- 0:23This is Deep Dive into Joy, and I'm your host,
- 0:27Gina Rickner. Hey, Joy listeners, it's your host,
- 0:30Gina Rickner. Welcome back to Deep Dive into
- 0:33Joy, the podcast where we talk about our testimonies,
- 0:37our everyday life, health and wellness, and how
- 0:40God shows up in the midst of our pain. I want
- 0:43you all to know that you are not alone. Before
- 0:46we dive into this episode, I want to pause and
- 0:48tell you about today's sponsor, and that is Active
- 0:52Skin Repair. They are one of my favorite shops
- 0:55that I sponsor. They're just my go -to shop.
- 1:00Just replaces everything in your medicine cabinet
- 1:04when it comes to skin and needing repair. So
- 1:10this is a medical grade treatment that works
- 1:12for everyday wound care and skin repair, including
- 1:16things like cuts, scrapes, sunburns, normal burns,
- 1:20chafing, rashes. razor burn, insect bites. I
- 1:25even carry it along with me. You can even use
- 1:26it as like a hand sanitizer. So you can also
- 1:30use this formula on pets. If you spray it on
- 1:33the bottom with their little toe beans, it's
- 1:35going to give them some extra hydration and things
- 1:41like allergic reactions. I know a lot of dogs
- 1:44have just some allergic things that go on with
- 1:47them, scrapes on your pets. So they also have
- 1:51a baby formula and a kid's formula along with
- 1:55things like their gel, which is a little bit
- 1:58thicker than their spray. I absolutely love their
- 2:01gel. They have sunscreen and their hydrating
- 2:04lip balm that I use. So I carry this spray everywhere
- 2:07we go. It's good. You can put it in your diaper
- 2:10bag, the car, your beach bag and your home literally
- 2:13everywhere you go. So this magic solution, it
- 2:17contains a naturally occurring acid that your
- 2:20body already creates to support healing and it's
- 2:24hospital grade. So they do use this in hospitals
- 2:27as well. So it's clinically proven, like I said,
- 2:32used in hospitals for decades, and it's the first
- 2:34non -toxic hypoallergenic treatment for your
- 2:37skin. So you're going to visit my link at shop.
- 2:43BLDG Active dot com slash deep dive. That's all
- 2:46capital. And you're going to get 10 percent off
- 2:48your order. I'll list the link in the show notes
- 2:51so it's easier for you to find. So if you have
- 2:56been with us through this season, it's not just
- 3:00the end of a teaching series. We have hit our
- 3:03last episode. So this is episode 10. This is
- 3:08ascending. We have talked about sanctification
- 3:12being set apart, refined, surrendered, shaped,
- 3:16and transformed, but sanctification was never
- 3:19meant to stay theatrical. So holiness is not
- 3:23something that we study. It's something that
- 3:26we use and we walk it out. And on today's episode,
- 3:30this one's, you know, it's going to be about
- 3:32truth. God finishes what he starts. So I want
- 3:37to welcome Bobby back to the podcast on our last
- 3:41episode of the season. It's been an absolute
- 3:44pleasure to have her on with me. And I never
- 3:48want, you know, these to come to an end. I love
- 3:50them so much. I love having my guests on and
- 3:52talking to them and just having their perspective
- 3:55on things, giving us the truth of God. So I hope
- 3:59to have her back on the near future. But right
- 4:01now, let's just welcome back Bobby Johnson to
- 4:04the podcast. Abby, I want to welcome you back
- 4:08to the last episode of the season. Good to be
- 4:11here. Thanks for having me. This was fun. It's
- 4:14been an absolute pleasure to have you with me
- 4:16and I really don't want to see them come to an
- 4:18end, but here we are. Me either. And I'll tell
- 4:21you, like I said, it has just been, it's been
- 4:24good to dive into the different topics and stuff
- 4:28and do this with you. So thank you again. So
- 4:31we're going to dive right into this one and So
- 4:35like we said in the past episodes, God is the
- 4:38one who sanctifies. So let's return to the verse
- 4:42that has quietly carried us this season, and
- 4:44that was 1 Thessalonians 5, 23 through 24. Make
- 4:50God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through
- 4:53and through. The one who calls you is faithful
- 4:57and he will do it. So make sure you read that
- 4:59again. He will do it. Your sanctification does
- 5:03not depend on your discipline alone. It rests
- 5:07on God's faithfulness. You may feel unfinished
- 5:11and consistent or weary, but God is not intimidated
- 5:16by your process. So from striving to abiding,
- 5:21you stop striving to be holy and you start abiding
- 5:24in Christ. Jesus says, remain in me. and I also
- 5:29remain in you." That comes from John at 15 -4.
- 5:33So holiness is the fruit of closeness, not effort.
