- 1:42Speaker 1: as the beautiful blonde that starred on the show Scrubs
- 1:46Speaker 1: for many years. Go ahead, Donald, do you do the intro?

- 2:05Speaker 2: It'll sound like you walked into a stadium.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Yeah, Dan, can you add thunderous applause? Thank you? All right,
- 2:11Speaker 1: here's Sarah Chalk Hi, Sarah.
- 2:13Speaker 5: I didn't know whether to talk because I didn't hear
- 2:15Speaker 5: the thunder supplies. I thought maybe I was just getting
- 2:17Speaker 5: a glitch in these fancy headphones. Can I see you guys? Like,
- 2:22Speaker 5: right now, I'm staring at the garage band screen? Can
- 2:24Speaker 5: I make it small so I can see you? Guys?
- 2:25Speaker 2: All you got to do is click back on zoom.
- 2:28Speaker 5: So, so Dan, can I make Can I hit the
- 2:30Speaker 5: yellow button and make garage bands small?
- 2:32Speaker 2: I'm just gonna put it out there. You ruined our introduction.
- 2:35Speaker 1: No, guys, I don't want to edit it out. Dan, listen, no,
- 2:41Speaker 1: list I want now that Sarah's ruined the magic, I
- 2:44Speaker 1: want the fans to know that we've been on We've
- 2:46Speaker 1: been on zoom for a half hour. While Sarah was
- 2:48Speaker 1: getting technical support from edit. Sarah literally had a Sarah
- 2:53Speaker 1: had a technical intervention with our editor. She was like,
- 2:57Speaker 1: how do you start your laptop?
- 2:59Speaker 5: And yet I've still I felt I've never felt more
- 3:01Speaker 5: proud are you than I do in this moment, Because okay,
- 3:04Speaker 5: I just want to successfully Jean Michelle is gonna edit
- 3:06Speaker 5: this out. Just give me one second. I'm gonna hit
- 3:08Speaker 5: the yellow button in the corner, Dan and minimize garage
- 3:11Speaker 5: band so I can see Zach and Donald.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I do it. Just do it. You don't even have
- 3:15Speaker 1: to ask, I'm worried that Sarah's gonna call Dan for
- 3:17Speaker 1: other technical help in her life. She's gonna be like,
- 3:19Speaker 1: hey Dan, I'm wi FI signal.
- 3:26Speaker 5: I have dan zmail.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Special.
- 3:31Speaker 2: How are you, Sarah?
- 3:33Speaker 5: I'm good, guys. I miss you. I miss you, and
- 3:35Speaker 5: now seeing you on this zoom is making me miss
- 3:37Speaker 5: you more weird.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Where are you quarantining in Canada? I imagine, so I'm quarantining.
- 3:43Speaker 5: I'm quarantining Canada. My sister and I have decided to
- 3:46Speaker 5: quarantine our families together, so we have communally six children,
- 3:51Speaker 5: three dogs, and a cato.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Wow.
- 3:54Speaker 2: How are you doing school? How's school going?
- 3:56Speaker 5: School is interesting? School is basic. We have children between
- 4:01Speaker 5: the ages of three and sixteen, so we'd only have
- 4:05Speaker 5: so many screens and so much bandwidth to attend different
- 4:08Speaker 5: online classes. So we've been kind of doing some of
- 4:10Speaker 5: that and then some group classes. My sister is a lawyer,
- 4:14Speaker 5: so she's teaching law, so like really right things like,
- 4:17Speaker 5: you know, lessons on the Rights of the Child, the
- 4:20Speaker 5: United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Next
- 4:22Speaker 5: week's the Constitution, and I do equally important things like
- 4:25Speaker 5: give them cartoons sides and they audition for cartoons.
- 4:29Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 4:31Speaker 1: You could give them a scene from Rick and Morty
- 4:33Speaker 1: and you guys could all play parts.
- 4:35Speaker 5: We have actually we've done we've done some cartoons. We
- 4:39Speaker 5: haven't reached Rick and Morty yet because that's not appropriate
- 4:41Speaker 5: for the four year old, right and as it's sort
- 4:45Speaker 5: of you know, tight quarters, we haven't gotten there yet.
- 4:48Speaker 5: But yeah, it's it's pretty nuts. I mean, we're all
- 4:51Speaker 5: quarantined together. I'm the designated grocery shopper, probably because of
- 4:54Speaker 5: all my OCD tendencies. So I feel like that's the
- 4:59Speaker 5: most harrowing experience in in my life right now, which is, uh,
- 5:04Speaker 5: you know, I go to the grocery store. I have
- 5:06Speaker 5: my own you know, version of Ppe, which is like
- 5:09Speaker 5: rating the drama eight prop spin. So I have like
- 5:12Speaker 5: a tuk and sunglasses and I, you know, just put
- 5:15Speaker 5: my hoodie up and gloves.
- 5:18Speaker 1: On Canadians, is a hat, It's a hat.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yes, I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say, what is Sarah?
- 5:26Speaker 1: If you wouldn't mind translating your canadianisms as we go
- 5:30Speaker 1: through the podcast. There are some non Canadians.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Listening listen, Yes, the main the main ones really are
- 5:36Speaker 5: to Garbrator parcade and seawall?
- 5:40Speaker 2: What's a garbaret?
- 5:42Speaker 1: Oh? The garbage disposal, the.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Garbage disposal, got it?
- 5:44Speaker 5: Yeah, which happened to be the first thing that broke
- 5:47Speaker 5: when I went when I came to Los Angeles and
- 5:48Speaker 5: the landlord did not understand me.
- 5:50Speaker 1: At a park is a parkade a parking parking structure?
- 5:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Your Canadians doing very well. You've been studying.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I'm just guessing. I'm playing a game called guests the
- 6:00Speaker 1: Canadian expression. Are there any other.
- 6:03Speaker 5: Parcade? Seawall?
- 6:07Speaker 1: What's a seawall? The obvious? And then you have that
- 6:13Speaker 1: thing with the gravy and fries? What's that called? But
- 6:16Speaker 1: that's maybe the teine Okay, I know about poutine that.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Yeah, it's the gravy and the cheese curds on top
- 6:24Speaker 5: of the of the fries.
- 6:25Speaker 1: It's just fries, but they take great pride in it
- 6:28Speaker 1: in Canada.
- 6:30Speaker 5: How is your guys quarantine going?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Oh it's amazing.
- 6:34Speaker 1: That's sorry.
- 6:37Speaker 5: How much time do you spend Donald.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I'm gonna be honest with you.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Out in that closet, Donald tells his family that he's
- 6:44Speaker 1: recording the podcast. Donald's family thinks he records the podcast
- 6:48Speaker 1: every day. And he's in the closet. But meanwhile we do.
- 6:50Speaker 2: It like the week. Yeah. My wife keeps asking like, Yo,
- 6:53Speaker 2: how come when is the next episode coming out? You
- 6:55Speaker 2: record so many of them.
- 6:57Speaker 5: You're banking soon.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Things that Donald records like four podcasts a day in there.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Well, I definitely do a lot of press. I'll be like,
- 7:06Speaker 2: I'm doing so much press right now. You set up
- 7:09Speaker 2: you should.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Set up your your your PlayStation in there. Donald.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I just don't know how I get the TV in here.
- 7:13Speaker 2: That's the problem.
- 7:14Speaker 5: Dan dans d Dan danos he knows Dan could hook
- 7:18Speaker 5: it up. Down do it Dan really quickly. It says,
- 7:21Speaker 5: Zoom would like to record the computer screen. Grant access
- 7:25Speaker 5: to this application in security privacy preferences.
- 7:28Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no no, you don't want to record.
- 7:30Speaker 1: This, Sarah. Dan is outside, he's not He's not there
- 7:33Speaker 1: for your technical needs.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Okay, so let's get into it.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Let's get in the wait. Before we get into the episode, Sarah,
- 7:40Speaker 1: Donald and I have done this a few episodes now,
- 7:43Speaker 1: and now that we have you, we wanted to ask
- 7:46Speaker 1: you tell us about your casting process because, as I remember,
- 7:52Speaker 1: you were coming off of Roseam, you were doing that
- 7:55Speaker 1: particularly unique thing where you had replaced the Becky.
- 7:58Speaker 2: That was years before.
- 7:59Speaker 5: It wasn't, Yeah, it was. I was like seventeen eighteen,
- 8:02Speaker 5: nineteen twenty when that happened, so four years before.
- 8:05Speaker 2: And uh.
- 8:05Speaker 1: And by the way, I was thinking as well as
- 8:07Speaker 1: I was preparing for this, because Sarah, I do a
- 8:08Speaker 1: lot of research. I get really into this now. By
- 8:10Speaker 1: the way, I found for you Scrubs fans out there
- 8:12Speaker 1: and for us, I found a website called Scrubs Wiki
- 8:15Speaker 1: wiki where it has like everything you ever want to
- 8:18Speaker 1: know about Scrubs. Like I'm like, literally, whoever made that?
- 8:20Speaker 2: Well, it doesn't have everything. It doesn't have us, No.
- 8:23Speaker 1: It doesn't have us, but it has a lot of
- 8:24Speaker 1: It has a lot of insightful information.
- 8:26Speaker 2: And I feel like I feel like they should not
- 8:28Speaker 2: go to wiki Scrubs wiki.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Yeah, but it has like it literally has like these
- 8:32Speaker 1: are the fantasies in the episode. These are the girls
- 8:34Speaker 1: name JD was called. These are It's like all break
- 8:36Speaker 1: broken down. Someone put a lot of work into it. Donald,
- 8:38Speaker 1: give them a shout out.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Shout out to you for putting all that work in.
- 8:42Speaker 2: But we got it from here.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Oh my god, Donald's jealous, all right, listen, Donald, you guys,
- 8:48Speaker 1: before I was thinking about Sarah and I was saying,
- 8:50Speaker 1: is there another example other than Roseanne where they just
- 8:54Speaker 1: replaced the actress and had them play the same character.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And I was bewitched witched? And was he still? Was
- 9:01Speaker 1: he just a different Darren?
- 9:03Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 9:03Speaker 5: I think they just flipped him out, flipped him out.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Tell just briefly about that, because I thought it's a
- 9:08Speaker 1: very unique thing, and you've told me and Donald, and
- 9:10Speaker 1: I just wanted if you could just talk about what
- 9:12Speaker 1: that was like really quickly because I think it's so interesting.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Yeah. I mean, I was sixteen when I auditioned, and
- 9:19Speaker 5: it was Glenn Quinn, the guy who played my husband Mark.
- 9:23Speaker 5: The audition was with him, and he just made out
- 9:25Speaker 5: with seven girls. We were all dressed exactly the same
- 9:28Speaker 5: and matching pink shirts. On the whole scene was this
- 9:30Speaker 5: like makeout scene where he's like baby baby cam here,
- 9:32Speaker 5: and I'm like, get a job at the gas station,
- 9:33Speaker 5: Get a job at the gas station. It's like baby
- 9:35Speaker 5: baby cam here. And it was literally like every other
- 9:38Speaker 5: actress that was auditioning was like twenty two living in
- 9:40Speaker 5: Los Angeles. I flew in, they flew me in for
- 9:43Speaker 5: the night to go and read, and I just remember
- 9:47Speaker 5: I was sixteen, he was twenty four, and just thinking
- 9:49Speaker 5: he is so handsome. How am I going to remember
- 9:52Speaker 5: one line? And they said, we'll let you know in
- 9:56Speaker 5: a couple of days. And then they called back and
- 9:57Speaker 5: they were like, Okay, come back tomorrow and read with Roseanna.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Then I did. And then Tom Arnold called me at
- 10:03Speaker 5: home a few days later, and he was trying to
- 10:06Speaker 5: feel out whether I was going to leave the show
- 10:08Speaker 5: to go to college, because I was younger then and
- 10:11Speaker 5: still you know, at an age where I would do that.
- 10:13Speaker 5: And Sarah Gilbert at the time had left to go
- 10:15Speaker 5: to Gail and she was flying back to do episodes,
- 10:17Speaker 5: and Lacy had left to go to Vassar, and so
- 10:20Speaker 5: I knew right away that that's what he was asked.
- 10:23Speaker 5: I could tell that's what he was getting at.
- 10:24Speaker 1: So I was like, oh, you were probably not allowed
- 10:26Speaker 1: to do that, right, So he was sort of tiptoeing around, right.
- 10:29Speaker 5: Was.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Baby, why don't you call uch? What happened?
- 10:34Speaker 5: Probably yes? So then I said I was like, no, no, college, gross,
- 10:37Speaker 5: absolutely not. And I knew I would go to college,
- 10:39Speaker 5: but it was the ros Antel was a big opportunity
- 10:40Speaker 5: for me, and I knew that I would.
- 10:42Speaker 1: You knew you weren't going to lose the job over it,
- 10:43Speaker 1: so you were like college.
