- 0:02Good evening, everybody. Welcome to targeting Winners.
- 0:06Offseason has begun. We are this is the Coaching
- 0:09carousel episode. And today we are joined once
- 0:13again by the great Mark from out here at coach's hot seat in
- 0:17sunny California. How you doing today Mark?
- 0:20Great. Thanks for having me.
- 0:23Nice Darren, still cold up there.
- 0:27Yesterday we broke a 20 day streak of not having our high
- 0:31temperature reach freezing. We hit like 35 yesterday so the
- 0:35streak is over. Yeah, it's supposed to be like
- 0:3940 next week, so shorts and T-shirt weather upcoming.
- 0:42So there we go. And Pete?
- 0:45Sunny Mexico. Today 86° in sunny Mexico so all
- 0:51is good down here. Excited to be here with all ya.
- 0:53I believe winter is over down here in Florida as well.
- 0:57I think it was like it's in the 70s today.
- 1:00So enough making fun of Darren because I know it's going to be
- 1:03making fun of me and Florida State, the coaches, coaches
- 1:07hiring. I don't know, Mark, before we
- 1:10get going, how would you describe the offseason, the
- 1:13coaching carousel from 2025 compared to other years in
- 1:17recent history here? It's been chaotic a really, you
- 1:24know, very active and a lot, you know, a lot of surprises, I
- 1:29think. Yeah.
- 1:34Like 3333 changes in all couple years ago there were 32.
- 1:38We haven't come anywhere close to those two numbers in a long,
- 1:41long time. And you know the reasons like,
- 1:44you know, coach leaving for a conference rival towards the end
- 1:47of the regular season besides poor performance.
- 1:51And what, 1 Coach gets fired for not only keeping alcohol in his
- 1:54desk but actually drinking it on the job supposedly.
- 1:58And everybody's favorite a, a coach heading over to a
- 2:01staffer's apartment and threatening them with
- 2:03silverware. So, I mean, the reasons are
- 2:06vast. But yeah, 33 is, is just insane.
- 2:13Tim, are are you emotionally set to get into Mark's rankings?
- 2:19Well, we're going to be, I'm sure, top of the list and
- 2:21something this year. Yeah, I'm ready for it.
- 2:24I did not drink today. Say one thing before Mark gets
- 2:26going and depresses Tim. There are multiple links in the
- 2:30description of the live stream tonight. 1 is to coaches
- 2:33hotsy.com, Mark's website. Sign up, it's free.
- 2:37He's he's doing a series right now, I believe of his thoughts
- 2:40on all the new coaching hires. So sign up for that.
- 2:43Not only can you get caught up by going back to his blog, but
- 2:45you'll get his weekly emails on that Also.
- 2:48He's got a podcast out, I think, what, two or three, three
- 2:51episodes so far out there. So far, yeah.
- 2:55And we've got 2 links there, one if you listen on Spotify, one if
- 2:58you listen on Apple, Last week's pretty interesting.
- 3:01How important is December in determining these coaches
- 3:05future? So an interesting listen there.
- 3:07So all right, Mark, we've had John multiple times.
- 3:10We always appreciate you making time for us.
- 3:12And now as an added bonus for Pete and myself, you get to
- 3:17start Tim off in February. The potential mental breakdown.
- 3:24So please mark your rankings. End of the seat.
- 3:28Who's got the hottest seat in America and why?
- 3:32Well, you know, Tim, I'm sorry, but it's Mike Norvell at Florida
- 3:36State. Yeah, just.
- 3:40And it does just does not look to be getting any better.
- 3:44You know, you kind of hope in the in the offseason,
- 3:46particularly in this era, that it would get better.
- 3:49And the way it started out was with Gus Malzahn, the offensive
- 3:52coordinator, retiring very suddenly.
- 3:56And so it appears that Mike Norvell will will be back
- 3:59calling plays next year. He had one, one year off.
- 4:06This is just not a good situation.
- 4:08The, you know, the the, the boosters are upset and probably
- 4:14rightfully so. They were, you know, they were,
- 4:19they, they gave input into the stadium reconfiguration and
- 4:23upgrade and that was ignored. They gave input on the coach and
- 4:28that was ignored. And so they've stopped writing
- 4:31checks. And so now if you're trying to
- 4:33buy out and Norvelt's got a pretty sizeable buyout, you
- 4:37really can't do it. So you're sort of stuck with
- 4:39them for a while and stuck with the athletic director for a
- 4:43while. So the guy who created the mess
- 4:46will be there and the guy who is executing the mess will be there
- 4:50for the foreseeable future. It just isn't clicking at, you
- 4:55know, I did. He went heavily into the portal
- 5:00one year and was very successful with it.
- 5:03You know, that was the year that they were bumped out of the
- 5:05playoffs and since then it's just all falling apart.
- 5:10It is considered, it's Norell's continued to rely on the portal
- 5:14pretty heavily. What you lose when you're doing
- 5:17that is you lose the culture. You know, these guys are coming
- 5:20in and they're not Seminoles. They don't they don't, they
- 5:24don't know about this and they don't know about the spear.
- 5:26And there's a horse galloping around the stadium.
- 5:28Why? And why are people making that
- 5:31noise? They're they're they're really
- 5:33just not into it. They're hired hands and they
- 5:36don't really care. And that doesn't seem to be
- 5:40something that the coaching staff is focused on.
- 5:43They are focused on. They did recognize that there
- 5:45were cultural issues and they were focused on, you know, we're
- 5:48A-Team and we got to play together.
- 5:50But they missed the part about the school.
- 5:52And with a really rich culture that Florida State has, that's a
- 5:56big mess. Yeah, I thought I saw, I, I,
- 6:00I've turned a lot of the, the YouTube channels and the, the
- 6:04Twitter accounts off, right, Because it's just been so
- 6:06negative. I didn't want to deal with it,
- 6:08but I thought they did hire a general manager.
- 6:12They did I. Mean you think that'll help?
- 6:14I mean, I mean, to take as much out of it, of it out of the
- 6:18hands of the athletic director, I think is a good idea.
- 6:21Yeah, I, I think most of the general managers are, are
- 6:24working on talent evaluation and you're working with the players
- 6:28to make sure that they stick around after they're, you know,
- 6:30after the, after the one year that they've got an nil.
- 6:33So we'll see what that does that that that could help.
- 6:37But I, you know, I just, it just seems to be, they just don't
- 6:42seem to be connecting on a, you know, on a really disturbing
- 6:45level. Like it just isn't, it just
- 6:47isn't, it just isn't happening. And Norvell seems to be lost as
- 6:52to what to do. He doesn't seem to know.
- 6:55So I think this is probably too big of a job for him.
- 6:59He probably needs to go back to the, you know, the type of
- 7:03school that he came from and, and he was successful at
- 7:07Memphis, He was successful at other places, but this, this is
- 7:11too big of a stage, I think. Well, at least they'll have the
- 7:15same offensive coordinator as last year, so that.
