Latest / Big Iron Radio / Homelab Brief - Obsidian as Long-Term Memory for an LLM
Transcript
- 0:02Welcome to the Homelab Brief from Big Iron.
- 0:06Today, giving an LLM agent real long-term memory
- 0:10using an obsidian vault over MCP.
- 0:14Quick note, this is an AI voice drawn from a Big Iron guide.
- 0:18Links below.
- 0:20The goal is one line.
- 0:22Give an agent persistent, human-readable memory
- 0:24and make that memory a plane marked on vault
- 0:27reached through an MCP server.
- 0:29The human-readable part is the whole point.
- 0:33Why a marked on vault instead of some opaque vector blob?
- 0:37Because it's dual-use.
- 0:39It's the agent's memory and your note's one shared corpus,
- 0:42not a black box.
- 0:44You can open it in obsidian and read exactly what the agent believes,
- 0:48fix it if it's wrong, or delete it if it's obsolete.
- 0:51That's the curate-your-eyes-memory property,
- 0:54the whole approach is built around.
- 0:56Each memory is a small note, and two things carry the weight.
- 0:59The one-line description does real work,
- 1:03it's what ranks the note for relevance,
- 1:05and what the agent reads to decide whether to open the full thing,
- 1:08so write it specific.
- 1:10And a Wikilink at the end connects it to a related note,
- 1:14which is how the vault becomes a navigable graph instead of a flat pile.
- 1:18A link to a note that doesn't exist yet is fine,
- 1:21it just marks something worth writing later.
- 1:24The MCP layer is small.
- 1:27Read tools keyword search, semantic search, read a note,
- 1:30list recent and write tools create a note, update, or append.
- 1:34That's the recall half and the memory formation half.
- 1:38And it runs as a loop.
- 1:40Recall work remember.
- 1:41At the start, the agent searches the vault
- 1:44and reads the relevant notes,
- 1:46so it's no longer starting blank.
- 1:48It does the work informed.
- 1:50Then it writes back the durable outcomes to duplicating,
- 1:53not spawning near copies.
- 1:56Next session, maybe on a different machine because the vault sinks,
- 1:59it recalls what it just recorded.
- 2:02Knowledge compounds instead of evaporating.
- 2:05The full setup's in the show notes.
- 2:07That's your brief.
