- 0:20Speaker 1: K k k les, gentlemen, I have your attention. Please.
- 0:56Speaker 1: The show starts in right seven six hard cool.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Hey everyone, this is your girl Scie book out eight
- 1:34Speaker 2: four three, And it is another Tuesday night tonight actually
- 1:40Speaker 2: and well today actually in Charleston, it's the first day
- 1:44Speaker 2: of school. Oh my god, welcome back to school, and
- 1:49Speaker 2: some of you guys, welcome back to the library.
- 1:52Speaker 3: We hope your first day was great.
- 1:54Speaker 2: You know all the jitters I called my too little,
- 1:58Speaker 2: I call my two little broke besties.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I talked to their mom. But when I get off.
- 2:05Speaker 2: The podcast, called back to them, and I got my
- 2:08Speaker 2: older nephews, the oldest in the middle one call and
- 2:13Speaker 2: check on them. But happy first day. So I know
- 2:18Speaker 2: you often say, oh, Trace, what book we're gonna have tonight,
- 2:22Speaker 2: What author we're gonna have tonight, But unfortunately, because of
- 2:26Speaker 2: the first day of school, our author had to cancel.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Why But always remember it's your chance to get to
- 2:35Speaker 2: know me. So the last time we did this show,
- 2:39Speaker 2: I had questions that were submitted from another author friend,
- 2:44Speaker 2: And now I'm gonna go ahead and answer to the
- 2:46Speaker 2: one that I didn't get a chance to answer. Okay,
- 2:49Speaker 2: but if you have a question for me, go ahead
- 2:51Speaker 2: and submit it any chat, it'll appear on the stream and.
- 2:55Speaker 3: I'll answer your question. Okay.
- 2:57Speaker 2: So the background at c book yal eight four to three.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I live in South Carolina in the eight four to
- 3:07Speaker 2: three area code. So that's how that came together. Loving
- 3:12Speaker 2: mother of two twenty three year old male, my oldest boy,
- 3:19Speaker 2: and the ten year old diva who's been clowning me
- 3:23Speaker 2: about my age because she's learning about the civil rights error.
- 3:29Speaker 2: So every day there's some joke about my age. Today
- 3:34Speaker 2: she came to me and she had this book and
- 3:37Speaker 2: she said, Mommy, do you know any of these.
- 3:38Speaker 3: People in the book?
- 3:39Speaker 2: I said no, not really, Well this was the nineteen
- 3:43Speaker 2: something and another she said, weren't you alive back then?
- 3:47Speaker 2: You know what I'm through with you again? Every time
- 3:50Speaker 2: it's a back then older and she liked the top
- 3:53Speaker 2: of my great head. So that's where we are. So
- 4:00Speaker 2: we do have a question. And the question said what
- 4:04Speaker 2: inspire you to start your book blog and how that
- 4:08Speaker 2: evolved since she began, Oh, when I first started my
- 4:13Speaker 2: book blog? Lord, it has to be over Lord, it's
- 4:18Speaker 2: been a long time. Once are getting close to maybe
- 4:22Speaker 2: somewhere the range of five to ten years. It's been
- 4:25Speaker 2: a while.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Let's just say that.
- 4:29Speaker 2: My reviews were not as in.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Depth as it were. As they were.
- 4:37Speaker 2: It started off, this book was good. I recommend this book.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I like the cover. But as you study your craft
- 4:51Speaker 2: or let's say, pay attention to what you're doing and
- 5:00Speaker 2: give more thought to details, and it expounded. I now
- 5:05Speaker 2: interview you authors. I give them a chance to have
- 5:09Speaker 2: a podcast interview or blog interview. So that's one of
- 5:13Speaker 2: the things to change. It's going to change again. I'm
- 5:19Speaker 2: going to start doing pieces just randomly giving you guys
- 5:24Speaker 2: thoughts about the book industries. Okay, so that's that's one
- 5:28Speaker 2: of the things that has changed. I'm just wanting to
- 5:34Speaker 2: be more consistent, which is on me, you guys.
- 5:39Speaker 3: So that's I would say has.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Been the biggest change. Okay. Ooh, this one is a
- 5:50Speaker 2: good question. Do you prefer physical book eat books or audiobooks?
