- 2:02It looks like he's in a wonderful place.
- 2:04I had that wonderful background. Looks like an animated
- 2:07background. We are now talking to USF
- 2:09basketball assistant head coach, our friend Tobin Anderson.
- 2:14Tobin, What's up, buddy? What's up fellas, How are you?
- 2:17We're good, man. I mean, obviously you're you're
- 2:21sitting pretty. You're an assistant coach for
- 2:22USF. You have a good basketball
- 2:24program over there. I believe that you're going to
- 2:27get another head coaching job more sooner than later.
- 2:30Tell us a little bit about your time in Iona and what worked and
- 2:34what didn't work and why obviously, did you choose USF in
- 2:38the offseason? Yeah, so, you know, it's been a
- 2:41crazy last few months, obviously, and and, you know,
- 2:45crazy the last few few years. And so we had to run an FDU, you
- 2:49know, D2 head coach to FDU. And things are all along pretty
- 2:51good with Iona. And you know, to be quite
- 2:55honest, we had a lot of rebuilding to do and I really
- 2:58felt good about where we were going, what we're doing.
- 3:00We were 12 and 4 the last two months, went to the conference
- 3:03championship and all of a sudden, you know, they were, I
- 3:06was told I couldn't, you know, I was done there.
- 3:08So it was a harsh, A harsh end to what I thought was a very
- 3:12promising situation. Like, I don't feel bad about
- 3:15what we did there at all. You know, it was a rebellion.
- 3:17I've, I've been a head, I've been a college coach, right?
- 3:20Six head jobs, right, Division Three, division two, Division
- 3:23One. My journey has been a little bit
- 3:24crazier than most. So I felt good about the
- 3:28direction we're heading. It didn't happen as quick is
- 3:31FDU, but like FDU was kind of a crazy one year, 10 month.
- 3:35That doesn't happen all the time.
- 3:37I mean, it's like it's like a minor miracle.
- 3:39Just be honest with you, right? So you can't walk in every place
- 3:43and, and go and win 2 NCAA games and go to the tournament and
- 3:46have all that kind of success. And so it took us a little more
- 3:48time to get it going in Iona. Not as quick as I wanted, not as
- 3:51quick as other people wanted. And but I think we had it going
- 3:54and I loved it. I actually had a really
- 3:56enjoyable year to be honest with you.
- 3:57I really enjoyed the team. I enjoyed the guys, the staff,
- 4:01we got to a really slow start and then we turned the whole
- 4:03thing around. So I actually really enjoyed the
- 4:05year and had a great time and have nothing but great memories
- 4:08until the until the very end, at the very end was not great.
- 4:11And so I'm now I'm so that happened and it was it was a
- 4:15shocking thing for me. And and you know, when this
- 4:18thing's those things happen to your staff, your family is
- 4:21affected more than anything else.
- 4:22You know, there we're we're we have to go find someplace else.
- 4:24So I had some options, but I think I found a great option in
- 4:28the University of South Florida. Brian Hodgson, he helped build
- 4:32both the Buffalo program, the Alabama program has an
- 4:34unbelievable success. Many, you know, people label him
- 4:38as an unbelievable recruiter, the Britain, but the best
- 4:40recruiter the country. He's also held a coach.
- 4:42He won 25 games the last couple years at Arkansas State, won the
- 4:45conference 2 times. And so I think we're in a great
- 4:47spot down here. It's obviously it's a great
- 4:49place to live. The sun shines.
- 4:52My pool's right outside my door right here.
- 4:53I get up in the morning, I go jump in, I jump in the pool.
- 4:55I swim around for a little bit. I come home at night and get in
- 4:57the pool again. It's not a bad life.
- 4:59My family's still up in New York for a few more weeks.
- 5:01I'm kind of I'm a bachelor here for a while.
- 5:04Don't call Jabba. Don't call Jabba.
- 5:07He might get you in the trouble. The door's always open down
- 5:10here. You want.
- 5:10To come. Hey 100%, I'm always in.
- 5:13Yeah, but it's Thomas got eligibility.
- 5:16It's a good place to live and, and, and we're going to get
- 5:19things going down here and make a run and, and go to the NCAA
- 5:22tournament. I'm lucky to be you're happy to
- 5:23be here and it's going to be a lot of fun.
- 5:25So I want to take your predecessor, obviously Rick
- 5:27Pitino at Iona, obviously making big waves at St.
- 5:30John's this year. They were #2 seed in the NCAA
- 5:31tournament. Did he?
- 5:33Do you have any connection with him?
- 5:34But when you got the Iona job and what is your thoughts,
- 5:36everything that's gone on with that program with St.
- 5:38John's? Well, first of all, he's one of
- 5:40the best, if not the best college coach is in the top
- 5:43three of all time, right. And there's there's no doubt
- 5:45about it. I mean, probably, you know, John
- 5:47Wood and Coach K and Rick Pitino as far as just having that kind
- 5:50of success. And so, yeah, man, I knew I knew
- 5:53of it. I knew of and we knew each other
- 5:54a little bit for the five star basketball camp.
- 5:56We we crossed paths a few times. I got the job.
- 5:59We talked a couple times here and there.
- 6:01But you know, listen, he's got he had a big job to do at St.
- 6:04John's and and he's an unbelievable job there.
- 6:06And that place was rocking this year.
- 6:07New York City was going, was going great and, and I think
- 6:09quite frankly, probably hurt us at Iona because I think Iona
- 6:12wanted to be do the same thing that Saint John's did.
- 6:14And is people will tell you it, you know, there's, there's with
- 6:17the money, the way it is now with the, with the NIL and now
- 6:20the revenue sharing, it's a different world.
- 6:22The whole thing's change. It's like you have to have the
- 6:25resources, the financial resources to compete at the
- 6:28highest level. And so he obviously has that at
- 6:30Saint John's, but he also is a hell of a coach and does a great
- 6:34job and knows how to to motivate young man and and get the most
- 6:38out of them. So he's done a great job of
- 6:39Saint John's, incredible and and it's fun to watch, to be
- 6:43honestly fun to watch. And and I'm excited to see they
- 6:45they they have a great class coming in this year.
- 6:47They should be a top three program in the country this year
- 6:49too. So number he listen, he was a
- 6:51great coach. Now, now, when he left, there
- 6:53wasn't much left at Iona. You know, I just be honest, he
- 6:56took, he took the took a lot of all the players and most of the
- 6:59furniture, a lot of things, but like that.
- 7:01And so we had to, we had to totally rebuild, which is fine.
- 7:04That's, that's part of what it is right now.
- 7:05And so I think as a college coach, you have to adjust.
- 7:09You have to, you have to figure out how to win this in this
- 7:12climate. And I think I can just say for
- 7:15being here for two months and being around Brian Hodgson,
- 7:17who's in Alabama, the highest level, I've learned a ton about
- 7:20recruiting and succeeding at this level, at the highest
- 7:23level, at the highest level. So Tobin, like you're obviously
- 7:28from Iowa, I'm from Nebraska, that that's part of it.
- 7:32But the one thing that I I always under try to understand,
- 7:36which I don't, is my son is now he's at a junior college.
- 7:41And so you've coached at so many different levels.
- 7:46What is the difference between those levels and how you get
- 7:52kids to either a different level, whether it's JUCO because
- 7:56I started V2 and then I went there.
- 7:58But you as a coach seeing it from a different perspective, me
- 8:02seeing it now as a father like I, I would like to know because
- 8:07I'm trying to learn every day and, and as we all should.
- 8:12But you as a coach seeing it through so many dynamics.
- 8:17How do you see what the? What is the difference?
- 8:21Let's see what I'll tell you right?
- 8:23When you cross the lines, it's, it's all the same, right?
- 8:26So we had, we had, you know, when I was in division two, we
- 8:30had a really good players, really good team.
- 8:32And when we made a run at FDU, we brought 3 starters from
- 8:36division two to Division One and they were three of the best
- 8:38players in the court in the NCAA tournament, right?
- 8:40We signed here at USFI. Think 4 guys who played who
- 8:43started at the division two level and now our transfer in
- 8:47Division One and are doing great.
- 8:48So there's great players. I don't care where you play
- 8:51JUCO, NAIA, division two, Division Three, Division One,
- 8:56You got to be a really good player at all levels to, to, to
- 8:58succeed. Then once you cross those lines,
- 9:00it's all the same. Obviously, you know that you go
- 9:03up the level more resources, more, more help more.
- 9:07You know, we got a strength coach, we got, we got a
- 9:09nutritionist, we got a we fly, we fly.
- 9:12We chartered all of our games. You know things.
- 9:14Listen, I I was in division two. We were driving vans to games.
- 9:17You know, like, I mean, I'm used to I'm like a blue.
