- 0:39So here are 10 stories that we're following
- 0:41today at Becker's HealthCare.
- 0:44First, oncology's bedrock remains the same.
- 0:47This is a story that comes out of
- 0:49a podcast that we did with doctor Frederick
- 0:51Green, and and doctor Green
- 0:53is one of the key oncologists
- 0:55that was in the world of setting up
- 0:57the staging of cancer. So when you get
- 1:00cancer or someone in your family gets cancer,
- 1:02you learn about stages one, two, three, four
- 1:05with one being
- 1:07the least scary and four being the scariest.
- 1:10And doctor Green himself spent a lot of
- 1:13his career in the middle of developing these
- 1:15standards. It's remarkable to talk to doctor Green.
- 1:18The podcast is at Becker's Health Care. Again,
- 1:21doctor Frederick Green. He's with the Levine Cancer
- 1:24Center, which is part of the Advocate Health
- 1:26System today.
- 1:28Second,
- 1:29US hospitals brace for massive winter storms.
- 1:32That's again a a a story that we're
- 1:33following throughout the country this week.
- 1:36US hospital storm for big storms.
- 1:38Brace for massive storms.
- 1:40Third,
- 1:41Cedars Sinai, it's a 30,000,000
- 1:44gift for a specialized cancer center.
- 1:47Again, what we're against seeing in health care
- 1:49is more and more dollars moving towards big
- 1:52ticket areas like orthopedics,
- 1:54oncology, and heart disease.
- 1:56It seems like when everything new is getting
- 1:58built on a campus, it's often related to
- 2:00these three areas to one of these three
- 2:02areas.
- 2:03Fourth, common spirit health in talks to sell
- 2:07sever their hospitals.
- 2:09Again, an effort by a major system to
- 2:11get their footprint right,
- 2:12and to keep their their their total size
- 2:15in in the right spot and be in
- 2:16markets where they could really be strong.
- 2:20Fifth,
- 2:21Pennsylvania
- 2:22Hospital to reopen
- 2:24with operational discipline under new ownership. And, again,
- 2:27this is the Crozer Chester Health Center,
- 2:30that had closed down, after being bought by
- 2:32a private equity fund. Now a new investors
- 2:34come in, and let's hope they can make
- 2:36this work. We'll see how it goes.
- 2:38Sixth, a discussion about the $50,000,000,000
- 2:41federal funds going to rural hospitals.
- 2:44Rural hospitals
- 2:45assert
- 2:46that they're not listening to any of the
- 2:47recommendations coming from rural hospitals,
- 2:50and we'll see how this all plays out.
- 2:51Again, we'll see if it actually has any
- 2:53impact or positive impact on rural health care.
- 2:56Very tough nut to crack is is essentially
- 2:59we need more doctors and nurses in rural
- 3:01areas, and not enough doctors and nurses wanna
- 3:03move back to rural areas.
- 3:06Seventh,
- 3:07a discussion about how one hospital
- 3:09set a cap,
- 3:10a maximum cap of four to one nurse
- 3:13to patient ratios.
- 3:14And and I love this, not because it's
- 3:18it's
- 3:19it's a sign of the reality of trying
- 3:21to stamp things well with the right level
- 3:24of nursing help, the right level of PA
- 3:26help, the right level of everything help,
- 3:29but not being
- 3:31sort of chasing
- 3:33high staffing
- 3:34ratios,
- 3:35when they don't necessarily make the difference. We
- 3:38all wanna be well staffed enough, but this
- 3:40is basically signing up it's putting a line
- 3:42in the sand that need to hit it
- 3:44hit the right balance,
- 3:46on staffing and and not to sort of,
- 3:49overstaff or hopefully understaff.
- 3:52Eighth, a story about community health systems, and
- 3:54this is similar to the discussion about common
- 3:57spirit health.
- 3:58Community health systems has now shared 41 hospitals
- 4:01since 2020
- 4:02in an effort to get much more,
- 4:07much leaner and get some of their debt
- 4:09paid down.
- 4:11Ninth, one of the huge growth stories over
- 4:13the last ten to twenty years is Prime
- 4:15Healthcare. They're in the process of acquiring their
- 4:18ninth Illinois Hospital, and we cover that at
- 4:20Becker's Healthcare.
- 4:21Finally, tenth is an article by Kristen Kuchno,
- 4:24which which goes through the highest call by
- 4:26different specialties,
- 4:28neurosurgeons at the top of the call list.
- 4:30But, again, a a constant issue now. We're
- 4:32also hearing more and more about smaller and
- 4:34larger surgery centers having to pay subsidies for
- 4:37anesthesia. I know a very different issue than
- 4:39qual, but, again, speaks to the same thing.
- 4:42Shortages of physicians
- 4:44requiring health systems to pay for qual,
- 4:46and all kinds of surgical types of locations
- 4:49having to pay for anesthesia coverage.
- 4:51Again, these are 10 of the stories that
- 4:53we're following
- 4:54this week at Becker's Healthcare. Thank you so
- 4:56much for listening to the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 4:59We'd love your feedback,
- 5:01both on content
- 5:02and on sound quality.
- 5:04I also would love your feedback. My guess
- 5:06is I'm talking a little bit too quickly
- 5:08today. Would love to hear your feedback on
- 5:09all of that. If you're the first person
