- 0:57Well, this is the last week of our plan again. I've enjoyed
- 1:00bringing you some of the programs we've played previously. I would love your feedback
- 1:04on this concept and how we might improve it or do something different from the
- 1:11next listener support campaign. Would you like to see another Played Again series then,
- 1:17or a series where we play some programs we're willing to do in the
- 1:21future but we're not yet quite too, or something where we do some non
- 1:25detective shows at your requests. Love to hear from you on that, of
- 1:30course. If you want to support the show, go to support dot Great
- 1:34Detectives dot net. And we have a couple of items. One I'll highlight
- 1:38at the twenty dollars level is your choice of any of the colonial theater radio
- 1:45dramas we list at Support dot Great Detectives dot Net. Among them are our
- 1:49classic Father Brown and Perry Mason stories. These are radio dramas that have been
- 1:57recorded in the modern era nineteen nineties into the twenty first century, but re
- 2:04enacting classic stories and really capturing their spirit. Well, there's another item all
- 2:09mentioned, but I'll save that for after the program. And now we get
- 2:14into the play it again email from Richard who rites in to say, Adam,
- 2:20I love your programming listening to it while I work. The shows are
- 2:23great, but one you should play again is Near a Wolf. Mister Wolf
- 2:28and Archie need a comeback, all right, rich Well, we've had a
- 2:31lot of listeners express that over the years, but you kind of left it
- 2:36up to me, so I hope you're going to appreciate the choice. I'm
- 2:39going to just play my favorite Nero Wolf episode from the New Adventures of Nearal
- 2:46Wolf, the Sydney Green Street series. This one comes from January nineteenth,
- 2:52nineteen fifty one, and it's called the Case of the Calculated Risk, featuring
- 2:58my favorite Archie Goodwin of this series, Gerald Moore. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 3:07The ringing of that phone bell means mystery adventure Erol Wolf's office. ACTI good
- 3:13one speaking mister Wolf. Yeah, he's right here. Who's this, Achie?
- 3:16Hang up? Don't ask questions. You have a wife, Achie.
- 3:21It's past your bedtime. Well, I'm afraid mister Wolf, but it's past
- 3:23his bedtime, your bedday. It's a client boss, That's what I was
- 3:28afraid of. Foodie. Hello, Hello, Well, why do you look
- 3:35super weirded? He's coming right over, he says, he's got a date
- 3:39with murder ladies and gentlemen. Is the the technic genius who rached the knife
- 4:00and fork, the greatest tools ever invented by man the pounders. Brilliant and
- 4:05unpredictable Nero Wolf created by Reck Stout and brought to you in a new series
- 4:11of adventures over this NBC Network in the person of mister Sidney Greensleet. It's
- 4:28night's story. The case of the Calculated Risk was as strange and baffling as
- 4:31any nearro Wolf had to deal with. It started late one night when a
- 4:35big shouldered man sporting a reddish beard and billing himself as Dave Caffrey, pushed
- 4:41his way in, walked up to Narrow Wolf's desk and rocked him with this
- 4:45opener tomorrow morning, mister Wolf, I'm going to kill a man. How
- 4:47bigger funds? I'm going to kill a man with these two hands. I
- 4:51have been doing strange things across this desk, mister Gaffery. This is the
- 4:56first time a murderer has confided his intention to me in advance. This man
- 5:00is to me. I'm not telling you his name. I'm not telling you
- 5:02where I'm going to meet him. Session tomorrow is going to be private in
- 5:05person. But if anything happens to me between now and then, I want
- 5:10you to take over. Mister Gaffrey. Do you seriously thing I could assist
- 5:15you in a matter of private vengeance. That's not what I'm asking. This
- 5:17guy deserves to die. I plan to kill him with these two hands,
- 5:21me myself, but if I slip up, if he gets me first,
- 5:26I want you to see that justice is done. And I assure you I
- 5:29told you this guy deserves to die. Let me tell you why. Years
- 5:33go down south, there were three men in business together. Partners mean two
- 5:38others. You're no Bugatti. Mister Gaffrey doesn't mind you're wasting your time.
- 5:43Wolf names I use will be phony. I won't give you anything you can
- 5:46check back on. We'll take a chance, sir, please proceed. Happened
- 5:51in a town about forty miles from the place where we had our business.