- 9:19I'm like a. Hey, I've been there.
- 9:21I get it. Trust me.
- 9:22I know. I know.
- 9:24Nothing's going to bother. Nothing's going to bother me as
- 9:26far as like, well, this is not what is good as it should be,
- 9:29but like now you got the resources, so you have to be
- 9:31able to use those to the best of your ability.
- 9:33But I think at the end of the day, it's about getting the
- 9:36right kind of kids who compete, who play hard, who play together
- 9:39and want to do something special.
- 9:40And that's what you're trying to do.
- 9:41I don't care. You're at Division 321 JUCO
- 9:44Roberts that like, I'll tell you what, JUCO players and JUCO
- 9:47coaches are having a lot of success right now because
- 9:50they're used to kind of like scrambling and finding the right
- 9:52kind of mix and the right kind of formula.
- 9:54And I'm, you're seeing a lot of guys.
- 9:56I mean, the head coach at Texas Tech, Grant McCausland was a
- 9:59JUCO coach, right? Brian, Brian Hodge and my boss
- 10:01started out at junior college, right?
- 10:03There's a lot of guys in junior college.
- 10:05We're doing great things. And then it's kind of get the
- 10:07world's got a little bit crazy where it's like you have to put
- 10:10things together in a short period of time.
- 10:12And I think the key is just get the right kind of kids who can,
- 10:14who can who at the end of the day, it's still about competing,
- 10:18right? It's still about I don't care
- 10:19what, what level. It's about how, how hard you
- 10:21want to play, how much better you want to get.
- 10:22And so you got to find the right kind of guys who will do that.
- 10:25But I've, I've enjoyed all levels.
- 10:27Like I loved, I loved division two maybe most of all because
- 10:30we're just kind of a little more like hardcore blue collar.
- 10:33Like we walk in the gym and sometimes.
- 10:35Did you feel like you had something to prove?
- 10:37Because I wasn't that D1. Yep, a chip on your shoulder,
- 10:41right? And the best guys I've coached
- 10:43always had a chip on their shoulder.
- 10:44I think. I think that's, that's what you
- 10:46want to find guys who want to prove themselves.
- 10:48And that's why when I went to FTU and the three guys have
- 10:50brought with me, they were trying to prove, hey, we can
- 10:53play Division One. We're we're able to play at this
- 10:55level. And that kind of gave them an
- 10:57edge for that whole year. And I was a Division 2 coach.
- 11:00I wanted to prove too, that I could win at that level.
- 11:01That's kind of what what pisses me off about what happened.
- 11:04I own it because I'm like, we were still doing good things and
- 11:07moving in the right direction. And but the reality is sometimes
- 11:10people don't always see it that way.
- 11:12And people above you don't always see it that way.
- 11:14So you have to kind of like, that's the way it is and you
- 11:16move on. You know, what's been good for
- 11:17me is I've talked a lot of pro coaches and like, no, they just
- 11:20fired Tom Thibodeau for the Knicks, right?
- 11:22Tom Thibodeau, the team of the Eastern Conference finals.
- 11:25It is like that stuff happens sometimes.
- 11:28And like, you can't sit around and and worry about it or pity
- 11:31me or feel sorry for yourselves. You got to suck it up and go
- 11:34right back at it. We are talking to USF basketball
- 11:37assistant head coach Tobin Anderson.
- 11:39He's been on our show. He was the head coach of Iona
- 11:42last year, 17 and 17, a record that was over 500.
- 11:47Like you were saying, you know, being that you're 500, he
- 11:50shouldn't have been let go. But obviously Iona wanted to go
- 11:54another route. You know what's interesting to
- 11:56me, Tobin, I've I've never been a coach and I never tried to
- 12:00recruit players. I as a radio guy, you know, I
- 12:03try to recruit people to come on our show and how do I do that?
- 12:06I show them a different attitude, a different look to
- 12:09sports media. We're not like everybody else.
- 12:12And I want people to know we're not like every other
- 12:14interviewer. We go out there, we try to be
- 12:17different. We try to be funny.
- 12:18Well, we don't try. We just talk crazy.
- 12:20But the same thing when you go into a house and you're trying
- 12:24to recruit somebody. Now you have Rick Pitino or you
- 12:26have somebody of that or Coach K, these big names, Oh my God,
- 12:30or Nick Saban, you know when they go into your home, you're
- 12:33like, Oh my God, it's Nick Saban.
- 12:35He's sitting right in front of me.
- 12:37I watched him win 5 national championships and then you're
- 12:40like just enamored by who he is. Rick Pitino, he's been over
- 12:44there in the NBA. He's made hundreds of millions
- 12:47of dollars as a head coach and he's now coaching Saint Johns.
- 12:51So the first thing that pops in your head when you're you want
- 12:54to go over there to St. John's is when am I going to
- 12:56meet Rick Pitino? I don't care about this
- 12:58recruiter. I don't care about this lady
- 13:00coming into my house and telling me about my academic
- 13:03opportunities. I don't give a crap.
- 13:05I care about playing in the NBA and Rick goddamn Pitino.
- 13:09So you you're obviously, you're a head coach.
- 13:12You over there at D1 and you're walking into these kids houses,
- 13:15OK? And yeah, you have Rick Pitino.
- 13:18You have all these different guys coming.
- 13:19In OK, hold, hold on there. They don't do that as much as
- 13:23they used to. Well, I hold.
- 13:25On why? Why has that changed?
- 13:27But I'll let you answer that question.
- 13:29But I, I want to know how, how Tobin, when he's picking
- 13:32somebody that he wants to go to and, and try to sell to his
- 13:35parents. Do you go in there with a
- 13:38suitcase and a suit on and you say, I got to swindle his mom
- 13:43and hope his father's not a big asshole?
- 13:45Or are you going to go in there and you're going to say, listen,
- 13:48I'm going to wear my nice Jordans.
- 13:51I'm going to wear, you know, I'm going to wear my my Nike sweats
- 13:54and I'm going to walk right in and say, listen, come to my
- 13:57school because I'm going to let you hang free.
- 14:00I'm going to let those balls hang free.
- 14:02And mom and dad can come and watch you play anytime you want
- 14:06and you can sleep with this woman and that woman.
- 14:08It doesn't matter. Come to USF, come to you, come
- 14:12to Iona and you get a chance to experience what it is to be a
- 14:17great basketball player and work with a great head coach.
- 14:20Is that how you do it or do you do it?
- 14:22Tobin, That's why you know he wasn't a college at I.
- 14:26First of all, I wouldn't. By the way, Tobin.
- 14:29By the way, Tobin. He always stayed.
- 14:31I would have been a college athlete if I didn't hurt my
- 14:33knee. OK, I was a really great hockey
- 14:36player and I was playing. I was going to play D1 hockey
- 14:39and I hurt my knee. So obviously I'm not Jabba
- 14:42Chamberlain, who played for the New York Yankees, but maybe I
- 14:45was. I would have been drafted by the
- 14:46Maple Leafs, so the Montreal Canadiens, like some of my
- 14:49counter partners were when I played Team USA hockey.
- 14:51So eat your ass, Jabba. Go ahead, Tobin.
- 14:55First of all, I love Jabba. I remember watching Jabba.
- 14:57The Yankees enjoy that whole that whole that whole run, which
- 15:00was awesome. But listen, I I'm a little bit
- 15:03like you. You got to be unorthodox.
- 15:05Well, you don't have a big name or the big, the big all the the
- 15:08you know, the Patino, the Schefsky, the that behind you
- 15:11got to be a little bit different, right?
- 15:12You got to you got to sell. You got to sell your style.
- 15:15Like for us, like we always play up tempo, press, play fast, like
- 15:18play like an NBA style. That's how Brian plays here too
- 15:20at USF. So like you got to, you got to
- 15:22sell like there he is Java right there.
- 15:25You got to sell something different.
- 15:26Like that's like a chip on your shoulder.
- 15:28Try to prove yourself. Things have changed.
- 15:30Now it's about the money. I mean, the money, the money's
- 15:32the biggest. I mean, that's part of the
- 15:33conversation. We don't go into people's homes
- 15:35anymore as much anymore. We try to sell playing time.
- 15:38We try to sell style of play. We try to sell relationships,
- 15:41but the relationships are a lot quicker.
- 15:43Like a lot of these guys we have, we may only have them here
- 15:45for like 10 months. You know, the guards I handed F
- 15:48to you, they played 150 college games for me, 150, right?
- 15:53That's a lot of college basketball games.
- 15:55Guys we have now, most of them play one season, one season and
- 15:59then they move on. So it's a, it's a whole
- 16:00different world right now. So I just think those
- 16:02relationships are still important though.
- 16:04Like you got to be on the gym with them.
