- Sam: What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to the Honey It Saturday podcast. My name is Sam Grant. I got Mitch Williams over here in the cowboy hat in honor of John Sumral. Gators went into Austin yesterday. John Sumerall got his first cowboy hat from the Longhorns and walked out of there with the win. just an amazing day of college football yesterday. Upsets all over the country. I'm obviously repping my Tennessee jersey. We've kind of put a beat down on the on the Crimson Tine yesterday. So Just it's every week is just any given week. Nobody knows what's gonna happen. And I think I kind of love it. It's it's a ton Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, I mean I Sam: of chaos, but I I'm I'm I love it. Honey It's Saturday: I absolutely I mean if you love college football, you love the chaos. Like this is what we I mean, obviously we're in it for our fandoms and other reasons too, but like this is what we love about the sport. This is great. It's everything you want to see in a weekend. We had the most top eight teams lose in a week ever this weekend, which Sam: Mm. Honey It's Saturday: was pretty nuts because I mean some of those matchups maybe you could see it happening, especially India and Ohio State, somebody's gonna lose. But then you've got like Florida. taking down Texas. Who saw that coming? You got Florida State taking Miami to the absolute wire. You got Georgia going down to Auburn. Like I mean, it was an absolutely ridiculous week of college football. I can't wait to break it down e even more. But yeah, shout out Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: John Summerall, first time coaching at DKR in Austin and they they always hand a a head coach a a hat. So that was why he walked out in a hat. People try to make it a big deal that he was making fun of Texas. He wasn't. That's a that's a tradition that they do. But I just I had to rep the hat 'cause I you know, it's on my mind. And I'm a Texan. I'm a Texan Sam: A really cool tradition, might I add. Honey It's Saturday: too. So like it is what it is. Sam: Yeah. But hey, you know what? If if you go down there and get your first hat and a first win, that's hard to beat. I I didn't know Texas did that. I think that's incredibly cool. I don't know why this is the first time I've hearing about it, but that is a great gesture to provide to any any other guest that's coming into that stadium. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. I I'll give it to him. That's pretty cool. Sam: But this I think all this chaos talk within college football is a great segue into our first segment tonight, which is the the up and coming world-renowned Honey It's Saturday top 25 poll. And Honey It's Saturday: It's the only poll that matters. We've been saying it. Sam: that's right. I mean, there's there's some other poll. I think it's called the PA. Is that right? The PA poll? Or is it maybe it's AP, I don't know, something like that. But Honey It's Saturday: Something along those lines. Yeah. The associate yeah. Associated peanut gallery. I don't Sam: Yeah, just a lot of people that don't watch ball and put numbers in a list of one to twenty-five. So I digress. But let's start with our top five, Mitch. I'll let you go ahead and read those off and we'll kind of get a little d debrief. Honey It's Saturday: All right, let's get into it. We've got Miami taking the number one spot by a hair. And I mean by a hair from both our ranking perspective and the way that they won on Saturday. But Miami takes a top spot. We got BYU up to number two in the country after beating the number two team in the country. So props to them. Ohio State's at three. Ole Miss is at four. And Indiana is at five. So that's what we got in our top five. Sam: It's it's a lot different. Honey It's Saturday: What are we I mean it's a lot different. Like you've got an Ohio State team with a law you got a lot of teams with losses in here, pretty much everyone except for the top two. So I mean we're Sam: Yeah. I mean Honey It's Saturday: we're at the point in the year there are not very many undefeated teams. That's just kind of the way it is. Sam: No, there is a after you kind of read that first five, I feel like I just had to take it a second to like readjust my eyes and look at it, be like, wow, BYU is the number two team in the country. Like, no, you can't Honey It's Saturday: And you can't you can't argue with it. It Sam: at all, but it's like it's been a long time. Like I know BYU's had some dominant years back back before I think you and I were even born. They've been relatively good throughout us growing up, but to see them at the number two ranking is kind of wild to me. Honey It's Saturday: I mean, good for them. Good for that program. That was a massive win for them last night. Steve Young, by the way. Shout out Steve Young, guest picker on college game day. He went ten and on his picks. Sam: Did he really? Honey It's Saturday: On a day that was just absolute chaos in college football, he was completely unfazed, went ten and Sam: I didn't know he went ten and Wow. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Pretty pretty ridiculous stuff. I mean, it was just their day. Like it was BYU's day from the get-go. The kicker, the Sam: Yeah. No, I agree. Honey It's Saturday: kid on on game day got two million dollars from the kick. Like, unbelievable. Which, I mean, look, I Sam: Yeah, great atmosphere, cool, cool game. Honey It's Saturday: I love that segment. I'm getting this is a little bit of a I'm getting this off track, but dude, like I'm all for charity. I'm all for supporting college kids. I'm all for fun. But man, like Watching week after week these kids take home millions of dollars, like man kinda hurts. Like that segment wasn't around when we were in school, you know? Like my life could be completely different. This podcast, we could have all the tricks we possibly want if I got that million dollars. Sam: Do you ever ask like where does this money come from? Honey It's Saturday: Nah, some questions don't need to be asked. I mean, I it Sam: Ha ha. Honey It's Saturday: it's not coming straight out of Pat's pocket. I know that. Sam: No, I know. I just think about like like golf tournaments. If you have like a hole in one contest and there's like hole in one insurance, like I wonder if they have that like field goal kicking insurance because of college game day. And they're they're their payments gonna be pretty high if if it keeps going like this. Honey It's Saturday: Well, and I'll tell you what. I I tell you what, I I work in the insurance industry on the side. That's my day job. I highly doubt anyone's writing that policy. You know why? 'Cause every week Pat's like, yeah, you could try again. Like, you were you Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: were close enough, ain't no way. He's given too many second chances for an insurance company to to write that risk. Sam: That's fair. I love how you're like insurance is on the side for me. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, there's that that is what it is. So but I'm just saying and we probably should get into the rest of our top twenty five because it's gonna be a very interesting breakdown. So at six we got Georgia, who did take an L to Auburn this week, which is crazy. But they fell from number one to six. We got Tennessee at seven on a little bit of a climb. Their only loss is to Texas at home in a close game. That Texas loss is looking a little bit more iffy by the day, but their wins are also looking better by the day. They they played really well this week against Bama, so that was huge. Texas Tech is at eight. They're unblemished. One of those teams that has not been beaten to this point in the year. Also, their resume looks a little bit better by the day as well. If Houston keeps winning, that's kind of the staple of their resume right now. Notre Dame. Oregon State too. Sam: Hey, Oregon Oregon State win too. That win keeps looking better too. Honey It's Saturday: Which by the way is also on Houston's resume. So that win for Sam: That's true. Honey It's Saturday: both of them is starting to look a little bit better. Texas Tex at eight, Notre Dame fell to nine. Quality loss, BYU's at two in the country, came down to the absolute last play. Actually, Notre Dame didn't really get their last play, but that we'll talk about that later. Notre Dame's at nine, and then Kentucky is at ten. Sam: Yeah, honestly I'm I'm good with that those. I mean, I think Georgia dropping to where they did is appropriate. That was probably Gunnar Stockton's worst game as a Georgia Bulldog. Auburn just came to play. I mean, I think Georgia's still a really good football team, but just just dropped one, I think, off the high of the Alabama win in Tuscaloosa last week. Tennessee, I think pretty significant jump, but was deserved. Texas Tech, they're still just there. Like I I still feel like I need to see Honey It's Saturday: They Sam: something from them. Honey It's Saturday: they did handle business this week. I mean, they won by like thirty. Sam: Yeah, but I don't know. I need to see I just I need to see it. I'm Honey It's Saturday: I think this week Sam: not sold on Bowman. Honey It's Saturday: I think this week was the first time I've watched them and been like, okay, their offense looks like they know what they're doing. Their defense is is getting better week by week, and I'm not super concerned about their defense, but their offense had a lot of questions, question marks for me. This week was the first time I've watched them be like that was a a put together performance. But yes, Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: I agree. I agree. But they're unblemished, so they're sitting there eight. And then Kentucky, man, the ten spot, big win. Oklahoma. Sam: Those boys are playing really good football. And I mean, I think everybody thought after that big one against LSU, going into Norman, I mean Oklahoma was favored I think by six and a half, seven and a half. And Oklahoma went in or Kentucky went in and just handled business on the road, tough Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, but Sam: spot. Honey It's Saturday: I believe John Mateer threw four interceptions. Sam: Back to your typical John Matthear. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, I mean, dude, that's just we don't need to talk about Oklahoma very much. But yeah, that's just tough. But good for Kentucky. They got the win. It's a weird one because they're they're just winning football games. They're not blowing you away. I mean, they went to overtime at South Carolina. Overtime win against LSU. Both good wins, but I mean it's not like they're separating themselves and then they grind it out and get two critical turnovers in the last couple of minutes of that Oklahoma game and get a win on the road. So continue to Continue to win and they'll keep climbing. before Sam: they have some really good players, but I think that's kind of what makes them a really good team right now is they don't have like superstar receiver they gotta feed the football or star running back. It's just it's just eleven guys being in sync on every single play, going to play ball. So I love it. Honey It's Saturday: I I mean Oklahoma's defense, like, dude, you gotta feel for They actually outgained Kentucky by a hundred thirty yards. And they lost. Like at Sam: Yeah. Oklahoma Oklahoma's defense is just like they're I I feel so bad for them. Honey It's Saturday: You're just that's just tough. Anyways, 11. We got the UCLA Bruins. Could they be this year's Indiana? I don't know. The streets are talking. We got number 12, Utah, number 13, Houston, number 14, Iowa. The Hawkeyes slide in there at 14. And then Wake Forest from the ACC jumping to 15. That's big for Sam. Sam: Yes, that is big for me that I will get into a little bit later. this is a again, I think UCLA's there to stay. Defensively, like just a really good game plan for Wisconsin this past weekend. Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: No Nico, no problem this week. Sam: I mean, they I they may not even need a quarterback. Just run the football and they'll be all right. no, I think their quarterback's gonna get better as the season goes on, but still losing Nico was a big loss. Utah's got a big one this week against Houston. And then Houston had a big one against Oklahoma State this past weekend, which was a great win for them. Good resume builder. I think this Big Twelve race is gonna be fascinating to watch as the season goes on. Honey It's Saturday: There are probably five or six teams that are legitimately in the hunt for the Big Twelve this year, which is awesome because the last couple of years it's kind of been like who's at the top? And then the separation was very wide between those tiers. So I don't know. The Big Twelve seems like they've they've leveled up their game this year so far. Obviously that BYU win was a huge staple, like non conference win for not just BYU, but for the conference as a whole. So hopefully they can keep that up, but it's very interesting. Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: I agree with you. Yeah, and Wake Forest is just sneakily playing really good football the A C C. Sam: Yeah. And I was just lingering around the Big Ten. Like they don't have a really tough Honey It's Saturday: Same thing. Sam: Big Ten schedule, but they're they're w they win the games they're supposed to win. So Honey It's Saturday: You could very well with their remaining schedule, you could very well see them in that Big Ten Championship game. Sam: yeah, one thousand percent. Honey It's Saturday: Yep. So that's what we got one through fifteen. We've got Alabama at sixteen. So they fall all the way to sixteen. They've got back-to-back losses. USC, seventeen, Florida back in the rankings. And not just back in the rankings, but all the way up at eighteen. Because there are two wins on that resume. It's hard to argue with them. Even though those losses are there, those two wins are huge wins. So Florida's at 18. LSU is at nineteen. And then Missouri falls to twenty after their beat down. They suffered this week. Sam: Yeah, that's just a a blend of two or three SEC teams or four SEC teams that have two losses. And these are all teams that I think more specifically LSU and Alabama, who you'd say, hey, they were probably gonna be in the playoff earlier this year. And you got Missouri now and Florida now, who have maybe caught some people up by surprise, but there's I mean, they're all sitting there with two losses. So like I'll be very