- 5:55We go let a collect some money for three of us, Carl, Mitch,
- 5:59and me Dave Catherrey. But all we collected was bad news, so
- 6:04bandit. Carl hadn't even given our right names at the hotel said it was
- 6:09scared some of our creditors to come hitting up on us for what We old
- 6:13three of us and had some drinks. And we've been pacing around for nearly
- 6:16an hour, and I can still remember the way Mitch stooden, looked at
- 6:20me, en up at Carl. Carl suddenly pulled to a stop and came
- 6:25out with this idea. Dave, we got six thousand cash on hand,
- 6:30you counted the Mitch, but didn't we make it sixty two forty car whichever.
- 6:34We've got this six thousand hours plus some slow accounts receivable against deaths of
- 6:40thirty eight thousand, the three of us trying to live from the business.
- 6:43We haven't got a change. Well, we ain't got much of one car.
- 6:46But it's hopeless day with two partners or two partners you reckon on pulling
- 6:51out car. I say we cut card for Admitch. Low Man drops out,
- 6:57break up the partnership after sticking together all. Wait a minute, Dave,
- 7:00wait a minute, maybe because right maybe this could work. Carl.
- 7:04You mean low Man drops our clean right now, right now, Mitch,
- 7:10other two to take over assets and debts. You see if they can get
- 7:12this thing back in the black. Okay, Carl, get the cards out,
- 7:15Dave, wam, that's what you guys want. Okay, there,
- 7:20here's a new deck shuffle of Mitch all shuffle, cut them, Dave,
- 7:30go ahead, Mitch, we'll get first pick, spread them if you like.
- 7:32Here goes Star six. Your turn, Dave. Okay, nine o'clock.
- 7:41Lucky guy, Dave. That puts you in whatever car pulls, I
- 7:45pull it fast. This is Denise. Sorry, Mitch, that leaves you
- 7:49elected. Well, Mitch, I'm sorry too, and yes we all had
- 7:54a fair whack at it. But hey, wait a minute, wait a
- 7:56minute. Let me see that ease again, Paul, easy bitch, I
- 8:01said I was sorry up day, Yeah, what is in me? All
- 8:03the eases are marked? Carl, I'm gonna cram this dick right down.
- 8:09You'll cook it, throw hot make he's got a knife. Sure, oh
- 8:16car, you all right? I've cut him for keeps? What do we
- 8:20do? Now? What are we doing? Look? Card, I did
- 8:24monk those card I didn't kill Mitch. And what's more, up, Dave,
- 8:28we're both in and not. Now come on, let's get out of
- 8:31here. Now what car? Lookkay? This is where we split up two
- 8:45men together, easy to trace. Who head one way? I go the
- 8:48other? Help with the door. I got no money here, I'll split
- 8:50up the six thousand. This is your hat. Yeah, stick the end
- 8:54broke from your pocket. Now prab that trace gets hit, I'll catch the
- 8:58next one going the other way. Get called deep. That's how it was,
- 9:07mister Wolfe. It all happened so fast that I hmm. This man
- 9:11you called Carl, he seemed to be one of the worst choice creatures,
- 9:16mister Geffrey. When I thought to look in an envelope he gave me,
- 9:18I found forty dollars and a few folds of ripping paper in it. I
- 9:22was smart enough to well. I got off the freightmanin tended to go back,
- 9:26and I picked up a paper and read all about the murder of your
- 9:31friend Mitch with the statement that Kyl had accused you of the crime and that
- 9:35the priest believed him in view of your escape. That's it, classic old
- 9:39but not at all original him. I was young, man, I'm stupid.
- 9:43I'd had those drinks to start with, and you spent the intervening years
- 9:48handing down the man, carl am I correct. Yeah. I trapped the
- 9:50country from east to west, from north to south, tramped her for years
- 9:54searching for him. Yesterday I look heated him. He's a big wheel these
- 9:58days up on that thirty heaven floor hears. But tomorrow when I get yes,
- 10:03mister gaffree, the thirty seven floor, never mind what building. I'll
- 10:05wait a minute, Caffrey. If you expect mister wolf to help you,
- 10:07I don't want him to help me. I'll help myself if I slip up.