- 16:05You got to be part, you got to be part of their lives.
- 16:07You got to you guys spend time with them.
- 16:10I don't talk to the parents as much as I used to.
- 16:11You know, we talk to agents now. You talk to more people around
- 16:15them. It's like, I don't necessarily
- 16:17love doing that all the time. The idiots, the agents, Don't
- 16:21you love them? They're pros now, they're making
- 16:24money, they're professionals. They have to kind of deal with
- 16:26things themselves a little bit too, you know?
- 16:27How do you sell yourself to an agent?
- 16:29I mean, you're calling them up and saying, hey, I'm Tobin
- 16:32Anderson, your son or your because some of these guys have
- 16:36their fathers as their agent. Your son or your your cousin can
- 16:40come over here. Hey, I'll get I'll throw, I'll
- 16:43slip you 100 or I'll slip you on autographed jersey by Jabba
- 16:46Chamberlain. If you're a Jabba fan, just come
- 16:49over here to US S how do you do it?
- 16:51Like what do you say to them? You've been to Tampa.
- 16:54Like you should come down here and tell you what this is a it's
- 16:56a hell of a I mean, there are beaches and restaurants and bar
- 16:59scene and I was downtown this past weekend.
- 17:00I'm not. I was still downtown for a
- 17:04college. Were you at channel side or red?
- 17:06Channel side, channel side, waterside down there, that
- 17:09whole, that whole area on the Wall Street.
- 17:11I lived there for 13 years. I'll tell you what, if you're a
- 17:15college, college age or in that area somewhere, man, it's a it's
- 17:19a great place to live. Great.
- 17:20I mean, there's a great, great place to go out.
- 17:23Have you? Experienced South Tampa.
- 17:26I've been in for quite a few of those places already.
- 17:28I've been down to Ybor City, a lot of a lot of good spots down
- 17:33there. So you know, it's a great place
- 17:35to live, great place to go to school.
- 17:36They have some money now and our facilities are top notch.
- 17:41And listen, if we start winning, we'll sell out 15,000 people, be
- 17:44packed into our arena and and it's going to be big.
- 17:46We're playing a hell of a schedule playing, we're playing
- 17:48great teams. So it's a great, a great
- 17:51situation. And the biggest thing is, hey,
- 17:53you get better. You're playing a good style, got
- 17:55a chance to go play, you know, a lot of guys go play in the NBA
- 17:58or go play the G League or go play overseas.
- 18:00So it's a, it's a you got to sell that and, and sell those
- 18:03relationships. And you know, my boss, Brian
- 18:05Hodgson, he's put 15 guys in the NBA in the last five years.
- 18:09So he's had a lot of success putting guys from Alabama and
- 18:12they guys from Buffalo in the NBA.
- 18:13So we're, we're, we're trying to keep on doing that.
- 18:16So I wanted to ask about the kind of the modern changes in in
- 18:18college sports that we've seen. Obviously the transfer portal
- 18:20being the biggest 1. You saw Florida win a national
- 18:23championship this past year with a third year head coach and a
- 18:25lot of transfers. And you've seen a lot of these
- 18:27other programs really grow because of it too.
- 18:29And like you were saying, you're seeing a lot more stronger non
- 18:32conference scheduling than you saw in years past where they
- 18:33used to schedule in five years in advance.
- 18:35So what are your thoughts with that whole those whole changes
- 18:38and how do you think it's affected coaching from your
- 18:40standpoint as well? It's going to help the high
- 18:42major level because a lot of those guys are getting paid
- 18:44money now just and they'll they'll stay in college as
- 18:46opposed to going to the NBA and being a a second round pick or
- 18:49trying to hang around or whatever.
- 18:50They're making more money in college.
- 18:51They would be in the pros right now.
- 18:53So a lot of guys at the, the highest of the power, the power
- 18:56fours and the schools right in that, in that stratosphere are
- 19:00going to stay in college and make more money.
- 19:01So that the, that's a good thing for the, for those schools,
- 19:04right? The mid majors and low majors
- 19:06are getting killed because their best players are getting,
- 19:09getting eaten up by the, the high majors are getting poached
- 19:12by those schools. And so if a guy has a Goodyear
- 19:14playing for a low major, playing for an FDU, playing for Iona,
- 19:17well, somebody's going to come in and offer them $500,000 and
- 19:20they'll go play for a power four.
- 19:22So the power fours are going to be really good.
- 19:25They're playing, like you said, they're playing better
- 19:26schedules, the competition's better, more TV games.
- 19:30So that part's that part's gotten better.
- 19:32Like there's, you know, there's some really good players that
- 19:35are in college next year that in the past would have gone pro.
- 19:38So I think it's I think in that, in that respect, it's great.
- 19:41But for the rest of them, there's there's 250 Division One
- 19:45schools who don't belong in that level, right?
- 19:49And they're kind of like a fish out of water.
- 19:51Like what what is FDU have in common with Alabama, right?
- 19:55What's Iona have in common with Duke or Ohio State?
- 19:58They don't have their money is not even close to what what they
- 20:01have as far as revenue sharing the NIL stuff.
- 20:04So it's almost like two different worlds are exist right
- 20:08now, and one's one's a pretty good world and 1's.
- 20:12One's going a little bit. The the separations get old.
- 20:14Like to see what happened with with like Saint Peter's making a
- 20:17run and FDA making a run and Florida Atlantic not going to
- 20:22see as much of that anymore. It's like Shane McMahon.
- 20:24Remember that money song? I, I, I don't know.
- 20:27I, I do. I did watch wrestling at one
- 20:29point. Money, money, money, money,
- 20:30money. That song.
- 20:32That's what that's. What he's saying, but he always
- 20:34had money. No, I know, but I'm, I'm just
- 20:37thinking of the song. I'm thinking of the track here.
- 20:40You literally mentioned it or Ted Devios, see the money?
- 20:42What did they call him? The $1,000,000 man.
- 20:44So maybe that's what it is. Maybe they have Ted Diviasi
- 20:47hanging out. I don't know.
- 20:48I know he's dead broke now. He's an old rag.
- 20:50But anyways, go ahead, John. I just want to mention before
- 20:53Java, you asked you a question. So you mentioned you mentioned
- 20:55the FA youth team that obviously you played.
- 20:57You guys played and then they end up going to the Final Four.
- 20:59Elijah Martin was literally on that team and now he's with
- 21:01Florida and won a championship. Johnny Davis went to to
- 21:05Arkansas, went to Arkansas and then Vlad was in Michigan last
- 21:08year and three guys who were who were three, you know, three of
- 21:10the best players in the country last year who end up going to
- 21:13the the highest level. Their their combined salaries
- 21:15last year probably about $3,000,000.
- 21:19Sobin, what do you like obviously playing playing
- 21:23college sports and now having a son in college sports, right?
- 21:29Do you think what they're doing right now is beneficial?
- 21:33Like, and we've had this argument a lot about getting
- 21:36paid this another saying, but do you, do you think it's helping
- 21:42the game or do you think it's hurting in some type of capacity
- 21:47or is it creating parity to other teams that yeah, if you,
- 21:53if you're not going to get that. And now with what just happened,
- 21:56obviously we saw the $2.8 billion thing that 20.5 goes to
- 22:01this school and whatever. Do you think that's helped or
- 22:07hurt? Because I, I love seeing it from
- 22:11because as a player, I would have loved to got paid and do
- 22:15what I do. Like I'm sitting in a College
- 22:16World Series and I'm the only person to ever win from Nebraska
- 22:20and I would have got paid a lot of money.
- 22:24Do you think it's it's hurt the guys athletically?
- 22:29And that's the question, do they work harder?
- 22:32Do they work less because they know they're getting paid?
- 22:36That's a great, that's a great question, right, Because it's,
- 22:38it's funny. It's like it's a lot of Times
- 22:40Now, you know, I told two of our players today, I've said like,
- 22:43you know, you guys are pros now you got to be in shape all the
- 22:45time. There's no excuse for not being
- 22:47in shape. Like you're getting paid like
- 22:48you're, you're basically like, you know, if you went to trap
- 22:51the, the Lakers tomorrow, you come in in unbelievable shape.
- 22:54You come in mentally ready to go, you'd be arrested, You'd be
- 22:57all, all that kind of stuff. I said it's the same thing in
- 22:58college. Now you got to you got to get
- 22:59yourself in great position to to have you want to make money.
- 23:04You're going to have a great year.
- 23:05And I do think there's a motivation now to have a great
- 23:07year, can help you earn more money, and I think it's a great
- 23:11thing, Jabba. So do you see it on both sides?
- 23:14Like it could be good. And bad, well, definitely bad.
- 23:16Could be bad too. Could absolutely be bad.
- 23:18And guys get paid almost so they can get lazy.
