- 0:30Hello, welcome back to the Easy Double podcast.
- 0:33I'm very excited to be sat here at the start of episode 31 with
- 0:37my two usual Co hosts Dean Menzies.
- 0:41How are you late record on a Sunday evening?
- 0:44Good mate, sort of back from holiday so they now had a nice
- 0:48relaxing weekend of all week of of athletics.
- 0:52It's been good. How are you?
- 0:55Yeah, good. Thanks mate.
- 0:56Slightly, slightly tired given the the late star and a couple
- 0:59of beers last night, but I think the the adrenaline and the
- 1:02excitement to talk about Tokyo is going to get me through.
- 1:05And how are you Owen? Just back from an airport run we
- 1:08believe. Yeah, so.
- 1:10The flight was meant to come in a half nine this morning, which
- 1:13I was like Grant, but for some reason cyber criminals attack
- 1:18Dublin Airport. So like the whole Terminal 2 had
- 1:22to be evacuated and everything was delayed.
- 1:24So yeah, the flight I was picking actually my coach up
- 1:27from it was 3 1/2 hours late. So thank you for sticking with
- 1:31me and not starting without me because yeah, so many good races
- 1:35to unpack. No, it's, it's important that
- 1:37we've got you on board because I'm sure, yeah, you're itching
- 1:39to call every gold medalist and throw some accusations their way
- 1:44that. Wouldn't be me.
- 1:46So we've just been chatting offline and genuinely Dean has
- 1:50withheld the results of the medal competition from myself
- 1:53and Alan so far. And we agreed that he would
- 1:56reveal all live on air. And we he he's been posting a
- 2:00few updates in the clubhouse throughout the week to kind of
- 2:03keep people updated. So thanks for that because he's
- 2:06even colour coordinated the gold, silver and bronze
- 2:08positions and it was incredibly tight, wasn't it?
- 2:12So do you want to tell us what's been happening, Dean?
- 2:14Quick one, just for everyone. The clubhouse, like you can
- 2:17access it through an app on the App Store.
- 2:20Like you don't have to go through the Chrome link every
- 2:22single time. It is a physical app, so you can
- 2:25install a circle and then just, yeah, follow the instructions.
- 2:29So you don't need to keep on going through Chrome.
- 2:30There's an actual app for it. Yeah, whether or not that that's
- 2:33a good or a bad thing, because then you get the the message
- 2:35notifications every time and you you start increasing your screen
- 2:39time. But it's been good this week.
- 2:41I've enjoyed that. Well, yeah, I suppose just for
- 2:44for anyone in that wants to know how we finished.
- 2:47So the way the point system worked is it was 2 points if you
- 2:51correctly guessed the person. So it was gold, silver and
- 2:55bronze, or first, second, third. If you guess the right person in
- 2:58that particular order. Like when Yonhi you picked him
- 3:03to win gold in the 8, you'll get 2 points.
- 3:05If you just picked him for silver, you'll get one point
- 3:07because he picked him for a medal.
- 3:10So in terms of our competition, I was just out of us three.
- 3:17I was third in with 16 points when you were second with 19
- 3:23points and Ryan, you were the winner in with 21 points out of
- 3:30us and that was good enough for for you were just one point off
- 3:36being equal first overall Ryan. So 22 points was the total.
- 3:42But in terms of tie back, tie Breakers with the women's
- 3:45marathon time, it's actually put you in 5th overall.
- 3:49So pretty solid result. Obviously shout out to Owen
- 3:55given that half your I think Ireland won a silver and hit
- 3:59Teflon which wasn't part of our competition but other than that
- 4:03I don't think there was an Irish medalist but they were in about
- 4:065 year picks so that's pretty impressive.
- 4:08Just for a clarity, yeah, that was Ireland's first track medal
- 4:13in 30 years and only seventh ever medal out of World
- 4:17Championships. So to put it into context.
- 4:21Oh. Well, and look.
- 4:24And Despite that, you still picked that many Irish people in
- 4:27your team. Faith we didn't do too bad.
- 4:35Well, no, and we'll probably get on to that as we go through the
- 4:37results, but I did notice how hot and humid it was in Tokyo
- 4:41and I did just think how well prepared everyone was coming
- 4:44from Ireland into Tokyo. We were blessed, yeah, but that
- 4:48heat wave we got really just prepared all of the guys.
- 4:51So look, it worked. So the Aussies didn't do too
- 4:55well and you just complain? That's warm.
- 5:01So we're in terms of moving on to the overall winners, I
- 5:04thought special mention to Dan Yaxley because he was one point
- 5:08off the win but would have won with the closest to pin in terms
- 5:14of the women's marathon time. So pretty unlucky there on 21
- 5:17points along with Ryan. But third place was Liam Stocky
- 5:23on 22 points. Oh, sorry, 2nd place was Liam
- 5:30Stocky on on 22 points. I, I've, I've messed up the
- 5:38order here, but Anna Helliwitz, Helliwitz was third in with also
- 5:46on 22 points and just 10 seconds.
- 5:49No, that's why I've got it right.
- 5:51OK, I shouldn't have doubted myself.
- 5:56I've just on the fly seen a lower time and a higher time and
- 5:59realised I've got it wrong. But no.
- 6:00And I'll share these results with the clubhouse to make sure
- 6:04that everyone can actually see what I'm doing is correct.
- 6:08Because it's fair that everyone guessed faster times than what
- 6:10the women's marathon ran. And so the furthest away was
- 6:14Liam. He guessed so everyone, everyone
- 6:17got 22 points. Wow, let's let's slow down.
- 6:22Let me slow down. It was a complicated system, and
- 6:27when you're counting on tiebreakers, it made it a lot
- 6:29more complicated. Anyway, all three people got 22
- 6:33points. The person that was furthest
- 6:35away from guessing the women's marathon time was Lamb.
- 6:38Well done, Lamb. 10 seconds closer to the pin was Anna, and
- 6:44then our winner was Dan Wayne, who was yeah, also on 22 points
- 6:51but nearest to pin with the Mirror Winnings marathon time.
- 6:55Shit, good job that we put the tiebreaker in, otherwise I hope
- 6:59we wouldn't have been buying 3 pairs of shoes.
- 7:01Well, I would have been trying to find the way not to anyway.
- 7:03We would have been shopping around for some sort of three
- 7:06for one, but but yeah, so good competition, pretty close the
- 7:11whole way. I think there was a few people
- 7:13that, yeah, jumped out to an early lead, but it was sort of
- 7:17competitive the whole way. So actually in terms of, you
- 7:20know, I found it a fun way of sort of following the events.
- 7:25So. Yeah.
- 7:26So no, thanks for everyone that participated.
- 7:29Yeah, quite close. Like, you know, looking through
- 7:33the results, I think 30th was on say 17 points, you know, So for
- 7:37for context, it's sort of, you know, only a couple of picks
- 7:40away from being on the podium. Yeah.
- 7:42Now, congratulations and we'll be in touch to arrange the prize
- 7:46of a pair of assets, meta speed and your preference of at your
- 7:52sky subject to whether we can get our hands on them, which I'm
- 7:56sure we'll be able to. So yeah, well done.
- 7:58And the free prize draw for just entering in general for the
- 8:01nutrition, we'll just sort that out offline and then publish the
- 8:05results as well. Well, yeah, I agree.
- 8:08It was a fun way to follow it because it kind of forces you to
- 8:11obviously choose where your predictions lie.
- 8:14And then as you see the results come in, you can kind of see
- 8:18whether they're upsets or not because obviously you've kind of
- 8:20called where you think the winners will come from.
- 8:23And I think that was kind of the the key trend, wasn't it?
- 8:26There was so many like upsets and shock results.
- 8:30Yeah. And doesn't it change quickly?
- 8:32Like, I think I had yeah, Cobb to win the 5K and you sort of
- 8:36knew after his heat of the 1500 that that was probably not a
- 8:40great pick. And then after Jimmy Gracia
- 8:44caused an upset in the 10K and you realize like that races were
- 8:48going to be potentially more tactical rather than just from,
- 8:51you know, someone going gun to tape that maybe kickers had a
- 8:55bit of a bit of a better chance at the likes of Camellia or even
- 8:59Gressia in the 5K all of a sudden became much more popular
- 9:03picks, which some of these people like they weren't even in
- 9:06our shortlists because you just they just weren't even on the
- 9:09radar either by way of their world rank or their season's
- 9:12best. They just weren't that look
- 9:13looking likely. So yeah, it was just a fun, fun
- 9:18way to follow the follow the competition.
- 9:20And I think some there's some useful feedback around next time
- 9:23if we just and that's what I thought.
- 9:25Just an observation from World Athletics, was they included
- 9:30like season's best or they included whenever someone popped
- 9:33up on a start list, their world rank and it sort of just
- 9:37contextualized all the athletes. Like it sort of gave some good
- 9:39insight as you're watching a final as to sort of anyone with
- 9:43a single digit number. You're sort of like, oh, well,
- 9:45they've obviously been racing really consistently.
- 9:47And then you see some people that have got these pretty high
- 9:50world ranks that are sort of coming from the clouds a bit,
- 9:52which was good. Yeah.
- 9:53And then we'll get into it properly when we get to Tokyo.
- 9:56But there's a couple of other results that have been knocking
- 9:59around this weekend that we we want to knockout first.
- 10:01So in terms of how this episode's going to look, we've
- 10:05got a hell of a lot of time spent on the World Championships
- 10:09once we get to it. Prior to that, we've got the
- 10:12Berlin Marathon, we've got city to Bay.
- 10:15And I did just want to give a quick mention and I know we
- 10:18shouldn't be, well, I feel like we shouldn't be doing like these
- 10:21little personal shout outs. However, it is somewhat relevant
- 10:24in the the XCR season in Melbourne wrapped up this
- 10:28weekend and the club that I ran for whilst I was over there,
- 10:32ironically called Victorian Cross Country League, got
- 10:36promoted from Dev 2 to Dev One for the first time.
- 10:40So I'm still actually in the group chat and on I think it was
- 10:43yesterday Saturday morning, one of them sent like a big rally
- 10:46and cry message like gearing them all off and firing them up
- 10:50ready to go for a big promotion push on the last day.
- 10:54And it did give me a bit of FOMO, to be fair.
- 10:56Like that kind of like team environment and like culture of
- 11:00everyone running for each other. It's kind of like what we miss
- 11:03out on over here. But I just don't think we've got
- 11:06that depth, do we? I sadly not.
- 11:07Would be nice though, wouldn't it, if we could on Earth?
- 11:11Something like that. Have to get a FIFO contract in
- 11:14place with one of the clubs, right?
- 11:20Then let's go into it. So City to Bay happened this
- 11:23morning in Adelaide and that was one on the men's side by Adam
- 11:28Goddard in a blistering 34 O 6. So when I tried to do like the
- 11:33conversion for this in terms of like what he would have went
- 11:35through 10K and I think it's coming out of 2825, which is
- 11:40because that's a 12K race sanely fast.
- 11:43And it must have had to been because he's beaten Isaac Kane
- 11:47and we've kind of seen over the past couple of months he's been
- 11:49in like really good form. And then what was also
- 11:54interesting in terms of contacts for the WA Perf listeners, Dan
- 11:57Kanala, who's obviously one of the best runners, distance
- 12:00runners in Perth, finished 15th. So just goes to show the depth
- 12:04there in that race. And that was backed up by Izzy.
- 12:08Izzy back Doyle winning the female race in 3654.
- 12:12So she won by two minutes to Bronzy Oates.
- 12:15And again, like we've seen that Bronzy Oates has been in like
- 12:18red hot form. So for Izzy to put 2 minutes
- 12:21into her like she doesn't stop, does she literally just come off
- 12:2410K in Tokyo, flew home for the first time in four months and
- 12:28straight into a race? Yeah, like the emotional toll
- 12:32that should take on Izzy to even just like the world's the build
- 12:36up to that, then running, then flying home and then to just
- 12:40like win the city debate, which is like pretty good race.
- 12:44And like, Bronte Alt is on fire at the moment.
- 12:46Like, she's a phenomenal athlete.
- 12:48With 30th birthday celebrations in the middle of it all, I'm
- 12:51sure as well. But yeah, what a way to welcome
- 12:53yourself home to Adelaide. Is there good prize money on
- 12:56that one? No idea.
- 12:57You know, it's from those cities to Bay ones.
- 12:58So maybe a little bit, but it wouldn't be like a big chunk, I
- 13:02don't think. It's not like Perth where you
- 13:04have to pay like a $70 entry free and you get absolutely
- 13:06nothing. It couldn't be, couldn't be that
- 13:10good. Berlin Marathon was also this
- 13:13morning. So we were following a couple of
- 13:16people over there and we were aware that the weather was kind
- 13:21of far from optimal in that it was looking at maybe like low
- 13:2420° on the start line and getting up to like 2324
- 13:28throughout the race. So like, we were taxed in this
- 13:31afternoon and I said, like, personally, I'd be gutted if
- 13:34you'd put in months of preparation and like you get to
- 13:38race day. And there's a unsurprising.
- 13:42So in terms of the elite results, Sebastian Sawaway won
- 13:46in two hours, 2 minutes and 16 seconds from a Japanese guy,
- 13:51Akira Akasaki, and it's always won by 4 minutes.
- 13:55The 2nd place is around 2:06. And then there was an Ethiopian
- 14:00in 3rd for the women. It was a Kenyan athlete as well.
- 14:04So can you get in the double? I don't know if you guys saw any
- 14:06of the strain, but like how to end based on that, based on the
- 14:10results in the men's and women's, it looks like they
- 14:12spent most of their budget on maybe the pacemakers for SAR Way
- 14:18because he had what, 5 pacemakers I think start?
- 14:21And so given that seconds, what, 4 minutes behind him, I don't
- 14:24know. The field doesn't seem to bat
- 14:26that deep, does it? I actually didn't see the
- 14:27stream. So you, you mean that maybe like
- 14:30they've literally set the race up for SAR way and that's it?
- 14:33I think so because like they went through, he went through
- 14:36halfway and I think 60 minutes and 16 seconds or thereabouts.
- 14:40So he's like a 2 minute positive split.
- 14:43And I think he started with five pacemakers and it might have
- 14:46been down to three by halfway. Like you need a pacemaker that
- 14:49can run 60 minutes flat for 1/2 marathon, which I think maybe
- 14:55two or three, maybe 2 Aussies ever have done that, you know,
- 14:58on their best day, let alone on a slightly warm day.
- 15:03So yeah, I don't know, just just just crazy.
- 15:07I mean, it's no, no surprise that there was him in daylight,
- 15:11but it's, you know, a little bit lacking depth, I think.
- 15:17So there's two ways to look at his result.
- 15:19I think it's that like he's run 202 in unfavorable conditions.
- 15:26So then potentially the people who haven't run to their
- 15:29potential, he kind of disproves that.
- 15:32But then there's the way of looking at it in that he's
- 15:35ranked 2O2 in these conditions. And does that mean that
- 15:38potentially on like an optimal day with the rank, dare I say,
- 15:42159 or like at least a world record?
- 15:45And I think it's more so the latter rather than the former,
- 15:48because like, facts are facts, and the weather effects you in
- 15:51the way that it does. So it's scary, really.
- 15:54Yeah, now it's sort of building it up a bit.
- 15:56So they obviously thought he was in some pretty rippy shape.
- 15:58And I think the commentators maybe mentioned that his
- 16:01previous marathons he'd run a negative split.
- 16:03Like he ran away from everyone at London and I think he
- 16:06negative split a tour 2IN Valencia.
- 16:08So like I think he's I think he's a tour too.
- 16:10So I think he's like, I think he's pretty well suited to the
- 16:16marathon. He was his third or fourth
- 16:18marathon, but I think he's pretty good at him so.
- 16:21Yeah. So I made an observation here
- 16:23saying is he the best marathoner in the world right now?
- 16:26Because he's won Valencia, London and Berlin since last
- 16:31December. So he's won those three in 12
- 16:33months, which are like, you get the best of the best there.
- 16:37Not is it Simbu bit brutal that we're calling him the best
- 16:44marathoner in the world after after one of the best marathon
- 16:49finishes of all time for the Tanzanian earlier in the week.
- 16:52But yeah, probably, possibly. And this is some of the
- 16:55commentary about the world champs was just that what do
- 16:58they get? I think they get, is it €70,000
- 17:01if you win a World Championship gold versus. 7070 thousand
- 17:07American dollars. Yeah and but you what it like I
- 17:11think there was rumoured that Kipchoki got like $1,000,000
- 17:14appearance fee at Sydney. Like what sort of money are
- 17:16these guys getting? What's our way getting to go and
- 17:20race to Berlin? I would say it's an well in
- 17:22excess of of winning gold at the world champs And and part of
- 17:29that would just be in rocking up or or running.
- 17:31So he, you know, it's not like you have to beat everyone.
- 17:33But yeah, it's probably him or isn't.
- 17:35Didn't, didn't I hear as well. There's a guy at Chicago going
- 17:38for a world record attempt as well, coming up later in the
- 17:42next month or so. Yeah, that career fella, did he?
- 17:45I think he won Boston earlier this year.
- 17:49So yeah, that'll be interesting to see how it gets on there
- 17:51because this was later on in the agenda, so you might as well
- 17:55talk about it now. In Clayton's post race
- 17:57interview, I don't know if you've seen this, but he said
- 18:00he's going to be in the lead car commentating on Chicago.
- 18:04So where Manse is attempting to run the American record.
- 18:08You know, the way they cut to the car sometimes and they've
- 18:10got like someone there kind of talking about how the race
- 18:13unfolds, Clayton Young is going to be in that car and doing like
- 18:17the analysis and commentary on one John Korea's world record
- 18:21attempt and to Connor Manses American record attempt.
- 18:27So like we often criticize the streams and say that they don't
- 18:30spend enough time like watching the race.
- 18:32So if they've gone out of the way to get Clayton Young in the
- 18:34car, you'd hope that they're going to pay him the respect and
- 18:38give him like, good airtime because his insights will be
- 18:41crazy there. And there'll obviously be two
- 18:43different pace groups, like Connor Mansell have his own pace
- 18:46group probably would he because he's going to be like 4 minutes
- 18:48off the winner if they're going for world record pace and.
- 18:53You'd think so, yeah. Unless he's fancy in his cheeky
- 18:57world record whilst he's out. Would have passed them.
- 19:00On that result from. Probably get into it in the
- 19:03men's marathon results, but did you guys have any thoughts about
- 19:07if Connor Manse was in that race?
- 19:08Yeah. My initial thought was he would
- 19:10have meddled. However, on some analysis into
- 19:13Simbu, I seen that he actually beat Months.
- 19:17I can't remember what race it was.
- 19:18I think it was Boston maybe earlier this year.
