- 0:17Speaker 1: open in orange against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coming up,
- 0:21Speaker 1: DJ Turner has a new number and a new title. Captain,
- 0:25Speaker 1: I'll go one-on-one with one of the Bengals' emerging stars.
- 0:28Speaker 1: We'll also hear from one of my favorite NFL analysts,
- 0:32Speaker 1: Greg Cosell from NFL Films, who shares his thoughts on
- 0:35Speaker 1: Dexter Lawrence, Cassius Howell, and much more. Then, in this
- 0:39Speaker 1: week's Know the Foe segment, we'll check in with Jenna Lane,
- 0:42Speaker 1: who covers the Bucs for ESPN. The Bengals Booth Podcast

- 1:08Speaker 1: edition of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet,
- 1:12Speaker 1: or computer by subscribing, wherever you get your podcasts. It's
- 1:16Speaker 1: the greatest thing since the Funny You Ask podcast. I
- 1:21Speaker 1: appreciate you listening to my podcast, but if you're looking
- 1:24Speaker 1: for another one to add to your rotation, I've recently
- 1:27Speaker 1: discovered Funny You Ask, hosted by actor and comedian Ike Barinholtz.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Here's how it works. He gets a friend from the
- 1:36Speaker 1: entertainment world and then quizzes them on a topic of
- 1:39Speaker 1: their choosing. For example, if I was the guest, I
- 1:43Speaker 1: might say the Bengals. And then Ike would come up
- 1:46Speaker 1: with some pretty challenging trivia questions about my topic. Now
- 1:50Speaker 1: that might not sound that compelling, but he's funny, his
- 1:54Speaker 1: guests are funny, and And while I've only listened to
- 1:56Speaker 1: a couple of episodes, they were both terrific. Here's a
- 2:00Speaker 1: quick word of warning. This is not a podcast to
- 2:02Speaker 1: listen to with your kids in the back seat. It's
- 2:05Speaker 1: a little on the raunchy side. But if you like
- 2:07Speaker 1: pop culture and laughter, then give Funny You Ask a listen. Now,
- 2:13Speaker 1: let's get to football. If you're heading to the game
- 2:16Speaker 1: on Sunday, the Bengals have six words for you to
- 2:18Speaker 1: keep in mind. Be early, get loud, wear orange. They'll
- 2:25Speaker 1: be opening in orange for their third straight home opener,
- 2:28Speaker 1: and Zach Taylor says the jungle can be a big factor,
- 2:31Speaker 1: especially when Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers have the ball.
- 2:36Speaker 2: As soon as the second down play ends and the
- 2:39Speaker 2: 42nd clock starts, Zach Robinson's trying to call the play
- 2:42Speaker 2: to Baker in the headset. At 36, 35 seconds, that's
- 2:45Speaker 2: when you've got to be at your loudest.
- 2:47Speaker 3: So he's got to repeat it.
- 2:48Speaker 2: So then when Baker gets in the huddle, he's got
- 2:50Speaker 2: to repeat it again because the tight end on the
- 2:51Speaker 2: other side can't hear it. And then when he gets
- 2:53Speaker 2: to the line of scrimmage with hopefully six, five, and
- 2:56Speaker 2: he's got to make an adjustment, they can't hear him.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And they've got to take a timeout. So that's what
- 3:01Speaker 2: home field advantage does for you. We've got a really
- 3:04Speaker 2: smart fan base that has always given us that advantage.
- 3:07Speaker 2: And so we've just got to have an environment that's unmatched.
- 3:09Speaker 2: We're capable of that. I've seen it happen a million times.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I'm really excited. I'm glad we're opening at home and
- 3:14Speaker 2: give ourselves that opportunity. That is an advantage in week one,
- 3:17Speaker 2: and we've got to take full advantage of it.
- 3:19Speaker 1: The Bucs have some great weapons on offense, including second-year
- 3:22Speaker 1: wide receiver Emeka Abuka out of Ohio State. If you
- 3:26Speaker 1: think of all the great wide receivers the Buckeyes have
- 3:29Speaker 1: had over the years, none of them caught more passes
- 3:32Speaker 1: at OSU than Abuka. Tampa Bay's number one receiver will
- 3:37Speaker 1: likely be shadowed by Bengals cornerback D.J. Turner, who sat
- 3:41Speaker 1: down with me this week to discuss everything from his
- 3:44Speaker 1: new number to his alma mater's controversial win in week one.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Let's start with your new number. You are wearing the
- 3:52Speaker 1: number zero this year. It's got a lot of swag
- 3:56Speaker 1: to it. Why did you want to wear zero?
- 3:59Speaker 3: Literally just because it's got a lot of swag to it.
- 4:02Speaker 3: That's really the only reason. I mean, and I wanted
- 4:07Speaker 3: a new number. I wore five in college. Obviously, we
- 4:11Speaker 3: know who has five. So I was like, what's a
- 4:13Speaker 3: cool other number? And so I was 20, and I
- 4:16Speaker 3: was like, zero. So that's really how I just thought
- 4:19Speaker 3: about that.
- 4:20Speaker 1: In college football, single-digit numbers are used to reward players.
- 4:26Speaker 1: It could be the toughest guy on the team, the
- 4:27Speaker 1: best leader on the team, or whatever. Did you feel
- 4:31Speaker 1: like when Zach Taylor said, yes, you can have zero,
- 4:34Speaker 1: it was kind of a reward for what you've done?
- 4:36Speaker 3: 100%. Yes, 100%. And that's why I never even asked
- 4:42Speaker 3: until after year three. And not for sure, it was
- 4:46Speaker 3: definitely a big deal. When he gave it to me,
- 4:48Speaker 3: I was definitely happy. Like I said, that was a
- 4:50Speaker 3: big deal.
- 4:51Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about another honor. You were named
- 4:53Speaker 1: a captain earlier this week, one of seven on the
- 4:55Speaker 1: team this year. You said, after the news came out,
- 4:59Speaker 1: all I really care about is being respected by my teammates.
- 5:04Speaker 1: You probably knew that you were respected by your teammates,
- 5:06Speaker 1: but does this show how much? Because they vote on
- 5:10Speaker 1: the captains.
- 5:10Speaker 3: No, for sure. I mean, getting a captain is... I
- 5:15Speaker 3: don't take that lightly at all. Um, that's an honor. And,
- 5:18Speaker 3: you know, I just want to continue to be myself
- 5:20Speaker 3: for the rest of my teammates. Um, that's really what
- 5:24Speaker 3: got me to where I am right now. And that's
- 5:26Speaker 3: what I'm going to continue to do.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Your position coach, Chuck Burke said, DJ is trying to
- 5:31Speaker 1: push everybody to be great. Is that what a captain does?
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say so. It does no good for
- 5:38Speaker 3: only one person to do good. Like it, it literally
- 5:40Speaker 3: doesn't do any good. Um, And winning takes care of everything.
- 5:44Speaker 3: So that's literally the only focus, the only goal is
- 5:47Speaker 3: to win. And we all eat when we win.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Let's go back to the first day of camp when
- 5:53Speaker 1: you got into a scuffle with Jamar. You said, brothers fight.
- 5:58Speaker 1: It's no big deal. But did that set a tone
- 6:02Speaker 1: for how competitive the defense was going to be throughout camp?
- 6:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it definitely did. And I mean, but it set
- 6:09Speaker 3: the tone on both ends. Jamar set the tone for
- 6:12Speaker 3: the offense, and I set the tone for the defense,
- 6:14Speaker 3: and we both were captains. So it was definitely just
- 6:17Speaker 3: a tone setting for the entire team. The urgency, what
- 6:21Speaker 3: you see what's going on, we're trying to win. Like
- 6:23Speaker 3: I said, brother's fight, love Jamar to death, and now
- 6:27Speaker 3: we're just excited to go and play Tampa now.
- 6:30Speaker 1: You basically asked to cover him on every rep during
- 6:33Speaker 1: training camp, and it was tremendous entertainment to watch you
- 6:36Speaker 1: two guys compete. the cliche is if you cover him
- 6:40Speaker 1: every day at practice, you can cover anybody in the NFL,
- 6:43Speaker 1: but is that cliche how you feel about it?