- 23:20They get, I see it all the time. Guys start spending money on
- 23:22stupid things and they buy, they buy things they shouldn't buy.
- 23:25I mean, what, what's I'd tell you what, what, what's, what's
- 23:28bad is that the NCAA has not done anything as far as
- 23:30educational programs to help kids who are making this kind of
- 23:33money as far as like financial education.
- 23:36Like we do it ourselves. And we'll have people come in
- 23:37and talk to our guys and speak about that.
- 23:39Those guys who had no money, who were all of a sudden making
- 23:41$500,000, who have no idea how to open a checking account, how
- 23:46to invest it, how to pay taxes. There's a lot of parts of that.
- 23:49NCA has done nothing as far as like educating those student
- 23:54athletes. I think there's a part of it
- 23:55like once you get paid, you know, I've made it.
- 23:58You know, we had guys, you know, making not that much.
- 24:00Funny thing I have, I made it. I made it.
- 24:02I'm gonna go buy a gold chain and go buy a go buy a car and
- 24:06life is good. Well, listen, that that money
- 24:08goes, as we all know, it goes by pretty fast and it's one.
- 24:11But I do agree, though, that they should get paid.
- 24:14I think student athletes deserve to get paid.
- 24:16There's so much money being made by all these teams, all these
- 24:19programs. And for a long time, coaches
- 24:21made lots of money. You're you're building new
- 24:24buildings, you're building, you're putting on new things,
- 24:26you're hiring new people. So they definitely deserve to
- 24:28get paid. I just think we need to put
- 24:31things in place to help them understand like this might be
- 24:34the most money they'll ever make.
- 24:36You know, you don't make a ton of money overseas playing
- 24:38professor overseas. You don't make crazy money.
- 24:40But right now they're guys in, in our league making half
- 24:43$1,000,000, you know, or more. That's a lot of money for a kid
- 24:47who's 20 years old and has no idea what to do with it.
- 24:50You know, we have guys in our team and I owner last year who
- 24:52transferred, who are making crazy amounts of money.
- 24:55And it's like, I hope they don't don't.
- 24:56And I talked to them all the time like don't, don't waste
- 24:58your money. Don't make sure you're smart.
- 24:59Make sure you invest, make sure you save it.
- 25:01But we need something in place to help them.
- 25:04We are talking to USF basketball assistant head coach Tobin
- 25:09Anderson. I don't want to keep you on too
- 25:10much longer, but this story has really burst my bubble.
- 25:15OK, You are a recruiter, you're a head coach and this guy is on
- 25:19the Bill Simmons show and with this this idiot writer
- 25:24costerman, I call him colostomy bag, OK, Because that's all he
- 25:27is. And he comes out and he tries to
- 25:30compare probably the best American born player we've seen
- 25:34come out of college basketball in about let's just say 12
- 25:37years, OK? And Cooper Flag.
- 25:40And he had the audacity to come out.
- 25:43As we all know, he's a former writer.
- 25:45He's not a writer anymore for anybody but himself.
- 25:49He should be writing about something else, maybe something
- 25:52he does. And when he's sitting on a
- 25:53toilet, I don't want to listen to him talk about Cooper Flag.
- 25:56But he came out and tried to compare Cooper Flag to Deadlift
- 26:01Strip. Now, as a recruiter, as a guy
- 26:04that knows a little bit about college basketball, and I'm sure
- 26:07you do and I know you do because we've had you on this show and
- 26:11you've coached Division One schools, D2 schools, and you're
- 26:14a great coach. Could you even think of just how
- 26:20stupid a dumb person could be comparing this kid to to a guy
- 26:27that was a good player but nowhere close to the talent as
- 26:30Cooper Flag? And please tell me what this guy
- 26:34is drinking, because he might be drinking something that has a
- 26:37lot of protein but you shouldn't be drinking if you know what I
- 26:40mean. Cooper Flag is a generational
- 26:42talent man. I saw him at the, at the, at the
- 26:45EYBL, the Nike thing like 2 years ago.
- 26:48And I'm like, man, there's I mean, I thought you were going
- 26:50to say because I hadn't heard the conversation.
- 26:51I hadn't been following Bill Simmons that much.
- 26:54I thought I'm going to see Larry run for your life.
- 26:55I thought it was compared to Larry Bird.
- 26:58I'm like, why be a that's a comparison.
- 27:00I think Cooper flag will be a, you know, a ten time All Star,
- 27:05first team, all NBA guy. He's got like he's got all the
- 27:08talent, all that ability. He's also got mentally, he's a
- 27:11he's a tough dude. I mean he went to Duke this year
- 27:13and he handled all that exposure, all that all that hype
- 27:16and he was fantastic. So no, I think he's a
- 27:18generational talent. I think he's fantastic.
- 27:19He's going to be great. Man, I wish the Mavs would have
- 27:23kept Luca. It'd been fun to see that that
- 27:26whole. Thing they would have never
- 27:27gotten him. They would have never gotten
- 27:28him. I think the NBA was pretty much
- 27:30handing him over. The Spurs probably would.
- 27:33Have gotten him Errol. Errol.
- 27:34Tell him what you think the NBA is.
- 27:37What do you mean? What do I think the NBA is?
- 27:38The LJA, LeBron James Association?
- 27:41It's the LeBron James Association.
- 27:43It's not the NBA, it's the LJA. It's you Like what?
- 27:47I, I think he's a generational town.
- 27:49I think he's the second greatest basketball player all of all
- 27:53time, even though he likes to say he's the greatest and so
- 27:55does his family. And he wants to tell everybody
- 27:57he's retiring when he's not retiring.
- 27:59Why would you retire when you're getting 52 and a half million
- 28:01dollars? You'd have to be stupid.
- 28:03LeBron James thinks we're stupid, so we're going to
- 28:06believe it. The fact is, is the NBA wanted
- 28:09Luka Doncic to go over there to the Lakers because the Lakers
- 28:12need another player to lean on after LeBron James goes away.
- 28:17And we all know that's what the NBA is doing.
- 28:20And because of that, the LJA handed over Cooper flag to The
- 28:26Mavericks and said, here you go. We're sorry.
- 28:29We're sorry that you gave up, Lucas.
- 28:31So you know what we're going to do?
- 28:32We're going to give you even a better player.
- 28:34You got damn idiots. That's what the NBA is, the LJA,
- 28:39the LeBron James Association, or you could call them the GA.
- 28:46No, the GI. God damn.
- 28:49God, GDI association. Goddamn idiot association.
- 28:54That's even better, but it's the LJA.
- 28:57I mean, we all know LeBron James runs the lead.
- 28:59How many years? What's he played 22 years?
- 29:01I mean, it's pretty impressive what he's done.
- 29:02Yeah, he's. Unbelievable.
- 29:04He's not human. He's not human.
- 29:06He's not human. He's like 20 years, two years.
- 29:08Playing and then he spent 12 years of the GM and now five
- 29:11years as the commissioner of the league.
- 29:13It's pretty simple to being. You know more it's a little I
- 29:16will agree with that. It's a little bit a little bit
- 29:18too much. So just.
- 29:18Say it. Say it.
- 29:19The LJA LeBron James Association.
- 29:22That's what it is. It is.
- 29:24I'm going back to the original Cooper Flag is a stud.
- 29:27He's going to be a great player. He's going to be.
- 29:29Hear that fish? Hear that fish, Sink that in.
- 29:32Sink that in for that Mister colostomy bag.
- 29:34That idiot on that stupid show. That's a.
- 29:38That's a bad. Oh my God, what a horrible
- 29:40comparison. That's a terrible comparison.
- 29:43I thought you'd say Larry Bird. I'm like, it's two different
- 29:46guys, but like, you know, whatever.
- 29:48That's he's the white. And I said this, I've watched
- 29:51Cooper Flag develop as a high school player.
- 29:53We've been trying to get him on on the show for a long time.
- 29:56I've been following him since 8th grade.
- 29:57He reminds me of the white Kevin Durant.
- 30:01That's who he reminds me of his game.
- 30:03What he did, what Kevin Durant played when he was over there in
- 30:06Texas with the Longhorns and he did.
- 30:08He was a good shooter. He's a little bit better.
- 30:10Well, he's he's definitely better as a shooter than Cooper
- 30:13Flag. But his game is all around game.
- 30:16And remember Kevin Durant developed his shot even better
- 30:19in the NBA. He wasn't the shooter he is now,
- 30:22but when he came to the NBAI think he's no don't like Kevin.
- 30:26Durant, he had a 2 to one assist to turnover ratio this year.
- 30:29Kimber flag like can score, but he can also pass the ball.
- 30:31He plays, he's a he can rebound, he can defend me.
- 30:34He's a he's a beast man. He's fantastic.
