Latest / Vigilante Vibes Podcast / Ep. 201. Who is Namor the Submariner?
Transcript
- 0:10Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks and all the nerds in between.
- 0:13My name is Megan from Vigilante Vibes where I talk everything
- 0:16Marvel from the NCU Marvel Studios to Marvel Comics and say
- 0:20I want to talk about another character that falls into the
- 0:24mutant category but I want to talk about it is the mutant.
- 0:28The Mutant The first mutant published Neymour Neymour was
- 0:33created by Bill Everett in April of 1939 for Motion Pictures
- 0:38Funnies weekly #1A promotional pamphlet that was given out for
- 0:42free at movie theaters. Six months later, Everett
- 0:45expanded the eight page black and white story into a 12 page
- 0:49color story for Martin Goodman's Marvel Comics #1 talking about
- 0:54his creative process, Bill Everett explained.
- 0:57I suppose I have always liked water.
- 1:00If anything started it, I suppose it was when I got
- 1:04interested in Admiral Byrd's expedition to the South Pole.
- 1:08I read a lot about that. The more I read, the more
- 1:11intrigued up became. So when the opportunity to
- 1:14create a character, I naturally thought of water.
- 1:17Jack London's adventures at sea were influential too.
- 1:20I used to read a lot of sea stories.
- 1:22That character was Neymour. He's talking about Neymour back
- 1:26when he was mainly known as the Submariner.
- 1:29Made his debut during the Golden Age of comics and is often
- 1:33considered the very first true anti hero of comic books.
- 1:36Fun fact, he was also the first superhero who could fly, so his
- 1:41encounter and explosive first fight with the original Human
- 1:45Torch, which was the Android Jim Hammond and Marvel Mystery
- 1:49comics #8 in June of 1940 ended up making comic book history.
- 1:54This issue marked the first time superheroes met, fought, and
- 1:57teamed up in the same story, and it helped introduce the idea of
- 2:00a shared universe where multiple heroes all exist in the same
- 2:04world. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby brought
- 2:07Neymour into the Silver Age with Fantastic Four Number Four in
- 2:11May of 1962, folding him back into Marvel by tying his Golden
- 2:16Age history into modern continuity.
- 2:19They also explained that some of Neymour's Wilder Golden Age
- 2:22adventures were basically exaggerated stories told through
- 2:26comic books. Lee gave Neymour a more formal
- 2:31dramatic edge, complete with the pseudo Shakespearean speech
- 2:35style he'd later used for Thor. He also coined Neymour's famous
- 2:39battle cry, Imperious Rex, and firmly established his
- 2:44underwater Kingdom as the legendary city of Atlantis.
- 2:48That's all well and good, but who is Neymour?
- 2:51We've all heard of him. We've all heard of his toxicity,
- 2:54but outside of his obsession with Sue Storm, who is he?
- 3:00Neymour the Submariner is the half human, half Atlantean
- 3:04Prince of the underwater Kingdom of Atlantis, and people on the
- 3:07surface can't quite decide whether to love or fear him.
- 3:10Honestly, it kind of depends on the day, which I feel is the
- 3:13same for comic readers. If you threaten Atlantis,
- 3:16Neymour will absolutely respond with overwhelming force, but if
- 3:20you earn his respect, he can be a fierce protector of the
- 3:24oppressed. Either way, he's proud,
- 3:26stubborn, and never short of confidence.
- 3:28He is a cocky M effer. As Atlantean royalty.
- 3:33Neymour takes his job super, super seriously.
- 3:35Maybe too seriously. He's LED invasions, started
- 3:39wars, made alliances whenever it suited his vision of how the
- 3:42world should work. He's been a part of just about
- 3:45every major superhero team at some point.
- 3:48That includes Avengers, Defenders, X-Men, even the
- 3:52Illuminati. When teamwork fails him, he's
- 3:55not above forming morally questionable groups like the
- 3:59Cabal to get results. At the end of the day, Neymour
- 4:03answers to no one but himself. Neymour's origin starts with his
- 4:08human father, explorer Leonard McKenzie, whose underwater
- 4:12explosives accidentally damaged Atlantis.
