• 2:04
[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to be talking about the full arc of her career going into that from the monster's success of Wilson Phillips and the harmonies that defined a generation to the overlook gems like shadows and light their second record and the criminally underrated album they did after that when called the Wilson's
• 2:19
[SPEAKER_01]: with her sister Wendy and Dad Bryan, which I'm sure rocked much harder than anyone expected at the time.
• 2:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Connie's going to open up about mental health advocacy, sobriety, grief, OCD, motherhood, wiping honest is always mattered more than being polished.
• 2:35
[SPEAKER_01]: There's also plenty of love for studio life, unreleased, vault material, yes, or the Christmas records, and the idea that history might finally catch up with the albums that slipped to the cracks the first time,
• 2:46
[SPEAKER_01]: all that a more as we talk she rocks awards it's Kyle Meredith with carney Wilson.
• 2:53
  [SPEAKER_03]: Hi, Kyle.
• 2:54
  [SPEAKER_03]: How are you?
• 2:55
[SPEAKER_03]: I've got a very busy house today.
• 2:57
[SPEAKER_01]: You got a new cat.
• 2:59
  [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, God.
• 2:59
  [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you saw.
• 3:00
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
• 3:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: Just now.
• 3:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: Just a second ago I checked.
• 3:03
  [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah.
• 3:04
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
• 3:05
[SPEAKER_03]: I haven't had a cat since I was Jesus maybe seven or eight years old.
• 3:11
  [SPEAKER_01]: So this is
• 3:12
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I'm actually petrified.
• 3:14
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they mostly take care of themselves, the cats.
• 3:17
[SPEAKER_03]: I know it's just that it's hard to explain that the household is, my household is like loud and crazy and there's a million things happening every minute and so you know we have this crazy pug Frankie and right now I was very concerned about this interview and in fact we might hear
• 3:47
[SPEAKER_03]: it's like it's really nuts right now.
• 3:50
[SPEAKER_03]: So the dog has been off the chain barking today and I was going to take my laptop and go in my car but I think I think we'll be okay.
• 3:57
  [SPEAKER_01]: We'll be fine.
• 3:58
[SPEAKER_01]: You know if anything that the last six years has proven with the zoom rising the way it has is uh everybody has dogs and we love when we hear we see them in interviews.
• 4:06
  [SPEAKER_01]: So
• 4:07
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's like, for home, and we're just talking, right?
• 4:09
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.
• 4:10
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.
• 4:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let's, let's roll right into this then, because I know one of the big things we're talking about is you're being honored in the, the She Rocks Awards, 14th year for the She Rocks Awards.
• 4:22
  [SPEAKER_01]: So congratulations first.
• 4:24
  [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
• 4:24
  [SPEAKER_03]: I know, I'm very excited.
• 4:26
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm actually really nervous about it.
• 4:29
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I think for me, I'm pretty humble, you know,
• 4:36
[SPEAKER_03]: and so I'm actually kind of like embarrassed.
• 4:38
[SPEAKER_03]: I guess it's just like a weird thing like therapy like do I really deserve something like this?
• 4:43
[SPEAKER_03]: It's layered, you know, I kind of think but but I'm embracing it and I'm proud and I'm really happy and my family will be there.
• 4:52
[SPEAKER_03]: My kids, my husband, my mom, her, her husband, my stepdad.
• 4:56
  [SPEAKER_03]: It's nice.
• 4:56
[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be great and I'm with amazing company.
• 5:00
  [SPEAKER_03]: really great women.
• 5:02
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I, I was, I don't know all of them, but I know some of them.
• 5:07
[SPEAKER_03]: And, um, yeah, it's like, we're just like, I think we all share a sort of like that we're driven.
• 5:14
[SPEAKER_03]: It's not that we want to make an imprint, but we want to influence.
• 5:19
[SPEAKER_03]: especially women, to just, you know, that they don't have to hold back and even their like desires or like, you know, goals, you know, that we can do whatever the fuck we want, you know?
• 5:31
[SPEAKER_01]: That's, you've been such a voice for that for, I think, your entire career.
