- 0:31Speaker 2: And I am extra excited about this year's episode because
- 0:35Speaker 2: I think it's a topic that a lot of people
- 0:38Speaker 2: are interested in. We're going to be talking about the
- 0:41Speaker 2: Mother Mary tonight and why God chose her her humility.
- 0:46Speaker 2: We're going to talk about this prayer that she gives
- 0:49Speaker 2: in Luke chapter one that actually is very very similar
- 0:53Speaker 2: to another prayer that we've actually already read on the
- 0:56Speaker 2: podcast before, way back in First Samuel chapter two. Let's
- 1:00Speaker 2: go ahead and dive into the episode. Luke chapter one
- 1:03Speaker 2: versus twenty six through fifty six is what I'm going
- 1:06Speaker 2: to be reading for you guys today, and then we'll
- 1:08Speaker 2: be discussing this. This is talking about the Mother Mary
- 1:11Speaker 2: learning that she is about to give birth to the
- 1:13Speaker 2: Son of God. So I'll be reading this as I
- 1:16Speaker 2: always do, from the web. But grab your favorite version
- 1:19Speaker 2: of the Bible and also your cup of hot coco
- 1:21Speaker 2: to share with me. Even though I am not recording
- 1:23Speaker 2: this live. You know, I never record my episodes live.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I do pre record them. I can I share you guys,
- 1:29Speaker 2: I am tuning in with all of you and listening
- 1:32Speaker 2: right alongside you. Guys. Yes, I am listening it to
- 1:35Speaker 2: my own episode. And perhaps I also have a cup
- 1:38Speaker 2: of hot coco with me as well, so I hope
- 1:40Speaker 2: to share that with you guys. So let's dive into
- 1:42Speaker 2: Luke one twenty six through fifty six on this lovely
- 1:45Speaker 2: Christmas morning. Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel
- 1:51Speaker 2: was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
- 1:54Speaker 2: to a virgin pledged to be married to a man
- 1:56Speaker 2: whose name was Joseph of David's House. The virgin's name Mary.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Having come in, the Angel said to her, rejoice, you
- 2:04Speaker 2: highly favored one. The Lord is with you. Blessed are
- 2:07Speaker 2: you among women. But when she saw him, she was
- 2:10Speaker 2: greatly troubled at the saying and considered what kind of
- 2:13Speaker 2: salutation this might be. The Angel said to her, don't
- 2:17Speaker 2: be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold,
- 2:20Speaker 2: you will conceive in your womb and give birth to
- 2:22Speaker 2: a son, and shall name him Jesus. He will be
- 2:25Speaker 2: great and will be called the Son of the Most High.
- 2:28Speaker 2: The Lord God will give him the throne of his
- 2:30Speaker 2: father David, and he will reign over the house of
- 2:33Speaker 2: Jacob forever. There will be no end to his kingdom.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Mary said to the angel, how can this be, Seeing
- 2:39Speaker 2: I am a virgin. The Angel said to her, the
- 2:42Speaker 2: Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of
- 2:44Speaker 2: the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, also the Holy
- 2:48Speaker 2: One who is born from you will be called the
- 2:49Speaker 2: Son of God. Behold, Elizabeth, your relative also has conceived
- 2:53Speaker 2: a son in her old age, and this is the
- 2:55Speaker 2: sixth month with her who was called Baron. For nothing
- 2:58Speaker 2: spoken by God is impossible. Mary said, behold, I am
- 3:02Speaker 2: the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to
- 3:04Speaker 2: me according to your word. Then the angel departed from her.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Mary arose in those days and went into the hill
- 3:10Speaker 2: country with haste into a city of Judah, and entered
- 3:13Speaker 2: into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth
- 3:17Speaker 2: heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and
- 3:20Speaker 2: Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She called out
- 3:24Speaker 2: with a loud voice and said, blessed are you among women,
- 3:27Speaker 2: and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why am
- 3:30Speaker 2: I so favored that the mother of my Lord should
- 3:32Speaker 2: come to me. For behold, when the voice of your
- 3:35Speaker 2: greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped in my
- 3:37Speaker 2: womb for joy. Blessed is she who believed, for there
- 3:41Speaker 2: will be a fulfillment of the things which have been
- 3:43Speaker 2: spoken to her from the Lord. Mary said, my soul
- 3:46Speaker 2: magnifies the Lord. My spirit has rejoiced in God, my savior,
- 3:51Speaker 2: for he has looked at the humble state of his servant.
