- Sean Graver: Welcome to Prayer Before Work. I am truly glad that you're here today. And whether this day is starting well or whether you're just ⁓ still trying to wake up, let's take a few minutes and bring this day to God before anything else. Now we're gonna read from Deuteronomy today, chapter eight, verse 17 and 18. You may say to yourself, my power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me, but remember the Lord your God. for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth." Now, Moses is warning the Israelites about a specific danger, not failure, but success. It's the temptation that comes when things are going well. To quietly rewrite the story and make yourself the hero of it, my power, my strength, my hands. And God is saying, remember where the ability came from. Now we've talked about humility before, the kind you need when you're being corrected or overlooked, but there's another kind of humility that's actually harder for most people, I think, and it's the kind you need when things are going well, when the project succeeds or when the numbers are good or when you're in a season of momentum and people are noticing, that's when... the my power and the strength of my hands narrative ⁓ is the most tempting because it's partially true. You did the work, you delivered the results, you got rewarded. But the ability, the opportunity, the timing, the people that helped you, those weren't manufactured, they were given. mean, humility and success, it's not false modesty. It's remembering the full story, ⁓ including the parts that weren't you. Well, let's pray. So God, things are going reasonably well right now and I want to assume all of the credit. I don't want success. I don't want success to quietly grow my pride in ways I don't notice until it's already done damage. So help me to remember today that the ability I'm operating from You know, the mind, the skills, the opportunities, the people in my corner, this all came from you. My hands didn't produce this alone. So keep me humble in the good seasons. Help me avoid false modesty. I don't want to dismiss what's real, but I do want to remain genuinely aware that you are the source of everything that I'm stewarding. So I thank you for this season. Help me not to waste it by forgetting. where it all came from. In Jesus' name, amen. Now go make today count.