• 5:35
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, obviously, we got to know you, you know, with the music and Wilson Films, but everything that came after that, you know, as I,
• 5:42
[SPEAKER_01]: started to think about before we talked about it's like that's everything that comes to mind and and I think in the past handful of years you've talked a lot about what I'm looking at my list here mental health, sobriety, women's wellness like this has always been part of your conversation right?
• 5:56
[SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely, I've very been an open book, I've never written books you know, but it's um I don't know there's just something kind of in me that it's hard for me to keep anything inside really that's what it comes down to so like I have to release
• 6:11
[SPEAKER_03]: creativity, you have to release feelings, you know emotions, and then there's that artistic side of me that loves to create too, you know, and that's come, that's come through in music, and cooking and baking, and
• 6:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Being a mom and just kind of taking on anything that I really want to do But it doesn't mean that like I haven't had like really big challenges, you know, so So being really open about all of it, whatever I'm going to I always say like I am where I am when I'm there I know that's weird.
• 6:46
  [SPEAKER_03]: It's that's really dumb.
• 6:47
[SPEAKER_03]: I maybe it sounds dumb, but like you go there.
• 6:50
  [SPEAKER_03]: You are
• 6:50
[SPEAKER_03]: There you are, exactly the same thing, so it's like, I think, where are my feet, you know, because it's very, it can be very complicated to say, where's my head at right now?
• 6:59
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, Jesus, you know, you three, you know, hour to hour, something can happen in this world because life is in session.
• 7:07
[SPEAKER_03]: that will like change or alter your perception with stuff, you know what I mean?
• 7:10
[SPEAKER_03]: So like I go where am I feet right now?
• 7:12
[SPEAKER_03]: And then let my head follow because my head gets crazy.
• 7:18
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, my alcoholism, my you know, all my anxiety and my OCD, this is where it lives, you know, because my heart is good.
• 7:27
[SPEAKER_03]: We know most of our hearts are good, but it's just like I try my models always been one day at a time and I think I've lived that way even before I got sober.
• 7:37
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, which I was thinking back, you know, the idea of talking about mental health in music has changed so much, and I said more than music in entertainment in just public awareness, I guess.
• 7:52
[SPEAKER_01]: I was remembering an interview I did with Anne Wilson of heart, and she was like, you know, in the 70s, we didn't say that at all, we just drink through it.
• 8:01
[SPEAKER_01]: you know, you weren't allowed to.
• 8:03
[SPEAKER_01]: And even in the 90s, you know, when you were breaking out, like people were starting to figure it out, but the conversation wasn't exactly there.
• 8:12
[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe in the past, what, 10 or 15 years, like that's my perception.
• 8:16
[SPEAKER_01]: You've been on the front into that.
• 8:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Is that sort of the trajectory that you've seen?
• 8:21
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, for sure.
• 8:22
[SPEAKER_03]: Things have really changed, you know?
• 8:24
  [SPEAKER_03]: And I like,
• 8:26
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I think even since 2020 when when COVID happened, I think since then it's even like we've gone like more in the fast lane about almost, I think hopefully we're trying to erase the stigma around mental health because there is that sort of that stigma and that sort of like negative cloud that just like.
• 8:49
  [SPEAKER_03]: I think it's all fear-based, that's my opinion.
• 8:52
[SPEAKER_03]: I think when people don't want to talk about mental health or they, you know, they avoid it or whatever or they spin it in another way, sorry for the dings I'm getting taxed.
• 9:01
[SPEAKER_03]: I think when people like, when they try to avoid talking about mental health, it's the underlying feeling or probably is, is probably fear because we either know someone that's struggling and it hurts to see them struggle or we're struggling ourselves, but we don't know how to say it.
• 9:18
[SPEAKER_03]: and, you know, or ask for help.
• 9:21
[SPEAKER_03]: So like, we can't, the brain is so freaking complex that like, no matter how much research we do, and I'm not a doctor or whatever, but it's like, we can sit there and like analyze and, and, you know, all these doctors and all the books written, all the research and all the data and all that stuff, it just comes down to like, we're humans and we feel shit and we feel stuff and we have to
• 9:46
[SPEAKER_03]: deal with it on a daily basis and some people are wired a little different and like they don't get enough dopamine or they're certain something's not connecting and they need more help.