- 19:21You know, when like Months was in that group, there was like 4
- 19:25or five of them coming into the last K and he ended up finishing
- 19:28like 4th or 5th. Simbu was one of the round ones
- 19:32who finished higher than him there.
- 19:33So it made me reconsider. Like it obviously would have
- 19:37been a medal chance but I think it's a bit ignorant to just be
- 19:40like our man's were the 1. I like Ike in a different world.
- 19:44I can see Connor man's just taking it from the front and
- 19:47just trying to like nail the guys into the ground and then
- 19:49blowing up hard like you don't know what I'm.
- 19:53Yeah, the way they're almost like gathering themselves
- 19:56heading towards the stadium and like basically waiting for like
- 19:59a last four 500 meter race. There's no chance months would
- 20:03be letting that happen. Would they would have been
- 20:05nailing it the last like 3 or 4K?
- 20:09On that, finishing in the stadium is like top tier.
- 20:13They should do that with our marathons.
- 20:14It's so cool, yeah. It should be how they have to
- 20:16finish, but he had a major championship.
- 20:19Yeah. Yeah, because there's there was
- 20:21chatter about like getting rid of the marathon at World Champs
- 20:23and stuff, but literally doing that is the way that you keep
- 20:26it, to have it finished in the stadium and have it as part of
- 20:29like the morning session. Because I don't know about use,
- 20:33but when you look at the agendas from my bias point of view, the
- 20:36morning session usually isn't as exciting as the evening session.
- 20:40But if the marathon was going to finish inside the stadium, then
- 20:43that would incentivize me to look at wanting to go to a
- 20:46morning session. Yeah, and I just think a hot
- 20:48marathon as well just throws up all these permutations.
- 20:51It's the same reason why we'll get into it with the World
- 20:54Champs recaps. But when you remove like the a
- 21:00lot of drama and excitement in sport comes from when it's a bit
- 21:05less predictable and running sometimes LAX is too
- 21:09predictable. And when you add in some of
- 21:11these variables like hate, it just means that you're not quite
- 21:16sure what might happen later in those races and just make some
- 21:18really exciting to watch. So because it's the guys aren't
- 21:21really CER certain how to manage their effort and therefore
- 21:24people are sort of sitting in a group and and working out who
- 21:27wants to go 1st and someone might want to roll the dice.
- 21:30And it nearly worked saying the women's marathon and it just
- 21:34makes for exciting viewing. So like a yeah, hot summer
- 21:38marathon in the summer, summer world champs, Summer Olympics I
- 21:40think has a place I would have thought.
- 21:42Yeah, I noticed some of the chatter pre world champs was
- 21:45like complaining that our world champs are always in like
- 21:50August, September, so the marathon's always going to be
- 21:53like half and like that's not fair on the athletes, blah,
- 21:55blah. But as we've just seen, like it
- 21:57makes for really exciting races. And yeah, I'm, I'm all for it.
- 22:02So just to round off those bare limb results then that was the
- 22:05subway ran the ninth fastest time ever there in those
- 22:09disgusting conditions. The woman who won, Rosemary
- 22:13Wanjiru, she won in 221 O 5 by 3 seconds from an Ethiopian.
- 22:18Lady D Radida, 221 O 8 and another Ethiopian rounded off
- 22:23the podium in 2/21/29. So this Rosemary Wanjiru, her
- 22:29name didn't mean all that much to me, but when I've looked into
- 22:33it, she's actually ranked #10 all time.
- 22:36So she's not by no means a nobody.
- 22:39She's run 216 before she won Tokyo in 2023.
- 22:43She was second there last year and 5th there this year.
- 22:47So yeah, the depth amongst these marathoners is madness.
- 22:52So many of them it's hard to keep up with, really.
- 22:55Was it not known that it was going to be warm this weekend?
- 22:58It was 9 from about a week or so out.
- 23:00Yeah, yeah. Like, I just like people really
- 23:07the weather is an excuse. But when someone runs 202, like
- 23:12I know he's like an anomaly and he's like just batter.
- 23:15But like everyone's doing heat training these days.
- 23:19Like if it was 36° like 20° in front of it's warm but it's not
- 23:24boiling and. Yeah, I think it's probably just
- 23:27a little bit optimal. You probably have to adjust your
- 23:29paces slightly like, I don't know, 3-4 seconds, OK, maybe.
- 23:37And you know, like he was maybe 2 minutes off what he wanted to
- 23:42go through in and you extrapolate that out, maybe it's
- 23:443 minutes off for some people, 4 minutes off what they would want
- 23:47to do if they. And so you just have to maybe be
- 23:50prepared for that if that's what you, yeah, you should be known.
- 23:55Was the women's 1A Sprint finish.
- 23:57There's only two seconds. There's 3 seconds in it.
- 23:59Yeah, yeah, With the heat thing, like you could, if you're
- 24:03ignorant to it and you just stick with your paces that like
- 24:06your goal was in optimal conditions, you could go through
- 24:09halfway probably pretty easily on that pace thinking, OK, it's
- 24:14not affected me. But then all of a sudden once it
- 24:16hits you like it's game over, you're going to lose 5-10
- 24:18minutes pretty quickly. So I'm sure they'll they'll be a
- 24:22few people there who've had tough second halves.
- 24:25But yeah, I think 2:02 in that is pretty remarkable.
- 24:29I'll be quick to jump into the Strava comments and say the
- 24:32winner around 2O2, so you've got no excuse.
- 24:35In doing so you are removing heat as an excuse or and I was
- 24:41ever for yourself so be careful. Sure, we've all had.
- 24:45Everyone's used to the heat. Like Ireland is now getting so
- 24:48warm, everyone in Europe is getting so warm.
- 24:51Like there's no excuses. He's back in a jump, right?
- 24:55He's forgotten. All right then, so let's get
- 24:59into Tokyo World Championships. In last week's episode, we
- 25:03managed to cover off the women's marathon and the women's 10K,
- 25:07which had happened prior to our recording.
- 25:09So the first race that is relevant to this episode was the
- 25:15men's 10K happened last Sunday evening.
- 25:18It was 30° despite. Dare I mention the weather.
- 25:23I feel like it might be relevant despite I think it started
- 25:28around like half nine or something, maybe even later
- 25:30local time, 68% humidity. So in terms of how the race
- 25:36panned out, it was very slow. Like they literally ran the
- 25:40first K in 360 and I think, which is like the women went
- 25:44through the 1st K quicker than that over 15 minutes through the
- 25:485K splits, which like is fast for 99% of the population.
- 25:55But like these guys are the best of the best and that's literally
- 25:58jogging for them. But then you can see that like
- 26:01as soon as the pace goes on, people just can't handle that
- 26:04change of gear. And usually when you're looking
- 26:07at people's faces to try and see kind of who's hair and or who's
- 26:11comfortable, like they're all kind of straining.
- 26:15But it was at Omgrun to go to the front 1st and kind of start
- 26:19to wind it up. He actually wore a cap.
- 26:22He was the only one to have a cap on for about 4K or
- 26:24something. And then he just chucked it and
- 26:27I seen in his interview afterwards or somewhere that it
- 26:30was he had ice in like a little zipper through the middle.
- 26:34Was that his coach's idea that to wear the cap with us or Mr.
- 26:39Donnelly? How's his form?
- 26:41What's up with that actually? Had to know that I was literally
- 26:46so Ryan and I this after we recorded last Sunday, we went
- 26:51and watched a football match, an APL match.
- 26:54And on the way home, I'm listening to the Let's Run guys
- 26:59recap that they do like a daily recap on each night of
- 27:02athletics. And they're talking about our
- 27:06mag, our Magrins coach, and they're quoting Jordan Donnelly
- 27:10and they're going on about hit like the coaching insights.
- 27:14And I'm like, wait, what are you talking about?
- 27:17And then I jumped on Instagram and there's photos of like, like
- 27:21Jordan with like in all Swedish gear.
- 27:23And like, it was like a meme. Like it was like ridiculous.
- 27:27I don't I don't understand it. Well, remember when we watched,
- 27:31I got the stream up, didn't I? And I was like, shit, that was
- 27:34the cameras. Just come to Jordan.
- 27:36He's still there in the crowd in his Sweden calf.
- 27:39But yeah, I'm not sure what the connection is.
- 27:40He's not. I don't think he's the coach,
- 27:42but he's that he obviously was just like kind of part of the
- 27:44camp because he did have on his story a few weeks ago, like
- 27:48videos of arm grown on the treadmill and stuff.
- 27:50So he's obviously somewhat part of the team.
- 27:55But yeah, funny nonetheless. I did actually say to him you're
- 27:59you're like Jose Mourinho of running the master taxation.
- 28:04I think. I think he was just not Yeah,
- 28:10this is as Dean would say, spent all the bikies in the 10K.
- 28:13It seems worth it. Yeah, it's come away with a
- 28:17medal like I guess that would have been the goal.
- 28:19Obviously 2 medals would have been like unreal, but it's kind
- 28:23of like a breakthrough run nonetheless to get a medal on
- 28:26the world stage like that, isn't it?
- 28:28So yeah, he was the first to kind of go to the front and put
- 28:30something into it and they all went with him.
- 28:34And I always think it's funny the way you can see them when
- 28:36the camera's on them, but you see their eyes glance into the
- 28:39screen because they're kind of trying to see what's happening
- 28:42behind them. But I don't know, like sometimes
- 28:44I think is that a sign of like weakness a little bit?
- 28:47Because they're they're not kind of just focused solely on the
- 28:50race. But anyway, I think it was about
- 28:55two minutes, 58 pace through AK. So still like well within their
- 29:00range capability. And because of this, it meant
- 29:03that literally everyone was still there with a lap to go
- 29:07when they hit the bell. So like just incredibly exciting
- 29:11to kind of see it unfold like that 1520 people within the 10K
- 29:15race with just 400 to go. Usually people have made a big
- 29:19move and the field separated by like 10 seconds, 15 seconds,
- 29:23whatever it may be. And then Kajalcha makes a
- 29:27massive move, I think down the back street.
- 29:29Almgren, Fisher, Young, Gracia, Kip, Karui, Berraga, they're all
- 29:34still there. And then kind of somehow as
- 29:37they've rounded that last bend into the 100 meters, it's like
- 29:42Almgren, Kajalcha, maybe Fisher, but he might have just been
- 29:46starting to fade and another guy on the outside somewhere.
- 29:49And you just see kind of like Gracie almost appear from
- 29:53nowhere. And then in similar fashion to
- 29:57Cole Hocker in his 1500 meter semi, but obviously a lot
- 30:01cleaner. He just like wove a way through
- 30:05and he's managed to just time his kick to perfection and that
- 30:08he's literally done it on the line.
- 30:10And as with most of them, to be fair, but his reaction is like
- 30:14in complete disbelief. It's just unreal to see, isn't
- 30:17it? So there was a final K of 226
- 30:21and the last 400 and a 54. This.
- 30:24This is what I didn't get though.
- 30:25Like going into the the 5K today, they're talking about
- 30:31Gressier wanting it to be slow so he can use his kick and
- 30:34stuff, which obviously he's had the best kick in the 10K.
- 30:39But you're comparing Jimmy Gracia's kick to call Hawker's
- 30:43kick. Like it was, I think it was.
- 30:45We'll talk about it when we get to the 5K.
- 30:47But it was just so overlooked and like almost call Hawker
- 30:51wasn't respected in that way that he's like one of the best
- 30:54finishes in the 1500. But yeah, Jimmy managed to get
- 30:57the gold here. So that meant that Kajalchi was
- 30:59a close 2nd and Armgren was also a close third.
- 31:02I think it's like a little bit like relative, isn't it?
- 31:05Like so Jimmy Gracia won the was it the was it the Diamond League
- 31:11finale? Was it the Zurich Diamond League
- 31:143K that he won? And so like they did like it's
- 31:17rather than a 5K in the final, they did a 3K, which is I think
- 31:21just to pack it into the agenda. But like he's got serious, but
- 31:25he was racing against all of the main a lot of the main
- 31:29protagonists in the coming up in the five and 10K, but that are
- 31:35traditional 510K runners. And so like, I think his kick
- 31:38relative to a lot of that like to to a lot of the more
- 31:43endurance guys is very good. But then like you say compared
- 31:46to then, but then in that fifth in the 5K that we'll talk about
- 31:50in a bit, there was genuine like sub 330 guys that he's running
- 31:54against, which he's going to going to struggle against.
- 31:58And then even you saw that again with like maybe guys that are
- 32:01more like 815 hundred guys in the slower 1500 sort of doing
- 32:08relatively well where it's a sit and kick.
- 32:11Yeah. And I think the bookies maybe,
- 32:12maybe maybe made those mistakes. I mean, we were sort of loosely
- 32:15following some of the market markets just to get a bit of an
- 32:19idea on who's who's to watch and who people are thinking.
- 32:22But like once you started to see in these races where there was
- 32:26no clear favour, I felt like in the women's races, the, the race
- 32:31was very different because there was clear favourites.
- 32:33They sort of tactically knew how to run the races to sort of
- 32:37maximize their chances of winning.
- 32:38Because if you're, if you're obviously better than someone
- 32:42else, then it it sort of makes sense for you to sort of dictate
- 32:45tempo to try and improve your chances of racing to run the
- 32:47race that best suits you. Whereas in these other races,
- 32:50like no one wanted to take that race on.
- 32:53And I would have thought that I mean, how many Ethiopians were
- 32:56in the 10 KS? I mean, at least three, maybe 4
- 32:59if they did some team running. Kajolja probably wins that
- 33:02because Gressier is not there if it's fast from the gun like but
- 33:07they just weren't prepared to do that.
- 33:09And so it just made it just made the racing so exciting because
- 33:12it brought these guys. I think Gressier was literally
- 33:15right up to that race was paying 50 to 1.
- 33:17And so like, and he's probably only relevant if it turns into
- 33:22more of a 3K type race where he's got wheels over those guys.
- 33:26So yeah, I don't know. I, I found this, the, the
- 33:29tactics and the strategy that that particularly in the men's
- 33:33races, which were more open, which meant that a lot of men
- 33:36weren't prepared to take initiative because it didn't
- 33:39maximize their chance of winning.
- 33:40Just really good to watch. And that that's apparent even
- 33:44for those endurance guys like, say, Fisher, he's known as being
- 33:47like one of the fittest in the world.
- 33:49And he can run these when it's like time trial in the Diamond
- 33:53League. He can run these insanely fast
- 33:55times and beat the majority of the field because they just
- 33:57physically can't run that fast for that long.
- 34:00But even in one of his interviews afterwards, he's
- 34:02like, yeah, to go on the front and start driving the pace is
- 34:07just would have been suicide. Like, I know that's my strength,
- 34:09but I just that would have been suicide for my race.
- 34:12So he was able to stay in it by staying in it.
- 34:16But then when it comes down to it just it can't compete with
- 34:19those guys who can close so hard.
- 34:22Yeah, and it's interesting. I mean, I mean, we're jumping
- 34:25between races, but like in that 5K race, I'm pretty sure it's
- 34:28Nico Young and Grant Fisher. That sort of took a lot of
- 34:31initiative that made that into a 30 minute race, which is a lot
- 34:35faster tempo than what the 10K was.
- 34:40But it just burns. It just burns extra matches.
- 34:42And they sort of know they're not, they're not good enough to,
- 34:45to, to, to burn those matches, to spend those biggies without,
- 34:50you know, shooting themselves in the foot really.
- 34:52So which is just good. It just makes for an exciting
- 34:55sort of like racing matter. It's like they know that they
- 34:59should they know that their chances of winning a diminishing
- 35:02whilst they sit in there, but they know it will cost them if
- 35:05they go to the front. And then the sitting kick guys
- 35:08are like, taste it, you, you, you're just setting it up for
- 35:11me. So how would you race against
- 35:14your one Chiba? So she has arguably the best
- 35:181500 runner all time just sitting on her and she still
- 35:21have kicks her. Yeah, I, I don't know.
- 35:24I so, yeah, not my idea, but something I listened, listened
- 35:29to was there was sort of suggesting that like maybe a
- 35:32sustained drive. So I think Chibet's one, I think
- 35:36she's like now 22 between her and Faith Kippy Aegon and like
- 35:40but like over that 5K if she turns it into because like if
- 35:45it's a four lap burner, I reckon Faith Kippy, Aegon maybe still
- 35:49beats Chibet. Like Chibet raced 1500 earlier
- 35:53in the year and ran 354 maybe, but it certainly wasn't 348.
- 35:59So it wasn't like so, so I think her best.
- 36:02So I think Kippy Aegon's best chances, rather than leaving it
- 36:05to a fast 400 or 200 is to to go from 4 laps out and just try and
- 36:11grind. And 1st, it's the fatigue
- 36:13resistance that Kippy Aegon's got by being like a mala that
- 36:16maybe increases her chance of beating her.
- 36:18Because I I'm pretty sure she bets winning all these races
- 36:21like those sitting, sitting kicks is.
- 36:23Yeah, I think you're playing into to her advantage, which is
- 36:26silly. Yeah, I know, I know.
- 36:28I don't get it either. But I think, but I think there's
- 36:30something to do with like I the fact that she's 6 seconds faster
- 36:35over over 1500. I think maybe if you're just
- 36:38doing some sort of sustained Dr. I mean, it clearly didn't work
- 36:41doing a sitting kick. And which would have more impact
- 36:45on your body, the 10K or the three rounds of 1500?
- 36:50Given that the 10K was like so slow like my my guessing is
- 36:54maybe because the 10K was so slow versus 3 hard rounds of
- 36:581500 that maybe the 10K was maybe easier.
- 37:01You wouldn't normally think that but do you remember 27th Mo
- 37:04Farah 2017? I'm pretty sure that was the
- 37:06first time he got beaten in either A5 or 10K and it
- 37:09California, it was in the 5K and it came off the back of someone.
- 37:13So one of the East African, I was either Uganda, Uganda or
- 37:16Ethiopia absolutely like took it to him in the 10K and he ran so
- 37:20hard to win gold in the 10K and then he came back in the 5K and
- 37:23he was cooked. Yeah.
- 37:24So I, I, whereas I reckon if you're just sitting and jogging
- 37:27and then just running at 2:38 last K like the women did in
- 37:30that 10K, that maybe that's easier to recover.
- 37:33From a 5K10K double is so hard. Did you see your man Almagrin?
- 37:39Like he is just known for being incredibly fit and he couldn't
- 37:43back it up like in the heat and the 5K so.
- 37:46But Gracie, yeah, I mean, but. Gracie backed it up, Yeah.
- 37:49It depends how you recover, I suppose.
- 37:51I think that that's one of the themes isn't it, from the whole
- 37:53champs. Like over the past maybe five
- 37:56years people have been just getting fit and trying to enable
- 37:59themselves to run fast. Whereas these championships just
- 38:02show that you there is still a massive need to be able to one
- 38:06race tactically and to be able to like finish strong and
- 38:09actually be fast. Which, off the back of some of
- 38:12our recent interviews, don't you it.
