- 0:03hey everyone
- 0:03welcome back to the Eye Believe Podcast
- 0:06today our guest is Kelly Tait with Bee Organized
- 0:09and we're gonna talk a little bit about
- 0:10getting your life organized
- 0:12when you're going through the craziness of cancer
- 0:14so welcome Kelly
- 0:15thank you
- 0:17so tell us a little bit about yourself and Bee Organized
- 0:20and what got you into organizing
- 0:22yeah
- 0:22so
- 0:22I've always kind of been into organizing my own space
- 0:25um I've always liked to dig everything out
- 0:28pull it out and um
- 0:29you know get rid of the stuff that doesn't fit anymore
- 0:31that doesn't like um
- 0:33serve our household anymore
- 0:35so I decided that maybe I can make a business out of it
- 0:39um and help others
- 0:40because I just know the relief that I get
- 0:42when I just get the clutter out of the house
- 0:45um so
- 0:46started looking into some options
- 0:49and found Bee Organized
- 0:50and they are a franchise out of Kansas City
- 0:53and really the reason I chose them ultimately
- 0:55was for their values
- 0:56because their top values are being compassionate
- 1:00confidential and judgment free
- 1:02um
- 1:03so when anybody on my team or I go into someone's home
- 1:07um you know
- 1:07I want them to know that we're there to help
- 1:09like we really truly
- 1:11we love to organize I love pulling all that stuff out
- 1:14but ultimately it's just
- 1:15seeing that weight lifted off of people's shoulders um
- 1:18and making their day to day life easier
- 1:22that's fantastic I mean I
- 1:24I think judgment free is such a huge part of that
- 1:27whenever you have someone come into your house
- 1:29the first thing that most people say is oh
- 1:31excuse the mess oh
- 1:31I'm so sorry it's not perfect
- 1:33so I think just addressing that right off the bat
- 1:36is so important yeah
- 1:38I mean I say a lot of times
- 1:39that embarrassment is one of my biggest competitors
- 1:42because people don't want to call me because of that
- 1:44and I'm like well
- 1:45first of all
- 1:45I wouldn't have this job if you didn't do this haha
- 1:48so thank you but also
- 1:50I mean truly
- 1:51we are not judging and we just really love doing it
- 1:56I mean I love pulling stuff out
- 1:58and then I love hearing from people
- 1:59I was looking for that I'm like
- 2:01that's amazing we found it
- 2:02you know so it really
- 2:05everyone that works for me is the same
- 2:07like we really just get joy out of
- 2:09seeing the joy on people's faces
- 2:11as you're going through um
- 2:12and helping them simplify their lives
- 2:15I love that
- 2:16so Kelly
- 2:17when you're organizing for somebody
- 2:19who has a cancer diagnosis
- 2:21how is that different than a regular client
- 2:23um well
- 2:24I'd say that the our first priority is not aesthetics
- 2:28right I mean
- 2:28of course we want it to look nice
- 2:30but the first priority is function
- 2:32we want that client to be able to find things easier
- 2:36make it easier day to day life
- 2:38where they're not having to spend time and energy
- 2:41searching for medications
- 2:43or the tissues or their snacks
- 2:46you know whatever it may be
- 2:47it's all about function
- 2:48and really customizing to what working for them
- 2:52you know everybody's different
- 2:54um you know
- 2:55when I'm reaching for something I
- 2:57I always kind of use the example of the kitchen
- 2:59I reach for my spices on the left
- 3:01you may not do that so
- 3:02I'm not gonna just go in your kitchen
- 3:04and automatically put all your spices on
- 3:05the left because that's where I go to
- 3:07we really talk to our clients
- 3:09we wanna listen and
- 3:10and hear what they need and how they live their lives
- 3:14and customize a solution
- 3:15that's gonna make their life easier
- 3:18so that makes a lot of sense
- 3:19so for someone watching right now
- 3:21who's at home feeling completely overwhelmed
- 3:23what is a step that they could start with
- 3:26you know start small
- 3:27take one drawer that just really is bothering you
- 3:31or it's in a place where
- 3:32that would be very helpful for you