- 5:36When you abide, conviction becomes clarity, obedience
- 5:41becomes love, repentance becomes a relief, holiness
- 5:45becomes natural, not forced. So a sanctified
- 5:50life is not a tense one, it's a rooted one. So
- 5:54be rooted in Christ. He is the vine, and we are
- 5:58the branches, and we definitely need pruning.
- 6:01Bobby, what do you have to add for us? Well,
- 6:03I know we've talked a lot on a couple different
- 6:06episodes about this whole idea of pruning and
- 6:08all the things that we go through, but it made
- 6:10me think of, and again, I'm always throwing out
- 6:13these book things because I'm such a book nerd,
- 6:16but, and I think I mentioned this in the last
- 6:18episode, John Comer, who's a pastor, and he's
- 6:21the author of many books, but one in particular
- 6:25that I'm referencing here is called Practicing
- 6:27the Way. He sets a starting line here in this
- 6:33topic where he says Jesus not only gave his disciples
- 6:36a promise, but he gave them a practice. Comer
- 6:40says that Jesus basically gave a quote -unquote
- 6:43tutorial on how to be with him. He calls it Jesus'
- 6:49model of spiritual formation. Jesus is the vine,
- 6:55and we as his apprentices are the branches. But
- 7:00then he said, remain or abide in me, like you
- 7:05mentioned. And the Greek word there, and I'm
- 7:08probably gonna butcher it. I think it's meno
- 7:11or me -no. Either way, that's the root word that
- 7:15he's using there. It actually means make your
- 7:19home in. or dwell. In this teaching, Jesus actually
- 7:25uses this term in this whole teaching here 10
- 7:29times. His point, basically Comer says, is this,
- 7:35that make your home in my presence by the Spirit
- 7:38and never leave. That's what he wants from us.
- 7:43Again, Comer makes another great point. Jesus
- 7:46isn't asking us to do something we're not already
- 7:49doing because we could, you know, our listeners
- 7:51could be hearing this and be like, even through
- 7:54this series, like, yeah, but there's always these
- 7:59yeah, but you know, because we all do that. He
- 8:03isn't asking us to do something we're not already
- 8:05doing. All of us are already abiding in something.
- 8:13Right. So it's not really about. Are we abiding?
- 8:17I mean, the reality is we are in the day to day
- 8:20abiding in something, but instead Comer notes
- 8:24that what the question should be, what are we
- 8:27abiding in? And Jesus says, you need to abide
- 8:30in me. And when we're rooted in or dwelling within
- 8:36the spirit, as the word says, our lives will
- 8:39bear the fruit of that spirit. And as we've said
- 8:42before, that fruit is an outcome. it's not the
- 8:46it's not the goal it's not what we're striving
- 8:49as you're saying striving to do it ends up becoming
- 8:53the outcome of dwelling in him i thought that
- 8:59was cool and and again that book giving a shout
- 9:03out for it it's a good read so i have a book
- 9:06to share with you after this maybe i'll do a
- 9:10podcast episode on it but there you go there's
- 9:13there's a podcast idea in different book reviews
- 9:15that's pretty neat so what changes when you live
- 9:19sanctified a fully sanctified life looks different
- 9:23so here's what changes you stop asking am i enough
- 9:28and how many times have we all have asked that
- 9:31because you know who you belong to and if you
- 9:35didn't know and first corinthians 6 19 through
- 9:3820 it tells us you are not your own You are bought
- 9:42with a price. So another change is that you still
- 9:45feel deeply, but you don't react impulsively.
- 9:50And you don't crave what once controlled you.
- 9:54That's sanctification at work. So this doesn't
- 9:58mean we're never going to struggle, grieve, wrestle,
- 10:01or fail. Paul himself, not that I have already
- 10:05obtained all this, but I press on. That comes
- 10:08from Philippians 312. It doesn't remove your
- 10:13humanity, it redeems it. And grace doesn't disappear
- 10:17as you mature, it deepens. So we're sanctified
- 10:22for purpose and this is crucial. God doesn't
- 10:25sanctify people so they can isolate themselves.
- 10:28He sanctifies people so they can love well. And
- 10:32in John 17, Jesus prayed, as you sent me into
- 10:36the world, I have sent them into the world. You
- 10:40are set apart. A sanctified life reflects Christ
- 10:44in ordinary spaces, carries peace into chaos,
- 10:48and it speaks truth without arrogance, and loves
- 10:52without compromise. This is daily posture. Daily
- 10:57surrender sounds heavy until you realize surrender
- 11:00is what keeps you free. You don't lose yourself
- 11:03in God, you find yourself. So what do you have
- 11:06for this part, Bobby? Excuse me. Well, I love
- 11:10the prayer that Jesus prayed in John 17 and you
- 11:14reference John 17 18 and I would just say back
- 11:17up one verse When you go back to that one verse
- 11:21before in 17 17 He says he prays make them holy
- 11:27by your truth Teach them your word, which is
- 11:31truth. So in that and as he continues in that
- 11:34prayer Jesus asked his father to sanctify his
- 11:38disciples. He didn't ask them to sanctify themselves.