- 3:54Speaker 2: For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blest,
- 3:58Speaker 2: For he who is mighty has done great things for me.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Holy is his name. His mercy is for generations and
- 4:04Speaker 2: generations on those who fear him. He has shown strength
- 4:07Speaker 2: with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the
- 4:10Speaker 2: imagination of their hearts. He has put down princes from
- 4:13Speaker 2: their thrones, and has exalted the lowly. He has filled
- 4:16Speaker 2: the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich
- 4:19Speaker 2: away empty. He has given help to Israel, his servant,
- 4:22Speaker 2: that he might remember mercy as he spoke to our fathers,
- 4:26Speaker 2: to Abraham and his offspring forever. Mary stayed with her
- 4:30Speaker 2: for about three months and then returned to her house.
- 4:35Speaker 2: The story of Mary is such a beautiful one I
- 4:37Speaker 2: can see why people really exalt her around Christmas time,
- 4:41Speaker 2: you know, because she was so humble, she was highly
- 4:45Speaker 2: favored by God, is what it says. So let's get
- 4:47Speaker 2: into the story. In verse twenty six, it says, in
- 4:50Speaker 2: the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God
- 4:53Speaker 2: to a city of Galilee named Nazareth. So what is
- 4:56Speaker 2: this sixth month that we're talking about here, Well, this
- 4:59Speaker 2: would have been the same month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, because
- 5:02Speaker 2: right before this the whole story of Elizabeth was told.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And so Elizabeth, this old woman and also Mary's cousin,
- 5:11Speaker 2: was given this message that she would become pregnant in
- 5:15Speaker 2: her old age, even though she had been barren her
- 5:18Speaker 2: entire life, and so that ended up happening. And so
- 5:21Speaker 2: in the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, the angel Gabriel
- 5:24Speaker 2: was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
- 5:28Speaker 2: to a virgin pledged to be married to a man
- 5:30Speaker 2: whose name was Joseph of David's house. The virgin's name
- 5:34Speaker 2: was Mary. So now Gabriel is sent to Nazareth, which,
- 5:39Speaker 2: by the way, I learned something really funny about the
- 5:41Speaker 2: name Nazareth. If you translate Nazareth. Into English, it means Shootsville, okay.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And the reason that's funny is because in Isaiah eleven,
- 5:53Speaker 2: verse one, it says a shoot will come up from
- 5:56Speaker 2: the stump of Jesse. From his roots, a branch will
- 5:59Speaker 2: bear fruit.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:01Speaker 2: So according to scripture, Jesus was a shoot. And after
- 6:04Speaker 2: Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph did live in Nazareth
- 6:08Speaker 2: once again. And so as Jesus was growing up, he
- 6:10Speaker 2: was called Jesus of Nazareth. So he was literally Jesus
- 6:15Speaker 2: the Shoot. Okay, that's what people called him. And yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 2: Isaiah eleven, verse one says a shoots will come up
- 6:22Speaker 2: from the stump of Jesse. So that's just an interesting
- 6:24Speaker 2: little piece of prophecy for you right there. That Nazareth
- 6:28Speaker 2: means Shootsville in English. And that is where this little
- 6:31Speaker 2: shoot Jesus grew up. And so Mary, who was a virgin,
- 6:36Speaker 2: lived in Nazareth. It said that she was a virgin
- 6:38Speaker 2: pledged to be married to a man whose name was
- 6:41Speaker 2: Joseph of David's house. So she was engaged to Joseph.
- 6:46Speaker 2: And back in these days, there were three steps of engagement.