- 4:16They brought him face to face with Atlantean Princess Fen, and
- 4:20what started as suspicious turned into love.
- 4:23Their son, named Moore, whose name means avenging son, grew up
- 4:27to fully embrace that meaning. From a young age.
- 4:30He showed signs of a credible power, including super strength,
- 4:33longevity, telepathy and eventually flight thanks to the
- 4:38little tiny wings on his ankles. But we will get into all
- 4:41everything he can do a little later.
- 4:44Growing up wasn't exactly peaceful.
- 4:47A disastrous quest involving a powerful magical relic led to
- 4:50tragedy, corruption, and the birth of a lifelong rivalry with
- 4:55the Waterlord Atuma. As Neymour matured, he often
- 4:59lashed out at the surface world for polluting the oceans and
- 5:02harming his people, clashing repeatedly with humanity's
- 5:05heroes, especially the Human Torch.
- 5:09During World War 2, Nymor surprised everyone by teaming up
- 5:13with the surface heroes like Captain America and the Human
- 5:15Torch to stop the Axis powers forming the invaders.
- 5:21Even after fighting side by side, though, his relationship
- 5:24with humanity stayed very, very rocky, and it seems like that's
- 5:27exactly how he wanted it to stay.
- 5:30Neymour is incredibly powerful, especially underwater, and has
- 5:33gone toe to toe with some of the Earth's strongest beings without
- 5:37backing down. Over the years, Neymour's life
- 5:39has been defined by shifting alliances, personal losses, and
- 5:43hard choices. He's loved deeply, lost
- 5:47tragically from Lady Dorma to Marina.
- 5:51He's ruled Atlantis, lost it, rebuilt it, and lost it again.
- 5:56He's destroyed worlds to save others.
- 5:58He's held Infinity Stones, battled gods, invaded Wakanda,
- 6:03and been killed and resurrected more than once.
- 6:06So he has lived a life. Somewhat more recently, Namor
- 6:11has leaned hard into protecting the oceans at any cost, even if
- 6:15that puts him at odds with The Avengers again, which he does
- 6:18not care about. He's formed his own ocean
- 6:21focused teams, issued ultimatums to other sea based heroes,
- 6:25walked the line between King Conquer and antihero.
- 6:29Sometimes he pulls back from the brink, other times he goes all
- 6:33all the way in, balls to the wall.
- 6:36Through it all, one thing never changes.
- 6:38Neymour believes he knows what's best for his people, and he's
- 6:42willing to fight anyone to make it happen.
- 6:44Cross him and you'll make an enemy for life.
- 6:47Earn his respect and you might just gain one of the most
- 6:50dangerous allies on the planet. Neymour is complicated and most
- 6:55people don't really get him. He's incredibly arrogant and
- 6:58genuinely believes he's better than almost everyone else in the
- 7:01world. Pride is kind of his whole
- 7:04thing. He hates asking for help,
- 7:06especially from anyone he sees as weaker, which is basically
- 7:10everyone that's above land. He's blunt, he's
- 7:13confrontational. Even with allies, he's more
- 7:15likely to bark orders and make threats than politely ask.
- 7:19He's also impulsive and hot headed, and his temper often
- 7:22gets him in trouble. That said, Neymour isn't all ego
- 7:27and anger, just mostly beneath it all.
- 7:30He has a strong moral core. He'll always stand up for the
- 7:34oppressed and push back against the powerful, even if it means
- 7:37turning on his own allies. He's willing to make brutal, no
- 7:41win choices and even sacrifice himself if it means saving
- 7:45innocent lives. No hesitation, no excuses.
- 7:49Even though his pride keeps him from admitting mistakes out
- 7:52loud, Namor carries a lot of guilt.
