- 2:10Speaker 1: Broken and Beautiful Podcast. The Broken and Beautiful is a
- 2:14Speaker 1: collective of healers on the hunt for beauty, meaning, and transformation.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I'm Patria, the founder of The Broken and Beautiful, and
- 2:22Speaker 1: I'm just delighted that you're here. Over the past two conversations,
- 2:27Speaker 1: Lindsay has taken us on a remarkable journey from survival
- 2:30Speaker 1: into abundance and from creativity into participation.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Today we arrive at.
- 2:36Speaker 1: What may be the deepest invitation of all receiving For
- 2:41Speaker 1: many trauma survivors, myself included, giving feels natural, helping feel safe,
- 2:48Speaker 1: doing what feels familiar, receiving, being cared for, being witnessed,
- 2:55Speaker 1: trusting ourselves. Those often become the hardest work of healing.
- 3:00Speaker 1: In this final conversation, Lindsay shares beautiful reflections on rituals self, trust, agency, grace,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and what it means to slowly become whole, not through striving,
- 3:13Speaker 1: but through gentle participation with God, ourselves, and the people
- 3:18Speaker 1: who love us. Let's step back into the conversation. Many
- 3:28Speaker 1: people who have experienced trauma become really good at surviving,
- 3:33Speaker 1: you know, really good at living small, tamping down. That's
- 3:37Speaker 1: the way I would have thought of it within my
- 3:39Speaker 1: own system, but less familiar with receiving, you know, just
- 3:44Speaker 1: like I think we're talking about receiving here or the
- 3:47Speaker 1: beginnings of it. How have you noticed that shift again,
- 3:52Speaker 1: that dynamic in your healing journey.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I would give. I knew how to give.
- 4:00Speaker 3: That was part of the part of the thing. So
- 4:05Speaker 3: and the safety that came and being the one to
- 4:08Speaker 3: give like some very strong that's like where.
- 4:11Speaker 4: I can stand yeap, you know.
- 4:14Speaker 3: And I mean I see it now today with the
- 4:17Speaker 3: distance that I have, It's still here. It's still a
- 4:20Speaker 3: survival and I but I watch I can watch myself
- 4:25Speaker 3: demand to give something when no one's asking, like oh,
- 4:32Speaker 3: and so that's how I can see like the strength
- 4:35Speaker 3: in that.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Survival you know, gift. It was a gift. Yeah, it
- 4:43Speaker 4: needed to be, but.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Yeah, the receiving not receiving just keeps a whole chamber
- 4:52Speaker 3: like cut off like we are. The flow of both
- 4:56Speaker 3: is the intention, and so I don't know want else
- 5:00Speaker 3: to say, and we can't always seasons come that there's
- 5:03Speaker 3: no giving truly or you know, there's not a lot
- 5:06Speaker 3: of receiving it that, but over life, I think it's
- 5:10Speaker 3: a flow and when we notice it only we're one
- 5:14Speaker 3: chamber works, it's I you know, we're missing some of
- 5:20Speaker 3: a life I think that we're made to experience. So
- 5:24Speaker 3: for me, yeah, beautiful. Just trying to receive from a friend.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I feel like those were some of the earliest, hardest
- 5:31Speaker 3: a friend, you know, trying to encourage me or trying
- 5:35Speaker 3: to help.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Me because I was the helper.
- 5:39Speaker 3: It just felt so shame inducing to receive.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I love that wording of chamber that you used, Like,
- 5:56Speaker 1: you know, the heart is a loved up if you
- 5:59Speaker 1: listen to it, dub love dub love dub and if
- 6:01Speaker 1: all you've got to dub dub dub, you're in trouble. Yeah,
- 6:03Speaker 1: And if all you've got the love love love, so yeah,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and that just feels like that feels really true, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 1: and just such a great word picture that you gave.
- 6:14Speaker 1: It keeps you cut off from the whole chamber of
- 6:17Speaker 1: your heart. I mean, I don't know if that's what
- 6:19Speaker 1: you meant by chamber, but that's what I saw. Yeah,
- 6:24Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, that's so true. And it makes me
- 6:28Speaker 1: think about the parts of.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Us that learn how to overfunction or over bake, you know,
- 6:35Speaker 2: what we're good at.