- 30:36No, he'll be great. He'll be great.
- 30:39He'll be fun. He'll be fun to watch the NBA
- 30:41too. He's got more space and things
- 30:42like that. He'll be, he'll be, he'll be
- 30:43outstanding. All right, Tobin.
- 30:46So Tobin before you. Get Yes, go ahead.
- 30:48As a coach, when you get a talent like that and you get
- 30:54somebody in that realm. You masturbate.
- 30:57That's what I would do. How do?
- 30:58You like, how do you play like that?
- 31:03Get him to stay grounded and especially the game has changed.
- 31:08Like we, we've talked, how do you get them to stay to
- 31:11understand like this is what we want to get to.
- 31:16We, we don't want to just get to the tournament.
- 31:18We want to win. And how do you do that as a
- 31:21coach? Because, you know, I've been
- 31:24fortunate enough to do a lot of cool things, but I never got to
- 31:29the pinnacle in college. And I got close, but I didn't.
- 31:35And as a coach, and I've never coached at that level.
- 31:39Where do you like, Where is the balance between because they are
- 31:44still student athletes? Yep.
- 31:46But now they're business people. Yep.
- 31:49Like so where do you find that balance?
- 31:52Well, I think first of all, if they're they got to be good
- 31:54people. Like you can tell Cooper fly,
- 31:56he's got good parents, he's been raised well.
- 31:57He's got he's got good people around him.
- 31:59He's had a good coaches. Like, you know what, just even,
- 32:01even you recruit kids, you can tell who's going to stay
- 32:03grounded, who's going to not go out and spend their money and go
- 32:05and do crazy things and, and, and who's going to be like,
- 32:08who's going to get better and work?
- 32:10And like at the end of the day, right, the better the team does,
- 32:13the better you do, right? You know, if you can get
- 32:15yourself, get your team to a final four, it's going to help
- 32:17the team. It's also going to help you too.
- 32:18So more exposure, more, more eyes on you, all that kind of
- 32:23stuff. So I think that we you try to
- 32:25sell, Hey, what's good for the team is also good for you.
- 32:27What's good for you is also good for the team.
- 32:29Hope they have high character. Hope they were raised well by
- 32:31great parents and understand the big picture, you know.
- 32:35But I think where, where does, where do you come in?
- 32:38Because they're with you more than they're with.
- 32:40Them all the time. Yep, My dad was a high school
- 32:43coach. My dad said I'll know your kid
- 32:46better than you will because I see him all the time.
- 32:47I see him every day in in in winning, losing practice, the
- 32:50whole thing. So like, I'm there, I'm there to
- 32:53kind of kick him in the ass where they need it, right?
- 32:56Also to be encouraging to be positive.
- 32:58I think the part about like, you know, being a positive voice in
- 33:01their ear all the time is great, especially with social media and
- 33:04how you get they get knocked down all the time by all these
- 33:06people. So I think just being around and
- 33:08you know, we will, we watch a lot of film, we watch a lot of
- 33:11NBA stuff. We show them, we show them
- 33:12clips, like just being a a person who's there for them
- 33:15anytime they need us. You know, I think a lot of
- 33:19times, you know, to keep them grounded when things are going
- 33:23well is is harder then when they're not doing well and
- 33:28motivating them to do better. You know, you know what I'm
- 33:30saying? It's like.
- 33:31Because you're a parent, I'm assuming.
- 33:34Right. Yeah.
- 33:34My son's actually a sophomore at Alabama, my daughter.
- 33:37My son, my son's a sophomore at Hutchinson playing.
- 33:41So does the parent instincts kick in sometimes?
- 33:45I'm a better coach now that I've had my kids go through high
- 33:48school sports, you know? Trust me, that was awful.
- 33:53Yep, Yep. Well, you got to use, you got to
- 33:55use the goose. You said it's good for you and
- 33:58good for that. It's it's good for the goose.
- 34:00It's good for the gander. The Gander.
- 34:02I like that. I like that saying.
- 34:04That's a. Good.
- 34:04So you so you you as a father, like being coached and I've
- 34:08never coached at your level. I've I've coached travel
- 34:11baseball and whatever. But do you do you think that
- 34:15helps too? Like when you have that
- 34:17understanding, because it's like, hey, I know you're going
- 34:22through some shit and that's OK, and be like, hey, we're here for
- 34:29you and all you got to do is, is just talk to.
- 34:33Me. Because if I don't know, I can't
- 34:36help. You Yep, think back to this job
- 34:39with my son when I coached him and travel ball AU, which is one
- 34:42of the hardest things I ever had to do when he was like in 8th
- 34:44grade and I was trying to coach his team and you know, he
- 34:46wouldn't listen to me the more after a game I was like trying
- 34:51to critique him or try to coach him.
- 34:52That didn't work so much. What you just said is a great
- 34:55point. Let them talk, let them you
- 34:57know, how do you feel? How's things going?
- 34:59What are you, what are you thinking?
- 34:59What are your goals like? And just being kind of there for
- 35:02them as a resource as opposed to tell them all the time what to
- 35:05do and how to do it right. Because sometimes it's too much.
- 35:10It's just too, it's just too much.
- 35:11You know, the too much, too much coaching, too much over
- 35:14overloading them or whatever. So you got to pick and choose
- 35:16the right spots. And listen, I'm not perfect at
- 35:18it. I was not a perfect parent.
- 35:20I drove my son crazy sometimes The best thing my son did, he
- 35:23started running cross country. I'd go to the meats and he was
- 35:25like, run as fast as you can, turn left.
- 35:27That's all you got to do, man. Get back here as fast as you
- 35:29can. Like that's, that's an easy
- 35:30sport to, to, to be. And we know nothing about it, so
- 35:33thank you. I I, I will, I will say this
- 35:36Tobin. And you said what it's job I
- 35:38asked you is like, what do you do when you get a town?
- 35:40Something like that? And I made a joke and I said, I
- 35:42get off, I I masturbate because if I got a player that good, I'm
- 35:46having a I'm having a ball. I'm enjoying myself and just so
- 35:50happy that I landed somebody that great.
- 35:53This guy was the best player in the world coming out of.
- 35:57My flag to South Florida, I'd be I'd be doing pretty well here.
- 36:00I'd be I'd like I'd I might have three pools instead of 1.
- 36:05I will kindly love. The other swap, he love you.
- 36:07Catching it too. Just have me recruit them.
- 36:12I don't know. We got to pick and choose your
- 36:14moments that day, Darrell. I know, I know Errol will love
- 36:17you coaching a Duke right now. I'd be a great coach.
- 36:21Are you kidding me? Me out there having and pumping
- 36:24these kids up. I'm one of those crazy guys.
- 36:27I'm not Danny Hurley crazy. I'm not going to attack somebody
- 36:30or threaten people on a basketball court.
- 36:32But I'm going to tell the guys, listen, we're going to go out
- 36:34there, pretend I'm out there as the 6th man.
- 36:37Pretend I'm just I'm, I'm like an Angel, Angel on your
- 36:40shoulders. Pretend I'm just like riding
- 36:42your shoulders all the way to the hole.
- 36:44OK? Remember that hole, Make sure
- 36:47that hole opens and jam it in. That's what I'd say.
- 36:52At least I'm not in New York. You've got a Jets hat on.
- 36:55Just I'm not in New York. I'm going to do Jets going to be
- 36:57good this year. I'm fine with Duke first.
- 37:00I'm so first. Of all now Tobin, Tobin, Tobin,
- 37:05Tobin, Tobin, Tobin. Now you've done it.
- 37:07Now you've done it, now you've lost yourself.
- 37:10Whatever you're doing over there, whatever you're drinking,
- 37:12keep drinking it. Just don't get too drunk.
- 37:15Nobody said The Jets are winning anything this year.
- 37:18All we know is we got to see if they got the right guy in place.
- 37:22I think they do. I think Aaron Glenn's a good
- 37:25coach. I think he's a Jet.
- 37:27The Jets have never hired somebody that was a part of the
- 37:30organization. So we understand what it takes
- 37:33to bring in somebody that could say, I know what it is to lose.
- 37:37I know what it takes to figure out how to win and be a great
- 37:41player. Aaron Glenn was a good player
- 37:43and he knows how to win, as we've seen with Detroit.
- 37:46And we all know what Bill Parcell said.
- 37:48He's he's one of the greatest. He knows that Aaron Glenn is
- 37:51going to be special. So I understand what you're
- 37:53saying. The fact that you brought up the
- 37:55New York Jets in this conversation makes me sick, OK?
- 37:59It makes me sick as a Jet fan and as a, you know.
- 38:04Yeah, because we usually have to deal with Jets conversation.
- 38:07Never. Never. 90%.
- 38:09Never. We haven't spoken.