- 6:48Speaker 2: The first was the promises between the two families. The
- 6:52Speaker 2: second was the promises between the two individual people that
- 6:56Speaker 2: were getting married, and then the third was the actual
- 6:58Speaker 2: marriage itself, where the groom would come and get his
- 7:01Speaker 2: wife after the house was built during a set period
- 7:05Speaker 2: of time or whatever. So there are three steps to
- 7:07Speaker 2: marriage back in these days, and Mary and Joseph were
- 7:10Speaker 2: on the second stage. This means that they weren't technically
- 7:14Speaker 2: married yet, they weren't able to do like any of
- 7:17Speaker 2: the fun things in marriage, if you catch my drift,
- 7:20Speaker 2: but they were pledged to each other, so they were
- 7:22Speaker 2: technically considered married, which means that if any infidelity happened
- 7:27Speaker 2: during this time, a divorce proceeding would actually have to
- 7:30Speaker 2: take place. So Mary definitely understood the gravity of what
- 7:33Speaker 2: this angel was about to tell her. It says, having
- 7:36Speaker 2: come in, the Angel said to her, rejoice, you highly
- 7:38Speaker 2: favored one.
- 7:39Speaker 1: The Lord is with you.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Blessed are you among women. So this says the angel
- 7:43Speaker 2: just like walked in, probably to like Mary's room or
- 7:46Speaker 2: house or something. Maybe she was the only person there,
- 7:49Speaker 2: so the angel just like walks right in, and it
- 7:51Speaker 2: says that when Mary saw him, she was greatly troubled
- 7:54Speaker 2: at the saying and considered what kind of salutation this
- 7:57Speaker 2: might be. So she was scared. I mean, by all means,
- 8:01Speaker 2: she was definitely scared that an angel just like walked
- 8:03Speaker 2: into her house and told her that she was highly
- 8:07Speaker 2: favored before God and that the Lord is with her.
- 8:11Speaker 2: You know, can you imagine just like an angel walking
- 8:13Speaker 2: into your room, like when you're the only person there
- 8:16Speaker 2: and telling you the Lord is with you. You'd be like,
- 8:20Speaker 2: what does God want me to do? That he is
- 8:23Speaker 2: with me? And I imagine Mary was also feeling that
- 8:28Speaker 2: kind of fear. You know, it's not every single day
- 8:30Speaker 2: you get visited by an angel and told something like that.
- 8:34Speaker 2: So the angel calms her fears. He says, don't be afraid, Mary,
- 8:38Speaker 2: for you have found favor with God, and then he
- 8:40Speaker 2: gives her the message, behold, you will conceive in your
- 8:43Speaker 2: womb and give birth to a son, and shall name
- 8:46Speaker 2: him Jesus. He will be great and will be called
- 8:50Speaker 2: the Son of the Most High the Lord God will
- 8:53Speaker 2: give him the throne of his father David, and he
- 8:55Speaker 2: will reign over the House of Jacob forever. There will
- 8:58Speaker 2: be no end to his case. Now, later on in
- 9:01Speaker 2: this episode, we're going to find out that Mary actually
- 9:04Speaker 2: knew the scriptures very well, she would have known that
- 9:07Speaker 2: he was talking about the Messiah, the Son of God.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Now at this point in time, Israel was waiting desperately
- 9:12Speaker 2: for their Messiah, and now Mary is told that she
- 9:16Speaker 2: is going to be the mother of the Messiah. And
- 9:19Speaker 2: that does not mean that she really knew what that meant, because,
- 9:22Speaker 2: as we've discovered, going through the New Testament, people had
- 9:25Speaker 2: a lot of misplaced ideas as to who the Messiah
- 9:29Speaker 2: was supposed to be. So I'm sure Mary had some
- 9:31Speaker 2: of those misplaced ideas as well. So she didn't quite understand,
- 9:36Speaker 2: i imagine, who the Messiah was going to be. But
- 9:38Speaker 2: she knew now that she was going to be the
- 9:41Speaker 2: mother of the Messiah, and that she was supposed to
- 9:43Speaker 2: call his name Jesus, which by the way, was a
- 9:46Speaker 2: very common name. It's just the Greek form of the
- 9:49Speaker 2: name Joshua, which means the Lord saves. So Jesus or
- 9:53Speaker 2: Joshua was a very common name back in these days.