- 10:11I know Wolfe's reputation well enough to know that he'll never rest till this
- 10:16rotten Chiselin murderers sitting in the chair. That's why I've come here, just
- 10:20to provide a backstop in case my dear friend of long ago managers to get
- 10:24the best of me. How we know you see this envelope, read what
- 10:28it says near Wolf six one West thirty fifth Street in New York, delivered
- 10:35to him in case of my dad. That's right, and this envelope is
- 10:37five hundred dollars, nearly all I've got in the world. Along with it
- 10:41the full details on that knife, in real names dates, the proof you'll
- 10:45need in case I don't finish it up. Who are tonight, mister Wolf.
- 10:48I'm going to give this envelope to the manager of the hotel where I'm
- 10:52stopping. I'm calling on well Carl tomorrow. It's now right after his secretary
- 11:00goes to lunch. I'm not back in my hotel at one o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
- 11:03A hotel manager will deliver this envelope to you exactly every day. But
- 11:07you don't think I'm going to allow you to go through with this wire Brandrea,
- 11:11you can't stop me, and don't have a good one follow me.
- 11:15I'd lose him in two blocks. Good night? Shall I try to tail
- 11:18him? Bossed? It? No use? Argie, Get Inspector Kramer on
- 11:22the phone at once. I want the police to help us head off this
- 11:26murder. Near a Wolf speaking it's Archie. I'm calling him the Morgue,
- 11:37and they found Cabri's Bundy in a subway washroom, mugged and stabbed while it
- 11:43gone, pockets cleaned out, no envelope. Just two hours ago he was
- 11:46here, no vb gone. Witnesses done so far homicidees calling it straight mugging
- 11:52and robbery as it well might look except for except for a guy named Carl.
- 11:58How much do I tell Crame? All of it I see inspected to
- 12:01start queer is throughout the South on the original killing, the original killing.
- 12:07It's our best chance of getting a description of the man called Car original killing
- 12:11and the partnership, starting from say eight years ago and working back to the
- 12:16middle twenties. Tell him to concentrate on towns on railway lines, putting out
- 12:20pictures of Caffrey, and the pictures and dentistry finger prints to Washington, Cramroo.
- 12:26And if I come across a haystack, do I keep my eye on
- 12:28for needles. We're going to find car Aargie. You're going to find him
- 12:33if it takes some natural doomsday, mister wolf, let's face it, we'll
- 12:43lacked he Chargie. Three days now, we found Caffrie's hotel here in New
- 12:48York, no traceable phone calls, not a witness has turned up on that
- 12:52subway washroom party. Kramer says he's getting nowhere with those answers from the Southland.
- 12:56The original story is bound to come slowly. Aargie, we're asking a
- 13:01check on the unsolved killings of a dozen states over twenty year period. And
- 13:05what now you start trudging, Argie Frugiic through office buildings, through thirty seventh
- 13:13floors, and many office buildings you keep trudging to be finding. Oh no,
- 13:18wait a minute, mister wolf. This is a big city. Remember
- 13:20I might have to go through hundreds of buildings this morning. Je. The
- 13:24municipal reference that Iry informed me is that exactly thirty four buildings and thirty seven
- 13:28floors are high in Manhattan. Now, when you rule out the United Nations
- 13:33building hotel, okay, okay, maybe not so many thirty seven floors,
- 13:37but lots of offices per floor, maybe forty or fifty, call it thirty
- 13:43times forty. And you've still got twelve hundred to start with. And you
- 13:48don't know what kind of business. You don't know what car's real name is,
- 13:50you don't even know what he looks like. There could be four thousand
- 13:52men like him, four thousand affluent men ergy. Yeah, well, all
- 13:56right, Caffrey said he was in the chips though. You know, for
- 14:01guy who've been bumming around, that could mean anything from ten grand a year.
- 14:03Up. Wait a minute, that cuts your field to one thousand thousand
- 14:07tall men tall. Ha been over those notes. Jeffrey didn't say it was
- 14:13tall as plainly as you could ask. Jeffrey was almost your height, but
- 14:18he said, Mitch stood and looked at me, and then he looked up
- 14:22at Carl. Up, Archie, that meets kyl you're a higher taller.
- 14:26Or maybe Caffrey and Mitch were sitting down and Carl was. Caffrey told us
- 14:31the three were standing at the time. Check your notes, I've studied him.