- 6:45Speaker 3: No, no, that's not cliche. That's, that's real. Um, like that,
- 6:50Speaker 3: that is real. I mean, seeing the best every single
- 6:52Speaker 3: day that, that, that only makes you better. And like
- 6:56Speaker 3: I said, likewise for him, like I wanted to go
- 6:57Speaker 3: into the season, going to our, going to the camp,
- 7:00Speaker 3: making sure he got better too. Like it wasn't just
- 7:02Speaker 3: about me. Like I said, this is an entire team.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Like I wanted to, make sure he, I see the
- 7:06Speaker 3: best every day. So I want to make sure he
- 7:08Speaker 3: saw the best every day. Um, so we can both
- 7:10Speaker 3: go out and have a crazy season.
- 7:11Speaker 1: How good of a feeling is it when he's frustrated
- 7:14Speaker 1: because you're blanketing him? Oh man.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, I'm a corner. That's literally what I
- 7:19Speaker 3: get paid to do. So, I mean, yeah, that's, you know,
- 7:22Speaker 3: it was great.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Let's talk about some other wide receivers. What do you
- 7:26Speaker 1: think of Dante Myers?
- 7:27Speaker 3: Man, I love him. Uh, Funny thing is, I played
- 7:30Speaker 3: him in high school. I don't even know if y'all
- 7:31Speaker 3: know that.
- 7:31Speaker 1: No.
- 7:32Speaker 3: So he went to Norcross. I went to North Gwinnett.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Wow.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Another Gwinnett person. You know, that's just what we do.
- 7:37Speaker 3: That's what we do in Gwinnett. No, I'm real happy
- 7:40Speaker 3: for him. His story. Yeah, I mean, it's just determination.
- 7:45Speaker 3: That's really, that's all I see. And like I said,
- 7:49Speaker 3: I don't have the same story as him, but I
- 7:51Speaker 3: know what the mental lock-in is. I know how it
- 7:54Speaker 3: is when you look at yourself in the mirror and
- 7:55Speaker 3: be like, I'm going to do this element. That's exactly
- 7:57Speaker 3: what he did. And I'm very excited for him to,
- 8:00Speaker 3: you know, hit the field, you know, and just show
- 8:03Speaker 3: what he's been working on.
- 8:04Speaker 1: So when he showed up in January, did you go,
- 8:06Speaker 1: wait a second, I know that guy.
- 8:09Speaker 3: So I wasn't here. Remember, I showed up like right
- 8:12Speaker 3: over like phase three minutes from minicamp. And I forgot
- 8:16Speaker 3: what exactly it was. It was like Thursday or Friday.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Maybe it might have been a Friday. I don't know.
- 8:20Speaker 3: But us two were the only one in the weight room.
- 8:22Speaker 3: And so, you know, we was lifting or whatever. And
- 8:25Speaker 3: he was playing music. He was playing music in the
- 8:27Speaker 3: locker room. And all the music that he was playing
- 8:30Speaker 3: was like high school Atlanta. And I was like, so
- 8:35Speaker 3: I literally, I like, this is our first conversation. I
- 8:37Speaker 3: go up to him. I say, where are you from?
- 8:39Speaker 3: And then he was like, Norcross. I said, I knew it.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I knew that we was from the same area. And
- 8:45Speaker 3: so then we talked and then we was like, bro,
- 8:46Speaker 3: I forgot. I forgot we played each other. We played
- 8:48Speaker 3: each other my junior year in high school when he
- 8:52Speaker 3: was at Norcross. I was at Norcross. All right.
- 8:55Speaker 1: You didn't play against Colby Young in high school. I
- 8:57Speaker 1: know that.
- 8:58Speaker 3: No.
- 8:58Speaker 1: What do you think of him?
- 8:59Speaker 3: Good, good. Real big receiver. And like I said, he's
- 9:03Speaker 3: just willing to learn, willing to work. That's all you
- 9:05Speaker 3: really ask for when you come in as a rookie.
- 9:07Speaker 3: If you don't come in thinking you know everything, then
- 9:09Speaker 3: honestly you're good in my book. If you're just trying
- 9:12Speaker 3: to work and just look around, you're in an NFL
- 9:14Speaker 3: locker room. There's the 1% of the 1% in here
- 9:18Speaker 3: in every locker room. So if you just observe and
- 9:20Speaker 3: look around and try to better yourself, that's all you
- 9:23Speaker 3: can ask for as a rookie.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Let's turn to defense and your longtime teammate Dax Hill.
- 9:28Speaker 1: He has proven he can play safety. He can play
- 9:31Speaker 1: slot corner. But he has really thrived since playing outside.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Has he found his best spot?
- 9:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say that. And I've said this since
- 9:41Speaker 3: my second year in the league when he made the transition.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Nobody in the league can do what Dex does. And
- 9:49Speaker 3: I stamp that. I really believe that. He can literally
- 9:54Speaker 3: play every single position in the secondary at a high level.
- 9:56Speaker 3: No one else in the league can do that. For
- 9:59Speaker 3: him to just be able to do that, and now
- 10:01Speaker 3: he's really finding his groove and finding his way, I'm
- 10:04Speaker 3: really excited for him. Like I said, I just can't
- 10:07Speaker 3: wait until this season.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Sounds like you would like him to get more credit
- 10:10Speaker 1: for that versatility.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Oh, that's 100%.
- 10:12Speaker 1: 100%.
- 10:12Speaker 3: A lot of people look at him for what he
- 10:16Speaker 3: did for the outside corner, but His resume is just crazy.
- 10:21Speaker 3: No one can do what he does. No one can
- 10:23Speaker 3: do what he does. He definitely deserves more credit. But
- 10:25Speaker 3: like I said, winning takes care of all that.
- 10:29Speaker 1: You were not the only DJ to have a really
- 10:31Speaker 1: good camp. DJ Ivy had an outstanding training camp. Where
- 10:35Speaker 1: has he grown?
- 10:36Speaker 3: Oh, man. Ivy, he had a crazy camp. I tell
- 10:38Speaker 3: him all the time. And we got a real close connection.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Like I said, we both the same class. Both DJ.
- 10:46Speaker 3: We clicked as soon.
- 10:47Speaker 4: As we met.
- 10:48Speaker 3: And yeah, I've told him all the time, he learned
- 10:50Speaker 3: really well. I mean, polished, on the line, finding the ball,
- 10:56Speaker 3: going against T every day. I mean, it's not an
- 10:59Speaker 3: easy task. And he took it and ran with it.
- 11:02Speaker 3: And I'm just so happy for him, honestly.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Last year, you shared with reporters the impact that meditation
- 11:08Speaker 1: has had on your life and on your playing career.
- 11:11Speaker 1: We are in such a stimulus world these days. We're
- 11:14Speaker 1: constantly on our phones and our tablets, etc., I would
- 11:17Speaker 1: think it would be hard for somebody your age to meditate.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Did you have to learn it, essentially?
- 11:23Speaker 3: 100%. Yes, that takes time. My first ones, I first
- 11:29Speaker 3: started meditating in my second year in the league, right
- 11:32Speaker 3: before I got hurt. I guess, like, so about three,
- 11:36Speaker 3: four weeks before that, I started doing two minutes, three minutes,
- 11:40Speaker 3: you know, like, Then I'll work my way up to
- 11:43Speaker 3: five minutes or whatever. And now, like I said, my
- 11:45Speaker 3: morning routine now is I do a 15-minute meditation in
- 11:48Speaker 3: the sauna. And so that definitely takes a lot of
- 11:51Speaker 3: time to, you know, that's years of continuously. And like
- 11:55Speaker 3: I said, I still have a lot of room to grow.
- 11:57Speaker 3: You know, like that's my routine I do now. But,
- 11:59Speaker 3: you know, I'm definitely trying to, you know, keep on
- 12:01Speaker 3: going and getting better.
- 12:02Speaker 1: So in the sauna, I was wondering if like if
- 12:04Speaker 1: you were in the lotus position and if there were
- 12:06Speaker 1: candles and stuff.
- 12:07Speaker 3: No, I'll do it. My routine now is 15 minutes
- 12:12Speaker 3: in the sauna just in the morning when I get
- 12:13Speaker 3: here as part of just my morning routine.
- 12:17Speaker 1: We have something in common, a love of travel. There
- 12:20Speaker 1: was nothing I would rather spend money on than seeing
- 12:23Speaker 1: parts of the world that I've never seen before. How
- 12:25Speaker 1: did that develop for you?
