- 0:34Speaker 3: Express Pros Pro of the Week. The Pro of the
- 0:36Speaker 3: Week goes to Red Star shortstop Elie De La Cruz,
- 0:39Speaker 3: who had a home run last night against the Dodgers.
- 0:42Speaker 3: He is now homered in five straight games. becoming only
- 0:45Speaker 3: the 10th player in Reds history to do so. Congrats
- 0:47Speaker 3: to Ellie De La Cruz for being our Express Pros
- 0:50Speaker 3: Pro of the Week.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yes, congratulations. No one's paying attention. Football season has started.
- 0:54Speaker 1: We have let an angry Sal Licata go. His microphone
- 0:58Speaker 1: just wasn't working. He is so upset. He's going to
- 1:01Speaker 1: take it all home with him. He's going to be
- 1:03Speaker 1: angry for 24 hours, and hopefully we'll get him reconnected
- 1:06Speaker 1: and we'll do the show tomorrow. But man, is Sal upset. Yes,
- 1:09Speaker 1: he is so mad. Dan, an emotional night for you
- 1:13Speaker 1: last night. You're Seahawks, you know, raising a banner. Big
- 1:16Speaker 1: win over the Patriots.
- 1:17Speaker 4: I'll tell you how last night ended up feeling because
- 1:19Speaker 4: I felt that New England had a lot of momentum.
- 1:22Speaker 4: It was nice to see Taylor's boy, Mac Hollins, for
- 1:24Speaker 4: Taylor's benefit, still get the run that he deserves when
- 1:28Speaker 4: everybody's being out. But it felt like a game of
- 1:30Speaker 4: cutthroat kitchen. Did you ever watch that show on Food
- 1:33Speaker 4: Network where they have to throw different obstacles? Maybe they'll
- 1:36Speaker 4: take away like your blender, but it was like, guess what?
- 1:38Speaker 5: Seahawks.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Now you're not going to play with Sam Darnold Patriots.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Now you're not going to have AJ Brown. You already
- 1:43Speaker 4: don't have Travion Henderson. It felt like a bit of
- 1:46Speaker 4: a watered down game when all of the pieces ended
- 1:49Speaker 4: up settling at the end, exciting and crazy, but it
- 1:52Speaker 4: was just weird on how inefficient it ended up being
- 1:55Speaker 4: offensively because of all of the offensive players that were out.
- 1:59Speaker 6: Yep.
- 1:59Speaker 5: AJ Brown, high ankle sprain. He'll be out.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It looks like maybe a couple of weeks here. Those
- 2:03Speaker 1: are tricky. Did you laugh? Because I did.
- 2:06Speaker 5: A.J.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Brown, wide open, first half. But Drake May didn't have
- 2:10Speaker 1: a big enough arm to get him the ball. He
- 2:12Speaker 1: left Jalen Hurts to go to a quarterback who can
- 2:15Speaker 1: get him that ball, and Drake May underthrew him. They
- 2:18Speaker 1: got a pass interference penalty, but I was laughing because
- 2:21Speaker 1: Drake May felt so badly that he could not connect
- 2:24Speaker 1: with a wide open A.J. Brown who came to the
- 2:26Speaker 1: Patriots so a quarterback could connect with him on a
- 2:29Speaker 1: deep ball.
- 2:29Speaker 5: How about that? And it was their best play of
- 2:31Speaker 5: the game, arguably. Like, it truly was.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 5: And then they score a touchdown, and no one's heard
- 2:37Speaker 5: of the guy.
- 2:37Speaker 4: So everybody who's been waiting seven, eight months for fantasy
- 2:40Speaker 4: football are waiting for A.J.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Brown.
- 2:43Speaker 4: They're like, hey, I'm playing Ramondre Stevenson. There's no Travion Henderson.
- 2:46Speaker 4: And they throw it to someone that no one has
- 2:48Speaker 4: heard of.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Yes, I was feeling really good when Darnold went out.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I was feeling great about my Seahawks not making the playoffs.
- 2:56Speaker 5: You even retweeted the tweet. Yes.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Do you think 10 years from now, if a Seattle
- 3:01Speaker 1: starting quarterback goes down, that Drew Locke is still going
- 3:03Speaker 1: to be coming in?
- 3:04Speaker 5: I mean....
- 3:08Speaker 4: The Drew Locke slander was so much that NFL insiders
- 3:12Speaker 4: were saying... Jalen Milrow can't play unless Drew Locke gets hurt. Like,
- 3:17Speaker 4: I don't know who people like we're thinking, but people
- 3:19Speaker 4: were obviously thinking in their mind, boy, Drew Locke, is
- 3:22Speaker 4: it going to work out? Who could the Seahawks turn
- 3:24Speaker 4: to instead? That was the Drew Locke slander before he
- 3:27Speaker 4: pulled off another Houdini act. He did this a couple
- 3:29Speaker 4: of years ago, filling in for Gino Smith against the
- 3:32Speaker 4: Eagles on Monday Night Football. I don't know why people
- 3:34Speaker 4: are questioning the greatness that is Drew Locke.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I don't think they questioned him in spurts in a
- 3:39Speaker 1: moment like that, like last night. They questioned him if
- 3:41Speaker 1: he has to start 16 more games, you know?