- 14:35Okay, maybe that does cut it down some. Yeah, it's still
- 14:37a lot of citizens to start checking for a Southern accent. Don't rely on
- 14:41accident, Archie. Carl has had many years to lose any accent he might
- 14:46have had. Yeah, that's true, And so we narrowed Archie. A
- 14:50man almost surely tall, a man not using the name he was born with,
- 14:56A man with an unexplained gap in his past. I ought to be
- 14:58able to reach right out. What's happened? You go skeptical again, RG,
- 15:03that was still a pretty big haystack. Let's see if we can't primit
- 15:07some more on needs building this I've been doing away. I ruled out for
- 15:13now the members of professions requiring lengthy formal training medical man, lawyer, scientists
- 15:18are most kind. Yeah, that's chopping it down. I'll admit that I'll
- 15:22have further eliminations as we get into it. And I'm putting soil panza on
- 15:26a second this this afternoon. Some of the credit references are handled by phone.
- 15:31So I start trudging. You start trudging, and remember, arg since
- 15:37you'll probably be operating through secretaries, you're looking for a murderer named Carr,
- 15:43not for a new set of telephone numbers to brecken your window. Tall.
- 15:56Well, I don't know what your pedlin, Goodwin, but if my boss
- 15:58put his elevator's shoes on and stood on a box, he'd still be down
- 16:03somewhere around my necktie. If he stood on his money, though, we'd
- 16:07need a helicopter to get up near his shooters. Oh, miss Jonas,
- 16:17do you mind if I sit down? Why? Of course not mister Goodwin.
- 16:18Oh thanks. You know, I've been in twelve offices on this floor
- 16:22and you're the first girl who seeing the importance of this survey first crack out
- 16:26of the box. Well, I'm sort of new here, and I try
- 16:29to pay attention. Oh you're not just beautiful, You've got a head on
- 16:32you is mister Mcleanan, Well he's at lunch right now. Lunch. Oh
- 16:36that reminds me. Now, any good restaurants up this way. Well,
- 16:40I was just going to the downstairs drug store myself, but I wouldn't say,
- 16:44oh, come on, put your bonnet on and let's get the drug
- 16:45store. This meal is on the executive or a Sauces survey. Yeah,
- 16:56I boss the boil down his name, McLaine, Fernand's, Testro and Caplin,
- 17:03all five of them tall, all five, a little misty in the
- 17:07background, and so all have done well, Archie very well. But I'm
- 17:11crossing off Fernandes and Caplin. Why credit bureau report tears Fernand's and Kaplin was
- 17:18on a special war job the FPI X rade his record twice saving JP Tinsley,
- 17:25Carson, McLain and Philip Tesrow. I'd like to see all three here,
- 17:29Archie, get them here one way or another. So you do admit
- 17:37that Tinsley isn't your real name, the Wolf of you're BLACKMAILO what. I'm
- 17:42a licensed private investigators, sir. Any disclosure you make will be kept in
- 17:48confidence, provided it doesn't touch on the case. I'm engaged. You haven't
- 17:52said what the case is. I don't intend to. If you prefer to
- 17:56explain this mysterious gap in your bad background. Had the District Attorney's office.
- 18:03Well, I'm using a name gensely because I've got an un divorced first wife
- 18:07out on the coast. You broke up twenty years ago, but she said
- 18:11she'd see to it that I never married again, and she knew where I
- 18:15was today. Well, I don't say I'm a saint, but she's a
- 18:19vindictive woman. I see. May I have names, dates and places start
- 18:25in nineteen twenty four. I can't quite understand your interest, mister Wolf.
- 18:34It's rather complicated to pretty briefly, mister McLain, I'm working in the interest
- 18:40of a kind. Our people have found this puzzling gap in your background,
- 18:44and i'd appreciate such clarification as you may be able to supply but I told
- 18:48you, mister Goodwin, I was raised and educated in the Orient until thirty
- 18:52two. I was in business with my father in China, where you say
- 18:56your father died died with ession. I returned to New York started this important
- 19:02business in a small way, whether it's through the early thirties, and I
- 19:04think my bankers can assure you of my standing today. They've done so.
- 19:10Carson MacLean and Company has an excellent credit rating. Thank you, mister Wolf.