• 9:57
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's like I've always felt like don't ever be ashamed to say, you know, I either feel different or I know I'm different or whatever,
• 10:06
[SPEAKER_03]: And if I'm feeling less than or anxious or sad and I don't know why, you know, it's okay to look into it and get help.
• 10:17
[SPEAKER_03]: So like that's that's that's been my this last year, you know, since I started a new campaign,
• 10:24
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, um, with, uh, neurocran biosciences, I'm a paid spokesperson for them.
• 10:31
[SPEAKER_03]: But I am an, I'm a mental health advocate for the rest of my life.
• 10:34
[SPEAKER_03]: Because I've always shared about it.
• 10:36
[SPEAKER_03]: So like, if it's postpartum, if it's anxiety, I mean, I am terrible OCD.
• 10:41
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if anyone knows that.
• 10:42
[SPEAKER_03]: But like, you know, like, stupid things are not stupid things.
• 10:45
  [SPEAKER_03]: But silly things.
• 10:47
[SPEAKER_03]: Like when I take my toilet paper roll, I count one, two, three, four.
• 10:51
[SPEAKER_03]: I have OCD, so like it's okay, I know I have it.
• 10:56
[SPEAKER_03]: And you know, somebody's a wake up and I'm like, yay, let's go get the day and somebody's a wake up and I'm like, I don't wanna get out of bed.
• 11:03
[SPEAKER_03]: I just wanna stay out of the covers.
• 11:05
  [SPEAKER_03]: So,
• 11:06
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, the other thing I've been really paying attention to the last year is that when my dad passed away, I felt so much sadness that I've never experienced before.
• 11:18
[SPEAKER_03]: So it brought me to like this fairy, not a, not a dark place, but a sad sad place.
• 11:26
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think there's a difference between that really hardcore oppression where people feel like I don't want to be here anymore.
• 11:33
  [SPEAKER_03]: That's so, so heavy-duty and hardcore.
• 11:35
  [SPEAKER_03]: I didn't feel that.
• 11:36
[SPEAKER_03]: But I felt such sadness, like a whole, like I've never felt.
• 11:42
[SPEAKER_03]: So I thought, you know, this is, it's unbelievably perfect that this is the year that I signed on to start this connecting with
• 11:56
[SPEAKER_03]: and a condition that is associated with taking those anti-psychotics called T.D.
• 12:03
[SPEAKER_03]: And Tardide Diskinesia is a different conversation, but it is actually under the same umbrella, because it all starts with mental health.
• 12:10
[SPEAKER_03]: So I think that from this point forward, that's going to be in the forefront, because as we get older, time is more precious.
• 12:21
[SPEAKER_03]: We want to make the most of things.
• 12:23
  [SPEAKER_03]: We have more boundaries.
• 12:25
[SPEAKER_03]: have, you know, less tolerance.
• 12:28
[SPEAKER_03]: We, you know, we know what we want.
• 12:31
  [SPEAKER_03]: And that's a positive thing.
• 12:33
  [SPEAKER_03]: That's positive thing.
• 12:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll be right back right after this.
• 12:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back, it's Kyle, Meredith with Carny Wilson.
• 12:41
[SPEAKER_01]: And my guess even from the tone that you're saying this is, this has been the helpful thing to bring you out of that darker place that you're in.
• 12:50
  [SPEAKER_03]: big time, big time.
• 12:52
[SPEAKER_03]: Because I've always worn my heart right here, and people know what I'm going to do and that started with music, writing about young love and then it went to postpartum depression to drug addiction, alcohol addiction, motherhood, weight, you know.
• 13:11
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it's just been an open book, but that's cool, that's cool because I feel very blessed.
• 13:20
[SPEAKER_03]: who shares love a music, he's funny, he's smart, he's patient with me because I'm a handful, you know, I'm really controlling, like really micromanaging and it drives them freaking crazy.