- 9:56Speaker 2: As it is today, you know, Joshua still a very
- 9:58Speaker 2: common name. So this baby is going to have a
- 10:01Speaker 2: common name, but he is not going to be a
- 10:03Speaker 2: common person. The angel says he is going to be
- 10:06Speaker 2: called Great and son of the Most High. The Lord
- 10:10Speaker 2: will give him the throne of his father David, and
- 10:12Speaker 2: he will reign over the House of Jacob forever. There
- 10:15Speaker 2: will be no end to his kingdom. And so Mary
- 10:18Speaker 2: of course probably has like a trillion questions over like
- 10:22Speaker 2: what is going to happen, what is this going to
- 10:25Speaker 2: look like, and how so she narrows it down to
- 10:28Speaker 2: just one question. She says to the Angel, how can
- 10:32Speaker 2: this be seeing I am a virgin and I do
- 10:35Speaker 2: wonder If she was wondering is this going to happen
- 10:38Speaker 2: in the future like with Joseph or is this supposed
- 10:42Speaker 2: to happen right now? And the Angel answers that question.
- 10:46Speaker 2: He says to her, the Holy Spirit will come on you,
- 10:49Speaker 2: and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore,
- 10:52Speaker 2: also the Holy One who is born from you will
- 10:55Speaker 2: be called the Son of God. So, in other words,
- 10:57Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit was going to form this baby in
- 11:01Speaker 2: Mary's womb. This was not going to be done through
- 11:03Speaker 2: the normal man and woman relationship, but through the Holy
- 11:07Speaker 2: Spirit himself, and the Angel then gives Mary proof as
- 11:12Speaker 2: to how this is going to happen. He helps her
- 11:15Speaker 2: solidify her belief. He says, behold, Elizabeth, your relative has
- 11:19Speaker 2: also conceived a son in her old age, and this
- 11:22Speaker 2: is the sixth month with her who is called a
- 11:25Speaker 2: baron for nothing spoken by God is impossible. And Mary,
- 11:29Speaker 2: i'm sure, is processing that because she didn't know that
- 11:32Speaker 2: Elizabeth was pregnant. She didn't know, because it actually says
- 11:36Speaker 2: in Elizabeth's story that she hid herself away for like
- 11:40Speaker 2: six months because I think she was probably shocked over
- 11:45Speaker 2: the fact that she was old and pregnant and never
- 11:48Speaker 2: was able to get pregnant before. So Elizabeth didn't actually
- 11:51Speaker 2: tell anybody until much later that she was pregnant. So Mary,
- 11:55Speaker 2: even if they were very close cousins, wouldn't have known
- 11:58Speaker 2: that Elizabeth was pregnant. She is hearing this now from
- 12:01Speaker 2: the Angel for the very first time, and she's probably like,
- 12:03Speaker 2: oh my gosh, Elizabeth is pregnant. That's crazy. And so
- 12:07Speaker 2: Mary answers the Angel, behold, the servant of the Lord,
- 12:12Speaker 2: let it be done to me according to your word.
- 12:15Speaker 2: And once again she understands the weightiness of this situation
- 12:20Speaker 2: that if she gets pregnant before Joseph takes her as
- 12:25Speaker 2: his full wife, that is very, very bad.
- 12:28Speaker 1: For her.
- 12:29Speaker 2: It could possibly even mean death for her. She understands this,
- 12:33Speaker 2: and yet she says to the angel, I am the
- 12:35Speaker 2: servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me
- 12:37Speaker 2: according to your word. So Mary has faith that God
- 12:41Speaker 2: is going to take care of her and that the
- 12:43Speaker 2: baby is going to be safe and taken care of
- 12:45Speaker 2: as well. Even though this could mean that Joseph is
- 12:49Speaker 2: going to completely divorce her and want nothing to do
- 12:53Speaker 2: with her, Mary says, I am the servant of the Lord.