- 7:54He feels the weight of his failures and the weight of the
- 7:57lives he's taken, even when he's believed that he would had good
- 8:00reasonings at the time. He doesn't show it often, but he
- 8:03does respect a very, very small circle of people that includes
- 8:07Captain America, Cyclops, Reed Richards, and surprisingly had a
- 8:13long on again off again friendship with Doctor Doom.
- 8:17As a ruler, Neymour governs with an iron fist, but he's fair and
- 8:21genuinely devoted to his people, and he's proven more than once
- 8:25that he'd die for them without a second thought.
- 8:28On a more personal note, Neymour is famously A womanizer.
- 8:32While he's known to have a soft spot for blinds, one blonde in
- 8:35particular, he's also pretty open minded and adventurous, and
- 8:39even forming romantic relationships with beings aren't
- 8:42aren't exactly human. Now that you kind of get an idea
- 8:45of who Neymour is, what exactly can he do?
- 8:48Besides being an alpha level mutant, he also has some pretty
- 8:51cool powers that I'm interested to see if they'll make it into
- 8:54the MCU. It's probably not.
- 8:57He's amphibious Physiology. His body was built for life
- 9:02underwater. So yeah, superhuman strength.
- 9:06All Atlanteans are strong, but Neymour is on a whole different
- 9:09level even compared to his own people.
- 9:13When he's underwater or in contact with water, his strength
- 9:15has been classified as Class 100, dropping to about class 85
- 9:19on the surface and slowly weakening as the longer he stays
- 9:24dry. Even so dry, Neymour has
- 9:27casually beaten Luke Cage, used him as a weapon, knocked out She
- 9:31Hulk with a surprise hit, while also matching the Sang blow for
- 9:35blow. Underwater he's dominated the
- 9:38Red Hulk, gone toe to toe with Savage Hulk, Hercules, Thor,
- 9:41Beta Ray, Bill Aries, Wonder Man, Century, and even made
- 9:45Thanos bleed. He's lifted thousands of tons
- 9:49with ease, swam against a temporal storm despite
- 9:53dehydration, and has been described as one of the most
- 9:56powerful beings on Earth, his strength once being called
- 10:00supreme beneath the sea. After temporarily absorbing
- 10:04Hydro Man's powers, he his strength skyrocketed far beyond
- 10:09his wild imaginations. Another thing he has is speed.
- 10:13He is faster than any Olympic level human on land, but his
- 10:18real speed shows in the water. While most Atlanteans top out
- 10:22around 60 mph, Namor hits speeds exceeding 300 knots, which is
- 10:27over 345 mph while swimming. He has incredible stamina,
- 10:34incredible agility and reflexes. Durability.
- 10:37His body is extremely tough. Healing factor.
- 10:40He does get hurt, but his body heals much faster and more
- 10:44completely than a human's or even an Atlantean's.
- 10:47Radiation Absorption. Neymar can absorb certain levels
- 10:50of radiation, though his upper limit isn't fully known.
- 10:54Longevity. Atlanteans age far more slowly
- 10:57than humans, with an average lifespan at about 120 years.
- 11:01Neymar is currently considered to be in his physical prime, and
- 11:05he just has been for who knows how long.
- 11:10Underwater breathing. That's an obvious one.
- 11:13Aquatic telepathy. He can mentally communicate with
- 11:16marine life and compel sea creatures to follow his
- 11:19commands. Electro location.
- 11:21Similar to certain fish, Neymour can sense faint electrical
- 11:25currents in water. Enhanced senses.
- 11:30His vision lets him see clearly through the dark ocean depths
- 11:33and murky waters, and his hearing is so sharp that he once
- 11:36claimed he could detect ocean currents shifting by a single
- 11:39degree. He claimed it Flights Neymour's
- 11:44iconic ankle wings allow him to fly extreme speeds fast enough
- 11:48to outpace a military jet. So that's kind of cool.
