Transcript
- Micaiah: Hello everybody. It is good to be back with you. It is post week three, Sunday, post week three, a recap for everyone. How are you doing? I'm your host, Captain Boring. I am back and better than ever. Big shout out to ⁓ aka aka ring man for filling in for me last week as I was on vacation at the beach. We had another full slate of college of football. It was an epic week. The top 10 upset, kind of Close games early that scared a lot of teams. So we're gonna ⁓ we got a full 30 minutes for you today. I'm really excited about it. So we will just go ahead and ⁓ jump right in to Friday night, which was Texas Tech and Houston. Listen, I don't know really after this game how good the top, the top being Texas Tech in this case, the top of the big 12 is. Is like I don't know how good Texas Tech is. I don't know how good the Big 12 is at a conference, but what I do know is that Houston's a solid team, and the Big 12 is going to produce a fiery competitor for whoever it puts in the college football playoff. ⁓ by by no means was this a runaway. Houston had the ball, two-point conversion. Connor Wegman j down just short of the goal line. So it's 28-26. Texas Tech ran for 168 yards. They did pretty well on the ground. I mean, this game was like even across the board. Connor Wegman, 27 of 38, 282, three touchdowns. Will Hammond, 17 of 27, 257, a touchdown and an interception. Like they both had Kuby Yards over 70. Both teams rushed about five yards a carry. It ⁓ only one turnover in this game by Connor Wegman, which ended up being the difference. So I'm not really sure how good Texas Tech is, but for some in the same manner, I'm gonna talk out the both sides of my mouth, I know that Houston's a solid team. I know that Texas Tech is a solid team too, but I am very comfortable if these two teams met again, probably picking Houston. Like that's how good like I think a lot of people thought that the Big 12 was going to be run away with by Texas Tech. And that's just simply not the case. Now, Texas Tech's schedule is soft, so it might look like they're run away with it, but but Arizona State's a solid team. Colorado, they'll push around. You know, they got Arizona, West Virginia's playing really good ball. We'll get to them in a minute. Oklahoma State just had the upset and then just they look back, they look to be in North Texas, right? High powered vertical offense. Baylor, TCU, two really good teams. So I don't know that Texas Tech is just gonna mud stomp every single opponent that they run into. But what I do know is that they're gonna be a solid team and they're gonna be balanced running and throwing. And then Houston on the other side, if you like their schedule is almost the same. They got West Virginia, they got O Oklahoma State. They have Utah yet, but they can compete with all of these teams. I mean, Utah's kind of sleeping in the big no one's really paying attention to Utah because Kyle Winningham left and took to Michigan. And in people including myself thought, well, no, you just can't keep up. 30 plus years of excellence that Kyle Winningham gave you or was a part of, and just continue that. Well, so far this year, it is that that that opinion is wrong. So good on like the Big 12 is just gonna be very fascinating, very fun to watch, and I'm here for it. This was a very exciting game to watch, and a very hold your attention game for sure. All right. Now let's flip over to Saturday. Like I said, ⁓ we got a really full show today, so it's not gonna be long on any one topic, ⁓ but we will just see what we get into. We will flip over to inventing a new way to lose. Teams in the last 20 years were like 1,410 and one when they had the ball with less than 10 seconds left and they were winning. The only loss being 2016 Michigan, Michigan State. Trouble with the snap. ⁓ when the punter dropped the ball, Michigan State returned it for a touchdown. Well, now we are, whatever it is, ⁓ a thousand more than a thousand and two because NC State invented a way to lose the game. So they are up three with the ball on their own three-yard line. So it is close to their end zone, but they are up three with about six seconds left. They decide. To try it is fourth down. They decide to try to snap the ball and just waste the clock. But if anything were to happen, you can go to you can throw the ball out of bounds with no time left. You can ⁓ go down for a safety and then punt the ball and and ⁓ Vanderbilt's gonna have like one second left. Well, the unimaginable happened. So why the quarterback kind of took the snap and was shifting right, you know, trying to let the clock wear down when he when people came at him. ⁓ and he was falling to the ground. He got contacted, he