- 12:58Speaker 2: And this is very different from a lot of other
- 13:01Speaker 2: people who hear messages from angels. You know, I can
- 13:05Speaker 2: imagine if me and Garrett were first getting married, I
- 13:09Speaker 2: wouldn't have the same response Mary had when Garrett and
- 13:13Speaker 2: I were engaged. You know, if I got pregnant during
- 13:16Speaker 2: the time Garrett and I were engaged, I never would
- 13:18Speaker 2: have gotten married to Garrett. He would have been like,
- 13:20Speaker 2: absolutely not, He wouldn't have believed me. I would have
- 13:22Speaker 2: had all those questions and concerns because I would have
- 13:25Speaker 2: wanted to marry my husband. And yet Mary chose God
- 13:30Speaker 2: over her relationship with her future husband. And that is,
- 13:35Speaker 2: oh my gosh, like counter cultural to like what most
- 13:40Speaker 2: girls do. You know, most girls, myself included, want that
- 13:44Speaker 2: relationship so bad, want to feel loved so badly that
- 13:48Speaker 2: that we're willing to do like anything for it. And
- 13:50Speaker 2: yet Mary, you can see now why she was so
- 13:53Speaker 2: highly favored with God. She was willing to put her
- 13:57Speaker 2: faith and trust in God over her future relationship with
- 14:02Speaker 2: her husband, which is absolutely amazing to me. So the
- 14:06Speaker 2: angel departs from her, and Mary almost immediately arose in
- 14:11Speaker 2: those days and went into the hill country with haste,
- 14:14Speaker 2: into a city of Judah, and entered into the house
- 14:17Speaker 2: of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. So I imagine that you know,
- 14:21Speaker 2: Mary is practically running to get to Elizabeth's house, especially
- 14:26Speaker 2: as she gets closer. She runs right in. She says, Elizabeth, Elizabeth,
- 14:30Speaker 2: it's Mary, I'm here. And when Elizabeth hears Mary's greeting,
- 14:34Speaker 2: the baby inside her leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth
- 14:38Speaker 2: was filled with the Holy Spirit. She called with a
- 14:42Speaker 2: loud voice, and she said, blessed are you among women,
- 14:45Speaker 2: and blessed is the fruit of your womb. So how
- 14:48Speaker 2: in the world would Elizabeth know about this? Because she
- 14:50Speaker 2: was filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was
- 14:53Speaker 2: prophesying through her, and Elizabeth got the special knowledge about Mary.
- 14:57Speaker 2: You know, Elizabeth didn't know that Mary was pregnant with
- 14:59Speaker 2: the Messiah, and yet she's prophesying to Mary. And I
- 15:03Speaker 2: can imagine this is also solidifying Mary's faith, you know,
- 15:07Speaker 2: if she was having any questions or doubts about this.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Now Elizabeth, who didn't even know she was pregnant or
- 15:13Speaker 2: that the Angel appeared to her, is saying, blessed are
- 15:16Speaker 2: you among women? And blessed is the fruit of your womb,
- 15:19Speaker 2: in other words, your baby inside you. Why am I
- 15:23Speaker 2: so favored that the mother of my Lord should come
- 15:26Speaker 2: to me? For behold, when the voice of your greeting
- 15:29Speaker 2: came into my ears, the baby leaped in my womb
- 15:32Speaker 2: for joy. Blessed is she who believed, for there will
- 15:35Speaker 2: be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken
- 15:38Speaker 2: to her from the Lord. So Elizabeth is prophesying all
- 15:41Speaker 2: these beautiful things to Mary, saying, Mary, you are blessed
- 15:43Speaker 2: among women. You are the mother of my Lord. Who
- 15:47Speaker 2: am I that I get to be visited by the
- 15:49Speaker 2: mother of my Lord? You know, the baby inside me
- 15:52Speaker 2: when he heard your greeting, he was leaping in my
- 15:54Speaker 2: womb for joy. And I'm sure Mary is also so
- 15:58Speaker 2: excited at this point, you know, truly trusting in God.
- 16:03Speaker 2: And so she says in verse forty six, and this
- 16:06Speaker 2: is the prayer that she gives. This is called the Magnificat.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Okay.
- 16:10Speaker 2: The other day I called it the magnificit. My husband
- 16:13Speaker 2: was calling it the magnific cat, and I was like,
- 16:15Speaker 2: I don't think that's right. It's the magnifica cot Okay,
- 16:19Speaker 2: I looked it up. This is a beautiful song or
- 16:23Speaker 2: prayer that Mary states right after Elizabeth gives her all
- 16:27Speaker 2: of these words of prophecy. So Mary says in verse
- 16:31Speaker 2: forty six, my soul magnifies the Lord. And by the way,
- 16:35Speaker 2: that's why it's called the magnificat, for the word magnifies,
- 16:39Speaker 2: my soul magnifies the Lord. My spirit has rejoiced in God,
- 16:44Speaker 2: my Savior. Now, the one interesting thing about this prayer
- 16:48Speaker 2: that Mary gives, it's actually very similar to a prayer
- 16:51Speaker 2: found in First Samuel, chapter two with this woman named Hannah.