• 13:37
[SPEAKER_03]: but you know he's like a jazz musician so he's always in his head he's always playing the guitar he's got 50 notes in his head you know but like it's good because we balance each other out and I have two great kids and they want they make me want to be a better person you know and and guide for them
• 13:56
[SPEAKER_03]: you know, because when you have kids and not everyone feels this way, but like they're my life, you know, I would do anything for them.
• 14:04
[SPEAKER_03]: So they see me fail, they see me yell, they see me make mistakes, they see me fuck up every day.
• 14:09
[SPEAKER_03]: But like to just like talk openly with them and laugh and sing and share stuff ups and downs is what it's all about.
• 14:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you and your guy, do you write together?
• 14:21
[SPEAKER_03]: We have, yeah, but we start fighting.
• 14:25
[SPEAKER_03]: The minute we start, we start fighting.
• 14:28
[SPEAKER_03]: We are going to get it.
• 14:29
  [SPEAKER_03]: It's totally, it's so funny.
• 14:33
[SPEAKER_03]: We kind of gave up the writing together.
• 14:34
[SPEAKER_03]: And also Rob is more of a solo writer.
• 14:37
  [SPEAKER_03]: He does collaborate.
• 14:38
  [SPEAKER_03]: He is a great co-writer.
• 14:40
[SPEAKER_03]: And he has written some nice quote, quote, you know.
• 14:42
[SPEAKER_03]: He's a current in some great songs, but he's he's better on his own and I, you know, I I like to collaborate But when we go in the studio, I mean he's produced Wilson Phillips records.
• 14:53
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean he's really really gifted We just oh my god.
• 14:59
[SPEAKER_03]: He gets impatient and then I tend to take a long time with my vocals
• 15:06
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not a quick, you know, I'm not quick in the studio and I think he gets impatient when we start fighting and it just gets funny, it just gets funny because we're just like, oh my god, we're, you know, I'm almost surprised by that because your vocals do sound really natural.
• 15:21
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, well, you know, it's kind of like taking a selfie if you can compare that.
• 15:26
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, it's kind of like a lot of a lot of tries and then I get the work where I'm like, okay, you know, my nose doesn't look too big or my, you know, you can't see the hair on my chin or whatever that is, you know, so we try, but I honestly, I'm just getting so less and less.
• 15:44
[SPEAKER_03]: I just care less and less about that stuff, and I still do, you know, you want to presentable, you know, and I have makeup on today for this interview, and I'm going to a party tonight, you know, so I put a paint of face, and any feel good, but, you know, it doesn't mean that doesn't define anyone, I don't think.
• 15:58
[SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, it depends on where you live to.
• 16:01
[SPEAKER_03]: I live in LA where everyone's like, it's like plasticy and Hollywood,
• 16:07
[SPEAKER_03]: you know your car as you drive and Robin I've really talked about and we're very serious about moving to Pennsylvania to like new yeah we look to property a new home and we've just fell in love with that and it's like you know when you go there you feel like the big brick off your shoulders and you feel like you don't want to pay attention to stuff like that.
• 16:26
[SPEAKER_03]: you're just appreciating the nature and, you know, my dream would be like retiring from everything.
• 16:34
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, not everything, but sort of just chilling out a little more and like open a bakery, you know, in the town of Newtown or New Hope and really, I mean, I-
• 16:45
[SPEAKER_03]: That's my passion and my love.
• 16:47
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, all in the nose about new hope, you know, that's just, it's just, it's just, I believe in that you're right there.
• 16:53
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 16:54
[SPEAKER_01]: And we've heard about, you know, that's side of it.
• 16:56
[SPEAKER_01]: But what is, what does that mean for music these days?
• 16:59
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, I know there's the career that can always be there, right?
• 17:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, like Wilson Phillips does shows every now and then still.
• 17:08
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, of course.