- 10:44Speaker 5: College bombit and I, I just did it on the side,
- 10:48Speaker 5: and so, uh so I got the job. But the
- 10:51Speaker 5: craziest part of the story that I actually I hadn't
- 10:53Speaker 5: remember when we were talking about recently, was they called
- 10:56Speaker 5: me and told me I had the job. And I
- 10:57Speaker 5: went to a party that night. So I'm to this
- 11:00Speaker 5: like little high school in Canada and I get this
- 11:05Speaker 5: phone call that I was going to replace Becky, and
- 11:06Speaker 5: I told a couple people and it spread around our
- 11:09Speaker 5: high school pretty fast. It sounded like a lie. I mean,
- 11:11Speaker 5: it doesn't like I'm going to replace Becky on the
- 11:13Speaker 5: Roseanne Show. The Roseann Show was the number one show
- 11:14Speaker 5: at the time. It sounded fake. And then I get
- 11:18Speaker 5: a call the following week and it was The Roseanne
- 11:21Speaker 5: Show saying we're getting cold feet about recasting Becky, so
- 11:25Speaker 5: we don't know if we're going to do it, so
- 11:26Speaker 5: we're going to hold you for four months. We're going
- 11:27Speaker 5: to give you ten grand to hold you. So, first
- 11:30Speaker 5: of all, I'd never heard of money like ten thousand dollars.
- 11:32Speaker 5: I thought to do nothing, like just to sit here
- 11:34Speaker 5: for four months while you make a decision. And then
- 11:37Speaker 5: the other half of me thought, like, my ass is
- 11:39Speaker 5: grass at high school, Like they're going to tell me
- 11:43Speaker 5: in four months if we're actually going to do this.
- 11:45Speaker 5: So I had to kind of wait.
- 11:46Speaker 1: You should have brought that money. So you should have
- 11:48Speaker 1: brought that money to school and just fanned it out.
- 11:51Speaker 2: You got me on hold live.
- 11:55Speaker 1: For those of you who don't know, this is called
- 11:56Speaker 1: a holding deal, right, this.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Is a holding feat They hold me excuse.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Me when I fanned my face with my holding view.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Totally and then uh, and then I know, and by
- 12:10Speaker 5: the time you converted to Canadian dollars, it was obviously
- 12:12Speaker 5: a whole different situation. So so yes, it was a
- 12:15Speaker 5: crazy It was a crazy experience. I was a baby,
- 12:18Speaker 5: and I had no idea what I was doing, and
- 12:20Speaker 5: I just watched like Roseanne and Lori Metcalf and Sandra
- 12:23Speaker 5: Bernhardt and Sarah Gilbert and John Goodman and Johnny Gilecki
- 12:27Speaker 5: and this like ridiculous list of comedians and it was
- 12:32Speaker 5: kind of in awe and a little bit terrified. And
- 12:36Speaker 5: then after two seasons, they you know, gave every ready
- 12:39Speaker 5: hugs by like I'll see you guys after hiatus, which
- 12:41Speaker 5: is the break that you take between seasons for anyone
- 12:44Speaker 5: listening to that weird term. And uh, then I get
- 12:47Speaker 5: a phone call saying Lisa's coming back to play Becky,
- 12:51Speaker 5: and apparently I said I want to talk to Roseanne
- 12:54Speaker 5: for closure. I don't remember doing that, but barely what
- 12:57Speaker 5: I said, and so I did. And then and then
- 13:02Speaker 5: they called me like six episodes into the following season
- 13:04Speaker 5: and said come back this week. Darlene's getting married in
- 13:08Speaker 5: an episode and can you come down and be Becky?
- 13:11Speaker 5: And I was like it went and he said tomorrow.
- 13:13Speaker 1: So Lasi had just Liasy had just changed her mind
- 13:15Speaker 1: and she left.
- 13:16Speaker 5: They didn't tell me, They just said can you come
- 13:18Speaker 5: back tomorrow? And I said, well, I'm going to college
- 13:21Speaker 5: up here now and I'm doing this movie of the
- 13:26Speaker 5: week where John Ritter, interestingly enough, who played obviously your
- 13:29Speaker 5: dad on Scrubs, I was doing a TV movie with
- 13:33Speaker 5: him up here, and I said, so I can come on.
- 13:35Speaker 5: I can come on Friday night for tape night. So
- 13:37Speaker 5: it was the craziest day. I remember. I wrote an
- 13:39Speaker 5: ocean offee exam at like six point thirty in the morning,
- 13:41Speaker 5: went straight into the scene with this pregnancy belly. I
- 13:43Speaker 5: just remember ripping the pregnancy belly off on the way
- 13:45Speaker 5: to the airport and got to LA and they had
- 13:49Speaker 5: a car waiting for me with hair and makeup in
- 13:51Speaker 5: the car. Oh. I did my hair and makeup on
- 13:53Speaker 5: the way to the live taping, and the taping had
- 13:55Speaker 5: already started and I hadn't seen anyone since I'd been fired,
- 13:58Speaker 5: and they were like, hold these flowers, say this, stand here,
- 14:01Speaker 5: do this. You got to you know the point where
- 14:03Speaker 5: Roseanna would take questions from the audience and somebody said,
- 14:06Speaker 5: why do you keep switching Becky's back and forth? And
- 14:07Speaker 5: she was like, well, it's going to be shocky from
- 14:09Speaker 5: now on. And that's how I found out I had
- 14:11Speaker 5: the job back for the last year and a half
- 14:13Speaker 5: of the show.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Wow. That's insane. Wow, I really think, Sarah, that is
- 14:16Speaker 1: a that is a story that I never heard of
- 14:19Speaker 1: another actor having. That is just if you if you're
- 14:22Speaker 1: I mean, when do you ever see or hear something
- 14:26Speaker 1: like that happening to an actor. That's just insane.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Well, we as we all know, Sarah has the craziest
- 14:30Speaker 2: luck in the history of like just everything happens to
- 14:34Speaker 2: say Sarah.
- 14:34Speaker 1: We touched on that a bit in an earlier episode.
- 14:36Speaker 1: How you would come in on Monday morning and you
- 14:39Speaker 1: would have a story that was like nothing else we
- 14:42Speaker 1: had ever heard, and it happened every week.
- 14:46Speaker 5: Honestly, I still feel like sometimes I need to call
- 14:48Speaker 5: you guys, because I'm like you, you would not believe
- 14:51Speaker 5: what just happened to me. Lately it's mostly at the
- 14:53Speaker 5: grocery store. I mostly want to call you after I
- 14:56Speaker 5: leave the grocery store and be like, take a deep
- 14:58Speaker 5: breath and be like Okay, so I get there, the
- 15:01Speaker 5: box bottomself and all the producce drops in the main
- 15:04Speaker 5: aisle where everybody's standing. That's a woman behind me costs
- 15:06Speaker 5: little but in front of me. I mean, that is
- 15:08Speaker 5: every day, right.
- 15:09Speaker 1: You just couldn't believe that every Monday morning. You would
- 15:11Speaker 1: be like, you are not gonna believe what happened to
- 15:14Speaker 1: me this weekend? And then and then we'd be like yeah, right,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and then it would she would go into a story
- 15:20Speaker 1: that was like that's the most insane thing I've ever heard.
- 15:23Speaker 1: That's just this weekend, right.
- 15:25Speaker 2: And also it would be so crazy that I'd be like,
- 15:26Speaker 2: there's no way she can make.
- 15:27Speaker 5: This shit up, No way she could make I mean,
- 15:31Speaker 5: it is incredible how similar I am with Elliott.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Okay, well, let's talk about the audition process.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Yeah, talk about That's a good segue into talk about
- 15:42Speaker 1: getting scrubs now, because what was what was the auditioning process?
- 15:45Speaker 1: When I read finally came around to getting callbacks? I
- 15:48Speaker 1: was I was reading with you, so you were were
- 15:50Speaker 1: you the first person cast?
- 15:52Speaker 5: Doll and I were cast together? My audition process, I
- 15:56Speaker 5: had just moved back, like after the Roseansche, I moved
- 15:59Speaker 5: back to Canada for four years, and then my best
- 16:02Speaker 5: friend had finished film school and she wanted to produce
- 16:05Speaker 5: and I wanted to act. And there's you know, there
- 16:08Speaker 5: was just at the time not as much filming in
- 16:10Speaker 5: Canada as does now, and I creatively was like, Okay,
- 16:14Speaker 5: I'll go back and give ella another try. We had
- 16:16Speaker 5: we got a six month sublet and we moved down.
- 16:19Speaker 5: We didn't know anyone, and we never had any plans.
- 16:22Speaker 5: And so this one night we had plans. We were
- 16:24Speaker 5: going to a show and I get this. I had
- 16:26Speaker 5: two auditions and my you know, for the next day,
- 16:29Speaker 5: and normally I'm so type A. I would have canceled
- 16:31Speaker 5: my plans and spent every second that existed between getting
- 16:34Speaker 5: the sides until going into the audition working on it.
- 16:38Speaker 5: And I was like, you know what, fuck it, I'm
- 16:39Speaker 5: not canceling. You know, on Gen, We're going to go
- 16:41Speaker 5: to the show. And I got home and was midnight,
- 16:45Speaker 5: and my audition was at nine am, and the other
- 16:47Speaker 5: audition was at noon. My Scrubs audition was at nine am.
- 16:51Speaker 5: And I opened the script and I started reading it,
- 16:53Speaker 5: and I swore every page. I was like, fuck, oh shit,
- 16:56Speaker 5: oh my god, this is so good, and every page
- 16:58Speaker 5: I was like, oh shit, this is like the thing
- 17:00Speaker 5: I've ever read. Oh fuck, I want this job so badly.
- 17:02Speaker 5: I want this part so bad. And so by twelve thirty,
- 17:05Speaker 5: I'm like sitting there with having read the script and
- 17:08Speaker 5: with these sides, and I loved the show. I loved
- 17:11Speaker 5: the writing. I love the part so much. So I thought, Okay,
- 17:14Speaker 5: I'll skip the other audition. I won't read that one.
- 17:16Speaker 5: Whatever that is goes in the garbage. And I read
- 17:19Speaker 5: with Debbie and Brett, the cash In directors, at nine
- 17:22Speaker 5: o'clock on a Friday morning, and they said, Okay, can
- 17:24Speaker 5: you come back at three to read with Bill.
- 17:27Speaker 1: That's a good sign.
- 17:29Speaker 5: And then one of Jen's and my very very good
- 17:33Speaker 5: friends husbands was in town for work and he had
- 17:37Speaker 5: come over to visit us, and so him and Jen,
- 17:41Speaker 5: Aaron Brindle and Jen read the sides with me, and
- 17:45Speaker 5: so we just kept like running them and then I
- 17:48Speaker 5: went in and auditioned with Bill at three. Auditions were
- 17:52Speaker 5: like ten days later because they were still casting other
- 17:54Speaker 5: people to go to studio and network. So then we
- 17:57Speaker 5: did studio and then network. So there's four auditions, and
- 18:00Speaker 5: I were the same thing.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Every too, see Sarah, because the last two auditions we
- 18:06Speaker 2: were there together. I remember that, and you wore the
- 18:08Speaker 2: same jeans with the big ass belt and it had
- 18:12Speaker 2: a big belt buckle.
- 18:14Speaker 5: Am I right, Okay, I know the belt you're talking about.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:18Speaker 5: I went through a very big belt buckle collecting faith.
- 18:21Speaker 5: So I had this old vintage leather belt and then
- 18:23Speaker 5: I would switch out like a like an old Coca
- 18:25Speaker 5: Cola belt buckle or like. So I did wear not
- 18:28Speaker 5: a lot, but in my memory, I don't know, we
- 18:30Speaker 5: could both. I have no idea which one of us
- 18:32Speaker 5: is right, But in my memory what I wore was
- 18:35Speaker 5: I wore black boots at the heel, black pants and
- 18:38Speaker 5: a tight black tank top because when I first moved
- 18:42Speaker 5: to LA and I would go on these auditions. I
- 18:44Speaker 5: remember I went out for an Aaron Spelling sharing these
- 18:46Speaker 5: like plaid funky bell bottoms that I thought all really
- 18:48Speaker 5: cool in this like vintage T shirt, and I thought
- 18:51Speaker 5: that I'm like super excited about the South. And I
- 18:53Speaker 5: walked in and there were ten girls and they were
- 18:56Speaker 5: all wearing tight black tank tops and tight black pants,
- 18:59Speaker 5: and I thought, Okay, so that's how you do it here,
- 19:02Speaker 5: got it.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I remember the genes being blue. I do remember them
- 19:06Speaker 2: being I thought they were tight as fuck too. I
- 19:08Speaker 2: remember being like, yeah, Jesus tight, I was the same gene.
- 19:13Speaker 1: I was the same way, not with the tight jeans,
- 19:15Speaker 1: but I the second I started getting callbacks, I was like,
- 19:18Speaker 1: I'm not washing this. I want my pheromones. I want
- 19:22Speaker 1: my pheromones on it. I'm not jinxing this thing. And
- 19:25Speaker 1: I would get like another callback and be like not
- 19:27Speaker 1: changing not I mean, I was just so towards the end,
- 19:31Speaker 1: I remember I was like doing the same thing I
- 19:33Speaker 1: did that when I would get up, I would sit
- 19:35Speaker 1: in the chair, have a coffee. I would go to
- 19:36Speaker 1: the treadmill do thirty minute. Like I had a whole regiment.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I would listen to the same few songs before I
- 19:41Speaker 1: went to the audition. I like had a ritual. Do
- 19:43Speaker 1: you remember what they were?