- 16:56Speaker 2: And I did talk about this on the podcast before.
- 16:58Speaker 2: We've discussed hand Hannah and her son Samuel. But Hannah
- 17:03Speaker 2: was a woman who was the second wife of this
- 17:07Speaker 2: guy named Elcana. Okay, and she was unable to have
- 17:11Speaker 2: children through no fault of her own. But the other
- 17:15Speaker 2: wife of Elkana was able to have all of these children,
- 17:18Speaker 2: and her name was Panina, and Panina was always making
- 17:21Speaker 2: fun of Hannah and just like completely bullying her. Really
- 17:25Speaker 2: really terrible situation that Hannah was stuck in. So Hannah
- 17:28Speaker 2: goes to the temple of God and she's praying before
- 17:31Speaker 2: God and she's praying so fervently that it looks like
- 17:35Speaker 2: she's drunk. And so Eli, the High Priest, goes up
- 17:38Speaker 2: to her and he's like, put away your wine. You
- 17:40Speaker 2: shouldn't be drinking in the Lord's temple. And Hannah's like, no, no, no, no,
- 17:44Speaker 2: I'm not drinking. I'm praying fervently to God, like I
- 17:47Speaker 2: am so distressed. So then Eli gives her a blessing
- 17:51Speaker 2: and he's like, may God bless you with whatever you
- 17:53Speaker 2: asked him to do for you, May he do it
- 17:55Speaker 2: for you. So then Hannah has so much faith after
- 17:58Speaker 2: that confrontation and blessing she had from Eli. She goes
- 18:02Speaker 2: back home and her face is just completely lit up
- 18:07Speaker 2: because she trusts that God is going to give her
- 18:10Speaker 2: a child, and God actually does it for her. So
- 18:14Speaker 2: when Hannah has this baby, right afterward, it says in
- 18:17Speaker 2: First Samuel, chapter two, Hannah prayed this prayer to God,
- 18:21Speaker 2: and it is very, very similar to the magnificat. Actually,
- 18:27Speaker 2: it starts out by saying, in First Samuel two, verse one,
- 18:30Speaker 2: my heart exalts in Yahweh. My horn is exalted in Yahweh.
- 18:35Speaker 2: My mouth is enlarged over my enemies because I rejoice
- 18:38Speaker 2: in your salvation. And let's see the similarities between that
- 18:42Speaker 2: first verse and what Mary says. Mary says, my soul
- 18:46Speaker 2: magnifies the Lord. My spirit has rejoiced in God, my savior,
- 18:51Speaker 2: for he looked at the humble state of his servant.
- 18:53Speaker 2: For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.
- 18:58Speaker 2: And this really shows that that Mary knew the scriptures.
- 19:02Speaker 2: She was not somebody who didn't believe in Yahweh. She
- 19:07Speaker 2: not only believed in Yahweh and had faith in Yahweh,
- 19:09Speaker 2: but she knew the scriptures enough to use Hannah's prayer,
- 19:15Speaker 2: which was a similar situation to her own in a
- 19:18Speaker 2: way because it had to do with pregnancy and faith
- 19:21Speaker 2: in God. And Mary made that prayer of Hannah's her own.
- 19:25Speaker 2: But I do want to focus here on verse forty seven.
- 19:27Speaker 2: For a second, Mary says, my spirit has rejoiced in God,
- 19:31Speaker 2: my Savior. This verse means that Mary needed a savior,
- 19:36Speaker 2: so she was not a sinless woman as some people
- 19:39Speaker 2: like to claim. There's actually no biblical evidence for the
- 19:43Speaker 2: Immaculate conception, but there is evidence that Mary herself knew
- 19:50Speaker 2: she needed a savior, which is why she praised this prayer.