- 3:34to reach for something one drawer
- 3:36and it really only takes about 10 minutes or so
- 3:39to just pull everything out
- 3:41sort through it throw away the trash
- 3:44um if there's stuff to relocate
- 3:45throw it somewhere in the house
- 3:47make a little pile of that to relocate um
- 3:50and put the things in there
- 3:51that are really going to be helpful for you
- 3:53things that you really need um
- 3:56versus all the other miscellaneous stuff
- 3:57that kind of ends up in some drawers
- 4:00just one door will make a huge difference
- 4:02it's true
- 4:03and the sense of pride and accomplishment that you get
- 4:07we just did our junk drawer recently
- 4:10like probably in the last month
- 4:11and my husband did it and he was so proud of himself
- 4:15and we've kept it so clean because we're both just like
- 4:18every time we open it we get so happy
- 4:20which is so ridiculous
- 4:22but it really didn't take that long
- 4:23and 90% of the stuff in there was garbage right
- 4:27yeah exactly
- 4:28and it just
- 4:29it saves time for when you're looking for things
- 4:32it saves money because you're not rebuying things
- 4:35um and it just yeah
- 4:37it just makes things simple
- 4:39definitely
- 4:40Kelly what is decision fatigue
- 4:43and what does that look like
- 4:44for someone going through treatment
- 4:46maybe in a cluttered home
- 4:47right so
- 4:48you know I don't think we even all understand it
- 4:51but it's just kind of happening behind the scenes
- 4:53that visual clutter is keeping your brain engaged
- 4:57right because
- 4:57you're just constantly looking at the pile of things
- 4:59and a lot of times you are
- 5:02you know trying to find like
- 5:03a medication or a chapstick or something like that
- 5:06and to have to look through a group of mismatched items
- 5:12fatigues our brain
- 5:13whether we really know it or realize it at the time
- 5:16but it just does and I think
- 5:17especially when you're going through treatment
- 5:19anything that you can
- 5:21take away to minimize your stress
- 5:24um or just
- 5:25I know I keep saying make things easier
- 5:27but it just does you know
- 5:28if you can just look reach for that chapstick
- 5:31put it on put it back right
- 5:32you know where it belongs versus like
- 5:34where is it what's in this pile
- 5:36you know um it it fatigues us
- 5:40yeah I could totally see that
- 5:41I think you always feel calmer when you're in
- 5:44like a
- 5:44a clean uncluttered space
- 5:47yeah absolutely
- 5:48I mean a lot of people
- 5:50you know don't really understand
- 5:51I think the value of a professional organizer
- 5:54um you know
- 5:55some people are just like oh
- 5:57you're just bringing the pretty containers or whatever
- 5:59and we do that for some clients
- 6:01but really at the end of the day
- 6:03even if we do do the you know
- 6:04the pantry with the
- 6:05with the pretty containers and the labels
- 6:08it's still reducing stress in people's lives
- 6:10because if something has a home
- 6:12you know where to look for it
- 6:15and everybody knows where to put it back
- 6:17right because if all the pasta lives in one bin
- 6:21that's where you look for it
- 6:22that's when you come home from the grocery store
- 6:24you put it in that bin um
- 6:26it just again
- 6:27it's just easy and um
- 6:31yeah hahaha yeah
- 6:33no totally
- 6:34I am not the most organized person
- 6:37but the one part of my house that is very organized
- 6:40is my pantry and um
- 6:42you know I have three teenage boys
- 6:44and so I have the clear bins
- 6:46and I when with the grocery
- 6:49well I do grocery delivery
- 6:51so when the grocery order comes
- 6:53I break down all the boxes of snacks
- 6:56and I put them all in the bins
- 6:57and all the boxes go out that same day
- 6:59so that we don't go to the pantry throughout the week
- 7:02and find the empty box because someone took it out
- 7:04or there was one left and we didn't know
- 7:06all of the snacks are in the clear bins
- 7:08all of the boxes are gone that first day
- 7:10and that makes my week run so much smoother
- 7:13right yes yes