- 11:42He didn't say, hey, get it together, right? He
- 11:47didn't give them a list of to do's or whatever.
- 11:50He prayed in that to ask the father to sanctify
- 11:53them. So you point out like things that I don't
- 11:57even notice. Like I love that you added that
- 12:01to it because there's just some things that like
- 12:04speaks to people more, you know what I mean?
- 12:06But see, that goes back to your point of like,
- 12:09God does it. The Holy Spirit does the work in
- 12:12sanctification. I mean, believers participate
- 12:16in the life of Jesus, right? Because we're called,
- 12:20and I reference Comer's work of practicing the
- 12:23way, and in that he likens us to apprentices,
- 12:26which I've mentioned, I know, a couple times
- 12:28through the season. And that's really what we
- 12:30are as believers is, is we're apprentices. We
- 12:34are learning the way of Jesus to live in this
- 12:38world. We're never going to be him. We're never
- 12:41going to reach the point where we are an exact
- 12:45model of the model for us. I wish. Well, in glory.
- 12:54But believers do participate in the life of Jesus,
- 12:58which goes back then To John 15 1 through 11
- 13:02what you also reference about him being the vine
- 13:04and we are the branches So we're all we're all
- 13:09We're linked were to be linked connected to him
- 13:16So and I love that prayer in in John 17. Yeah
- 13:20So if you remember anything from this season,
- 13:24I want you to remember this sanctification is
- 13:27God's love at working you Let's repeat it again.
- 13:30You're not behind, not disqualified. You're not
- 13:34almost totally. You're being made whole. Bobby,
- 13:37is there anything that you want to close out
- 13:39this season with? You have the floor. It's all
- 13:42yours. That could be dangerous now. I'm just
- 13:47so glad that this was... large focus of this
- 13:51season and that I could be a part of that because
- 13:55it's an exciting thing to learn about and walk
- 13:57through and and and tear apart to understand
- 14:01and I think in our modern American culture today
- 14:07holiness this whole concept of holiness first
- 14:11of all is very counterculture but it appears
- 14:16to people in general, I would say, and I actually
- 14:21read this in one of my textbooks, to be gray
- 14:25and boring. But in reality, it is to be a vibrant,
- 14:32beautiful, fruitful life. It is to be something
- 14:38that as we live it, it draws people, we not only
- 14:43draw closer to Christ, But it's to draw other
- 14:47people right and to show that in our times with
- 14:50the fruit of the spirit Exactly. Yeah, absolutely
- 14:53Which then goes back to relationship right and
- 14:57all of that But in generally I think in the church
- 15:02today the challenge becomes Teaching others about
- 15:06sanctification and I know early on in the season
- 15:09we touched on that Because I think you yourself
- 15:13had even said like we don't We don't necessarily
- 15:17hear about it, although I think to the challenge
- 15:21from the front, the challenge from the pulpit,
- 15:26is how do we preach about that? difficult for
- 15:40you to figure out how to do it. Yeah, and I don't
- 15:42have an extensive experience in that. You know,
- 15:44I've only given a message a couple times and
- 15:47I'm still learning. I still haven't even finished
- 15:49my homiletics class, so it's like flying the
- 15:53plane while you're building it, you know what
- 15:54I mean? So definitely lots to learn on my end,
- 15:58but I did just, I don't have this in my notes
- 16:01even, but as I'm talking, one of the things,
- 16:06one of the, we didn't have to read this book,
- 16:10but it was referenced and I had an assignment
- 16:13on it like the gist of it and it's a book from
- 16:16like the 1970s called Between Two Worlds and
- 16:21John Stott, I believe is the author of it, but
- 16:25it's on preaching and the whole idea is that
- 16:31a pastor's job from the pulpit is to make a connection
- 16:38between two worlds the world we live in and the
- 16:45kingdom of heaven and and making a connection
- 16:48between what the word says and To make a connection
- 16:54for people's lives. I mean Jesus ultimately is
- 16:57the bridge. We know that that's you know, but
- 17:01but to aid in making that connection so people
- 17:04can see and so when you talk about The topic
- 17:07of sanctification—I mean just that word—a lot
- 17:12of people, even within the Church, people don't
- 17:17have a solid understanding. I would say I didn't
- 17:19have a—for years didn't have a solid understanding
- 17:22of what that meant. In fact, I had a very skewed
- 17:26understanding of what that meant. But you know,
- 17:37I mean, so within the church, you know, there
- 17:40becomes this challenge of teaching others about
- 17:43sanctification so that they can see that a holy
- 17:49life, holiness, that being set apart from, because
- 17:53that's what it means, is really vibrant and beautiful.