- 38:16And this coupled with these races just makes you want to get
- 38:20a Sprint coach go and do some Sprint training.
- 38:22Yes. Have you, have you made any
- 38:24inroads with that? Me.
- 38:27Yeah. Well, I won't need it for the
- 38:29cross country season, but we'll see early next year what will
- 38:32happen. Jimmy Gracie, he, he sort of
- 38:36rose to fame with some of his victories in a cross country, so
- 38:39maybe that's where it all starts.
- 38:42He's got some range as well, like he runs a sub sixty half.
- 38:46It's just crazy. And that's what I was thinking,
- 38:48like when these commentators are talking about like Gressier's
- 38:51kick and his finish and like, he wants it to be slow and stuff
- 38:54and you're like, he's around 59 minutes for 1/2 marathon.
- 38:57Like this guy's fit as anything. He's not just like a closer.
- 39:02You do remember when he was in some of those diamond leagues
- 39:04earlier in the year, like when they were run at 12:45 pace, he
- 39:08was running what he was like 510 seconds behind them.
- 39:11Like he wasn't keeping up with the a heap of guy that Al
- 39:16Magron, Fisher, Niko Young, Kajelcha, Gabriel Wet.
- 39:20They were all running like mid 1240s and he was like 10 seconds
- 39:23behind with him and a couple of other French dudes when they're
- 39:27under 13 minutes. I mean, hard to kind of put a
- 39:30number on it, but then they've just run what they're seeing
- 39:33flat there and in that heat. Would that be 12:45-ish?
- 39:38Yeah, I didn't expect him to still be there.
- 39:40So yeah. And that was pretty.
- 39:42And after like you say, a hard 10K.
- 39:44However, let's round off this 10K and we can move on formally.
- 39:49So it was the slowest 10K in a world final for the men by 54
- 39:54seconds, which just kind of underscores everything that
- 39:58we've just been saying there. USA finishing 5th, 9th and 11th
- 40:03after having like. Realistic chances at medals, if
- 40:07not winning like it's it's a bit surprising really, but that's
- 40:12just when it comes down to a finish.
- 40:14It's almost a bit of a lustry like that, isn't it?
- 40:16You can see that there's like more Europeans and Americans in
- 40:20the other front now that half of Kenya is on that doping banned
- 40:23list. Isn't that right?
- 40:24Don't know. Yeah.
- 40:26I mean, what it's been good I think is normally like rewind
- 40:30what 5-7 years ago and it would be three countries sort of in
- 40:35the in the front group and then like Europeans N Americans like
- 40:40in a second group or to their own or or getting run out of it
- 40:43with a lap or two to go. So it was so cool saying like a
- 40:47full like in improper international race.
- 40:49I thought it was really good. And where and your one well Taji
- 40:53who got caught like her Ethiopian organization, we're
- 40:58going to let her go only for it was like WADA.
- 41:02And so that's why Ethiopia hasn't gotten many shot because
- 41:07they arranges like, yeah, go ahead, we don't mind.
- 41:10It's not that bad. It's a joke.
- 41:14It stinks a bit, doesn't it? And it kind of paints can you're
- 41:17in a different light now. It's like, oh, you're the good
- 41:19guys because you're actually catching them all.
- 41:22It's you're always like, I know you're grand.
- 41:25Doesn't matter if you miss a few.
- 41:26Yeah, and The Ethiopians were quite prevalent throughout these
- 41:29results in general as well, weren't they?
- 41:31But I mean, they always are. But still, like, it's, it's
- 41:33really not a good luck for the federation like, is it?
- 41:36So the next race was the men's marathon on Monday morning,
- 41:40which Dean's going to tell us about.
- 41:41Yeah, I think like the the commentator sort of summed it
- 41:46up. Oh, so I suppose in terms of
- 41:48setting the same, not to to talk too much in terms of weather,
- 41:52but it was reasonably hot, not as humid I think as what the
- 41:55women's race was, but it still was that sort of 26 to 28°.
- 41:59So yeah, still pretty uncomfortable.
- 42:05Is a high percentage humidity bad?
- 42:08Yeah. So the way it's 68 or 50 between
- 42:1068 and 54, like if it was 90, that would be really, really
- 42:14bad. Yes, exactly.
- 42:17Yeah, Yeah. The higher the percentage of
- 42:19humidity, the, the worse, the worse that it is.
- 42:23And I think as it gets more humid, the issue is your sweat
- 42:27doesn't evaporate. So you you sweat, your body
- 42:30produces sweat to cool itself. And then if it's not very humid,
- 42:33you'll feel that cooling effect quite quickly.
- 42:35So like in a dry heat, you'll feel your body sort of cool off
- 42:39with the sweat. Whereas when it's humid, it's
- 42:40sort of like cakes on you. And you see in some of those
- 42:43races like in Doha and stuff like even when they grab like,
- 42:46oh, they may have been Tokyo, but some of the strategies, and
- 42:49I remember, I think Salpeta maybe did it in, in Doha.
- 42:54Like you can see them grabbing like towels to sort of because
- 42:56if the sweat sort of caking on you.
- 42:57I think that was like a bit of a strategy to try and help your
- 43:00body call itself. But yeah, I think the race was
- 43:09it was, it wasn't. They didn't dawdle through
- 43:12through halfway. So they went through halfway in
- 43:14around 65 minutes, which in that weather it was not was not slow
- 43:20and I think there was already sort of people sort of starting
- 43:24to tail off, but there was still pretty pretty sizeable pack
- 43:29through halfway. And that included like a lot of
- 43:34a whole cast of athletes. It included who we who I had the
- 43:39privilege of chatting to Cam Levin so I could see him.
- 43:42He's sort of he's quite tall and so you could see him sitting at
- 43:45the back of his pack. I think cap on and Sonny's on at
- 43:50the back of the pack sort of on in that two sort of 210 pace
- 43:54cycling through his strings. Clayton Young was in there,
- 43:57although around halfway he Clayton Young is hit the deck,
- 44:02bounced up pretty quickly. But it's an interesting one.
- 44:07And I don't know, Ryan, if you've ever experienced this,
- 44:10but you know, in a marathon, so, so a lot of what you're doing is
- 44:14basically trying to distribute. I mean, in a lot of races,
- 44:17you're just trying to distribute your effort as evenly as
- 44:19possible. But you, you'll want to in a
- 44:22marathon, not spark your heart rate particularly early and
- 44:24you're just trying to stay relaxed.
- 44:26But you'll notice, as you particularly say after the 1st
- 44:301015 KS, you have to be very careful in terms of avoiding any
- 44:35sort of surges. But let's say if you just you go
- 44:38to get your drink bottle and then that pack, that pack is
- 44:41like, it's like that imaginary line, you know, in the pool when
- 44:43you're like at the swimming world champs and you just see
- 44:45the, that imaginary line just drifting away from you, the
- 44:48world record line sort of thing. That's what it can be like when
- 44:51you sort of just switch off mentally or go to get a drink
- 44:55bottle or do something. And that, that invisible line
- 44:58that that that lead group that you're with just starts to
- 45:01separate away from you a little bit.
- 45:02And it's sometimes hard to sort of claw back.
- 45:05And so Clinton Young fell over, and it probably only cost him, I
- 45:08don't know, 5 to 10 seconds. But you sort of need to find
- 45:11those 5 to 10 seconds. And when it's travelling at 3
- 45:14minutes per kilometer, how do you get those 5 to 10 seconds
- 45:17back quickly? I think the fall is much more
- 45:20impact than just losing like a few seconds while you're on the
- 45:23ground. Like I think your body nearly
- 45:25goes into shock like he tense or there just be abdominal effect
- 45:31that would like. Yeah, the adrenaline spark that
- 45:34comes with it, all that sort of stuff.
- 45:36And it's sort of just, it's really not at a good time.
- 45:38I think if that happens just before you're about to sort of
- 45:42kick down, then, you know, maybe it's not too badly timed, but
- 45:46it's sort of it's just sort of never ideal to have that sort of
- 45:49thing. And I think Clan Young reflected
- 45:52on it in his in a post race interview, because I think he's
- 45:55just was trying to downplay it because he's like, I'm not here
- 45:58to make excuses, but he was hoping to be a bit closer up and
- 46:00those sorts of things when you're just trying to stay as
- 46:03chilly as you can for as long as you can.
- 46:04It's just not a wasn't an ideal thing for him to have happen.
- 46:08I don't think. I mean, you see it on the track.
- 46:11I mean, we'll talk about the men's staple chase, like, but
- 46:15like Mo Farah, I remember went down and won of his races,
- 46:17bounced in an Olympics, I think bounced back up and won.
- 46:20Like you can get up and get up quickly.
- 46:22But like, yeah, I don't think it was wasn't ideal.
- 46:25And I just know that feeling of when that group sort of just
- 46:28trying to slowly float away from you and you then you're just
- 46:30trying to overreach to get back on.
- 46:32And as soon as you start overreaching, it's very hard.
- 46:34Like you've just over committed and you're just on borrowed
- 46:36time, which yeah, I suppose it wasn't until maybe, I don't
- 46:44know, maybe 35 KS that people started to to started press on a
- 46:48bit in the marathon and gap started to appear.
- 46:51I think it whittled down to maybe 10 or so runners a bit and
- 46:56a real cast of sort of similar to the 10K.
- 46:58It wasn't just E Africans at the front.
- 47:02Yeah, some of the some of the favorites were some of the first
- 47:05ones to go, weren't they? The Galata and Tequila is it?
- 47:11Can't even remember but it was the ones we bloody picked
- 47:13anyway. I remember my medal.
- 47:15This is at that point I stopped looking at my medal chances
- 47:18because yeah, I would go into my Google sheet to find find these
- 47:22names to try and remember who I'd picked.
- 47:24But as soon as you saw Kenya and Ethiopia and Uganda all falling
- 47:29away, you realize that your picks weren't in there.
- 47:31I certainly didn't have the likes of like even is it
- 47:34Chalanga alarm? I like there was Israeli
- 47:38athletes. I think there was 2 Israeli
- 47:39athletes and two Italian athletes in that, you know, when
- 47:42it whittled down to that final 10.
- 47:45And I remember thinking, God, I didn't, I didn't have any of
- 47:47them in my, in my black book, that's for sure.
- 47:52And then, yeah, probably got to around 40 KS and they were
- 47:55basically really strung out. And then it finished inside the
- 48:01Tokyo Stadium and it was sort of, I think probably what, half
- 48:05a bit over half filled because they had morning athletics on,
- 48:08which was a, which is a clever way to do it.
- 48:10It just added to the atmosphere. And Felix Simbu and Emmanuel
- 48:16Petras were both entering the stadium side by side.
- 48:21And Petros is was quite is quite a rangey dude.
- 48:24Hey. And he was sort of trying to
- 48:27German athlete and he was trying to drop Simbu and sort of semi
- 48:30did, but he just didn't have much of A kick on him.
- 48:33Like it didn't look it looked a bit like a baby gazelle, like it
- 48:36just didn't look that smooth. And Simbu, who was like
- 48:40expressionless, just basically sat in there and then, yeah,
- 48:43just had the wheels and was just never really looked out of it.
- 48:46He sort of just never got put away and literally got him right
- 48:49on the line. And yeah, they were awarded I
- 48:54think the same time, but but you could sort of say it was went
- 48:59down to the set thousandth of a second, but you could sort of
- 49:01felt like Simba had A and he was awarded the goal.
- 49:04Yeah, it looked like he he almost gave up when Petros put
- 49:07that little kick in and got maybe like 5 meters even.
- 49:10Wasn't it coming at at like in the last 100 meters?
- 49:13And then he's obviously just like a fleeting thought.
- 49:15He's been like, no, like, you're not empty.
- 49:18Just like, give it what you've got.
- 49:20And like, he's seen the panic almost in Petros as well, once
- 49:25he realized he was coming back for him.
- 49:27Didn't, Yeah. Yeah, I think for a moment there
- 49:30he's probably thought he's got gold.
- 49:31And then yeah, he he realized no game on still through.
- 49:35They both threw everything at it was just a really good finish to
- 49:38a fun, fun race. I mean, obviously we would would
- 49:41have liked the likes of Cam or Clen Young or one of those guys
- 49:44to be out there mixing it. But it was still really good.
- 49:46Like, you know, all the different a heap of different
- 49:49countries represented Tanzania, Germany, Italy, Israel, Uganda,
- 49:55a trial in the US, all in the top ten.
- 49:56It was just it was a good race and sort of I mean, what no
- 50:01Ethiopian, Kenyans in the top 10.
- 50:04So yeah, it was it was just good race and sort of, as we spoke
- 50:08about before, a good reason why like these hot marathons are
- 50:12make for an exciting event at the World Champs.
- 50:16Yeah, I was getting excited, like maybe, maybe a male dropped
- 50:20off at like 37 or something. So maybe like 3536 when Cam
- 50:26Levin still there, Clayton Young still there and the male crash
- 50:28still there. I was like, shit, this is good.
- 50:32But yeah, for it to finish that way, it's like, it was on Monday
- 50:36morning, wasn't it? So I went the toilet to watch
- 50:39like the last five minutes or something, and I just was sat on
- 50:42the toilet, like jaw on the floor, like, Oh my God, you
- 50:45never see a marathon finish like that.
- 50:48Yeah, it was a cool finish, I think.
- 50:51Yeah, Well, obviously, I mean, it's as close as it gets.
- 50:53So yeah, that was pretty good. I seen that Simbu had a quote
- 50:58from his interview and he said I just stayed with the group.
- 51:02Like that was my plan, like be in the group but don't be
- 51:05prevalent. I mean, I'm literally putting
- 51:07words in his mouth. But his quote was I just stayed
- 51:10with the group and that's kind of shown by his positioning.
- 51:14So AT20K, obviously the group is massive, so they've kind of all
- 51:19gone through together, but he was placed 30th, so showing that
- 51:23he's at the back of the group. AT30K he's 17th, so that's
- 51:29either he's moved slightly forwards in the group or there's
- 51:32probably a few people who've dropped off and stuff by then.
- 51:35And then by 40K he's 5th. So you can see that with just
- 51:41two K to go, he's in 5th place and like he's literally just
- 51:45timed it to perfection and let everyone else do all the work
- 51:49for him. Did you see that he made his
- 51:51where he made his his debut? No, no.
- 51:55He made his marathon debut on the Gold Coast in 2014.
- 51:59There you go. Yeah, so someone from the Gold
- 52:04Coast social media team must have been getting a little bonus
- 52:07for digging that one out because they posted it in the week.
- 52:10It's cool. So I also seen that he was fifth
- 52:14in the Rio 2016 Olympics. In 2017 worlds, he got a bronze
- 52:20medal in London. In 2019 worlds he was 16th.
- 52:24In 2022 COM Games he was second. But obviously the field in the
- 52:29Com games is a little bit diluted.
- 52:32He DNF the last World champs. He was 17th at the Paris
- 52:35Olympics and he was ranked 11th in the the road to Tokyo amongst
- 52:40like kind of the field, I guess. So yeah, he's, he's had a
- 52:45massive breakthrough run. And he also said that he got an
- 52:49invitation, he's had an invitation to run New York later
- 52:52this year on the back of that. So he might find himself cashing
- 52:56a decent payday there, which rightly so fair play to him.
- 53:00I was also noting the number of DNFS.
- 53:03Well, I thought afterwards, I want to see.
- 53:05So 66 people finished and 22 DNF, which is like quite a high
- 53:11percentage really. Yeah, I get it, though, because
- 53:14you can really dig yourself a bad hole if you finish a
- 53:18marathon and you're absolutely gone, whereas a lot of these
- 53:21guys will back up for Valencia. Like that's exactly what Chris
- 53:25is thinking. Like 100%.
- 53:27Oh, it didn't. They know the weather before
- 53:28they started. For yeah, they're just soft.
- 53:34I mean, we'll get to this when we get to the 1500, but I would
- 53:37sooner see a meal if we if he drops off the pack and he's not
- 53:42going to like be competitive at 37 K and he's got 5K to go As
- 53:46soon as see him jog it in or he's not jogging but end up
- 53:51running to 14 or something and finished then Josh Kerr continue
- 53:56to bloody limp around the track and run 411.
- 53:59I respect that from car though I don't know why like finished the
- 54:02race. Well, to be honest, it probably
- 54:04don't care about because, well, it's a season over and but yeah,
- 54:09I don't know. I don't like seeing people drop
- 54:10out. It's like giving up.
- 54:11Like Laros in the five Ki mean. I just felt bad for him though
- 54:16was a little bit sad because obviously I had all these
- 54:19expectations going into it and then he's just obviously
- 54:22literally physically and mentally given up and just sat
- 54:25on the sidelines. Like 4 bit of weight of
- 54:28expectation got to him. Grow a pair.
- 54:32Like come on, give your whole future idea.
- 54:35Just use it as a learning experience.
- 54:36Don't cry and sit down. Get up.
- 54:40Yeah, I'm so I'm sort of with Ryan as well, reluctantly, but
- 54:45like I I felt for Larros like because I get coming to his
- 54:49parents and some of the commentary and like, you know,
- 54:51his parents are off as he's getting overtaken in the 1500.
- 54:55He's gonna have a mayor in the 5K.
- 54:57Like it's like I felt for him. And then Cara was like, what are
- 55:01you doing? Like you're clearly like
- 55:03something's wrong. Like you quit, you're lame.
- 55:05And so like does it, like, I get it.
- 55:08If you, if you're attending the World Championships and your
- 55:11goal is to participate, then I think you would just you, you
- 55:15want to finish no matter what. And I think there's some honor
- 55:18in just making it, limping to the finish line, particularly in
- 55:20the marathon or in any event. But yeah, if you're human,
- 55:24you're risking an injury and you're, you're, you're a full
- 55:27time professional, like you're, you'll, you'll be at the next
- 55:30World championships. I don't know if it was your last
- 55:33one, I'd get it, but I didn't get, I didn't understand what
- 55:35was going through his head to like he kept trying to search to
- 55:39get back in. We'll probably get to it, but I
- 55:41don't know. It didn't make a lot of sense.
- 55:42To round off those marathon results, I think come ended up
- 55:45come Lemons finished 12th. Owens countryman Peter Lynch
- 55:49finished in 24th in 240 in, which is pretty good result
- 55:54really. Yeah, he'd be happy with that.
- 55:59Like 24th in the world. It's pretty good and like when
- 56:02your national record is 209 like he like it was warm apparently
- 56:10like to be 5 minutes off your best yes not too bad.
- 56:12Yeah, like, and all the notable finishes.
- 56:15And Tim Vincent was 44th and 2:20.