• 17:09
[SPEAKER_01]: And that can be, like, I know that can be there because
• 17:12
[SPEAKER_03]: if nothing else is a money generator but it's a connection to fans and all that stuff but like how much of that in your life right now is actually a driving force the music side well it's it's i would say it's a good you know 30% or 40% of my my schedule is going out and doing the show because it's basically one show a month so i mean it it fluctuates anywhere from like seven to 14 shows a year
• 17:39
[SPEAKER_03]: but it just depends, you know, sometimes out these these private gigs come in like next year we're going to Neckor Island for a private gig, you know, and then then we're doing different like track shows or band shows or those festivals and fares and the casinos are always great.
• 17:54
[SPEAKER_03]: We just got a gig with Richard Marks, you know, at Thunder Valley casino in Sacramento, we've played there four times already.
• 18:01
[SPEAKER_03]: So it's like that, that is such a great joy.
• 18:06
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, 10 days after Dad passed away, we were on the stage, and we decided to do that show because we thought, you know, he would want us to do it, and we cried the entire show, and so did the audience.
• 18:20
  [SPEAKER_03]: Never, ever forget it.
• 18:22
[SPEAKER_03]: It was actually one of the smallest venues that we played in a long time.
• 18:26
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think it was, to happen that way, naturally, because we got, I mean, everybody stood up the whole time.
• 18:31
[SPEAKER_03]: and everybody was nobody would had a dry eye.
• 18:34
[SPEAKER_03]: We were all especially when we did all the Beach Boy songs.
• 18:38
  [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my God.
• 18:39
[SPEAKER_03]: But you know, so I hope it remains a good chunk of my life forever.
• 18:45
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think it's something we can do forever.
• 18:46
[SPEAKER_03]: And as long as the fans want to come see us, then we will be there.
• 18:50
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think the music, I think our songs are about love usually and the harmonies are beautiful.
• 18:57
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think we sound pretty good.
• 18:59
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, we sing live, we have a funny show, there's a lot of funny banter or lifelong friends and it's my sister too, so it's entertaining.
• 19:09
[SPEAKER_03]: So as long as they come, what will be there?
• 19:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And you won't keep it interesting.
• 19:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Like I was looking at some of the set lists.
• 19:13
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was, I think I was surprised how often you all or just switch up the set lists.
• 19:18
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, sometimes show by show by show.
• 19:20
[SPEAKER_01]: And I only say that because when you're talking about once a month or something, like,
• 19:25
[SPEAKER_01]: I would think it feels like restarting the machine every single time in a way like that.
• 19:31
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but when you do it for like 16 years, like we've been doing it now, what we've kind of reunited and got back into doing dates, doing concerts, it's just pretty automatic.
• 19:44
[SPEAKER_03]: And when you're in a group, it's like there's three of us.
• 19:47
[SPEAKER_03]: We all have to agree.
• 19:49
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm always the one that wants to put fresh music in.
• 19:52
[SPEAKER_03]: I want to get more music from shadows and light or second album.
• 19:55
[SPEAKER_03]: I want to do more obscure songs or the B-sides,
• 20:00
[SPEAKER_03]: And, and my bandmates just give me a shift for it.
• 20:04
[SPEAKER_03]: They just don't want to do it.
• 20:05
[SPEAKER_03]: So it's like, ah, I get so annoyed.
• 20:08
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'm like, can we just, so we have, we have songs that we alternate depending on the venue depending on the set length.
• 20:16
[SPEAKER_03]: But um, I think it's good to keep it fresh.
• 20:20
[SPEAKER_03]: We'll always do the hits.
• 20:21
[SPEAKER_03]: We'll always do some of the beach boys and mamas and papas.
• 20:24
[SPEAKER_03]: We enjoy it and so does the audience.
• 20:26
[SPEAKER_03]: And it depends on who's coming to the show.
• 20:28
  [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that's what's kind of cool too.
• 20:30
[SPEAKER_03]: We have the sort of the bridesmaids, younger crowd that come that are like really big hold on.
• 20:37
[SPEAKER_03]: And then you've got the other people who've been fans for a long time.
• 20:40
[SPEAKER_03]: that really know all the material and seeing every word to release me and you're in love and impulsive and dream is still alive.
• 20:46
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, they, and you won't see me cry.