- 38:10All we bring up when it comes to it is making jokes about Aaron
- 38:14Rodgers. We do not.
- 38:15We have not spoken about The Jets.
- 38:17We don't talk about it. We have nothing to talk about
- 38:20with The Jets. Why are you bringing them up?
- 38:22Because you're just trying to find a way to stir things up.
- 38:25And if you want to stir me up, it's very simple.
- 38:29I'm not going to sit here and back down from nobody.
- 38:32And as far as the New York Jets are concerned with ownership, by
- 38:35the way, Woody Johnson's trying to buy a soccer team for 200
- 38:38million. Woody, stay away from the soccer
- 38:41team and worry about your God damn football team.
- 38:44Stay the hell away from anything you touch because you're going
- 38:48to make me hurl, all right? I don't want to hear about Woody
- 38:51Johnson and the tabloids. I don't want to hear about James
- 38:54Dolan. I don't want to hear about Chris
- 38:55Jury because he sucks for all your range of fans.
- 38:58I just sit here, hear and laugh every single time we talk about
- 39:01it. You know why?
- 39:02Because we live in this disgrace.
- 39:05We live in a disgraceful state where disgraceful, disgraceful
- 39:10sports. That's all I'm going to say.
- 39:12Let's cut it out. That and we love you.
- 39:15We love you, my friend Tobin, We appreciate you.
- 39:18I hope you guys thank. You very nice, very nice to meet
- 39:22you man. All right, man.
- 39:22Good to see you guys. All right, we'll talk soon.
- 39:25When? Are you going to invite us to a
- 39:26basketball game so we can you come to?
- 39:28Tampa, you come see me. All right, let's do it.
- 39:30Let's do it. You got my number coming to
- 39:32Tampa. Come see.
- 39:32I'd love to have you. Let's do it.
- 39:33Stay at the house. Let's do it.
- 39:35That sounds like a fun time. We'll hang out with Tobin.
- 39:37Just stay, you know, we'll and Jabba, you know we'll sign a
- 39:40couple autographs. And I kind.
- 39:44Of Run Tampa. So we can, we can, we can get it
- 39:46done. You come down, let me know.
- 39:48Just keep guys. Tobin.
- 39:50Just keep him away from your pool.
- 39:51I don't know what he doesn't. Anyways.
- 39:54Tobin. Take care, fellas.
- 39:56Tobin Anderson, ladies and gentlemen, fantastic.
- 39:59Great personality, great head coach.
- 40:01Iona was stupid. I was stupid.
- 40:04They're a stupid organization, stupid school.
- 40:06Keep the guy. Let him grow.
- 40:08This isn't the Knicks. He, I think Tobin.
- 40:11It takes a while to recruit the right guys to put them around in
- 40:15college basketball and put it in a good situation where they're
- 40:18going to succeed. Tobin didn't get enough time to
- 40:21do that, and unfortunately he he didn't.
- 40:25It fell short for him, but I think Tobin's a great coach,
- 40:27he's a great personality and anybody that's never heard him
- 40:30or didn't get a chance to hear the interview, well then shame
- 40:33on you. Watch the replay and bug off, as
- 40:37I always said, as Aaron Rodgers married his hand tonight, as
- 40:40we've learned. And we don't know what Jabba
- 40:42does in his pool. OK, whatever pool he is, he
- 40:45let's keep him away from Jeff because that pissed off.
- 40:49I mean, I don't, I don't, I do pee in the pool.
- 40:51I'm not going to lie. I.
- 40:52Figured Jeff's not going to like that.
- 40:53That's it, that I knew. Chlorine pool, yeah.
- 40:57But I I I check the pH and make sure.
- 40:59It's fine. Emphasis on the pH.
- 41:03Well, that's true. It figures you do something like
- 41:06that, man. I, I'm not going to say I never
- 41:09did it, but I I don't do that where I'm going out of my way
- 41:12and saying, hey, you know what, is anybody watching?
- 41:15I'm going to just piss in the pool.
- 41:16I I mean, that's not something I would do and it's not sanitary.
- 41:20I know tell you, I'll tell you somebody that likes to pee all
- 41:22over things. Tommy scoops over here.
- 41:24Mr. Pooper himself. He he doesn't know how to, you
- 41:28know, he doesn't know how to shoot the rim or, you know, he
- 41:31tries to sink it and dunk it, but it just doesn't dunk right.
- 41:35It hits the IT hits the rim and rubs, if you know what I mean.
- 41:37Speedy, you know how to rub right?
- 41:40Why you rub yours like a genie in a bottle, right?
- 41:42You'd ever done that before? Is he?
- 41:45Is he Christina Aguilera? Oh well, I love that song.
- 41:48I love that song. I mean, is she she's definitely
- 41:51my genie in a bottle. If I got her in a bum and I'll
- 41:53I'll rub her off, you know, I'll rub it off before I rub her off.
- 41:56But anyways, let's go to a call to the.
- 42:03I think. You can throw a strike on this
- 42:05pitch. It's not going to be my John at
- 42:06my arm. Feels like jello right there.
- 42:07Just get it over. The plate I want him to swing.
- 42:09Last time I did. That the guy hit one that hasn't
- 42:11landed yet. For a call to the pen.
- 42:16I like that. All right, guys, a call to the
- 42:19pen. This is our this we're saving
- 42:23where Again. Eat your heart out, Errol.
- 42:25I know you wish that was true, but the drop is.
- 42:28A lot. My rear end is burning.
- 42:31That one might be true. He.
- 42:32Does Grobar have some food? That is Grobar sketch.
- 42:36Grobar, A. Call to the pen is when we go
- 42:42and get some real stories from the history of our professional
- 42:48athletes that are on. Our I need a blow.
- 42:50Job Goody should be joining us later.
- 42:55Sullivan heard back from him. But we're going to talk.
- 42:57He's coaching. You got to you got to give him a
- 42:59chance over here. He's winning.
- 43:00By the way, he is 3 and O as a head coach.
- 43:03I mean, if he. Was a really good coach the game
- 43:04would they'd win the game real quick and it'd be over and he'd
- 43:07be on the show already. I mean, if he was Dodger.
- 43:13All right, let's get serious. A call to the pen.
- 43:16I've always wondered about this because you always hear baseball
- 43:20players have some of the most unique superstitions when
- 43:23compared to really all sports. A lot of athletes are
- 43:25superstitious, you know, may wear like for football.
- 43:29I know like I used to wear like the same shirt under my pads.
- 43:32You know, when I would play every game, like I wanted it to
- 43:34be that shirt. So I made sure I had it ready
- 43:36for every game. That's just a small one that I
- 43:38just like, had a habit of. That's not even really a
- 43:40superstition. I didn't say my.
- 43:42Weiner, I know that we're going to hear some interesting ones
- 43:45tonight. Jabba, tell me about some of
- 43:47yours if you have any. But definitely want to hear
- 43:49about some of the weirdest ones you've ever seen in your days
- 43:52man. It was, it was for me.
- 43:56I I put everything on right side first.
- 44:00So what I always do, and I still do it to this day, I would, when
- 44:05I started, I always ate the same thing.
- 44:08I went to the same restaurant. I remember like when I first got
- 44:12to the big leagues, everybody was telling me about Wade Boggs.
- 44:15Like he ate Fenway, Frank's like he literally got them too thin.
- 44:21And it could be no matter what was going on he always ate them
- 44:28and then you literally could be mid conversation and he would
- 44:34leave you with like I got a hit because he hit at the same time
- 44:38every day and it didn't matter. He ate the same ass, he did
- 44:43everything, everything the same. Everything the same.
- 44:46Don't know he was eating ass at that point, but I.
- 44:49Mean he was too young. Streak alive, you know.
- 44:52Yeah, I mean, he is a Hall of Famer, so.
- 44:55And he's from Omaha, NE, so. Why they eat ass over there?
- 45:01I mean, I'm not going to say I'm not going to say I haven't, not
- 45:08going to say I. Haven't the way dogs really do
- 45:12all the fried chicken stories stuff that you hear in the case
- 45:16races of beer beer? Yeah, don't.
- 45:18Don't ever, don't ever try to drink with that beer that that
- 45:23will not happen. I mean, everybody knows someone
- 45:27from like, I had a friend in College in the fraternity who
- 45:30like could do like, remember what was the show, the man show
- 45:34where they had the guy did the Ziggy, Ziggy, Ziggy Zig and then
- 45:37he would one gulp the, the pint. I had a friend that could do
- 45:40that and it was impressive. But every once in a while you,
- 45:43you know, you put it, you got to put to the test and that that
- 45:47guy always killed all of us. Yeah, and it's like, but for
- 45:50mine, it's like, and seeing guys like CC was crazy too, because I
- 45:58knew him and then got to play with him and he was just the
- 46:01most laid back dude when he would start.