- 56:19And Sandra Moen of Norway, we know he's a 205 guy.
- 56:22He finished 49th in 221 with a 66 first half split and a 75
- 56:29second-half split. That's doing it tough.
- 56:31The next final, I think in chronological order was the
- 56:34women's 1500 meters. So to summarise the heat, Aaron
- 56:38Wallace and Laura Muir of Team GB didn't make it out the heat,
- 56:44Laura Nicholson of Ireland didn't make it out the heat,
- 56:47neither did Sarah Billings of Australia.
- 56:50As we got to the semis, Linden Hall, Sophie O'Sullivan and Reve
- 56:54Walcott Nolan then dropped out. So in terms of the final, how it
- 56:59actually panned out, Kippie had gone straight to the front.
- 57:02Hall, I don't know if you noticed this.
- 57:04I thought it was just a bit odd to look at like she went so wide
- 57:09to kind of get herself round everyone and up onto Faith's
- 57:12shoulder. But you could kind of see then
- 57:15that that was her tactic. Like she wasn't trying to finish
- 57:18second here. She was trying to give her
- 57:20everything she had and see what that meant.
- 57:23So then that meant that as they got to 200 to go, Jess was still
- 57:28with Kippy Aegon at that point, and they'd almost got a couple
- 57:32of meters into the Kenyan athletes behind them.
- 57:34And you're thinking, shit, Jess is racing for gold here.
- 57:39And then within like 20 meters, Kippy Aegon puts her foot down.
- 57:42It's like, Oh my God, race over straight away.
- 57:44Like the way she pulls away and extends is just like, especially
- 57:49when you then see Jess Hall go on to run 157 in the 800.
- 57:53And when you see what Kippy Aegon's done to her there, it's
- 57:55like, Jesus Christ. So then as it was, Jess's
- 58:00clinging on to her bronze medals.
- 58:02She got passed by Dorcas Awoi, who is a young Kenyan athlete.
- 58:07I think she might be like 19 or 20.
- 58:09And then you're thinking, shit, it's almost going to be a repeat
- 58:12of the Zurich Diamond League as Nelly chapter chair is striding
- 58:16towards her. But she's just and like you see
- 58:19Jesse stride shortening and shortening.
- 58:21But she's just held on to get the bronze medal, which I think
- 58:25is still a fantastic results because you've got like Nikki
- 58:29Hills down in fifth. Hey, Lou.
- 58:32And I think it's great courage from Jess to kind of race for
- 58:36the win when she could have just settled for silver.
- 58:39And yeah, she's hard to go put herself out there.
- 58:43And Sarah Healy's top ten in the world, she's finished 10th.
- 58:46So that's fantastic result from her because I can't remember
- 58:49which round it was, but I think she's pretty close to getting
- 58:52through. She actually didn't qualify over
- 58:55the semi, she came 7th but an Italian girl got DQ D so she got
- 59:03D cured and then Healy was next in so she was lucky to get into
- 59:07the final. But yeah, top ten in the world
- 59:09for play. And I think if you look back at
- 59:11like the season she's had, she probably deserves it.
- 59:14Like she's she's had some really good results here and there,
- 59:17hasn't she? Perhaps earlier on, but it's
- 59:20good. I think, yeah, like I think if
- 59:23she ran less, she could have done better.
- 59:25Like she don't a crazy amount of races throughout the whole year.
- 59:29Like she's been at such a high level, like you can only keep it
- 59:31up for so long. So I think in a different world,
- 59:35if she runs like half the races she did and she could even come
- 59:39in fresher and finish better. Well, she's part of that M11,
- 59:44isn't she? And you think obviously they
- 59:45must have like great contacts in terms of getting them into
- 59:48races. So she's probably just cashed in
- 59:50on it. Like it's almost like she she
- 59:53would have to choose not to race and be actively turning down
- 59:56these opportunities, whereas other people are like kind of
- 59:59trying to find them. But yeah, good result for her in
- 1:00:03terms of Kippy Aegon and the winner, she's that was a four
- 1:00:061500 meter world title. She's also got a 5000 world
- 1:00:10title to go with that. So five of them, 3 Olympic
- 1:00:14Games. This is just disgusting when you
- 1:00:17click into her honours on World Athletics.
- 1:00:20It kind of separate out separates out between like
- 1:00:22Olympics, world champs, Diamond League.
- 1:00:25So the Diamond League races are all in a big massive list.
- 1:00:29She's had 35 races and won them all.
- 1:00:32It's absurd. We should never lost a Diamond
- 1:00:36League. Wow.
- 1:00:37Maybe, maybe this is a lie because I've, I think I've
- 1:00:40clicked into the honours so it showed all the ones that she's
- 1:00:43won. So maybe she has lost a few, but
- 1:00:46she's at least 135. What age is she?
- 1:00:48Is she getting on? Well, she must be with three
- 1:00:50Olympic Games and like her head to her marathon.
- 1:00:56She's washed. Or when she back goes to the
- 1:01:00marathon or something like that. That's crazy.
- 1:01:02Just think of will she even make it that far?
- 1:01:04She probably that rich that she'll just cash in after a
- 1:01:07track career with all that breaking for shit.
- 1:01:09Like she probably got a couple of million from that.
- 1:01:12And when you look back on that now, it's almost like, don't
- 1:01:16know. I haven't thought about it since
- 1:01:18and it does just seem like a proper exhibition thing almost
- 1:01:22forgotten about. But she obviously still would
- 1:01:24have got paid a lot for it. She's 31.
- 1:01:28We still better life in the dog yet.
- 1:01:30She's got a short marathon career I had there.
- 1:01:32If you're her agents, you're taking her to the roads.
- 1:01:34Yeah, I would. She'd clean up.
- 1:01:37I'll be careful, you might be getting some doping accusations
- 1:01:40thrown your way if you were her agent.
- 1:01:43Whoa, we never mentioned doping, only the people that get caught.
- 1:01:49All right, then men's 1500 meters was the next final.
- 1:01:52So I think we covered off the heats in last week's episode
- 1:01:55because there was some notable absentees there.
- 1:01:59And in terms of the semis, we then lost Ethan Strand, who the
- 1:02:03Americans were raving about going into this.
- 1:02:06And I think he was quoted in saying like, yeah, that heat was
- 1:02:10so hard. And if you you're probably not
- 1:02:13interested to look back, but if you noticed at the time, he
- 1:02:16didn't look too comfortable. So yeah, he's only young, Big
- 1:02:20learning experience for him. Then Nordas went out too, and he
- 1:02:24kind of looked the opposite. He looked great in his heath, so
- 1:02:26that was a bit of a shocker. Speaking of a shocker, brings us
- 1:02:32on to call Hawker because he was DQ in his semi for Jocelyn.
- 1:02:38Yeah, I think that is so harsh. Like Farrakhan was going
- 1:02:42backwards. Hawker, he lit.
- 1:02:44Hawker just literally slipped by him.
- 1:02:46I thought it was so harsh. It's like VAR in it.
- 1:02:50They've they've gone to the rule book and applied it.
- 1:02:54Yeah. Fucking pushed if I can pushed
- 1:02:57him. Farkin Chase got through which
- 1:03:05the Steve Cram and stuff. We're calling them Tashita.
- 1:03:09I think is is the actual pronunciation.
- 1:03:12I just wanted to stay away from. Speaking of, I see.
- 1:03:17Here, Speaking of Farrakhan, shite the Aussies.
- 1:03:25Yeah, none of them made them made it through.
- 1:03:27Did they made it out of the heights?
- 1:03:31But I think did we do we speak about this or maybe it's just in
- 1:03:35my mind, but they they sort of were ranked.
- 1:03:37What were they ranked outside the top 16 Any Oh, no, top what
- 1:03:42is it top 12 go through to the final.
- 1:03:44And so 24. I mean, now around they're all
- 1:03:47ranked within 21 to 30 or three of them.
- 1:03:52Yeah, I put that work. I think that just ran to what
- 1:03:56they had wasn't enough. And we lost Elliott Giles and
- 1:03:59Kyle Doyle. So from our nation's Kostra and
- 1:04:03Neil Gurley, Josh Kerr and Whiteman advance to the final
- 1:04:08SO. You can tell a lot about the
- 1:04:11training groups like Cal Doyle and Giles trained together like
- 1:04:18Jude, Sarah L them MTC guys like I'd say a lot of them would have
- 1:04:24been disappointed with the way they run.
- 1:04:26Andrew cost grin and Hannah not all she done very damn to done
- 1:04:30very well. You can see which training
- 1:04:31groups sort of got it right. The on training group, which
- 1:04:35maybe got knocked a little bit at Paris because they'd and
- 1:04:40prior so prior to Paris, when were they on fire?
- 1:04:44Was it 2022 Olly Hall won com games.
- 1:04:47There was some you know, they would they would do Beamish.
- 1:04:51I don't I don't know that was they were doing well then
- 1:04:53they've been hot and cold, but that will probably what pretty
- 1:04:56hot again, at least for the guys that were racing.
- 1:04:58I mean, Beamish to win gold and Kai Robinson forth, that's
- 1:05:03pretty good return from from those guys.
- 1:05:06Yeah, good turn off besides Mills, but like there's
- 1:05:10different types of on groups Europe in America And so how the
- 1:05:14race panned out. It was weird because Josh Kerr
- 1:05:17went like usually he'll go to the front or at least like be
- 1:05:21prominent. And he like he ran like so
- 1:05:25aggressively towards the rail. It was like he was a magnet to
- 1:05:28it, wasn't it? He was like sock straight into
- 1:05:30the rail because he must have had a bit of a wide draw.
- 1:05:33And Larros went to the front, but he didn't go to the front
- 1:05:37with any pace. He just went to the front to
- 1:05:39kind of like be there and almost slowed it down once he got
- 1:05:42there. And then Whiteman appears on
- 1:05:45Larros's shoulder and talking about like racing instinct and
- 1:05:50stuff. Like you feel like Whiteman's
- 1:05:52just got that, hasn't he? Like a lot of people kind of
- 1:05:54struggle with these tactics and like placement, getting boxed in
- 1:05:57and being at the back and stuff. But Whiteman I think kind of
- 1:06:01like just naturally compared to like football, soccer people are
- 1:06:06like, just like natural finishes and stuff.
- 1:06:08Whiteman is that like natural racer.
- 1:06:12And then Timothy Chariot kind of pops up and joins Laros at the
- 1:06:15front and talking to training groups.
- 1:06:18These two train together. Is it the the old Polish 800m
- 1:06:23runner, Levandowski? He's actually their coach, which
- 1:06:26is quite bizarre. But you're looking at them too
- 1:06:30when they get to the front and thinking, shit, there's going to
- 1:06:32be some some teamwork here. Maybe Chariot, the old dog, he's
- 1:06:37going to sacrifice himself and run Laros to the finish.
- 1:06:41But it didn't quite happen. So the first 400 was 59.5 which
- 1:06:46is like incredibly slow 800. I think they split in like 2
- 1:06:50flats, which is literally jogging.
- 1:06:53And then around just before 900, that's when Josh Cares had this
- 1:06:58bit of a mishap and at first, like, it looked like he got
- 1:07:02shot, didn't it is like out of nowhere, something is just
- 1:07:06pinged and he's like stepped on the infield a few times and then
- 1:07:09dropped off and like, tried to reattach himself.
- 1:07:13It was a bizarre one because he coming back up that back
- 1:07:17straight to like towards the bell.
- 1:07:19He almost did reattach himself. And then he was like completely
- 1:07:24gone. Well, yeah.
- 1:07:27And it has no impact. And my opinion means nothing to
- 1:07:32Josh Kerr, but I think he probably should have just
- 1:07:34stepped off there and then given like how dramatic it was when he
- 1:07:37pulled up. But he can say he's another
- 1:07:42world championship finisher, I guess, if that means something
- 1:07:45to him. But I don't know.
- 1:07:47It'd be interesting to get like his coaches taking stuff,
- 1:07:50whether they were like, oh, Josh, you should have stepped
- 1:07:52off or whether they like are fair play, you're battled
- 1:07:55through. But was it Moose from inside
- 1:08:00running was saying he's seen him in the hotel.
- 1:08:02And the next morning, he was like, literally having to be
- 1:08:05supported to walk, as in, like, arm around the shoulder.
- 1:08:09So if you think about that, you're probably thinking it
- 1:08:12wasn't the wisest idea. Do we know what it is?
- 1:08:15His Achilles is it. I think there is a quote from
- 1:08:17Dan Mackino actually, but I don't have it to hand.
- 1:08:21It doesn't look good though, does it?
- 1:08:23Although the race carried on and there's still lots of people in
- 1:08:27it. And as you get, we're coming
- 1:08:28down towards the last 200 to go and Whiteman makes that move
- 1:08:32that he made on Yakub a couple of years ago when he won it.
- 1:08:35And you're thinking, shit, to be honest, at first I was thinking
- 1:08:40it's maybe a bit early because Laros goes with him when he goes
- 1:08:43and you're thinking Laros is just, you played right into his
- 1:08:46hands. He's just going to use this
- 1:08:48search that you've put in and like slingshot right back off
- 1:08:51you. But it just didn't happen like
- 1:08:54you see. And once they got onto the
- 1:08:56straight, that Laros was given it what he had and he just
- 1:08:59wasn't moving forward. And then talking about like
- 1:09:03glancing towards the screen and stuff, you see him white men
- 1:09:06doing that. And you're like, no, just
- 1:09:08fucking look and go. And then, oh, it's like so close
- 1:09:13towards the end, I'm like willing the finishing line to
- 1:09:16come because I just wanted him to win so bad for himself
- 1:09:19because, you know, kind of like the journey that he's being on
- 1:09:22and stuff. And it was massively unexpected
- 1:09:25for him to even be in this position.
- 1:09:28And then I think it's Reynold Chariot who starts closing the
- 1:09:32gap before Nadair, isn't it? And then Nadair just like
- 1:09:37appears in lane 3, and he's moving at a massively faster
- 1:09:43speed than both of them. And it's just a case of whether
- 1:09:46Whiteman's going to get to the line or not, because Nadair is
- 1:09:49going to pass him at some point. And literally on the line in
- 1:09:54334. So Whiteman ended up with the
- 1:09:56silver, Isaac Nadair of Portugal, who was literally not
- 1:10:00spoken about at all going into these championships, comes away
- 1:10:05with the gold and Renault Chariot of Kenya goes away with
- 1:10:09the bronze. So big, big upsets.
- 1:10:13I think I've seen that Nadair was maybe like 250 to one say
- 1:10:18prior to the heat. So obviously as the rounds have
- 1:10:20progressed, that's come in and come in, but it's just insane
- 1:10:25offsets. Wasn't he another one that won
- 1:10:27one of the like main Diamond League races during this season?
- 1:10:31I think. Yeah, he did win one.
- 1:10:33I can't remember what one it was because.
- 1:10:35Oslo maybe have to check. Yeah, it was the bizarre games.
- 1:10:40Yeah, like the dream mile or is that the one?
- 1:10:44But like so like he won one of the key Diamond League races.
- 1:10:48Gracia won one of the key Diamond League races, and then
- 1:10:52so did Kameli, who nearly won the, you know, was a dip away
- 1:10:57from winning the 5K. Like they're three guys that
- 1:11:01were, let's say, north of 50 to one chances.
- 1:11:05So real rough is to be mixing it with it, let's say that well,
- 1:11:10comfortably outside the top probably 8 of their respective
- 1:11:15fields going into it. But because of the nature of
- 1:11:17these races, like I think we sort of so World Athletics I
- 1:11:22think has done a really good job of creating this points and auto
- 1:11:27qualifying time system, which is basically forcing everyone to
- 1:11:31train at such a high level to run really fast.
- 1:11:33So then it's sort of a given that everyone's sort of pretty
- 1:11:36close to being able to compete with each other in terms of
- 1:11:39pace. Then all of a sudden you add in
- 1:11:42the fact that now all of a sudden no one's taking these
- 1:11:44races out too fast where the fastest one wins.
- 1:11:47It means that all of these serves, someone that's got some
- 1:11:50wheels that can win a race is, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:11:53It can pop up. So I don't know.
- 1:11:55It just gets me thinking ahead of next year that you sort of
- 1:11:58keep an eye to some of these guys that have got really good
- 1:12:00kicks ahead of the championships.
- 1:12:03It's even more of a reason to send everyone who qualifies.
- 1:12:07Like the UK are not like it. The underdogs can win these
- 1:12:10races. Like the UK are so silly not
- 1:12:12sending the full team. Yep.
- 1:12:15Well, that's it. Like like you're saying that in
- 1:12:17the form lines are there in with hindsight and you go back and
- 1:12:20look through it. You can, kind of.
- 1:12:22It makes sense, just not on a face value.
- 1:12:26Initially maybe it doesn't stand out, but when you have hindsight
- 1:12:30you can see it. Or you can find a reasoning for
- 1:12:32it anyway. Yeah, I think like, I mean, not
- 1:12:37to get hung up on these betting agencies, but these betting
- 1:12:39agencies are doing their best. They're they're doing these best
- 1:12:42to set lines such that they make money.
- 1:12:44So they're doing their best to try and predict outcomes as we
- 1:12:47are when we're doing a competition on who they think is
- 1:12:49going to win races. But a lot of them are just
- 1:12:52setting it based on sort of all they've got is a lot of these
- 1:12:55times, like they seem to wait times a lot, but a lot of the
- 1:12:58times go out the window to a degree when it comes to a major
- 1:13:02championship because it doesn't. And so they're not taking into
- 1:13:05the heat, then they're not taking into the account the
- 1:13:08rounds, and then they're not taking into account the style of
- 1:13:11racing that's successful for you to be a winner championship.
- 1:13:16And so, yeah, so unless you've got these races that are sort of
- 1:13:19set up like a Diamond League, like we saw in the women's 1500,
- 1:13:23like Faith QPA gone, I think she ran like 64626050 something like
- 1:13:29she literally ran this like textbook progressive 1500 and
- 1:13:33ran everyone off her feet and sort of didn't give anyone a
- 1:13:36chance to take gold off her. And because she's considerably
- 1:13:40better than anyone, that's how it works.
- 1:13:42But in these other races where, like you say, Grant Fisher knows
- 1:13:44he can't just lead everyone to like he would just be leading
- 1:13:49Kajelcha to a win if he just sets a really fast tempo in 10K.
- 1:13:53So all of a sudden the races just completely change.
- 1:13:55And so everyone knew in this 1500, there's no Yacob who's
- 1:13:58just going to set tempo and going to turn it into a fast
- 1:14:01race. So then all these guys that are
- 1:14:02the most prolific, like if, if Laros gets paced in this, like
- 1:14:07he possibly still wins, right? Like he, he him kicking off a
- 1:14:11330 paced race still looks like the best guy who you'd probably
- 1:14:15pick. Whereas if it's 335, well, Jake
- 1:14:18Wyman, like his wheels are insane.