- 5:58Speaker 2: And why ebooks? Physical books? Not too often. I will
- 6:10Speaker 2: read them if they're given to me, And that is
- 6:13Speaker 2: how you would like to review your book. I will
- 6:15Speaker 2: do a physical book. I am an e book person.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Why because I can carry the book anywhere as long
- 6:21Speaker 2: as I got a phone or some type of electronic
- 6:24Speaker 2: device I can do and read, do the review or
- 6:28Speaker 2: read the book. Audio books is the last thing I
- 6:32Speaker 2: want to do. I have a tendency to when I'm reading,
- 6:37Speaker 2: I hear the voice, and if the voice does not
- 6:41Speaker 2: match the voice of the audiobook in my head, then
- 6:46Speaker 2: that's like a done deal. I remember reading a street book.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I turned around and listen to the book. The voice
- 6:59Speaker 2: was no offense, none whatsoever, but the way it was
- 7:07Speaker 2: read it just didn't correlate with the book. And I
- 7:12Speaker 2: did speak to the author about that and she said,
- 7:14Speaker 2: I was wondering, I just chose an automated voice. Was like, well,
- 7:19Speaker 2: you need to redo that. So me, I'm an ebooker. Okay.
- 7:28Speaker 2: The next question I have is, let's see, oh curious.
- 7:38Speaker 2: It says, how do you choose what's books to read
- 7:45Speaker 2: and review? That's on you, you guys. That is on
- 7:50Speaker 2: the author to send me the book the request a review.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I am working with another group and she sends me books,
- 8:02Speaker 2: and how the way she does it. She sends me
- 8:05Speaker 2: a suybnopsis of a bunch of books, and I choose
- 8:08Speaker 2: the ones I want to read. There are some authors
- 8:11Speaker 2: that will contact me and say, hey, I would like
- 8:14Speaker 2: you to do a review on my book. The only
- 8:18Speaker 2: books I will not do a review on is those
- 8:22Speaker 2: a fantasy, mystery, and sci fi.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I will try if.
- 8:29Speaker 2: The author really, really really wants me to do it,
- 8:32Speaker 2: but I kind of shy away from those books.
- 8:35Speaker 3: And the reason because.
- 8:38Speaker 2: It's not my strongest genre to read and.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I do.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Want to give more to it, but it just doesn't
- 8:51Speaker 2: hold my attention and I do not want to fault
- 8:54Speaker 2: the author for that. Okay, So how.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Do you choose what's book to review?
- 9:00Speaker 2: Send it to me or you can get the publisher.
- 9:02Speaker 3: To send it to me.
- 9:03Speaker 2: But long as the request is send to me and
- 9:05Speaker 2: it's not those three, I'll be happy to okay. Our
- 9:14Speaker 2: next question, you guys, This one is sounded hard for
- 9:21Speaker 2: me because I don't know what I would say, but
- 9:25Speaker 2: I'm gonna let you all tell you a question. It says,
- 9:30Speaker 2: what's one book you think everyone should read at least
- 9:33Speaker 2: once in their lifetime. One book everyone should read. I
- 9:46Speaker 2: know this is gonna sound really really cliche with you guys,
- 9:52Speaker 2: but of course I'm gonna say the Bible. That's just
- 9:58Speaker 2: one book that's gonna guide us the everything, especially with
- 10:02Speaker 2: the craziness is going on nowadays. As a child, I
- 10:12Speaker 2: would feel that that book would be The Three Chinese
- 10:14Speaker 2: Brothers or was the Five Chinese three or five? That
- 10:19Speaker 2: book was very profound as a kid, as a tween
- 10:29Speaker 2: and young adult, the skin that I'm in. Okay, I
- 10:39Speaker 2: put those ones up on my blog. I think that's great.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Next week I'm gonna have a blog of great back
- 10:46Speaker 2: to school reads. But those would be the books you guys. Yeah, yeah,
- 11:05Speaker 2: here's my next question. This question says, who are some
- 11:17Speaker 2: of your favorite authors and what draws.
- 11:21Speaker 3: You to your work.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I did away with favorite authors, and now you think
- 11:29Speaker 2: of like, really, Patrice, I really did away with favorite authors.