- 3:44Speaker 5: Fair enough.
- 3:44Speaker 4: I thought Mike Tomlin made a really good point in
- 3:46Speaker 4: the postgame. He said, Drew Locke got most of the
- 3:49Speaker 4: reps in the preseason games. So if this was an opportunity,
- 3:52Speaker 4: he said this would have been maybe different in week
- 3:54Speaker 4: 10 or 11 where he'd been removed from game action
- 3:57Speaker 4: and wasn't getting a lot of reps in practice. But
- 3:59Speaker 4: his point was that Locke was probably in step because
- 4:02Speaker 4: of all of the preseason action there. He played a
- 4:05Speaker 4: majority of the two games, didn't end up playing the
- 4:07Speaker 4: last game for them. But yeah, he had a lot
- 4:09Speaker 4: of work in the preseason.
- 4:10Speaker 3: So I know Drew Locke wasn't part of the Seahawks
- 4:13Speaker 3: original game plan. But if you looked at the Patriots
- 4:16Speaker 3: game plan before the game and you told somebody from
- 4:19Speaker 3: the Patriots. that Mack Hollins would have more receiving yards
- 4:22Speaker 3: than A.J. Brown, Pop Douglas, and Romeo Dobbs combined, they
- 4:27Speaker 3: wouldn't like their chance to win that game, right?
- 4:30Speaker 5: No, you would say, yeah, we're losing.
- 4:34Speaker 3: And yet, it came down to a Drake May interception
- 4:38Speaker 3: where the Patriots could have driven for the score to
- 4:41Speaker 3: win the game, or at the very least, kick a
- 4:44Speaker 3: very manageable field goal to have a chance to win
- 4:46Speaker 3: in overtime.
- 4:47Speaker 4: That's what I thought was so interesting because Mike Vrabel
- 4:50Speaker 4: said afterwards, he's like, we want to be aggressive, I think,
- 4:53Speaker 4: and not reckless or whatever the phrase was. But if
- 4:56Speaker 4: you're New England on that time, do you want to
- 4:59Speaker 4: play for overtime? And I think most of us are like, yeah,
- 5:02Speaker 4: because they have drew lock on the other side. And again,
- 5:04Speaker 4: it's no disrespect for him, but you would think normally
- 5:06Speaker 4: on the road, let's go for the win.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Let's close this out.
- 5:09Speaker 4: You know, if there would be a chance you needed
- 5:10Speaker 4: to go for two, we're going to go for two,
- 5:12Speaker 4: the whole deal, but they were in field goal range.
- 5:14Speaker 4: And I felt at that point that that's what made
- 5:16Speaker 4: the interception. The third interception so bad was that new
- 5:19Speaker 4: England could play for overtime and still be in a
- 5:21Speaker 4: pretty good spot to win the game, but it was
- 5:23Speaker 4: thrown away by the, by the underthrow.
- 5:25Speaker 5: Listen, I understand going for the victory.
- 5:27Speaker 1: They had time. They had time out. So I understand
- 5:31Speaker 1: going for the victory. Your safety net there is three points.
- 5:35Speaker 1: It's the field goal. So what you can't do is
- 5:37Speaker 1: exactly what Drake May did, which is force a pass
- 5:40Speaker 1: he never should have made. Patrick McEnroe and Brock, you
- 5:44Speaker 1: are going to join us in hour number two. It
- 5:46Speaker 1: is a Think About It Thursday here. Give me the
- 5:48Speaker 1: imaging and let's do it.
- 5:52Speaker 2: You know that segment, Talk About It Tuesday on Hockman, Crowder,
- 5:55Speaker 2: and Solero? This is like that, but bigger and better.
- 6:01Speaker 2: And 48 hours later, this is Think About It Thursday.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Think About It Thursday.
- 6:07Speaker 1: This is Taylor's attempt to counter-program a local radio show
- 6:11Speaker 1: down here in Miami.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Hockman, Solero, and Crowder. What do you have for us today, Taylor?
- 6:17Speaker 3: So tonight's game, Niners versus Rams in Australia. Two different
- 6:21Speaker 3: styles of preparing. San Francisco arrived more than a week
- 6:24Speaker 3: early to acclimate. The Rams trained in California and arrived
- 6:28Speaker 3: in Melbourne only about a day before kickoff, trying to
- 6:32Speaker 3: keep their players closer to Pacific time. Which Australia strategy
- 6:36Speaker 3: would you guys rather have? Arrive a week early like
- 6:39Speaker 3: San Francisco or basically get off the plane and play
- 6:43Speaker 3: like Los Angeles?
- 6:44Speaker 5: Wow, that's a good question. 877-99 on Fox. 877-99 on Fox.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So I've been to Australia, and I can tell you,
- 6:55Speaker 1: having been there for two weeks, after a week, I
- 6:57Speaker 1: still wasn't properly adjusted. There is no adjusting to that.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Raheem Morris missed his birthday on the flight to Australia.
- 7:06Speaker 1: It's a long trip. I would rather just get off
- 7:09Speaker 1: the bird, play football, get back on the bird and
- 7:12Speaker 1: go home.
