Speaker 1: Chapter twelve, fire Eater gives Pinocchio five gold pieces for
• 0:04
Speaker 1: his father, Geppetto, but the marionette meets a fox and
• 0:07
Speaker 1: a cat and follows them. The next day, fire Eater
• 0:11
Speaker 1: called Pinocchio side and asked him, what is your father's name, Geppetto,
• 0:16
Speaker 1: and what is his trade? He's a wood carver. Does
• 0:20
Speaker 1: he earn much? He earns so much that he never
• 0:22
Speaker 1: has a pinion in his pockets. Just think that in
• 0:25
Speaker 1: order to buy me an a B. C. Book for school,
• 0:27
Speaker 1: he had to sell the only coat he owned, a
• 0:29
Speaker 1: coat so full of darns and patches that it was
• 0:31
Speaker 1: a pity poor fellow. I feel sorry for him. Here,
• 0:35
Speaker 1: take these five gold pieces, go give them to him
• 0:37
Speaker 1: with my kindest regards. Pinocchio, as may easily be imagined,
• 0:42
Speaker 1: thanked him a thousand times. He kissed each marionette in turn,
• 0:45
Speaker 1: even the officers, and beside himself with joy, set out
• 0:48
Speaker 1: on his homeward journey. He had gone barely half a
• 0:52
Speaker 1: mile when he met a lame fox and a blind
• 0:53
Speaker 1: cat walking together like two good friends. The lame fox
• 0:57
Speaker 1: leaned on the cat, and the blind cat let the
• 0:59
Speaker 1: fox lead him along. Good morning, Pinocchio, said the fox,
• 1:03
Speaker 1: greeting him courteously. How do you know my name, asked
• 1:05
Speaker 1: the marionette. I know your father, well, where have you
• 1:09
Speaker 1: seen him? I saw him yesterday standing at the door
• 1:11
Speaker 1: of his house. What was he doing? He was in
• 1:15
Speaker 1: his shirt sleeves, trembling with cold. Oh poor father, But
• 1:19
Speaker 1: after today, God willing, he will suffer no longer. Why
• 1:23
Speaker 1: because I have become a rich man. You a rich man,
• 1:27
Speaker 1: said the fox, and he began to laugh out blowed.
• 1:30
Speaker 1: The cat was laughing also, but tried to hide it
• 1:32
Speaker 1: by stroking his long whiskers. There is nothing to laugh at,
• 1:36
Speaker 1: cried Pinocchio angrily. I am very sorry to make your
• 1:38
Speaker 1: mouth water, but these, as you know, are five new
• 1:41
Speaker 1: gold pieces. And he pulled out the gold pieces which
• 1:44
Speaker 1: fire Eater had given him. At the cheerful tinkle of gold,
• 1:47
Speaker 1: the fox unconsciously held out his paw that was supposed
• 1:50
Speaker 1: to be lame, and the cat opened wide his two
• 1:52
Speaker 1: eyes till they looked like live coals. But he closed
• 1:54
Speaker 1: them again so quickly that Pinocchio did not notice. And may,
• 1:58
Speaker 1: I ask, inquired the fox, what you are going to
• 2:01
Speaker 1: do with all that money? First of all, into the Marionette.
• 2:04
Speaker 1: I want to buy a fine new coat for my father,
• 2:06
Speaker 1: a coat of gold and silver with diamond buttons. After that,
• 2:09
Speaker 1: I'll buy an A B. C. Book for myself, for yourself.
• 2:13
Speaker 1: For myself, I want to go to school and study hard.
• 2:16
Speaker 1: Look at me, said the fox, For the silly reason
• 2:19
Speaker 1: of wanting to study, I have lost a paw. Look
• 2:22
Speaker 1: at me, said the cat, for the same foolish reason,
• 2:25
Speaker 1: I have lost the sight of both eyes. At that moment,
• 2:28
Speaker 1: a blackbird perched on the fence along the road, called
• 2:30
Speaker 1: out shop and clear, Pinocchio, do not listen to bad advice.
• 2:33
Speaker 1: If you do, you'll be sorry, poor little blackbird, if
• 2:38
Speaker 1: he'd only kept his words to himself. In the twinkling
• 2:41
Speaker 1: of a eyelid, the cat leaped on him and ate him,
• 2:43
Speaker 1: feathers and all. After eating the bird, he cleaned his whiskers,
• 2:47
Speaker 1: closed his eyes, and became blind once more. Poor blackbird,
• 2:51
Speaker 1: said Pinocchio to the cat, Why did you kill him?