- 7:17Oh, wait, no. Oh, he retired.
- 7:19Yeah. Great.
- 7:20Lovely. At the last minute.
- 7:24Yeah, what's he probably just saw the running on the wall
- 7:27maybe. I don't think he liked the
- 7:28quarterback. I don't I don't like the
- 7:29quarterback they got either. I mean, I would just like to
- 7:32they have some kid on the bench. I have to forget his name, but
- 7:35obviously, but all the the players or the the fans or
- 7:40whatever seem to like this kid Searcy I think his name is, or
- 7:45Seeley #11 I believe is his number one.
- 7:48So Darren, you can look that up for me.
- 7:49I'm. Not looking that up for.
- 7:51You I'm not looking that up either.
- 7:52I'm I've totally detached from FSU for the last couple of
- 7:55months, but I like to see them recruit a guy and give them the
- 8:02give them the reins, recruit them, coach them because I mean
- 8:05he he can coach. I mean, he's not like he's
- 8:07totally brain dead out there. I mean, yeah.
- 8:12No, he's good. He's good with X's and O's, you
- 8:15know, and, and it's a lot to ask somebody to call the plays in,
- 8:19to be the head coach. And a lot of the newer guys like
- 8:21to do that. And it just doesn't work 'cause,
- 8:24you know, you need somebody to sort of be, you know, managing
- 8:26the whole game. And when they're calling the
- 8:28plays, they, they tend to focus on one side of the ball.
- 8:32They don't focus on both and, and you see it over and over and
- 8:36over again there. There's the very rare exception
- 8:39to that. So, you know, I, I, I don't
- 8:44know, I think Gus Malzahn was burned out anyway.
- 8:47And when he saw what he had, I don't think he saw he didn't
- 8:50have exactly what he wanted. And he just thought, I, you
- 8:52know, I don't want to keep pushing a boulder, a pill.
- 8:54I'm 60 something years old and I I can go play with my
- 8:58grandchildren, right? They might block better than
- 9:03Florida State, who knows? So, Well, before it gets too
- 9:08depressing, let's just move on to some, you know, something
- 9:13else before I start to cry here, Darren, you got something you
- 9:15want to ask Mark? Well, I I was going to let Pete
- 9:18bring up a coach #2 on Mark's rankings.
- 9:20But before we go into that, little breaking news just came
- 9:23by on the phone. Trinidad Chambliss will be
- 9:26allowed to play in 2026. So just your love or hate for
- 9:31Ole Miss accordingly, that just came down a couple minutes ago.
- 9:33So he won his day in court. He will be the Ole Miss starting
- 9:36quarterback in 2026. He.
- 9:41Well, I think Mark, I think your next team that you're looking at
- 9:43is Baylor. If I'm incorrect toy is that is
- 9:45that accurate? That's correct.
- 9:48Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:52Let's look into that. Item number 2 is Dave Aranda at
- 9:55Baylor. Dave, really, he got sort of a
- 9:58reprieve when his boss got fired.
- 10:02And so, yeah, because I think he would have been gone last year.
- 10:07And you know, this this is another situation that just
- 10:10doesn't look to be getting any better, unfortunately.
- 10:14I, I think Dave Aranda is a, a really good defensive
- 10:18coordinator, but that the head coaching position is just not
- 10:22translating. So he got a reprieve for one
- 10:25more year. I think they're already having
- 10:28back channel conversations with, with some, with other coaches to
- 10:33see who might be able to, to step into Baylor.
- 10:39And you know, there are some, there is one big name that is
- 10:43looking at that job right now. So we'll, we'll see what happens
- 10:49during the year and, and I, I would expect that that one will
- 10:52open up. Yeah, I agree.
- 10:57I actually have him as my number one.
- 10:58I mean, I think, you know, for him, I think where he is, I
- 11:01think it's challenging that that team seems to be regressing.
- 11:04It's just not, it's not doing what I think that team is
- 11:08capable of, of, of, of doing and it it just does not seem to be
- 11:11pressing the right, the right direction.
- 11:13So I I agree with that. I think he would have been gone
- 11:16before this year and I, I do not think we'll survive the season
- 11:19this year, but we'll, we'll see. We'll see how that goes.
- 11:21But if it does not start well, I don't think it's going to make
- 11:24it halfway through the season. Yeah, I.
- 11:27Absolutely agree. I was looking at list 3 through
- 11:305. Pete just talking about guys who
- 11:32don't think are five of the year.
- 11:33I'm surprised all three of these guys survived 2025 but.
- 11:36Let's start with number. Three Mike Locksley of the
- 11:40Maryland Terrapins. How did this guy not lose his
- 11:43job last season? I, you know, it comes down to
- 11:47money and I don't think they had the money to buy him out.
- 11:51And so they decided that, you know, the the devil you know is
- 11:56better than the one that you don't know.
- 11:58And so they're investing the money that they do have into the
- 12:01program. And we'll see.
- 12:03There's a couple of these that are doing that, a couple, a
- 12:05couple of the, the, the coaches that are in trouble.
- 12:10Our, our, you know, the programs have said we're going to invest
- 12:13in the, we're going to invest in the players, we'll invest in the
- 12:15NIL and we'll, we'll see what happens.
- 12:17So that this is the first one of those where we're, we're seeing
- 12:21that and we'll have to wait for the season to start.
- 12:26I I don't I don't see anything great happening here either.
- 12:31No, with, with, with Mike. And then so Mike's number 2 on
- 12:33my list, the big tennis where I focus a lot of my efforts
- 12:35through the year, it feels like they've completely plateaued it.
- 12:40It seems like wash, rinse, repeat.
- 12:42It's the same thing over and over again.
- 12:45Seven and five, it doesn't matter.
- 12:47They have skilled players and it does not seem to matter.
- 12:51It's the same result over and over again.
- 12:54He can't get them over the hill. Nothing changes.
- 12:58Signature wins do not exist and it just doesn't feel like it's
- 13:02going to change. So I don't know where that
- 13:04program goes with him and I, I think they're frustrated with
- 13:08him, but I agree. I, I think it's a money thing
- 13:11right now and I think they need to figure out what they're going
- 13:14to do with, with Mike, but I don't think that program can
- 13:17move forward with, with him. So something's got to happen.
- 13:23Do you want to stay on the Big 10 or do you want to move to a
- 13:25different different conference boys, how do you want to go
- 13:27let's. Let's look at #4 because after
- 13:31this, not going to have meltdown against Texas A and MI saw this
- 13:34guy was going to be gone Sunday morning.
- 13:36But I have a feeling there's 25,000,000 reasons why he's
- 13:40still getting another shot this year.
- 13:42Shane Beamer, South Carolina. How much trouble was he in after
- 13:46that A&M meltdown about 30 to 3:00 at halftime and then losing
- 13:5131 to 30 or something like that? I mean he.
- 13:56Was he was? He was.