- 19:44Speaker 5: Ah, definitely Madonna.
- 19:47Speaker 1: One of mine was changed by Blind Melon.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Oh I love it?
- 19:51Speaker 2: Does it? How is a melon? Blind? It doesn't make
- 19:54Speaker 2: no sense.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Donald is the name of a very popular band. You
- 19:57Speaker 1: might like their music. Let's circle back to South Ho
- 20:00Speaker 1: was audition process.
- 20:02Speaker 5: I feel like probably I'm guessing that Babies Got Back
- 20:05Speaker 5: was another one of the songs.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Oh oh wow, that really got you.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Do you want to tell them your Baby Got backstory?
- 20:12Speaker 5: Yes?
- 20:12Speaker 2: I was very impressed that you knew I didn't know
- 20:14Speaker 2: that song as well as you knew that song.
- 20:16Speaker 5: For grad parent event, we had to do a talent
- 20:19Speaker 5: for the parents. And kids got up and played the
- 20:20Speaker 5: violin and the piano, and ten of my girlfriends and
- 20:22Speaker 5: I got up and danced and we had a whole routine.
- 20:25Speaker 1: The routine you did is a bit It was a
- 20:27Speaker 1: bit sexual. I think that was kind of odd for
- 20:29Speaker 1: the talent show.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Now they were seeing yourself.
- 20:31Speaker 5: I think all of our parents were probably like i'd
- 20:33Speaker 5: asked them, I should like, what did you think when
- 20:35Speaker 5: your child was up there at grad parent event?
- 20:37Speaker 2: It seems like a very odd How old were you guys?
- 20:40Speaker 5: We were in grade twelve, which is Canadian.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Grade, right, so you're about to graduate.
- 20:45Speaker 1: We were in grade twelve, which is Canadian for twelfth grade.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Yep.
- 20:49Speaker 5: So any who sen of my songs the Holden BC
- 20:53Speaker 5: lot and in the quarantine cleanup, I did find my
- 20:57Speaker 5: sides from the auditor Little visitors past might save both
- 21:01Speaker 5: of those. But I remember being in the parking lot
- 21:04Speaker 5: and just like seat back in the car and lying there,
- 21:08Speaker 5: and someone told me to do this. I've never told
- 21:10Speaker 5: anyone this, but to visualize yourself walking into the audition,
- 21:16Speaker 5: visualize the whole thing playing out, and visualize yourself walking
- 21:20Speaker 5: out and it going really well. And so I remember
- 21:23Speaker 5: sitting in my car in the NBC parking lot, closed
- 21:25Speaker 5: my eyes, visualizing the whole thing. And then and then
- 21:29Speaker 5: Donald and I were in there together with some other
- 21:31Speaker 5: Turks and some other Elliots and some other jds, and
- 21:33Speaker 5: we basically all took turks going in and then they
- 21:37Speaker 5: came back out. And then you go back in with
- 21:39Speaker 5: this person and read together and then they peer you
- 21:41Speaker 5: up and you read together, and it was yeah, pretty
- 21:44Speaker 5: in nerve racking.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Let me ask you a question. Did you know any
- 21:47Speaker 2: of the young ladies that were auditioning for your role?
- 21:51Speaker 2: I knew both of the guys that were auditioning for Turk.
- 21:53Speaker 2: I knew And not only did I know them, I
- 21:56Speaker 2: knew them well too, Like I hung out with one
- 21:59Speaker 2: of them and we used to play a lot of
- 22:01Speaker 2: basketball together, and then the other one we did a
- 22:04Speaker 2: bunch of movies together, or we did a movie together.
- 22:06Speaker 2: But I would see him out at the club all
- 22:07Speaker 2: the time.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Was it Denzel?
- 22:09Speaker 2: I wish it was Denzel? I wish I could be
- 22:11Speaker 2: like Denzel. I got it, yo, d.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Denzel, Denzel, this one's mine.
- 22:18Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Sorry, buddy, you'll bounce back. Don't worry about it.
- 22:21Speaker 5: So was that weird to sit there with kind of
- 22:24Speaker 5: buddies or.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, it was very It was very weird,
- 22:27Speaker 2: and it was It's also one of those things where
- 22:29Speaker 2: it was like, you know, if one of these guys
- 22:32Speaker 2: get it, I'm gonna freaking I'm gonna lose my shit,
- 22:34Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Like, as much as I
- 22:36Speaker 2: love you, guys, and as much as you know I
- 22:39Speaker 2: have root for you, guys, I want this so bad.
- 22:42Speaker 2: I want this so bad I could taste it. Both
- 22:44Speaker 2: very successful have gone on to do other things. I
- 22:48Speaker 2: just really wanted Chris Turk bad.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Yeah, well you got it.
- 22:51Speaker 5: I mean, so when you're sitting in that for people
- 22:53Speaker 5: that are listening, when you're sitting in that position and
- 22:54Speaker 5: you're going to so you're going to network, you don't
- 22:56Speaker 5: have the part yet, and you sign a six year contract.
- 23:00Speaker 5: They call it five plus one, and I was like, well,
- 23:02Speaker 5: but isn't that six years?
- 23:05Speaker 1: That's a contract lingo for. Don't tell them a six years.
- 23:08Speaker 1: We're going to call it five plus one.
- 23:10Speaker 5: Yeah, five plus one. So you signed five plus one,
- 23:12Speaker 5: and I feel like that's always such a feeling of
- 23:16Speaker 5: I mean, you're twenty four and you're thinking, wow, until
- 23:18Speaker 5: I'm thirty, and in any other scenario that would kind
- 23:21Speaker 5: of take your breath away. In this case, I was
- 23:22Speaker 5: just like, yes, for the love of God, please a
- 23:25Speaker 5: hundred years of doing this, Like there was no two
- 23:28Speaker 5: seconds of thinking about it. Was like, I'm desperate, and wow,
- 23:32Speaker 5: if it could ever go, I would be grateful for
- 23:35Speaker 5: as many years as it would go for and that
- 23:37Speaker 5: feeling of just complete signing that and so hopeful that
- 23:41Speaker 5: don't happen anyways. Then Bill called me the few hours
- 23:45Speaker 5: lay that day or it was the next day, it
- 23:46Speaker 5: was very soon after the audition was either later that
- 23:48Speaker 5: day or the next day, and I couldn't believe it.
- 23:51Speaker 5: I think we all probably after reading that script kind
- 23:53Speaker 5: of felt like it was really something special and had
- 23:57Speaker 5: the possibility of I mean you obviously you never know,
- 24:00Speaker 5: but the chance to go for it writing so good.
- 24:04Speaker 2: As you know, Sarah, I did not read the script
- 24:06Speaker 2: before we shot the pilot. I didn't read the script
- 24:08Speaker 2: until the table read and I was like, oh, that's
- 24:10Speaker 2: what happens. Read dude. I didn't know it was a
- 24:14Speaker 2: freaking dope pilot until my agent was like, dude, this
- 24:17Speaker 2: is like a really big pilot.
- 24:19Speaker 1: But I never I never knew the trivia that you
- 24:22Speaker 1: didn't read the script till the table read.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Dude, I did not know that, remember the Titans. I
- 24:26Speaker 2: didn't know what happened in the script until the table read.
- 24:29Speaker 2: I remember we did the dude. I just listen. I
- 24:33Speaker 2: just knew only my stuff. This was I was a kid,
- 24:35Speaker 2: I was young.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Listen, There would be times when we'd be shooting scrubs
- 24:38Speaker 1: where you know, the whole script wasn't out yet, and
- 24:41Speaker 1: you know, because the writers were behind, so we would
- 24:43Speaker 1: we'd get scenes, but Bill would sort of explain what
- 24:45Speaker 1: was going on, and you know, you shoot out of order.
- 24:47Speaker 1: So we'd be like Monday morning, you know, time to rehearse,
- 24:50Speaker 1: and Donald and I are like standing on a table,
- 24:52Speaker 1: and he'd whisper in my amy, like, yo, yo, why
- 24:54Speaker 1: are we standing on a table? I had no idea
- 25:01Speaker 1: what was happening in the script. All right, We're going
- 25:03Speaker 1: to take a quick break. I'll be right back with
- 25:05Speaker 1: the legendary Sarah Chalker.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And we're back, and we're back.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Sarah tell us about.
- 25:18Speaker 5: Really quickly, really quickly. Before I tell you, I need
- 25:19Speaker 5: to tell you. My favorite example of Donald not having
- 25:22Speaker 5: read the scene was during the auditions in the show,
- 25:27Speaker 5: when you were like, I can't remember what sees, but
- 25:30Speaker 5: we're supposed to be auditioning and Neil and Sam Lloyd
- 25:35Speaker 5: are auditioning you and like, I remember you walked in
- 25:40Speaker 5: and you, you know, were like, oh, yeah, I think
- 25:42Speaker 5: I could you read the actual script? You're like, I
- 25:44Speaker 5: think I can, you know, come up with a dance
- 25:45Speaker 5: for that, and you had to come up with a dance,
- 25:47Speaker 5: and you just came up with on the spot. And
- 25:49Speaker 5: you're such a fucking good dancer. You came up with
- 25:50Speaker 5: this unbelievable dance to poison. And then like, my kids
- 25:54Speaker 5: are all obsessed with the fact that it's the Fortnite
- 25:56Speaker 5: dance now and they watch the Fortnite character do it
- 25:59Speaker 5: besides you, and they've all tried to learn it. We've
- 26:03Speaker 5: tried to learn it. I can't learn it.
- 26:04Speaker 2: I don't think I could even do it again.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Listen. So I just want to say the building off
- 26:09Speaker 1: what Sarah said, that's a perfect example. Sorry Sarah, that
- 26:11Speaker 1: is the best example. Donald hadn't read the script and
- 26:14Speaker 1: everyone loves that dance. People talk about it. It's the
- 26:16Speaker 1: Fortnite dances everywhere. Donald literally showed up and was like,
- 26:19Speaker 1: you want me to do what now? And he had
- 26:21Speaker 1: to and he totally improvised that dance on the spot.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Well, there was a lot of years of of you know,
- 26:26Speaker 2: I was a huge New Audition fan, a huge Bell
- 26:29Speaker 2: Bib Davout fan. I still am a huge New Edition
- 26:32Speaker 2: in Bell Bib Davou fan, and Bobby Brown and Ralph
- 26:35Speaker 2: trans van all of them. Anyway, I had been dancing
- 26:39Speaker 2: like that my whole life, pretty much since I was
- 26:41Speaker 2: like and since ninety two, I was doing dances like that,
- 26:45Speaker 2: and so when they were like, we want you to
- 26:46Speaker 2: dance to poison, in my mind I was like, yeah,
- 26:50Speaker 2: I know, I know some steps that I could do
- 26:51Speaker 2: to that to everybody else, because I remember I was
- 26:54Speaker 2: late that day. Everybody packed the room that day, and
- 26:57Speaker 2: I know the pressure was on me, but I was like,
- 26:59Speaker 2: this is this is something that I do all the time. Now.
- 27:02Speaker 2: There are other times where I didn't prepare when we
- 27:06Speaker 2: were doing the show, and it cost us like hours
- 27:08Speaker 2: of filming.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Oh my god, Donald, I remember I was I was
- 27:12Speaker 1: directing once and Donald had a paragraph of medical jargon,
- 27:16Speaker 1: like a really hard a paragraph you would anyone would
- 27:19Speaker 1: have to practice a lot because it was like fast
- 27:22Speaker 1: medical jargon and like five sentences and I was directing
- 27:26Speaker 1: and just Donald could not get it because he hadn't
- 27:28Speaker 1: even looked at it. It's not something you could do
- 27:30Speaker 1: on the spot. And I remember, you know, when you're
- 27:32Speaker 1: directing a scene, you normally start with the widest shots
- 27:35Speaker 1: and then you start moving into closer and closer angles,
- 27:38Speaker 1: and I was like, Donald, we gotta move on, dude,
- 27:40Speaker 1: don't worry, We'll cut it together. We cut it together.
- 27:42Speaker 1: By the time we got to like an extreme close
- 27:44Speaker 1: up of Donald's face, like eyebrowed a chin, he finally
- 27:47Speaker 1: got it. And if you watch that episode, like Donald
- 27:50Speaker 1: does the whole monologue and a shot that's like this tight,
- 27:53Speaker 1: because that was finally the only time you ever got it.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Those days are over, by the way. Just anybody who's
- 27:58Speaker 2: looking to hire me for any thing, yeah, I am
- 28:01Speaker 2: not like that anymore.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I'm sure no no casting directors or directors are listening
- 28:06Speaker 1: to our podcast.