- 11:52Water manipulation. After temporarily siphoning
- 11:55Hydro Man's powers, Neymour gained control over water
- 11:58itself. So he used his ability to part
- 12:00massive bodies of water and even flood a prison cell thousands of
- 12:04miles away from an ocean as a sub subdivision under that rain
- 12:12manipulation. On one occasion, Namor summoned
- 12:15a heavy rainstorm powerful enough to douse Johnny Storm's
- 12:18flame from mid flight, which is so rude.
- 12:22Along with these abilities, he's also an expert in fighting.
- 12:25He is a bold diplomat. He has diplomatic immunity as
- 12:29the leader of a sovereign nation.
- 12:31He often visits the United States or United Nations for
- 12:34political reasons. He employs diplomatic immunity
- 12:37during these trips, which I would too.
- 12:40He's an expert tactician. He's multilingual.
- 12:44He speaks virtually every language on Earth.
- 12:47He's a skilled engineer. He is a talented business
- 12:51executive. And he's actually very talented
- 12:54in sculpting. It's something he does not want
- 12:57surface dwellers to know. Some of his work includes busts
- 13:01of Sue Storm. So, yeah.
- 13:04So you know all the good stuff about Neymour, but what are some
- 13:08of his weaknesses? You know, besides hot blondes
- 13:11who are in a relationship? Oxygen imbalance.
- 13:14Neymour has a known weakness. When he spends too much time
- 13:18either underwater or on land, staying in just one environment
- 13:22for too long can throw his oxygen levels off completely out
- 13:25of whack. Bipolar tendencies.
- 13:28When that imbalance kicks in, Neymour becomes extremely short
- 13:32tempered and has trouble thinking clearly or logically.
- 13:35Basically when they say he's seeing red, he's seeing red.
- 13:40Head injuries under certain, not fully understood conditions.
- 13:43Neymour has shown an odd vulnerability to head trauma.
- 13:47In rare cases, a well placed blow like being struck by a lead
- 13:51pipe and an by an ordinary human has knocked him out.
- 13:54He has major PDSDA. Big reason behind Neymour's
- 13:58emotional instability is severe psychological trauma from World
- 14:02War 2. Witnessing and participating in
- 14:05atrocities on both sides left deep, deep scars.
- 14:09Dehydration that is obvious. Pollution.
- 14:12Polluted water is bad news for Neymour.
- 14:15Exposure to it can harm his Physiology and significantly
- 14:19reduce his effectiveness of his physical abilities.
- 14:22And his ankle wings. Even though Neymour's ankle
- 14:26wings don't provide lift on their own, they're essentially
- 14:29his ability to fly. If their damage are destroyed,
- 14:31he is grounded, and they also heal very slowly.
- 14:35After losing them in the past, it took a long time for them to
- 14:38fully grow back. So that is Neymour Mackenzie,
- 14:42the submariner. He is a character with the
- 14:47biggest back story, which it was very, very hard to put into one
- 14:52episode that was not an hour long.
- 14:54I don't want to talk for an hour long.
- 14:56So, but yeah, he is an iconic character.
- 15:00He set the tone for very many, many characters in Marvel Comics
- 15:04and other comic publishers. So yeah, that's Neymour.
- 15:08He's a toxic little thing, and I love the toxicity.
- 15:12So we are getting him in Avengers Doomsday and we're also
- 15:16getting Sue Storm in Avengers Doomsday.
- 15:18So I'm very, very interested to see that dynamic.
- 15:21But I'm pretty sure it's going to be nothing more than him
- 15:24checking her out and her rolling her eyes at him.
- 15:27It's something more tame than you know, when he wants
- 15:32kidnapped her to make her marry him.
- 15:34And then Reed was like, I'm going to kill him.
- 15:37And then Reed just kind of beat the brakes off on those things.
- 15:40Little things. We all go through it.
- 15:42It's fine. So I hope you liked this
- 15:45episode. I hope you will like and
- 15:47subscribe, and I hope you have a marvelous day.