- 13:59So I'm interviewed, you know, going into the locker room and,
- 14:03you know, the, he was, he was roostering there a little bit
- 14:06about how well they were doing. And then the next thing you do,
- 14:09it just collapsed. So, you know, I, I know South
- 14:13Carolina fans are, are frustrated with Shane.
- 14:17You know, I think one of his big mistakes was the hiring of Mr.
- 14:25Shula. And he, he, you know, he let him
- 14:28go. And I, I think that that, you
- 14:31know, he may have justified staying another year because he
- 14:35recognized he had made a mistake and he let him go.
- 14:37But you know, he goes through assistance and coordinators
- 14:43pretty quickly. So I don't know that it's that
- 14:45great of a place to work under him.
- 14:49You know, it just seems like the IT just seems like there's
- 14:53always a change it defensive coordinator and, you know,
- 14:57defensive line coach and you know, all, you know, big
- 15:00turnovers of assistance every single year.
- 15:03So we'll have to, you know, we'll have to see with somebody
- 15:07who'd not, you know, not never been a head coach before, not
- 15:10really been a coordinator before.
- 15:11So it was a big leap for him to take on this job and it looked
- 15:17good one year so far. Yeah, The problem for Shane,
- 15:23right? I mean, sure, the SEC is tough,
- 15:25but we have seen South Carolina be competitive in the SEC and,
- 15:29and they can be. So the fact that they're not
- 15:33right is, is just damning on him.
- 15:36And the fact that he's turning through coordinators, there's no
- 15:40consistency. I mean, that that clearly points
- 15:43to him. And you've seen teams like Texas
- 15:44and Oklahoma, you know, kind of fully embed themselves in the
- 15:47league. And South Carolina seems to be
- 15:49drifting away, right? And that's that's an issue.
- 15:53That's certainly an issue for, you know, obviously the program
- 15:56as a whole. So I mean, clearly something
- 15:58needs to be done. He's a guy.
- 15:59I cannot, I cannot imagine him surviving this year.
- 16:03I don't know what he could. Do to that, no, I I don't, I
- 16:08don't. That was my yeah.
- 16:10Just as an aside, that was my first SEC game was a South
- 16:15Carolina home game. And so I, you know, a little
- 16:19affinity for them because of that.
- 16:21And you know, it's sad to see. It is, it is.
- 16:25I mean, Speaking of sad to see. So we'll shift back to the Big
- 16:2810 because this is this is somebody I've been beating up
- 16:31now for a couple. Years ever since you've been on
- 16:34the show. In a team that I just, I mean,
- 16:37Wisconsin, right? This is a team that has a very
- 16:41strong historical record of how they play and, and, and just
- 16:46their whole culture and, and, and Luke came in and just
- 16:51basically set it on fire and threw it in a dumpster.
- 16:55And I don't know what he's doing there, but that is not Wisconsin
- 16:59football and it is not working. And I have absolutely no idea
- 17:03how he's still there other than money.
- 17:05And I mean, that's got to change because that is that that they
- 17:09are he has done a horrible job just decimating a program that
- 17:15has been historically strong program in the big town.
- 17:20You know, it's, it's funny when you look at the assistants and
- 17:24you look at the because I think the assistants have a, a, a, a
- 17:28lot of say over whether the coach does well or not the
- 17:31program does well or not well. His assistants from Cincinnati
- 17:35are mostly at Notre Dame. They're not at Wisconsin.
- 17:39They didn't come with him. They went to they went with
- 17:41Marcus with in his his DC at Cincinnati.
- 17:46And so he started over. He started with Alex Grinch and
- 17:50I, you know, on his staff and I that was a bad sign right there.
- 17:55And it just like you said, it's just never the culture is not
- 17:59the Wisconsin culture. It's not the Wisconsin program.
- 18:03This is a program that has said we're going to invest in the
- 18:05program. So we'll see what that produces,
- 18:08but I, I think that seat could be really hot if they've
- 18:11invested in the program and nothing changes.
- 18:14And I don't think anything's going to change.
- 18:16But yeah, I don't, yeah. Unless, unless they they it
- 18:22would have to be a complete 180 for Luke.
- 18:26Yeah, you think they could trade maybe Florida State or Belt for
- 18:30Fickle and do a. There you go.
- 18:32Change a scenery trade. Maybe that's all they need, a
- 18:34change of scenery. It could not hurt, honestly.
- 18:42I just don't get like Mark had mentioned a couple times, you
- 18:44hear all these programs that say, oh, we're keeping our
- 18:46coach, we're going to invest more money in the program.
- 18:48So my first question is why didn't you just invest more
- 18:50money in the program, you know, along with hiring this coach and
- 18:55then you would save yourself the embarrassment from from hiring
- 18:58this guy. But you know, one of the things
- 19:00we talked about, Tim, I'm, I'm going to ask one question and I
- 19:03think you're, you're emotionally recovered from the start of the
- 19:05show and then I'll let you go. But I got, I got some questions
- 19:07from the mailbox. So one of the things I think as
- 19:11fans we all hear about is these insane buyout amounts.
- 19:13James Franklin, 49 million Jimbo Fisher, 75,000,000 How do these
- 19:19numbers even come to be? I mean, I can get let the
- 19:22coaches and their agents love these numbers, but what, what's
- 19:25the what's the reasoning behind this?
- 19:28Because it just seems ridiculous like you could be doing so many
- 19:31other things with that money. How do these numbers even come
- 19:33about? Well, you really have you have
- 19:36one agent who's controlling a lot of the a lot of these
- 19:39coaches and he has he has leverage and he uses that
- 19:43leverage to his advantage to negotiate some some of these
- 19:48ridiculous contracts. Yeah.
- 19:50And some of them, you know, the athletic directors are just, you
- 19:54know, rolling over. There's a couple places where
- 19:57the a DS are rolling over. This really started, you know,
- 20:00it goes back to the tarmac thing.
- 20:02This at this level. Mike Bone a couple years ago was
- 20:08charged with hiring a football coach at USC.
- 20:11And the what he heard over and over again was you fired a guy
- 20:15on the tarmac. Why would I want to go there?
- 20:18And so that was used as leverage to start the insane buyouts.
- 20:23And since that contract with that buyout, they've gone
- 20:27nowhere but up. So we know who to blame.
- 20:32So. Yes.
- 20:37I mean, yeah, it is hard to feel even if these coaches do get
- 20:41fired, it is hard to feel bad for them because they still keep
- 20:43getting paid. I mean, if I ever get fired, I'm
- 20:46I'm not getting any more checks. If we can go back to the Big 10
- 20:50for a second. I had a buddy at work.
- 20:52I guess we'll call this a phone, a friend question.
- 20:56He's a fan of Iowa and I guess he's tired of Kurt Ferentz.
- 21:00He would like to know how much longer do you see him staying
- 21:03there and is he going to leave anytime soon?
- 21:06I guess he wants them gone for some reason so.
- 21:10Yeah, that's an interesting 1. So I, you know, I've heard like
- 21:14for the last few years that this was going to be his last year.