- 1:14:20Like when he gets fit, he just looks, he looks so good.
- 1:14:26It just changes the race entirely.
- 1:14:27Did you see his interview afterwards at all?
- 1:14:30It was quite, quite lengthy, 15 minutes, but it was literally he
- 1:14:35was still in his kit and like spikes in hand and stuff.
- 1:14:38Well, Laura Miller comes up, gives him a hug and stuff.
- 1:14:41Is that? Yeah, I think so.
- 1:14:44And he's just like spoken from the heart and like it's so raw.
- 1:14:48It was it was class like he's saying earlier in the year, like
- 1:14:52he was doubt on whether like he was still going to run.
- 1:14:55And even he said he joked and said to Neil Gurley, if if I
- 1:15:00don't get out the heat, then I think I'm done.
- 1:15:02And like that kind of shows his mentality and his expectation of
- 1:15:05himself going into it was like this could be over in the heat.
- 1:15:09But he said that I'm not quoting him directly.
- 1:15:12This is the general kind of consensus he was given was like,
- 1:15:16I just went to race freely. Like once the kind of final was
- 1:15:20clear in terms of who's going to be there, I knew what type of
- 1:15:24race it would be and I knew I'd be able to race for the win.
- 1:15:26I knew I was in it. And he said he even had like a
- 1:15:31fleeting thought of like, this is coming up that hundred
- 1:15:34straight. If this comes down to I'm going
- 1:15:36to have to throw myself, which he did.
- 1:15:38Like he literally gave her everything so.
- 1:15:42Do you know why he split up with his old man?
- 1:15:44Do you know why they're not? Why he's not coaching anymore?
- 1:15:47Because he kept getting them injured, he said it was it was
- 1:15:51going to start to detriment their relationship as like
- 1:15:54father, son, so you. Always wondered how that how
- 1:15:56that works hey. But you know who's coach is now?
- 1:16:02His girlfriend's dad. That's right.
- 1:16:05I did hear that in the commentary, yeah.
- 1:16:07She's Irish. Oh, she yeah, She's a good
- 1:16:11runner herself. He said actually that she acts
- 1:16:14as like his almost liaison officer.
- 1:16:17So he he will come home after training and like obviously
- 1:16:21offload like I'm feeling this like on my legs killing or
- 1:16:24whatever. And his girlfriend is then that
- 1:16:27line of communication to her dad and like kind of tells exactly
- 1:16:32how Jake's feeling, you know, whereas maybe he would struggle
- 1:16:35to have these like open and honest conversations with his
- 1:16:37dad or because they do have that father son relationship, he
- 1:16:41might feel like he's not had properly.
- 1:16:44So it's like completely different sets up, but it's kind
- 1:16:48of cool that is kind of utilizing the relationships that
- 1:16:52way. What else did he say?
- 1:16:53Because I'm sure there's a couple of other like gems in
- 1:16:56there. So as.
- 1:16:57If they break out, what is it the dad did there?
- 1:17:01Yeah, then that is some serious politics, isn't it?
- 1:17:06Where would you pick if you were in the dad shoes?
- 1:17:09I mean my bias was go straight to Whiteman.
- 1:17:16Where was going to win your money?
- 1:17:17Because I don't know if you've heard about this story this time
- 1:17:19when I ran with them, this guy, you know, I realized the other
- 1:17:23day that is he was actually on that run or one of them.
- 1:17:26It must she is. He must have done Zarpeck that
- 1:17:28year because she was there as well.
- 1:17:30But like, at the time I didn't kind of like know where for her
- 1:17:34to know her to be now. And you and Jake still keep in
- 1:17:38touch. As one one way communication now
- 1:17:42I think. No.
- 1:17:46I'm sure he'll be a very busy man now.
- 1:17:48On the back of that though, like his, his profile will be
- 1:17:52massively inflated. So come crawling back, don't
- 1:17:54worry. That's it.
- 1:17:55I'll always be here for you, Jake, Don't worry.
- 1:17:59Speaking of interview, future interviewees or past
- 1:18:03interviewees, but what were your thoughts?
- 1:18:07Reflections on Andrew's race, Owen.
- 1:18:09I totally done everything right, like I'm trying to remember now.
- 1:18:16There were so many. Races so well in the heats
- 1:18:19didn't he like heats semies he looked put himself in good spots
- 1:18:22had had the wheels and then he just like that fifty.
- 1:18:27I think we might have spoke to him about it last week but like
- 1:18:29and laughing about the Aussies getting knocked out.
- 1:18:31But the depth of it, right, like some of the guys that got run
- 1:18:34out in like Jacob and others that didn't make it through the
- 1:18:38heats. And then yeah, other top runners
- 1:18:39that got knocked out in the semis, like even to get into the
- 1:18:42final, like it was a ridiculously date final.
- 1:18:45All these guys are running low, airing low 330 shape.
- 1:18:48So and what is he a second and a half off of gold?
- 1:18:52Like it's not if that like it's not like he's far off.
- 1:18:57Yeah, and it's the whole thing of like nailing a championship.
- 1:18:59So like everything he'd done there, he ran well in the
- 1:19:03championship, so he sort of found something that will work.
- 1:19:07So yeah, it's promising. Unlike I think even your
- 1:19:10confidence, like you're a world finalist, like he's top 12 in
- 1:19:13the world, so top 10. So yeah, it's all positive.
- 1:19:19Yeah, because that was an interesting insight he shared,
- 1:19:22was just about how in the past he sort of pushed so hard and
- 1:19:27like your natural tendency, you can imagine when you're a couple
- 1:19:30of months out from a major event that you just want to throw
- 1:19:32everything at it, but he ends up getting sick.
- 1:19:35And so this time he was Eric on the side of caution.
- 1:19:38So maybe not throwing everything at it, but just wanting to be
- 1:19:41there. And it seemed to seemed to that
- 1:19:45that seemed to work well for him.
- 1:19:49But like, you, you have to be healthy as well, like do all the
- 1:19:53training, but being healthy is probably the biggest part of it.
- 1:19:56So there's no point of like run yourself into the ground and
- 1:19:59then getting sick a week before. Like, so yeah, fair play time
- 1:20:02changing groups and umm, yeah, it's worked.
- 1:20:06He's a world finalist. He can always have that, bring
- 1:20:08that to the grave with him. But umm.
- 1:20:10Yeah, it's positive. I think Europeans are next year.
- 1:20:13So like, you never know what can happen in that.
- 1:20:15You could be the easy double correspondent there there in
- 1:20:18Birmingham. Birmingham, yeah, I go be fun.
- 1:20:24I might be there myself. You, you've just given me a
- 1:20:27flashback of last night because this guy in the pub is, is from
- 1:20:32Queensland. It was a bit of a mad hat like
- 1:20:35from the Outback. And then he kept telling me he
- 1:20:39kept calling me Tommy Shelby and I was like, what are you going
- 1:20:42on? Well, I was like you.
- 1:20:43You've got the cities wrong for one.
- 1:20:46And they he just kept he had the cap on it kept looking at me,
- 1:20:49catching my eye and going, Tommy, if we're fighting
- 1:20:53tonight, me and you will have them.
- 1:20:55And I'm just like what? He on about me.
- 1:20:59He's telling me how he he shoots all these Crocs and bloody
- 1:21:03Buffalo and stuff in far north QLD just like, oh, you're a
- 1:21:08wild. He had a few too many.
- 1:21:11Yeah, but yes, I changed subjects.
- 1:21:13Sorry. You can.
- 1:21:15It goes to Birmingham on our behalf.
- 1:21:19That'd be fun. Let me see, I've just found the
- 1:21:22quotes I was looking for in Whiteman's interview.
- 1:21:24So he said he only does 40 to 50 miles running per week, more
- 1:21:29tempo than ever. And he emphasized that it's all
- 1:21:31controlled and just lots of Sprint stuff.
- 1:21:35Everything else is cross training, so that's like low
- 1:21:38volume. Isn't it the sprints again
- 1:21:41though? Yeah, well, that's what, less
- 1:21:43than 100 KS a week? 50 miles?
- 1:21:46I mean 6 I see 80 KA week or something.
- 1:21:49Yeah, I think he says he's like, I'm 31 maybe now.
- 1:21:53Like I've I've tried pushing 100 miles a week and stuff.
- 1:21:56I know lots of these other guys in my races are doing like big
- 1:21:59volume, but as I've found with my dad, like we just run into
- 1:22:02injuries all the time and clearly I can run well and
- 1:22:05compete off this low volume. So it does make you wonder like
- 1:22:10there are multiple ways to do things.
- 1:22:13I think obviously the more you go up the distance, the more
- 1:22:17prevalent volume is, but still you can supplement in places.
- 1:22:23And that was the other thing in the maybe you're thinking he'd
- 1:22:27gone too early at 200. And they after they asked him,
- 1:22:29the interviewer said to him, do you think in hindsight, do you
- 1:22:33regret doing that? And he was like, no, it's
- 1:22:36deliberate because I like to come into the the actual
- 1:22:38straight, being in the lead and having like a clear direction so
- 1:22:43I can focus on the finish line and just think about getting
- 1:22:45there. He said.
- 1:22:47When you watch kind of like the, the packs get all messy and
- 1:22:50people are trying to like scrap for a way out and stuff.
- 1:22:53I don't want to be getting caught up in that.
- 1:22:55I just want to have me and the finish line and that's my race.
- 1:22:59Not like scrapping with people to find the guy.
- 1:23:02That's fair enough. So that takes us to the women's
- 1:23:055000 meters, which was just last night, Saturday night.
- 1:23:08So whilst I was speaking to this mad Queenslander, I think you're
- 1:23:11watching it then. I did, yeah.
- 1:23:13It was a yeah, it was, it was interesting.
- 1:23:16I think there was sort of two main chances, right?
- 1:23:22Faith KPI gone, winner of the 1500, and Beatrice Chibet,
- 1:23:27winner of the 10,000, was sort of the two favourites going in.
- 1:23:31And yeah, it's pretty interesting.
- 1:23:33I think the two American ladies sort of went to the front and
- 1:23:39sort of didn't have much interest in terms of pushing the
- 1:23:41pace. I think the first K was 3/17 and
- 1:23:44then a few people sort of then it did.
- 1:23:47There was a bit of jostling in terms of who wanted to sort of
- 1:23:49get into better position before it would inevitably kick down.
- 1:23:53That sort of drove the pace up. And so I think the next three KS
- 1:23:56were 302258 and 256. So getting quicker, but still
- 1:24:01sort of like 15 minute pace, which I think the heats were one
- 1:24:05in or at least one of the heats I remember was comfortably under
- 1:24:0915 minutes. So like that, that sort of pace
- 1:24:12wasn't really, that didn't really count anyone out of it.
- 1:24:16I think pretty much all the finalists, including a couple of
- 1:24:18Aussies, they were all still sort of sitting in there and you
- 1:24:21sort of knew you're sort of expecting it to play into the
- 1:24:25hands of the 1500 meter runners. But I did listen to the Real
- 1:24:33Science of Sport podcasts and they're sort of one of them is a
- 1:24:37journalist and a sports scientist and sports scientist,
- 1:24:40very much data and numbers driven.
- 1:24:43And was sort of mentioning that Chibet in the past has been very
- 1:24:46successful in her 5K races around a real quick closing
- 1:24:49kick. So she's got great wheels on
- 1:24:52her. And that maybe, and this is what
- 1:24:53we're speaking about before in terms of Kip Yagon, maybe if she
- 1:24:57either her or Sega probably need to do some sort of sustained
- 1:25:00drive because Sega, I think raced Chibet in that 1500, that
- 1:25:04Chibet did the only one she did in one of the diamond leagues
- 1:25:07early in the season and beat her.
- 1:25:08And so the thought was if it's just some sort of fatigue
- 1:25:12resistance type burnout over 3-4 laps, that maybe that's their
- 1:25:16best chance of sort of beating Tibet.
- 1:25:19But no one did that. And it just got left to the last
- 1:25:22K. And it was literally like a
- 1:25:23carbon copy of the 10K. So I'm pretty sure the last K in
- 1:25:26the 10K was 238 and the last K in this 5K was 238 as well.
- 1:25:31And it nearly went 1-2 with Baracleda and Chabet, but in
- 1:25:35between them was Faith, Kippy, Aegon.
- 1:25:37So it went Chabet, Kippy, Aegon and Batacleda the Italian for
- 1:25:42third. Yeah.
- 1:25:43I don't know. I thought it was it was an
- 1:25:44exciting race. It sort of just didn't.
- 1:25:48It was. Yeah, it it it was an
- 1:25:50interesting race. I mean, Chabet was just too good
- 1:25:52in the end. It's a little bit surprising in
- 1:25:57the sense of like KP, Aegon just getting out kicked comfortably
- 1:26:00out kicked, but at the same time maybe not completely
- 1:26:03unsurprising when you had the context of how some of these
- 1:26:05races have played out in the past.
- 1:26:06I actually what I put it on when I got in last night and one of
- 1:26:09the strange observations I made was that as they all kind of
- 1:26:14finish, most of the athletes are literally keeled over on the
- 1:26:18floor like gasping for air as you do when you finish a track
- 1:26:22race. And Kippy, Aegon and Chabet are
- 1:26:25just they're like embracing each other, hugging and like running
- 1:26:28around. And all the others are just like
- 1:26:31completely wiped out and don't know does make you wonder.
- 1:26:35What you're trying to say, run. No, it's just an observation
- 1:26:38because even. Extremely fat.
- 1:26:41Bathacletti, there's kind of some stuff surrounding her a
- 1:26:44little bit, or I guess if you look deep enough there'll be
- 1:26:48things for everyone. But like even she is on the
- 1:26:52floor like gasping for air and Shabbat and Kippier gonna just
- 1:26:56like whoa first and second it. Would make you wonder.
- 1:27:01But I do think like it's a dangerous precedent just seeing
- 1:27:05people win and like kind of thinking that way because it
- 1:27:08kind of takes the fun out of the sport.
- 1:27:10And like, that would just be a sorry state of affairs.
- 1:27:14Obviously you have to acknowledge reality, but also
- 1:27:17you can't just default to thinking that way I think.
- 1:27:20Yeah, I think in, well, I'd say the women's 1500.
- 1:27:24Did you say the winner? Sorry, the 2nd place runner.
- 1:27:27So who was the head of Jess Hull?
- 1:27:31Is it Hawaii like so I don't think she'd run under 4 minutes
- 1:27:38before perhaps or maybe a just run 4 flat, right going into the
- 1:27:421500 meter final. And she's sort of like a lower
- 1:27:44named lesser known Kenyan athlete.
- 1:27:47And so you sort of immediately are like, oh, that's sounds
- 1:27:50suspicious that she's sort of beating someone who's like run
- 1:27:53354. But then when you sort of get
- 1:27:58her background, she's sort of going to the US college system
- 1:28:02is a got a contract with the Puma group like trains.
- 1:28:06I think at an L like at altitude over there is sort of like one
- 1:28:10of the emerging talents in the NCAA system.
- 1:28:13It's sort of run a series of times that sort of start to
- 1:28:16marry up with, you know, it's run like 158 low, like be a a
- 1:28:20thing MO earlier, like last year or something like sort of does
- 1:28:25make a lot more sense. Whereas if you don't have any of
- 1:28:27that context as to where the performance has come from, you
- 1:28:30go, well, you just improved too many seconds all that quickly.
- 1:28:33You I think you're doing something dodgy.
- 1:28:36So it's hard when you don't have their full context and you get
- 1:28:40to follow them as to understand what they're able to do that
- 1:28:43makes them so remarkable. I was so happy that the person
- 1:28:46and for it came for it and then you get a medal.
- 1:28:50I've thought it would have been a very sad day for Latics.
- 1:28:53If that person has been, yeah, convicted drug trade.
- 1:28:56So that makes sense. I think that I was watching the
- 1:29:00the BBC commentary of it. So you guys, well I don't know
- 1:29:03what your coverage was Owen, but Dean, you probably wouldn't have
- 1:29:06seen it. And I think it's Steve Cram and
- 1:29:08Paula Radcliffe and they did semi explain that whilst the
- 1:29:12race was unfolding. But obviously they're on
- 1:29:14national broadcast television so it's got to be done in a certain
- 1:29:17way. But they managed to somehow
- 1:29:21paint the picture. Yeah, he said, oh, she said she
- 1:29:25ate a breed or something like that.
- 1:29:27Steve Crown did. They don't.
- 1:29:29They done it very well. That was yeah, Tamsin Manu, the
- 1:29:34sort of 800 meter Aussie 800m runner that was doing the Aussie
- 1:29:38broadcast, said similar things. Basically.
- 1:29:41Yeah, she like she, she, she said that she ate a bad burrito,
- 1:29:47but the, you know, the courts or water found didn't find in
- 1:29:52favour of that. So.
- 1:29:54Which I think is all the truth. So and then the the Aussie girls
- 1:29:59finished in 10th and 11th that day with Rose being the higher
- 1:30:03of the two, London being 11th and Hannah not all of GB was 8,
- 1:30:08which I think is a pretty good result.
- 1:30:10Like Shirley buzzing with that. And I think I've had somewhere
- 1:30:13that in terms of like the prize money or like the funding that's
- 1:30:17attached to it is paid down to 8.
- 1:30:20So that'll help. Yeah, prize money to 8.
- 1:30:24The men's 800 meters was also on last night.
- 1:30:27I don't know if which one of you guys want to talk about this.
- 1:30:31Yeah, I kind of thought so. In the heat, PE ball got knocked
- 1:30:36out along with every single Australian athlete paying Craig
- 1:30:39new boys and then tearing in Kraken from the UK, which I
- 1:30:45heard that he was working in a supermarket like just recently.
- 1:30:50He was only like part time and now he's got to go to the world.
- 1:30:54So hopefully he'll get some funding now that he represented
- 1:30:58GB in the world. And then that young American
- 1:31:00kid, Luke and House, he crashed out as well in the heats.
- 1:31:07And this Emmys. The big names that got kicked
- 1:31:11out where Duncan Brazier who won the 2019 roles, Bryce Hoppel,
- 1:31:16which was another big American name, Ben Patterson, who came
- 1:31:20third in the Paris Olympics. And then Ireland's Mark English,
- 1:31:24who had the national record. Actually, he ran his sixth
- 1:31:29fastest times this year. So he was on good form.
- 1:31:35And yeah, he crashed out as well, so.
- 1:31:39That's probably like a decent result though, isn't it?
- 1:31:42Getting that, getting out the heats and into the semi is.
- 1:31:44It's just that like the other guys kind of overshadowed him a
- 1:31:47little bit now. No, he would have wanted a final
- 1:31:49Yeah, he yeah, he would have been disappointed, I'd say.