- 28:08Speaker 5: But and what Zach was saying about, you know, getting
- 28:11Speaker 5: the script sometimes, you know, as the season would get
- 28:14Speaker 5: towards the end, and the writers were so taxed trying
- 28:17Speaker 5: to crank out these scripts that were so funny. I
- 28:21Speaker 5: remember one morning we got to work on a Monday morning,
- 28:24Speaker 5: and it was the week that my character had the voiceover,
- 28:27Speaker 5: because each of our characters had a voiceover for one time,
- 28:30Speaker 5: and they didn't have the script out yet, but we
- 28:32Speaker 5: had to start shooting something, and so they said, We're
- 28:36Speaker 5: just going to do a long, kind of steady cam
- 28:38Speaker 5: shot following you through the hallways, and I just want
- 28:41Speaker 5: you to change your face around to go with different
- 28:44Speaker 5: emotions and things you're going to write. So just you know,
- 28:46Speaker 5: you're walking and you're thinking, like a little bit happy
- 28:49Speaker 5: and you're a little bit sad, and then you're thinking
- 28:51Speaker 5: about something. We talk for two hours, just me and
- 28:54Speaker 5: his steady cam.
- 28:55Speaker 1: I'm like, that's funny that they probably had to eventually
- 28:58Speaker 1: write to your expressions because they were changing, because then
- 29:00Speaker 1: they didn't and the camera didn't want to cut away.
- 29:02Speaker 1: So it's like, okay, wait, she's about it. Got a
- 29:04Speaker 1: second of seriousness and then a smile, so like we
- 29:07Speaker 1: need a one second sentence and then it's something to
- 29:10Speaker 1: smile about.
- 29:11Speaker 5: Then looking a little nostalgic and all.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Right, should we go into this episode? This is one
- 29:17Speaker 1: of my favorite episodes. This is one of my favorite
- 29:19Speaker 1: episodes of the whole nine years. It really is special,
- 29:23Speaker 1: and I want you to know I haven't seen it
- 29:25Speaker 1: in twenty years and I got goosebumps multiple times watching it.
- 29:28Speaker 1: That's how it really does hold up.
- 29:30Speaker 2: I was about, there's some really great moments in this show,
- 29:34Speaker 2: in particular with you, Sarah. This this you know, I
- 29:37Speaker 2: looked at this show when I first when we first
- 29:39Speaker 2: did this show, I was like, oh, wow, we all
- 29:41Speaker 2: get a chance to shine here. But this was a
- 29:44Speaker 2: moment I feel like for you and for Judy as well,
- 29:47Speaker 2: where you guys, you guys really crushed this episode. Like
- 29:50Speaker 2: it's really fucking good, like you two alone, you alone,
- 29:54Speaker 2: you and Judy alone. Like really, I don't know what
- 29:57Speaker 2: it is, but you guys start off on a you know,
- 30:00Speaker 2: as adversaries and by the end of it your friends.
- 30:02Speaker 2: And that's for a half an hour. To be able
- 30:04Speaker 2: to tell a story like that's very difficult to start
- 30:08Speaker 2: two people off as enemies, especially when the narrative so
- 30:11Speaker 2: far in the show has been you guys not getting along.
- 30:14Speaker 2: And so, you know, it really is a testament to
- 30:17Speaker 2: how good you are as an actress that you guys
- 30:20Speaker 2: were able to not only bring the funny, but bring
- 30:23Speaker 2: the drama and then also bring the connection so that
- 30:26Speaker 2: the story tracks all the way through. And I just
- 30:28Speaker 2: wanted to give you props on that straight up, right out,
- 30:31Speaker 2: you know the bat. And also it was so early
- 30:33Speaker 2: on in the show too, it was episode four, and
- 30:36Speaker 2: so for us to be able to jump in and
- 30:39Speaker 2: tell such a good story it's really a testament to
- 30:42Speaker 2: how good First of all, Matt tarsis, Holy shit, what
- 30:44Speaker 2: a good writer d.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Matt Tarsus wrote it. And we should also say that
- 30:47Speaker 1: this was the first episode not directed by Adam Bernstein,
- 30:50Speaker 1: and it was the first episode directed by Mark Buckland,
- 30:53Speaker 1: who really added a lot of cool style. You know,
- 30:56Speaker 1: we've spoken about how Adam Bernstein really developed the language,
- 31:00Speaker 1: how the camera moves and scrubs and how you could
- 31:02Speaker 1: do some trick shots, and how there was a lot
- 31:03Speaker 1: of creativity. The camera was a character in the show,
- 31:06Speaker 1: and Mark Bucklan, I think, with this episode, really took
- 31:08Speaker 1: that and ran with it and added a lot of
- 31:11Speaker 1: a new language to the way the show was shot.
- 31:13Speaker 5: Adam Bernstein, it should be said, directed the Baby's Got
- 31:16Speaker 5: Back video in case anyone out there does.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Not know that, Yes, that's that is that is beautiful
- 31:21Speaker 1: trivia there for you Scrubs fans. Sarah can do the
- 31:23Speaker 1: full dance and knows all the lyrics the Babies Got
- 31:25Speaker 1: Back And coincidentally, was it Sir Mix a Lot? Yes,
- 31:28Speaker 1: it is Sir Mix a Lot music video was directed
- 31:31Speaker 1: by Adam Bernstein. There you go, that's not on your
- 31:32Speaker 1: Scrubs wiki.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Right. Thank you told you wiki wiki we got it
- 31:36Speaker 2: from here.
- 31:37Speaker 5: Well, first of all, Donald, thank you for saying all
- 31:39Speaker 5: those nice things. I felt the same way about you guys.
- 31:41Speaker 5: Like I was like going, like, wow, Donald, Zach fucking
- 31:44Speaker 5: nailing this episode. And it's like we just started, like
- 31:46Speaker 5: we were a few weeks in. It was that fourth episode,
- 31:47Speaker 5: but it was the third one that we'd shot in
- 31:49Speaker 5: that chunk, you know, separated out from the pilot. And
- 31:52Speaker 5: like I feel like Bill had told us a long
- 31:55Speaker 5: time ago that he didn't he say to the network,
- 32:01Speaker 5: We're going to set it up one out of every
- 32:03Speaker 5: three patients die here and you're kind of waiting the
- 32:05Speaker 5: whole episode to find out who it's going to be,
- 32:06Speaker 5: and then they all die. I feel like he said
- 32:08Speaker 5: that to the network and they said, no, you can
- 32:09Speaker 5: only have one patient die, and he said, no, it's
- 32:11Speaker 5: going to be all three. But we have to do that. Yeah,
- 32:13Speaker 5: we're coming out of the gate right now. We're going
- 32:15Speaker 5: to show the audience that this is what the show is.
- 32:17Speaker 5: And all those years on Scrubs, this one, for me
- 32:21Speaker 5: absolutely is the one that stands out whenever I think
- 32:23Speaker 5: of the show as being the one that really shows
- 32:28Speaker 5: the responsibility that's put on these young, young, young doctors.
- 32:31Speaker 5: I mean, my little sister is in her first year
- 32:34Speaker 5: right now of being a real doctor. What a crazy
- 32:37Speaker 5: time in the world to be doing that. And I
- 32:41Speaker 5: can't believe, for stories, I can't believe what level of
- 32:44Speaker 5: responsibility that they're given right out of the gate. I mean,
- 32:48Speaker 5: I'll be at work on set and I'm on lunch,
- 32:50Speaker 5: and I come back from lunch and she's like, you know,
- 32:53Speaker 5: she's just been doing CPR on someone for thirty minutes,
- 32:57Speaker 5: trying to save them. And I'm like, well, I was
- 32:58Speaker 5: just in here a makeup touch and they took the
- 33:00Speaker 5: same curl and recurled it again to make it curly,
- 33:05Speaker 5: you know, like it just it's such a uh it
- 33:08Speaker 5: takes your breath away. Really, what the decisions young doctors
- 33:11Speaker 5: have to make?
- 33:12Speaker 1: Do you think your sister was inspired by you? I
- 33:15Speaker 1: mean it's interesting. You know a lot of younger sisters
- 33:17Speaker 1: might be inspired that their older sister was a real doctor.
- 33:20Speaker 1: But because she grew up with you playing this character,
- 33:23Speaker 1: does she think that that inspired her at all?
- 33:25Speaker 6: Oh?
- 33:25Speaker 5: I tried to get my I remember I'd say to
- 33:27Speaker 5: my family like, hey, guys, like, did you see. You know,
- 33:30Speaker 5: I was so excited about the show. I like, you've seen.
- 33:31Speaker 5: They were like, well, we t vote it because it's
- 33:34Speaker 5: on the same time as twenty four.
- 33:35Speaker 2: But that Jack.
- 33:35Speaker 5: Bauer, what he did? They I feel like, you know,
- 33:43Speaker 5: she's thirteen years younger than me, and I would like
- 33:45Speaker 5: to think that I had that kind of an influence,
- 33:48Speaker 5: but really she came out of the womb a doctor.
- 33:51Speaker 5: I mean, she the stories are crazy me. Yeah, she
- 33:54Speaker 5: was just so interested in medicine from such a young
- 33:58Speaker 5: age and really so calm under pressure, like I remember,
- 34:02Speaker 5: just just responsible. I mean I remember we went on
- 34:05Speaker 5: a road trip and she'd had her license for maybe
- 34:06Speaker 5: two weeks and my dad was like, so she's gonna drive, right,
- 34:09Speaker 5: And I was like, Dad, I've been I've been driving
- 34:11Speaker 5: for thirteen and a half years. He's like, yeah, yeah,
- 34:13Speaker 5: so she's gonna drive right. Like she just is just
- 34:16Speaker 5: a much more responsible human. But it definitely has been
- 34:20Speaker 5: interesting just rewatching a couple, like just last night, rewatching
- 34:25Speaker 5: a couple of the early episodes and thinking them, thinking
- 34:28Speaker 5: about them just in the context of her and this
- 34:31Speaker 5: one in particular, because it's pretty it's pretty unbelievable, as
- 34:35Speaker 5: you know, you see JD and Elliott and Turk and
- 34:39Speaker 5: the pressure that is on them and just all of it,
- 34:42Speaker 5: like trying to figure out, you know, what calls they
- 34:44Speaker 5: can make on their own and when to go for help.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Here's a little bit more scrubs trivia. Your little sister
- 34:50Speaker 2: taught my eighteen year old, when he was probably nine
- 34:56Speaker 2: to ten months at this time, how to walk. It
- 35:01Speaker 2: happened on the third floor of the hospital, right in
- 35:04Speaker 2: between our dressing rooms. That's so crazy crazy. And now
- 35:09Speaker 2: she's an adult and she's taking care of patients. Wow,
- 35:12Speaker 2: is she on the front line right now?
- 35:14Speaker 5: She is. I think about her mostly every minute.
- 35:18Speaker 6: Wow.
- 35:18Speaker 5: We've been pots and pans every night, all of us.
- 35:23Speaker 5: And my three year old has broken a couple measuring
- 35:26Speaker 5: cups because she gets so into it.
- 35:29Speaker 1: That's very sweet. You do it as like an honor
- 35:31Speaker 1: to the healthcare workers.
- 35:33Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's it's really cool. Actually, everybody, everybody goes
- 35:37Speaker 5: out on Everybody goes outside at like seven o'clock and
- 35:40Speaker 5: just egs the pots and pans and screams and cheers.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Oh. I like that. I want my neighborhood. I want
- 35:45Speaker 1: my neighborhood to do that. We need a primal scream.
- 35:48Speaker 5: Oh you start it, It's so cool.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Just segueing back to the show, I want to just
- 35:53Speaker 1: say that you'll hear us at a minute and forty
- 35:55Speaker 1: five seconds, there's this really cool steady cam shot that
- 35:58Speaker 1: really kind of sets up the tone of the show.
- 36:02Speaker 1: You'll hear us talk about. The word steady came a
- 36:04Speaker 1: lot on this and if you don't know what it is,
- 36:06Speaker 1: it's a it's like it's a way of mounting the
- 36:08Speaker 1: camera on an operator's body so that the operator can
- 36:11Speaker 1: move around and the camera just feels like it's floating around,
- 36:14Speaker 1: and it's something that was used extensively on the Scrubs
- 36:17Speaker 1: set as we traveled on the hallways. But I pointed out,
- 36:20Speaker 1: as I was talking about Mark Buckler in the director's style,
- 36:22Speaker 1: how I like this sort of way he's introducing that
- 36:24Speaker 1: this episode is going to be about the three of us,
- 36:26Speaker 1: where the camera starts on me and then it and
- 36:29Speaker 1: then it goes to Sarah and it never it never cuts,
- 36:32Speaker 1: and then it goes by the children and then it
- 36:33Speaker 1: comes up to Donald as he comes into the room.
- 36:35Speaker 1: And I just thought that was kind of an early
- 36:39Speaker 1: example of something that we did ended up doing a
- 36:41Speaker 1: lot of of of sort of moving around the hallways
- 36:44Speaker 1: without cutting a lot.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Yeah. Also, if I don't know if you guys noticed,
- 36:47Speaker 2: but the hospital is really dark in this episode.
- 36:50Speaker 1: Yeah, it's true.
- 36:52Speaker 2: The lights aren't on. Really everything's you know, it's very
- 36:55Speaker 2: very dark in this episode. Not only that, here's another thing.
- 36:58Speaker 2: It's jumping ahead, but this is one of the first
- 37:00Speaker 2: times where Kelso isn't the bad guy on the show. Also,
- 37:05Speaker 2: what I've noticed is that when we're dealing with something
- 37:09Speaker 2: like that's as powerful or as strong as death, it's
- 37:13Speaker 2: us versus the hospital. If you've noticed that, you know
- 37:16Speaker 2: what I mean, it's the cast versus death. And in
- 37:20Speaker 2: this one, Kelso gives is a mentor in this one.