- 19:15To switch some out of brapley, Mister McLean, would you happen to
- 19:18remember how you spent the evening of the nineteenth of this month and this month?
- 19:22Well, I could hardly agree. You say the nineteenth, Would that
- 19:27had been on a Tuesday? Yes, it was Tuesday, and that simplfies
- 19:30it. I nearly always at the office on Tuesday nights, dictating the revisions
- 19:34in our weekly wholesalers lists. Let it's see, Yes, I was there
- 19:38on the nineteenth at a trade center, Miss Tunis, and I worked till
- 19:41just after midnight. It's Helen Junis, the secretary mister Goodwin's book of She's
- 19:48been with me for two or three months. Miss Juniors can confirm this dictation
- 19:52on the night of the nineteenth, of course, And mister Wolf, your
- 19:56manner is so persuasive that I'd scarcely realize you're asking some extraordinary researching questions.
- 20:02May I ask why in the world if you're indulge me, Mister McLain,
- 20:06my crying is nearly concluded. You say you were in China until nineteen thirty
- 20:11two, Mister Tesro, I'd be brutally frank. We know that your name
- 20:22is not Tessro, and we know that you served a prison term from thirty
- 20:26four to thirty eight for arson. And I had some straight answers. I
- 20:30didn't say I wouldn't answer your questions first, can remain your own provided.
- 20:34And look, mister Wolf, I've been going straight for twelve years, and
- 20:38this business of mine is on the level. Now this is a shakedown.
- 20:41I'm asking you where you were on the night of the nineteenth. I'm telling
- 20:45you I stayed in town. I ate alone, and I went to a
- 20:48movie. I caught the eleven thirty five for Stem And that's all there is
- 20:51to it. You're denying that you were ever in business in the South.
- 20:55I was born in the South, but I haven't been back there since I
- 20:56was a kid. What about the arson I put in four years squaring for
- 21:00that mistake. Let's start again, mister tester. You say you were in
- 21:07Cincinnati in nineteen thirty one. Okay, mister Wolf. Three candidates, and
- 21:17we're still on the one yard line, our one yard line cesso McLain Tinsley.
- 21:22Now rule out McLain. He gave references enough for those years in China,
- 21:26and with Helen Suness, he's got the one firm alibi we've laid onto
- 21:30Caffery was killed before midnight with conditions as they are in the Fire East Archy,
- 21:36It'll be weeks before Cables came back on McLean's claim claims you figure the
- 21:41whole Chinese backgrounds are fake. I want you to see Miss Junis again,
- 21:45Archie taking all precautions for her safety, and this is one time I give
- 21:52you permission to play her with all the attentions you can contrive. Are we
- 21:56far enough to pull tales on any of these three? You've got Sore Panza
- 22:00on Testro and Sore promised to have men on Tinsley and McLean. Pictures of
- 22:06the three have gone to cream And for circulation in the South from the coast
- 22:11on Tinsley. I care in the moment I see you, will concentrate on
- 22:15Helen Tunis Helen. I've got to see you tonight. I'd love to at
- 22:26Helen. I phoned you to come out on the CARDI this way because I
- 22:27didn't want McLean to know we're talking. Do you still say you got that
- 22:30new make coat on your own money, mister Goodwin, I don't know what
- 22:34right you have you get five guys to buy your stuff at your business.
- 22:37Mister McLain said his wife might be detectives around, but you can go right
- 22:41back to your old missus, McLean and tell her right. He was dictating
- 22:45to me. No, Baby, the harder you lie, the prettier you
- 22:48look. But if this is a fake alibi, and if you keep propping
- 22:51it up, you're gonna find yourself in trouble, bad trouble. Now,
- 22:55how about it? Do I see you at your apartments tonight? Would you
- 22:57rather come down with me? Nero wolves right now? Archie, I all
- 23:02right, I can't go with you now, and I've got a dinner date
- 23:03with my aunt tonight that I can't break. But I'll try to be back
- 23:07at my apartment by eleven Archie, Yeah, wolves beings Archie, mister Wolfe
- 23:26and Helen Sullis's apartment. Well, I could cut my throat for not making
- 23:30it. Come with me this afternoon. Trouble not for her anymore, poor
- 23:33kidd. I got here three minutes ago and found a strangle. It happened
- 23:37more than half an hour ago. McLane, McClane. That's all pants say.