- 1:31:53Is that? Mark English from Ireland.
- 1:31:56The Aussie comment had has said that's quite a Irish name.
- 1:32:00Lol but the like all the big names.
- 1:32:04Well, a lot of the big names were in the final, like when
- 1:32:08Yanni is 1 is ranked up world #1A rock was ranked world #2 and
- 1:32:14you've got that Sajadi Algerian wizard and Max Bergen.
- 1:32:20And then, yeah, your man Mohammed Atui, he's an on
- 1:32:24athlete. He was running super well.
- 1:32:27But yeah, so the what pissed me off most about this race was the
- 1:32:34lane draw. Now I'm not just saying it
- 1:32:36because I'm from Ireland, but the Irish guy, King Mcphillips,
- 1:32:40he was ranked 55th coming into this and he won his heat, he won
- 1:32:45a semi final and then he was shafted with lane 2.
- 1:32:50Like you just have to push so much harder to get to the front
- 1:32:56if you're in lane 2. So your position is just shit
- 1:33:01from the start. But anyway, in the end,
- 1:33:05Emmanuel, when you only won in 141.86, which it was a
- 1:33:11championship record, your man Sajadi was second in 141.9 and
- 1:33:18Marco Arop was 141.95. And then Kim Mcphillips from
- 1:33:23Ireland was a 142.15 and he set a national record in the semi
- 1:33:29final and then better again in the final.
- 1:33:31So yeah, Kim Phillips, he's, he's been on the scene in
- 1:33:39Ireland for a while. Like I think 2-3 years ago he
- 1:33:42was like the fastest under 18 in the whole world.
- 1:33:46So he has good pedigree. But then he had a rough two
- 1:33:48years and umm, yeah, it's after clicking for him massively, umm
- 1:33:56knocked a full second off his PB in the final and with another 10
- 1:34:00meters he probably could have won it.
- 1:34:02He was coming like a train down the home straight and so like if
- 1:34:06he actually had a decent main draw, Ireland would have a gold
- 1:34:09medal. But what can you do?
- 1:34:13Was was this the race where because I remember watching 1
- 1:34:16and thinking like I was in like almost the 2nd lane, they didn't
- 1:34:20need to be like he was came wide, but then he wasn't really
- 1:34:25passing anyone at the time. He was just kind of running
- 1:34:27there rather than like being slotted in at the back.
- 1:34:30But it might have been a different race.
- 1:34:32Is this coming around with 1:50 to go?
- 1:34:35Yeah, I think so. Because yeah, he had to take it
- 1:34:37wide to get sort of a better position for look, he actually
- 1:34:44sounded a little bit disappointed in the interview
- 1:34:45because, like, coming forward is pretty shit, let's be real.
- 1:34:49But a medal could have been there.
- 1:34:51But look, he's still so young and yeah, hopefully he'll get
- 1:34:57into a lot more better quality races now.
- 1:35:01There was a point with maybe like 50 to go where a two week
- 1:35:04was like accelerating like crazy, wasn't he?
- 1:35:06But I think he kind of like just got boxed in a little bit and
- 1:35:09because he was on the rail and there must have been someone in
- 1:35:12front of him, but he was shit. He was moving.
- 1:35:15He's got some wheels. Hey, he always looks really good
- 1:35:17in that last 100. Yeah, and Max Bergen down in
- 1:35:23six, like he's ran a PB and he was one of the, I'm not going to
- 1:35:28say favorite because one year and he was the big favorite
- 1:35:30going into it, but he was kind of like a medal chance.
- 1:35:33And he's end up finishing 6th, but he's run a PB in the final.
- 1:35:38So it's like it'll be disappointed with where he's
- 1:35:40finished, but it's just hard. Like everyone in that race ran
- 1:35:45142. Yeah, the fastest, fastest 8th
- 1:35:50place apparently ever. Like in 800, like I remember
- 1:35:55the, you know, the 2012 Olympics when Redditch Redditch ran the
- 1:35:59world record, ran under 141. I just had a look at the
- 1:36:03results. I think so Massa Ayla, Massa
- 1:36:11Ayla, who finished 8th or last in this race would have been
- 1:36:15good for fourth in that race. And that race was insanely fast.
- 1:36:18Like Nick Simmons was fifth in like 142 high like these got
- 1:36:22that these this whole field is ahead of Nick Simmons in that
- 1:36:25race. And he he was running like that
- 1:36:28was, you know, of its time seen as such a fast 800 meters.
- 1:36:33So this race is just ridiculous. And it was interesting.
- 1:36:38Did you hear like apparently Wan Yong Yi was inspired by ridicia,
- 1:36:42ridicia and sort of that's why he ran the way he did.
- 1:36:45And I thought he ran it the right way.
- 1:36:47Like did you see in the semi finals how good?
- 1:36:52Because Sajati and Atui both just look so good in their
- 1:36:56closing speed And even the Irish lad and even Bergen, they all
- 1:37:00look really nice in that last 100 metres.
- 1:37:03And so I felt like the three guys, because the top three that
- 1:37:06finished in the top three at the Olympics with the top three in
- 1:37:09this race, but I felt like it needed to be that fast or they
- 1:37:12would have been in trouble because these other guys would
- 1:37:14have just run over the top of them.
- 1:37:16And so, yeah, pretty ballsy by when you're new to run like that
- 1:37:20because it risked a raw pool society sort of running over the
- 1:37:23top of him. But yeah, he pulled it off.
- 1:37:26Like the first lap was in 149 low or something like that,
- 1:37:30which is it's just crazy for us to then have to run another lap.
- 1:37:35Yeah, and they just what's interesting and apparently the
- 1:37:38400 meters is like this as well because like again, this is the
- 1:37:42real science of sport podcasts that breakdown because the World
- 1:37:44Athletics are really good. They give you 100 by 100 splits,
- 1:37:48but like you know, they're running considerably like they
- 1:37:51run considerably slower in the second-half than they do the
- 1:37:53first half in the 400 and they do the 8 as well.
- 1:37:57And so it's all about like that fatigue resistance, like running
- 1:38:00under. So like, what a brutal race.
- 1:38:03Hey, you're just absolutely suffering and you're just trying
- 1:38:06to hold form. But some some of these guys just
- 1:38:08absolutely leap out of the ground late.
- 1:38:10But they basically just couldn't use those kicks because these
- 1:38:13guys should just run the kicks from out of them by running 49
- 1:38:16seconds in the first lap. Yeah.
- 1:38:17So that's interesting because essentially this, the men's 800
- 1:38:20and the women's 800 are the two that kind of book the trend of
- 1:38:24like being slow and tactical and a ban up at the end.
- 1:38:28Because like you say, maybe if one yon you takes it through
- 1:38:31just half a second slower or something, he might have not run
- 1:38:36enough out of the other guy's legs and they might get him.
- 1:38:39But. Yeah, and if he runs half a
- 1:38:41second too quick, he does what Josh how he did at the US trials
- 1:38:44and gets run over the top of because he can't fight it out.
- 1:38:48So it was like, yeah, it's pretty impressive.
- 1:38:51I thought deserved. And like fair to Keene, like
- 1:38:56he's had a one way training camp here in Ireland, so he was
- 1:38:59probably better like adjusted to the climate.
- 1:39:03But yeah, still 4th in the world.
- 1:39:06It's pretty good. Where does he train?
- 1:39:08Any idea? He, I know his group, he runs at
- 1:39:12this group, Joe Ryan. And I want to say it's he's
- 1:39:19like, I don't think he's like fully funded either.
- 1:39:22Like he's not carried out here in Ireland.
- 1:39:23So he's like in in between college and running.
- 1:39:28So I'm not too sure. But well, now he'll 100% be
- 1:39:33funded and he will like I think he's sponsor.
- 1:39:36I did that anyway. So he's there, thereabouts.
- 1:39:39And who's his agent? Haven't a clue.
- 1:39:42It's not that Italian guy. Don't worry, someone that's come
- 1:39:45out of nowhere, you could say want to watch?
- 1:39:49Yeah, that takes us on to the women's 800 them, which was just
- 1:39:53earlier tonight in the heats. Gemma Ricci of GB went out.
- 1:39:58Jess Hall had that fall, but she got advanced anyway and
- 1:40:03deservedly so, I guess as well because like, it wasn't her
- 1:40:05fault in the semis that meant that Claudia Hollingsworth of
- 1:40:09Australia, the Goomba, who's a former medallist, Nakai I think
- 1:40:13is a medallist too. Abby Caldwell went out.
- 1:40:18And Jess Hall bizarrely ran an Australian national record in
- 1:40:22the semi 157.15. I think she only advanced as a
- 1:40:27fastest like loser or whatever the spots called as well.
- 1:40:31Didn't she? Like that was mad to run the
- 1:40:34national record and to get through that way, you know, like
- 1:40:38how good Claudia and Abby are, or at least like domestically in
- 1:40:43Australia, how good they seem to be.
- 1:40:46And then for Jess to just step down to like a discipline that
- 1:40:49isn't even one of their like natural ones.
- 1:40:52If you like and run the national record.
- 1:40:55I don't think it kind of says the Abbey or Claudia aren't good
- 1:41:00athletes. It just says how bloody good
- 1:41:02that Jess is. Like the range on it.
- 1:41:03It's it's insane. She's another person that's
- 1:41:07coached by her father, is she? Yeah.
- 1:41:11Because you don't hear much about her at all, really.
- 1:41:13Does she spend a lot of time in the USI?
- 1:41:15Think because she went to Oregon and then I think she went to
- 1:41:19join like one of those Oregon funded the Nike funded Oregon.
- 1:41:25Like what was the Oregon project in that?
- 1:41:28What did it turn into the Bauman project?
- 1:41:30But then it all sort of when they were getting disbanded, she
- 1:41:33sort of is no sooner was she looking to join at all sort of
- 1:41:39went a bit skew if with those clubs.
- 1:41:42And so she left and then I think came back home.
- 1:41:44But I thought that she she trains here, but then spends a
- 1:41:48lot of time, you know, with the circuit, like she did the Grand
- 1:41:52Slam track mates. And then I I thought she's
- 1:41:55fairly well funded. Like I remember hearing some
- 1:41:57stories of some of some of the local guys that she trains with
- 1:42:01coming with her to Europe to sort of help train as training
- 1:42:06partners. So I think she's her and her dad
- 1:42:09are quite deliberate in their approach.
- 1:42:12And I remember I think she's spoken on podcasts before
- 1:42:15talking about like at this time of the season, she won't have a
- 1:42:19long run, but she'll go on like a 10 or 12 day cycle and it will
- 1:42:23be like a workout every second day.
- 1:42:25So when you're getting really sharp and so a lot of speed and
- 1:42:28focus, I think basically it's I need to be able to run at this
- 1:42:32pace to be competitive. So I need to spend time running
- 1:42:35at quite a velocity. So she's spent a lot of time
- 1:42:38focusing on speed and speed endurance.
- 1:42:41And so I think that's worked very well.
- 1:42:43And then maybe because of the Grand Slam track, because she
- 1:42:46was one of the signed on athletes there and did the 800
- 1:42:50and 1500, it probably maybe meant that while I'm doing all
- 1:42:55this 800 meter work to get competitive at Grand Slam track
- 1:42:58for financial reasons, why not try and carry that into the
- 1:43:03world champs? And I think she mentioned after
- 1:43:04the 1500, the 1500, sort of her job, and then the eight hundreds
- 1:43:08just for a bit of fun. Remember when you used your
- 1:43:10daughter as an excuse to get a photo with her at nationals?
- 1:43:14Certainly do. That's good.
- 1:43:15Pretty much so Aurora's discussed.
- 1:43:20Although it worked out for Aurora, she she got the
- 1:43:25chocolates at the school carnival last week, so it was
- 1:43:28all meant. It was all all meant to be.
- 1:43:31You were playing for the chess to get motivated.
- 1:43:34That's it. I've only just thought about
- 1:43:36this now, but I wonder if kind of part of Jess's contract is
- 1:43:40like national record bonuses and stuff.
- 1:43:42And maybe she hasn't thought she might get a medal, but she might
- 1:43:45have looked at the time of, I think it was Abby Caldwell, was
- 1:43:48the whole, no, Claudia recently took it back, didn't she?
- 1:43:52And maybe she's thought, well, in the right race there with the
- 1:43:55fast field, I could run that. I might not get a medal.
- 1:43:58I might get a medal. But yeah, it's only when when
- 1:44:01you do these things and you start to think about it in
- 1:44:04different ways. But yeah, how the race panned
- 1:44:06out. Then in the final was Keely kind
- 1:44:08of done what she does in going to the front, but she didn't
- 1:44:11assert herself the way that she usually does.
- 1:44:14And is it Mary Mura? Mary Mora was able to kind of
- 1:44:19get on her shoulder and almost be like the the lead figure.
- 1:44:24And they've ended up going through halfway in an obscene,
- 1:44:29what was it, 55.6, I think. But Jess, even after 200 meters
- 1:44:39hair split, she's 2 seconds slower than the person who's
- 1:44:42gone through first. So she started really slowly and
- 1:44:46looked to kind of like run it evenly and like she'd done that
- 1:44:49in the semi really well, but in this race it was just a little
- 1:44:53bit different. Have you, have you seen the 1972
- 1:44:58men's 800 Olympics? Dave Waddle, the American dude,
- 1:45:02he like he's wearing a hat and he's like dead last by an
- 1:45:09absolute streak. And he like at the bell is still
- 1:45:14last and he just judges this race to absolute perfection and
- 1:45:18and wins gold in 800. And I was the I thought maybe
- 1:45:23there was like shades of that, you know, just where you sort of
- 1:45:25like, because all these people are getting out jostling, like
- 1:45:28spending all of their energy trying to get into the right
- 1:45:31position in that first lap. And I thought, oh, maybe this
- 1:45:33was going to work, but it was just sort of a bridge too far,
- 1:45:36wasn't it, for Jess? Yeah, you can't take anything
- 1:45:38away from her because she's come away with the national record.
- 1:45:41But maybe she was just like a little bit too conservative
- 1:45:45because in the semi she kind of like naturally attached back on
- 1:45:50because they kind of came back to her.
- 1:45:52But here it was a bit more difficult, wasn't it?
- 1:45:54Like they didn't come back to her so easily and maybe she
- 1:45:57started to like panic a little. She was just, I mean, she still
- 1:46:01ran. Was it 110th outside of the
- 1:46:03Australian record? She ran in the semi.
- 1:46:05So it wasn't like she ran bad. They were just, I mean, they
- 1:46:08were just very fast and very good, weren't they?
- 1:46:12So then I think, yeah, Keely maybe let Maura like dictate it
- 1:46:17a little bit too much. And this is something we almost,
- 1:46:22well, not almost. We did kind of like highlight
- 1:46:24that yesterday, didn't we? When we were texting, I kind of
- 1:46:27messaged you and said thoughts on Keely not being like 100%
- 1:46:31safe for the gold because there's just something about the
- 1:46:34heat and the semi, although she won them all.
- 1:46:36Like she got done on the line for the semi, but it looked like
- 1:46:39she was easing off anyway. But she just didn't look
- 1:46:42amazing. She just looked a bit like kind
- 1:46:45of stiff almost. I still think that's the only
- 1:46:49way Keely loses that race is with the fast first lap.
- 1:46:53I think if it's a little bit slower she still wins.
- 1:46:57She just burnt the cans from low end and she had nothing left.
- 1:47:00You could see she was like you could see that she was panicking
- 1:47:05like with kind of 50 to go as Hunter Bell and that Lillian
- 1:47:09Odira come in because she's I think she's taken like side
- 1:47:13glances to see like what's going on.
- 1:47:16And yeah, they've they've just both kind of nipped her.
- 1:47:20And this Canyon girl, Lillian Odiras, came from nowhere.
- 1:47:23Like at one point you're thinking Hunter Bells going to
- 1:47:26win, she's just going to pass Keely and that's going to be it.
- 1:47:28And then this, this Canyon girl is just finished like a train as
- 1:47:31well. It was only for like Hunter
- 1:47:33bells sort of die for the line that situation sort of like
- 1:47:36stuck at her shoulder. That's the only reason she that
- 1:47:38Keely as well. She don't so well to get up.
- 1:47:41Yeah, by 100th of a second that was, wasn't it?
- 1:47:44Yeah, yeah, and you're one you're 1 of came fifth stage her
- 1:47:47Clacker. That was a massive.
- 1:47:49I think that's a two second baby for her or something like that.
- 1:47:51It's massive. It just shows you once you get
- 1:47:54in the race, you can just hang on for dear life.
- 1:47:58Because she was the other one who was the fastest finisher
- 1:48:01with Jess Hall, wasn't it? In the semi or Yeah, a little
- 1:48:04bit disappointing from that Swiss girl Audrey Wearo, because
- 1:48:06she was kind of like touted as being almost the main contender
- 1:48:10to Keely's gold, wasn't she? Yeah, she was someone who I had
- 1:48:14in my Middle East that still running.
- 1:48:20Not good. And you're 1.
- 1:48:22Sarah More Sarah Mora Handem. Mary Mora.
- 1:48:26They're not sisters, they're cousins.
- 1:48:28I did hear that, yeah. To take a few Chariots in the
- 1:48:341500 meter final and the Mora's in the 800.
- 1:48:40I will have to claim or remind everyone that I did pick Lily
- 1:48:43and Odira from bronze whilst we're here, but she outperformed
- 1:48:48my expectations and got the gold.
- 1:48:51You did get a point for that, I'll let let it be nice.
- 1:48:54Did anyone else have a? No, I, I pretty unique that I
- 1:48:58don't think so I'll have to have a look.
- 1:49:00Not many if any. So I don't know where you pulled
- 1:49:03that from. Yeah, I can't remember exactly
- 1:49:06what I said, but I did have some sort of justification for it,
- 1:49:09but well, anyway. GBT.
- 1:49:12No I've got some, I've got some notes on her here seeing as
- 1:49:15she's come away as the world champion.
- 1:49:17So she's 26 years old. She wouldn't this bizarre.
- 1:49:20She won the Kenyan trials in 2 minutes.
- 1:49:23They're seen so like imagine how slow they must have come through
- 1:49:26the 1st lap. My PB is quicker than that
- 1:49:28actually. You could have won.
- 1:49:32Oh, actually, I'll quick one on the Kim Mcphillips.
- 1:49:36My brother used to run. He's 23 now and he came second
- 1:49:43in Ireland when he was like under 11.
- 1:49:46So he'd have been 10. And Kim Mcphillips came eighth
- 1:49:49in that race. So for the he's just walking
- 1:49:52around now saying, oh, I could have won a word medal, I could
- 1:49:55have been world champion. All this if I stayed run a
- 1:49:58clown. Is that your brother?