- 12:27Speaker 3: That's the single best thing I've ever done. It's the
- 12:32Speaker 3: biggest investment you can possibly do to yourself. I am
- 12:36Speaker 3: a huge advocate for traveling. Um, and like I said,
- 12:40Speaker 3: and the people around me really encouraged me to like,
- 12:43Speaker 3: so for example, I realized I was like, well, how
- 12:45Speaker 3: did I get into traveling so much? And really my sister,
- 12:49Speaker 3: when she went to study abroad, she went to study abroad. Um,
- 12:54Speaker 3: while my junior year in college and my senior year
- 12:56Speaker 3: in college, she was in Europe, she's in Greece. And
- 13:00Speaker 3: I was like, nah, nah, you're not about to see
- 13:02Speaker 3: all the world. And I haven't. And so that's really what, um,
- 13:07Speaker 3: you know, so like when I, Went to the league
- 13:10Speaker 3: in my rookie offseason. I remember I texted my sister,
- 13:12Speaker 3: and I was like, all right, where should I go?
- 13:14Speaker 3: And so she was like, and I was like, I'm
- 13:17Speaker 3: going to go solo. And so she was like, I
- 13:19Speaker 3: feel like Bali would be a good one. So I
- 13:20Speaker 3: was like, Bali would be a good one. And so
- 13:23Speaker 3: literally I went to Bali, and I wanted to go
- 13:25Speaker 3: to Tokyo. And so when I did that, I looked
- 13:27Speaker 3: at the layover. The layover was in Tokyo. So I
- 13:29Speaker 3: was like, oh, I'm going to just stay a week
- 13:31Speaker 3: in Tokyo, a week in Bali. And ever since then,
- 13:34Speaker 3: like I said, I take solo trips. I take a
- 13:37Speaker 3: solo trip every year, and then I take a trip
- 13:39Speaker 3: with one of my best friends, his name's Chance. We
- 13:41Speaker 3: have been to, in my three years, like, so this
- 13:44Speaker 3: year we went to Vietnam, the previous year we went
- 13:47Speaker 3: to Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai, and the, I forgot, oh, Koh Samui,
- 13:58Speaker 3: the island of Bangkok. So we've been to that, and
- 14:02Speaker 3: that was just with me, and then solo, I've been
- 14:04Speaker 3: to Bali, Tokyo, I've India. I've been to a lot.
- 14:08Speaker 3: I've been to a lot.
- 14:09Speaker 1: This is crazy to me now because my oldest sister,
- 14:11Speaker 1: who's eight years older than me, was an exchange student
- 14:15Speaker 1: in Argentina. And that's what made me obsessed with travel.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Yeah. Because I really sat down. This is recently, too.
- 14:22Speaker 3: I was like, okay, I know I love travel, but
- 14:24Speaker 3: how did I get into it? I just always ask that.
- 14:27Speaker 5: Why?
- 14:27Speaker 1: How?
- 14:28Speaker 3: And I was like, that's why. And that's exactly why.
- 14:31Speaker 3: And my sister, she flew for free because my aunt
- 14:34Speaker 3: worked for United. So she was really just, and I
- 14:36Speaker 3: was all, no, you're not about to leave me. And
- 14:38Speaker 3: I just, yeah, I just took it to the extreme.
- 14:40Speaker 1: How excited are you to play in Madrid?
- 14:43Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 3: So I actually wanted to go to Madrid. Like, previously,
- 14:46Speaker 3: just I wanted to go to Madrid.
- 14:48Speaker 5: And.
- 14:49Speaker 3: when I saw that on the schedule, I was like, perfect.
- 14:51Speaker 3: And then it's almost on my birthday. Like my birthday
- 14:53Speaker 3: is November 9th. We play November 8th. I mean, I
- 14:55Speaker 3: might as well say I'm in Madrid.
- 14:56Speaker 1: It's your birthday trip.
- 14:57Speaker 3: It's my birthday trip. So I'm really excited. And I'm
- 15:00Speaker 3: playing the Falcons back at home. So I'm really excited.
- 15:03Speaker 1: It's good stuff. Let's get back to defense for a second.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Describe Dexter Lawrence on and off the field.
- 15:09Speaker 3: On the field. Everybody knows on the field. I mean,
- 15:10Speaker 3: he's dominant. I mean, he's just, yeah, like he just
- 15:14Speaker 3: dominates the game. I'm so excited for him to, you know,
- 15:18Speaker 3: really show what he can do. He's shown it, but
- 15:21Speaker 3: it's different when you change teams and everyone's just, everyone's Dexter, Dexter,
- 15:25Speaker 3: like everyone, you know, it's a lot of pressure and
- 15:27Speaker 3: I'm excited for him because I know he's going to
- 15:29Speaker 3: embrace it and then show exactly what he can do.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Teddy bear off the field, grizzly bear on it. Yeah,
- 15:36Speaker 1: sound about right. I think nationally people look at the
- 15:39Speaker 1: additions that the Bengals made on defense and the feeling is, well,
- 15:42Speaker 1: they're probably better, but how much better are they going
- 15:45Speaker 1: to be? How eager are you to get on that
- 15:47Speaker 1: field on Sunday and show, all right, this is what
- 15:50Speaker 1: the Bengals' defense is about?
- 15:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I can't wait. Like I said, when people just say,
- 15:55Speaker 3: what does it want to look like or whatever, the
- 15:57Speaker 3: film speaks for itself. I'm not everyone sitting here. I'm
- 16:00Speaker 3: so confident in this defense, the energy and everything that
- 16:03Speaker 3: we've been doing. And we just got to put it
- 16:05Speaker 3: on film now. That's the only thing we have to do.
- 16:07Speaker 3: And we just keep on doing that, keep on stacking
- 16:10Speaker 3: every week, win every week, and we're going to control
- 16:12Speaker 3: our destiny.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Is opening day hard as a defensive player because you
- 16:16Speaker 1: don't quite know what the other team's going to do?
- 16:18Speaker 3: Yeah, it can be for sure, but it's hard for everybody,
- 16:22Speaker 3: so that means nothing at all. We're just on goal
- 16:27Speaker 3: and take as much information as we can, apply it,
- 16:29Speaker 3: and play ball.
- 16:31Speaker 1: You were a Pro Bowl alternate last year. Is it
- 16:34Speaker 1: important to you to be a Pro Bowler?
- 16:37Speaker 4: Nah.
- 16:38Speaker 3: I mean, I would love it for sure, but like
- 16:42Speaker 3: I said, I mean... My biggest thing is really the captain.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Like I got the respect of my teammates and everything
- 16:50Speaker 3: else will come. Like everything else will come. Like we win,
- 16:53Speaker 3: get better every day. Everything else will come. Like for sure,
- 16:55Speaker 3: of course, winning, being pro bowl and all pro and
- 16:59Speaker 3: all that is definitely milestones you want to reach. But
- 17:03Speaker 3: I'm not, it's not like a, I'm not going to
- 17:05Speaker 3: determine my season off of that because like I said,
- 17:09Speaker 3: like last year, I feel like I had a great season,
- 17:12Speaker 3: but I didn't get that. So it's like, am I
- 17:14Speaker 3: going to tell myself I had a bad season because
- 17:16Speaker 3: of it? No. So when I go into this year,
- 17:19Speaker 3: I was like, I'm not even going to focus on that.
- 17:21Speaker 3: And I'm just going to focus on getting better every day,
- 17:23Speaker 3: getting better for the team and making everybody around me better.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Final crucial question. Did Michigan deserve that win?
- 17:33Speaker 3: Did they deserve it? I mean, I don't know if
- 17:36Speaker 3: they deserved it, but We're going to shake back. We're
- 17:39Speaker 3: going to shake back. And I saw something that just
- 17:42Speaker 3: came out, too, on that. You saw that yesterday? And
- 17:45Speaker 3: it was apparently like they're calling in and trying to
- 17:47Speaker 3: get it overturned.
- 17:48Speaker 1: The MAC is trying to get it overturned. But the
- 17:51Speaker 1: NCAA has already said there's no procedure for doing that.
- 17:53Speaker 6: Oh, they did?
- 17:54Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Okay. Well, we want to know. We want to know.
- 17:58Speaker 3: But it shouldn't be that close, though. But, I mean,
- 18:00Speaker 3: like I said, stuff happened. The ball is football. And,
- 18:04Speaker 3: you know, we got Oklahoma, though, this week. So there's no...
- 18:07Speaker 3: We got Oklahoma, so we'll see.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Congratulations on a tremendous season last year. Thank you for
- 18:14Speaker 1: entertaining me with your daily battles with Jamar Chase during
- 18:17Speaker 1: training camp. Best of luck in 2026.