- 23:42He was getting a tail on him. He was a new man and
- 23:45he lost him. I should have left you on McLean, Argie. We
- 23:48were both wrong. What do you want me to do? Phone them please
- 23:52immediately. This is thirty second street. I'm only three blocks in a job
- 23:55from the office. What have I come back and called from there? Come
- 23:59back then on creaming myself the wolf are still kicking myself for that. Yeah,
- 24:03actually late to Wolf. Keep coming right in Goodwin with your hands up.
- 24:07No, I wouldn't try that. McLean and keep your hand out of
- 24:11that desk. Draw Wolf this time you are too late. McLean. My
- 24:15hands in the drawer and I think I'll leave it there. You don't think
- 24:18I should. I am sure you would. And you've got two of us
- 24:22to govern now, No, Art, you don't try to draw yet ad
- 24:26you get in here? McLean? He surprised me after making his way in
- 24:30through the area way below. And of course it had to be Fritz's night
- 24:33out. I caught your fat friend just two seconds before he could get in
- 24:37his call to the police, Goodwin. I overheard his talk with you from
- 24:41the hallway here. My apologies for not crying out sooner, Archie. Get
- 24:45your hand out of that draw. Pull it out without the gun. Wolf,
- 24:47I'll let you have it now. I refuse to McLean. Seems ob
- 24:52is it? You mean to kill us? In any case, I'm afraid
- 24:55that's true. Wolf. When you called me here and Goodwin started making dates
- 25:00with Helen Tunnish here, I told her not to talk to you. He
- 25:02didn't. Good I've been scared of you and Wolf since I followed Colby here
- 25:06that first night. Colby, you knew him as Caffrey. I caught up
- 25:10with him afterward in that subway wash. No, he got hand up.
- 25:14What's that going of yours? Wolf? I found that envelope on him and
- 25:18read the letter to you contained in it. I knew we hadn't spilled the
- 25:22whole South Carolina story to you South Carolina. Whether your original or kniving have
- 25:27mean taking place anywhere near Hampton or Jasper Countiss Hampton County. But our business
- 25:33is over the line in Georgia. Doesn't matter now, pretty Argy. We
- 25:37learned this afternoon and we were growing warm on South Carolina. Mister Magnane,
- 25:42may I ask what you hope to achieve by this insane traject of disposing of
- 25:48mister Goodwin and myself and buying time Wolf. I have ninety thousands of small
- 25:52bills in that bag there. That's a plane ticket of Buenos Aires. I've
- 25:56got a silence on this gun. If you two aren't found old tomorrow morning,
- 26:00I'll be out of the country before they start looking for me. You
- 26:03don't think the police will put out an alarm view and they find the body
- 26:07of heading Tunis Goodwin left it to you to report that. Remember, let's
- 26:11remind ourselves to be prompt and reporting deaths Achie, starting with our own.
- 26:15Mister wool glad you can take it that way, Goodwin, you actually think
- 26:18you can knock the two of us off. I'm about to find out Goodwin
- 26:22one moment. McLean, You've never been a real gambler, you know that
- 26:29with Mack cars, of course, but you're not the man to face the
- 26:33suer loss now a sure loss, the loss of your life, and in
- 26:37seconds after you try to pull that trigger. I told you I had a
- 26:41silencer. You think anyone will hear the shots? There will be more shirts
- 26:45than you count on. My hand's on a pistol now in this drawer,
- 26:48and mister Goodwin has a thirty eight in his shoulder. Hoster. You can't
- 26:52thoo through the desk, and Goodwin won't get a chance to draw. You're
- 26:56an intelligent man, McLean, vicious but intelligent. May I describe the certainty
- 27:00of your immediate death if you don't throw that pistol on the desk and give
- 27:06yourself up. There are two of you. I know that, but McLane,
- 27:10you must be aware in the actual fact, exceedingly few men are killed
- 27:14instantly by a single shot, even from a pistol of heavy caliber. The
- 27:18one you hold is thirty two, and it's a forty five in that draw
- 27:22McLane, I assure you, McLean, and neither of us will surrender the
- 27:26weapons we have should you start shooting. We are both do our best to
- 27:30draw and keep firing till you're dead. You're starling Wolf. What have I
- 27:36got to lose by trying for you both? Now you're alive, I'll correct
- 27:40that the loss of some six or eight weeks of your life, possibly months,
- 27:45whatever the time necessary to bring you to trial and to convict you and
- 27:48execute you for the murders you've committed. Suppose I canceled you are, and
- 27:52then take my chances with Goodwin. I better choice, but still a dubious
- 27:56one. I am fat exceedingly and perhaps the first time in my life,
- 28:03I'm thoroughly grateful for that. My belk affects the calculation. McLean, McLean,
- 28:08you could pull off all seven shots and still not hit mister Wolf where
- 28:11it counts. You have to start. You better start on me, you
- 28:15sederate Thatch, and I thank you for the gallantry of it. No,
- 28:18it's quite likely that with two or three shots McLean might well dispose of me.