- 7:13Speaker 5: That's just me. I think that's the right strategy. Dan,
- 7:16Speaker 5: what do you think? Give me a week.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I'd love to see the sights and sounds. Get the
- 7:20Speaker 4: body clock adjusted. I'm on the 49ers plan, opposite of you,
- 7:24Speaker 4: Stu Gatz. I've never been to Australia. It's a long
- 7:26Speaker 4: flight I've seen.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Yeah, you're telling you, as someone who's been to Australia,
- 7:31Speaker 1: what I'm telling you is a week is not enough.
- 7:33Speaker 1: You're not adjusted after a week. You might think you're adjusted,
- 7:36Speaker 1: but you're not adjusted. I think too many bad things
- 7:38Speaker 1: can happen when you go a week in advance, you know?
- 7:41Speaker 5: And you're not there to see the sights, Dan. They're
- 7:44Speaker 5: going to win a football game. I mean, what do
- 7:47Speaker 5: you think? Vacation? Promote the game.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Isn't that what Kevin Demoff or whatever was fighting one
- 7:53Speaker 4: of the fans or one of the 49er reporters about
- 7:55Speaker 4: the Rams did not do their part to spread the game,
- 7:58Speaker 4: spread the love of the game while the 49ers have
- 8:00Speaker 4: been doing all of the goodwill in Australia this past week?
- 8:03Speaker 5: Yeah. Taylor, what do you think?
- 8:05Speaker 1: Because I didn't have to think about that for long.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I'm just like, yeah, let's hop off the bird, play football,
- 8:09Speaker 1: and go home, you know?
- 8:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that sounds good. But if tonight we
- 8:14Speaker 3: turn on this game and Matthew Stafford gets off to
- 8:18Speaker 3: a sluggish start and the Rams look pretty bad early on,
- 8:22Speaker 3: how quickly are we going to blame Sean McVay for
- 8:24Speaker 3: this travel strategy?
- 8:27Speaker 4: They sent people to Australia. Multiple times to test out.
- 8:32Speaker 4: That's the Rams excuse that they have. This is not
- 8:35Speaker 4: just something they came up with, that they have been
- 8:36Speaker 4: sending people over the last year back and forth to
- 8:40Speaker 4: see what their biometrics or whatever say.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Right.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And it came back is just hop off the bird
- 8:46Speaker 1: and play football.
- 8:47Speaker 4: The result said Stugatz theory. That's what it said. Stugatz
- 8:51Speaker 4: theory is the best theory.
- 8:54Speaker 3: So, Dan, I saw that report that they sent staffers.
- 8:57Speaker 3: No offense to the Rams, because I'm sure the Rams
- 8:59Speaker 3: know more about how to do this than me. Well,
- 9:02Speaker 3: what is sending your analytics guy supposed to do to
- 9:05Speaker 3: help prepare, play a football game?
- 9:07Speaker 5: It's all about body adjustment. That's it. Like, how long
- 9:10Speaker 5: did it take you to adjust to the time in Australia, right?
- 9:13Speaker 5: It doesn't matter who you are. Todd feels fine.
- 9:15Speaker 4: Todd's great.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:16Speaker 5: Look at Todd right now. He looks great.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Look at Todd punching numbers into his calculator in our
- 9:22Speaker 3: apartment whatsoever. Our accounting department is a lot different than
- 9:27Speaker 3: how miles Garrett's body adjusts coming off the edge against
- 9:31Speaker 3: Trent Williams.
- 9:31Speaker 4: But what about if Neil was okay as well, you know,
- 9:34Speaker 4: or Donna, like any of those, like if they're all
- 9:36Speaker 4: still at the top of their level, I think the
- 9:39Speaker 4: numbers will show that the Rams are making the right decision.
- 9:43Speaker 1: It seems excessive to send staffers out there just to
- 9:45Speaker 1: see how their body is reacting to being in Australia.
- 9:48Speaker 5: Staffers who aren't playing football. Would you volunteer? That's the question.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Like they tell you, you got to go on a
- 9:56Speaker 4: flight and you got to immediately come back after a day.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Is that a perk or not?
- 10:03Speaker 7: Wow.
- 10:04Speaker 5: How am I flying?
- 10:05Speaker 4: I mean, that's... I would think you would have to
- 10:07Speaker 4: fly first class because the Rams are flying first class.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Right. Right.
- 10:13Speaker 8: Yes.
- 10:13Speaker 5: You want to recreate it. Exactly. Yes.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:17Speaker 5: A charter jet for time.
- 10:20Speaker 3: What a ridiculous premise.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Melissa.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Melissa got on this 16 hour flight and was able
- 10:25Speaker 3: to do her social media job. That's the same thing
- 10:28Speaker 3: as Matthew Stafford having to play a football game.
- 10:29Speaker 5: Give me a break.
- 10:30Speaker 4: The Rams said that they slept. And again, it's like
- 10:32Speaker 4: 16 or 17 hours. But there's still like five or
- 10:35Speaker 4: six hours after you sleep. That you would probably wake up.
- 10:39Speaker 4: I think I probably would volunteer at least once to see,
- 10:43Speaker 4: but I don't know if you have to make like
- 10:44Speaker 4: a three trip commitment because I think that's really how
- 10:47Speaker 4: you would also get the data as well.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Yes.
- 10:49Speaker 1: And Taylor, to answer your question, if the Rams lose
- 10:52Speaker 1: the game, yes, of course, we'll blame McVay for taking
- 10:54Speaker 1: them too late. And if the 49ers lose the game.