- 6:36Speaker 1: So if we're good at giving, overgiving become safe, right.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, yes, I think too.
- 6:45Speaker 3: I just was just really parsing out this receiving and
- 6:49Speaker 3: how it grows, because I mean, when you're little, there's
- 6:51Speaker 3: no there was no one there giving, so what was
- 6:54Speaker 3: I going to be receiving?
- 6:56Speaker 4: Right?
- 6:56Speaker 3: It makes sense to have an overdeveloped chamber. Oh the
- 7:01Speaker 3: kindness there right, like of course, because that's what made
- 7:05Speaker 3: me feel alive and was helping. So receiving from myself,
- 7:12Speaker 3: like I can actually give myself something that is giving.
- 7:16Speaker 3: So I'm still using it, but to taste a couple
- 7:21Speaker 3: of drops of like kindness to myself, you know. I mean,
- 7:26Speaker 3: I I don't know if that was first or last.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I mean I'm thinking not first, but in order to
- 7:32Speaker 3: really open up to receiving from others, really operate in
- 7:37Speaker 3: that it has taken receiving from me, meaning.
- 7:41Speaker 1: You have to accept yourself messy, unpredictable. I mean you,
- 7:52Speaker 1: I don't know if those are your those are my words.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I don't know what your words might be.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Well, I'm remembering a time where a wise guy I said,
- 8:00Speaker 3: could you put a post it this as I am
- 8:02Speaker 3: trustworthy on your head.
- 8:06Speaker 2: With your you know, inside of your eyelids.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:10Speaker 3: That felt like the most painful thing to do, and
- 8:14Speaker 3: I couldn't do it, you know, at the beginning.
- 8:17Speaker 4: But to receive.
- 8:19Speaker 3: That truth about myself, yeah, you know, to give it in,
- 8:24Speaker 3: to receive it, I think changed my life. So yeah,
- 8:29Speaker 3: I think that's what I'm talking about, receiving from yourself.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so good.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I love that you brought that in because I believe
- 8:40Speaker 1: that at least one of the very few primary problems
- 8:45Speaker 1: of trauma, like the things that that get baked into
- 8:49Speaker 1: us because of trauma, one of them is lack of
- 8:51Speaker 1: trust of self and that so that puts us into
- 8:55Speaker 1: a perpetual dismissal of our own needs. Are any mistake
- 9:01Speaker 1: that we made is the chasm. It's like this cavernous
- 9:06Speaker 1: yawn of I told you so you know, I mean, like,
- 9:09Speaker 1: there's no room for like creativity because you don't have
- 9:14Speaker 1: room for a mistake.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Creativity by nature is mistake full. It's full of mistakes.
- 9:20Speaker 1: So yeah, I just really love that you brought that
- 9:24Speaker 1: in and I do think that, I mean, I can
- 9:27Speaker 1: say that that has been huge for me too in
- 9:30Speaker 1: my own life, and it's one thing that I do
- 9:32Speaker 1: give out at particular moments as reminders of the goodness
- 9:39Speaker 1: of yourself, like and I think again for trauma survivors,
- 9:44Speaker 1: the goodness of God, yes, but the goodness of you
- 9:49Speaker 1: is the question.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Yes, that's what's called into question.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 3: What most of us don't if we have a bath,
- 9:59Speaker 3: don't struggle that God is good or even that God
- 10:02Speaker 3: loves me. It's that I can love me that I
- 10:06Speaker 3: could agree. That's right about so good I am that's yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Well totally.
- 10:11Speaker 1: When you're swallowed up in the curses and you just
- 10:15Speaker 1: your survival means I had to agree with them, then
- 10:20Speaker 1: how you you can't? You know, that's that's the inching
- 10:24Speaker 1: toward a different choice that you you're talking about in
- 10:27Speaker 1: the beginning.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Oh, I could talk about this forever.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Okay, I'm going to keep moving not because I don't
- 10:32Speaker 1: want to talk about that longer, but I do want
- 10:34Speaker 1: to get to this next question, which is about rituals.