- 37:24Speaker 2: He gives really good advice in this one to JD.
- 37:28Speaker 2: And he's not the obstacle. He's the one that's actually
- 37:31Speaker 2: trying to help solve the problems in this Now, if
- 37:35Speaker 2: you watch other episodes, he's never really like that, you
- 37:39Speaker 2: know what I mean, He's always he's always the bad guy.
- 37:42Speaker 2: This was the first episode, well obviously the first episode
- 37:45Speaker 2: in a run, but this is the first episode that
- 37:46Speaker 2: I can remember where I was like, wow, Kelso was
- 37:49Speaker 2: on board with us this whole time.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Mm hmm. I like what you pointed out too about
- 37:53Speaker 1: the lighting, because traditionally in half hour TV comedy everything's
- 37:56Speaker 1: always bright. There's like this unwritten rule that for it
- 37:59Speaker 1: to be funny, it's out of you bright. And again
- 38:02Speaker 1: just challenging some of the conventions. In this episode, both
- 38:05Speaker 1: John Inwood, the cinematographer, and Mark Buckland did things like
- 38:10Speaker 1: have have it be in dark rooms? You know, having
- 38:13Speaker 1: some of the dramatic moments like in ICU later happened
- 38:17Speaker 1: in you know, at night or at sundown, which I thought,
- 38:21Speaker 1: was I agree, that was something I hadn't I had
- 38:22Speaker 1: noticed that was this is the first time they did that.
- 38:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it carries on throughout the series too.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Yeah. At two twenty six we meet Catherine Juston playing
- 38:31Speaker 1: Missus Tanner. Now, she is such an uzz She has
- 38:34Speaker 1: since passed away, but was such an extraordinary actress. And
- 38:36Speaker 1: I remember she had just done a very high profile
- 38:40Speaker 1: run on the West Wing where that character had passed
- 38:43Speaker 1: away as well, and I remember thinking, well, is that
- 38:46Speaker 1: gonna be odd that she's coming onto art. I mean,
- 38:49Speaker 1: I'm glad she's coming on because she's a wonderful actress,
- 38:51Speaker 1: but having just played someone else who died. I think
- 38:54Speaker 1: I just remember that being in my head like she
- 38:56Speaker 1: had just done such a hope, high profile moment on
- 38:59Speaker 1: West Wing. But then the second I started working with her,
- 39:02Speaker 1: I just felt in awe of her, of her talent,
- 39:06Speaker 1: and that was the furthest thing from my mind.
- 39:08Speaker 5: It's one of my favorite moments in the episode when
- 39:10Speaker 5: she says, are you a good doctor? And you say
- 39:12Speaker 5: it's probably too soon to tell, And I just feel
- 39:14Speaker 5: like it's such a such an example of how the
- 39:17Speaker 5: show walked that line of like you're just on the
- 39:20Speaker 5: edge of your seat and you're crying and then you're laughing,
- 39:22Speaker 5: and there's a few moments.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Oh, there's a couple of moments that I laughed in
- 39:26Speaker 2: my ass. So when JD goes to the park to
- 39:30Speaker 2: meet up with her, yeah, and he's like, you got
- 39:33Speaker 2: to get your ass back to the hospital. And then
- 39:36Speaker 2: he's like, is that some Moores? And then they cut
- 39:38Speaker 2: away and then they cut back and he's still chastising her,
- 39:41Speaker 2: but now you've got chocolate all on his lips.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Yeah, JD was not going to pass up Amores moment.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Are you kidding me?
- 39:47Speaker 5: You think he could have gone a big cake.
- 39:50Speaker 1: JD was not. JD was trying. It was a perfect
- 39:53Speaker 1: JD thing to be like really trying to be taken
- 39:55Speaker 1: seriously with s'mores, chuck let over all of his lips.
- 40:00Speaker 5: They're one of my favorite laugh out low moments is
- 40:02Speaker 5: when donald is doing.
- 40:03Speaker 1: The workout video, which is foreshadowing the Bois and dance
- 40:09Speaker 1: a little bit because you're dancing in the very same
- 40:11Speaker 1: room and and a little.
- 40:13Speaker 5: Bit and some and some sweet moves that I guarantee
- 40:15Speaker 5: you we're not in the eighties workout video. But when
- 40:18Speaker 5: the like she had such energy and warm dude, the
- 40:20Speaker 5: Women League of Women Voters called and they want to
- 40:22Speaker 5: know where to zend your membership.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Sarah tell us about I'm a tell us about I'm
- 40:30Speaker 1: a Chunky Monkey from Funky Town because I remember that,
- 40:33Speaker 1: and I just was like, who wrote that? That is
- 40:34Speaker 1: the most random thing in the world.
- 40:36Speaker 5: I guess Matt Tarsus or who knows.
- 40:39Speaker 1: But was the idea that you were just testing out?
- 40:42Speaker 1: Elliott was just testing out that she could say anything
- 40:45Speaker 1: in front of a woman.
- 40:46Speaker 5: Yes, yes, I think so.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Yes.
- 40:49Speaker 5: Obviously to Carla's disclay.
- 40:52Speaker 2: There's a lot of there's a lot of trivia in
- 40:54Speaker 2: this episode, because we we introduced characters that from that
- 40:59Speaker 2: moment on weren't on the show anymore. Like I remember
- 41:03Speaker 2: Layla Lee, she plays the surgeon in the room with
- 41:07Speaker 2: doctor Wynn and Turk.
- 41:08Speaker 1: She was really good. I had the same reaction. I
- 41:10Speaker 1: was like, what happened to her?
- 41:11Speaker 2: She was, yeah, so I do know the story. I
- 41:13Speaker 2: remember we were filming and it was a couple of
- 41:17Speaker 2: episodes in and she was going to come back as
- 41:19Speaker 2: my nemesis. And she was saying how she had just
- 41:22Speaker 2: got this part on a television show that was going
- 41:25Speaker 2: to take her out of California, or not out of California,
- 41:28Speaker 2: but out of the Los Angeles area, and she was
- 41:30Speaker 2: going to go do that instead. Now I remember being like,
- 41:33Speaker 2: but what about us, what about what we've got going?
- 41:36Speaker 2: This is so funny, And she was like, you know,
- 41:38Speaker 2: I'm a guest star on this show, but on the
- 41:41Speaker 2: other show I would be a lead. And so she
- 41:43Speaker 2: went and took the other job. To be honest with you,
- 41:45Speaker 2: And now do you remember what the show was. It
- 41:47Speaker 2: was Tremors. Oh okay, it was the syndicated version of Tremors,
- 41:50Speaker 2: And I remember it ran for a while and the
- 41:53Speaker 2: dad from Family Ties I think is on it. I'm
- 41:56Speaker 2: not sure. I couldn't.
- 41:57Speaker 1: I just remember watching that scene, which we'll get to
- 42:00Speaker 1: you later in the episode, and you guys had such
- 42:02Speaker 1: a funny banter that that's spoofing of a couple driving together.
- 42:06Speaker 1: And then I had the same thought. I go, oh
- 42:08Speaker 1: that that that young woman was so funny. What happened
- 42:10Speaker 1: to her? And I guess she got her own show
- 42:12Speaker 1: at the time.
- 42:12Speaker 2: She got well, yeah, she got a job and went
- 42:15Speaker 2: on to do other things.
- 42:17Speaker 5: To other people of Scrubs lore who were introduced in
- 42:19Speaker 5: this episode seven fifty nine, I very quickly. If you
- 42:24Speaker 5: watched Danny rose Field assistant and obviously became a producer
- 42:27Speaker 5: on the show. He walks by in the park and
- 42:29Speaker 5: he has Tankers.
- 42:30Speaker 2: On his shoulders.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Shoulders, yeah, and Tankers was what a big bulldog that
- 42:34Speaker 1: he Yeah, Tankers And I just we have to talk
- 42:38Speaker 1: about the legendary Mike Schwartz, who plays his very first appearance,
- 42:43Speaker 1: very first appearance. A lot of times we're watching these
- 42:45Speaker 1: episodes that I forget that some of these people were
- 42:46Speaker 1: introduced so early. So Mike Schwartz was one of the
- 42:48Speaker 1: writers on the show. Very funny a comedy writer, and
- 42:51Speaker 1: he plays the delivery guy, the ups guy, if you will.
- 42:54Speaker 1: That his first they established him giving something to Kelso
- 42:57Speaker 1: and then later he comes and delivers a ton of
- 42:58Speaker 1: bricks to me. He is uh he. We had so
- 43:01Speaker 1: many laughs with that guy.
- 43:02Speaker 5: Huh oh, constantly doing bits and making us all laugh,
- 43:05Speaker 5: Like you walk by him in the hallway and he'd
- 43:07Speaker 5: be like, what's that, Oh, it's Jake Crew.
- 43:10Speaker 1: He would do this. He would do this bit that
- 43:12Speaker 1: I don't know why. It was so funny, but he
- 43:14Speaker 1: would go he would pretend to call off to someone
- 43:16Speaker 1: that wasn't there, and he would and he would do
- 43:19Speaker 1: a bit where he was pretending that they were asking
- 43:21Speaker 1: him who made his shirt, and so he'd be reaching
- 43:24Speaker 1: for the tag. He'd be what, oh, hold on to me.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's Jay Crew. And it was so stupid,
- 43:31Speaker 1: but he was talking to no one and you would
- 43:33Speaker 1: laugh every single time.
- 43:34Speaker 5: Every time were Lonely's guy in the world where you
- 43:36Speaker 5: tap him on the shoulder and be like, we ended.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Up putting that in the show.
- 43:42Speaker 2: He went on to be the was he the drummer
- 43:46Speaker 2: for the for the airband That same episode that we
- 43:49Speaker 2: were talking about ast year.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Yeah, he liked his character. Like later episodes we learned
- 43:53Speaker 1: that his character like speed metal.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Right and and and that his character was a big
- 43:57Speaker 2: time like drug addict and everything like that.
- 43:58Speaker 1: And it was always I think suff that and he
- 44:01Speaker 1: was very lonely. But that that bit about that was
- 44:03Speaker 1: his bit where you if no one touched him, So
- 44:06Speaker 1: if you ever did graize his shoulder, he would sort
- 44:08Speaker 1: of cuddle his own shoulder because he was so low.
- 44:11Speaker 1: He was so lonely and lacking.
- 44:13Speaker 5: Of touch, the loneliest guy in the world. And then
- 44:15Speaker 5: Randall Winston is introduced as Death Yes, yeahs.
- 44:20Speaker 1: And Randall Winston was our line producer on the show.
- 44:24Speaker 1: And uh, for those who don't know, a line producer
- 44:26Speaker 1: is the producer that really is handling the sort of
- 44:28Speaker 1: the daily money of things, really like the guy with
- 44:30Speaker 1: the spreadsheet being like we can afford that, we can't
- 44:32Speaker 1: afford that. And he was a very he was he
- 44:36Speaker 1: is a very tall man. How tall would you say,
- 44:38Speaker 1: is six seven or six six? Yeah? And so he
- 44:41Speaker 1: he was established early on as as Death and run yes,
- 44:48Speaker 1: and some of you are too young to know that
- 44:51Speaker 1: what this joke is about. Connect four, but Connect four
- 44:54Speaker 1: was a was a game from.
- 44:55Speaker 2: It still is a game still, but I'm.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Saying they didn't have the cheesy ad. She's the ad
- 45:00Speaker 1: in the eighties was a brother and sister playing and
- 45:04Speaker 1: the sister wins and the brother goes pretty sneaky sis.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Remember that, you guys can look it up on YouTube.
- 45:12Speaker 1: And so that's why we were spoofing that old eighties
- 45:15Speaker 1: ad where I go pretty sneaky death.
- 45:19Speaker 2: But you got to do the lead up to it
- 45:21Speaker 2: is I win where I don't see it right here
- 45:25Speaker 2: diagonally pretty sneaky sis, pretty sneaky Sis.
- 45:31Speaker 5: And Randall is his main belief was that it's not
- 45:35Speaker 5: a party unless both hands are in the air. So
- 45:37Speaker 5: we had the most incredible rap parties.
- 45:40Speaker 2: And parties man and Randall and Randall is like some
- 45:48Speaker 2: of the highlights of every part, like the some of
- 45:52Speaker 2: the best party highlights that I've ever experienced involved Randall.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Fortunately for us, the guys ending the money for the
- 46:00Speaker 1: party really loved to party.
- 46:03Speaker 5: Yeah, we had some good parties.
- 46:05Speaker 1: I'm sure there's episodes where they were like, you don't
- 46:06Speaker 1: need that set, we're throwing a party.
- 46:12Speaker 5: Why Johnny Ce's home space looked very sparse because we
- 46:17Speaker 5: needed to go to Voge.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Oh god, we were just talking about that. How Johnny ceed.
- 46:20Speaker 1: They didn't get around to Johnny cees uh partly building
- 46:23Speaker 1: Johnny C's apartment. It was just a hospital set.