- 21:16And now it's sort of laughable. You hear, you know, it's going
- 21:19to be his last year and I, you know, I don't believe it.
- 21:22Now. I think at some point somebody's
- 21:25going to have to pull him aside and say, look, we're, we, we
- 21:29haven't, you know, a nice cushy office for you and the
- 21:31chancellor's office and you can go raise money and this guy's
- 21:36taking over and it'll probably be an ugly and, but he's made it
- 21:42that way. You know, it's, you know,
- 21:46there's a time to step aside. It's probably his, his time.
- 21:49And they can let him go out on, you know, with a, a great send
- 21:52off and, and, you know, put a statue of him up and like quad
- 21:57and have a nice dinner for him and give him a gold watch and
- 22:01pat him on the back. But I, I don't think he's going
- 22:03to go that way. I think they're going to have to
- 22:05push him out. Oh, yeah, that's what John
- 22:09Gruden says. There's two types of football
- 22:11coaches, those who who have been fired and those who haven't been
- 22:14fired yet. So Bobby Bowden was fired.
- 22:18I mean, he even said that to the end.
- 22:21They said they they would ask him after he retired.
- 22:23He'd be like, no, I did not retire, I was fired.
- 22:26So, you know, he said that. So if he can get fired, anybody
- 22:28can get fired. So yeah, all these guys are
- 22:31getting fired eventually, except for Nick Saban.
- 22:33He'll just leave. But I guess he'd be the
- 22:36exception. He he left at the right time.
- 22:39It was. That was it.
- 22:41He did. Well, it's got to do with the
- 22:42nil stuff. He was like, I'm out, yeah.
- 22:45This is not. He can't just, you know, do the
- 22:47whole go to school, get grades and be ready for the NFL stuff
- 22:51anymore. And now they want all the money.
- 22:52So that's level the playing field, if you will.
- 22:56So Darren, you got another one coming up?
- 22:59I asked one. Pete's got a couple that that
- 23:01he's got lined up. I do, yeah.
- 23:03Let me circle back to the Big 10 for a minute.
- 23:04So I'm a Wolverine. So I mean, the Willingham hire
- 23:08is really interesting to me. I, I personally, I think it's a
- 23:10really good one. I think he's a culture guy.
- 23:12I think he's a repair the damage guy.
- 23:15So I think for me, I, I don't think there's a lot of debate
- 23:18over that one. I don't think he's a shoot for
- 23:20the moon guy, right? He's a fix it.
- 23:23But the one more interesting to me than the Michigan thinks, I
- 23:26think that's pretty clear what he's there to do is the Pat
- 23:29Fitzgerald hire at Michigan. To me, that is way more
- 23:33interesting of where that thing goes.
- 23:36And is he somebody who can function in this whole new NIL
- 23:41world or can he not? You know, that intrigues me
- 23:45'cause you know, I'm, I think Kyle can do just fine at
- 23:48Michigan, but I'm not sure what Pat can do at Michigan State.
- 23:53I'm really just curious about curious about your perspective
- 23:55actually on both guys, but even more so, Pat.
- 23:58So he had let me lay right down, 'cause I I actually wrote
- 24:02something down about this. He had a defensive coordinator
- 24:05when he was at Northwestern, a guy, the guy had been there
- 24:08forever. And it's really, you know, he's,
- 24:11he's a savant with the with defense.
- 24:14And the moment that guy left Northwestern started to decline.
- 24:24And so I, you know, that's what Pat Fitzgerald's reputation and
- 24:29his and his everything he was built on was the Northwestern
- 24:32defense. Well, he had a really good
- 24:34defensive coordinator. He'd been there for, you know,
- 24:3650 years or something. And, you know, it built up the
- 24:39program, built up the Northwestern way.
- 24:41And, you know, then he had Pat there who really got to back
- 24:45that up and probably did a couple things to make it, you
- 24:48know, help him be successful, even more successful at it.
- 24:52I don't see that guy at Michigan State.
- 24:54And so my question is, who's going to, who's going to run the
- 24:59defense? Is the guy going to be as as
- 25:02good as as the, the guy that he had at, at at at Northwestern?
- 25:08Because that's that's when it fell apart.
- 25:11So you're going up to Michigan State.
- 25:13They had Mel Tucker. That was a disaster that fell
- 25:17apart. They brought in Jonathan Smith.
- 25:20And listen, if you're willing to wait, probably it would have
- 25:23taken four to five years, but Jonathan Smith would get you
- 25:26there. They preached that for two
- 25:28years. They did not have the patience.
- 25:30I preached that for two years. Give the man time.
- 25:34They would not do so. So yeah.
- 25:36No, they threw him out, and now you've got Pat Fitzgerald, so
- 25:41you're going to have two big buyouts and you and you and
- 25:48you've killed the you've really killed everything 'cause, you
- 25:51know, if I'm a kid and I'm in high school, do I go?
- 25:54Let me see. Mel Tucker.
- 25:55Jonathan Smith. I don't think so.
- 25:59Yeah, I don't think. I think, I think they fired a
- 26:02better coach to go to a lesser coach is my, is my opinion on
- 26:06that. And as a high school recruit, I
- 26:08would look at it that way. Like that place is just a
- 26:11cluster and do I really want to go there 'cause this guy will
- 26:14probably be out in two years too?
- 26:16Yeah, yeah, I completely agree. And also, if you're a parent of
- 26:21a kid who's considering a school in that area, I mean, yeah, he
- 26:24was found to have no knowledge of everything that was going on
- 26:27at Northwestern that led to his dismissal.
- 26:29And I mean, his job is to be in charge and know everything
- 26:33that's going on. Are you comfortable sending your
- 26:36child to go and pay for a guy who was apparently unaware of a
- 26:40lot of illegal things going on in his program?
- 26:43So yeah, this has got train wreck written all over it.
- 26:48I agree with you and Pete completely.
- 26:50This is not going to end well. Yeah.
- 26:52And I'm not sure that program is recoverable anytime soon.
- 26:56I think there's been so much damage done there that they need
- 27:00to have complete gutting and their needs time, time needs to
- 27:03go. Before that programs were
- 27:05recoverable. They have money, but there's
- 27:09been a lot of damage done there. You know, the athletic director
- 27:12who hired Jonathan Smith was not the guy who fired him.
- 27:14And so when that athletic director change came in, you
- 27:17know, a DS seem to like to hire their own guy.
- 27:20The writing was kind of on the wall.
- 27:22But what they really needed to lay out was like, this is the
- 27:25stuff that went on with Mel Tucker, and this is what we're
- 27:27going to do to fix it. And this is the timeline.
- 27:29And nobody ever did that. Instead, they started talking
- 27:32about how Jonathan Smith didn't fit and he needs to go.
- 27:36And you know, I mean, it was, it was like it was the writing was
- 27:39on the wall from the middle of the first year.
- 27:41Like right out of the gate, immediately they were on that.
- 27:44Like how is this going to work right?