- 1:50:01Yeah, the you're just a few years younger than me.
- 1:50:04Not the younger, younger brother, no.
- 1:50:07OK. So, Nina.
- 1:50:09Yes, so she came forth in Paris last year, this Lily Nodira.
- 1:50:14So maybe she's gone a little bit under the radar really, because
- 1:50:17obviously she's just missed the podium there.
- 1:50:19She'd already ran 156 this year and as we'd like, kind of
- 1:50:23identified, it was looking like it was going to be the Keely
- 1:50:27show and like all the other medals were kind of up for
- 1:50:29grabs. So potentially she's just timed
- 1:50:33their peaks of perfection and just came through.
- 1:50:36She's ranked now ranked 7th all time with that run, but
- 1:50:41unfortunately for her, she's not the Kenyan record holder.
- 1:50:43There's Pam Pamela Gilimo, who's rank quicker than her still.
- 1:50:49And I'm still not having the world record for the 100 for the
- 1:50:52Whims 800. No, there's a couple of them
- 1:50:54because I was looking before there's two or three times from
- 1:50:57like the 80s or the 90s that are just absurd.
- 1:51:00So what do we think it was with Keely?
- 1:51:02Like she's a little bit underdone maybe with a prep, a
- 1:51:06short prep or like she just kind of didn't have the strength to
- 1:51:10kind of progress through the rounds because again, of a prep.
- 1:51:14Maybe she's been undercooked. I don't know, 154 is not bad
- 1:51:17though either like I'm able. It's like race sharpness going
- 1:51:20to the rounds. Jakob was blue as in cut in the
- 1:51:25cooking's jail. He was like rah, rah, rah.
- 1:51:28Like he had nothing. And you could see it from the
- 1:51:30off, like he just didn't look smooth.
- 1:51:32And even when he went to the front and the 5K, like I just,
- 1:51:36you just knew he was going to hold it.
- 1:51:37He just, I don't even know why he went to the front, to be
- 1:51:39honest, just to get a bit of TV time.
- 1:51:41But yeah, I think Kelly, well, my, I think she was a bit
- 1:51:45undercooked. But like that's it.
- 1:51:47That was a championship record is only 3/10 faster than her.
- 1:51:51Like I don't think she it wasn't like she was, I don't know.
- 1:51:55I just think there was a couple of other really good athletes.
- 1:51:58I wonder, like, what the dynamic was like in training between
- 1:52:01Hunter Bell and Keely. Like, did they know it was going
- 1:52:04to be so close and it could go one way or the other?
- 1:52:07Or were they? Because I feel like they still
- 1:52:09would have been expecting Keely to, if not win the race, like
- 1:52:14beat Georgia Hunter Bell. I'd love to ask the coach that
- 1:52:16question because he'd have a fair idea as to where the 2
- 1:52:19girls are AT. And Georgia Hunter belt, Like
- 1:52:22she knew she was going to do well because she picked 100 /
- 1:52:251500 so she had an inkling as well.
- 1:52:27So if you're interested to ask your man Trevor, is his name
- 1:52:30Trevor? Something like that.
- 1:52:32Trevor Painter, I think. Yeah, he's funny.
- 1:52:35He seems like a big joker. Doesn't even seen him.
- 1:52:38Yeah, funny character. Get him on run.
- 1:52:41Yeah, working on it. Well, as soon as you say that
- 1:52:44we've, we've got a big one coming next week and we
- 1:52:47hopefully, well on paper we're locked in.
- 1:52:50So we'll see. We're rolling.
- 1:52:53There's no lull after the World Championships.
- 1:52:55We're going, we're going again next week.
- 1:52:57So we're incredibly excited about this one and we'll get the
- 1:53:02clubhouse list, the clubhouse members to ask some questions
- 1:53:05because I'm sure people will be keen.
- 1:53:08I haven't told you this, but when we literally like started
- 1:53:11it, as in potentially the day we made the Instagram page or like
- 1:53:16recorded the first episode or whatever, I wrote down like
- 1:53:20maybe 5 or 6 names as in like people who you would have as
- 1:53:24dream guests and literally titled the dream guests and
- 1:53:27dated it just as like a bit of a funny reference.
- 1:53:30Thinking that maybe in like two or three years we'll look back
- 1:53:33on this and be like, oh, how cool.
- 1:53:35Like I identified them at the very beginning and this person's
- 1:53:40name is on there from, I think I've dated it 28th of Feb, so
- 1:53:45literally like 6-7 months ago. And then here he is.
- 1:53:49Oh well, here they are locked in.
- 1:53:51Don't mess about, that's for sure.
- 1:53:53This was not through DMSR. This was 3 emails so very
- 1:53:57formal. We've taken it up a notch.
- 1:54:00Yeah, it's got to go about it the right way.
- 1:54:02It's the key. And I've never heard this guy on
- 1:54:05a podcast either, which is pretty cool.
- 1:54:08I don't think anyway. I did think that and I searched
- 1:54:12their name and they come up twice but not for like years
- 1:54:17ago. So they haven't spoken in recent
- 1:54:21times, which is cool, but definitely someone we're all
- 1:54:25like incredibly familiar with and I've followed their journey
- 1:54:28through like over channels. I feel like a lot of people
- 1:54:31wouldn't be familiar with them either though with them either
- 1:54:35though. He hasn't really made it on to
- 1:54:39like the world world stage, but they're still such well known in
- 1:54:43the running scene. Yeah, when you said the name, I
- 1:54:45couldn't believe it. But we'll keep the listeners
- 1:54:48guessing. Yeah, very excited.
- 1:54:51So last race to wrap us up was the men's 5000 meters, which
- 1:54:56happened also just earlier and it was the decider for the the
- 1:55:00medal competition for the pair of ASICS.
- 1:55:04So did we all watch this? Yeah, in the semis we lost
- 1:55:10Almgren because potentially he was a little bit overdone with
- 1:55:14the 10 Ki think he he went to the front again, didn't he, in
- 1:55:18his semi and tried to make it honest.
- 1:55:20And everyone, as we've said, kind of like managed to stick
- 1:55:24with him and ran past him in the end.
- 1:55:26And that work that he'd done at the front by himself was just a
- 1:55:29little bit too much. We also lost Dominic Lebarlu, we
- 1:55:33lost Navi Nordas, Brian Faye, Seth O'Donnell, Darren
- 1:55:38Mcelhenney, which I've got here, was close.
- 1:55:41He was kind of, there was a group of I want to think we can
- 1:55:45hear your breath in a bit. Is it is it you or is it me?
- 1:55:50Tanya. Bit of column A, bit of column
- 1:55:52B. That's all right.
- 1:55:54People might like that. Paying them close into close
- 1:56:01attention, that's what. But Michael Haney, he was just
- 1:56:05on the back of that lead group and like he was still with them
- 1:56:08coming into like the last straight, but he just dropped
- 1:56:11off a little bit. It came tenth topic qualify.
- 1:56:15So yeah, he would have liked to get to the final, but still,
- 1:56:19even making it like he got through on ranking points.
- 1:56:22So to get there was a massive achievement.
- 1:56:26But yeah, he would have been disappointed.
- 1:56:28Yeah, because I had me. I own him as well.
- 1:56:29Because the field kind of separated massively once, like a
- 1:56:32bit of pace went in, but he managed to go with the front
- 1:56:35group still. But he just wasn't like to,
- 1:56:38couldn't get himself high enough or could he?
- 1:56:40We lost Jack Rayner and we lost Andrew Costkran, too.
- 1:56:43If you're, if you're Jack Rayner, like, Can you imagine?
- 1:56:45Like he was detached pretty early on.
- 1:56:48Like he's literally just jogging around.
- 1:56:50They're thinking he used to run a marathon in three weeks.
- 1:56:54Like when's Mel? It's Melbourne's pretty soon,
- 1:56:57isn't it? Yeah, mid-october.
- 1:57:00Like, I just can't imagine. Like yeah, I know what ways had
- 1:57:05to be. Yeah, he has not the best year
- 1:57:07in terms of prep for this. So it probably would have known
- 1:57:10maybe that he wasn't going to be super competitive here.
- 1:57:13And it was just like almost ACV job, like, yeah, another
- 1:57:18appearance at the world champs. But I obviously wouldn't have
- 1:57:21wanted to be so uncompetitive either, especially when like Kai
- 1:57:27goes through and he was like in the same heat was Nikai, I
- 1:57:30think. So you're drawing it was Kai and
- 1:57:32Seth's one, but still like he's set the benchmark as me in terms
- 1:57:37of like what the standard is. I don't want to say expectation
- 1:57:40because I think I've seen something that he was like the
- 1:57:43first Aussie to make the 5000 meter final since Mottram or
- 1:57:47something. So you can't say it's the
- 1:57:49expectation, but nevertheless, he's done it.
- 1:57:51So people are going to be compared to him.
- 1:57:54I think seeing Seth as well, saying he was disappointed that
- 1:57:59it didn't kind of go to plan for him because I did, you know, on
- 1:58:03was it Thursday or Friday? And I message used and was like,
- 1:58:07are we going to see Seth like miles off the front, like making
- 1:58:11it honest and making a room from home?
- 1:58:13So I thought, oh, this might be interesting.
- 1:58:15Like I'll message him something along the lines of like, good
- 1:58:17luck. Have you got a plan?
- 1:58:19And he actually come back and said, I just find it now
- 1:58:25because, yeah, I thought the way he runs these mad tactical races
- 1:58:30sometimes, and we've seen him at, like, Box Hill running that
- 1:58:3230 and low solo. Like, he's not afraid to just do
- 1:58:35something like that, is he? And he said, I've got a plan.
- 1:58:38I'll put my heart and soul into it.
- 1:58:41If you're good enough, you can qualify from anywhere.
- 1:58:43So I was like, sick. Let's go.
- 1:58:46He he didn't really need to do much because Hawker didn't
- 1:58:49really give much anyone much of a chance that he sort of just
- 1:58:53sat running 1330 odd tempo and just controlled that, hey,
- 1:58:56didn't he? Yeah.
- 1:58:58And which? So then as we move on to the
- 1:59:00final, he took control again. Initially for the 1st 600 or so.
- 1:59:05He went to the front and it was pretty slow.
- 1:59:08And then you seen Grant and Nico Young.
- 1:59:11Grant Fisher and Nico Young, the Americans, they must have had a
- 1:59:14chat before this in terms of taking some sort of control over
- 1:59:18it and not allowing it to be completely slow because that
- 1:59:21would having it a little bit faster would play into their
- 1:59:24hands. So you would think, so they kind
- 1:59:26of jumped on the front and started alternating like a lap,
- 1:59:29a lap and a half each and put some pace into it.
- 1:59:33So there's a 241st K that then strung it out into single file.
- 1:59:40And then The Ethiopians were up there as well.
- 1:59:42Those two of them, I don't know which ones it was, but at one
- 1:59:45point it was like America, Ethiopia, America, Ethiopia, and
- 1:59:49everyone was just kind of sucked along into this train because it
- 1:59:52did get moving. To be fair.
- 1:59:54The second K was 235 and then Gabriel, he wets.
- 2:00:00It was who then went to the front some point in the 2K,
- 2:00:03which is when George Mills became detached from the back as
- 2:00:06well. And initially it was just like a
- 2:00:09meter or two, and then he just kind of slowly fell away from
- 2:00:14it, which I'm not going to say he was like a metal.
- 2:00:19Expectation, but I'm sure in the back of his mind some way would
- 2:00:22have been thinking like a bronze medal isn't out of this world in
- 2:00:26terms of a possibility. So that'll know that'll be a
- 2:00:28disappointing result for him. The third K was 236.
- 2:00:34Jacob then goes up to the front around 3 1/2 K.
- 2:00:38And as you said, when you're thinking, I don't know why,
- 2:00:42because he doesn't exactly look like he's going to be able to
- 2:00:46run away from them all, but maybe he just wanted to like at
- 2:00:50least have a go. And the fourth K was 240.
- 2:00:55And then this, although it's been quick, there's still a lot
- 2:00:58of people there. Wasn't there maybe like 6 to 8
- 2:01:00people like Gressier, Cameli, Hawker, The Ethiopians, and I
- 2:01:06think Fisher and Nico Young was still there thereabouts anyway.
- 2:01:11And Cameli made like the first major move, I think maybe like
- 2:01:15800 to go. And I was thinking like,
- 2:01:18considering this guy is touted as like the the closer or the
- 2:01:22finisher that he's gone quite early.
- 2:01:25Like I would be expecting someone else to be up there and
- 2:01:27him just kind of tucked in waiting to RIP off the bend.
- 2:01:31And then as they get to 200 out, there's still 5 or 6 and Hocker
- 2:01:37is literally in five 5th or 6th and he hasn't like done
- 2:01:41anything. And then all of a sudden he
- 2:01:43steps out into lane 2 and it's just, it looks so effortless for
- 2:01:47him. Like you can see that he is the
- 2:01:491500 meter racer and he has just a different level of speed
- 2:01:55compared to these guys. But then it's so underrated
- 2:01:59because he's run 12:45 or something like silly, like
- 2:02:03indoors. He he ran that insane time with
- 2:02:07Fisher. Remember when Fisher ran like
- 2:02:08the American Record and they were like kind of taking turns
- 2:02:12on the front and going toe to toe?
- 2:02:15Like he's got strength and he's run ridiculously fast, 5 KS.
- 2:02:19So if you're going to put it in that 30 minute range, he's going
- 2:02:22to be able to close and finish off that.
- 2:02:24And I don't even think this one is.
- 2:02:27With hindsight, it was obvious. I think like we'd spoke about it
- 2:02:30in the lead up, hadn't we? Kind of when we're talking about
- 2:02:34how 365 would price them and stuff, we'd identified Hockers.
- 2:02:37Like shit, he kind of stands out there, especially as he didn't
- 2:02:42have to run the 1500 meter final. 80% of these other guys
- 2:02:47who are like considered competitors had run the 10,000
- 2:02:51meter final. And we've seen what that had
- 2:02:53done to like Omgren in the heats and then all these guys have got
- 2:02:56through the heats and having to go again.
- 2:02:59So you sort of thought like literally as long as Hocker is
- 2:03:03there in the last 400 meters, like it just run away from them.
- 2:03:07And it's literally what he did. He's crossed, he's run over
- 2:03:11Camelli and he's like celebrating across the line.
- 2:03:15Like he wasn't in the bin. This was like, yeah, thanks very
- 2:03:19much. Like redemption almost for the
- 2:03:22DQ. Yeah, I thought it was a fun
- 2:03:24finale in terms of the to the World champs and like another
- 2:03:28one of those races where, I don't know, I think they
- 2:03:31improved tactically, the distance guys improved on the
- 2:03:3510K to try and make it quicker. And I reckon maybe 13 minutes is
- 2:03:40pretty much on the cusp for the likes of Grecia and Tucker.
- 2:03:44Like those guys haven't run much quicker than that.
- 2:03:47But it's probably just not quite quick enough where if they're in
- 2:03:50great physical Nick that they can just hang in there and then
- 2:03:54they've just got their wheels are just too good.
- 2:04:00Should need to mention the Kyle Robinson.
- 2:04:03The Aussie guy was in fourth and.
- 2:04:06I I literally my jaw dropped when I seen that.
- 2:04:08Yeah, and it was funny, right, Because I mean, you could sort
- 2:04:11of from 200 metres out, your eyes even from the, the lap out,
- 2:04:15I think Hawker's 12th at the bell and you sort of, it's like
- 2:04:18inertia ride. Like you sort of, you can sort
- 2:04:21of see and you can, you can see what's coming before it, you
- 2:04:25know, before the the race is finished, you sort of feel,
- 2:04:27you're feeling Hawker running through everyone.
- 2:04:30So your eyes are sort of drawn to watching him, I think, and
- 2:04:33then you've got another eye bid on Gracie because you know what
- 2:04:36he just did the other night. And so your eyes are sort of
- 2:04:39very much on them. And then Camellie, we sort of
- 2:04:42called out as one of those, you know, Smokey picks to maybe
- 2:04:47'cause an upset. So you sort of very much focused
- 2:04:49on that. And then little did I know that
- 2:04:51like Robinson, who you saw was prominent at the bell.
- 2:04:54I would just didn't didn't think he was he was going to finish
- 2:04:57that strong and in that sort of field, like he's sort of like
- 2:05:01ahead of like Nico Young Fisher, like all those other guys.
- 2:05:04They're still there with the belt to go and he's finishing
- 2:05:07over the top of all of them like insane.
- 2:05:10Although Robinson did say after his heat that felt easier than
- 2:05:14what he thought and that he's in great shape and he was a
- 2:05:17medallist at World Indoors in 3K earlier in the year.
- 2:05:20So it's not like he's like he's been in some pretty exceptional
- 2:05:23form, which is why when I still remember fairly vividly, which
- 2:05:28is why when we're at nationals in April when Seth O'Donnell
- 2:05:32beat Kyle Robinson in a Sprint finish, we were like, well,
- 2:05:37like, quite shocked. Like, that was like a ridiculous
- 2:05:41upset where like some locals just done that to someone who's
- 2:05:45clearly competitive at a world stage.
- 2:05:46So which hopefully gives someone like Seth O'Donnell a bit of
- 2:05:51confidence that maybe he's not as far off as what he might be
- 2:05:54feeling at the minute. Just a quick one, like I've
- 2:05:58slayed off Yakup here for saying he's unfair.
- 2:06:00Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah. Blown.
- 2:06:05Isn't that crazy? Yeah, completely 1902 for.
- 2:06:07Just a lazy 1302. That's not, yeah, considering
- 2:06:12how tough the the standards are that we've talked about in the
- 2:06:16lead up to this, I think do a 1301 and then the top 8 have
- 2:06:20gone and ran under that tough standard in these like miserable
- 2:06:24conditions. It's kudos to Gas, to Fisher and
- 2:06:28Nico Young for making sure it was that fast.
- 2:06:32And like Robinson, when he ran that standard was like, you
- 2:06:36know, in that boss, bouncy Boston indoor track, perfectly
- 2:06:39paced. He'd like the environment.
- 2:06:42It's like ideal and they're just sneaking under that.
- 2:06:47So this this sort of fitness they must have been in going
- 2:06:49into these champs is ridiculous. Yes, he's run sub 30 and again,
- 2:06:53as nice. He must be 1258 as PB or
- 2:06:56something because isn't Mottram's record maybe like only
- 2:06:5956 or 57? And then you've got Mick Swayne
- 2:07:03in the middle, maybe somewhere to shitty.
- 2:07:06He's in shape to run that, isn't he?
- 2:07:10Is that playing fourth all time? Is it?
- 2:07:12So you've got Matram Mix, Wayne Rainer and then him.