fumbled the football, Vanderbilt recovered, and they scored a touchdown. And NC State lost the game. So it's a new way to lose. No one has ever seen that before. I've never seen that before. Again, they there are 99 problems to solve that solution, and they chose the one answer. The one Doctor Strange hypothetical that caused them to lose the game. So that is a bummer for them, for sure. ⁓ NC State is now one and two. Vanderbilt, I believe, is three and ⁓ now. pulling that up now. Vanderbilt is 3 0. NCL, I mean, Dave Dorian could not have had a worse start to the season by any coach. You get just mollywapped in week zero. You come back, you're looking okay. You have this game one, an SE like on the road in an SEC environment. And you have the game one and you piss it away. So that just not a good look by Dave Dorian. Again, I think he's gonna be fired by week six. Along with Greg Ciano of Rutgers. So USC came calling. I thought this was going to be just a mud stomping, a look away, stop it, he's dead already, sort of game. I think ⁓ SC fans, USC fans might have a defense problem. So I looked back. In three of four games, they've allowed over 330 yards. The last two games they've allowed over 350 yards. And yesterday to Rutgers, they gave up 460 yards. One yard less than what SC had on the day. Love their offense. Jaden Maiava, their running game is very solid. They ran for 184 yards at six yards a clip. Like I turned the game on because Ruckers kept it close. By the way, 42-35 final. SC wins. And Ruckers kept it close, but every time SC had the ball, it was just turn around and give it to the back. Turn around and give it to the back. And it was like six yards a pop. And Ruckers just could not stop them. But Rutgers, credit to them. I mean, they had two turnovers on the day, which probably save SC. They held the ball for longer. They had one less yard of total offense. So I again Dave Dorian is only saved by the fact that Greg Ciano is coaching at Rutgers because it's not great right now. And I felt like this was their last stand. I don't know who let's see who's I know they just gave him a contract extension. They get Howard, they better win that because then they get Indiana. Maryland's a toss up. I would say Northwestern looked awesome. Again, Chip Kelly's got that offense rolling. Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Penn State, Michigan State. Not great. I think he's gone at if Indiana hangs like 90 on him. And that's a little hyperbole. I don't think Kirk Zinetti would do that, unless if Rutgers truly has just given up. But they're looking at maybe a two-win season. Maybe a two-win season. It's not great. Flip it over to the SC side. gonna have to find a defense. You are young, you start a lot of true freshmen, or you play a lot of true freshmen. Either way, your depth is lacking, which that will come because you have a lot of true freshmen, assuming you can keep them in house. But you have Oregon, who just hung 84 on Portland State, and Oregon has its own problems. You're at Penn State in two weeks. That place is gonna be bonkers, and Rocco Beck, the Matt Campbell has happy valley rolling. Ohio State, Indiana, yet. These are all teams that can score and score a lot. And your defense has now looked porous and tired when you get past the starters. SC fans, you can tell me that I'm wrong about my opinion about the Coliseum, as you did. And I appreciate the engagement. But I don't think you'll tell me that I'm wrong about your defense. Your defense is I love your offense. Lincoln Riley, when he is hot and he has a quarterback that keeps the ball moving forward and keeps the change moving forward as he du as he did in ⁓ Baker, Kyler, and Jalen. And now again with Maiava. He's the best play caller in all of college football. He's the best, but when he has a quarterback that can do that. Took a few years off. Caleb Williams never played on schedule for him. Spencer Rattler, too many mistake prompt, but ⁓ he's got a dude now. They're gonna score 40 a game, but my worry is that they're gonna have to outscore people to get to 40 to win games. And I don't, and that's not a survivable way in the Big Ten, especially when you Go to Penn State and go to Indiana and UCLA can put up points all of a sudden. Bob Chesney has them rolling. So something to keep an eye on with SC. Unfortunately, we are halfway to Greg Ciano getting fired. I am decently, decently sure of it. Another def ⁓ team that can score a lot but has a defense problem, that would be the Louisville Cardinal. They scored 41. They won the game. They're two and one. They honestly kind of look like they can go toe-to-toe with Miami, and they probably can and they probably will. Do they play Miami in