- 27:48We did have a question from a YouTube post.
- 27:52You want me to go knock that one out there, Darren, Should I go
- 27:54ahead? Yeah, the hardline question.
- 27:56Yeah, we had one from leave. His name is Crack Monster.
- 28:00You want us to know what's your opinion of Brian Hartline at USF
- 28:04and where would you rank his hiring in the Group of Five?
- 28:10So I think that's a pretty good hire for them.
- 28:13You know, he's, he's coming in behind somebody who's obviously
- 28:16very successful. And I would, I would give that a
- 28:21good. You know, it's always hard to
- 28:24say when somebody's a coordinator and they're going to
- 28:26become a head coach because you really don't have any, you don't
- 28:29have any, you know, kind of track record there.
- 28:32You can kind of look what they did as the coordinator and you,
- 28:35you kind of extrapolate from there.
- 28:37But it's different when they're sitting on, they're sitting in
- 28:40charge of the entire program. So I, you know, I would give
- 28:46him, I wouldn't start after him next year, you know, and I
- 28:51wouldn't even start on him the year after.
- 28:54If, if, if things aren't shooting right out of the gate,
- 28:57I'd give him to at least year 3 before you assess whether that
- 29:01was a good hire or not. He's got to figure out what it
- 29:04means to be a head coach. Yeah, he pulled a lot of those.
- 29:11Did he pull a lot of those Ohio State receivers from that area
- 29:14of the country, South Florida, So.
- 29:15I think he did, yeah. At.
- 29:17The same point. He should do OK.
- 29:18Well, even no matter where they're from, he had Indigba
- 29:21Harrison, he had three or four like awesome ones and obviously
- 29:27the receivers that he had this year.
- 29:29So it's interesting that well not interesting at all.
- 29:32Not surprising that someone from Tampa would go by the name crack
- 29:35monster. Just want to point that out.
- 29:36That's all the Florida Man stories, like 80% of them come
- 29:42from Tampa, OK? Not they're, they're the meth up
- 29:46here in Jacksonville. We're like the Waffle House.
- 29:49I I understand but. Truck what in with the truck
- 29:52nuts? That's more more.
- 29:53Hillbillies up in Jacksonville. You know, alligators, Waffle
- 29:57House violence, everything else is mostly Tampa so and all the
- 30:01pythons are down in Miami. That's that's where it all most
- 30:04of the Florida Man stuff goes. So I got 1.
- 30:09I got one for you, Mark, actually.
- 30:11So one of my favorite whipping guys for for years has been
- 30:14James Franklin, right? James Franklin was is an
- 30:17excellent recruiter, excellent recruiter, right?
- 30:20People seem to love the play for the guy, but his tactical stuff
- 30:24on the sideline, he seems to shoot himself in the foot
- 30:28randomly at the worst time possible.
- 30:30That said, Virginia Tech hiring him is an absolute Grand Slam
- 30:36for them. I can say nothing bad about that
- 30:39hire other than to me that is an ACC changing hire.
- 30:44I'm curious about your perspective on that.
- 30:47I thought it was the best hire of the cycle, I really did.
- 30:50I thought you could not have found a better fit.
- 30:54He, if you look at the, at Frank Beamer's record, I pulled up
- 30:58Frank Beamer's record and I pulled up James Franklin's
- 31:02record, they're almost identical.
- 31:04I think Franklin has actually won a little bit more higher, a
- 31:07little bit of a higher winning percentage.
- 31:10But you know, you look at every, you look at the, the offense,
- 31:12you look at the defense, you look at it, you know, you start
- 31:14to look at the whole thing, the way that he runs, runs the
- 31:16program, he's Frank Beamer. So if you're a Virginia Tech,
- 31:21you got your guy. You, you got the perfect guy.
- 31:26Could not agree more. Yeah, I think we talked about
- 31:28that before on the show and I think we were all in agreement.
- 31:31And even then all the coaching positions hadn't been filled.
- 31:34But I thought there's no hire that's going to be better than
- 31:36this. I mean, he knows that area.
- 31:38He like he said he recruits great that he's super familiar
- 31:41with that area of the country. And and the one knock about him,
- 31:45well, he can't be the top ten team.
- 31:46I don't know if anybody's looked at the ACC outside of Miami.
- 31:49We don't do that here. No, you guys do not do top ten
- 31:53in the ACC, so I see no reason for.
- 31:58I mean, I haven't looked at their schedule.
- 31:59I don't even know if Miami's on it.
- 32:03I don't think I'll look it up when I.
- 32:04Looked the record against the top 10.
- 32:08Beamer and Franklin were almost identical.
- 32:11It was, it was really, I mean, it was everything.
- 32:14And I thought, wow, if you know, they love Frank Beamer for good
- 32:18reason, you know, he did a lot with them and he ran a really
- 32:21great program and was really classy.
- 32:24And that's James Franklin's. You know, really if you're an
- 32:27opponent of James Franklin, you're you're playing against
- 32:30him. He's classy.
- 32:31He's, you know, he's a classy guy.
- 32:33So he's, that was a really good hire And, and I'll go, you know,
- 32:38I'll just do an aside on the Penn State side I've been
- 32:43talking about. Shooting after and.
- 32:49And they hired James Franklin. If you look at, if you peel back
- 32:54the onion and you start looking at Matt Campbell, he is James
- 32:57Franklin. So they didn't get any better.
- 33:01They hired the same guy. Yeah.
- 33:04Yeah, if he can recruit as well as James Franklin, which I'm not
- 33:07sure he can. So maybe the same guy, maybe
- 33:10slightly less. I I don't know, I'm not sure
- 33:13they got better. I just don't know what Penn
- 33:15State was thinking. I mean, you're firing Franklin
- 33:17mid season. The thought was like you've got
- 33:19somebody lined up that you want. Not only did you not have
- 33:23somebody lined up, you ran through like 8 guys before you
- 33:27finally got Matt Campbell for like 54 days from his firing to
- 33:31Matt Campbell's hiring. Just like what are, you know,
- 33:34you expect more out of Penn State.
- 33:36I'm sorry, I just have no idea what they were even thinking
- 33:40making that move but. Speaking of our, our.
- 33:44Schedule's easy this year. They'll probably win 10 games
- 33:46just to, you know, make us all. We knew what we were doing.
- 33:49We're going to win 10 games. Matt Hamill.
- 33:52I'm sorry, Pete, go ahead. No, I was going to say, Speaking
- 33:55of teams that don't know what they're doing, what the heck is
- 33:57Stanford doing? Have they given up on football
- 34:01all together? What?
- 34:02What is this coaching hire? I don't understand at all what
- 34:06that team is doing. So if you take a look at Coach
- 34:10Esati tomorrow, we actually dig into that one.
- 34:13You know, Stanford's a, it's a weird animal because it, you
- 34:17know, they, they do things out of the norm and you know, this
- 34:23is definitely a higher out of the norm.