- 10:58Speaker 1: We will blame Shanahan for taking them too early.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Also, I know this was going to be too quick
- 11:04Speaker 3: of a turnaround for Aaron Donald to play in this game.
- 11:07Speaker 3: You can't make the trip with the team. They're paying
- 11:10Speaker 3: you all this money. You can't go out there and
- 11:12Speaker 3: get your pom-poms and support your teammates.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I would say if you're Aaron Donald, you can have
- 11:16Speaker 1: it any way you want to have it. And if
- 11:17Speaker 1: he said, hey, I'll sign this contract, I ain't going
- 11:20Speaker 1: to Australia. The Rams are OK with that, you know,
- 11:23Speaker 1: and why shouldn't they be? Aaron Donald is back playing football.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And if they only get it for 16 games, who cares?
- 11:29Speaker 3: He's like Roger Clemens when he came back and Roger
- 11:31Speaker 3: Clemens was like, I'm not going on any road trips.
- 11:33Speaker 3: And the Yankees were like, well, we need this guy
- 11:35Speaker 3: to pitch. So I guess he's not going on any
- 11:37Speaker 3: road trips that he doesn't have to pitch in.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh. Aaron Donald is in Georgia's box. That's
- 11:42Speaker 4: my Susan Waldman. That was a good one.
- 11:46Speaker 5: I've never done it before.
- 11:47Speaker 3: And it wasn't that good.
- 11:47Speaker 5: I know it was awful, but that's okay. Great job.
- 11:50Speaker 5: I'll take it. Thank you. Great job. I appreciate that.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I'd like to recreate that if we could. Can we
- 11:55Speaker 1: get Susan Walman actually saying that, Derek Cheater?
- 11:58Speaker 4: Sam Stamisi playing Drops of Me right now. That's a
- 12:02Speaker 4: great job.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I wanted to do a side-by-side comparison of the real
- 12:07Speaker 1: one and the fake one.
- 12:08Speaker 5: Because the fake one was dreadful. It was a good attempt, though.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Let's take a call here. 877-99... Oh, the caller dropped.
- 12:18Speaker 1: 877-99 on Fox. That is 877-99 on Fox. How do
- 12:23Speaker 1: you feel about a game on a neutral field? I
- 12:25Speaker 1: can't stand these games. I really can't.
- 12:27Speaker 5: I have, like.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Rams 49ers is a game I should be excited for,
- 12:32Speaker 1: and yet it's hard to get excited for it, A,
- 12:34Speaker 1: after last night's game, and B, when it's being played
- 12:37Speaker 1: across the country in Australia. I mean, what kind of
- 12:42Speaker 1: ridiculousness is this? There's going to be no atmosphere. There's
- 12:45Speaker 1: going to be nothing there. It's going to be a
- 12:47Speaker 1: bunch of people just happy to be in an NFL game.
- 12:49Speaker 5: I don't like it.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I mean, can we start playing enough with college football
- 12:54Speaker 1: starting the season in Dublin, Ireland, and enough with the
- 12:57Speaker 1: NFL starting the season, although it started last night in Seattle,
- 13:00Speaker 1: but enough with them having one of their first two
- 13:02Speaker 1: games in Melbourne, Australia.
- 13:05Speaker 5: Nobody cares.
- 13:06Speaker 1: And nobody, and I mean nobody, not a single player,
- 13:10Speaker 1: not a single staffer, not a single coach on either
- 13:13Speaker 1: of those teams wants to be in Australia right now.
- 13:16Speaker 5: They don't.
- 13:17Speaker 3: So just a quick correction. You said across the country
- 13:20Speaker 3: in Australia. It would be across the globe.
- 13:22Speaker 5: That's what I meant. Yeah.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Other side of the world. You know, listen, we lost
- 13:28Speaker 1: the caller. We lost Sal. I'm very upset. Mikey is
- 13:32Speaker 1: not here. I have no idea what's going on. And
- 13:35Speaker 1: Dan Beyer has been forced into a co-hosting role that,
- 13:37Speaker 1: quite frankly, he wasn't expecting when he stepped in today.
- 13:40Speaker 5: I love it. I even love my Waldman. Let's hear the–
- 13:45Speaker 5: Do we have Susan Waldman? Yes, you're going to have
- 13:48Speaker 5: to do it again, though, okay? So you're going to
- 13:49Speaker 5: have to– All right, you got it. All right, so
- 13:51Speaker 5: let's hear the real one first.
- 13:53Speaker 1: This is the real– this is what Dan was just
- 13:56Speaker 1: attempting to do.
- 13:58Speaker 5: This is the real Susan Waldman making a call here.
- 14:02Speaker 5: Roger Clemens is in Georgia's box, and Roger Clemens is
- 14:07Speaker 5: coming back. Oh, my goodness gracious. All right, Dan. Aaron
- 14:14Speaker 5: Donald is in George's box. Goodness gracious. Thank you very much.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Why are you giving him applause? I look over before
- 14:25Speaker 5: Dan starts and he's like stretching his face out.
- 14:27Speaker 4: He's getting ready for the Northeast accent, you know?
- 14:31Speaker 5: Yes, you have to. Great job.