- 10:37Speaker 1: You know, I know that Lindsay you have mentioned rituals
- 10:40Speaker 1: and they become really meaningful for you and healing. Can
- 10:45Speaker 1: you share anything that feels kind to yourself speaking of
- 10:49Speaker 1: kindness to yourself, to share with others about what rituals
- 10:53Speaker 1: have come to.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Mean to you.
- 10:55Speaker 3: So, at a point in my healing journey, I felt
- 11:00Speaker 3: the invitation was to really mark the things that had
- 11:05Speaker 3: changed internally in an external way with people in my
- 11:10Speaker 3: life that have been watching and walking and you know
- 11:13Speaker 3: know me, I just internally felt like that was my
- 11:18Speaker 3: next you know, it was an invitation. It did not
- 11:22Speaker 3: feel like I had to do it, but it was
- 11:25Speaker 3: a next doorway into the more that I want. I mean, unfortunately,
- 11:30Speaker 3: and fortunately I don't think I'm ever not gonna want more.
- 11:32Speaker 4: So I'm going.
- 11:35Speaker 3: To you know, want more than I'm gonna need to
- 11:39Speaker 3: do more, or do I want to do more?
- 11:41Speaker 4: So that's why how much more?
- 11:42Speaker 3: To me?
- 11:43Speaker 4: It's like how much how much more do I want? Well?
- 11:45Speaker 4: How much more will I do? You know?
- 11:47Speaker 2: Love that?
- 11:48Speaker 3: So with God as the writer and co creator. I
- 11:54Speaker 3: formed a ritual ceremony that had several elements, but one
- 11:59Speaker 3: for me was a three strand rope that I unbraided
- 12:05Speaker 3: and needed to do that to help because the lies
- 12:09Speaker 3: and the truth in my identity were so twisted from
- 12:12Speaker 3: my developmental trauma, you know relationally that I mean years
- 12:18Speaker 3: of therapy and help and looking and naming, and it
- 12:23Speaker 3: still felt twisted. But actually having to name the pieces
- 12:28Speaker 3: of rope, the evil and the good and pull them apart,
- 12:35Speaker 3: and I kept the good and preserve them in a
- 12:38Speaker 3: beautiful way, and I burned the lies like that was
- 12:44Speaker 3: so good for me, would be to understate it. I
- 12:48Speaker 3: needed that, you know, to unstick like I had been
- 12:53Speaker 3: working at it for so long, and it was still stuck.
- 12:57Speaker 3: But naming those things and pulling it apart in front
- 13:01Speaker 3: of my people and burning what I didn't want anymore
- 13:05Speaker 3: truly changed like my internal like the rest that I
- 13:09Speaker 3: have now, I don't feel twisted anymore. So it's mysterious,
- 13:16Speaker 3: miraculous and so physical and practical. There wasn't anything magic, yep.
- 13:23Speaker 3: But I met myself there and I used my authority,
- 13:28Speaker 3: my voice, you know, my people to witness, and said
- 13:34Speaker 3: what I had to say about it. I took what
- 13:36Speaker 3: I wanted and burned what I didn't.
- 13:46Speaker 1: There's something about the proclamation like your decision in that sense,
- 13:53Speaker 1: like this is my decision. I'm keeping this and I'm
- 13:57Speaker 1: not keeping this agency agency. Oh yeah, right, that authority,
- 14:04Speaker 1: you're inner authority like yes, yes and no consent.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Yeah, which I believe is a part of the fingerprint
- 14:11Speaker 3: of God in us, and so to access that and
- 14:16Speaker 3: stand on it is like connecting with the image of
- 14:19Speaker 3: God in me.
- 14:20Speaker 4: So I think that's why it was so impactful.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Yeah, oh my gosh, so so beautiful.