- 18:19Speaker 3: No, I appreciate it. Thank you very much.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Coming up next, one of my favorite NFL analysts, Greg
- 18:25Speaker 1: Cosell from NFL Films. But first, here's a quick reminder
- 18:29Speaker 1: that the Bengals Booth Podcast is brought to you by Paycor,

- 18:40Speaker 1: community to a new level. And by Kettering Health, the
- 18:44Speaker 1: best care for the best fans. Kettering Health is the
- 18:46Speaker 1: official healthcare provider of the Bengals. It is week one,
- 18:51Speaker 1: and we are coming out of the gates with one
- 18:53Speaker 1: of my favorite guests, the great Greg Cosell from NFL
- 18:57Speaker 1: Films and the ESPN Matchup Show. Greg, let's start with
- 19:00Speaker 1: the Bengals' biggest off-season move, literally and figuratively. the trade
- 19:06Speaker 1: for Dexter Lawrence. He's attended every offseason meeting. He appears
- 19:10Speaker 1: to be in great shape. He sounds motivated. If the
- 19:13Speaker 1: Bengals get the best version of Dexter Lawrence, what are
- 19:17Speaker 1: they getting?
- 19:18Speaker 5: Well, Dexter Lawrence at his best is a top three
- 19:20Speaker 5: D-tackle in the league. He is a dominant, dominant player. And,
- 19:25Speaker 5: you know, there were times in the last couple of
- 19:27Speaker 5: years that he just wrecked games.
- 19:30Speaker 4: So, you know, he's not old. You know, You know
- 19:33Speaker 4: how it is.
- 19:33Speaker 5: When you're on a bad team, people don't think about
- 19:35Speaker 5: you very much and people lose sight of how good
- 19:38Speaker 5: players are.
- 19:40Speaker 4: I mean, I see that all the time.
- 19:41Speaker 5: I'm fortunate enough to do some radio in Nashville and
- 19:45Speaker 5: someone like Jeffrey Simmons, who is just a dominant, dominant force,
- 19:49Speaker 5: I bet there's not a lot of people when you
- 19:50Speaker 5: start talking D tackles immediately say Jeffrey Simmons because the
- 19:54Speaker 5: Titans are a bad team and have been for the
- 19:56Speaker 5: last couple of years. You know, Giants were a bad
- 19:58Speaker 5: team last year, so right away people said, well, gee,
- 20:01Speaker 5: Dexter Lawrence isn't as good as he was. You know,
- 20:04Speaker 5: I don't think that's necessarily true based on studying him
- 20:06Speaker 5: on tape, but he's a dominant player.
- 20:09Speaker 4: And he will instantly make that defense.
- 20:12Speaker 5: The one thing he will really help, too, are the
- 20:14Speaker 5: two second-year linebackers in their 5-2, because you're going to
- 20:17Speaker 5: go with Carter and Knight, who both had ups and
- 20:20Speaker 5: downs as rookies, but both showed that they could play
- 20:23Speaker 5: in the lead, and that will help a lot.
- 20:27Speaker 1: So they traded for Dexter, and they spent $ 125 million
- 20:31Speaker 1: on defensive free agents, Brian Cook, Boye Mafe, Jonathan Allen,
- 20:37Speaker 1: and others. How much better... is the defensive personnel.
- 20:41Speaker 5: Well, I think, you know, again, the game's not played
- 20:44Speaker 5: on paper, as you know, but they needed, clearly, over
- 20:48Speaker 5: these last couple of years, they needed to upgrade the defense.
- 20:50Speaker 5: So I assume, you know, looking at their base defense,
- 20:54Speaker 5: I assume you're going to have Murphy and Moffey on
- 20:56Speaker 5: the outside in their 5-2. I would guess, is it Allen, Warren,
- 20:59Speaker 5: would it be Slayton as the third guy.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Inside, do you think?
- 21:02Speaker 1: Can be B.J.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Hill.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Can be slate. And they've got a lot of depth
- 21:06Speaker 1: at defensive tackle, Chris Jenkins, the rookie Landon Robinson. They've
- 21:10Speaker 1: got a bunch of guys that they can rotate in,
- 21:12Speaker 1: in the middle.
- 21:13Speaker 4: But I mean, if you're talking about defending the run,
- 21:15Speaker 4: if you talk about Alan.
- 21:16Speaker 5: Lawrence and slate, and that's a, that's a pretty good,
- 21:20Speaker 5: I mean, slate is a, is a big man as
- 21:22Speaker 5: well with pretty light feet. So, you know, you have
- 21:25Speaker 5: to figure that the run defense is going to be
- 21:27Speaker 5: significantly better. Um, you know, they needed help clearly at safety.
- 21:32Speaker 5: I mean, I, you know, Cook, I've always liked Cook,
- 21:34Speaker 5: you know, you know him well because of where he
- 21:36Speaker 5: played college ball. And I always liked him coming out.
- 21:39Speaker 5: I thought he was a little more athletic than people
- 21:41Speaker 5: gave him credit for because when he came out and
- 21:44Speaker 5: I did him, of course, evaluated him, a lot of
- 21:46Speaker 5: people just immediately said, oh, well, he's, you know, he's
- 21:48Speaker 5: a box player. And I thought he was better than that.
- 21:50Speaker 5: And I'm not saying he's Earl Thomas, you know, he's
- 21:52Speaker 5: going to be, you know, a post-safety who can run
- 21:55Speaker 5: sideline to sideline. But the way Spaggs used him in, um,
- 21:59Speaker 5: In KC, he was not just a box player by
- 22:01Speaker 5: any means. And, you know, I think he's a good player.
- 22:05Speaker 1: We're visiting with Greg Cosell. I always look forward to
- 22:07Speaker 1: seeing you every year at the NFL Scouting Combine. You
- 22:10Speaker 1: do extensive study of about 200 draft prospects every year.
- 22:14Speaker 1: All of the Bengals draft picks have made their initial
- 22:16Speaker 1: 53-man roster. What did you think of Cassius Howell, Takario
- 22:21Speaker 1: Bobo Davis, Connor Liu, Colby Young, and anybody else you
- 22:26Speaker 1: might want to throw in?
- 22:27Speaker 4: How will I watch for a couple of years? And
- 22:29Speaker 4: he is truly explosive. And I don't know what he's
- 22:32Speaker 4: done in camp. I mean, you're there.
- 22:34Speaker 5: Obviously, I'm not there every day, so I can't speak
- 22:36Speaker 5: to what the day-to-days are. Because what people don't understand,
- 22:39Speaker 5: and you understand this, Dan, you've been doing this a
- 22:40Speaker 5: long time, is the day-to-day is more important to coaches
- 22:44Speaker 5: than the 40 snaps in the preseason games. They've been
- 22:49Speaker 5: with him every day since it started, since OTAs, minicamp,
- 22:52Speaker 5: training camp. So but how I really, really liked a lot,
- 22:58Speaker 5: you know, knowing what he is. I remember watching I
- 23:01Speaker 5: forget what game it was where he had three sacks
- 23:03Speaker 5: on three consecutive plays in college. And, you know, you
- 23:06Speaker 5: just you just see the explosiveness. I mean, quite frankly,
- 23:11Speaker 5: he was just as explosive to me as Bailey, who
- 23:14Speaker 5: was what the fourth pick in the draft.
- 23:17Speaker 4: So we'll see. I mean, you know. Like I said,
- 23:19Speaker 4: I don't think they're.
- 23:20Speaker 5: Going to ask him early on to play 50 or
- 23:22Speaker 5: 60 snaps a game, but I think he'll be a
- 23:23Speaker 5: situational player.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Greg, a big topic of conversation here in Cincinnati throughout
- 23:28Speaker 1: camp was the number of snaps and reps that the
- 23:31Speaker 1: Bengals offense had with Joe Burrow under center as opposed
- 23:35Speaker 1: to in the shotgun. If they're more effective and more
- 23:39Speaker 1: efficient with Joe Burrow under center, what do you think
- 23:42Speaker 1: that would do for the Bengals offense?
- 23:44Speaker 4: I've always liked it and talked about it through the
- 23:47Speaker 4: years for this reason.
- 23:49Speaker 5: Number one, I think that it really gives your run
- 23:51Speaker 5: game a lot more diversity. But number two, in the
- 23:54Speaker 5: play-action-pass game, I think it's really beneficial because it takes
- 24:00Speaker 5: longer for second-level defenders to have to decide and decipher
- 24:05Speaker 5: whether it's run or pass. That's one reason. Another reason is,
- 24:09Speaker 5: particularly if you run some kind of mid-zone or outside zone,
- 24:12Speaker 5: as you run fake, very often defensive linemen's first step
- 24:17Speaker 5: is lateral. and when their first step is lateral in
- 24:21Speaker 5: a game of milliseconds, that's a big deal. Because now
- 24:24Speaker 5: they're not going vertically toward the quarterback, they're going laterally
- 24:28Speaker 5: because of the run element. And then, given that, it
- 24:32Speaker 5: gives your quarterback just that little more time, and now
- 24:35Speaker 5: you can work down the field in your pass game.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Because the majority of the big pass plays in the Bengals'
- 24:42Speaker 4: pass game come on.