- 14:33Speaker 3: That Yankee season, Stu, I got tickets before the season
- 14:36Speaker 3: started to two games. One of them was to that
- 14:39Speaker 3: game against the Mariners where Roger Clemens announced his comeback
- 14:43Speaker 3: from George Steinbrenner's box. And the second game that I
- 14:46Speaker 3: randomly had tickets to was against the Pirates where Roger
- 14:49Speaker 3: Clemens made his debut back at Yankee Stadium. And when
- 14:52Speaker 3: I went to Tahoe, I told Roger Clemens that story.
- 14:55Speaker 3: He could still what I tell you, he couldn't care less.
- 14:58Speaker 5: Right.
- 15:00Speaker 3: I told him that story and he looked right through
- 15:02Speaker 3: me because his wife had just asked me to take
- 15:04Speaker 3: a picture of him and of him and his wife
- 15:06Speaker 3: together with Lake Tahoe in the background. I was like, hey, Roger,
- 15:09Speaker 3: big Yankee fan back in 2007. This is what happened.
- 15:12Speaker 3: And he just looked at me, goes, just take the picture.
- 15:14Speaker 1: I've taken that picture. I know exactly the hotel you're
- 15:16Speaker 1: speaking of. I've been in that restaurant. They eat breakfast
- 15:19Speaker 1: there every single morning. I have taken that picture of
- 15:21Speaker 1: Roger and his wife. with the lake in the background.
- 15:24Speaker 5: I have.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I've taken that same exact picture, and he wasn't listening
- 15:27Speaker 1: to me either. I was trying to small talk him.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Did it ever dawn on you when you're talking to
- 15:31Speaker 1: Roger Clemens to ask him to come on the show,
- 15:34Speaker 1: or did you just.
- 15:34Speaker 5: Say, hey, Yanks, go Yanks, rock it? No.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Stu, when I tell you he looked right through me
- 15:40Speaker 3: when I said that, the 12-year-old in me was very
- 15:44Speaker 3: excited about to tell Roger Clemens how big of a
- 15:46Speaker 3: Yankee fan I was. And he couldn't even give him–
- 15:49Speaker 3: if I asked Roger Clemens the time of day at
- 15:51Speaker 3: that moment, he would have spit on me.
- 15:53Speaker 1: It's an amazing quality he has where he could be
- 15:55Speaker 1: in Lake Tahoe for five days and nobody sees him.
- 16:00Speaker 4: It's also a heck of a lot easier to not
- 16:02Speaker 4: say anything than to say, just take the picture. Like
- 16:06Speaker 4: that is another level as well.
- 16:09Speaker 3: He might as well have snarled that.
- 16:11Speaker 5: He gave you high heat.
- 16:15Speaker 4: He was actively dismissing you. He could have passively done
- 16:18Speaker 4: it and just ignored it and fake that he didn't
- 16:21Speaker 4: hear it. But that is a next level jerk.
- 16:24Speaker 3: I think he misremembers. No, definitely not. After I handed
- 16:29Speaker 3: him the phone back.
- 16:30Speaker 5: Yes.
- 16:31Speaker 3: In my head, I said, I'm glad he's not in
- 16:33Speaker 3: the Hall of Fame.
- 16:36Speaker 6: Really?
- 16:36Speaker 5: You started insulting him. Just to yourself. Just to myself.
- 16:40Speaker 3: I said, I think the Hall of Fame made a
- 16:41Speaker 3: good decision.
- 16:41Speaker 5: Internally, yes.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Is Drew Locke on the Mount Rushmore backup quarterbacks? Put
- 16:48Speaker 1: it on the poll, Taylor.
- 16:49Speaker 5: I think he is. Mr. Reliable, right? Drew Locke. I
- 16:53Speaker 5: think he is on the Mount Rushmore of backup quarterbacks.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Backup quarterback has become such an important position in the
- 16:59Speaker 1: NFL because the quarterback position is the most important position
- 17:03Speaker 1: in sports.
- 17:04Speaker 5: They get hit a lot.
- 17:05Speaker 1: They go down occasionally and they get hurt occasionally. And
- 17:09Speaker 1: I'm telling if you remember, Dan, Patrick Mahomes went down
- 17:11Speaker 1: for a drive or two. And I think it was
- 17:13Speaker 1: Damon Eward and Brock Eward's going to come on an
- 17:15Speaker 1: hour number two. But I think it was Damon Eward
- 17:18Speaker 1: who led them on a 98-yard drive.
- 17:20Speaker 5: It was not. It was somebody else.
- 17:22Speaker 3: It was Chad Henney.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Chad Henney is on the Mount Rushmore backup quarterbacks. That's
- 17:26Speaker 1: who I was thinking of, yes.
- 17:27Speaker 3: So Mount Rushmore has four spots.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Yes.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Nick Foles has to be on there.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Well, Nick Foles won a Super Bowl. Jeff Hostetler probably
- 17:34Speaker 1: has to be on there.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Hostetler's the second spot. And if you have Chad Henney,
- 17:38Speaker 3: now you're looking for a fourth spot.
- 17:40Speaker 5: I think it's Drew Locke.