- 7:15and you're not rebuying it
- 7:16because you can clearly see everything that you have
- 7:19so you're not buying you know
- 7:20too much
- 7:21and then you have to find a place to store that
- 7:23it's a whole domino effect really
- 7:25it is and as a mom
- 7:26they don't ask me where things are
- 7:28which is very helpful cause I get real sick of that
- 7:31right right
- 7:32haha that's huge haha
- 7:34that's the worst
- 7:36haha
- 7:37yeah and that's the beauty of the organizing too
- 7:40because again everybody knows where the stuff lives
- 7:42so they don't have to say
- 7:43you know mom
- 7:44where is it they know where it should be
- 7:46and when you bring it home
- 7:47they know how to help you to put it away
- 7:50oh that's an excellent point that I did not think of
- 7:52but you're right
- 7:52I do have them put it away from time to time
- 7:54just kind of depends on who's home
- 7:56when the groceries get delivered
- 7:57who puts it away
- 7:58and everyone does know how to do it and where they go
- 8:00and so that's a great point too
- 8:02yeah exactly right
- 8:22so when you do get a client's space nice and organized
- 8:26what do you see as far as their emotional shift
- 8:29yeah you know
- 8:29we just find that they just feel lighter and happier um
- 8:34and just know that they're gonna be calm
- 8:37when they come home
- 8:37and not have to be looking for things
- 8:39spending energy just using that energy to heal
- 8:42versus doing other things in the home really
- 8:45oh that's such a great point
- 8:47so for a patient
- 8:48who is getting ready to go into a treatment
- 8:50and wants to make sure their room is nice
- 8:52and organized and ready for them
- 8:54so that when they get home
- 8:55it's a nice easy transition
- 8:57what would that look like
- 8:59what can they do
- 9:00to really get that space ready for themselves
- 9:03so I think a couple of things
- 9:04um one
- 9:05the nightstand I mean
- 9:06that's the first place you can start
- 9:07cause that's where you're really gonna be
- 9:09grabbing for things right
- 9:10so even just like a basket with your tissues in it
- 9:13you know maybe some cozy socks
- 9:14um a Chapstick or whatever so
- 9:16or a book you know
- 9:17just things that you're gonna want while you're resting
- 9:20and um
- 9:21getting better um
- 9:22another one would be a medication station somewhere
- 9:26um you know
- 9:26maybe in again
- 9:28an easy to reach place but again
- 9:30like a
- 9:30a basket or a bin with all your medications together
- 9:33and that helps too
- 9:34if somebody else comes in to help you
- 9:37so if you have a loved one or a friend that
- 9:39you know wants to come in and help
- 9:40and let's say you know
- 9:41it's time for your medication hey
- 9:43my medication is all in a basket in the kitchen
- 9:46it's very easy to find and then on that same note um
- 9:50a medication and maybe like
- 9:52doctor's resource page so have everything on one page
- 9:56so again
- 9:56if somebody comes in to help um
- 9:58or you know
- 9:59if you just need to make an appointment
- 10:01or something like that
- 10:02you have one page that someone can easily look at
- 10:05you can easily look at um
- 10:06to find the information that you need
- 10:09um and then snacks
- 10:10you know we all love snacks
- 10:12so get your snacks organized
- 10:13you know get them just like you've done
- 10:15get them in something visible
- 10:17something easy to reach and we like to say
- 10:19like the prime real estate would kind of be like
- 10:21from your waist to your neck
- 10:23so something where that you don't have to bend over
- 10:26you don't have to reach you know
- 10:27put it in an easy easy um
- 10:31easy to reach place so that again
- 10:34conserve your energy for healing
- 10:36that that's really the whole goal here
- 10:39yeah absolutely
- 10:40that's such a great point
- 10:42okay Kelly
- 10:42the next thing I want to talk about is medical records
- 10:46so when you're going through cancer treatments
- 10:48there's a lot of records a lot of appointments
- 10:50a lot of scans a lot of results