- 14:31Speaker 1: So that was a big like experience of a ritual
- 14:35Speaker 1: that that was a one kind of a one time.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Kind of It makes me think about.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Baptism as you're talking about it today, you know, that
- 14:43Speaker 1: sort of external expression of the internal experience and putting
- 14:50Speaker 1: something outside of yourself. How else, like in everyday life
- 14:53Speaker 1: or in your normal normal life, you know, quote unquote
- 14:58Speaker 1: do how do rituals help you to connected with yourself
- 15:01Speaker 1: with people important to you?
- 15:03Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 15:04Speaker 3: Yeah, A new, newer one has been and I'm definitely
- 15:09Speaker 3: a window of tolerance, you know. Eight nine person, I
- 15:12Speaker 3: don't really know what it means to like, what's the
- 15:16Speaker 3: word hyper?
- 15:18Speaker 4: That's not me.
- 15:18Speaker 3: It's hyper, at least on the inside. And so what
- 15:22Speaker 3: I've been doing the last couple of years is it
- 15:26Speaker 3: was felt like an imitation. When I feel that, like
- 15:30Speaker 3: I know what it is. It's faster, it's overwhelmed, it's
- 15:33Speaker 3: I have to do something, you know, to be safe,
- 15:37Speaker 3: to take care. I can tell now thanks to all
- 15:42Speaker 3: of the work in the time what's happening, and that
- 15:46Speaker 3: for me has been to get on my knees with
- 15:48Speaker 3: my forehead on the ground and just breathe and just
- 15:53Speaker 3: be like I can't do it. I don't have it.
- 15:56Speaker 3: I don't want to go into that space. And so
- 16:00Speaker 3: I'm just gonna be a puddle on the floor because
- 16:03Speaker 3: I kind of feel like a puddle on the floor
- 16:05Speaker 3: right now, and I just like say help. I mean,
- 16:10Speaker 3: it isn't anything you know, rehearsed. And I wait until
- 16:17Speaker 3: I've learned that grace can feel like a flow or
- 16:20Speaker 3: a drop of water, like there's an energy to grace,
- 16:24Speaker 3: and I'll be like, okay, I think I can get
- 16:26Speaker 3: up now. And often it doesn't feel very different, but
- 16:31Speaker 3: I know that I did not move forward in frantic
- 16:35Speaker 3: you know, not survival is not bad, so I wasn't
- 16:40Speaker 3: trying not to survive, but like just the frantic self
- 16:46Speaker 3: will like self preservation, like demand without a choice, you know.
- 16:52Speaker 3: I feel like they took my choice, yeah, and was
- 16:56Speaker 3: like I need something in this moment, like I'm obviously
- 16:59Speaker 3: not okay. I think that's really been the thing that's
- 17:01Speaker 3: in that ritual has helped me.
- 17:03Speaker 4: It's a name. Something doesn't feel okay.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'm just going to take it a second,
- 17:08Speaker 3: you know, And that's amazing. Little ritual really has like
- 17:13Speaker 3: changed me how I show up for myself, how I
- 17:17Speaker 3: feel about being anxious. It doesn't like freak me out anymore,
- 17:21Speaker 3: you know.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Wow, you know, I'm thinking, I don't know if I've
- 17:28Speaker 1: ever heard you say there's an energy to grace.
- 17:33Speaker 2: And I know you said a.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Lot of important things after that, but I have to
- 17:37Speaker 1: admit that I kind of got caught right there as
- 17:39Speaker 1: you were just talking because it was so beautiful. It's
- 17:42Speaker 1: so important. I can feel the importance of that. Can
- 17:44Speaker 1: you say, like I heard you say, the energy of
- 17:47Speaker 1: grace affects your capacity to slow down. It's like a
- 17:54Speaker 1: maybe an invitation to slower, an invitation to come back
- 17:58Speaker 1: to presence to choice. But can you add anymore or
- 18:04Speaker 1: made that's enough and that's it's plenty, But could you
- 18:07Speaker 1: add anymore to that idea of there's an energy to grace.