the regular season? They don't play Miami in the regular season. So this could be as long as we don't ⁓ have a classic Jeff Brahm beat a big team and then next week they go to Wake Forest at noon on ESPN and lay an egg. As long as we don't have any of that, their schedule isn't d their schedule isn't that bad. They do have Florida State that can Score now. They turned the ball over, but they can score. Stanford got their butts kicked yes yesterday. Georgia Tech, not good up front. North Carolina, yeah. Pitt and Kentucky that can score a lot of points now. So as long as they their defense can get some stops and get some turnovers, which they did yesterday, Lincoln Keenholz is playing really, really well. He was 14 to 23, 177 through the air. Two touchdowns, QBR, 65. That's fine. But they ran for 265 yards, 7.2 yards of carry carry. Keywon Brown, not Isaac Brown, Keywan Brown, 10 carries, 163 yards. For those of you bad at math, that's 16.3 yards a carry. He was unstoppable every time he touched the ball. He's not even their best running back. Their best running back, Isaac Brown, who's had a slow start to the season. He had 10 carries for 67 yards. Again, for the people bad at math, no shame. It's difficult. Your brain just works differently. That's 6.7 yards a carry. And then Kevin Jennings, two interceptions and a costly fumble going into cut the lead to three, fumbles it out of the back of the end zone. You just so Kevin Jennings in like they could have lost a floor state game because of four turnovers. Now they had another three turnovers, Kevin Jennings did, and they and they did lose the game. People were saying this is for second place in the ACC. Both these teams can win the ACC. Both of these teams can go toe-to-toe with Miami. I don't think SMU can anymore because until they cleaned up the turnovers, but Louisville definitely can, as long as their defense gets stops, because it did not get stops against Ole Miss, and that hurt them. And they did not get stops against SMU until late, with late turnovers. But Jeff Brahm knows how to call ⁓ an offense. And he's got a quarterback that can move around a little bit and can improvise on the run. 12 carries, 42 yards, and a touchdown as well for Lincoln. Watch out for the Cardinal now. They are they Jeff Brahm's got dude. Jeff Brahm's got a squad. As long as they can get some stops on defense, I think them NSC, whoo, that would be an exciting game. ⁓ I I said it was gonna be high scoring take the over and ⁓ hopefully you did because it it was seventy two. The over was like fifty four, fifty five. I either way it hit. Either way it hit. ⁓ Kentucky went into colestation at Texas AM, got wildly hot, and beat the number nine team in the country by 10 points. Kentucky. Offensively inept Kentucky in years past. This is what a good play caller can do. Will Stein. I don't think gets enough credit and maybe he will at the end of the season if Oregon season keeps going the way that it is. Will Stein, I don't think, gets enough credit for the job he did at Oregon, being the offensive coordinator. Because he went in and he attacked them. They did ha get two turnovers and a few turnovers on down, but this is just their. Let me start with Kentucky's. They score a touchdown to tie the game 7-7 in the second quarter. And here's their drive chart from that point on. This was with five ten. ⁓ I'm sorry. This was with they scored with two minutes to go in the half, just outside of two minutes to go. So since then, they got the ball once. It was the end of half. Here we go. Third quarter. They went touchdown, touchdown, touchdown. Field goal, punt, punt, end of game. Texas AM punted, touchdown, turned the ball over on Downs. Kentucky turned that into a touchdown. AM responded with the touchdown, field goal, and then AM threw an interception. And then Kentucky kind of cooled off at the end. But Will Stein went in there and has changed this philosophy of this Kentucky team, which is we're no longer relying on defense as we did under the previous old administration. We are going in, we are stuck. Swinging with haymakers, and we are trying to knock you out. And that's what they did. And I think it's gonna take a minute for everyone in the SEC, and maybe this it was the minute that ⁓ hey, they they don't want to be in a defensive game anymore. If they have to, sure, but they want to get up and down the field and they're gonna score a lot of points. So it it just play calling makes a world of difference. And there are not enough guys who are good play callers right now in college football that get the credit that they deserve. And the Mike Elko defense fell apart and just got shredded for 408 yards. AM had a good offensive day, 423, but