- 24:43Speaker 5: The outside because Burrow will always attack the one-on-ones, and
- 24:47Speaker 5: you've got two really good Arguably the best receiver in
- 24:51Speaker 5: the game in Chase and another really good long ball
- 24:54Speaker 5: receiver in Higgins with his size and his movement. But
- 24:57Speaker 5: the majority of those long plays come outside the numbers
- 25:00Speaker 5: on either fade balls or go routes. So now if
- 25:03Speaker 5: you go play action, you can tend to work the
- 25:06Speaker 5: middle of the field more, so it makes your pass.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Game more expansive.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Back in June, Joe Burrow said he had similar feelings
- 25:14Speaker 1: about this team as he felt about LSU going into
- 25:17Speaker 1: the 2019 season. We know how that turned out. They
- 25:20Speaker 1: averaged 48 points a game. They were pretty good. When
- 25:23Speaker 1: you heard that, did you chuckle or did that force
- 25:27Speaker 1: you to take notice that Joe Burrow thinks he might
- 25:29Speaker 1: have a special team this year in Cincinnati?
- 25:32Speaker 5: Well, look, like I said, I watch the tape a lot.
- 25:35Speaker 5: We know what Burrow is. We don't need to spend
- 25:37Speaker 5: a lot of time on him when he's healthy, and
- 25:39Speaker 5: I didn't. rewatch his, I guess it was his final
- 25:42Speaker 5: six games. When he came back, it was the final
- 25:44Speaker 5: six games of the season. So I watched every one
- 25:46Speaker 5: of his dropbacks in those games. You know, there's no
- 25:50Speaker 5: issue with borrow. And by the way, he was outstanding
- 25:52Speaker 5: on third down in this final six games.
- 25:54Speaker 4: And obviously third down is the money down.
- 25:57Speaker 5: But one thing I was really looking for in those games,
- 26:00Speaker 5: because obviously it's been an.
- 26:01Speaker 4: Issue over the years is the old line.
- 26:05Speaker 5: And to be quite frank, to be honest with you, I, I,
- 26:08Speaker 5: I thought it got better. I thought Mims really improved
- 26:11Speaker 5: as the year progressed. I thought that he was good
- 26:13Speaker 5: in pass protection. I mean, you're talking about a big
- 26:16Speaker 5: man that has really good balance, body control.
- 26:18Speaker 4: He's got light feet for a size.
- 26:21Speaker 5: Um, you know, I thought he did a really, really
- 26:23Speaker 5: good job in pass pro down the stretch. So I
- 26:26Speaker 5: think the old line was, you know, clearly improving. Um,
- 26:30Speaker 5: And I think, isn't it the same old line as
- 26:32Speaker 5: a year ago? They start this year.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Yeah, all five starters are back. The only person they
- 26:37Speaker 1: had to re-sign was Dalton Reisner. And once he moved
- 26:40Speaker 1: into the starting lineup with seven games to go, that
- 26:43Speaker 1: group played well.
- 26:45Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I mean, that's what I said. I watched
- 26:47Speaker 5: Chase Brown. I watched Burroughs, all of his dropbacks in
- 26:49Speaker 5: the last six games. And I didn't come away from
- 26:51Speaker 5: that feeling that the old line was a problem. you know,
- 26:55Speaker 5: I thought it was, it was more than serviceable. And,
- 26:57Speaker 5: you know, saying that Cincinnati over what's been the case is,
- 27:00Speaker 5: is probably saying it was great, you know, but, uh,
- 27:03Speaker 5: you know, so I think that, um, you know, it
- 27:06Speaker 5: has a chance.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Look, they got the veteran Brown and left tackle.
- 27:09Speaker 5: I think Mims has a chance to be one of
- 27:10Speaker 5: the best five or six right tackles in the game,
- 27:13Speaker 5: you know, maybe even better depending on his development, um,
- 27:16Speaker 5: you know, his commitment to being a great player because
- 27:19Speaker 5: the traits are clearly there. Um, So, you know, I
- 27:22Speaker 5: would expect this offense to be really, really good. You know, look,
- 27:26Speaker 5: we know what's happened in the past with games where
- 27:29Speaker 5: they've scored 33, 35, and they've lost. You know, I mean,
- 27:32Speaker 5: the killer game last year, you know, of course, was
- 27:35Speaker 5: that Bears game where they go ahead and then, you know,
- 27:37Speaker 5: Loveland scores the touchdown with.
- 27:39Speaker 4: What, you know, 20 seconds to go. You know, in
- 27:41Speaker 4: a play that just can't happen. That's the kind of
- 27:43Speaker 4: play that just can't happen in the NFL.
- 27:45Speaker 5: But, I mean, this offense, even with an O-line at
- 27:48Speaker 5: times being an issue in recent seasons, when Burrow's been.
- 27:50Speaker 4: Healthy, They score points.
- 27:52Speaker 1: A couple more questions from my friend Greg Cosell. You've
- 27:56Speaker 1: mentioned Amarius Mims and Chase Brown, two young players who
- 27:59Speaker 1: are ascending in Cincinnati. Let me ask you about two more,
- 28:03Speaker 1: DJ Turner and Dax Hill.
- 28:05Speaker 5: I thought Turner was getting better and better. Look, we
- 28:09Speaker 5: know he can run. The biggest question when he came
- 28:12Speaker 5: out to me was just the size because he's a
- 28:15Speaker 5: slight guy.
- 28:16Speaker 4: He's not short.
- 28:16Speaker 5: It's not like he's 5'9, but he's just slight, the
- 28:19Speaker 5: body type.
- 28:20Speaker 4: But I think he's gotten better and better.
- 28:23Speaker 5: I think he's a solid outside corner, and that's where
- 28:26Speaker 5: they'll keep him, you know, because obviously they've been moving
- 28:28Speaker 5: corners around. You know, they had Taylor Britt, who's not
- 28:31Speaker 5: there anymore. I think they were uncertain about Newton, what he,
- 28:34Speaker 5: you know, what he was. And obviously he's now sort
- 28:37Speaker 5: of out of the mix, even when they go nickel.
- 28:40Speaker 4: But Dax Hill, you know, you and I talked about
- 28:43Speaker 4: this a number of times over the years.
- 28:44Speaker 5: I remember doing him in detail at Michigan because he
- 28:47Speaker 5: was considered a really good prospect, as he was. And
- 28:50Speaker 5: in Michigan, and I actually think Mike McDonald was there
- 28:53Speaker 5: for one of those years that he was in Michigan.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Because I remember he had a great sack on a blitz.
- 28:57Speaker 4: That was an NFL blitz.
- 28:59Speaker 5: And I remember looking up to see, oh, Mike McDonald's
- 29:01Speaker 5: the defensive coordinator.
- 29:03Speaker 8: But he played safety in Michigan's base and nickel when
- 29:07Speaker 8: they went nickel. And in watching his tape, and I
- 29:10Speaker 8: made this in my notes, I said, I thought with
- 29:12Speaker 8: his size and his movement that it would not surprise
- 29:15Speaker 8: me if someone saw him as an outside corner. And
- 29:18Speaker 8: obviously it took a couple of years, but Cincinnati made
- 29:21Speaker 8: the move officially kind of last year.
- 29:24Speaker 5: And I think he's really good. I think he has
- 29:26Speaker 5: a chance to be a really, really good corner. And,
- 29:30Speaker 5: you know, they'll keep him there now. That'll be his position.
- 29:33Speaker 5: And I think he can essentially do anything you ask
- 29:35Speaker 5: of an outside corner. I think he can play press.
- 29:38Speaker 5: I think he can play off.
- 29:39Speaker 4: He can run. He's long. He's athletic. He's physical.
- 29:42Speaker 5: I mean, you know, again, you're dealing with a Bengals
- 29:44Speaker 5: defense that's not been very good over the years.