excited to see how all of these teams respond. Just because I mean, every every week is essentially like a playoff eliminator at this point. Honey It's Saturday: I mean, it's so crazy the cannibalism in the SEC already, and we're only halfway through the year. Like, Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: I think it's gonna get ugly by the end of the season. But Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: it's very entertaining. So we'll see. And by the way, I just want to say this now. People who are using this week as the reason, like the justification for the twenty fourteen playoff, it's just so ridiculous to me for a a a lot of different reasons, but like We we haven't talked about the 2014 playoff on this podcast yet. We really need to. I'm not for it. I don't think Sam's for it. I don't think this is Sam: Mm. Honey It's Saturday: a decision made with the fans in mind, with the players in mind. I think it was a selfish decision made for other motives by people who don't really have their heart in the sport the same way we do. And so I just think people who are like, well, look how many top-tier teams lost this. That's great. But the the main issue isn't with competitiveness is with urgency on regular season games. And I don't think people realize with a 2014 playoff, a week this chaotic, yeah, it's still kind of entertaining. But like the urgency that we feel on these games and these losses is not there. Like a four and two SEC team at this point in the year in a 2014 playoff is way less concerned about those losses than a four and two SEC team with a 12 team playoff. Because those losses matter a whole lot more. So I just I don't want people to take this week and be like, look, 2014's is perfect. You know? I don't I don't want to hear that. Sam: Yeah. And I I don't think anybody would say that. Like I think any of our our listeners or even people who listen to other college football podcasts, like I think Game Day brought it up on Saturday and like the entire crowd booed. Like that's a that's the nature of college football right now, where the entire, I guess, group that absorbs college football and takes it in and loves it for the sport that it is, just does not like it. And it's the people in charge Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, Sam: who are all about it. Honey It's Saturday: and full credit to the ESPN guys at game day too, by the way, because they didn't really back down from sharing their negative thoughts, which I was, you know, ESPN's kind of the company that's making this contract, this deal directly with the CFP. So you'd kind of think they'd give Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: them a script and be like, Hey, hit these positive talking points. They really didn't do that. I mean, it was pretty much all five of them shared their negative thoughts on it. So credit to them. All right. We got sidetracked. We do have to finish our top twenty five. Texas at twenty one. So they fall. All the way to 21. Oklahoma State slipped slightly to 22 after that really tight loss at Houston. That was a great game, by the way. Boise State at 23, Northwestern at 24, Holden Strong and SMU still ranked in our Paul at twenty-five. I don't think there's a ton of talking points there. our first teams out, if you guys are interested, are Arizona this week, Auburn, who's four and two with obviously a win over the number one team in the country, and then Oregon. So those are our first three teams out right now. Sam: Yeah. I I will wanna make one one comment. I know we've we'll we'll kinda go through some of our like biggest differences and changes, but Boise State sitting right there at twenty three, they are kind of at the the leaderboard when it comes to that group of f or group of six team that's gonna make it into the playoff. But James Madison is still undefeated. UTSA, your playoff pick or from the re from the preseason, they look really good. So it'll just be interesting to see. True. Honey It's Saturday: Yep. Yep. North Dakota State looks pretty good too. They've got one loss, but they've looked pretty good thus far. So I think that G six spot is not a runaway for Boise, but I think if I had to pick right now, that's who I put in. Sam: No, I I would agree. I mean, I think they would be the most prepared and athletically capable of competing against some of these big big boys, but who knows? Again, it's any given week, but I'm just excited to see kind of where that G six spot. We're we're all about the G six around here. We well, this is an all inclusive podcast. We love talking about the the the Sunbelt and Conference USA and the American. Congratulations, Charlotte, on their first win of the year, just against Temple. Just just had to bring it up. we watch all kinds of football. It's not just the power five over here. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, it's big time. Also, there was a kick six in college football this week. Also in the G6, North Dakota State, who we already mentioned, but kick six to end the half. Pretty electric. yeah, man. Okay. So Sam: Brought back flashbacks. Honey It's Saturday: let's just go over our biggest movers from the poll. We've kind of discussed it a little bit, so I'll go over it quickly. We don't have to go in depth. Texas, huge mover. They fall from eight to twenty-one, so they're way out of the top ten after their back to back losses. They've got a lot of responding to do. Alabama. Pretty similar situation. Their losses are to higher quality opponents, I would say. I mean, Florida and Oklahoma are capable of beating you any given week, but just as far as the ranking of the opponents they've lost to. But again, back to back losses for Bama. So they're five to sixteen this week. Missouri dropped from thirteen to twenty after their performance at Ole Miss. And then Tennessee rose from sixteen to seven, kind of just taking advantage of the opportunity that was in front of them with that win. against Bama and then Houston with their ranked win against Oklahoma State and some other teams losing, rose from twenty to thirteen in our poll. movers. Sam: yeah, definitely. you looked at Texas and Alabama two, three weeks ago, both top five. Texas was one. and just just how in a in a span of three weeks both these teams have lost back to back games when these were two teams that were Slight we're talking talked about is like, Hey, we got a chance to go undefeated or have a really good spot to be in the playoff. And now it's again, it's an elimination game every week for them. Honey It's Saturday: I mean, let's just rewind. And like Texas, the last two games are fresh in our mind. Can we remind ourselves they did in fact beat Ohio State this year? Sam: Yeah, like that feels like an eternity. Like the f Honey It's Saturday: That was the same season. Sam: yeah, which is wild for the way Ohio State is right now and the way they're playing, I it just doesn't make sense. Like you think that was that was the stone that they just had to get over Texas to be able to take that next step. And they did it, and they just fell right back down. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, I mean, college football has just been glorious this year. we did have two teams fall completely out of the top twenty five from last week. Mississipp State got shut out by LSU. We'll break it down very briefly because there's not a lot to talk about. But I mean, Camario Taylor didn't play, Fluff Bothwell didn't play. That's pretty much the story. But they fell out of the top twenty five and then Nebraska with their last second loss at Oregon also fell out of the top twenty five. Heartbreak Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: for Nebraska two weeks in a row. Sam: Yeah, I just they I remember when we when we broke down the Nebraska Indiana game two weeks ago, it was just I think they can compete, but they just haven't learned how to get the job done. And that that that point was proven again last night in Eugene. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Yeah. I want to move on because we got to get to our pick seven segment. So we're going to go through our pick seven after this, just so you guys are aware, and then we're going to break down the games for the week and we're going to go a little bit more in depth. So stick with us. I want to call out one of our major discrepancies between our two rankings. Cause you guys remember Sam creates his individual top 25 every week. I do the same thing on my own, and then we put them together. using a composite ranking system and that's how we get this honey at Saturday poll. So I want to call out one of our biggest discrepancies this week and discuss it. And that's going to be Texas Tech. So I want to talk about because we talked about SMU last week. We've been consistent there. Texas Tech, I've got them all the way up at five right now. And Sam's got them at 10. I think where they landed at eight in the rankings is completely fine. I have no issue with it. But we're five apart there in the top ten. Sam, what's your logic on tech being at ten? Sam: I think when you look at our like top twenty five, right? Texas Tech is we have them at eight. But the teams behind them, I I would feel pretty confident that they would go in there and beat Texas Tech. I I get it, it's like they're undefeated. I I just these some of these big twelve teams, like you put up against Notre Dame, you put up against Tech Alabama. You could put up against Wake Forest. You could put up against Georgia. T like I know that's just like the the generic like, well, if you play them on a neutral field, this probably gonna be a blowout. Or it's maybe not a blowout, but like it's gonna be like a pretty high