- 17:59And honestly, it's contagious, you know, in terms
- 18:04of... relationship with others but we do tend
- 18:09to focus on the other thing is we tend to focus
- 18:12on evangelism and that's really good right we
- 18:16and what I mean by that is you know we're reaching
- 18:19out to others for to a lost world with the message
- 18:23of hope the good news of Jesus Christ we absolutely
- 18:28need to do that we're called to do that but we
- 18:32can't ignore discipleship and the intent of growing
- 18:39in Christ. And again, this has been a point that
- 18:43you've brought up numerous times through the
- 18:44season. That's what I think led you to, the way
- 18:48I understood it, led you to doing this as a topic,
- 18:51right? And Dallas Willard said that the most
- 18:58successful work of outreach would be the work
- 19:02of in -reach. that turns people wherever they
- 19:06are into the lights of a darkened world. Because
- 19:12it's one thing to bring people to Christ and
- 19:16share that message of hope and get them to salvation,
- 19:20or at least, I mean, it's not our job to do that,
- 19:21the Holy Spirit does that, but to present the
- 19:26message, to evangelize, right? But what happens
- 19:29after that? Actually, Comer made a really cool
- 19:34point in his book, Practicing the Way, about
- 19:38going back to the vine and the branches. And
- 19:42he said, and I thought about it, actually, I
- 19:44was just driving here. Again, I didn't have it
- 19:46in my notes, but as I was driving. That's the
- 19:47Holy Spirit. It was so good because he said,
- 19:52in order for a vine to thrive, you need a trellis.
- 20:00You need a support, right? And I thought about
- 20:04that on the way over, and I thought, I should
- 20:06have made a couple notes about that, but now
- 20:08it's something I'm thinking about. Thank you,
- 20:09thank you, Lord. But that discipleship, that
- 20:16relationship with other people and walking the
- 20:20way with them, that's a trellis. That's like
- 20:27a way for us to. That's a support, and it's all
- 20:31the things that we've talked about, the spiritual
- 20:33disciplines, the time in prayer, the time in
- 20:36God's word, fasting, meditation on his word,
- 20:41being in community, worshiping, all of those
- 20:43things, those become, I guess, I'll say, if that
- 20:50makes sense, like a trellis for that vine and
- 20:54its branches so that it can produce fruit. So
- 20:56I thought that was kind of cool, that analogy
- 20:57that he made. Um, and I think, you know, again,
- 21:02you know, we can't forget about that piece. You
- 21:06can't just drop off, you know, um, we want to
- 21:12come and, and we, as, as believers, it should
- 21:17be our heart's desire to wrap around those people.
- 21:21And that's not easy. It's just because that gets
- 21:26messy, right? And we don't like messy. We like
- 21:33nice, neat, you know, check off the boxes and
- 21:39we just do this. I mean, that's just the way
- 21:41I think. And again, that's a broad statement
- 21:46to make for the church today, and maybe pretty
- 21:49bold of me to say that, but. I feel like we have
- 21:53to be bold sometimes. Yeah, and I mean, I can
- 21:56say, I mean, just for my own self, like been
- 21:59there, you know? It is a lot easier, just do
- 22:03your thing, you know? And just do your thing.
- 22:10But if we do it in isolation, we're not, it's
- 22:14just, we need to be a light on a hill. And I
- 22:20liked what Dallas Willard said there about doing
- 22:23the in -reach. Outreach is great, and we should
- 22:28be doing that, but we can't forget about that
- 22:32discipleship piece and the support that people
- 22:35need to grow. Christ and to help each other along
- 22:41because we do learn from each other and So yeah,
- 22:47so that's that's the last thing I Would just
- 22:50share I Mean, that's ultimately that's what we're
- 22:54called to do. Yeah so hopefully through this
- 22:57season people have heard things that we've said
- 23:00and and related to the struggles and and aren't
- 23:07you know Not not even just not willing to give
- 23:10up but to get started. Yeah to say that yes Yeah,
- 23:16yeah that And that starts with surrender But
- 23:22that's that's a letting go and a very difficult
- 23:26thing to do. Yeah Well, I really hate to see
- 23:31this come to an end Bobby, this time that we've
- 23:35had together, I loved it so much. I've learned
- 23:37so much from you. I've learned a lot, too. And
- 23:40I've just it's just a blessing to be a part of
- 23:43it and and the preparation and diving into things
- 23:47and learning. I mean, just and it's just been
- 23:51great. So thank you so much. So I just want to
