Chapter eighteen, in which Phileas Fogg passed partout and fix go each about his
• 0:05
business. The weather was bad during the latter days of the voyage. The
• 0:13
wind, obstinately remaining in the northwest, blew a gale and retarded the steamer.
• 0:19
The rangoon rolled heavily, and the passengers became impatient of the long,
• 0:23
monstrous waves which the wind raised before their path. A sort of tempest arose
• 0:29
on the third of November, the squall knocking the vessel about with fury,
• 0:33
and the waves running high. The rangoon reefed all her sails, and even
• 0:38
the rigging proved too much whistling and shaking amid the squall. The steamer was
• 0:43
forced to proceed slowly, and the captain estimated that she would reach Hong Kong
• 0:47
twenty hours behind time, and more if the storm lasted. Phileas Fogg gazed
• 0:53
at the tempestuous sea, which seem to be struggling especially to delay him.
• 0:59
With his habitual tranquility, he never changed countenance for an instant, though a
• 1:03
delay of twenty hours, by making him too late for the Yokohama boat,
• 1:07
would almost inevitably cause the loss of the wager. But this man of nerve.
• 1:14
Manifested neither impatience nor annoyance. It seemed as if the storm were a
• 1:19
part of his program and had been foreseen. Aouda was amazed to find him
• 1:23
as calm as he had been from the first time she saw him. Fix
• 1:27
did not look at the state of things in the same light. The storm
• 1:32
greatly pleased him. His satisfaction would have been complete had the rangoon been forced
• 1:37
to retreat before the violence of wind and waves. Each delay filled him with
• 1:42
hope, for it became more and more probable that fog would be obliged to
• 1:46
remain some days at Hong Kong. And now the heavens themselves became his allies.
• 1:51
With the gusts and squalls. It mattered not that they made him sea
• 1:56
sick. He made no account of this inconvenience, and whilst his his body
• 2:00
was writhing under their effects, his spirit bounded with hopeful exultation. Passepartout was
• 2:06
enraged beyond expression by the unpropitious weather. Everything had gone so well till now
• 2:13
earth and sea had seen to be had his master's service. Steamers and railways
• 2:17
obeyed him. Wind and steam united to speed his journey. Had the hour
• 2:23
of adversity come past Partout was as much excited as if the twenty thousand pounds
• 2:28
were to come from his own pocket. The storm exasperated him, The gale
• 2:32
made him furious, and he longed to lash the obstinate sea into obedience.
• 2:38
Poor fellow Fix carefully concealed from him his own satisfaction, for had he betrayed
• 2:45
it, Past Partu could scarcely have restrained himself from personal violence. Pastpartu remained
• 2:52
on deck as long as the tempest lasted, being unable to remain quiet below,
• 2:57
and taking it into his head to aid the proput of the ship by
• 3:00
lending a hand with the crew. He overwhelmed the captain, officers and sailors,
• 3:06
who could not help laughing at his impatience. With all sorts of questions.
• 3:12
He wanted to know exactly how long the storm was going to last,
• 3:15
whereupon he was referred to the barometer, which seemed to have no intention of
• 3:20
rising. Passepartout shook it, but with no perceptible effect, for neither shaking
• 3:25
nor maledictions could prevail upon it to change its mind. On the fourth,
• 3:30
however, the sea became more calm and the storm lessened its violence, the
• 3:36
wind veered southward and was once more favorable. Passepartout cleared up with the weather.