point spread. And for me, it's just hard because I watch tech and I watch some of these other teams that are behind them, Kentucky even for that matter. And it's just it's night and day difference to me. Honey It's Saturday: I don't know, man. I I have a little bit of a different perspective. I think, and this is completely fine, but I think, and I'm from Big 12 country, like, so I grew up around it. So maybe I have a little bit less of like a tough time seeing it. But I think the country has a little bit of a preset disposition towards the Big 12, which I understand, especially the recent history of the Big 12. Like what you're saying, if you zoom out to last year or the year before, like I totally agree with you. I just think in this era of college football with everything changing year to year, like we have to remind ourselves an Indiana in two years can go from the worst program in college football history to an undefeated national champion. So if Indiana can do that, the Big 12 as a conference can go from a conference that can't really compete to a conference that can very well compete in a year-to-year basis as well. So I don't know. Like I try to take that out and like look at it from a lens where I can see it. you talk about Texas Tech being a Big Twelve team against a team like Notre Dame. Like we just saw a Big Twelve team play Notre Dame and beat them. And that was yesterday. for me, I'm trying to take it like it's an undefeated team. I think Houston's a great team. They've got that win on their resume. I don't know. That's that's really it for me. But I like I said, I have no problem with them being at eight. Sam: Let me let me ask you this. Who do you think is the better Texas Tech team? This year's Texas Tech Team or last year's Texas Tech team? Honey It's Saturday: I mean that's a great question. I I don't know at this point in the year if we can really say. I just like to be completely honest, when I say Big Twelve as a conference could be more competitive or less competitive, it doesn't even necessarily have to mean that the teams get better. It could mean the rest of the country levels out a little bit talent wise. Like, I don't think there's teams that are as dominant this year as there were last year. At the top Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: at the top of the country, like I don't think there are teams that are separating themselves the same way that we had last year. So Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: I just think from a competitive standpoint, I could see them competing with just about anybody. I could I could see them losing. Yes, a hundred percent. But I could see them competing too. Sam: Yeah. I think for me, like I think about that last year's Texas Tech team. I think that Texas Tech team last year was pretty good. And they were they were really good. And I thought they were the best Big Twelve team. I thought they could compete and they got blown out by Oregon in the playoff. This year's Texas Tech team, I feel like they have a little bit less talent, just not as fundamentally sound as they typically, yeah, at least comparative to how they were last year. To where yes, that they haven't done anything to remove them from that spot. But I think when we kinda get into the thick of it, when it's really matters for some these games, I just I don't know, people may call me a big twelve hater, so Honey It's Saturday: No, I I that's totally fine. I I don't disagree with you. But like I said, I think you have to factor in the rest of the country too. Like you could break out any single one of those top ten teams from I don't care what conference, SEC, ACC, Big Twelve, Big Ten. And I could say the same thing. I don't think Miami is as fundamentally sound or as put together as they were last year. I don't think maybe not BYU. BYU might actually be better. I don't think Ohio State this point in the year. is as fundamentally sound or as put together. Like you could say that about Ole Miss, who's already stumbled pretty significantly. Indiana, obviously, Georgia just lost to Auburn. Like I think it's not just the Big Twelve thing. I think it's the whole country. Sam: Yeah. No, that's very true. Hey, we're only halfway Honey It's Saturday: So anyways, that's Sam: through the year, so a lot a lot more time left to figure this all out. Honey It's Saturday: a hundred percent. And this is this is really fun. I just think it's it's great each week to pick out one thing that we were a little bit off on and then spark some conversation. So I think that was good. Sam: Yeah, I agree. And there's something that I was not off on this week, and it was my pick seven group. They Honey It's Saturday: Oof. Yeah. Sam: they got me 77 points to where I gives my grand total now to 641. feel like this was a a good bounce back week for me. I had some really big wins that helped my