- 10:52and I don't know about our patients
- 10:54but I know for me those live on the floor of my car
- 10:57so what do you recommend we do with those yes
- 11:01well we would recommend the system
- 11:03a little bit more efficient haha
- 11:06um so you know what
- 11:07a binder a binder with tabs
- 11:09just get a simple binder with tabs
- 11:11um each tab can be per doctor
- 11:13or per medication or something like that
- 11:15just tuck those documents into the binder
- 11:17when you get home um
- 11:19or if you have digital paperwork
- 11:20you want to put a folder um
- 11:22in your email it's very easy to
- 11:24to dedicate a folder to um
- 11:27you know medications again doctors whatever
- 11:29keep it in one spot is really
- 11:31really the key is one location
- 11:33one binder one folder something like that
- 11:37that's a great point and
- 11:39I love the idea of having a virtual
- 11:42and a physical copy
- 11:43cause depending on what you're doing
- 11:45who you're sharing it with or what you're looking for
- 11:48either one might be more convenient at the time
- 11:51all right again
- 11:52and really through all of this
- 11:54you know loved ones and friends really wanna help
- 11:57and if you make it easy for them to help
- 11:59you know that's all the better
- 12:02let's talk about products now
- 12:04that can help us make organizing a little bit easier
- 12:07do you have a favorite store you like
- 12:09to buy these products
- 12:10or any kind of tips for us on shopping
- 12:13oh yes
- 12:14we love products so you can buy them anywhere Target
- 12:17Walmart Amazon
- 12:19The Container Store they've all got them
- 12:21um a couple of things
- 12:22the good old drawer dividers
- 12:24I mean they come in different sizes
- 12:26um these are clear ones
- 12:27they even come in colors that again
- 12:30a simple thing to organize
- 12:31the nightstand or the junk drawer
- 12:33um you know
- 12:34this little one
- 12:35you're gonna put in maybe your medications
- 12:37or your paper clips or whatever
- 12:39it just makes things easier to find
- 12:42um pill organizers
- 12:43they're amazing you know
- 12:44and they're not just for older people
- 12:46they're for all of us even vitamins
- 12:48you know if you're going traveling or something
- 12:49or if it's something that you need to take every day
- 12:52that pill organizer it's gonna help tremendously
- 12:55um a rolling cart
- 12:56I love a rolling cart especially by your bedside
- 12:59again maybe you don't have a nightstand
- 13:01or your nightstand doesn't have room
- 13:03for all the things that you wanna keep handy
- 13:05just get a really easy rolling cart
- 13:07and you can put on there a cozy blanket
- 13:09you know um
- 13:10a book your tissues etcetera
- 13:12and then you can take it from room to room too
- 13:14so you don't just have to keep it in the bedroom right
- 13:16you can take it into the family room too
- 13:18if you're going in there to watch TV or whatever
- 13:20um those are some of the ones that we really think make
- 13:23makes life easier
- 13:25I love the rolling cart idea
- 13:28that is so smart because you can load those things up
- 13:32and then just roll it around with you
- 13:34that is such a great idea
- 13:36we just moved my son into his dorm
- 13:38and I got him a rolly cart for his dorm
- 13:39because same concept he could
- 13:42we put snacks and all kinds of stuff in it
- 13:43they hold a lot and he can roll it over by his desk
- 13:47and then roll it over by his bed
- 13:48and that's really the amount of space in a dorm
- 13:50but yeah
- 13:52it was so great to get him organized because it
- 13:54it just holds so much stuff
- 13:56and his even has like
- 13:57a pegboard on the side that came with like
- 13:59little cups that you kind of can put whatever
- 14:03um we ended up filling one of the cups with like
- 14:05chip clip bag like
- 14:06the little chip clips that go in your bags right
- 14:09and it it was fantastic
- 14:10so I can't even imagine yeah
- 14:12for a patient in recovery yeah
- 14:14you could put so much in one of those carts
- 14:16and they don't take up a lot of room