• 20:48
  [SPEAKER_03]: They know these songs.
• 20:49
[SPEAKER_03]: So it depends on, depends on the venue and who's in the audience.
• 20:54
[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll be right back right after this.
• 20:57
  [SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back, it's Kyle.
• 20:58
  [SPEAKER_01]: Meredith with Carney Wilson.
• 21:00
[SPEAKER_01]: because you're right, with with with with the shadows in light because they're like I hear you in all the way from New York, and then I had not listened to the Wilson's album until this week.
• 21:12
  [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my god.
• 21:13
[SPEAKER_01]: I go and listen to that and Carnit, let me tell you.
• 21:15
[SPEAKER_01]: I God, it's something paraphrase your dad, right?
• 21:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: When I say that's not a good record, that's a great record.
• 21:22
  [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
• 21:23
[SPEAKER_01]: it's so like it there are moments there are moments when it's especially in this late nineties more rock sound like hearing you guys rock i mean i'm thinking like july and i had filled in this fair there's a little bit of lathe who's at a hops in there and it's here a king writing for it you know it's like what an incredible album this is
• 21:42
[SPEAKER_03]: Isn't it, thank you, and isn't it sad that, you know, it just, these artists, we, you know, we put our poorer hearts and souls into it, we venture out, you know, we have a song on there called I hate your face and it's a really cool record about past lives and like you would never know that and like, you know, we worked with great people, they steward our father Cliff Magnus, a great writer, you know, and like,
• 22:09
  [SPEAKER_03]: Nobody heard it.
• 22:11
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think it's some of our best work.
• 22:13
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that album is so special to me.
• 22:17
[SPEAKER_03]: And I, you know, what I think we did, we did a hate your face and concert once or twice.
• 22:22
[SPEAKER_03]: We did a beautiful song called Not Your Average Girl.
• 22:25
[SPEAKER_03]: I want, I want to do more of the Wilson's live.
• 22:30
[SPEAKER_03]: And we do Monday without you, the Carol King song that she co-wrote.
• 22:35
  [SPEAKER_03]: And that's a lot of fun.
• 22:35
  [SPEAKER_03]: And sometimes Al Jardine,
• 22:37
[SPEAKER_03]: picks up some of the parts that our dad sang, you know what we made a video for that song and and we even I remember when that came out when the album came out we went on Rosie O'Donnell's talk show you know and we sang that song we made a adorable music video with our dad and so these are really treasured memories not just because we worked with our father that was amazing and you know that that was the first time I ever got to write with him and um that and so it's that record
• 23:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that needs some kind of, it needs a big spotlight put on it right now because, you know, things get lost in the moment, right?
• 23:15
[SPEAKER_01]: And then history kind of
• 23:17
[SPEAKER_01]: brings this stuff back to the top to stuff that we might have missed.
• 23:20
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that happens all the time.
• 23:22
[SPEAKER_01]: As critical evaluation, et cetera, et cetera, like somebody and let me be a part of that with this interview, too, because people really need to go back and check this out and get a record-label to remaster it and dig out whatever's in the vaults and 30 cubs coming 30th anniversary.
• 23:42
[SPEAKER_03]: Listen, you're right, and you just never know.
• 23:45
  [SPEAKER_03]: You never know.
• 23:46
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I'm always thinking like that, you know, I'll be watching a TV show in a commercial come on, and I'll be like, you know, I feel like, there's a song called Good About You that's, and there's a course, and it says, I wanna wear a black, because it makes me feel good.
• 24:03
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, I want to be brave because I know that I should and I want to feel good about you and I swear to God I hear it on a target commercial.
• 24:11
[SPEAKER_03]: I've always heard this this chorus on For a target commercial and I don't know why so like that's part of like that brings us back to the beginning of the interview Like we're like if you if you have an instinct about something You know there's no reason why you can't follow through with an idea and you just never know what will happen
• 24:31
[SPEAKER_01]: with a record like that, and maybe this goes with all your, like, like, do you all own the mask?
• 24:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, is that to someone own that or is that you all?