- 34:26It it could work. If it's going to work anywhere,
- 34:30it'll work at Stanford. That's let's put it that way.
- 34:33OK. Anybody else would be pretty up
- 34:37in arms about it, but you know, that's one that could actually
- 34:43work there. We'll we'll, we'll, we'll see.
- 34:48Across the Bay at Cal. That's an interesting hire.
- 34:53That's one to watch. So Tash Lapoy, he played at Cal,
- 34:57He's from the Bay Area, He went to De La Salle High School.
- 35:00He, he knows the lay of the land there for recruiting.
- 35:05If you watch the game, the, the game day, you know, when they,
- 35:11when they went to Cal, they were all, all of you know, all of the
- 35:15hosts were shocked at the turn out and the enthusiasm.
- 35:20Cal has really been a sleeping giant, and none of us know about
- 35:25it because the last time that they did anything with their
- 35:28team was over 60 years ago, 65 years ago.
- 35:32And so we don't know about it. But they have a really strong
- 35:36culture. They have a really, you know,
- 35:38enthusiastic fan base. They've got the alumni support
- 35:44as long as they think you they're serious.
- 35:46And this might be the first time they've got a chancellor who's
- 35:49an alum who knows that. They've got Ron Rivera as the
- 35:52general manager who knows that and Tosh Lapoy who is, you know,
- 35:57a defensive coordinator at Alabama and at Oregon taking
- 36:02over. That might be the out-of-the-box
- 36:05hire that could go somewhere this year.
- 36:08That would be 1 to watch. You got one, Darren.
- 36:13I got AI. Got a few here too.
- 36:14I don't know a few. I I the only other one that I
- 36:17had, you know, I already talked about SEC earlier.
- 36:19Am I the only one that hates the Arkansas hire of Silver field?
- 36:22I mean, does anybody like understand what they're thinking
- 36:25was because this seems like another terrible hire.
- 36:28The Arkansas people don't seem to like it much, but OK.
- 36:31That's what I thought. I'm not an Arkansas person, but
- 36:33I was just like, got rid of Sam Pittman for this guy.
- 36:36I, I I. He's a game manager kind of guy.
- 36:39I don't know what he's really going to do.
- 36:40There's I don't. Upside doesn't exist.
- 36:42I don't think so. I don't know.
- 36:45Right. No, Memphis was glad to see him
- 36:47go, so that should tell you a lot.
- 36:53Which of all the coaching hires we had this year, Which one do
- 36:56you think is the best overall cultural fit?
- 37:01You're. Clearly the one that's this
- 37:03coach will win you a championship, but the one that
- 37:05just seems to fit like the community and and what the
- 37:09program's trying to do. The Lane Kiffin hire at LSU is
- 37:13probably the one that fits the best.
- 37:18You think of somebody with, you think of somebody with swagger
- 37:23who, you know, talks a big game and you know, does all sorts of
- 37:28stuff that you you go, wow, that's Lane.
- 37:32And he's in a place where he can do it now where they would
- 37:35embrace it. So that's probably the best
- 37:39cultural fit. Already fired up.
- 37:44They were fired up the minute that happened.
- 37:46They were already talking smack. So you're right.
- 37:49I mean they are ready for Lane, so they he does fit beautifully
- 37:53there. Yeah.
- 37:55I. Believe late September, LSU at
- 37:58Ole Miss must see the origin. I don't care what's going on
- 38:04that day. Nobody better scheduled a
- 38:06wedding that Yeah. Not going to be there.
- 38:11Be fun. Oh, my God.
- 38:15Yeah. I mean, and I got two more here.
- 38:20I don't know if Pete, if you wanted to go or Darren, do you
- 38:22want to go? I mean, I have something to go.
- 38:24Go ahead, Tim. OK, which one?
- 38:28Which one is the most overhyped that you think it's just going
- 38:31to fall flat? Well, I think Arkansas is a
- 38:35good, a good, a good bet for that.
- 38:40I, you know, I think, you know, we covered, we covered wedding
- 38:44ham at Michigan. And I, I think, you know, what
- 38:47we were saying about it was, you know, great cultural fit.
- 38:51He's going to put discipline in there.
- 38:52He's going to reset the culture. He's not going to take any crap
- 38:57from anyone. He's, you know, he's just a real
- 38:59no nonsense guy. I've always really liked him.
- 39:02When you dig down into the into the numbers, you look at his
- 39:06record, you know, he's not a guy who wins against the big teams.
- 39:10He'll, he's going to, he's going to beat, you know, the, the, the
- 39:16middle of the pack. He's going to have a good
- 39:18record. They're going to have a winning
- 39:19record. They're going to go to a nice
- 39:20bowl game. They're going to look tough, but
- 39:24he's going to lose against the top team and that's just been,
- 39:28that's been, but he'll reset the culture there and whoever comes
- 39:32after him is going to benefit from that.
- 39:36If if the betting line if the over under was three years in
- 39:40one game for how long Whittingham will be at Michigan
- 39:44you betting the over the under under?
- 39:46Under. I'm betting the under, yeah.
- 39:51He's keeping, he's keeping the seat warm for John Harbaugh.
- 39:53That's all that's happening right now.
- 39:55Oh yeah, they'll wait for the Giants to get rid of him and
- 39:57then he's. Oh, that's what's going to
- 40:00happen. So you're banking on the Giants
- 40:02impatience. I am.
- 40:06Good luck with that. Let me know how that works out.
- 40:08Well, you won't have to. I'm sure we'll all hear about
- 40:10it. So all right, go with my last
- 40:16one or. Yeah, I, I, I got all the ones
- 40:19from the e-mail. I I got a couple of Pete's, but
- 40:21we'll let him ask those. Well, the one higher that I hate
- 40:25the most because I think it's probably the best one and it's
- 40:29by the Florida Gators. John Sumrall.
- 40:30He would he was like my one, one of my choices to take over for
- 40:35Norbel If FSU shake can Norbel, I wanted Sumrall.
- 40:41Are my fears correct or do you see hopefully I'm way off base
- 40:45here or do you think I'm I nailed something?
- 40:47No, I, I think he nailed it. I think he's, and nobody's
- 40:53paying attention to them right now and they're doing all kinds
- 40:55of the right stuff. So I that's, that's why.
- 41:00So there's a couple of them that I'm looking at.
- 41:01I'm looking at him at Florida, looking at Bob, Bob Chesney at
- 41:08UCLA. As long as the athletic director
- 41:12stays out of it. That guy is a moron.
- 41:16God bless it, I mean. How do you really feel talking
- 41:19about? Bad athletic directors and, and
- 41:22he he is, he is a bad Martin Jarman.
- 41:25He is a bad one. So, you know, it says something
- 41:29when when they put it together, a panel of alums to go make the
- 41:32hire and the athletic director's not included.
- 41:35And that's what they did. So, but Chesney, he's another
- 41:39one who's making all the right moves.
- 41:41Lapoye's also making all the right moves.