- 11:32Speaker 3: The reason being is.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Too many. But if I have to choose a favorite
- 11:44Speaker 2: book that stuck out to me and I just saw
- 11:46Speaker 2: this book for the first time in a while, and
- 11:50Speaker 2: it's called Staying Ground by Chris Victoria Christopher Murray stand
- 11:55Speaker 2: Your Ground, and it's exactly how it says. Okay, I
- 12:01Speaker 2: do recommend that book, but I do not have a favorite.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Author.
- 12:12Speaker 2: But if I have to recommend five to read, of course,
- 12:17Speaker 2: it would be any of the divas in the Crew,
- 12:23Speaker 2: Trevita Angela, Latanya Black Diamond Alma who now has a
- 12:30Speaker 2: coloring book. Congratulations. I would recommend them. I recommend Keith Williams,
- 12:41Speaker 2: Keith Kareem Williams, Teresa Patterson. Uh, who else would I pick?
- 12:54Speaker 3: Treasure Hernandez and Sharon Draper.
- 13:00Speaker 2: And if you know this, only to those books are mainstream,
- 13:03Speaker 2: because I'm really not a fan of mainstream authors. Okay,
- 13:08Speaker 2: there's one author who everybody is read. She's very mainstream.
- 13:16Speaker 2: But I just feel that sometime the mainstream authors kind
- 13:19Speaker 2: of loses their audience because they're like, hey, I just
- 13:22Speaker 2: put this book out there, you're going to read and
- 13:24Speaker 2: go on about her happy very way. I do remember
- 13:28Speaker 2: wanting to read a book by this mainstream author and
- 13:34Speaker 2: she said on a not a television a radio broadcast
- 13:42Speaker 2: that I don't care if people don't like my book.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I've already gotten paid for it. Well, I won't be
- 13:48Speaker 2: reading your book because that means you didn't put the
- 13:53Speaker 2: love into it. You didn't you didn't put the care
- 13:56Speaker 2: into it. You didn't you know, nurture the book. You
- 14:00Speaker 2: just put something together rang with it. So those are
- 14:05Speaker 2: some of my authors I would recommend that you read. Ooh,
- 14:16Speaker 2: this is a good question. You guys, and it's kind
- 14:28Speaker 2: of piggybacks off the how do you choose what books
- 14:33Speaker 2: to read and review? The question says do you stick
- 14:37Speaker 2: to specific genres or read widely across different ones. I
- 14:45Speaker 2: am a culprit of the stick to the genre I love,
- 14:52Speaker 2: and that is bad. As a book reviewer, that is
- 14:56Speaker 2: very bad. But I don't want I.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Give the wrong review for a book because.
- 15:04Speaker 2: I'm not liking this genre. So that's why I said
- 15:07Speaker 2: when I review books, I kind of stay with the
- 15:10Speaker 2: genre that I love.
- 15:15Speaker 3: So wiley across different ones, I really can. I remember
- 15:20Speaker 3: I had a co worker. I told her to go
- 15:22Speaker 3: on the shelves, choose.
- 15:23Speaker 2: A book, and I will read the book. She chose
- 15:28Speaker 2: an Amish book. I looked at her like, who are
- 15:30Speaker 2: you playing with? And that ain't gonna cut it.
- 15:33Speaker 3: You can put that book on the show.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I had one coworker give me a mystery book. Couldn't
- 15:40Speaker 2: get into that. So I am really urban romance Erodica
- 15:49Speaker 2: Street look lit contemporary. Uh. I would do some young adult.
- 15:57Speaker 2: I love children's books, but yeah, I mean like specific dramas.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I'm sorry, I can't do it. Okay, this question is
- 16:13Speaker 2: a great question. The reason why I say it's a
- 16:15Speaker 2: great question is because I get this whole lot when
- 16:18Speaker 2: it comes to reviewing books, and I do understand why
- 16:23Speaker 2: the authors would ask me this question. And the question
- 16:26Speaker 2: is how do you handle reviewing the book you didn't enjoy?
- 16:32Speaker 2: I will never, ever, ever give a one star view,
- 16:39Speaker 2: even if your book has spelling or grammar grammar grammar errors.
- 16:46Speaker 3: As you could tell, I'm not a proper speaker, So
- 16:50Speaker 3: if you.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Have those issues in your book, I may de duct
- 16:54Speaker 2: some point, but I will never give a one star. Okay.