- 28:23But not with your first shot, McLean, and may not permit you
- 28:27many more than your first look. If I promise to do no more than
- 28:33tie you two up to give me my head start, you're tossing your guns.
- 28:36Of course, Now do I speak for his berth argy check, I
- 28:40say let's start it now. Well, if I could do half of what's
- 28:42in that bag, would you forget these admissions I've made and help on my
- 28:45defense I've to do. I refuse to bargain. I think that they should
- 28:52count fight if your weapon hasn't been touched on the desk. But then I'll
- 28:57do my best to get my pistol into it. How are you in the
- 29:00corn ugine? Start counting? Wait a minute, mister wolf one. If
- 29:04I trade half that bag for no shooting and one hour start no tying up,
- 29:10just joe promise that two all the bag for a half hours? Top
- 29:12ninety thousand three? Are you ready? Argy, all said sir, except
- 29:18if you're the one who walks out of this, call up every number in
- 29:22my little red book. Huh and tell each girl I was thinking of her
- 29:25just before you got the five. Agreed, I resume four. Okay,
- 29:32you'll win. Holy Sweet Susan mid White. They work, Commander, But
- 29:36Joey's McLean for us at least you see. I'm afraid I forgot to mention
- 29:40one slight factor which might have operated in your framer. What's that, boss,
- 29:45I'm asking face Archie that my forty five is in the mpstairs Dan where
- 29:48I took it to oil last night. Holy cow, you didn't have a
- 29:52gun. You get asy McLean. I've really got one. Oh. By
- 29:57the way, mister Woolf signals off on those women, but my heart gets
- 30:02back down out of my throat. I'll call them myself. I'll trouble you
- 30:06for a beer first at Jane, and then if you'll be good enough to
- 30:11phone inspected cream now you can meet him pick up his triple murderer, the
- 30:15one time cutter of cards. Fortunately for us who's never been a real gambler.
- 30:40You have been listening to the New Adventures of Nero World, starring Sydney
- 30:44green Street. The Nice Transcribe story was based on the characters created by Rex
- 31:03stnd. This is an Edwin Fatiman program Produceton directed by Jay Donald Wilson in
- 31:08the cast where Gerald Moore as Archie Goodwin and Lorraine Catter, Bill Johnstone,
- 31:14Howard mcneer, Herb Butterfield, and Vic Rodman. Next week at the same
- 31:18time, Nero Wolf and Archie will bring you the Case of the Phantom Fingers
- 31:22Don Stanley speaking three chimes mean good Times on NBC Welcome Back, I Love
- 31:38that scene at the end, that's just such a perfect, you know,
- 31:45very daring scene. Now there's a lot of that's off about it, you
- 31:51know, if you want to be a nero Wolf purist, because nothing in
- 31:55the books indicates that Wolf keeps the forty five in his desk or that he
- 32:00antle's weapons at all. But Kake and just within the context of the episode,
- 32:06it's just so clever and so classic. And I do love Gerald Moore
- 32:13as the as Archie Goodwin. I find myself somewhat curious about the Elliott Lewis
- 32:22version from the Amazing Neural Wolf story from nineteen forty seven over Mutual, but
- 32:34we only have one episode with him, so it's kind of hard to evaluate
- 32:37his overall archiness. I just made up an adjective there. And despite being
- 32:45unlike the series, I loved that the presence of Saul Panzer was mentioned.
- 32:51Speaking of that one of the things that we will give it for all listener
- 32:55donations, I mentioned that we mentioned another item. For the donations of one
