Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Mitch McCann: US Correspondent on Joe Biden welcoming Donald Trump back to the White House
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So incoming President elect Donald Trump has met with Biden
- 0:04Speaker 1: at the White House in the Oval Office fireside, and
- 0:07Speaker 1: boy Mitch McCann is with us. That fire was absolutely cranking.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Yes, I know what is freezing over here, Ryan, It
- 0:14Speaker 2: looked like a beautiful morning in the White House for
- 0:17Speaker 2: an awkward conversation. I think we've all had awkward meetings
- 0:19Speaker 2: in our life, but perhaps not as awkward as we
- 0:22Speaker 2: expected that one to be between Joe Biden and Donald Trump,
- 0:26Speaker 2: although it seems on the surface of it they were
- 0:30Speaker 2: happy families. Joe Biden said to Donald Trump, well, mister
- 0:33Speaker 2: President elect, former President Donald congratulations, and he said, welcome
- 0:38Speaker 2: back to the White House, and Donald Trump responded, politics
- 0:41Speaker 2: is tough in many cases, not a very nice world.
- 0:44Speaker 2: But it is a nice world today and I appreciate
- 0:47Speaker 2: it very much. So a lot of smiles and a
- 0:50Speaker 2: lot of handshakes between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, perhaps
- 0:53Speaker 2: a little bit unexpected, Ryan, seeing it seems like they
- 0:56Speaker 2: despise each other usually.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a little weird, a little and I
- 1:00Speaker 1: did wonder whether they'd put this. I counted seven logs
- 1:03Speaker 1: on that fire. I hate to keep going on about
- 1:04Speaker 1: it was that like a metaphor for democracy burning. You know,
- 1:08Speaker 1: it's possible.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I didn't even know it was a real fire, but
- 1:10Speaker 2: it looked very nice. I'd rather be there this.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Morning, cranking. Let's talk about aviation suspending flights they have
- 1:17Speaker 1: out of the US to Haiti.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. America's aviation regulator, that is, the FAA,
- 1:23Speaker 2: has suspended flights to Haiti for thirty days now. That
- 1:26Speaker 2: country has been embroiled in chaos for some time now.
- 1:30Speaker 2: It's estimated by the UN that more than three thousand,
- 1:32Speaker 2: six hundred people have been killed in Haiti since January. Essentially,
- 1:36Speaker 2: the problem is it has been overrun by gangs at
- 1:39Speaker 2: the moment. But three American aircraft, Jet Blue, Spirit and
- 1:43Speaker 2: American Airlines were all hit by bullets on Monday after
- 1:47Speaker 2: flying to the capital, portou Prince. So the FAA has
- 1:50Speaker 2: now said for thirty days, no American flights are going
- 1:53Speaker 2: to Gobia.
- 1:54Speaker 1: All right, Mitch, thank you very much for that much.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Mccinl live from New York. Just so that you know,
- 1:58Speaker 1: Jimmy Carter apparently grew up around wood burning systems throughout
- 2:01Speaker 1: his childhood, so when he got to the White House,
- 2:03Speaker 1: he installed six wooden stoves wood stoves around the building,
- 2:08Speaker 1: so there you go. They're still in operation today, apparently.