- 41:46Yeah. So those are the those are those
- 41:48are three. And along with James Franklin, I
- 41:50think that James Franklin was a really good hire for Virginia
- 41:53Tech. Would either of those three put
- 41:57their team instantly in, you know, mode for playoff or title
- 42:01contention, do you think in first year out the gate or is it
- 42:04going to take some growing pains, if you will?
- 42:08You certainly don't make noise. I don't think that they'll make
- 42:10the playoffs. He'll make noise.
- 42:13OK. Virginia Tech, there's a
- 42:18possibility there, and I think there's a possibility in
- 42:22Florida, too. Yeah, that's going to suck. 3rd
- 42:31place in Florida again. Or probably 5th place.
- 42:34Who am I kidding? OK, so the most baffling hire we
- 42:39didn't talk about the most baffling hire to me is at Tulane
- 42:45where they promoted Will Paul, who was a disaster at Southern
- 42:50Mississippi. And all of a sudden he's the
- 42:51head coach at Tulane. And you know, and you know, I
- 42:59get emails every week and some of the I should start publishing
- 43:02some of those because they're some of them are pretty funny.
- 43:05But there are two coaches where I've gotten a boatload of emails
- 43:10from people when they were let go where they said the guy is a
- 43:14really nice guy, but it just didn't work out.
- 43:18And Will Hall was one of them. I probably had two dozen emails
- 43:22that said that from people who were really involved in that
- 43:26program. They said we wanted it to work.
- 43:27We kept extending it. So, you know, it just never got
- 43:32traction. And so when you hear that about,
- 43:35you know, like he had, he had support there till the end.
- 43:39And now he's the head coach of Tulane, I don't understand.
- 43:41That was just a lazy hire. Feel the same way about U A/B.
- 43:48I mean, you Dilfer, we thought should have never been hired in
- 43:51the 1st place as long as he did, but you fired him after he went
- 43:55two and four. You promoted the offense
- 43:56coordinator, Alex Mortensen. He went two and four and his
- 44:00offense actually was worse the last six games of the season
- 44:03than it was when he was the offense coordinator of the first
- 44:05six games of the season. So I I no idea what UAB is doing
- 44:11down there either. So I expect a terrible year for
- 44:13them as well. Well, he's a, that's another
- 44:16really bad athletic director. He's another one.
- 44:19I did, I don't get it, like, oh, you know, why is he still there?
- 44:22But I don't think anybody wanted that job.
- 44:25I think that they, what they went with was somebody who
- 44:27wanted the job, who was there and who knew, at least knew
- 44:30where the bathrooms were. But there was, they really
- 44:34couldn't attract anyone to that job.
- 44:37And it's, and they have really great fan base, really great
- 44:43alumni support. There's a lot of positives to
- 44:46that job. But if the if they had better
- 44:50management, you know, somebody, if they had a better athletic
- 44:52director and somebody who actually really cared about the
- 44:55program, then I think they would be successful.
- 45:00The resources that they have available to them from the
- 45:02alumni and from their supporters is, is, is.
- 45:06Yeah, there are a lot of schools that would like to have that.
- 45:12Yeah, 01 school. We didn't talk about the the
- 45:14hiring back in the SEC. Kentucky's new coach, yes, from
- 45:21he came over from Oregon. Do you have any thoughts on that
- 45:24guy? Do you think he can move them up
- 45:25the SEC ladder in any way? I do.
- 45:28I think he I think that was a good hire for them too.
- 45:31They he's he's AI think he was a quarterback at Kentucky, but I
- 45:37would take him. He's very familiar with that
- 45:38program. He grew up in Kentucky.
- 45:40Yeah, he's a he's an alum. He's a really good offensive
- 45:43coordinator. So if he can make that leap to
- 45:46head coach that that that one could be a success.
- 45:52Yeah, I guess with Lane Kiffin just taking all the oxygen out
- 45:55of the room, when you talk about the SEC and all the new coaches,
- 45:58he kind of just takes everything out of there.
- 46:01You keep this guy. That guy just fell through the
- 46:02cracks here a little bit. Look, I'm just going to say just
- 46:05because I'm wearing a hat, I am some I'm I'm in the back one of
- 46:09the cars on the lane train. Not all the way like sitting up
- 46:12front asking to drive. But I mean, I could say, oh, we
- 46:16could have a whole show about him.
- 46:17No, we can't. He's a douche.
- 46:19All right, there's a 5 second show.
- 46:20It's over with. Say what you want about the guy
- 46:22personally, but he had less an Ole Miss than what he's going to
- 46:27have here. And the dude did win 10 games a
- 46:30year the last three years. You know, the best thing he did
- 46:34was keep his defensive coordinator Baker, and that
- 46:38defense was good last year. If Sam Levitt is healthy and
- 46:43that's that's a big if it, it's a playoff team, man, I'm sorry
- 46:48for. Sure it is.
- 46:49For sure it is. All right.
- 46:51Let's go down. You know, someone who's had
- 46:53experience with Lame, He's a really good coach.
- 46:57There's no question about it. It's whether you can handle all
- 47:01of the, you know, all of the periphery stuff that comes with
- 47:05him. My one concern is you could say
- 47:09the same thing about Bill Belichick.
- 47:10And I was high on North Carolina last year and that was a train
- 47:13wreck. And I'm surprised he was only #7
- 47:16on your rankings because I thought this dude would be like.
- 47:19Right out of the gate I was bashing that higher.
- 47:21I mean I. Carol, I have to take into
- 47:25account the talent on the roster, of which he had none,
- 47:28starting with Tim's favorite quarterback, Gio Lopez.
- 47:31Garbage. But Lane's got the talent, it's
- 47:34just a matter of how quickly it can all come together.
- 47:36Yeah. Well, I think Gio Lopez was
- 47:39better coached at South Alabama than he was at North Carolina,
- 47:42so I think that's what it was. Yeah, that was.
- 47:44The problem the first. Time.
- 47:51The first sign of trouble is when the coach comes in and
- 47:55starts hiring his friends or relatives.
- 47:58That's not a. That's not a good.
- 48:00When your girlfriend's younger than your starting quarterback,
- 48:02that's also probably. All.
- 48:11Right. Well, I crossed out my question
- 48:14so that's all I got on my end. Do you guys have anything else
- 48:18you want to add? I just my last two in passing
- 48:20that I thought were pretty good hires.
- 48:21Colorado State with Jim Mora, I think he'll bring credibility
- 48:24and discipline to that program. So I like that hire and to
- 48:27replace him at Connecticut, I love that Jason Candle hire.
- 48:31I think that there's some really good potential with that program
- 48:34with him there. So I like both of those hires.
- 48:37Yeah, though I think both of those are good.
- 48:38I was actually surprised that Mora didn't go back to UCLA
- 48:42because they were really high on him and then and then all of his
- 48:46name was at Colorado State. A perfect hire for him, for
- 48:50them. It really, he'll do a really
- 48:52good job there. 01 Final footnote Yeah, Virginia Tech
- 48:58does play at Miami late in November this year.