- 46:04And you're like, there's some that aren't.
- 46:06Like when I played with Rodger, it was like you didn't talk to
- 46:10him. AJ Burnett when he came over in
- 46:15O9 with CC, he had this like Buddha head, right?
- 46:20And he would turn it to what his demeanor was that day.
- 46:25OK, So it's like you could see like, OK, he's happy, OK, we can
- 46:29talk to him. He's pissed off.
- 46:31You don't talk to him. And I'm like, all right, well,
- 46:37all right. Like, and I was like, you're
- 46:39learning these things. I'm a 23 year old kid at the
- 46:42time and I'm like, all right, well, learning these things.
- 46:46And I was like, man, there is a lot more than you thought
- 46:50because we're, we're all superstitious in our own way.
- 46:54But when it comes to like sports and, and different things,
- 46:58people do things different ways. And it was like learning those
- 47:01things was completely like boggled my mind because I'm
- 47:07like, oh, all right. They're like, Hey, you can't
- 47:10talk to him if it's turned this way.
- 47:12And I'm like, oh, all right, well, here we go.
- 47:14You mean the cheerful pie everyone in the face guy was had
- 47:18like AJ in the in the locker room where if he turned to the.
- 47:22Left, there was 4 heads, there was 4 heads on it.
- 47:25And it was just kind of the way you did it.
- 47:27And I love AJ. AJ was awesome.
- 47:30He's been great to my family, been great to me.
- 47:33But yeah, he was just a, he was a different, he was a different
- 47:37cat. And it was just like he had that
- 47:41trigger of what he wants. My God wants your pussy cut.
- 47:48Jesus Arrow. Didn't he throw a no hitter with
- 47:50nine walks or something like that when he first came up?
- 47:53Something something crazy like that.
- 47:54That like anyone. Else would have done 88 when he
- 47:56was with the Marlins. 8 Ridiculous it.
- 47:59Was eight. It was.
- 48:00Like a million. People, he still has one of my
- 48:01favorite, favorite ever clips in baseball.
- 48:06Mike Redmond's the catcher who was a manager in the big
- 48:10leagues, and he knocks out the window when the truck is driving
- 48:16by. And Mike Redmond, I like, I'd
- 48:21look at small things, right? Mike Redmond frames the pitch
- 48:26and it's literally in the window and it's one of my favorite
- 48:31clips ever in baseball. Oh, you mean this one right
- 48:34here? OK, a warm up pitch.
- 48:38Coming through. Watch Redmond.
- 48:39He frames it. See.
- 48:44Jesus. Told ya it's pretty.
- 48:47Dumb. That's it's.
- 48:49One of the best ones ever. And then they're cleaning up the
- 48:51glass. It's one of the best ones ever.
- 48:55Look at J, look at AJ is like oops, I'm putting you on a leash
- 49:01now. That's ridiculous.
- 49:07It was perfect, the best, but literally it's like AJ knew what
- 49:10he was doing, but the best is Redmond because they probably
- 49:14already talked about it. I've never had that conversation
- 49:16with AJ, but literally like Redmond, just watching him just
- 49:21frame the pitch like because he knew what was happening.
- 49:24I always wondered what AJ had in his mouth all the time because
- 49:28it looked. Like he always did.
- 49:29Always did. Oh.
- 49:30My. God.
- 49:31Well, I will. I will say, I will say one
- 49:34thing. AJ Burnett, one of my favorite
- 49:38teammates, he literally went to a convenience store and you
- 49:43know, like behind the convenience store you see like
- 49:47the rack of like old school. So this that have been 2009.
- 49:52You can't. Do that now they would never
- 49:54leave the leave the dip open for you to take.
- 49:56It'll be gone within hours. So they would never allow he,
- 50:00he. Bought the rack and bought all
- 50:05of the cans and he put it in his locker and he's like, if you
- 50:09need a dip, get a dip. And he did it.
- 50:13And so I never dipped and he was like, you're from Nebraska.
- 50:16It's. Wonderful when you have money,
- 50:19right guys? It's wonderful, it's wonderful.
- 50:23I'll just buy the whole dip here.
- 50:24I'll just buy all of them. He bought all of them.
- 50:28And that one and that one. All of it.
- 50:31He lived in Bowie, MD, at the time.
- 50:34Bowie, MD. Wonderful.
- 50:36Yeah, still there. Sounds like Swamp Thing.
- 50:38Bowie, MD. And remember that movie Swamp
- 50:42Thing? He told me he goes, yeah, but
- 50:46you'll be fine because that was never a different.
- 50:49Oh somebody they just stored. Cool tie game figures.
- 50:57Oh, wow, Came in a hockey game. Yeah, tie game, came back all
- 51:00the way back. That's pretty great.
- 51:03And so he literally told me he goes, you'll be fine.
- 51:06And I never, I never dipped. I took a dip in the first inning
- 51:11and then after I fished, that was it.
- 51:13I didn't do anything. The only thing I'm dipping, The
- 51:16only thing I'm dipping is the crap that goes in the ball and
- 51:18splashes me in the ass. That's the only thing I'm
- 51:21dipping. Well, let's we, we kind of got
- 51:23off target here a little bit. Let's just finish this up.
- 51:26Errol, how about you? Any superstitions from Hawaii
- 51:29base? I had a lot of superstitions.
- 51:32One, I didn't speak to anybody before the game and I never said
- 51:35anything throughout the game. I actually set up shop.
- 51:40There's a dressing room or the, you know, there's a locker room.
- 51:43I was in the other room. Now, if you heard the story
- 51:46about Billy Smith, before every playoff game, he would hide
- 51:49himself and lock himself in a dark room and if anybody walked
- 51:52through it, he beat the hell out of them.
- 51:53I didn't do anything crazy like that before the game, especially
- 51:57a playoff game or if we're in a tournament, I would go into the
- 52:00other room. I would get dressed.
- 52:02I wouldn't say anything. The only time I would say
- 52:04anything is when the coach is yelling at me about to get on
- 52:08the ice before my first shift and tells me if you don't play
- 52:12hard, you're sitting at the end of this bench.
- 52:15That was the only. And I tell the coach go fuck
- 52:17himself. That's what I tell him.
- 52:18When I got on the bench, that's it.
- 52:20That would be the words that came out of my mouth before I
- 52:23got on the ice. That was it.
- 52:25And he'd laugh at it because he knew what was coming out of my
- 52:27mouth before I would even say it.
- 52:29So he was waiting. For you on line one or what?
- 52:32I wasn't on line one. I'm sorry.
- 52:34What are you talking about? Are you talking about playing
- 52:36hockey? Yeah, I was online, I was
- 52:38either, I was either playing wing, I played defense, I played
- 52:41every position in hockey. I even played goalie in certain
- 52:44aspects of those, you know, certain games if they needed a
- 52:47goalie, I was the second string goaltender that would go.
- 52:50I was better than the starter, but I was better more suited to
- 52:53play, you know, as a starting right wing, left winger, even
- 52:56center. But I was mainly a wing man.
- 52:58I was a right winger and I also was a center.
- 53:01So I I play multiple positions, but I was on the first line all
- 53:05the time. So, but some sometimes if the
- 53:08third line, like let's say we needed like a rough line, we
- 53:11used to call it the rough line. If if one of the guys was not,
- 53:15you know, healthy or something like that, they put me on that
- 53:17rough line because I. Like so did did you play rough
- 53:22light and and power? Play, you know, it's crazy and
- 53:25it's funny that you said that. I, I, you know, during the game
- 53:29I would do like minute and 42nd shifts.
- 53:32An average hockey player could only do between 45 and a minute
- 53:35and 10. I was doing a minute and 45
- 53:38minute and 52nd shifts and I would play like 30 minutes in
- 53:43the game. So I was, I had a tremendous
- 53:47amount of stamina. Now, if I got on the ice, I
- 53:49probably I'll be lucky to do 25 seconds. 30 seconds.
- 53:52It's a, it beats the hell out of your body.
- 53:54People don't realize 30 seconds is like an eternity when you're
- 53:58run, when you're skating up and down the ice.
- 54:00So that was a superstition, another superstition I had.
- 54:04And I never wore my cup, never wore my cup in the playoffs,
- 54:09never did. It didn't matter what position I
- 54:11played. I never because I liked the,
- 54:13the, the air going to my, you know, my trousers.
- 54:17So when I I don't know if anybody knows anything about
- 54:20hockey, so. By the way, it's not trousers,
- 54:22they're Breezers. Yeah, whatever trousers.
- 54:26Anyways. So I if you know anything about
- 54:29hockey, when you put your pads on, you tape them to your leg
- 54:33and then you put the socks on. OK, well, I didn't do that guys.