- 18:13Speaker 2: I just love that language. It's really beautiful.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it's mysterious, but I think it's often I don't
- 18:21Speaker 3: know what to do, and that will make me feel
- 18:24Speaker 3: paralyzed because in survival I always did something and it says, well,
- 18:30Speaker 3: I don't want to do that, because the doing something
- 18:33Speaker 3: usually just perpetuates my anxiety totally.
- 18:36Speaker 4: So, but I don't know what to do.
- 18:38Speaker 3: So the energy of grace, if I will kind of
- 18:40Speaker 3: wait for it or look for it, it's like just
- 18:42Speaker 3: that one next step, that one next breath, It like
- 18:48Speaker 3: it will carry me to to the thing.
- 18:52Speaker 4: But I just not. I wish it had said he
- 18:56Speaker 4: can step. You just said that's flow.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Yeah, but yeah, we have to get quiet. I have
- 19:03Speaker 3: to not use my own strength. I have to look
- 19:07Speaker 3: for that and then you know, it's like a little whisper,
- 19:11Speaker 3: a wind of something, an energy. I would describe it
- 19:13Speaker 3: as an energy. Yeah, it's not usually intense.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I used to This is reminding me.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I haven't thought about it in a long time, but
- 19:23Speaker 1: I used to experience I would call it that hearing
- 19:29Speaker 1: from from Jesus or just like that that place of
- 19:32Speaker 1: feeling held as like an opposite energy of me. It
- 19:38Speaker 1: would be like if I'm flowing this way, it would
- 19:41Speaker 1: be a current the other direction. That just kind of
- 19:44Speaker 1: woke me up and gave me a sense of something
- 19:47Speaker 1: like that wasn't the way I was going, And so
- 19:49Speaker 1: there was like a sense of that's not me. You know,
- 19:54Speaker 1: that's not something I would have thought of.
- 19:56Speaker 2: That gave me.
- 19:58Speaker 1: A focal point outside of myself maybe to receive something different.
- 20:02Speaker 1: So I don't know, I'm just kind of thinking out loud,
- 20:04Speaker 1: but that's coming to my mind. And one thing I
- 20:07Speaker 1: appreciate about your perspective, Lindsay, is that you have really
- 20:12Speaker 1: disentangled performance from creativity and it feels so connected to participation.
- 20:20Speaker 1: In fact, I think you used that word, and so
- 20:23Speaker 1: can you just talk a little bit about the distinction
- 20:25Speaker 1: between participation and performance and what that's come to mean
- 20:29Speaker 1: to you.
- 20:30Speaker 3: I guess in light of what we've just been talking about,
- 20:32Speaker 3: it's a different energy. There's a different drive to performance
- 20:38Speaker 3: and participation. You participate generally because you're invited to so
- 20:45Speaker 3: it's a beautiful piece of it. True, and you perform generally.
- 20:53Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Demand comes to mind with performance, not always, but performance
- 20:58Speaker 3: is often a job and you.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Have to do it to get paid to achieve.
- 21:03Speaker 3: The things of those that the energy and the motive
- 21:09Speaker 3: is so different, even though the action can look the same.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Yep, yeah, something inside changes. Oh that's so good. And
- 21:19Speaker 1: again I wish I could sit and talk for hours,
- 21:22Speaker 1: but for the sake of your time and our listener's time,
- 21:28Speaker 1: for someone who's listening who feels disconnected from themselves, maybe
- 21:32Speaker 1: just completely exhausted by survival or unsure where to begin.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And I know you talked a little bit about this,
- 21:39Speaker 1: but as we've been continuing to talk, what else, what
- 21:42Speaker 1: gentle invitations would you offer them?
- 21:45Speaker 3: What makes me think of it could feel too big
- 21:47Speaker 3: of a step at the beginning, but also it's bold.
- 21:51Speaker 3: You know, your body knows something of what you've been holding, carrying,
- 21:58Speaker 3: pushing through.
- 22:00Speaker 4: So even the slightest nod like how are you holding this?
- 22:05Speaker 1: Oh?
- 22:05Speaker 3: I notice you know, I have the tension that can
- 22:10Speaker 3: be Yeah, I'm probably really stressed out. I hold it