- 17:43Speaker 4: I feel like Gardner Minshew is our generation's backup. Like
- 17:46Speaker 4: right now, like the key is the backup quarterback. Like
- 17:50Speaker 4: Jacoby Brissett is good enough to now start for Arizona
- 17:53Speaker 4: where Minshew's, you know, backing up. I feel like Minshew
- 17:56Speaker 4: is our guy right now. But if Locke could have
- 17:58Speaker 4: this just for a couple more weeks, he could be
- 18:01Speaker 4: the guy. I mean, there is Minshew mania and all.
- 18:03Speaker 6: Yes.
- 18:04Speaker 7: Yes.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Drew Locke has to be careful because, you know, you
- 18:07Speaker 1: get exposed when you start multiple games in the NFL.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Just take your quick stints, get in, get out. It's
- 18:13Speaker 1: kind of like the L.A.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Rams.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Hop off the bird, play football, hop back on the
- 18:17Speaker 1: bird and go home. Drew Locke doesn't want to start
- 18:19Speaker 1: 16 games.
- 18:20Speaker 5: No, you don't want to hire him full time. Just
- 18:22Speaker 5: give him a part time job on the weekends. That's right.
- 18:25Speaker 5: What is Ricardo muttering back there? I keep hearing Ricardo
- 18:28Speaker 5: in the background.
- 18:29Speaker 1: He is upset that we have left someone off the
- 18:31Speaker 1: Mount Rushmore backup quarterbacks.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Yeah, he keeps saying Earl Morrell.
- 18:35Speaker 5: Oh, he's right.
- 18:36Speaker 7: Morrell.
- 18:36Speaker 5: Morrell.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Sorry. Sorry, I don't know the 1972 Miami Dolphins.
- 18:41Speaker 1: The only undefeated team in the history of the NFL.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Bob Greasy went down. Earl Morrell came in. Preach. And
- 18:49Speaker 1: took him all the way to the Super Bowl. I
- 18:50Speaker 1: think Greasy came back for that Super Bowl.
- 18:52Speaker 7: Yep.
- 18:52Speaker 1: But I don't think Earl Morrill should be on the
- 18:54Speaker 1: Mount Rushmore backup quarterbacks.
- 18:57Speaker 5: I'm not even certain Hostetler should.
- 18:59Speaker 1: I'm just thinking of guys who come in, they go out,
- 19:03Speaker 1: they do their job, they keep you afloat, they get
- 19:06Speaker 1: you a W.
- 19:07Speaker 5: Davis Mills is the perfect example. That is the guy.
- 19:11Speaker 5: He's a great backup.
- 19:13Speaker 3: I think part of it, too, is you have to
- 19:15Speaker 3: have a good backup quarterback name, like Bubby Brister. Yeah.
- 19:20Speaker 3: That's a great backup quarterback name.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Chris Sims has told us that backup quarterback is the
- 19:25Speaker 1: best position, best job in sports. You get paid seven figures,
- 19:29Speaker 1: you hold a clipboard and nobody hits you. I mean, it's,
- 19:35Speaker 1: it's hard to argue.

- 20:05Speaker 1: 877-99 on Fox. We have a ton of calls here. Again,
- 20:08Speaker 1: Patrick McEnroe. I finally get to talk some tennis. He's
- 20:11Speaker 1: going to join us in hour number two. Brock Eward
- 20:13Speaker 1: is going to join us in hour number two as well.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Does a local show. The biggest show in Seattle. Looking
- 20:18Speaker 1: forward to speaking to him about what transpired last night
- 20:21Speaker 1: and the status of Sam Darnold.
- 20:23Speaker 5: Let's go out to John, who's in Iowa today. John,
- 20:26Speaker 5: go ahead. You're on Fox Sports Radio.
- 20:29Speaker 3: How are you guys doing this afternoon?
- 20:31Speaker 7: Good.
- 20:31Speaker 5: How are you, John? Good.
- 20:32Speaker 7: Good. say, you know, the whole, the, the, the Mount
- 20:36Speaker 7: Rushmore backup quarterbacks, you know, this guy didn't, didn't win
- 20:41Speaker 7: a championship, but I'm wondering if Frank Reich is worth
- 20:45Speaker 7: throwing into that conversation that he authored one of the biggest, well,
- 20:50Speaker 7: at the time it was the biggest comeback in NFL history.
- 20:54Speaker 7: And actually I think it was only recently eclipsed by
- 20:59Speaker 7: my Minnesota Vikings, maybe two or three seasons ago when
- 21:02Speaker 7: they came back massively against, I think it was the
- 21:05Speaker 7: Indianapolis Colts. But that game that Frank Wright.
- 21:08Speaker 5: Came in, masterful.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Yes, automatically puts them on the Mount Rushmore of backup
- 21:14Speaker 1: quarterbacks just for that game and that game alone. I
- 21:16Speaker 1: believe it was a wild card game. They were down
- 21:18Speaker 1: big to the Oilers going into the second half. He
- 21:20Speaker 1: came in, he brought them back. That team went back
- 21:22Speaker 1: to the Super Bowl and, of course, lost. But Frank
- 21:26Speaker 1: Wright is deserving, Dan, no doubt.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 21:30Speaker 4: And I also think that his quarterbacking career has followed
- 21:33Speaker 4: his coaching career better as an offensive coordinator than as
- 21:37Speaker 4: a head coach.
- 21:38Speaker 5: You know what?