- 46:26Speaker 5: But I think Randall spearheaded. I'm sure the like we
- 46:28Speaker 5: got to we got to go on that crazy, amazing
- 46:31Speaker 5: trip everybody to Vegas. We had to do like they
- 46:34Speaker 5: were able to kind of combine a press event with
- 46:36Speaker 5: the Scrubs wrap party, and so they organized it so
- 46:39Speaker 5: like our whole cap went to Vegas all together.
- 46:43Speaker 2: Things that will never happen ever in ever again.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Right, I doubt any show is taking their whole company
- 46:49Speaker 1: to Vegas to throw a bash. Will the old days?
- 46:53Speaker 5: Yeah, when we got to shoot a whole season in
- 46:56Speaker 5: the Bahamas with the whole crewis company an episode?
- 46:59Speaker 1: Sarah Maym stayed and shot a season?
- 47:03Speaker 5: What is the season?
- 47:04Speaker 1: Donald? I want to know the sports question, and I
- 47:07Speaker 1: want you to be honest. Yes, did you know what
- 47:09Speaker 1: the quote unquote catch was? Absolutely, it's about it. It's
- 47:13Speaker 1: a famous thing that sports people know about.
- 47:15Speaker 2: Absolutely. So Joe Montana, Yeah, it looked like he couldn't
- 47:19Speaker 2: throw it to anyone in this game. Now, granted I
- 47:23Speaker 2: don't know who who they were playing, so when we're
- 47:27Speaker 2: talking about it in the show, I didn't know who
- 47:28Speaker 2: they were playing. But he found Dwight Clark in the
- 47:31Speaker 2: end zone and it was you know, it's one of
- 47:34Speaker 2: the biggest catches in history. As a matter of fact,
- 47:36Speaker 2: it's a part of a commercial, like a Gatorade commercial
- 47:39Speaker 2: or something like that. And that's how I first heard
- 47:42Speaker 2: about it because I wasn't a big football fan growing up.
- 47:45Speaker 2: I didn't I didn't become a football fan until later
- 47:47Speaker 2: on in life. But yes, I didn't know when we
- 47:50Speaker 2: did the When when they referenced the catch, I knew
- 47:52Speaker 2: exactly what it was.
- 47:53Speaker 1: Okay, good because I didn't know because I don't know
- 47:55Speaker 1: anything about sports. If like everyone who's into sports knows, oh,
- 47:58Speaker 1: the catch, it's called like the catch.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Well, I mean at that time it was called the catch.
- 48:03Speaker 2: I'm sure. Since then they're like Eli Manning and Mario
- 48:07Speaker 2: Manningham they have a you know how he found him
- 48:11Speaker 2: on the you know, running down the it's it's I
- 48:14Speaker 2: didn't know when or where the catch was, but I
- 48:17Speaker 2: had heard of the reference before.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Donald tell us about the bowling thing. Because I was
- 48:20Speaker 1: laughing at this going, what are those what are those pins?
- 48:23Speaker 5: Like?
- 48:23Speaker 1: What is that supposed to be in the hospital of
- 48:25Speaker 1: those giant blue things.
- 48:27Speaker 2: First of all, this this is a testament for how
- 48:29Speaker 2: immature Christopher Turk was. So the kid says to him, Hey,
- 48:32Speaker 2: it's the Catch. Turk turns around, goes, yeah, I watched
- 48:35Speaker 2: The Catch with you, and within fifteen minutes he's bowling
- 48:38Speaker 2: a kid down the hospital hall. Like, how did this
- 48:41Speaker 2: kid convince Like, that's how weak willed Chris Turk is.
- 48:44Speaker 2: How in the hell did this kid convince him to
- 48:48Speaker 2: put him in a wheelchair and push him down the
- 48:51Speaker 2: hall into a bunch of I guess they were recycling bins?
- 48:55Speaker 1: Is that where they were supposed to being? I think so,
- 48:57Speaker 1: because to me they look like cardboard tubes that someone.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Right, I'm hoping that it was a recycling But like,
- 49:03Speaker 2: how did this kid convince him? And the rest of
- 49:05Speaker 2: the floor, Like Chris Turk walked out the room and
- 49:08Speaker 2: was like, Yo, this is what we're gonna do, all right,
- 49:12Speaker 2: I'm gonna put him in a wheelchair.
- 49:13Speaker 1: I know, I just started. I know, I just started
- 49:16Speaker 1: as a doctor here, but I'm gonna roll a patient
- 49:19Speaker 1: in a wheelchair down the Hall. If you're a new doctor,
- 49:23Speaker 1: don't try that at work, please.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Well, and that was the great thing about the show
- 49:27Speaker 2: also is that he was held accountable for it, you
- 49:30Speaker 2: know Kelso right away. And this is where Kelso mentors
- 49:34Speaker 2: Turk kind of also like, we're not here to make friends,
- 49:36Speaker 2: We're here to treat these patients. Dude, be a doctor.
- 49:39Speaker 1: Yeah. I wanted to talk about the Park Salary referenced
- 49:42Speaker 1: it already, but I remember feeling really bad at nine
- 49:45Speaker 1: minutes and thirty seconds slamming that little girl's face into
- 49:48Speaker 1: the cake.
- 49:48Speaker 2: That was hilarious. I wish I could do that to
- 49:50Speaker 2: my kids sometimes.
- 49:52Speaker 1: It was funny. I mean it was funny on paper
- 49:54Speaker 1: when we got there and she has that cute little
- 49:56Speaker 1: face and I was like, so, you guys really want
- 49:58Speaker 1: me to jam this girl's face cake? And they're like, yeah,
- 50:01Speaker 1: you gotta do it. You can't just like fake it.
- 50:03Speaker 1: You got to do it. And I was like, and
- 50:04Speaker 1: I talked to her. I was like, sweetie, are you
- 50:06Speaker 1: okay with this? And she's like, yeah, sure, it's gonna
- 50:08Speaker 1: be funny. And I was like, all right, here we go.
- 50:09Speaker 1: And I just jammed her head in and it felt
- 50:11Speaker 1: really nice.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Yeah, listen, Sarah can attest to this. She has children
- 50:16Speaker 2: as much as we love our children.
- 50:17Speaker 5: Oh, sometimes you want to just.
- 50:21Speaker 2: Their face into a cake.
- 50:24Speaker 5: Especially to be quarantining for the near multiple multiple days months.
- 50:30Speaker 2: If I had the opportunity, and I knew my wife
- 50:33Speaker 2: wouldn't be pissed off at me for doing it, Rocco's
- 50:36Speaker 2: face would have been slammed into a couple of its birthday.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Cakes, into many a cake.
- 50:40Speaker 2: I'm just gonna put that out there right now, and.
- 50:42Speaker 5: I need to go bake a couple of cakes.
- 50:44Speaker 1: We're gonna go break and we come back. We have
- 50:46Speaker 1: a caller, all right. We're getting good at that whole
- 50:55Speaker 1: break thing, Joelle. We're very lucky here on this show,
- 50:58Speaker 1: Sarah Chalk that we get to take a call or
- 51:00Speaker 1: once an episode. And here she is, what's your what's your?
- 51:04Speaker 2: Alexis Torres?
- 51:09Speaker 1: Donald just gave you an Oprah intro. I was looking
- 51:14Speaker 1: for your name, And the good thing about zoom is
- 51:15Speaker 1: it just says it right there. Alexis Torres, plumbley right
- 51:18Speaker 1: there on the bottom ruin the woman's hearing she's in quarantine.
- 51:26Speaker 6: I'm actually in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania right now.
- 51:30Speaker 1: My family has a steakhouse nearby called the Glass Lounge.
- 51:38Speaker 6: Oh. I haven't gone there yet, but it's awesome.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Will you go there? I want you to tell him
- 51:43Speaker 1: I sent you. If you're in there, If you're in
- 51:45Speaker 1: that area, go.
- 51:46Speaker 2: To the gods. It's going to be a buddy. It's
- 51:48Speaker 2: going to be a will Oh.
- 51:49Speaker 1: Yeah, not now obviously, but you know when when this
- 51:52Speaker 1: last nightmare is over, go check out the Glass Lounge.
- 51:55Speaker 6: Yeah. I will definitely go for sure.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Thank you for coming on. And do you have a question?
- 52:00Speaker 1: Doesn't have to be Sarah Chalk focused. It doesn't just
- 52:03Speaker 1: because she's yes.
- 52:04Speaker 2: You want to we understand.
- 52:08Speaker 5: Is a human and she probably knows the best person
- 52:11Speaker 5: to talk to it.
- 52:12Speaker 7: I mean, we'll see, No, just kidding. I have actually
- 52:17Speaker 7: technically question for all of you guys. If you could
- 52:20Speaker 7: switch rolls with anyone in the series, any character, Who
- 52:24Speaker 7: would it be and how would you play their character?
- 52:26Speaker 7: Would it be different than how it was originally played?
- 52:28Speaker 1: Or that's a very good question. Sarah go first.
- 52:32Speaker 5: I mean, if it meant that I could have Donald's
- 52:35Speaker 5: dancing skills?
- 52:37Speaker 1: Was the fantasy? Was that fantasy that Sarah and I
- 52:39Speaker 1: were making out and I was making out with you
- 52:41Speaker 1: because she was you. Oh my god.
- 52:43Speaker 2: That it starts off where you guys are making out
- 52:44Speaker 2: and then she's like, you fantasized about kissing turk just now,
- 52:47Speaker 2: didn't you?
- 52:50Speaker 5: And then I made up with Mandy Moore as myself.
- 52:52Speaker 1: You were Mandy was dressed up as herself. No, Mandy
- 52:55Speaker 1: was just herself and you were dressed up as me.
- 52:56Speaker 1: I think, right, I think that was a really beautiful
- 52:59Speaker 1: moment and television history right there.
- 53:01Speaker 5: I did make out how to make Out with Judy
- 53:03Speaker 5: in the pilot? Yeah, that's right.
- 53:05Speaker 1: Yeah, we just watched that were you made out with
- 53:07Speaker 1: the model girl?
- 53:08Speaker 2: Is that the pilot or is that the second episode?
- 53:10Speaker 1: That was the second episode?
- 53:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 53:11Speaker 1: But so you'd like to be Donald if you could
- 53:13Speaker 1: be anybody else, is what you're saying.
- 53:14Speaker 5: Well, if I could, if if I could do that
- 53:16Speaker 5: fucking poison dance or rowdy, that would be pretty low.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Low brush thatch crush. It's a very good question, I guess.
- 53:26Speaker 1: I it's funny because you don't want to pick. You
- 53:29Speaker 1: want to have some screen time, right, you want to
- 53:31Speaker 1: pick one of the sevens, so you're gonna have some
- 53:32Speaker 1: good screen time. I think I would choose Johnny C
- 53:37Speaker 1: just because he had such amazing and they just knew
- 53:40Speaker 1: how to write for him so amazingly well, and he
- 53:43Speaker 1: he was just uh, I don't know. I think that
- 53:47Speaker 1: I just love the all the material they gave Johnny,
- 53:50Speaker 1: So I think that would be a really challenging fun
- 53:51Speaker 1: part to even attempt to Doick.
- 53:55Speaker 5: Mash walking around in banana hammock.
- 53:56Speaker 2: That's who I was going to pick. If I could
- 53:58Speaker 2: pick anybody, I guess it would be mash uh if
- 54:01Speaker 2: I could get But like we teased, we used to
- 54:04Speaker 2: make fun of Mashow about running line and everything like that.
- 54:07Speaker 2: But I had such a hard time learning my lines
- 54:09Speaker 2: back then that I probably it probably would have suited
- 54:12Speaker 2: me to play Mash.
- 54:13Speaker 1: You know, the first thing, the first step to a
- 54:16Speaker 1: solving memorizing your lin style is to actually just do it, or.
- 54:20Speaker 2: To read the script. Actually that's read the script.
- 54:23Speaker 1: I love how you're always like, I just have such
- 54:24Speaker 1: a hard time memorizing lives. I'm like, dude, you've been
- 54:26Speaker 1: playing PlayStation in your pressing room.
- 54:28Speaker 2: That's what you even looked at it? No, yeah, okay, right,
- 54:31Speaker 2: do you have another question?
- 54:32Speaker 1: Another question We're going to answer a better one.
- 54:36Speaker 2: Yeah, your question sucked. That's what I just said.
- 54:39Speaker 1: I like you, I.
- 54:40Speaker 5: Like creative, it was, it was thoughtful.
- 54:45Speaker 1: I think you're spectacular and I love Harrisburg, but I
- 54:47Speaker 1: think you got a better question than you.
- 54:51Speaker 2: No, I don't know if now you got.
- 54:53Speaker 7: To ask what was something that you were super proud
- 54:56Speaker 7: of back then that you did. Maybe it was a
- 54:58Speaker 7: scene or a specific joke or anything like that. But
- 55:01Speaker 7: then now, since you guys are doing the rewatch and
- 55:04Speaker 7: you've seen it, now you're kind of like.
- 55:05Speaker 6: Oh, that wasn't as good as I remember.
- 55:07Speaker 1: That's a good question, Sarah. As guests, you have to
- 55:10Speaker 1: go first.
- 55:11Speaker 5: Jesus, the pressure. I feel like interestingly enough.
- 55:15Speaker 1: Like you're like, I feel like interesting enough. I was
- 55:17Speaker 1: just fucking amazing.