- 19:54Speaker 2: My spirit has rejoiced in God, my Savior. And he
- 19:57Speaker 2: might be like, well, maybe it's because Mary was overly
- 20:00Speaker 2: humble that she believed she needed a savior, but she
- 20:04Speaker 2: didn't actually need a savior. But again, there's no biblical
- 20:07Speaker 2: evidence for the Immaculate conception, but there is biblical evidence
- 20:12Speaker 2: right here for Mary needing a savior. Scripture says all
- 20:17Speaker 2: have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
- 20:21Speaker 2: And we know of three different times in scripture where
- 20:25Speaker 2: Jesus actually did correct his mother Mary. The first time
- 20:30Speaker 2: was when Jesus was twelve years old and Mary didn't
- 20:33Speaker 2: understand why Jesus had stayed behind in the temple. Jesus
- 20:37Speaker 2: corrected both Mary and Joseph at that time. Then at
- 20:41Speaker 2: the wedding of Cana when Mary wanted Jesus to perform
- 20:44Speaker 2: a miracle and Jesus was like, what does this have
- 20:47Speaker 2: to do with me? That was the second time, and
- 20:50Speaker 2: then the third time was when Mary was trying to
- 20:53Speaker 2: get Jesus to stop talking about being the Messiah, and
- 20:57Speaker 2: Jesus gently corrected his mother then as well. So we
- 21:01Speaker 2: know that Mary. You know, she was not sinless. She
- 21:04Speaker 2: had her flaws, but that doesn't mean she wasn't highly
- 21:08Speaker 2: favored by God or more faithful than like ninety percent
- 21:11Speaker 2: of human beings out there, maybe even more than that.
- 21:14Speaker 2: She was a faithful, godly, God honoring woman, and that
- 21:19Speaker 2: is why God chose her out of all other women
- 21:23Speaker 2: in Mary's time period. He chose her because she was
- 21:26Speaker 2: up for the task, she had faith in God, and
- 21:29Speaker 2: not only that, I highly recommend if you guys haven't yet,
- 21:33Speaker 2: to read Person of Interest by Jay Warner Wallace. It
- 21:38Speaker 2: was one of the best books I ever read about
- 21:40Speaker 2: why Jesus had to come in the time period that
- 21:43Speaker 2: he came in. And that's another reason why God chose
- 21:46Speaker 2: Mary was because she was a young woman in the
- 21:49Speaker 2: perfect time period when Jesus had to come. So my
- 21:52Speaker 2: point is Mary needed a savior, and Mary herself knew
- 21:56Speaker 2: she needed a savior. She says in verse forty eight,
- 21:59Speaker 2: he has looked at the humble state of his servant.
- 22:01Speaker 2: For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.
- 22:05Speaker 2: And that is absolutely true. Like Mary was looking to
- 22:08Speaker 2: the future that every generation was going to call her
- 22:11Speaker 2: a blessed woman. Obviously she is blessed. She was able
- 22:16Speaker 2: to carry the Messiah in her own body, and she
- 22:20Speaker 2: was called highly favored by God as well. For he
- 22:24Speaker 2: who is mighty has done great things for me. Holy
- 22:28Speaker 2: is his name, verse fifty. His mercy is for generations
- 22:33Speaker 2: and generations on those who fear him. So once again,
- 22:36Speaker 2: that is prophecy that Mary is speaking here, because God's
- 22:39Speaker 2: mercy is for every single generation that has existed and
- 22:44Speaker 2: will exist. You know, Jesus, when he was up on
- 22:47Speaker 2: the cross, he said it is a finished That means
- 22:50Speaker 2: He paid the price for every single person's sins through
- 22:55Speaker 2: the birth of Jesus. Every generation experiences the mercy of
- 23:00Speaker 2: God verse fifty one. He has shown strength with his arm.
- 23:04Speaker 2: He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Now that part is also very similar to Hannah's prayer
- 23:11Speaker 2: in verse Samuel two, which says in verse three, don't
- 23:15Speaker 2: keep talking so exceedingly proudly. Don't let arrogance come out
- 23:19Speaker 2: of your mouth. For Yahweh is a god of knowledge.
- 23:21Speaker 2: By him actions are weighed. So I like that both
- 23:25Speaker 2: prayers from these women include prideful people. How God doesn't
- 23:29Speaker 2: let the proud succeed, but shows grace to the humble.
- 23:33Speaker 2: And then going back to Mary's prayer in verse fifty two,
- 23:36Speaker 2: he has put down princes from their thrones and has
- 23:39Speaker 2: exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things,
- 23:43Speaker 2: and has sent the rich away empty. And again those
- 23:46Speaker 2: things are very similar to Hannah's prayer in First Samuel
- 23:51Speaker 2: two six through ten. Yahweh kills and makes alive. He
- 23:56Speaker 2: brings down to shoal and brings up. Yahweh makes poor
- 24:00Speaker 2: and makes rich. He brings low. He also lifts up.