- 29:46Speaker 4: So people don't think about their players very often. But
- 29:49Speaker 4: I think he has a chance to be a really
- 29:50Speaker 4: good corner.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Greg, the Bengals open against Tampa Bay. The Bucs started
- 29:55Speaker 1: last year 6-2. They won on the road in Seattle,
- 29:58Speaker 1: and then they limped to the finish line and finished 8-9.
- 30:01Speaker 1: What do you think of Tampa Bay going into this season,
- 30:04Speaker 1: and in what ways are they dangerous?
- 30:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think that, you know, obviously Baker,
- 30:10Speaker 5: I've always been.
- 30:10Speaker 4: A Baker fan as a player.
- 30:12Speaker 5: You know, I don't worry about the other stuff, and
- 30:13Speaker 5: I think it's been clear from, you know, a lot
- 30:15Speaker 5: of people saw our quarterback show on on Netflix, you know,
- 30:20Speaker 5: that we did here at Films.
- 30:21Speaker 4: I mean, he's clearly a mature person.
- 30:23Speaker 5: You know, when he came in the league, you know,
- 30:25Speaker 5: there are a lot of people that worried about that,
- 30:27Speaker 5: but he's clearly mature. You know, when he's healthy, I mean, he,
- 30:30Speaker 5: I think he's a really good quarterback. He's a really
- 30:32Speaker 5: good thrower of the football. I don't think people realize
- 30:35Speaker 5: how good a thrower of the football he is. You
- 30:37Speaker 5: talk to other quarterbacks in the league and they bring
- 30:40Speaker 5: him up without even you mentioning him as about guys
- 30:42Speaker 5: who are really high level throwers. Um, For some reason
- 30:47Speaker 5: last year, I don't know if it was due to injury.
- 30:49Speaker 5: I know Wirfs missed some time in the left tackle.
- 30:51Speaker 4: It was a really good left tackle.
- 30:53Speaker 5: But the O-line was not as good a year ago
- 30:56Speaker 5: as it had been. And Baker was under a lot
- 30:58Speaker 5: of duress. A lot of people talked about his yards scrambling.
- 31:03Speaker 5: He doesn't want to play like that. That became a necessity, not, oh,
- 31:07Speaker 5: let me run around. That's not the way he wants.
- 31:10Speaker 5: Just like Burrow. Burrow doesn't want to run around. He
- 31:13Speaker 5: doesn't want to play like that. So I would assume
- 31:15Speaker 5: the O-line He'll be better. It'll be interesting to see
- 31:19Speaker 5: the running back situation because I like Bucky Irving, but
- 31:22Speaker 5: he's under 200 pounds. And I know they picked up Gainwell.
- 31:25Speaker 5: Kenny Gainwell was a really good football player, by the way.
- 31:28Speaker 5: But I'm curious to see what the division of labor is,
- 31:32Speaker 5: because I really like Irving. I don't think he's a
- 31:35Speaker 5: 280 carry guy. You know, I don't think you can
- 31:38Speaker 5: ask him to do that. I think, you know, he's
- 31:41Speaker 5: one of those 200 carry guys. And I think he
- 31:43Speaker 5: could be really, really good. So I'm curious to see there. Defensively,
- 31:49Speaker 5: they're always a tough defense to play against because of
- 31:51Speaker 5: Todd Bowles. You never know how he sees an opponent,
- 31:55Speaker 5: but his blitz packages are really difficult to figure out.
- 32:00Speaker 5: So we'll see. Burrow is the kind of guy, though,
- 32:03Speaker 5: that he's so... Look, the game for the quarterback has changed.
- 32:09Speaker 5: It used to be guys could be great pre-snap with
- 32:13Speaker 5: and therefore they could control the game. But now what's
- 32:17Speaker 5: happened a lot is there's so much post-snap coverage movement
- 32:21Speaker 5: by defenses that it's become even more of a post-snap
- 32:25Speaker 5: game for quarterbacks than a pre-snap game. You know, we
- 32:28Speaker 5: used to watch the Bradys, the Brees, the Mannings.
- 32:30Speaker 4: They controlled the game before the snap of the ball.
- 32:34Speaker 5: And I actually think Burrow is fantastic pre-snap. He's one
- 32:37Speaker 5: of sort of a dying breed. Aaron Rodgers is probably
- 32:40Speaker 5: the true last of the dying breed guys that are
- 32:42Speaker 5: just dominant pre-snap players. But now there's so much coverage
- 32:46Speaker 5: rotation post-snap that, you know, and it's a game of milliseconds.
- 32:51Speaker 5: So you've got to be able to see that instantly,
- 32:53Speaker 5: which a guy like Burrow can. So it'll be interesting
- 32:57Speaker 5: to see, you know, how that plays out because Todd
- 32:59Speaker 5: Bowles does a lot defensively. It's not, you know, it's
- 33:03Speaker 5: like playing Brian Flores, you know, it's that kind of stuff.
- 33:05Speaker 5: There's just so much going on. It's a difficult assignment.
- 33:10Speaker 1: I could do this for another hour, but you will
- 33:12Speaker 1: never say yes again if I do. So I'm going
- 33:15Speaker 1: to let you go. Greg, this has been a treat.
- 33:18Speaker 1: It's a great way for us to begin this segment
- 33:20Speaker 1: for the 2026 season. Thank you for your time and
- 33:23Speaker 1: your expertise, and I look forward to doing it again
- 33:25Speaker 1: down the road.
- 33:26Speaker 5: Thanks, Dan.
- 33:26Speaker 4: Always appreciate it. Love talking with you.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Finally, it's time for this week's Know the Foe segment
- 33:32Speaker 1: as we get the lowdown on the Buccaneers from Jenna Lane,
- 33:36Speaker 1: who covers the team for ESPN. She joined Wayne Box
- 33:39Speaker 1: Miller and me on the Bengals game plan show this week. Jen,
- 33:44Speaker 1: I'm interested in going back just first to last year
- 33:47Speaker 1: because the Bucs got off to a tremendous start. They
- 33:50Speaker 1: were 6-2. They had a road win at Seattle. And
- 33:54Speaker 1: then after the bye, they really struggled and finished a
- 33:56Speaker 1: game below.
- 33:57Speaker 5: 500.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Tell us all what happened last year.
- 34:01Speaker 7: A lot of things did, but it's really interesting because
- 34:04Speaker 7: on paper, things should have gotten better for them considering
- 34:08Speaker 7: that they got off to that 6-2 start with a
- 34:10Speaker 7: lot of injuries. And we're talking, you know, Mike Evans
- 34:14Speaker 7: being injured, Chris Godwin starting the season off with an injury,
- 34:17Speaker 7: Tristan Wirfs not beginning the season. Out there playing because
- 34:21Speaker 7: he had a hamstring injury. I'm sorry, a knee injury,
- 34:23Speaker 7: a hamstring injury he was dealing with this year. And
- 34:26Speaker 7: then on top of that, in week two, he lost,
- 34:29Speaker 7: you know, two members of his starting offensive line as well.
- 34:33Speaker 7: But they're able to pull out these wins. And then
- 34:35Speaker 7: you would think. The stars were the line for them
- 34:39Speaker 7: towards the end of the season. You know, worse could
- 34:41Speaker 7: could come back and get healthy. And then, of course,
- 34:45Speaker 7: Mike Evans, Jalen McMillan, McMillan suffered a horrific neck injury,
- 34:48Speaker 7: fractured three vertebrae at the beginning of the season, actually
- 34:52Speaker 7: before the season and preseason. It was their preseason game
- 34:55Speaker 7: at Pittsburgh. It's remarkable that he's made it back. And
- 34:58Speaker 7: then Mike Evans with his broken collarbone. And so you
- 35:01Speaker 7: would think that things were coming together for them at
- 35:05Speaker 7: the end of the season. And we've been very accustomed
- 35:08Speaker 7: to them having like these really hot starts, mid-season slumps,
- 35:12Speaker 7: and then they're able to, you know, just make a
- 35:15Speaker 7: dash for the finish line. And they've also benefited from
- 35:18Speaker 7: a weaker NFC South division that's helped them down the stretch.
- 35:22Speaker 7: But that wasn't the case this past year. And I
- 35:24Speaker 7: know a lot of fans were really disappointed with what
- 35:27Speaker 7: they saw last They've tried to make some corrections, though,
- 35:29Speaker 7: that can hopefully help them. But that's been one of
- 35:31Speaker 7: their biggest kind of question marks is why do they
- 35:34Speaker 7: have these midseason slumps? that they just seem to struggle with.