- 49:01Interesting. Excellent.
- 49:03We'll test it, see if the James Franklin rule applies.
- 49:07The Aces. He'll still lose that.
- 49:08Game but the problem is he could be 8 and 2 going into that game
- 49:13and it might not be you know that huge of a deal what's the
- 49:17you got the rest of his schedule what what's it what's it look
- 49:19like real quick if you don't mind let's.
- 49:21See if I can pull that up. Can't make it any bigger, so we
- 49:26got. No, I'm just curious about their
- 49:28their conference slate. Pitt, Cal, Virginia, Miami, SMU
- 49:32Clemson, Georgia Tech that Stanford in there Boston College
- 49:39Sorry they're one of the teams that have 9 games.
- 49:42ACC what are you doing? Can you figure out your damn?
- 49:45No, they can't. No.
- 49:49The outside of Miami, there's nobody on there that really
- 49:52scares me, I mean. The ACC commissioner is hanging
- 49:56out with Crack Monster. Tech lost their offensive
- 49:59coordinator and Hanes King is gone.
- 50:03Austin College, Pittsburgh's I think on the upswing.
- 50:05Cal, we already talked. I don't know that that's not a,
- 50:09that's not a horrible schedule. Yeah, it's not terrible.
- 50:13So let me ask you guys, what do you think of the high of the out
- 50:18Scottish hire at Auburn? I was going to actually ask you
- 50:21about that. I like it, but that team has
- 50:24lost so much. I, I, I actually want to bet
- 50:31them to beat Baylor in Week 1 because you can see all these
- 50:33South Florida guys coming over. Well, oh, they're in the SEC
- 50:36now. Well, the Baylor defense, as
- 50:38we've learned, is not anywhere near an SEC caliber.
- 50:41I think they can win that. I love what he does offensively,
- 50:45but man, they've lost all three of their quarterbacks to the
- 50:49portal. They lost Cam Coleman.
- 50:50I mean, there is a ton on both sides of the ball that he needs
- 50:53to replace. If he can replace that and they
- 50:57can gel, I don't I don't see them having a problem
- 50:59offensively. And last year that was their
- 51:01issue. Jackson Arnold was terrible, but
- 51:04they bring in Daniels in there for a few games.
- 51:06He was terrible as well. You know, they're they're like
- 51:09LSU defense was not their problem.
- 51:12Offensively, they'll be better. But yeah.
- 51:16Is Byron Brown going to have time to throw the ball or is he
- 51:18going to be scrambling for his life, you know, and injured by
- 51:20Week 7? I love to hire.
- 51:23I I just don't love the current roster.
- 51:26Yeah, it's going to take some time.
- 51:28The depth is lacking on that team severely.
- 51:31They need to build some depth out.
- 51:32And the upside of the offense is, is is there.
- 51:34And I think it will, it will happen, but it's going to take a
- 51:37little time. Yeah, the, the problem with that
- 51:40job is the what you just said, the patients like that, they've
- 51:43got inpatient donors and you know, they, you know, they've
- 51:47pulled the plug on how many of the last coaches that they've
- 51:51had. You can go back, you know, and
- 51:54so I, I'm just, if I were, if I were Alex, I don't know that I
- 51:59would have taken that job because of that, because it's
- 52:02going to take you're going to need some patience.
- 52:04They're going to need to and they just don't have it there.
- 52:07They, you know, they, they fire the coach at the drop of a hat.
- 52:11So I don't know. That's all.
- 52:14That's a really rough job. Rough as Arkansas, though,
- 52:19because there were reports that come out that he had accepted
- 52:21the Arkansas job and then his camp came out and said no, we
- 52:24didn't. And like 72 hours later he's
- 52:26coaching Auburn. So that's why.
- 52:27He's like. Lesser of two evils.
- 52:29I'll take Auburn over Arkansas any day of the week.
- 52:33But I think he was supposed to be.
- 52:34The Arkansas guy. I would have taken the Arkansas
- 52:37job over this one, Bill. Look, I thought you gave Sam
- 52:40Pittman they, you know. I agree.
- 52:44You could have stability at Arkansas.
- 52:45I I think you could. I think you can build a program
- 52:48there. You could have some time to do
- 52:49it there. I think that fan base would
- 52:51support you there. I think.
- 52:52I think that would be the better job.
- 52:54I would rather go to Arkansas. That's a that's a great fan base
- 52:58there. If they're really on board with
- 52:59you, they're really They're all in, yeah.
- 53:03Yeah. All right.
- 53:06Well, that was a good hour. It went by pretty quickly.
- 53:09I thought this. Is a lot of fun.
- 53:11Yeah, this is great. I.
- 53:12Enjoyed it a lot. Yeah.
- 53:15You know what? That's right.
- 53:16You know, my dog's been sitting here.
- 53:17Bubba's been sitting here the whole time.
- 53:19He has not made one sound nice. Yeah, I got mine sitting right
- 53:24here. She hasn't made a pee pee but we
- 53:26haven't made any pics. Usually when I make a bad maybe
- 53:28she'll start barking so. You were actually thinking of
- 53:30having Bubba replacing you at some point last year.
- 53:33You. Know.
- 53:35You would have. Done better than I.
- 53:39Yeah, my, my new puppy is over there.
- 53:41I was asking the wife, you're going to be home before 7 or
- 53:43after 8. I'm like, because I'll record
- 53:45downstairs if you're home to watch the demon.
- 53:48I'm upstairs and she's actually slept the entire time.
- 53:52Thank. Goodness, fantastic.
- 53:55All right. Well, that'll wrap it up for the
- 53:56first show of the offseason for 26.
- 53:58Darren, what's our next show going to be coming up?
- 54:01Yeah, we've got, we're, we're done for February.
- 54:04We've got a couple shows lined up in March our our famous
- 54:08bankroll management show, which, yes, is incredibly boring but
- 54:11incredibly important. Very important.
- 54:14With 40 states now eligible to bet on sports, we'll, we'll go
- 54:17over some some tips and tricks to to keep your bankroll at the
- 54:21one deposit that you start with for, for the entire season.
- 54:25And then a couple weeks after that we have our national
- 54:29championship preview show. Those odds are out at all the
- 54:32major sports books, and we might actually have a a guest for that
- 54:39as well. That's right, Doc Sports, right?
- 54:41Yeah, some guy from Doc Sports is actually planning on joining
- 54:43us, so we'll see if that works out.
- 54:48The corner handler, he's in. So we'll see.
- 54:52That's right. See how that goes.
- 54:53But Yep. And then April kicks off, I
- 54:57think, well, we got a Heisman preview I think to start April
- 54:59and then like mid-april, right through August.
- 55:01It's conference previews every week or every two weeks
- 55:05depending on what conference. We're doing all right.
- 55:10Well, let's go do it. Mark, thank you so much for
- 55:12joining us, all you people. Thank you for listening.

- 55:30management show. We'll see you then.