- 24:03Speaker 2: He raises the poor out of the dust. He lifts
- 24:05Speaker 2: up the needy from the dunghill to make them sit
- 24:07Speaker 2: with princes and inherit the throne of glory. All that
- 24:12Speaker 2: is talking about humility. And again, Mary was a humble woman,
- 24:17Speaker 2: and I think the reason she connected so much with
- 24:19Speaker 2: Hannah's prayer and kind of made it her own was
- 24:23Speaker 2: because she herself was a humble woman. She did not
- 24:26Speaker 2: come from a rich family that we know of. Most
- 24:28Speaker 2: likely she was very poor. She lived in a very
- 24:31Speaker 2: poor city. By the way, Nazareth was not known for
- 24:33Speaker 2: doing anything good. It only had one little well in
- 24:38Speaker 2: the middle of the city, and apparently that well didn't
- 24:40Speaker 2: even produce all that much. So Nazareth was a poor
- 24:43Speaker 2: city that Mary came from, and she was probably poor
- 24:47Speaker 2: as well, living in a poor area. She was a
- 24:50Speaker 2: humble woman. And yet now she, out of all the
- 24:53Speaker 2: women in her time period, is experiencing the grace of God,
- 24:58Speaker 2: all of these beautiful blessings that she gets to be
- 25:01Speaker 2: the mother of the Messiah. She's glorifying God because of that,
- 25:07Speaker 2: not fearful, but excited, not worried what Joseph or anybody
- 25:10Speaker 2: else is going to think of her, but just glorifying
- 25:13Speaker 2: in God. And so she concludes this prayer in verses
- 25:17Speaker 2: fifty four and fifty five. He has given help to Israel,
- 25:20Speaker 2: his servant, that he might remember mercy as he spoke
- 25:24Speaker 2: to our fathers, to Abraham and his offspring forever. So
- 25:28Speaker 2: now Mary isn't just focusing on herself anymore like the
- 25:31Speaker 2: good things that God did for her, even though that's
- 25:33Speaker 2: a big part of it, a big part of the
- 25:34Speaker 2: reason why she's glorifying God. But she also realizes and
- 25:38Speaker 2: recognizes that the Messiah she's going to birth is for everybody,
- 25:43Speaker 2: for every single person. God is fulfilling his promise to
- 25:47Speaker 2: Israel that the prophet said a baby would be born
- 25:52Speaker 2: and this baby would save everybody. Mary recognizes now that
- 25:57Speaker 2: the prophecies are going to come true about her son,
- 26:01Speaker 2: and her son isn't just for herself. He is for everybody.
- 26:05Speaker 2: He is for you, he is for me, He's for
- 26:09Speaker 2: the entire world, and that is why we celebrate his
- 26:12Speaker 2: birth on Christmas Day. And now, fave listeners, I am
- 26:20Speaker 2: going to sing you guys a song, and this one
- 26:23Speaker 2: is one I wrote myself. By the way, I'm really
- 26:26Speaker 2: excited about. It is literally called the Magnificat. I hope
- 26:30Speaker 2: I can sing it for you guys. It is a
- 26:31Speaker 2: little bit high for my voice, and also I'm just
- 26:35Speaker 2: getting over a cold, so we'll see how this goes.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Please forgive me if my voice isn't great. And this
- 26:40Speaker 2: song is actually already up on YouTube on my husband's channel,
- 26:44Speaker 2: which yes he does have a YouTube channel. He creates
- 26:47Speaker 2: Christian AI music. He takes verses from scripture and turns
- 26:51Speaker 2: them into music and he actually does a really really
- 26:54Speaker 2: good job with it. So this song is also up
- 26:56Speaker 2: on my husband's YouTube channel, which I will link in
- 26:58Speaker 2: the description of this episode if you are curious to

- 27:51Speaker 3: a joyful voice.
- 27:54Speaker 4: Blessed are you among women and Mary, Blessed is the
- 28:00Speaker 4: Lord in whom you rejoice.