- 35:38Speaker 7: And why was it this past year that they couldn't
- 35:40Speaker 7: climb out of it? And I think it was just
- 35:42Speaker 7: a combination of so many things, so many injuries. I
- 35:46Speaker 7: didn't even mention Bucky Irving, how many games that they
- 35:48Speaker 7: were without him. And then they had a first-time offensive coordinator,
- 35:52Speaker 7: which in previous years, that wasn't as much of an issue.
- 35:55Speaker 7: But I just think in combination with all those injuries,
- 35:57Speaker 7: I think it was just really hard for them to
- 35:59Speaker 7: get all those pieces to gel. And then on the
- 36:01Speaker 7: defensive side of the ball, you don't have enough depth.
- 36:05Speaker 7: you're going to give up plays like a fourth and
- 36:08Speaker 7: 28 against the Falcons. You're going to give up a
- 36:10Speaker 7: two-touchdown lead against the Falcons on Thursday night, and those
- 36:13Speaker 7: kinds of games will cost you.
- 36:16Speaker 6: You know, Jen, I was thinking about you hate to
- 36:18Speaker 6: see what happened to Mike Evans, but in the same breath,
- 36:23Speaker 6: now that he's gone, Emeka Ibuka was Baker's guy, and
- 36:27Speaker 6: so you go into this next season with the comfort
- 36:30Speaker 6: level there that had Mike played a full season and
- 36:33Speaker 6: been his go-to guy, you would have had to adjust
- 36:35Speaker 6: to a new number one. So in some ways, I
- 36:37Speaker 6: think that helped Baker and his offense. Do you feel
- 36:40Speaker 6: the way?
- 36:43Speaker 7: Yeah, I think the fact that, and Emeka's talked about this,
- 36:48Speaker 7: the fact that he was thrown into the fire last year,
- 36:50Speaker 7: what's really interesting, though, is that, you know, he's not
- 36:53Speaker 7: a true ex. And the position that he was practicing
- 36:57Speaker 7: a lot throughout camp was often times, you know, the
- 37:00Speaker 7: Z and the F and, and, you know, he was
- 37:03Speaker 7: doing a lot of, of the types of things you'd
- 37:05Speaker 7: want from like a Chris Godwin. And then all of
- 37:07Speaker 7: a sudden when the season rolls around, he's suddenly having
- 37:09Speaker 7: to fill in for Mike. He never could really get
- 37:11Speaker 7: settled into one position. And that was something that Zach Robinson,
- 37:14Speaker 7: their offensive coordinator who came over from the Falcon, um,
- 37:18Speaker 7: that was something that he was really excited about just
- 37:20Speaker 7: getting him to kind of settle in on one position.
- 37:24Speaker 7: And some guys have said, they think that maybe a
- 37:25Speaker 7: Bucco was stretched a little thin last year and that
- 37:27Speaker 7: he was forced to do a lot of that. And that,
- 37:29Speaker 7: you know, maybe they took advantage a little bit of
- 37:31Speaker 7: the fact that he is such a smart guy and
- 37:34Speaker 7: it's like, okay, yes. Can he do this? Yes. Is
- 37:36Speaker 7: it in his best interest as far as developing him along?
- 37:39Speaker 7: Maybe no, but they had to do it out of necessity.
- 37:42Speaker 7: But now, um, they have a bunch of guys that
- 37:45Speaker 7: can all kind of play similar roles and, you know,
- 37:48Speaker 7: that Z, that F position. And I think that kind of,
- 37:50Speaker 7: that'll allow them to kind of spread the ball around,
- 37:53Speaker 7: whether it's to a Mecca. And I think what he does,
- 37:56Speaker 7: he really doesn't get enough credit for what he does
- 37:57Speaker 7: with his yak. You've got a really healthy Chris Godwin
- 38:00Speaker 7: who had a great training camp. You've got McMillan, who
- 38:03Speaker 7: I mentioned. And then they've also got Ted Hurst and
- 38:07Speaker 7: Tez Johnson. Tez Johnson, he had five touchdowns last year,
- 38:10Speaker 7: was not expected to get a lot of opportunity last year,
- 38:12Speaker 7: but he did out of necessity. And he told me
- 38:15Speaker 7: last week when I talked to him just how much
- 38:17Speaker 7: more prepared he feels this year for that moment and
- 38:20Speaker 7: how much he grew from being thrown into the fire.
- 38:24Speaker 1: We are visiting with Jenna Lane, who covers Tampa Bay
- 38:26Speaker 1: Buccaneers for ESPN. Let's talk about Baker Mayfield's Contract extension.
- 38:31Speaker 1: They got a deal done for three years yesterday, $ 55
- 38:34Speaker 1: million a year. I think we all know or at
- 38:37Speaker 1: least perceive that Baker Mayfield thrives on feeling disrespected. So
- 38:43Speaker 1: I don't think that it was necessarily going to be
- 38:46Speaker 1: a problem for him if it didn't get done. But
- 38:48Speaker 1: I wonder about the other guys on the team. There
- 38:52Speaker 1: would have been questions about it all year. It sounds
- 38:55Speaker 1: like he's very popular with his teammates today. Maybe they
- 38:58Speaker 1: would have felt that he deserved to have a deal done.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Am I on to something there?
- 39:05Speaker 7: All the guys are really happy for him. I mean,
- 39:07Speaker 7: there were a lot of jokes in the locker room today.
- 39:09Speaker 7: The offensive lineman wanted to know what are going to
- 39:11Speaker 7: be the Christmas gifts this year. I know Dylan McMillan
- 39:13Speaker 7: was like, I need to borrow some money. Like, I wonder,
- 39:16Speaker 7: and I'm like, don't look at me. I'm going to
- 39:18Speaker 7: ask Baker. We got a joke. We joked about that. But,
- 39:23Speaker 7: you know, and it's not just him, of course. Vita Bea,
- 39:25Speaker 7: who is a guy that a lot of opposing offenses, they,
- 39:29Speaker 7: he's a guy that they have circled because he's just
- 39:31Speaker 7: such a pain to deal with. And he's just so
- 39:33Speaker 7: big and he can move really well for a big guy.
- 39:35Speaker 7: And he's a key reason why, you know, Aaron Rogers
- 39:39Speaker 7: had some difficult moments in that NFC championship game. And,
- 39:42Speaker 7: and also Patrick Mahomes in the super bowl, stepping, stepping
- 39:45Speaker 7: up into that pocket and being able to make his throws.
- 39:48Speaker 7: He was just collapsing that interior, that pocket. When you
- 39:51Speaker 7: have two guys, it's so rare for this organization to
- 39:54Speaker 7: have players that make their grievances public. And so when
- 39:58Speaker 7: you have two guys that are doing that, you really wonder,
- 40:00Speaker 7: is team morale going downhill? I think they did a
- 40:03Speaker 7: good job. And I give a lot of credit to
- 40:05Speaker 7: Baker for showing the leadership. Like when they assembled everybody,
- 40:09Speaker 7: when they got together for camp, he assembled everybody and
- 40:11Speaker 7: he just said, hey guys, look, my contract situation is
- 40:14Speaker 7: what it is, but I'm all about ball right now.
- 40:16Speaker 7: And I promise you, I'm going to give it everything
- 40:17Speaker 7: I have. And every player that I talked to about
- 40:21Speaker 7: that just said, like, they knew all those things. You know,
- 40:24Speaker 7: I think Baker even said he did a lot of
- 40:27Speaker 7: that more so for some of the guys that maybe
- 40:29Speaker 7: didn't know him because they did bring in a lot
- 40:30Speaker 7: of new pieces. But just that that really reaffirmed their
- 40:33Speaker 7: belief in him and, you know, that they knew that
- 40:36Speaker 7: he was going to give it his all. And I
- 40:38Speaker 7: think it goes a long way as far as morale when...
- 40:41Speaker 7: you know, you, you can take care of your guys
- 40:44Speaker 7: and it may not go the way you want to, um,
- 40:47Speaker 7: from the jump. I mean, I saw it with Mike Evans.
- 40:49Speaker 7: He had a contract dispute, which was really kind of
- 40:51Speaker 7: the first one of those I can recall in recent memory.
- 40:55Speaker 7: you know, when they were ultimately able to get a
- 40:57Speaker 7: deal done with Evans after that. And of course he
- 40:59Speaker 7: did go on to the 49ers, but, but after that
- 41:01Speaker 7: dispute in 2023, they were able to come together on
- 41:05Speaker 7: a two-year deal after that. So I think they see
- 41:09Speaker 7: that maybe these things don't always work out from the jump,
- 41:12Speaker 7: but if you can just be patient and you stay
- 41:14Speaker 7: committed to the team and most of all, like to
- 41:16Speaker 7: each other and, good things can happen. So I know
- 41:18Speaker 7: they were all really thrilled for Baker today. They were
- 41:21Speaker 7: really supportive of him. And I think this is going
- 41:23Speaker 7: to go a long way for team morale.