• 24:39
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, I have to go dig back for that one.
• 24:41
[SPEAKER_03]: That was a polygram record and I think she's just sitting dormant there.
• 24:48
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't even know I'd have to go see.
• 24:50
[SPEAKER_03]: And after a certain amount of years, the publishing comes back.
• 24:54
[SPEAKER_03]: If no one's on that, I mean, that takes a little bit of digging and you know, things have changed.
• 24:59
[SPEAKER_03]: Now, labels have merged together.
• 25:03
  [SPEAKER_03]: So I don't know.
• 25:05
[SPEAKER_03]: I think it might be worth looking into.
• 25:08
[SPEAKER_03]: And then, you know, you have like, Wendy and my Christmas album, Hay Santa.
• 25:13
[SPEAKER_03]: they play every year and is one of my favorite Christmas albums that thing cost almost a million dollars to make.
• 25:21
[SPEAKER_03]: We had real strings, we had the orchestra, we had killer players on there, all the best players, you know, and it was an SBK release and when Charles Coffman was alive, he was like, you know, we're going to make this a great Christmas record and Wendy and I wrote
• 25:43
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it's a, it's a great record, Uncle Carl sang on a beach by Carl Wilson sang on it.
• 25:48
[SPEAKER_03]: And I, I'm just so proud of that record, too.
• 25:51
  [SPEAKER_03]: That's a great Christmas record.
• 25:53
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm very proud of the work that I've done, you know?
• 25:55
[SPEAKER_01]: As you should be, as people are awarding you for, and the industry, right?
• 25:59
  [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there's a reason for this.
• 26:00
[SPEAKER_03]: I know, I, I know, it's just kind of like I just do what I do because I love what I do, and then like getting in a word is lovely, but, you know, it's, it's,
• 26:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, is there, do you have much, like, is there much in the vault?
• 26:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: Unreleased stuff?
• 26:15
  [SPEAKER_03]: There's there's there's stuff in the vault.
• 26:17
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, um, when we got back together The three of us try and Wendy and I we spent like I'm gonna say about four years or maybe three years writing songs with a bunch of writers everyone from the co and and their names are like escaping me But like some of the new kids on the blockwork co writers in sink writers big Oh god, who wrote um
• 26:45
[SPEAKER_03]: the gods on what if God was one of us, one of us, I was at Marker.
• 26:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Show me, yeah, with with Joan.
• 26:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I forgot the name.
• 26:52
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I knew that one time as well.
• 26:54
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, all right, I know it's so we forget everything now, but like we wrote with a bunch of great writers, our managers were like, let's get you guys together with great writers and see what comes out of it and we did write some killer songs and I have cassettes, I have CDs, I have all of them.
• 27:13
[SPEAKER_03]: And there are, I think there's some hit records there, but even if we weren't even thinking like that, just a compilation of them and making another record, I'm still pushing for us to make another record.
• 27:25
  [SPEAKER_03]: I'm still doing it.
• 27:26
[SPEAKER_03]: And our favorite place to be is in the studio.
• 27:28
[SPEAKER_03]: We like the stage, but the best place is the studio.
• 27:32
[SPEAKER_01]: It would seem like if the best place in the favorite place to be is the studio.
• 27:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Why is it so hard?
• 27:39
[SPEAKER_03]: like nine children between us, you know, we don't live in the same place, you know, Chinese was back and forth LA, Santa Barbara, Wendy's here with me, but it's just like, and I'm usually doing five jobs at once.
• 27:53
[SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, record, it's a big commitment to right, it's a big commitment to record, who's going to do it.
• 27:59
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, we've talked about, we've come close to signing new record deals, we did with Sony, we did make it record,
• 28:08
[SPEAKER_01]: well the bar parents music and our in a Christmas album but Jesus the last time we released a record it was 2011 or 2014 something like that so it's time well he like it's even if it's just in the mean time digging into that vault and saying well you know here's a compilation of unreleased stuff you know I think a lot of fans would be I would be into that you know I love that stuff and there's forgiveness in that too you know if you say oh these are demos
• 28:33
[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, okay, these are most, you know, like, that's an automatically, I mean, usually expectations are exceeded anyway, you know, like that sounds way, but it's a reason why demo light is exists.