• 2:54
Speaker 1: I killed him to teach him a lesson. He talks
• 2:55
Speaker 1: too much. Next time, you will keep his words to himself.
• 2:59
Speaker 1: By this time, the three companions had walked a long distance. Suddenly,
• 3:02
Speaker 1: the fox stopped in his tracks, and turning to the marionette,
• 3:05
Speaker 1: said to him, do you want to double your gold pieces?
• 3:08
Speaker 1: What do you mean? Do you want one hundred, one thousands,
• 3:12
Speaker 1: two thousands gold pieces for your miserable five? Yes, but
• 3:16
Speaker 1: how the way is very easy. Instead of returning home,
• 3:20
Speaker 1: come with us? And where will you take me? To
• 3:24
Speaker 1: the city of simple simons. Pinocchio thought, awhile, and then
• 3:28
Speaker 1: said firmly no, I don't want to go. Home is near,
• 3:31
Speaker 1: and I'm going where father is waiting for me. How
• 3:34
Speaker 1: unhappy he must be that I have not yet returned.
• 3:36
Speaker 1: I have been a bad son. And the talking cricket
• 3:38
Speaker 1: was right when he said that a disobedient boy cannot
• 3:41
Speaker 1: be happy in this world. I have learned this at
• 3:43
Speaker 1: my own expense. Even last night in the theater, when
• 3:45
Speaker 1: a fire eater, the shivers run up and down my
• 3:49
Speaker 1: back at the mere thought of it. Well, then, said fox,
• 3:52
Speaker 1: if you really want to go home, go ahead, but
• 3:55
Speaker 1: you'll be sorry. You'll be sorry, repeated the cat. Think well, Pinocchio,
• 4:00
Speaker 1: you are turning your back on Dame Fortune. On Dame Fortune,
• 4:04
Speaker 1: repeated the cat. Tomorrow your five gold pieces will be
• 4:08
Speaker 1: two thousand, two thousand, repeated the cat. But how can
• 4:12
Speaker 1: they possibly become so many, asked Pinocchio, wonderingly. I'll explain,
• 4:16
Speaker 1: said the fox. You must know that just outside the
• 4:19
Speaker 1: city of simple Simons, there is a blessed field called
• 4:23
Speaker 1: the Field of Wonders. In this field you dig a hole,
• 4:26
Speaker 1: and in the hole you bury a gold piece. After
• 4:29
Speaker 1: covering up the hole with earth, you water it well,
• 4:32
Speaker 1: sprinkle a bit of salt on it, and go to bed.
• 4:35
Speaker 1: During the night, the gold piece sprouts, grows, blossoms, and
• 4:39
Speaker 1: next morning you find a beautiful tree that is loaded
• 4:42
Speaker 1: with gold pieces. So that if I were to bury
• 4:46
Speaker 1: my five gold pieces, cried Pinocchio, with growing wonder next
• 4:49
Speaker 1: morning I should find how many? It is very simple
• 4:53
Speaker 1: to figure out, answered the fox. Why you can figure
• 4:56
Speaker 1: it on your fingers. Granted that each piece gives you
• 4:59
Speaker 1: five hundred, multiply five hundred. By five next morning you
• 5:02
Speaker 1: will find twenty five hundred new sparkling gold pieces, fine fine,
• 5:09
Speaker 1: cried Pinocchio, dancing about with joy. And as soon as
• 5:11
Speaker 1: I have them, I shall keep two thousand for myself,
• 5:13
Speaker 1: and the other five hundred i'll give to you too,
• 5:16
Speaker 1: a gift for us, cried the fox, pretending to be insulted,
• 5:19
Speaker 1: why of course not, of course not, repeated the cat.
• 5:23
Speaker 1: We do not work for gain, answered the fox. We
• 5:25
Speaker 1: work only to enrich others. Do enrich others, repeated the cat,
• 5:31
Speaker 1: What good people thought? Pinocchio to himself and forgetting his father,
• 5:35
Speaker 1: the new coat, the A. B c. Book, and all
• 5:37
Speaker 1: his good resolutions, he said to the fox and the cat,
• 5:40
Speaker 1: let us go I am with you. End of Chapter twelve,