- 55:18Speaker 6: I mean, I mean, I thought you were amazing.
- 55:20Speaker 5: Like I on the early stuff, a little bit hard,
- 55:22Speaker 5: harder to watch. I feel like I learned so much
- 55:26Speaker 5: on the show. I feel like I learned so much
- 55:28Speaker 5: from Baill, I learned so much from the rest of
- 55:29Speaker 5: the cast, And I feel like it's so different watching
- 55:32Speaker 5: those early episode Thans eight years later. Certainly with Elliott too,
- 55:36Speaker 5: the character changed a lot. Like in the pilot, we
- 55:38Speaker 5: even did reshoots. She was much harder and much you
- 55:42Speaker 5: know there was she was a bit more of a
- 55:44Speaker 5: batch in the in the in the beginning, and then
- 55:46Speaker 5: and then we actually did a couple of reshoots to
- 55:48Speaker 5: soften her. And then I think, you know, the line
- 55:53Speaker 5: between me and her started to blur. It's a first
- 55:56Speaker 5: part of your question what were you the most proud of?
- 55:58Speaker 5: Certainly interestingly enough, it's this is definitely one of those
- 56:01Speaker 5: episodes like when I think back on the eight years,
- 56:03Speaker 5: this is the first one to pop into my mind
- 56:05Speaker 5: about just the kind of show that that Scrubs was.
- 56:10Speaker 5: And and then in terms of things to do differently, well,
- 56:15Speaker 5: that's just I.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Mean, Sarah, I don't think you could have done everything differently.
- 56:18Speaker 1: I wish that I could go back and have a chin,
- 56:22Speaker 1: because I this episode starts with the least flattering view
- 56:26Speaker 1: of my non existent chin, and in later episodes I
- 56:31Speaker 1: would I would look at the director and be like, bro,
- 56:33Speaker 1: don't shoot me like that. I mean, I'm doing I'm
- 56:35Speaker 1: doing the best I can with what I have, but
- 56:37Speaker 1: that's not the angle I want for myself and Bill.
- 56:41Speaker 5: I don't know how many listeners know this, but Bill
- 56:43Speaker 5: would like to add things that were actual, real physical
- 56:46Speaker 5: attributes and write them into the show. So characters would
- 56:50Speaker 5: be named by their physical attributes. So like the guy
- 56:52Speaker 5: with the beard is beard for say, because you know,
- 56:55Speaker 5: and so for me, my character, you know, you had
- 56:58Speaker 5: to say lines like short gives me pig face, which
- 57:01Speaker 5: is not untrue, and or there was one where I
- 57:06Speaker 5: had my characters like, oh yeah, chin, hair's back because
- 57:09Speaker 5: I have this mole where three hairs grew out of it.
- 57:13Speaker 5: And so that was actually written into the show. By
- 57:15Speaker 5: the way, my son said to me a few years ago,
- 57:18Speaker 5: completely seriously. He's like, Mama, I have terrible news. And
- 57:21Speaker 5: I said what, and he goes, you're growing a beard.
- 57:25Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 57:26Speaker 5: So so there were definitely moments of the show where
- 57:30Speaker 5: he just had to go gate all in the name
- 57:32Speaker 5: of comedy and so air out my biggest insecurities.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, in.
- 57:38Speaker 5: Terms of how it worked too, like Bill would come
- 57:40Speaker 5: up and he would watch us, and this is not
- 57:41Speaker 5: common for every you know, creator of a show to
- 57:44Speaker 5: come up for every single rehearsal. He would come up
- 57:47Speaker 5: from you know, to the to the set from the
- 57:49Speaker 5: writer's room, and the writer's room was in another wing
- 57:51Speaker 5: of the hospital. He would tweak a lot of stuff.
- 57:53Speaker 5: He would say, I actually don't love this blocking. I
- 57:56Speaker 5: think how it'd had it in my head was X
- 57:58Speaker 5: Y or Z, and and he would he would. He
- 58:01Speaker 5: would tweak our performance in our jokes too, to the
- 58:03Speaker 5: point where, like a lot of times I think actors
- 58:05Speaker 5: like don't like a line read, and I just had
- 58:07Speaker 5: so much respect for him. I'd be like, yeah, just
- 58:09Speaker 5: if you've got some way in your head, just you know,
- 58:12Speaker 5: tell us and we'll do it right.
- 58:14Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Well, thank you for coming on. Lexais plumb.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Are you gonna give her? Are you gonna give you
- 58:21Speaker 1: the Oprah? Goodbye? Send off as well done.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Let's say goodbye to Alexis Torres plumber.
- 58:29Speaker 1: You get a car, You get a car, You get.
- 58:30Speaker 2: A car, Alexis, We cannot give you a car.
- 58:33Speaker 6: I know it's okay. I can't go anywhere anyway.
- 58:36Speaker 1: Go anywhere, yes, yes, go get a state. When this
- 58:38Speaker 1: is all said and done at the Glass Lounge, all right,
- 58:40Speaker 1: thank you so much, Alexis. Alexis writer you guys at
- 58:44Speaker 1: eleven forty nine. One of my biggest regrets in the
- 58:47Speaker 1: history of Scrubs is that I flinch right before those
- 58:50Speaker 1: bricks fall on me. And I remember Bill being so
- 58:53Speaker 1: disappointed in me because there were like four takes of
- 58:55Speaker 1: it and I flinched every time. But it's pretty tricky
- 58:58Speaker 1: to not flinch when you know, bunch, I know that
- 59:00Speaker 1: they're not real bricks, but it still was noticeably uncomfortable.
- 59:06Speaker 5: I mean, it'd be pretty hard not to, especially, I
- 59:08Speaker 5: feel like all that shit, like, even if it was
- 59:10Speaker 5: like a major prat fall or something, once you've done
- 59:13Speaker 5: it once, I feel like our best chance out of
- 59:15Speaker 5: the gate is on your first take, because the second
- 59:17Speaker 5: you've done it, once you know what's going to happen.
- 59:19Speaker 5: You know the feeling of it. Maybe you like tweak
- 59:21Speaker 5: something a little bit in your shoulder and then it's
- 59:23Speaker 5: kind of it's around.
- 59:23Speaker 1: But this was early on in the show, and I
- 59:25Speaker 1: and I and I was I was really loving doing
- 59:27Speaker 1: physical comedy, and I always love physical comedy. You referenced
- 59:30Speaker 1: John Ridder. I mean when I grew up on Three's Company,
- 59:32Speaker 1: and I just thought that John Ridder was the funniest
- 59:35Speaker 1: person I'd ever seen, and I wanted to be like him.
- 59:39Speaker 1: And Bill was giving me lots of love for my
- 59:41Speaker 1: physical comedy, and this was the first moment where he
- 59:43Speaker 1: like called me in the editors room. He's like, dude,
- 59:45Speaker 1: you flinched on every take and I was.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Like, no, you blew it.
- 59:50Speaker 1: I was like, I let daddy down, fucking blew it.
- 59:53Speaker 5: The first time I was called up by by Bill
- 59:56Speaker 5: after he left the editing room was you guys will
- 59:59Speaker 5: remember the we had been so lucky to get nominated
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: for an Emmy and we were going and we were
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: excited and I got to borrow this fancy dress and
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: the stylist I never had a stylist before, and she said,
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: so you need to go get it. And I said, no,
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: I'm not going to do that. I'm not going to
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: go get a tan. And she said, okay, go get
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: a spray tan. And so I said, okay. So I
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: think the Emmys were like on the Sunday and so
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: on the friday of work.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: It might have been well before that. It might have
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: been well before that. It might have been like maybe
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: five days before or something like that, dude, because we
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: did the whole up.
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: Okay, Okay, So I get to uh, I get to
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: the tanning booth and it's like that fucking episode of
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: Friends where Ross becomes a nine instead of for three,
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: because it keeps spraying stuff at him. He doesn't turn around,
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: its sprays again. So I get in there and you
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: watch this little video and you put this cream on
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: your hands and you got to spin around and do
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: these weird poses. And I had like negative five minute
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: to get this done before going to set, and I
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: put a hairnet over my face so that I wouldn't
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: tan my face, and then I rip that off and
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: then then keep spraying, and so I get to set
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: and I'm I'm tanned, and then no.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: I'm say, hold on, now, you were you were full
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: of No, no, not yet, not yet, because what happens
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: with this spray ten is it develops over time.
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: And so I was in the makeup chair and my
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: makeup and we're doing these scenes and then as the
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: day goes on, I'm just getting like more and more
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: and more tanned, and instead of actually tanned, it was
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: just more and more and more orange. And so Bill
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: comes harder than any special effect we've ever done on
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: a show, order than the zac's head explode in the
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: fantasy sequence, is going to be making you look less
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: like an oop umpa you were, like, we're trying to
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: float filters in front of your face because we can't
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: color time it and just jack out, like we can't
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: just wind the knob and take out some of the
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: color because we keep doing it. You're see with Donald
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: and then make Donald white.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Dude, I'm gonna say something right now. I remember, I
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: remember when it happened. I remember you being on set
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: and I remember saying to you, did you change something?
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Did you do your hair different or something like that,
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: what's so different? And you were like, I remember, ten.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: I remember, just like kids in a in a family,
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: the three of us, whenever one of us was in trouble,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: I was always so happy when it wasn't me, and
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: you just be like you just be on set, just
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: kind of bouncing around like shit, somebody's in trouble and
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: it's not me, and Sarah is freaking orange, so embarrassing.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: It's like we were laughing time I got the braces
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: on the inside of my mouth.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: They were laughing about that. When Donald showed up with
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: bracest and he would like, so Bill, I got braafift
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: and nobody couldn't even notice.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: The exact same thing.
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: Oh good, So did you just have to go get
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: and taken out.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Yeah right off, Yeah, dude, yeah, he made me getting
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: taken out.
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: I got in visil line in like season two. Everybody
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: made so much fun of me, but I had it.
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: I would like I had to take him out like
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: right before take but you're supposed to war like twenty
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: two to between. Like it was just a disaster.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: I just remember Donald, it was so funny watching him
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: try to sell the bill that the brace is. Nobody
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: was gonna notice those braces on the inside of his teeth.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: It's gonna be great. Everybody's gonna love this. Nobody's even
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: gonna notice.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: And I think it's gonna be great for my It's
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: gonna be great for my teeth.
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: I remember I went I went home that night after
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: the spray tann and I had to scrub every ounce
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: of my body. I just my face and my body.
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: I just was like taking to it. And then I
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: did a movie in Hawaii last year and the person
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: wanted us to do a spray tan so Lauren Lapis
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: who plays the lead in the movie, and I was
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: supposed to have spray tns. I said, I've actually had
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: a couple of really bad experiences with spray tands. I
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: don't recommend it. I think it's just reacts with me
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: the bad Orange way. And they're like, no, no, no, we
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: have like the best people in Hawaii. They're gonna come,
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: They're gonna do it. You're gonna love it. So I
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: come down the next morning, the woman comes to how
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: Telling room, the four sprays you down. I come down
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: to the hair and makeup trailer and they are freaking out.
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: They're like, your legs are orange. And then Lauren Lapis
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: hasn't seen any of this preamble Cheo Rooks, and she's like,
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: who loves the sprint? And they're like, Sarah, quickly go
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: back at Joe tone, take some salt, scrub, scrub it
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: all off, get it all off quick. I'm like, okay,
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: I'll be right back.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: Oh God, So Sarah, I don't think Spray's hands are
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: for you.
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: No.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: Do you burn when you get into the sun?
- 1:04:18Speaker 7: Uh?
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: He is?
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: She's very pale. Look at her, like how pale she is.
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: It was the other joke on this movie, the reason Hawaii.
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: I would literally, in between in between scenes, I would
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: be you know, completely covered up to the point where
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: we would go out at night and everyone else would
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: be like uh, chalk, do you have your son screening on?
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: Like I just I mean, oh, I burn.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Let's talk about this scene. But the dramatic scene, Sarah,
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: I think your acting is really good here at seventeen
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: oh three, there's this awesome scene where you and Judy,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: where Judy comes to get you and you're at the
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: soda machine. I think this is a really really good
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: acting on your part.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Was this Was this the first big monologue for you
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: on the show?
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: I thought you were gonna say? Was this the first
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: time that you put in your iPod and listen to
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: Josh Raiden?
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: Oh?
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Is that what you did? Or you're giving Josh Raiden?
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: Was it Josh Raiden? Or was it? Who was it?
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: I will remember, well, don't don't take away her, don't
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: take away her. Josh Raiden plugged Donald.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: Josh Rayden's gotten enough plugs on this show?
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: Is that? Is that? Is that who you used to
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: get to make your eyes? Uh, to make yourself emotional
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: in eyes tear up?
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: Well? I was still young, I mean at that point.
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: Now you know, as you grow older you have many
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: more experiences draw from. But I used to use an
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: iPod and I would play sad music and kind of
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: get into the mode. I don't know then that scene
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: was kind of it was very early on. It was enough.
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: I mean I remember just shooting it and it was
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: was it.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Babies got back. I mean, there's something about the lyrics this.