- 21:38Speaker 4: Frank Reich is your normal starter. He's good as the backup.
- 21:41Speaker 4: Maybe you don't want him as the head coach, but sure.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Have him run an offense and he'll put that to
- 21:46Speaker 4: test this year with the Jets. So if the Jets
- 21:48Speaker 4: have any success, the theory ends up handing out.
- 21:52Speaker 5: All right.
- 21:52Speaker 4: It is locked in concrete in ink.
- 21:54Speaker 7: Done.
- 21:55Speaker 6: Yes.
- 21:56Speaker 3: A movable object versus the unstoppable force.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Something has to give. Ricardo, we'll get back to the
- 22:04Speaker 1: calls in a second. He has not stopped during the
- 22:07Speaker 1: break with Earl Morrill. And perhaps we should reconsider this.
- 22:11Speaker 1: He did help the Dolphins to an undefeated season in
- 22:13Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. What else do you have for us, Ricardo,
- 22:17Speaker 1: as his biggest fan?
- 22:18Speaker 9: Well, just looking him up on FootballReference.com, in 1968, he
- 22:22Speaker 9: went 13-1 as the backup quarterback at Baltimore for Johnny Unitas.
- 22:28Speaker 9: And then he actually played in the Super Bowl that
- 22:31Speaker 9: Namath beat you guys.
- 22:31Speaker 5: So he's lost one game essentially as a starter. No, no, no, no.
- 22:36Speaker 9: As a starter, he went 63 and 36 in his career.
- 22:40Speaker 9: And these are backup quarterback stats right here. 161 touchdowns
- 22:44Speaker 9: and 148 interceptions.
- 22:46Speaker 1: No, but what I'm saying is he came in for
- 22:47Speaker 1: Johnny Unitas. They lost a single game. He came in
- 22:50Speaker 1: for Bob Greasy. They didn't lose any games. That's right.
- 22:52Speaker 1: So if you don't start him, that's the key. And
- 22:56Speaker 1: our moral might have to be in consideration. Mount Rushmore
- 22:59Speaker 1: backup quarterbacks.
- 23:00Speaker 5: How about that?
- 23:00Speaker 4: And Kurt Warner is someone who was a backup quarterback,
- 23:03Speaker 4: but he was just disguised as one. He was a
- 23:04Speaker 4: Hall of Fame quarterback, but he just ended up. So
- 23:07Speaker 4: even though he started as a backup quarterback, some of
- 23:10Speaker 4: these guys do, but they're just not in that backup realm.
- 23:14Speaker 4: It's a special sort of group. You either have it
- 23:16Speaker 4: or you don't.
- 23:17Speaker 5: Yeah. Let's go to Kurt, who's in Nevada today. Kurt,
- 23:20Speaker 5: go ahead. You're on Fox Sports Radio.
- 23:22Speaker 6: Hey, one of the greats who's also a field goal
- 23:26Speaker 6: kicker and had a single-bar face mask, George Blanda.
- 23:34Speaker 5: Oh, yes, Blanda. Back when football was football, right?
- 23:38Speaker 6: Yep, exactly.
- 23:40Speaker 1: All right, thank you for the call. George Blanda. Listen,
- 23:45Speaker 1: you never know what's going to get the phones ringing.
- 23:47Speaker 1: And I had no idea that Mount Rushmore of backup quarterbacks.
- 23:51Speaker 1: And we should be playing the sound of Taylor saying
- 23:53Speaker 1: black up quarterback on Martin Luther King Day.
- 23:57Speaker 5: But somehow we haven't gotten to it yet. But this
- 23:59Speaker 5: is the thing. Backup quarterback.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Backup quarterback. Black backup quarterback. No disrespect to George Blanda.
- 24:08Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:08Speaker 3: What about backup quarterback?
- 24:09Speaker 5: When you say that, you're about to disrespect someone, just
- 24:12Speaker 5: so you know.
- 24:13Speaker 3: I don't respect anybody whose helmet looks like something they
- 24:16Speaker 3: bought from Toys R Us. It looks like such a
- 24:20Speaker 3: cheap helmet. That's what they were wearing back in the day?
- 24:22Speaker 5: Yes.
- 24:23Speaker 3: A one-step evolution from the leather helmet, what George Blanda
- 24:26Speaker 3: was wearing.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I wouldn't even say back in the day. Joe Theismann
- 24:29Speaker 1: wore that helmet in the 80s.
- 24:32Speaker 5: He did. Single bar.
- 24:33Speaker 3: I'm looking at a picture of George Blanda playing quarterback.
- 24:36Speaker 3: I'm assuming he's like 29 in this photo. He looks
- 24:40Speaker 3: like he's 45.
- 24:40Speaker 5: Oh, wow.
- 24:44Speaker 3: He played until he was 48.
- 24:45Speaker 5: He did. It was a different time.
- 24:48Speaker 3: That's a testament to how bad football was back then.
- 24:51Speaker 1: How old was Brady? Brady, technically a backup Brady, by
- 24:56Speaker 1: the way, to Drew Bledsoe.