it was the two turnovers that killed them and the turnovers on down in their own territory when they felt like they were losing control of the game. ⁓ the weather I I can't remember a time where weather has been this impactful this early in a college football season this many weeks in a row. Normally get one or two weeks where a game or two is delayed. And you might have a total of three. Every single week we've had weather delays. Long weather delays. Yesterday we had two of them. Again, Clemson, North Carolina. As a Michigan fan that got bailed out by one second being put back on the clock. Correct call and correct procedure. Clemson got bailed out by the weather. North Carolina was, they ran the ball for 214 yards, 5.5 yards a carry. They could not be stopped. In the first quarter, first half, could not be stopped. Third quarter, they they were dead, couldn't do anything. Got that running game going in the third quarter again, just as Clemson started to get hot. Got it all the way down to the 10-yard line, running the ball. Game got delayed. They were going to, at that point in time. I just wanna see. Mm. 'Cause that was in the Four yes. So it was seventeen fifteen at that time. They went all the way down and they were going to score a touchdown and go up twenty-four to fifteen midway through the fourth quarter. Game got delayed. They came back out, much different Clemson team. They could run the football all of a sudden. They s they stopped the ⁓ the running game of the Tar Heels, and then North Carolina just forgot how to how to tackle. And the start and stopping of the weather ⁓ played an impact. Shout out to Clemson for winning this game and regrouping. But absolutely, they were going to lose this game. It was going to be a nine-point game with about eight minutes left to go in that game. And I don't think Clemson comes back from that, especially with how they were playing. And I think now and then the conversation would have started. Meanwhile. North Carolina could have won that game two and one. Clemson's two and one. I don't neither of these teams are contenders with Miami and Louisville at the top. But they're both above 500, both rocking and rolling along. And I think North Carolina is a better team than people give them credit for. If they, if Bobby Petrino gets this running game going, it's gonna be much better. Billy Edwards did not play good down the stretch, but I North Carolina is better than people, than people give them ⁓ credit for, for sure. The weather also impacted ⁓ Alabama, Florida State. So about two minutes before the half. So first of all, the game was delayed about an hour or two hours, well over two hours. Then it delays it for another 30 minutes right before halftime. So this game didn't have a halftime. Well it did have a halftime just with lightning and due to weather. It was it was real weird. They went to halftime just came back and played the third quarter. It it was kind of weird ⁓ to to watch. Florida State were running, throwing, real balanced. It was 21 to 3, 21 to 6, I believe. I'm looking it up now. I apologize. I want to get the correct story. It was 21 to 6. The weather delay, and then it was 2113. The weather delay happened and Alabama got this thing rolling. Alabama can run the football now. And everyone that hated Ryan Grubb and everyone that hated Caitlin DeBore because they pay West Coast soft football, they're running the ball now. 247 yards on the ground. They had 567 yards. Florida State had three turnovers on the day, but they had four hundred and seventy one total yards as well. 50 to 36. Alabama's drive chart from second quarter on is crazy. Field goal, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, end of half, touchdown, touchdown, field goal, touchdown, end of game. Calen DeBoor's got something. How good, like I think Florida State's offense is pretty good as long as they don't turn the ball over. I think Florida State's offense is very good, which again, we'll we'll see about it how long Mike Mike Norvell keeps his job. He's a very good play caller, probably should have always been calling plays. But Alabama can run the football now. They've done it three straight weeks. How will that impact that? And they get South Carolina, Mississippi State, they got a dog. They in Comario Taylor Camario Taylor is a dude. So they got a dog. Then Georgia, Tennessee, AM, LSU, Vanderbilt, Auburn. If they sustain this running game, this it's gonna Alabama's gonna be hard to beat. And This supposedly is a really good Alabama defense. Again, I I think Mike Nike Mike Norvell is a terrific play caller, and Florida State's offense is going to be pretty good this year. So we'll have to see how that works out. And we'll have