point totals. first off, first team Tennessee beat Alabama twenty-six to ten, beat a beat a team that was ranked higher than them. Margin of victory was pretty good there. That that was huge, huge for the squad. Virginia Tech beat Georgia Tech 34-24. Wins a win. USF, I'm I'm actually really upset about this game. USF beat Kent State 29 to 2. I really wanted Honey It's Saturday: The safety preventing you from getting the shutout bonus. Sam: I know. I wanted the shutout so badly. And that USF defense has played really well all year. And for the offense to find a way to to give these guys or Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Sam: special teams, whatever it was, to get them these two points really hurt because I wanted the shutout, but that's still still a good margin of victory for me and a good Honey It's Saturday: Dude, that is that is pretty brutal. Sam: good bounce back spot for USF though. They they needed that. Oklahoma Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Sam: State lost a heartbreaker to Houston. Really wanted them to get that win. Good ranked matchup potential. man, I I don't know. I I know you're a Houston guy and we we watched a little bit of this game but Honey It's Saturday: We will do a detailed breakdown on this, which I'm very excited for. But yes, for from a pick seven perspective, I apologize. That's really tough for you. But I dude, I still think Oklahoma State's a good football team. I think you're fine. Sam: I know, I know. But I wanted that win. That would have been good for the points. Wake Forest went into Cal and beat him 41 to 7, which, man, this Wake Forest team has proven to be, I think, the best pick of my entire seven. I I just love watching them and the way they play ball. this next one again is another heartbreaker. Michigan State hosted Northwestern and lost by three twenty four twenty one. Fitzgerald playing against his old school. was thinking this was the time. I keep saying every week he's gonna get his one and I still think he's gonna get it. And I was really thinking this was gonna be it, a ranked matchup. Kind of some of the the baggage that came with that. And they just found a way to lose it at the end. Honey It's Saturday: There was a moment in time during this game where Michigan State was down by a pretty significant margin. And I actually texted Sam and I was like, Well, that's not looking good. Next thing you know, he texts me and they're tied at like at the end of the fourth quarter. And obviously Northwestern ended up taking it with a field goal. But that's just it's it's a team that you know they've got something in and they just haven't been able to do it yet. And they I hate look, they've got plenty of opportunities ahead of them, yeah, that's That's frustrating. Sam: Yeah. And then my last team, State lost to Texas State 66 to 27. These these margins Honey It's Saturday: They gave up. Sam: of victories are killing me with these with these Rams. Honey It's Saturday: They gave up over over seven hundred yards in that game. Over five hundred rushing. Sam: Like this is just this whole situation with the defensive coordinator who they retained from last year and fired middle of the game two weeks ago and the Jim Moora coming out, basically like publicly calling him out again for like this should have never taken this long for me to make the like it's just all the drama that's attached to it is wild to me. And they just Jim Moore's like they was successful at UConn. Like I know he can do it, and he's been a coach for a long time. I would have thought this would have been his opportunity for more resources at Colorado State and just a chance for him to kind of shock the Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Sam: shock the Pac twelve and he just not doing it. Honey It's Saturday: I agree. And I know he's frustrated and he should be frustrated. I totally understand. But I also think as a head coach and as a leader, you have to handle this situation better. Like, even if and it's probably true, he probably should have fired him way before he did. He probably shouldn't have kept him. But like, even if that's true, you don't continue to throw a guy under the bus repeatedly, like over and like just focus on yourself, move forward. How can we be better as a program? I know the way that he left wasn't pretty, and I'm sure he's not happy about it too. But like you got to stop putting the onus on other people, like the blame. And and look, that DC, he's got his own career to worry about. And I'm sure he's gonna have consequences for like the way he's gone about it. But Mora, like you gotta focus on this team and the next week. Like I I'm a little tired of hearing about it, you know? Sam: Yeah, same. I'm tired of losing a lot of points too with them. