seeing it from a press box where
- 3:52you can see the routes and who's open and who's not.
- 3:55But he seemed to have the protection it is, and.
- 3:58Speaker 2: You know, look early on it was a little challenge
- 4:00with Spags coming with bringing in his variety of what
- 4:04we call designer blitzes. He has his own way of
- 4:08doing it, and the Eagles adjusted really well. And look,
- 4:11they hurts had plenty of times. So the good thing
- 4:14is and we'll talk more about this Friday, but this
- 4:17is a team in the Rams. They know, they know
- 4:20how to protect. The Rams are a speed pass rushing team.
- 4:23They have a very small defensive line. They're very active.
- 4:25They're really well coaching Chris Shula. But Eagles matchup well
- 4:30against them. But let's get to defense now. I don't
- 4:34it's way too I know the media loves asking these questions.
- 4:37Well are they head of where you thought they'd be.
- 4:39They've played two games, folks. The first half against Dallas,
- 4:43the defense did not play well. Ever since then they've
- 4:45been good. Now, the second half was when there was
- 4:48an hour delay with the weather. As we know, against
- 4:50Dallas last week, they played really well, saved two coverage
- 4:53bus By the way, listen, if Kelsey catches that ball
- 5:00and certain things happened, maybe the defense didn't play as well.
- 5:03You know, we mayn't have that discussion, but in fact,
- 5:05the matter, the results are the results. They played well.
- 5:09I told you for the season started, Mike, I'm gonna
- 5:11say this again, I'm not criticizing kind of like anything
- 5:16that's happened, you can't predict the injuries, but when Nikoby
- 5:21Deane comes back, you won't not be starting. I told
- 5:22you that before the season started. I said, if job
- 5:25Cambill plays well, it won't matter. If Nikobe Deane looks
- 5:28like his old self, it'll be irrelevant because Job kampl
- 5:31was a first round pick. And by the way, now
- 5:33I'll say this thing, he's definitely had a schedule. From
- 5:36a mental standpoint, I know from what we knew about
- 5:39his college tape wasn't very instinctive. He is well ahead
- 5:43of where I honestly I didn't think he played this well.
- 5:46I am kind of surprised. Now, you got to give
- 5:48Bobby King, they're outstanding linebacker's coach Mike, you're gonna hear
- 5:52Greg and I and Jeff talk about this. This coaching staff,
- 5:55particularly defensively, is absolutely off the charts. Mike. Look how
- 5:59bad it was two years We forget about how bad
- 6:01it was in twenty three.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you what. You're taking a deep dive
- 6:04on this defense. And you know they got six to
- 6:08sacks in the game in the Super Bowl against the Chiefs.
- 6:10They didn't blitz it all. They blitched eleven times in
- 6:13this game. It's kind of tells me they had no
- 6:15respect for the Kansas City offense. Can get down the field.
- 6:18Speaker 2: On them, yes, but also vic New coming in. Their
- 6:21pass rush was not very good against Dallas. You forget
- 6:25there were four drops in that game. What was critical
- 6:27would have been a touchdown. Okay, think about a cdee
- 6:30Lamb doesn't have those those those other drops. Jake Ferkson
- 6:33drop one with Tribe when their titan would have been
- 6:36a touchdown. So let's let's be real here, Mike. Context matters.
- 6:40So vic New they didn't get enough pressure, Well they did,
- 6:43they did. He brought seven blitzers in the first half.
- 6:45I couldn't believe it. You know, this is he is special.
- 6:48How great is Fandrio by the way, I mean for
- 6:51all the knucklehead like the Dolphins players, who could have
- 6:54they buried Fanrio publicly? Yeah, and then the fans, See,
- 6:58the fans didn't know any better, They didn't really know
- 7:00what was going on, so they were like killing vic
- 7:02on on social media. How do you think those people
- 7:05feel now?