- 24:57Speaker 5: Fair enough. Yes, the only quarterback on both Mount Rushmore's.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Gatz and
- 25:05Speaker 2: Company live weekdays at 3 p.m. Eastern, 12 p.m. Pacific
- 25:10Speaker 2: on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Brock, you are going to join us in about 10
- 25:18Speaker 1: minutes or so. Patrick McEnroe, I finally get to talk
- 25:21Speaker 1: some tennis.
- 25:22Speaker 7: U.S.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Open has been great. Taylor and Mikey A. will not
- 25:26Speaker 1: indulge me. So therefore, I had to go to my
- 25:29Speaker 1: friend Patrick McEnroe to talk some U.S.
- 25:32Speaker 5: Open tennis.
- 25:33Speaker 1: We do have a call here, 877-99 on Fox. Again,
- 25:36Speaker 1: Brock Eward, Patrick McEnroe coming up later this hour. Taylor
- 25:40Speaker 1: just said to me in my headphones right before we
- 25:43Speaker 1: got started, if Cooper Rush starts for the Falcons... I
- 25:47Speaker 1: am not turning that game on.
- 25:50Speaker 3: If my two options were watch tennis or watch Falcons
- 25:53Speaker 3: with Cooper Rush against the Steelers.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Yes.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Then I'm with you, Stu. I'm choosing tennis every time.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:59Speaker 1: The only reason you're tuning into the Falcons because they
- 26:02Speaker 1: have a talented team and good players at the skill position.
- 26:06Speaker 1: And Bijan Robinson was on with us earlier this week.
- 26:08Speaker 1: But you want to see if Tua could turn it around.
- 26:09Speaker 5: Right?
- 26:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I have no interest in watching Cooper Rush try
- 26:13Speaker 3: to keep them afloat.
- 26:14Speaker 4: A rush to change the channel. That's what it would be.
- 26:18Speaker 5: No, he's flatly saying it's never landing on his television.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Won't even get quad box consideration.
- 26:25Speaker 5: Let's go out to Michael, who's in Virginia today. Michael,
- 26:28Speaker 5: go ahead. You're on Fox Sports Radio.
- 26:30Speaker 8: Hey, Steve Dodge. First time caller. Just want to appreciate
- 26:33Speaker 8: you're doing a very good job. I love the show.
- 26:35Speaker 5: Thank you, buddy. Appreciate it.
- 26:37Speaker 8: So, this backup... One of the reasons why he's in
- 26:41Speaker 8: the Hall of Fame, not the reason why, there's many
- 26:44Speaker 8: reasons why he was above it, but one of the
- 26:46Speaker 8: reasons why he's in the Hall of Fame was because,
- 26:48Speaker 8: and this guy is Steve Young, he was backing up
- 26:50Speaker 8: Joe Montana for like one or two seasons before he
- 26:52Speaker 8: became the starter. And he got a ring.
- 26:55Speaker 5: Yes, yes.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Right, but I don't recall Young ever coming in as
- 26:59Speaker 1: a true backup. I feel like Young was just waiting
- 27:02Speaker 1: his turn until Montana left.
- 27:03Speaker 5: Is that fair?
- 27:05Speaker 8: Yeah, but it was like one or two, maybe three seasons.
- 27:08Speaker 8: He was just there as backup. And he also, he
- 27:10Speaker 8: was the highest paid backup at the time when he
- 27:13Speaker 8: was backing up the, you know, the all-time great Joe Montana.
- 27:17Speaker 3: If we count Steve Young, it feels like we would
- 27:19Speaker 3: almost have to count Aaron Rodgers backing up Brett Favre
- 27:22Speaker 3: for a couple of years.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Or Brady backing up Bledsoe for that first season, right?
- 27:27Speaker 1: It's got to be a true backup, a guy who's
- 27:29Speaker 1: just not good enough to start, but when he comes in,
- 27:31Speaker 1: he gets the job done.
- 27:32Speaker 3: A backup quarterback's name has to make you laugh a little,
- 27:35Speaker 3: like Charlie Batch.
- 27:36Speaker 5: Perfect. Yes, yes, Charlie Batch. Jason Garrett.
- 27:43Speaker 4: I mean, who's benefited more from being a backup quarterback
- 27:46Speaker 4: with the Cowboys than Jason Garrett?
- 27:49Speaker 5: Nobody has.
- 27:49Speaker 1: He parlayed it into head coaching jobs and a position
- 27:52Speaker 1: at NBC Sports.
- 27:53Speaker 5: Yes.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Taylor feels like Jason Garrett is. Do you agree with this, Dan?
- 27:58Speaker 1: Why don't you give him your Jason Garrett take here?
- 27:59Speaker 1: It's laugh out loud funny.
- 28:01Speaker 3: Jason Garrett.
- 28:02Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 28:02Speaker 3: Jason Garrett reminds me of an alien who's dressed in
- 28:06Speaker 3: a human suit.
- 28:08Speaker 5: And when he gets back to the hotel, he unzips
- 28:11Speaker 5: his skin. What a long day.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Really fooled the humans today.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Dan is a professional broadcaster and you are one, the
- 28:22Speaker 1: only one on this show. How'd you feel about Tomlin's
- 28:24Speaker 1: performance at.
- 28:25Speaker 5: NBC last night? Solid. I think he's good. Really? Yep. Okay.
- 28:30Speaker 1: I have him coaching the Jets by week five. Brock,
- 28:35Speaker 1: you are going to join us coming up next.