- 16:59Speaker 3: I think the lows I've ever done has been three.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Okay. I feel no books should deserve one star, and
- 17:07Speaker 2: the reason for that is because it's your blood, sweat
- 17:12Speaker 2: and tears. Okay. Giving somebody a one star is somebody
- 17:19Speaker 2: cooking you water. Okay, nobody's gonna well, I hope nobody
- 17:25Speaker 2: cooks you water.
- 17:27Speaker 3: But that's my equivalent number one star.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Okay. Even if I do a three star, I will
- 17:33Speaker 2: pre email the author and say, here's the issues that
- 17:38Speaker 2: are inside your book, and I will give them the
- 17:41Speaker 2: opportunity to say would you like me to post a review?
- 17:47Speaker 2: Or would you like me not to post a review?
- 17:50Speaker 2: Some authors say I would love for you to post
- 17:52Speaker 2: a review. I would like to make the changes, and
- 17:55Speaker 2: then I would like you to read read the book
- 17:59Speaker 2: I've had. That happened, and it was the second time around.
- 18:03Speaker 2: It got four and a half stars because they really
- 18:06Speaker 2: paid attention to the things that I said in the review.
- 18:10Speaker 2: So there are books that I do not enjoy that
- 18:16Speaker 2: I review, but you will never get under a three star.
- 18:22Speaker 2: That's just totally disrespectful. If you get ain't lowered than that. Okay,
- 18:34Speaker 2: this one says, what is the most memorable interaction you
- 18:43Speaker 2: had with an author or a fellow book lover. This
- 18:46Speaker 2: was crazy, you, guys. I was at work and this
- 18:50Speaker 2: young lady came to me and she was like, I've
- 18:52Speaker 2: seen you before. I said, oh, yeah, I've been here,
- 18:55Speaker 2: you know, at this location thirteen years.
- 18:57Speaker 1: You know.
- 18:57Speaker 2: She's like, no, no, no, no, I've seen you before.
- 19:00Speaker 2: And I was like, okay.
- 19:03Speaker 3: The child comes up to.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Me and said, you were the lady that read that
- 19:07Speaker 2: book about the monster in the back of the book.
- 19:11Speaker 2: I said yeah, I said, I read it at a school.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I said, so, I guess you go to good one.
- 19:16Speaker 2: He's like, yeah, do you have that book here? I said, well,
- 19:20Speaker 2: I do not.
- 19:20Speaker 3: But you know what I'll do.
- 19:22Speaker 2: I'll get that book and have it come to this
- 19:24Speaker 2: library for you. So we put the book on hold.
- 19:28Speaker 2: The child had to be somewhere between six and eight
- 19:32Speaker 2: years old, okay, So we put the book on hole
- 19:35Speaker 2: then left. They came back about two three leads later
- 19:40Speaker 2: and he came and he showed me the book. I
- 19:42Speaker 2: got the book. I said, but do you remember there's
- 19:45Speaker 2: a monster at the end of the book. He said,
- 19:48Speaker 2: sh don't tell mommy. She's never had it before. I said, okay,
- 19:53Speaker 2: so you're gonna read the book to mommy. You're gonna
- 19:54Speaker 2: have mommy read the book to you. And she was like, well,
- 19:57Speaker 2: of course he can't read. That's well out him.
- 20:00Speaker 3: I say, can you guys can read it together?
- 20:03Speaker 2: And they did read it together, and she came back
- 20:05Speaker 2: and she said thank you, and he was just the sweetest,
- 20:10Speaker 2: the one, Oh my god, you're so cute. That that
- 20:14Speaker 2: was the best interaction I've had from a kid. Now
- 20:20Speaker 2: from an adult. I have this one patron who always
- 20:24Speaker 2: calls me the black girl with the book, And when
- 20:28Speaker 2: she comes in the library, the first thing she says
- 20:31Speaker 2: to me is hit baby. That's how she talks and
- 20:35Speaker 2: I was like, how are you? She said, I need
- 20:38Speaker 2: them thugy thuggy books. Let's meet the thuggy douggie books. Giryeah,
- 20:42Speaker 2: the one my son don't want me reading. I love her,
- 20:45Speaker 2: I haven't seen it in her whiles. I hope she
- 20:47Speaker 2: comes in pretty shoot, pretty soon. But she she's the
- 20:51Speaker 2: older lady about an elate sixty seventy. Don't give her
- 20:58Speaker 2: nothing spicy. She's just not want to read the spicy books.