- 7:05Speaker 1: By the way, Well, I'll tell you what. You very
- 7:07good and you can see why the Dolphins are the
- 7:10way they are. They're complaining about a guy like Nick
- 7:11Fangio and look where their team is now. I mean,
- 7:14that's you thinking that just doesn't want to be coached.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Great put Mike, he listened. He demands a lot. Yeah,
- 7:21we brought this up last year. They had a similarity
- 7:23between him and Jim Johnson, the late great my favorite
- 7:25coach to cover here in Philly. Vic is awesome. I
- 7:27don't know the guy personally, I've not been around him,
- 7:29but I knew a guy who coached for him in Denver.
- 7:33He coaches hard, by the way, demand, he's demanding. That's
- 7:35why you see a lot, not a lot. Some of
- 7:37his former assistants from over the years are with him.
- 7:39Clint Hart, who add in Chicago. I just cannot rave
- 7:42enough about this defensive coach, this defensive staff, not us, Vic,
- 7:48Clint Hurt, Bobby King, Christian Parker, the safeties coach, Joe
- 7:55Casper's phenomenal who might be a defensive coordinator someday. So
- 7:59you look, we could talk all we want about. Oh well,
- 8:02it's it's the players. Okay, you can't be great without
- 8:04great players, right, But this staff, and you got to
- 8:07give fans, you got to give Roseman and Siriani put
- 8:11together this thing, and they've done a phenomenal job assembling well.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And the last thing before we move to a couple
- 8:16other things. You did see Zadaria Smith as much as
- 8:19he thought more And what kind of role do we have?
- 8:22Speaker 2: Jeff and I said, we thought he'd play. We had
- 8:25no idea he'd play thirty stamp thirty a third of
- 8:27the defensive stamp. So like Vic Eddings, right, you don't know,
- 8:30but you could say, oh, you want it all, this
- 8:31guy might be ready. You don't know that until he practices.
- 8:34He came in a really good physical shape. Bob Way
- 8:36was in the low nineties. We talked about this Friday
- 8:38show when I Greg Kosell did not know the weather report. Yeh,
- 8:41mister Weather. I'm like, guys, you won't believe this, but
- 8:43it's gonna be in the low nineties and hot and human.
- 8:46And he lasted. He did great, he's run forced player,
- 8:50He's done a great job. He's he's one of the
- 8:52biggest edgressers they've had in years. This guy could play.
- 8:56And the nud Knicks who kept comparing this to Robert Quinn,
- 8:59we gave you the answer, said, we told you he
- 9:00was heard when they traded for him. So Darius Smith
- 9:02wasn't heard. He just hadn't been on the teams for
- 9:04nine months. He looked great now. I said, if he's healthy,
- 9:07he's gonna be great signing. If he's in shape, it's
- 9:10already paying dividends. That he had a great game, really
- 9:13did considering. And look, by the way, he had more
- 9:16steps than josh Usha. How about that?
- 9:18Speaker 1: All right?
- 9:18Speaker 2: Uh?
- 9:18Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan? Yeah. And it's funny because we're wondering, eventually
- 9:23does he take even more snaps on right? I mean,
- 9:25as that was only his first game, does he get
- 9:27even more as this kind of materializes.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I mean it could, it definitely could, but you got
- 9:34to you gotta be careful don't wear him out and
- 9:35then you joh Hot Camel lineup more at the HD
- 9:37he did before that like that and jay 'shut. By
- 9:40the way, he really played well. I want to mention that, Mikey.
- 9:43It doesn't show up in a box score. He's actually
- 9:45his pressure rate was good by the way NFL, by
- 9:48the way NFL teams do it. I know that for
- 9:50a fact. I don't have PFF stuff in front of me,
- 9:53but I know for the way that NFL team's great.
- 9:55I know for a fact he grated out very well.
- 9:56Speaker 1: All right, look at the Rams real quick. Obviously you've
- 10:00got to a point in the NFL world where it
- 10:01seems that this Rams team has surpassed where the Chiefs are.
- 10:06Speaker 2: They're really well coached. Mike Sean McVay one of the
- 10:10top five head coaches in the National Football League now.