- 41:27Speaker 6: You know, talk about Diaby. Quarterback pressures last year, 32
- 41:32Speaker 6: really gets back to the quarterback. Todd Bowles' defense typically
- 41:36Speaker 6: is tough against the run, but against the pass, not
- 41:40Speaker 6: so good. Do you see that improving this year, or
- 41:43Speaker 6: is that still going to be a challenge that they're
- 41:45Speaker 6: going to have to rise to?
- 41:48Speaker 7: Well, I know you're watching them really closely. If you
- 41:50Speaker 7: bring up the obvious name, because he's a guy that
- 41:51Speaker 7: doesn't get a lot of credit because he doesn't get
- 41:53Speaker 7: those sacks, but he does get a lot of consistent pressure.
- 41:56Speaker 7: And they're really excited about the fact that they have
- 41:58Speaker 7: a guy on the opposite side of him, Ruben Bain Jr.
- 42:01Speaker 7: And that they can really kind of play off each other.
- 42:03Speaker 7: And obviously Bain was really highly touted coming out of Miami.
- 42:06Speaker 7: And they think the combination of those guys, um, also
- 42:10Speaker 7: to bringing in a Sean Robinson up the middle, you know,
- 42:13Speaker 7: they really wanted to get stronger and more physical, um,
- 42:18Speaker 7: they know that they weren't able to kind of get those.
- 42:22Speaker 7: That's the thing, like in those games, like the Falcons game,
- 42:24Speaker 7: you know, you don't get those fourth quarter sacks. You
- 42:26Speaker 7: don't pressure the quarterback, you know, and especially in a
- 42:28Speaker 7: system like Bowles' where it's a high risk, high reward.
- 42:31Speaker 7: If you're taking those risks with those blitzes and you're
- 42:34Speaker 7: not getting home, well, that's when those balls go sailing
- 42:37Speaker 7: over players' heads and that's when you give up those
- 42:40Speaker 7: big plays. So they're just really hoping that, you know,
- 42:43Speaker 7: they can help Diaby out. You know, they're hoping a
- 42:45Speaker 7: healthy Kalijah can't see up the middle. you know, paired
- 42:48Speaker 7: with Vita Veya can really kind of make that engine go,
- 42:52Speaker 7: you know, not just the hobby, but they're just really
- 42:54Speaker 7: excited about the depth that they have at edge rusher.
- 42:56Speaker 7: Todd Bowles feels like this is around, you know, like
- 42:59Speaker 7: they haven't had this kind of depth along their defensive
- 43:02Speaker 7: line since maybe the Super Bowl and especially at edge rusher.
- 43:05Speaker 7: They have some rotational guys that really don't get mentioned either.
- 43:08Speaker 7: David Walker had a tremendous training camp. He was a
- 43:10Speaker 7: fourth round pick two years ago. We didn't see him
- 43:12Speaker 7: last year because he tore his ACL like at the
- 43:14Speaker 7: very beginning of training camp. He had a series of practices,
- 43:19Speaker 7: nine straight practices where he had at least one would-be sack.
- 43:22Speaker 7: That was really impressive. So I think he's a guy
- 43:25Speaker 7: that you put him in certain spots, I think he
- 43:27Speaker 7: can really get after it. They signed Al-Qadi Mohammed as
- 43:30Speaker 7: well in free agency. He had 11 sacks for the
- 43:32Speaker 7: Lions last year, and he's not even listed as a starter.
- 43:36Speaker 7: So they've really tried to get better in that department.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it sounds like they succeeded. That is an impressive
- 43:42Speaker 1: list of pass rushers. What is considered to be the
- 43:47Speaker 1: biggest question mark for the Bucs going into the season?
- 43:51Speaker 7: Well, I mentioned those big plays that were given up,
- 43:53Speaker 7: and I think it's fair to say that that could
- 43:56Speaker 7: be a concern again this year because of the fact
- 43:59Speaker 7: that you look at this receiving core that they have. And,
- 44:04Speaker 7: you know, I think that's been a concern of mine, honestly,
- 44:07Speaker 7: with this team for a few years now, whether or
- 44:10Speaker 7: not it's not just the receivers or it's not just
- 44:12Speaker 7: the cornerbacks that they have, but also... You know, it's
- 44:15Speaker 7: the depth there. You know, they, as of right now, like,
- 44:20Speaker 7: they've got Zion McCollum, who, you know, he's a good,
- 44:24Speaker 7: good player, but he's also had some inconsistent moments. He's
- 44:27Speaker 7: a sixth-round draft pick, but he's been a starter for
- 44:29Speaker 7: a few years now, and he's been a bit streaky.
- 44:32Speaker 7: He has some moments where he's really good, and then
- 44:34Speaker 7: he has other instances in games where he has lacked
- 44:37Speaker 7: eye discipline. And I know he's worked really hard to
- 44:40Speaker 7: kind of overcome some of those issues in camp, I
- 44:43Speaker 7: want to say he had the first interception and like that,
- 44:46Speaker 7: I think that really set the tone for this is
- 44:48Speaker 7: as much different defense. Um, and then Benjamin Morrison is
- 44:52Speaker 7: a guy that they, they draft them the second round,
- 44:54Speaker 7: but he's not slated to start right now. It's actually
- 44:56Speaker 7: a guy that was drafted behind him, Jacob Parrish, who
- 44:58Speaker 7: is an undersized corner at a, uh, um, K-State, and
- 45:03Speaker 7: he's a good player, but he is undersized. He tends
- 45:07Speaker 7: to make up for his physical shortcomings with just his
- 45:09Speaker 7: sheer athleticism, but those are two guys on the outside
- 45:12Speaker 7: that I expect them to get tested. They often are.
- 45:17Speaker 7: I think Morrison is probably going to step in on
- 45:19Speaker 7: the outside, and then Parrish goes in on the inside,
- 45:21Speaker 7: and I think anytime you have that as well, sometimes
- 45:23Speaker 7: you can run into some some challenges when you've got
- 45:26Speaker 7: moving pieces. So, you know, it's going to be really
- 45:29Speaker 7: interesting to see, you know, with their secondary and against
- 45:34Speaker 7: these receivers.
- 45:36Speaker 6: You know, Chase McLaughlin, your kicker, a big foot, but
- 45:41Speaker 6: he's in the final year, I guess, a deal and
- 45:45Speaker 6: a three-year deal. But, man, 65 yarder. I mean, we've
- 45:48Speaker 6: got a guy with a big gun for a foot.
- 45:50Speaker 6: Talk about your expectations of him and special teams this year.
- 45:55Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, well, in special teams, I mean, he's
- 45:57Speaker 7: one of those consistent guys that you can always really
- 46:00Speaker 7: count on. And I just give him a lot of
- 46:02Speaker 7: credit because even if he has a day where for
- 46:04Speaker 7: some reason he makes an off kick, I think his
- 46:06Speaker 7: just ability to kind of snap and clear and come
- 46:08Speaker 7: back from it. Like, he's probably one of the mentally
- 46:11Speaker 7: toughest kickers I've come across. I think he's just got
- 46:13Speaker 7: a very even-keeled personality. And so that when you trot
- 46:17Speaker 7: him out on the field in those pressure-packed moments, he's
- 46:19Speaker 7: just able– to deliver. I think he's done a great job.
- 46:23Speaker 7: I think his ability from 50 plus yards, I think is,
- 46:26Speaker 7: is really quite impressive. On the flip side of that though,
- 46:29Speaker 7: the rest of their special teams, you know, they had
- 46:31Speaker 7: to make a lot of changes this year. You know,
- 46:33Speaker 7: that's why they brought in Danny Smith from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 46:35Speaker 7: They feel very fortunate that they were able to get
- 46:37Speaker 7: him from that Mike Tomlin coaching staff, because they just
- 46:40Speaker 7: really struggled with their coverage units last year. So they're,
- 46:44Speaker 7: they're hoping for some improvement there. You know, that's also
- 46:47Speaker 7: why they went out and they prioritize the signing of
- 46:50Speaker 7: a guy who made it to the Pro Bowl for
- 46:53Speaker 7: special teams in Miles Killebrew. So they've done a lot
- 46:56Speaker 7: of overhauling in that department.