to see if their defense is really as good as ⁓ it is advertised. But listen, Alabama, they're dynamic now on offense. Another SEC game, John Summer. Listen. Florida Auburn. John Summerl's got something cooking down in the swamp. He comes from that Sabin tree a little bit. 4439. Jaden Ball. Listen, listen, listen. They got a dude. Florida ran for 243 yards and four touchdowns. Jaden Ball ran for 162 of that and three touchdowns. Aaron Philo, 15 of 22, 204 yards, one touchdown, one interception. QBR of 90 on the road. QBR of 90 on the road. Auburn had a good game, too. They're running game that leaves something to be desired. But if I'm an Auburn fan, things are bright. And these are the two newbies. They each had a turnover. These are the two newbies. Florida just dominated them on the ground. They held the ball for 40 minutes of time of possession, double the time of possession. And it was just turn around, hand the ball off, turn around, hand the ball off, turn around, hand the ball off. 30 seconds, 30 seconds, 30, and it just went wore Auburn down. John Summerls got something cooking in Gainesville. And he seems to be doing it with toughness and we're gonna do things the right way and show up to class and be on time and run the football and play good defense. Watch out for the Gators now. This was a very exciting game. However, it did not ⁓ keep my attention away or what one more game and then we'll get to that. West Virginia, we called it and ⁓ shout out to the guy on TikTok who who told us we were gonna be wrong. And then when it turned out we were right when I was right about this, came back and said, shout out to you. You were right. Rich Rod's got something cooking now. They ran for 247 yards, five yards a pop, three touchdowns. And this game was going to be who can establish their offensive line, line of scrimmage. You would have thought it would have been the Cavaliers with their sixth and seventh year starters. 37, 100 37 carries, 157 yards, 4.2 yards a carry for Virginia. 4.8 yards of carry, 51 times. Michael Hawkins, very efficient. 17, 10 to 17, 190 yards, two touchdowns. QBR, 98. That's out of 100. Bo Prabula, I said I wanted to see what happens when he is made into a drop back passer quarterback. Got our answer. 21 to 33, not terrible, but 197 yards, two touchdowns. QBR, 65. He's average. And that's okay. But Virginia's got to run the ball. And West Virginia, Rich Rod's got something cooking. Rich Rod has re found his identity in running the ball again. Kind of got away from it. And they were kind of more, you know, a little bit there for his career. He wanted to spread things out and throw things a little more. He's getting back to running the ball. It's working. Michael Hawkins, 123 yards on the ground and three touchdowns as well. Well, West Virginia might be back, folks. And in the Big 12, that's wide open, as I previously stated. ⁓ man. What just watch out for West Virginia? ⁓ the game of the day. LSU Ole Miss lived up to the hype. So Ole Miss jumps out to a 24 7 lead. Trinidad Chamblist right down at the end of the half, right down the field is 24 7. They needed that because here come the Tagas. They come all the way back in the second half. Trinidad chew Trinidad threw an interception. Sam Levitt turned it into points. And then that started the tie game into the fourth. And then Ole Miss went down, scored a touchdown, made a ballsy call. So they were tied at 24. Ole Miss went down, made a very ballsy call, scored the touchdown to go for two. Because I'm assuming Pete Golding knew that if LSU scored a touchdown. And if if Olmus would have kicked the field, well, LSU have scored the scored the touchdown, they would have gone for two. So it was he was just getting ahead of it. He was just getting ahead of it. So they score the two. Trinidad Chambliss was masterful last night. He reminds me a lot of Baker Mayfield. Shorter, pretty athletic for college, moves around, very accurate with the football. 33 of 48, 363, two touchdowns. Did have that interception. QBR of 90. Here's the thing. LSU did not let them run the ball. 2.5 yards a carry. 