- 21:03Speaker 2: She just wanted the thuggy dougie books. So those were
- 21:07Speaker 2: some memorable interactions that I've had with fellow book lovers.
- 21:18Speaker 2: I'm gonna take one more question, and here's that question.
- 21:28Speaker 2: You guys, how do you balance reading for pleasure with
- 21:37Speaker 2: reading for content creation? I do not read for content creation.
- 21:43Speaker 2: That doesn't make any sense to me. I read for
- 21:47Speaker 2: pleasure and that pleasure turns into content creation. So now
- 21:53Speaker 2: I do not read for content creation.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Now, if this question and is saying, if I'm reading
- 22:04Speaker 4: like factual, I'm not a nonfiction type person.
- 22:09Speaker 2: I've read some biographies, but I think the last nonfiction
- 22:14Speaker 2: book I read was Girl Fiction Crown by Queen Latifa.
- 22:22Speaker 2: But I'm not a big excuse me I'm not a
- 22:25Speaker 2: big nonfiction fan, okay, so my reading is really just
- 22:31Speaker 2: for pleasure or reviewing, and reviewing is my pleasure. So
- 22:36Speaker 2: if we're talking about reading for content creation, now, so
- 22:41Speaker 2: what I'm reading is the content.
- 22:43Speaker 3: That pleasure is the content.
- 22:45Speaker 2: So yeah, so that is my last question for tonight
- 22:50Speaker 2: you guys. Just remember I'm going to be here every
- 22:54Speaker 2: Tuesday night. Now. Next week, I think that's my trip
- 22:59Speaker 2: or header. I think I got three authors coming to
- 23:01Speaker 2: you guys next week. That is going to be a
- 23:03Speaker 2: lot of fun. If you wanted to get your review
- 23:07Speaker 2: your book reviewed by me, contact me. I am scbook
- 23:12Speaker 2: gaal A four to three or sc book gally Friends
- 23:16Speaker 2: across all social media. The only one I don't have
- 23:20Speaker 2: the Blue Sky, and there's another one that I do
- 23:25Speaker 2: not have, some new one Lemon eight. Yeah, but everything
- 23:30Speaker 2: is sc book galt A four to three just how
- 23:34Speaker 2: it sounds, and sc bookut Inference. So I'm on Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram,
- 23:47Speaker 2: and we have a website at www dot scbook galsenfriends

- 24:04Speaker 2: remember I'm going to be on every Tuesday night, like
- 24:07Speaker 2: I said before, And what else? What else?
- 24:11Speaker 3: What else we got going on?
- 24:13Speaker 2: Oh? I have two birthday shout outs, she got so
- 24:19Speaker 2: the first one they're both named Jackie. Okay.
- 24:24Speaker 3: One of them is from your son, Miss Jackie. Le
- 24:28Speaker 3: Kendrick says, happy.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Birthday and he can't wait to see you. And also
- 24:35Speaker 2: for me, Happy birthday, Miss Jackie. And the second Miss Jackie,
- 24:40Speaker 2: is my aunt Jackie. Happy birthday. That aunt you could say,
- 24:47Speaker 2: she's my mom aunt. She really does mean a lot
- 24:51Speaker 2: to me. She takes her kids on my own. The
- 24:54Speaker 2: only on I know calls me seven o'clock in the morning,
- 24:59Speaker 2: even on my day off. So don't call me seven
- 25:01Speaker 2: o'clock tomorrow morning in the morning, call me around but
- 25:04Speaker 2: ten thirty. But I just want to tell you, ladies,
- 25:07Speaker 2: thank you and happy birthday. Thank you for being a
- 25:10Speaker 2: part of my life. Thank you for being a part
- 25:12Speaker 2: of my kid's life. Just thank you for being the
- 25:15Speaker 2: strong woman that we know you guys to be. It's
- 25:18Speaker 2: a happy birthday to the missus Jackies and you guys.
- 25:22Speaker 3: That's it for me tonight.
- 25:24Speaker 2: But always remember there's no such thing as an old book,
- 25:27Speaker 2: because not everybody has read every book.
- 25:30Speaker 3: See you next Tuesday.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Good Night everyone, Bye,