- 54:36I did something different. I wore 2 sets of socks.
- 54:40I put the socks on under the pads and then I taped them and
- 54:44then I put another pair of socks over them and taped them on top
- 54:47of it. You're asking me why I did that?
- 54:50Because I never liked to wear the hooks that, you know,
- 54:53obviously they were like, what do they call that?
- 54:55Like they were straps that locked.
- 54:59Onto your. Breath.
- 55:00Yeah, onto your breezers. Yeah.
- 55:01So I didn't like to do that. So if I did that, there were too
- 55:05much air going to my trousers where I wasn't wearing a cup.
- 55:09And it would it would like I like to breathe in there.
- 55:13So what I did was during the playoff games, I wouldn't wear
- 55:16the cup. And I'll tell you this, there
- 55:18were some games that I wish I did because people, especially
- 55:22the coach, knew during the game that I wasn't wearing it.
- 55:26And we'd come over there with one of the other guys sticks and
- 55:29hit me over there. He'd go over when I'm not doing
- 55:32something right or I wasn't, you know, skating stronger or
- 55:35whatever the hell. During a power play or a penalty
- 55:38kill, he would take the stick and jab me over there where I
- 55:41wasn't wearing a cup and I would be holding my nuts at the end of
- 55:44the bench. So this was a true story, by the
- 55:46way. And he knew that I was never
- 55:48wearing a cup. And he told me, see, This is why
- 55:50I tell you to wear your freaking Mr. Marks.
- 55:53And he would just tell me. I was like, I'm not Mr. Marks,
- 55:55my father's up there. You can tell him I'm Errol.
- 55:58And he said, I don't give a fuck.
- 55:59Get out there and play your fucking game.
- 56:00That's what he used to tell me all the time.
- 56:02And he's like, if you don't play your game, you're going to be
- 56:04sitting on the bench and you're going to be riding the high.
- 56:06The the what do they call the high honey horse or whatever the
- 56:09hell he called it? Ride the Pines.
- 56:12Yeah, no, he said. Something with a horse, a honey
- 56:14horse or whatever the hell he said.
- 56:17Are you? Riding your high horse.
- 56:18No Hiney horse. You'd be riding the Hiney horse.
- 56:21So anyways, yeah, I'm not going to mention, I'm not going to
- 56:25mention the coach that said that because if he's listening to the
- 56:27show. He's he had a filthy mouth.
- 56:30Apparently, dude, you know what you have.
- 56:32He's probably the worst. Dude, you have no idea what
- 56:35these guys say to you. Yeah, your parents, your father.
- 56:38My father used to love him because my father says he's got
- 56:41a dirtier mouth than I do, and my father had a dirty freaking
- 56:44mouth. So.
- 56:45And my father used to tell me you could curse all you want
- 56:49inside my house. You walk out and you disrespect
- 56:52a parent, I'm going to smack you in the face.
- 56:54So I couldn't curse to anybody. But inside my house to my
- 56:57brothers, my brother and my two sisters and my parents, we had
- 57:01like this connection of cursing and using the F word, you know,
- 57:04speedy and all about it. But you know, so I, I, that's,
- 57:08that's how it is. And my coach, he had the
- 57:10dirtiest freaking mouth, the dirtiest freaking mouth.
- 57:13I mean, you can, you can put soap in his mouth and it still
- 57:15wouldn't be clean. It was horrible.
- 57:17Anyways, that that was probably the two things that I used to do
- 57:21during the playoffs and during tournaments.
- 57:24I wouldn't wear a cup and obviously I wouldn't speak to
- 57:27anybody during the game, but the coach maybe one or two words
- 57:30when I told him to go fuck himself.
- 57:32So and I always did it by the way, all the time when he told
- 57:35me I don't fuck you coach and I get on the ice, I I don't curse
- 57:39on his show, but I'm just telling you I have to I have to
- 57:42be fair here. I'm going to tell you the truth,
- 57:44so. You got to give him credit where
- 57:46credit's due. If he, if he that's what he said
- 57:48to you, you got. To say it.
- 57:49I got to say it. Yeah.
- 57:50So that's pretty much what I said to him.
- 57:52Coach, you know I love you if you listen to the show, if
- 57:55you're, you know, if you remember my dirty mouth, too.
- 57:58So there you go. Well, dirty mouths and well,
- 58:01actually, you know what they. Call me the ladies man and Mr.
- 58:03Still your girl. Well, on that note, I got to ask
- 58:06Mr. Speedy. Breaking News A.
- 58:08Lot of hot, right? Out of this segment, you got any
- 58:12superstition, Speedy? Yeah, play with themselves every
- 58:14single night. Grabs one nut and then grabs the
- 58:17other. Not, not, not habitual, you
- 58:20know, you know, kind of problematic things I'm saying.
- 58:23He doesn't wipe his ass, he uses his right hair, not his left.
- 58:37Does he use a magnifying glass? Well, it gets raunchy down here
- 58:50on a call. I need a magnifying glass.
- 59:00You're crazy, man. I love you.
- 59:04I love you. Were you crazy?
- 59:12I I. Why did I why did I ever sign on
- 59:15but. Anybody that hasn't listened to
- 59:21this show, well, now you have so.
- 59:23You must have been the most fascinating teammate anyone's
- 59:27ever had. Her I was definitely.
- 59:28Feels like like just craziness. You never knew what you're going
- 59:33to get. Like just.
- 59:35Madness. Well, I'm like The Nutcracker,
- 59:38just the nut didn't crack. I can see you being like,
- 59:45remember in like the Mighty Ducks movie, like the second one
- 59:49where he's going back to the the AHL and then he gets injured for
- 59:53life by the dentist Wolf Stanton.
- 59:56You'd be a great dentist Wolf Stanton era.
- 59:58I could see that, you know, just like checking people's Acls in
- 1:00:01half. I wasn't that bad take this.
- 1:00:04I wasn't that bad. I just, I didn't take crap from
- 1:00:08anybody when I was on the ice. Just because I was skinny and I
- 1:00:10was small. I could, I can lay one out and
- 1:00:13lay somebody out and I knew how to hit you.
- 1:00:16I knew how to get. What was your playing weight?
- 1:00:19I was like 1/25, 1:30 when I was in high school.
- 1:00:21Really. OK.
- 1:00:24So you were like just very fast. So things have changed.
- 1:00:27Things have changed. Well, I'm, I'm big.
- 1:00:29I'm a big, a bigger guy. When, when I, when I graduated
- 1:00:32from high school, I, I started hitting more weights, but I was,
- 1:00:36I was caught. I'm when I say I'm like 130
- 1:00:39between 1:25 and 1:35. I was I was in good shape and
- 1:00:44and I was fast lightning, lightning fast.
- 1:00:47And that's why when I was coming full force, you wouldn't see me
- 1:00:49stop. I'd just fly right into you.
- 1:00:51That's how I'd stop hitting you and make sure that you felt it
- 1:00:54every single time I hit you. And and and The funny thing is,
- 1:00:57is I would do it in a way like a figure skater.
- 1:01:01It would be like one of those like pirouettes.
- 1:01:03You know, I can't explain it you I could actually show it if even
- 1:01:08the other day. Well, not the other day.
- 1:01:10A couple couple of months ago I went on the ice on a pond and I
- 1:01:12told you I fell back and hit my head.
- 1:01:14But even my friend when after I got up and I shook it off, I
- 1:01:18skated around and the guy says there was a bunch of guys
- 1:01:21skating around with us. He says how how long did you
- 1:01:24play hockey? I said I play a little hockey a
- 1:01:25long time, just like he's like you, you skate like you did so
- 1:01:29and I haven't been on. I didn't been on.
- 1:01:31I haven't been on the ice for like over a year.
- 1:01:33So you never lose it. It's like riding a bike.
- 1:01:35Anything you do, it's like Jabba throwing a baseball.
- 1:01:38You don't lose something you're so comfortable doing, you know,
- 1:01:42so it, it just becomes an, a second nature to you, you know,
- 1:01:45so you know the technique, you know how to, you know, put it on
- 1:01:50and, and, and how you, how you can shut it off It it's like
- 1:01:53anything. It's like telling Sidney Crosby,
- 1:01:55Hey, you know what, you're too old, but you can't score
- 1:01:58anymore. Sidney Crosby will go and play
- 1:02:00in like a, you know, a men's league right now and put up like
- 1:02:04910 goals and and laugh at you when you said that, you know, so
- 1:02:07you don't lose something that you have.
- 1:02:09You just you lose the, you know, the athletic ability that you
- 1:02:12had as you get older, you just don't have the same ability
- 1:02:16because you get older. So it was a great show.
- 1:02:18Thank you to Jabba at the World Series, the College World