25 carries, 63 yards. Keywon Lacy, who left the game only 43 yards. LSU wanting to run the ball. Lane Kiffin wants to run the ball. Buck 72, 4 yards a carry. They just got behind early and they and they an avalanche just hit them early. I was very impressed. No one threw anything on the field. No one, I'm sure there were names being called, but no one threw anything at Lane Kiffin. No one acted a fool. No one rushed the field afterwards. Everything was calm and and ⁓ copacetic there. like at least on the field. So kudos to the fan base of Ole Miss for not making things worse than they could have, Maine. I think if they play, and I sent this in the chat. And it is not agreed upon. The sad part about this game is not the sad part, if you're an LSU, I still think you can win the national championship. If you get the running game going and Sam Levitt just plays a little better within the offense as the offense grows, LSU can win the because the defense is nasty. The defense can hold up their end of the bargain. And then as you like, Ole Miss didn't do anything. After halftime, except for that final drive. They did nothing. So your defense showed up, your offense clawed you back into the game, and then you just ran into Chin Trinidad Chambless, right? So at the at the end of the game, you can still win the national title. Robert doesn't agree with me. Simeon doesn't agree with me. That's fine. I'm telling you, LSU could still win the national title. I don't think they will. I think there are some other teams ahead of them. that I would rank out of them, specifically Miami and Notre Dame. But, and and George, I mean, Georgia hasn't they played Arkansas yesterday, so they haven't really played anyone. But I it college football is a process. And this is a good starting point for Lane Kiffin. I they're farther ahead of where I thought they would be. Clemson's not very good, and I get that. But if they get the running game going and Sam Levitt stops turning the ball over, they're much better. Finally, Michigan. All I'm gonna say is Michigan UTEP. Michigan did end up covering this game, even though they were down for 14 7. Michigan has a fumbling problem. Two weeks ago, they had two fumbles. One ⁓ Bryce Underwood fumbled. They fumbled a kickoff, and then Bryce Underwood threw an interception in week one. Last week they had two fumbles, recovered them both. So that's four. Yesterday, two fumbles Bryce Underwood and Savion Heider. Both those were the 14 of the minor 17 points. Michigan has a fumbling problem, but they look so much better. Bryce Underwood throwing the ball yesterday, 19 to 25, 223, two touchdowns. ⁓ they ran the ball for four yards of carry, 185. I would like to see better blocking for the running backs. Underwood only ran the ball six times, but they got Andrew Marsh involved, JJ Buchanan involved. Like the passing game was opened up a little bit, which is what yesterday's game was all about. And I will say this, and I'm not putting anyone on the hot seat, but I called it back in the spring. Tommy Carr mechanically offense, understanding offense, all that is exactly where Bryce Underwood is right now, after seeing yesterday. He's exactly where Bryce Underwood is. And the only reason Bryce Underwood is starting is because he was already there and they're paying him $12 million. And they're not paying Tommy Carr that much. But if Bryce Underwood says, I'm out of here at the end of the season, maybe he'll come back, maybe not. Tommy Carr, I think will just it's just a seamless transition. So just something to keep an eye on. But Bryce Underwood did look good yesterday. He played pretty well. But Michigan has a fumbling problem, and they're going to have to clean that up because it If there's one team you don't want to turn the ball over against, it's Iowa next week, 330 CBS, because they are what you they are they are good defense with Phil Parker, defensive coordinator, good special teams, even though they lost their special teams coach. And they run the football and they do play action. So you turn the ball over, you're not going to get many possessions, and we're in a Western Michigan game. Defense, by the way, Robert, I got to call you out a little bit here, bud. I don't know. If you'll listen to this or not. ⁓ you said the defense is getting soft after they gave up ⁓ the touchdown off of the second fumble. ⁓ after that point, I saw a stat that UTEP it the game wasn't over, but UTEP had like three yards. The defense turned it up and played violent and nasty yesterday, and and they're gonna have to be an odd the total yardage from yesterday for UTEP was 150 yards. 150. So, Robert, I'm gonna call you out on that. ⁓ defense was not soft at all yesterday. So that's just where we are. All right, folks, that's 33 minutes of your time. Thank you so much. ⁓ tune in Tuesday evening, Wednesday. We're gonna have another loaded full show for you. Recap a little more game in in depth. I kind of touched on a lot. We're just gonna take the big ones and focus on them. We're gonna get you all set up for week four. It always goes so fast, but week four is right around the corner. We got some big games. Texas, Tennessee, ⁓ Notre Dame, Purdue. I'm just kidding. Oklahoma, Georgia. I think that's a dog route there. Ole Miss Florida in the swamp. Just watch out for them. Iowa, Michigan.