• 3:42
Some of the sails were unfurled, and the rangoon resumed its most rapid
• 3:46
speed. The time loss could not, however, be regained. Land was
• 3:51
not signaled until five o'clock in the morning of the sixth. The steamer was
• 3:55
due on the fifth Phileas Fogg was twenty four hours hours behindhand, and the
• 4:00
Yokohama steamer would of course be missed. The pilot went on board at six
• 4:06
and took his place on the bridge to guide the rangoon through the channels to
• 4:10
the port of Hong Kong. Passepartout longed to ask him if the steamer had
• 4:15
left for Yokohama, but he dared not, for he wished to preserve the
• 4:18
spark of hope, which still remained till the last moment he had confided his
• 4:25
anxiety to fix who The sly rascal tried to console him by saying that mister
• 4:30
Fogg would be in time if he took the next boat, but this only
• 4:34
put Passepartout in a passion. Mister Fogg, bolder than his servant, did
• 4:40
not hesitate to approach the pilot, and tranquility asked him if he knew when
• 4:44
a steamer would leave Hong Kong for Yokohama at high tide tomorrow morning, answered
• 4:51
the pilot, Ah, said mister Fogg, without betraying any astonishment. Passepartout,
• 4:59
who heard what pas As, would willingly have embraced the pilot, while
• 5:01
fix would have been glad to twist his neck. What is the steamer's name,
• 5:08
asked mister Fogg. The carnatic ought she not have gone yesterday? Yes,
• 5:15
sir, but they had to repair one of her boilers, and so
• 5:18
her departure was postponed till tomorrow. Thank you, returned mister Fogg, Descending
• 5:26
mathematically to the saloon. Passepartout clasped the pilot's hand and shook it heartily in
• 5:31
his delight, exclaiming, Pilot, you are the best of good fellows.
• 5:38
The pilot probably does not know to this day why his responses won him this
• 5:43
enthusiastic greeting. He remounted the bridge and guided the steamer through the flotilla of
• 5:47
junks, tankas, and fishing boats which crowded the harbor of Hong Kong.
• 5:54
At one o'clock the Rangoon was at the quay and the passengers were going ashore.
• 6:00
Chance had strangely favored Phileas Fogg, for had not the Carnatic been forced
• 6:04
to lie over for repairing her boilers, she would have left on the sixth
• 6:09
of November, and the passengers for Japan would have been obliged to wait for
• 6:12
a week the sailing of the next steamer. Mister Fogg was, it is
• 6:16
true, twenty four hours behind his time, but this could not seriously imperil
• 6:21
the remainder of his tour. The steamer which crossed the Pacific from Yokohama to
• 6:28
San Francisco made a direct connection with that from Hong Kong, and it could
• 6:32
not sail until the latter reached Yokohama. And if mister Fogg was twenty four
• 6:36
hours late on reaching Yokohama, this time would no doubt be easily regained in
• 6:42
the voyage of twenty two days across the Pacific. He found himself then about
• 6:46
twenty four hours behindhand. Thirty five days after leaving London, the Carnatic was
• 6:54
announced to leave Hong Kong at five the next morning. Mister Fogg had sixteen
• 6:58
hours in which to attend to his business there, which was to deposit Aouda
• 7:02
safely with her wealthy relative. On landing, he conducted her to a palanquin
• 7:08
in which they repaired to the Club Hotel. A room was engaged for the
• 7:13
young woman, and mister Fogg, after seeing that she wanted for nothing,
• 7:16
set out in search of her cousin Gigi. He instructed passepartout to remain at
• 7:23
the hotel until his return, that Aouda might not be left entirely alone.
• 7:29
Mister Fogg repaired to the exchange, where he did not doubt everyone would know
• 7:33
so wealthy and considerable a personage as the Parsi merchant. Meeting a broker,
• 7:39
he made the inquiry to learn that Jiji had left China two years before,
• 7:44
and, retiring from business with an immense fortune, had taken up his residence
• 7:48
in Europe, in Holland. The broker thought with the merchants of which country
• 7:54
he had principally traded Phileas Fogg returned to the hotel, begged a moment's come
• 8:00
conversation with Aouda, and without more ado apprized her that Jiji was no longer
• 8:05
at Hong Kong, but probably in Holland. Aouda at first said nothing.
• 8:11
She passed her hand across her forehead and reflected a few moments. Then,
• 8:15
in her sweet, soft voice, she said, what ought I to do?
• 8:20
Mister Fogg? It is very simple, responded the gentleman, go on
• 8:26
to Europe, but I cannot intrude. You do not intrude, nor do
• 8:31
you in the least embarrass my project. Passepartout. Messieurs go to the Carnatic
• 8:39
and engage three cabins. Passepartout, delighted that the young woman who was very
• 8:45
gracious to him was going to continue the journey with them, went off at
• 8:48
a brisk gait to obey his master's order. End of chapter