- 10:14DeVante Adams is one of the most physical receivers that
- 10:17you'll face. He's not as explosive as a J. Brown,
- 10:20but he could still play. He's an older guy. I
- 10:23remember in many years coming out of Fresno State. He
- 10:26is thirty two years old. He could still play. He's
- 10:28looked great with Stafford, their offensive line Steve Avila, their
- 10:32left guard didn't play last week. They don't know if
- 10:34they're going to have him. They're not really that great
- 10:37on the offensive line. They're actually better in the interior
- 10:39than they are a tackle. They're good at tight end.
- 10:42Kyn Williams has been a great story at fifth ront
- 10:44pick out of twenty two. He's been way better than
- 10:46the Scott in World thought they used Pooking, the great Pooking.
- 10:49The coup is great. You know, he's number twelve, Mike.
- 10:51If you put him in a different system, he's probably
- 10:53not even half as good. They don't put him on
- 10:55the outside. He's what we call reduced player. They move
- 10:57him inside. He's unbelievable. He saw that touchdown run last week. Defensively,
- 11:02one of the fastest defense in the National Football League. MIC.
- 11:04We're gonna talk more about this on Friday. I'm telling
- 11:06you they're really super weak at corner, really good at safety,
- 11:10undersized at linebacker, a give versus a stud their best
- 11:15pass rusher. Now. One other injury, Braydon Fisk, who didn't
- 11:18play against him in the playoff game. He's got a
- 11:20blaque injury. This is new. We're going to watch that
- 11:23on Friday, they got pun Afford, Well, he was under
- 11:26six feet at the number ninety five. You'll see Kobe
- 11:29Turner ninety one, who's phenomenal, who's in his third year.
- 11:32They're just really really fast mic but they don't match
- 11:34up against Eagles because they're too small.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Three surprises from Adam Kaplan after two weeks.
- 11:41Speaker 2: My three surprises, I would say the Colts. Now, let
- 11:45me give you context, Mike. They haven't been on the
- 11:47road yet. That was a ridiculous game. You got to
- 11:50be kidding me. Now, I'm sourur because I picked at Denver.
- 11:53You know I picked. I ticked five or six games
- 11:55versus the spread. I lost that one. I want to
- 11:57see how the cults fare on the road. So let's see.
- 12:01That's definitely surprising. I didn't see them being two and oh.
- 12:05Definitely didn't see that. Now Arizona they're two and oh.
- 12:07Didn't see that either. I know there are a lot
- 12:09of people picked them to make the playoffs. I'm not
- 12:11there yet. I know the NFC West is not very good.
- 12:14I'm definitely surprised by that, but again, they've had an
- 12:16easy schedule. The other one, to me is from a
- 12:21negative standpoint, Mike, I am still disappointing Houston. Now I'm
- 12:25gonna get before I get out of here. This is
- 12:27where Nickosario, their GM is not very good. He is
- 12:30your idea how to build an offensive line. They're left tackle,
- 12:33they trade Namie Tunsil, got a lot of draft picks.
- 12:35They are a place of where the journeyman and Cam
- 12:37Robinson major mistake. They're bad at center. This is not
- 12:41a well put together offensive line. You can't win. We
- 12:43all know that in Philly, in this market, Mike, you
- 12:46don't win with subpar offensive line play. And he's not
- 12:50done a good job with that. That if they don't
- 12:51make the playoffs and then win that bad division, that
- 12:54is why the Texans don't have it a good offensive line.
- 12:56And I get him credit for coming back, and they
- 12:58really should have won. They choked that game, but their
- 13:00offensive line for a number of years, it is nothing
- 13:01very good.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Adam kap On, everybody check out inside the tape on
- 13:05inside the Birds. You guys will be doing that, and
- 13:07of course with great Cosell and the whole inside the
- 13:09Bird's crew and of course football at four right here
- 13:13on the sports Betch. He's back on Friday, Mosher's here tomorrow,
- 13:17Andrew on Thursday, as we get you ready for the
- 13:19Eagles and the Rams. All right, Adam, thanks buddy
- 13:22Speaker 2: All right, thank you,