- 2:07:16Well, I think he's already there because he doesn't have PB next
- 2:07:19to his name in this race. Yeah, sorry, but yeah, he must
- 2:07:24be 4th Rainer as well. Yeah, like you say and I think
- 2:07:27that pretty much concludes us for the results wrap up of the
- 2:07:31world champs. So just kind of like some
- 2:07:34reflective questions that did they live up to expectations
- 2:07:38because we've been talking about them for months on end in terms
- 2:07:41of the builder? I thought like 99, actually, no,
- 2:07:45all the races were belters. Like they're all so close.
- 2:07:48There was massive upsets. I think that the warm weather
- 2:07:53just made a toss up. Yeah, I'd like every single race
- 2:08:01was so good. Like he had big names even like
- 2:08:03the 110 meter hurdles that your man Grant Holloway, who's won
- 2:08:07like every single gold medal there is.
- 2:08:09He didn't make it out of the heats.
- 2:08:11Like there were so many upsets and yeah, so many tight races.
- 2:08:16So yeah, I thought it was unbelievable.
- 2:08:19The warm weather's almost like when it rains at the F1.
- 2:08:23It's the great equalizer. Genuinely it is.
- 2:08:25It just makes that level playing field for everyone.
- 2:08:28Yeah, I thought it was really good.
- 2:08:29Like I just think what World Athletics are doing in terms of
- 2:08:33the direction. So true, trying to clean up the
- 2:08:35sport, which is really good to try and ensure that the racing
- 2:08:39is becoming more even. You sort of seen that in the
- 2:08:42fields that the ranking system, you know, like it's like a bit
- 2:08:46more like tennis where you're sort of going in knowing who's
- 2:08:49ranked what. So it's easier to follow and
- 2:08:51you've sort of started to get stories with people.
- 2:08:54The only thing I don't like about it is like World Athletics
- 2:08:56are creating such a good product, but yet countries still
- 2:08:59have such influence over whether or not athletes get to go, yet
- 2:09:03they qualify themselves. Their country doesn't qualify
- 2:09:05them. So like, that's my only knock
- 2:09:07on. Like they're not the fields not
- 2:09:10being completely represented. Like all of the athletes that
- 2:09:13rightly qualify don't necessarily get to compete.
- 2:09:15I think be interested to hear what World Athletics get to say
- 2:09:19about that to try and encourage better competition or more even
- 2:09:23fair competition for everyone. I like the idea of like these
- 2:09:27what, you know, the extra wild card with the Diamond League and
- 2:09:30all the returning champions so that you maybe get 4-4 athletes
- 2:09:34from some countries that have sort of earned that.
- 2:09:36I think that's like a good idea. So yeah, I don't know.
- 2:09:39I was very in well invested I thought.
- 2:09:42I thought the way they did the mates, like even though they
- 2:09:44they didn't end with the marathons but they finished, you
- 2:09:47know, with them because they only had morning sessions for
- 2:09:49the first few days. And so because they needed to
- 2:09:51get through all those heats early to then set up the finals.
- 2:09:54I thought the way they stacked timetable was good and doing the
- 2:09:58marathons early I thought was good as well.
- 2:10:01Yeah, I thought it was good. I felt a bit tired by the end of
- 2:10:05it, like it was so many nights of back-to-back to back
- 2:10:07athletics. But I don't think you can
- 2:10:10condense the mate because then you don't give some athletes the
- 2:10:12opportunity to compete across multiple events.
- 2:10:16But yeah, I enjoyed it. I'd say the the other member of
- 2:10:21my household would be quite glad that they're over though, so
- 2:10:24that the TV can be somewhat shared over the the upcoming
- 2:10:28days and weeks. Of me Bear.
- 2:10:32Well, yeah, Cat TV does end up going on forum.
- 2:10:38So Beijing 2027 is the next edition of the World Champs,
- 2:10:43which is what, 7 or 8 hours from Perth hopefully.
- 2:10:48If I'm still in Perth, maybe I would look to venture over there
- 2:10:52if that's an option. That would be pretty cool.
- 2:10:54We're definitely going to be skipping training weeks given
- 2:10:57the the length of this podcast already and we can kind of catch
- 2:11:00up on that next week. Did anyone have anything like
- 2:11:04pressing that they just wanted to say about training weeks or
- 2:11:07anything? Yeah, my treadmill broke.
- 2:11:10Oh shit. Listen to this.
- 2:11:13My treadmill broke. I woke up on Monday morning with
- 2:11:16a sore knee that came out of nowhere and I've got a cold.
- 2:11:20So yeah, still knocked out 130 kilometers though.
- 2:11:24So I'll tell you next week I'm going.
- 2:11:29I could be in the bin. Is is the treadmill like come
- 2:11:33with any insurance or anything? Yeah, I got a six month warranty
- 2:11:37on it. It was just annoying.
- 2:11:38Like it took like a week to get here.
- 2:11:41Literally ran on it like twice the three times and then a
- 2:11:44bearings gone and they get the motors just making really weird
- 2:11:48sound. So I'm not just not running on
- 2:11:50it. It's just annoying.
- 2:11:52I was so happy that it like. Did you have it like, I'm really
- 2:11:56fast, Those are just gone. Like not for that reason.
- 2:11:59No, I was just chilling out like like I don't do.
- 2:12:02I think it's even better because it can really controlled my like
- 2:12:05the easy double S So like I'd do it like 12.6 kilometers an hour,
- 2:12:10which is like I'd say it's like four 40s or four 50s.
- 2:12:15And yeah, maybe I need to lose some weight.
- 2:12:17Maybe I'm just too fat for it. I don't know.
- 2:12:20Super annoying. Got the whole garage done up.
- 2:12:24Not even the put in it. You best be hoping that the
- 2:12:27weather doesn't turn then. It's turning, I think the hour
- 2:12:33daylight savings kicks in in like 3 weeks or something like
- 2:12:36that. And that's when it's just dark
- 2:12:38morning and evening. Like at the moment, the
- 2:12:41evenings, you still get something in the evenings
- 2:12:43because it's relatively bright. But yeah, the mornings are
- 2:12:46getting darker and darker and colder.
- 2:12:48That's got that replacement on the way.
- 2:12:51Yeah. And there's a couple of quick
- 2:12:53things I just wants to fire off and running news.
- 2:12:55Then a scene. Did you see Alex Yee announced
- 2:12:58he's going to race Valencia? So I think the the triathletes
- 2:13:01caught the marathon bug on the back of London.
- 2:13:03There'd be interesting to see how fast he can go.
- 2:13:05Sub 210. Yeah, I think that'll be the
- 2:13:08goal in it. Guys, Valencia is going to be so
- 2:13:12stacked. I'm sure.
- 2:13:15Is it? Cagelcha said.
- 2:13:16He was. Did he say Valencia Half or
- 2:13:19Valencia Marathon? But in his like post champs
- 2:13:23interview he he said he's going to the roads now.
- 2:13:26Yeah, he'll dominate. Ginny, Mark, another one.
- 2:13:29I feel for him a bit. And Centro.
- 2:13:32Oh, just in terms of I don't know if he's ever won a, has he
- 2:13:35won a global title? I feel like he's always there or
- 2:13:39there about such a gutsy runner. So I felt a bit habit for him
- 2:13:44getting silver. Yeah, it's almost like literally
- 2:13:46a silver line and like he can walk away and be like, yeah, OK,
- 2:13:48I've got another medal. But it wasn't that gold medal.
- 2:13:52Centro is running Chicago again. So he ran it last year, paced
- 2:13:56one of the the American women and ran 224, which is quite mad
- 2:14:01for just like a 1500 meter guy to just step up to the marathon
- 2:14:04for fun. And I heard him say he's now
- 2:14:08he's got three goals with it to run a new PB, then second goal
- 2:14:13to run sub 220 and like entirely optimistic goal of going sub
- 2:14:18218. So he must be taking it like
- 2:14:21semi seriously. I think sub 216 is the Olympic
- 2:14:28trials qualifier. I should just shoot for that.
- 2:14:30Imagine that like the meme out of Wolf of Wall Street, I'm not
- 2:14:33fucking leaving and I want to love this one.
- 2:14:38Did you see Fred Kelly's announced he's competing at the
- 2:14:41Enhanced Games? I'd say Bolt is quaking in his
- 2:14:45boots because if Fred Curl he gets to stop and still can't
- 2:14:50beat that record. You know what's coming.
- 2:14:53Yeah, I sort of in a way I respect it.
- 2:14:56Like he's got caught, so now he's just going all in and but
- 2:15:01there's no distance events in the in these enhanced games.
- 2:15:06Like they're actually full on happening in 2026.
- 2:15:08I think the bullshit like aren't they besides this?
- 2:15:11I know it's we're literally talking about it now, but I
- 2:15:14don't think we should give it any coverage otherwise.
- 2:15:18Do you think he breaks Bulls record?
- 2:15:20Nah, but like, what in his It was his whereabouts he got
- 2:15:28caught on the other week, wasn't it?
- 2:15:29It wasn't he like trying to deny that as well?
- 2:15:31And then he's turned around and going, OK, I'm just getting on
- 2:15:34the juice openly. Guys, if like that's like not
- 2:15:37showing up for work, you have to tell like 3.
- 2:15:40That's three times in a row. He doesn't say where he is or
- 2:15:43they show up and he's not where he says he is.
- 2:15:46Like it's bullshit. Like it's your job, show up.
- 2:15:49I heard another American sprinter given that excuse as
- 2:15:52well, where she had to run out somewhere.
- 2:15:54I don't care. Like you have to be there, it's
- 2:15:58your job. Like eh, good hard Rio
- 2:16:00Ferdinand. Wasn't he up to that back in the
- 2:16:02day? Dodging them.
- 2:16:04Was he? I'm sure there's some sort of
- 2:16:06story like that. Yeah.
- 2:16:08But yeah, Fred Kelly, what a plan.
- 2:16:11Pass. I don't know if in all the
- 2:16:14positivity of the Games you managed to think about any
- 2:16:17double troubles, but I did notice one that rattled me.
- 2:16:21So I was flicking between the BBC, like the British coverage
- 2:16:25and the Australian coverage. And for whichever night it was
- 2:16:30that Gout ran his 200m heath, I had the Australian broadcast on.
- 2:16:35And like, obviously he's insane. He's very young, he's got
- 2:16:39ridiculous potential but the way that they just hype him off was
- 2:16:45just like give the kid a break. Like the whole broadcast for
- 2:16:49hours on end was like 3 hours till Gout's race.
- 2:16:53The cut to the warm up track when he arrived, they cut back
- 2:16:56to the warm up track when he's putting his headphones on when
- 2:16:59he's doing a stride and it's just like Oh my God, you create
- 2:17:04such a like high pressure environment for him.
- 2:17:06It almost like elevates him before he can get there himself.
- 2:17:10So that like any achievement that he does go on to get is a
- 2:17:13bit like understated, like you need to just let him do his
- 2:17:17thing in the background. So it's to the point now where
- 2:17:20the whole country, non athletics fans entirely aware of him and
- 2:17:26they don't obviously understand kind of like how he's going to
- 2:17:30train and peek and take years and stuff to develop.
- 2:17:34So there's just going to be this expectation and focus on him
- 2:17:38from such an early age. Don't think it's very fair.
- 2:17:42And then like when he does runners Heath, he qualifies and
- 2:17:46the like analysis or interpretation of it was just a
- 2:17:50bit stupid because he didn't really run very well.
- 2:17:54He looked like a little bit stiff and you could tell that he
- 2:17:57was quite tense and stuff. But don't know, it just seems
- 2:18:00like there's a bit of an agenda with him and feel like he should
- 2:18:03just be given some space to just do his own thing.
- 2:18:06Yeah, I think there was a stat around.
- 2:18:08They normally send like 14-4 media people to the world
- 2:18:13champs. Australia does, but they sent 18
- 2:18:16and I think a lot of that was off the back of the fact that
- 2:18:19Gout Gout was going to be there. I think I don't know what he's
- 2:18:23doing in terms of media and engagement, but I mean, we saw
- 2:18:28it when we went down to the track for the national champs,
- 2:18:32didn't we? Like there were it few people
- 2:18:38bring it proud that are not, you know, athletics fans and I think
- 2:18:42he's one of them. And so I think the issue is, I
- 2:18:46mean, we had jumping tonight, the gold medal favour.
- 2:18:51I think she won gold, right, Uggers like our the high jumper
- 2:18:58and the amount of coverage that she would that she like.
- 2:19:01I mean she was going as a gold medal favourites, won a gold
- 2:19:03medal and she wouldn't have got anywhere near the media
- 2:19:06attention both prior to and for her performance.
- 2:19:10It all goes to gag out who probably who really didn't run
- 2:19:14sort of close to sort of his PB, right, like I think he's like a
- 2:19:1722nd guy, 20 flat and I think he ran like 20.3 and maybe he's
- 2:19:22heats and semi and semi final sort of didn't progress through.
- 2:19:25So like, yeah, I there's for for an athletics fan, it's not it's
- 2:19:30not anywhere near as exciting as what the best in the business in
- 2:19:36doing. But but I think for the
- 2:19:38mainstream media, it's what everyone's keen to know about.
- 2:19:42So it just gets way overhyped. Yeah, well, that's it.
- 2:19:44All the hype is one thing, but then the failure to kind of call
- 2:19:48it how it is is the other thing. But yeah, we'll we'll leave them
- 2:19:53alone. And what doesn't, what doesn't
- 2:19:55help them also is that, well, I mean, it helps him tremendously.
- 2:19:59I'm sure his training partner is Noah Lyles.
- 2:20:02Like he's literally playing apprentice to the best in the
- 2:20:05world and one of the best to ever do it.
- 2:20:07And it it should be seen as so like you should respect the
- 2:20:11relationship that Gout's the junior and he's the seasoned
- 2:20:14professional. But instead, like Australian
- 2:20:17media media getting the opportunity to ask Noah Lyles
- 2:20:20one question and they're asking him like, what do you think of
- 2:20:22Gout? He's probably thinking like,
- 2:20:24what the hell are you on about? Like I'm.
- 2:20:26Well done Olympic champion. Why you asking me about this 17
- 2:20:29year old kid? But anyway, I think that wraps
- 2:20:33us off. Any last thoughts?
- 2:20:36No, roll on. Well, LA should be warmed the
- 2:20:39Olympics in LA, so that will make it an interesting but with
- 2:20:44a few more bigger and championships before then.
- 2:20:48But yeah, no, it's really good. Well, good looking getting your
- 2:20:51treadmill repaired. Well, they said they'd replace
- 2:20:54it. It's just I don't know when it's
- 2:20:55going to happen. So I'm going to keep the
- 2:20:56pressure on them. But yeah, like, even the weather
- 2:21:02is getting so bad here. Like it was literally the summer
- 2:21:05shine in there and trying to get a washed on now is a big
- 2:21:09problem. Like in Australia.
- 2:21:11In Australia, you can literally leave your clothes out overnight
- 2:21:14and they dry here. Like one minute it's sunny and
- 2:21:18the next minute it's like thunderstorm.
- 2:21:20So I had to literally run out there and get the wash in
- 2:21:23because it just doesn't dry. Yeah.
- 2:21:26Well we saw it all so can vouch for that.
- 2:21:29So nice job. And how about you over the next
- 2:21:34week, Dean, any run physical? Run, I see the physio during the
- 2:21:38week, so I'll sort of get an indication of what I can do.
- 2:21:41I've been, I was on the elliptical last week, so putting
- 2:21:46a bit more like throat sort of struggled to get the high rate
- 2:21:48up too high on that, but gave it a go.
- 2:21:51So. Yeah, so hard to get the hurry
- 2:21:54up on the elliptical. Was that some somewhat
- 2:21:58reassuring that you've still got some fitness lying around or
- 2:22:01just. Not really.
- 2:22:02I think it's I think it's just a concern that I'm not very good
- 2:22:05on the elliptical or it's not great at like I said, as I jump
- 2:22:10on the bike, the heart rate rate was high.
- 2:22:12So no fitness is definitely not there, but that's fine.
- 2:22:16I'll I did a decent amount last week.
- 2:22:18I sort of enjoyed it. So I'll try and do the same this
- 2:22:21week. Who?
- 2:22:22Ryan, do you have any update? Not really.
- 2:22:27It seems like that I was getting a bit of positive seeing that I
- 2:22:30thought I would be able to start loading it up again.
- 2:22:33But then now that like all these cats, cats just spill water
- 2:22:38everywhere now, Now that the ion toe treatment is kind of worn
- 2:22:44off, the doctor seems to tell me that that essentially just
- 2:22:47settles the pain and allows you to start like loading it again.
- 2:22:50And then it seems to have resumed to being uncomfortable
- 2:22:53again. So I'm just, I feel like I'm
- 2:22:55back to square 1 and I'm four months down the line.
- 2:22:58So I'm in with Steve myself next week to try and formulate some
- 2:23:03sort of a plan. Ironically, one of the guys who
- 2:23:06I was having a beer with last night was a doctor and he had a
- 2:23:09look, not that I'm going to take medical advice over a pint, but
- 2:23:14he he was asking me about it and he said let me have a look at
- 2:23:17your scan. Is this the same guy that was
- 2:23:21playing crocodiles? And stuff it was.
- 2:23:25There was a wide variety of backgrounds in this room,
- 2:23:28clearly. But this guy said definitely
- 2:23:34don't get surgery if you can avoid it.
- 2:23:37Like that's the last last resort.
- 2:23:40So this PRP thing sounds increasingly more like an
- 2:23:44option, although it's meant to be incredibly uncomfortable and
- 2:23:47painful. No pain, no gain.
- 2:23:51Well, that's it. But yeah, cross training volume
- 2:23:54is all I've now got Dean to compete with and keep me honest
- 2:24:00and that he's obviously going to be doing about 15 hours a week,
- 2:24:03so I feel like I need to be doing something similar, so
- 2:24:06that's good. If you if you want to know
- 2:24:08something about cross training look up this guy called Caleb
- 2:24:11Laker from Melbourne. He does like guys.
- 2:24:17I'm on about like 18 hours of elliptical along with like 21
- 2:24:21hours of cycling. It's nuts.
- 2:24:23Give him a look. And is he still doing it now?
- 2:24:25He's still injured. He's no, he's slowly
- 2:24:28transitioning into running, but yeah, the hours he puts in is
- 2:24:34mind blowing. Like he has to be the most
- 2:24:38aerobicy for person on the planet right now.
- 2:24:42Mentality monster as well to be able to mentally get through it
- 2:24:46all. He's completed Netflix like 100%
- 2:24:49on YouTube and Google. All right then, I think me and
- 2:24:52Dean need to get to bed there. I'm going to have dinner.
- 2:24:56Go on. Thanks fellas.
- 2:24:59See you guys. Good luck.
- 2:25:00See you. The.
- 2:26:47Music.