• 28:43
[SPEAKER_01]: We hear the song was like, that's perfect.
• 28:45
[SPEAKER_01]: And the artist goes, it's not done yet, and we're like, no, it's perfect.
• 28:48
  [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I know, I know.
• 28:49
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think of like, all the, I mean, not that we can compare ourselves to Whitney Houston, but like, I will always love you.
• 28:55
[SPEAKER_03]: I think that was the demo that they did.
• 28:57
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, and I know there are many artists.
• 29:00
[SPEAKER_03]: My Michael Jackson was famous for just doing a just a, just take a mix after mix after mix.
• 29:08
[SPEAKER_03]: And I know this for a fact because Glenn Ballard, who wrote, quote, man in the mirror, told us how he recorded.
• 29:15
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm very obsessed with Michael Jackson's music.
• 29:17
[SPEAKER_03]: I always happen, really obsessed with every album, every record.
• 29:22
[SPEAKER_03]: his tracks like blow my mind and his musicality and the way he's saying at the way he wrote and the production of it I think is just incredible.
• 29:33
[SPEAKER_03]: So I was very curious about that and I asked those questions how did he work like that and Glenn would say to me you have no idea that's why it was two or three years between records and he would sit there and do he would have like 19 mixes for each song because in one song the snaps were louder in one song the horns were
• 29:51
[SPEAKER_03]: in one song he had weird humming that he did and you know when you would slap his leg you know for for for for different percussion sounds.
• 29:59
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean he was incredibly musical so I love it when sometimes your best take is your first.
• 30:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Sure and and to to you know co-sign on that too it must have worked because nobody nobody can touch that those songs
• 30:19
[SPEAKER_03]: like nobody's been able to to hit that you know I've listened to Billy Jean like five thousand fucking times you know um and I just can't believe just the way that that basis and the way it starts and just that the grew of it and and the way the strings come in I don't know I it just a Quincy you know for all of his help so I got of course and I'll never forget when he did
• 30:48
[SPEAKER_03]: What was that garden or something, my secret garden or something like that, he brought us, we were recording, I think it was shadows and light and he was in the same studio in another room and Glenn was friends with him because he worked with him on man in the mirror.
• 31:04
[SPEAKER_03]: And so he was like, do you want to come here when I'm working on?
• 31:07
  [SPEAKER_03]: I was dying.
• 31:08
  [SPEAKER_03]: I was dying.
• 31:09
[SPEAKER_03]: So he went in and I'm telling you that it was the loudest playback,
• 31:15
[SPEAKER_03]: So in the studio, when they would, he would say, okay, listen to this, he'd press play and you'd have these big speakers.
• 31:21
[SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes the producers or make sure they'll play you on the board, there'd be two speakers up here, and they're smaller, and then there's the bigger ones in the room.
• 31:40
[SPEAKER_03]: and it was crazy but we heard this and it was a song with Sayida Garrett who I love and it was never forget watching Quincy like inaction.
• 31:51
  [SPEAKER_01]: It was the best.
• 31:52
[SPEAKER_01]: I bet I mean when you talk about musical minds you know what I got was capable of and it's taken with Michael in two musical minds and then you get you know the greatest stuff of of the 80s and you know the 70s as well so yeah.
• 32:07
  [SPEAKER_01]: insane.
• 32:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm right there with you on that one.
• 32:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Let me bring it back really quick again to congratulate you though on all of your accomplishments because because it's certainly much like myself you have been part of the soundtrack to very important moments of all of our lives and that's certainly of mine and I certainly appreciate that.
• 32:26
[SPEAKER_01]: So all deserved praise your way for what's coming.
• 32:30
[SPEAKER_03]: You're so sweet, thank you, thank you.
• 32:33
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm grateful, got to stay humble, man.
• 32:37
[SPEAKER_03]: Got to stay humble, you know?
• 32:38
  [SPEAKER_03]: It's a gift, it's all blessing.