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: You can see if you look very closely, if you
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: stop freeze the frame, you can see my hips just
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: kind of undulate. My booty's shaken a little bit. Yeah,
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: Josh Raiden, let's give a plug man. He he obviously
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: was a soundtrack to many things. I delivered my children
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: to josh O Raydon.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Sorry, you go if you're gonna, If you're gonna deliver
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: your children, and that's coming up, we recommend you use
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: the musical stylings of Joshua Raidon.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: Josh Raidon sang the song at my wedding. Their first
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: dance was to Josh Raydon and he fucked up the
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: song tremendously, he did. But I love them, Oh my god.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: He didn't even remember the song. I got the video,
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: which got the video?
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: Which which song of it was?
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: It was?
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: It was which song of his?
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: No, it was moon Pours through the Ceiling Tonight and
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: praises us We lie, And it was perfect for the uh,
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: for the moment, the rest of my life, cake of
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: this night. Whoa yeah, and only the heartaches have given
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: me side they bring me to you, right, bring me
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: to you. Fucked it up the whole He fucked up
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: the whole song.
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: Dude, I wish the opposite of a plug.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: No, it was fun, dude, he did it. Listen. It's
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: not every day you get somebody like him to one
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: perform at your wedding, also to do it for free.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: So you know that he also performed at Ellen's wedding.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: I'm sure they paid him. I didn't have to pay
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: him and for that alone, and we thank you. Josh Raydon,
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: you are one of my heroes.
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: Kelly Donald didn't ask me to sing at his wedding.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: By the way, has the worst voice in the world. America.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: Let me tell you something, America and all other nations listening,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: don't ever let Sarah sing.
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: Windows will break, photogs.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: These are what's this, what's happening in my house? The
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: windows going.
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: I was conspicuously absent in the musical episode. And also do.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: You remember when when the when Aryl when Daryl Hannah
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: and splash says her name. That's what happens when Sarah.
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: I guess we haven't covered that yet that you guys
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: didn't ask me to help you record the opening song.
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: Can you imagine?
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: Do you like our song?
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: I love your song?
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Charlie Pooth wrote the music and Donald and I
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: were Donald and I were the lyriss.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: Well we wrote the melody too and then sent it
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: to him. Well the melody is right.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Credit for melody. Melody was us. Charlie Pooth is producer
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: and music writer, right, and you and I are the lyricists.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: But we can also we also need to give a
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: little shout out to sitcom shows from back in the day,
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: like the Jefferson.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Oh yeah, And someone said on Twitter, I thought it
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: was it was right. It said it's a mix between
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: the Brady Bunch theme and the Jeffersons theme.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's exactly what it is.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought that was really perfect. Sarah, do you
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: find yourself singing our theme song when you're in your
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: house in quarantine?
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: It's it's you know, I I've actually learned it. I've
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: got learning the guitar of the ukulelea actually, and I'll
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: I'll send you guys a clip of me singing and
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: you you know, I'll leave it in your hands if
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: you show.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: My girlfriend caught me on the treadmill listening to our
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: theme song and laughed at me, not with me, at me.
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: You're proud of it. You're proud of it.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: Things I noticed about the show, about this show go ahead.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: I had no idea that I bopped that hard in
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: the hallway. And when I say bop, I mean like
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: I had the straight up. My walk is legendary.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Strut is it like a stress?
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: It's like a struck. But it's like so over the top, dude,
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: it's so over the top.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: It's like George Jefferson when he would this is.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: Exactly like George jeffersons. It's like so heavy. It's like, yo, dude,
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: why are you going so hard with that?
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: And that was your inspiration? Do you remember who your
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: inspiration was?
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: It's always Sherman Hemsley, Sherman Hemsley always.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: I wanted to say something about the scene in nineteen
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: oh seven There's the I had this dramatic scene with
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: Catherine Juston and it was the first time I ever
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: had the balls to go to Bill because I thought
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: I did a good job. And then he showed me
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: an edit of it, and he had taken out some
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: of my dramatic pauses. And it was one of the
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: first times in my acting career where I was like,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: I was like, I gotta go talk to him, because
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: he's making me look like a bad actor. He's he's
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: taking out the pauses, like you know, because you know,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: the show had to be cut down to twenty two
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: minutes or something, and I remember Bill going like, dude,
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: there's no time. It's twenty two minutes. There's no time
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: for pauses. There's no time for traumatic pauses. And I
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: think in the end he put he put a little
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: bit back, but it was like it was when she goes,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: are you okay? And then I go, I'm scared. And
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: then when I saw it edited together for the first time,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: I was like, are you okay? I'm scared? And I
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: was like, oh, that makes me look really bad. And
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: this is the thing that actors, I'm sure I know
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: as a director feel all the time. Sometimes you look
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: and go why did you cut me like that? Like
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: on the day, I thought I was doing a much
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: better job. But if you take out that pause and
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: cut to me like like that I don't look as
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: good as I want to be. You know, I'm sure
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: you guys had that feeling throughout the show sometimes.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: Well yeah, you know, you we would tell jokes sometimes
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: and jokes wouldn't make the show, and you know, we'd
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: have moments where we thought, you know, we were crushing
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: it and then only to see you know, the editors
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: and Bill decided to use the reaction shot instead of
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: your actual you know, instead of your before gone right
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: or the joke's just completely gone right.
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I love that. I love that scene that you're
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: talking about, Zac. It was one of my favorite ones
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: in the in the episode when you know, she tells
- 1:11:10Speaker 5: you to go and live your life and you're like,
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: you know, uh huh uh, I'm just turning on a
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: few things and you go up to the thing and
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: you're kind of pretending.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: I don't want to go. And then it's always you know,
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: my father, who passed away recently, always always would reference
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: this moment in Scrubs that he thought it was so
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: incredibly moving, the idea of a of an older woman
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: comforting a young doctor about death, and and he said,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: I just you know, he was He's like, I never
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: seen anything like that before and and and I just
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: watching it this time, I just remember how much he
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: would always reference that because it was so beautiful, that
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: that sentiment that the JD doesn't know how to deal
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: with death yet, but here's this older woman who's ready
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: to go and she's the one comforting him about it.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: I just thought that was beautifully written.
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: Somehow managed to also be funny in parts. That was
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: what I couldn't believe, Like when she's just like everybody dies,
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: No they don't.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: Right, No, they don't right. The Scheiffel to the Miffel Tower.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: The Mindful Tower, the Miffel Tower, about the Minfele Tower.
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: That being said, the whole list thing, especially with the
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: way things are right now, that whole list thing got
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: me to thinking, you know what I mean, I don't
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: have any regrets in my life or anything like that,
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: but there are certain things that I still want to do,
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: you know what I mean. And uh, you know, we're
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: in quarantine and it doesn't seem like, you know, it
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: doesn't feel like we're going to get out of this
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: anytime soon, you know what I mean. Not to sound
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: more but or dark or anything like that, but when
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: JD brings up the list and she's like, I've done
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: all of those things already. It really made me think, like, well,
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: you know, when this is over, I'm gonna make sure
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: that I get out and I live a lot more
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: than I did before, you know what I mean?
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: And well, that's interesting. I mean, this quarantine thing, I agree.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: I think it gives you perspective. And I've just been
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: feeling focusing on gratitude a lot because I just think that,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: like when all this is so insane, and it makes
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: you focus on how lucky we are and what we
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: want to appreciate in life. You know, they just the
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: simple things like being able to go to a restaurant
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: with friends and laugh and have a drink. And I
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: don't know, it's interesting you say that. So have you
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: made a list on or are you making lists of things
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: you want to know?
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: I'm going to start a list. I know. A lot
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: of it has to do with my kids and making
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: sure that they get to experience a lot of the
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: things that I didn't experience when I was a kid,
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: when I was young, you know what I mean. I
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: try to do that now, but I feel like maybe
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: I need to go a little bit overboard and then
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: you know, have my wife tell me we need to
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: dial it back a little bit. We're going too far,
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Like, Uh, there's certain things
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: that my kids have never done that and that's because
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: I don't do it, you know what I mean? And
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: I don't want to do that to them. I want
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: them to have that experience in that adventure.
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: I feel like I feel like it's it's also because
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: we don't know when this is over. We don't know
- 1:13:59Speaker 5: how long we're going to be doing for and it
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: doesn't seem to be short. Obviously it sounds like potentill
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: we have a vaccine. Who knows how long this chunk
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: of our lives is and what it looks like and
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: whether it opens back up. I feel like as impossible
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: it is, it is and has trite as it's like
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: trying to you in the moment and trying to figure
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: out what like the rare times with them that I
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: have now that are so hard to get in the
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: like in the every day think about how much time
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: you spend in the car driving them to activities, doing whatever,
- 1:14:26Speaker 5: and when work takes over and that becomes so all consuming,
- 1:14:29Speaker 5: and I feel like as much of it is that
- 1:14:31Speaker 5: we can squeeze out just here, like just sitting with them.
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: Like I was reading something the other day saying, you know,
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: people are worried about their kids getting behind in education.
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: What if they actually came out ahead? And I thought
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: that was such a cool way to look at it, Like, kids,
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: this is going to form who they are and who
- 1:14:46Speaker 5: they become. And what if they actually start to appreciate
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: the small things that we're starting to appreciate right now
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: instead of just the grind of everyday life. And what
- 1:14:55Speaker 5: if they actually learn to do meaningful chores at home
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: and learn the value in that and learn how to
- 1:15:02Speaker 5: you know, actually be I hear.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: You know. The only thing I worry about with all
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: of that is there's social skills when this is all
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: said and done, you know what I mean, That's the
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: only thing I worry about. But yeah, you know, we
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: got this kid reading, you know, she's on site words
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: and we're trying to get her to read and stuff
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: like that, and we're working with math and all of
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: that stuff. But at the end of the day, it's like,
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: you know, there's something special about being around other children
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: their age to interact with, you know what I mean.
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: It's so true. I know my heartbreaks for only kids.
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: Who are you know, having to go through this right
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: now with no kids to play with. It's really hard.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: The show ends with Hallelujah by John Cale, which has
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: been covered by lots of folks. I thought this was
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: a particularly beautiful rendition, and again I think it was
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: the first real time I noticed the show ending with
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: a sweet, somber, uplifting song in a beautiful way, cutting
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: to the montage, and I got I wrote down, I
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: got goosebumps at twenty fourteen when we all three whip
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: our heads around, yeah, revealing that we've all it's not
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: one in three in this case. The odds have fallen,
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: so we've lost three of three. I got goosebumps up
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: and down my arms at that moment. I thought that
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: was really beautifully done.
- 1:16:17Speaker 5: Absolutely so shocking when that happens, right Like, as a viewer,
- 1:16:20Speaker 5: I think you're not expecting that. You're kind of waiting
- 1:16:22Speaker 5: for that statistic that they set up at the beginning.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: And then we end the show, And this is what
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: I was saying a few episodes before, Sarah, you weren't
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: here for this, but it's really important for doctors to
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: be able to pick themselves back up after something like
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: this happens. And you know, it's also very important that
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: this happens to these young doctors at an early time,
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: so they do know how to set up boundaries and
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: do know how to set up balls to help them
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: be professional. It's tragic that it has to be death
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: that does it, but yeah, you know, to lose someone
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: you care about and then show up the next day
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: at that job, it's very difficult. I can't I can't
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: imagine it. I find it difficult to watch and it's
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: very difficult to experience I would imagine.
- 1:17:06Speaker 5: And that was that, and that piece of it so
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: cool that the show kind of owes that right after
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: with all, you know, Turt going back and introducing himself
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: to the patient, Jad taking the time to go be
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: on the grass, Elliot kind of figuring out how to
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: take charge. And that was kind of cool too. Johnny's
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: conversation with Elliott when he says, you made the right call,
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: you did, and she says, I know, and I don't.
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: I didn't remember that. And when I saw that, I
- 1:17:29Speaker 5: you know, just sort of having her take that confident position.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that was really powerful. I was really powerful I thought, Okay, listen, guys,
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: we did it. We did it. I'm so glad Sarah
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: we had you because we wanted to have you on
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: this one, because we all keep saying, this was a
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: very special episode for all of us, and thank you
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: for for coming on. And I hope you know we're
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: having fun doing this. I hope that Donald and I
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: both hope that you'll come as as as many times
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: as you're willing to and and rewatch the show with us.
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: I loved it. It was so fun, so fun to do.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: So is that a yes?
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: Was that a yes? That was a very non Commis
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: that is that?
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: Is? I'm in you? Just you can know where I am.
- 1:18:05Speaker 5: Guys not doing anything?
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: How do you say? How do you say goodbye? And Canadians?
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: I think it's goodbye? Wait? Is it something like? That's French?
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: That's well, you know there's a lot of them speak
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: French up there.
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: Donald, that's bilingual country here, guys?
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: Is it?
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: Yes? On that note? Donald, if you'll lead us in song?
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: Why god? Donald? Why can't I lead us in song?
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Sorry? You can lead us in song? We will now,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Donald Countison, Please one two? I prefer when you count
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: down like DeBie.
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: Okay, you got big dreams.
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: You take the monologue. This time.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: Fame costs, and right here is where you start paying sweat.
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: Six stories about show we made about a bunch of.
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: Is a stormy next all should know?
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: So gather rad you here, hop gather round you here Hops,
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: but we watch your wiz and