- 14:18no they don't take a lot of room
- 14:19and you're not limited to them
- 14:20the items right
- 14:21it's not specifically for the kitchen
- 14:23or for the bathroom it's
- 14:24you put whatever you need in that cart
- 14:27such a great idea
- 15:00Kelly can you overcomplicate organizing
- 15:03do you ever see people kind of
- 15:05do unnecessary steps that they don't really need
- 15:08absolutely well
- 15:09first of all
- 15:10a lot of people buy the containers before decluttering
- 15:13and editing your items
- 15:15you really wanna edit your items first
- 15:17and then bring the containers in to fit your space
- 15:21um don't try to fit the containers in first
- 15:24cause that doesn't usually work
- 15:26and then also people tend to overdo it right
- 15:29so like if they want to do their closet
- 15:32they just pull everything out
- 15:33and they throw it all on the floor
- 15:35and the bed and everything
- 15:36and then they're like oh my gosh
- 15:37what do I do now they get very overwhelmed
- 15:39don't do that start with one section
- 15:41you know maybe just do the short sleeve shirts first
- 15:43and then feel that accomplishment and be like wow
- 15:46I can do this right
- 15:47and then go with the long sleeve shirts
- 15:49you know do it piece by piece
- 15:50don't tackle a huge area by yourself
- 15:54because that's where people get stuck
- 15:56yeah I feel like that's very relatable
- 15:58like I
- 15:59we've all done that pulled everything out of the closet
- 16:01and then sat on the floor and cried
- 16:03because why did we do this to ourselves exactly
- 16:07right we've all done it
- 16:08yeah yeah
- 16:09less is more when you're organizing
- 16:11um especially when you're sitting by yourself
- 16:14yes and
- 16:15you know speaking to buying things you don't need
- 16:18my husband's version of organizing
- 16:21is to buy more laundry hampers
- 16:22always doesn't matter
- 16:24doesn't matter as soon as we start like oh
- 16:27we gotta clean out the closet
- 16:28or organize the laundry room or
- 16:30or the upstairs the bedroom
- 16:31whatever it is he's like
- 16:32let's go buy laundry baskets
- 16:33and I'm like why
- 16:35why
- 16:37I don't know that's so funny
- 16:39yeah we all have our little quirky thing like that
- 16:41well at least laundry baskets can stack
- 16:43so you can kind of at least organize them a bit
- 16:48yeah it's just so funny to me
- 16:49that that is his answer for anything
- 16:52just buy more laundry baskets
- 16:54it's his version of a container
- 16:56yes it is
- 16:57it is for sure
- 16:59Kelly this has been such a great conversation
- 17:01thank you so much for coming
- 17:03and talking about all of this stuff
- 17:04I feel so motivated now to go organize something
- 17:07like I I feel very gung ho
- 17:09I'm ready um
- 17:10so just thank you for that
- 17:12and in closing
- 17:14what would you like to leave our listeners with
- 17:17well thank you for having me
- 17:18I really appreciate it um
- 17:20I appreciate your time I
- 17:21I think I'd like everyone just to remember
- 17:24that organizing is not just about making things pretty
- 17:27um
- 17:27it's really about protecting your energy and your calm
- 17:32and helping you to make one less decision
- 17:36on your hardest day right
- 17:38it's protecting your future self
- 17:40I love that I think that's so important
- 17:42especially for our patients
- 17:44so thank you for that
- 17:45and how can people find a Bee Organized near them
- 17:48you said it's franchised
- 17:50it is so um
- 17:51we're online BeeOrganized.com
- 17:54and then you can find your closest location
- 17:57there's over 50 um
- 17:59which is amazing and um
- 18:01yeah and
- 18:02and like I said our whole motto is being compassionate
- 18:05confidential and judgment free
- 18:08and every owner every team works that way
- 18:11so you know
- 18:12we just love helping people again
- 18:16lift that weight off their shoulders
- 18:18and just feel good about their space
- 18:20it really does make a difference
- 18:22fantastic alright everyone
- 18:24thank you for tuning in