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Shout out Sam Marcus. Way to go, Texas State. Good win for the Bobcats. All right. Sam: yeah. Honey It's Saturday: All right. my teams did not have a great week. Like Sam was talking super negatively about that last game, but overall he had a really good week. he's now in front of me. I have 612. I lost 16 points this week. Oregon, I'll start out on a positive note, did get a win. It was very gritty because Dante Moore was indeed still out. For this week. They started Brock Thomas, who let's just he did not play well. He got pulled in the second half. Dylan Riola comes in in the fourth quarter. Oregon's been playing from behind the whole game, haven't scored an offensive touchdown, plays the fourth quarter against his former team and leads a comeback victory. Last second touchdown, electric. This was a really late game, so I'm sure a lot of people didn't get to see it. I would recommend going back to watch it. That's a big win for me. I needed that. Oregon needed that for sure. and Nebraska man, that's back to back weeks of heartbreak, like we said earlier. So that's really tough. Indiana, Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: Ohio State. I mean, this game, like I need a punching bag because of this game. I got way too much energy, way too much stress and frustration. And I know I I don't blame the kid. Like, He's a baller, absolute baller. And he made plays in this game. But man, can you think of a more brutal way to lose than the way Indiana just lost at home in probably their biggest home game ever against Ohio State? I mean, dude, perfect play call. Absolutely torches the corner on his route. And he's wide open in the end zone, forgets where he is, and he catches the ball with a foot out of bounds. Ball game. Sam: Hey, you know, I I get I get he's getting a lot of flack for that. Some of that's on Hoover too. Honey It's Saturday: I was about to say that. Like, I mean he's wide but open. Like you don't have to throw that ball in the sideline. You can lead him a little bit more in. but that's still a play that Marsh has gotta make. I mean, he makes that catch nine out of ten times. Sam: Yeah. I think it was just one of those truly where yes, he makes that catch nine out of ten times if he knows he's getting a back shoulder fade, whatever it may be. he was so open. I mean, he just destroyed the corner on a little stop and go. I mean, it was beautiful. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. I see what you're saying. Like I really do. It's definitely not only on Nick Marsh. I mean, that is on Hoover for sure and he has to be better. But I'm just saying Nick Marsh is one of the best receivers in the entire country. He's got to make that play. Sam: No, I know. I agree. I'm with you. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. So anyways, that's a heartbreaking way to lose. Obviously it's Ohio State, it's not the end of the season for Indiana, but that's really tough for my pick seven. it would have been a bonus point for me too, because Ohio State was a higher ranked opponent. So that's brutal. North Dakota State got back on track with a win this week, thirty one seventeen over Nevada. It wasn't super pretty. they had the kick six that I mentioned earlier to end the half, which is amazing. They also had one of the most athletic interceptions I've ever seen on the sideline. Kind of a Over the shoulder toe tap by the DB that was beautiful in this game. So I like what I'm seeing out of North Dakota State. Cal Wake Forest. Sam already talked about it. I don't want to talk about it. this Cal team, they're not putting together performances like they needed to. they're a little bit banged up, but at this point it is what it is. You got to figure it out. Next man up mentality, and they're just not doing it. And Wake Forest is a good team. But they got killed 41 7. Delaware lost a Heartbreaker by three to middle Tennessee State, but we actually already knew that when we recorded the last episode because that was a Tuesday night game, which is kind of crazy. And Sam: Mm-hmm. Honey It's Saturday: then Oregon State, this is the team where I feel like this is probably Wake Forest is your best pick, is what you're saying. I think Oregon State is probably my best pick at this point. they continue to roll. They beat Washington State 48-30. Their offense does nothing but score points. Atkinson is electric at quarterback, LeGree is electric at wide receiver. They're They're a little bit of a scary team to play too. I know they've got two losses as a G six team, but both of those losses are to really quality opponents. And I mean, every other week they've looked really good. So I don't think if you're a G six team, that's someone you want to see on the calendar. and then Sam Houston State is a conference USA team that I also picked, and that was a decision that I made. And they lost to Western Kentucky 16 to three this week. So not a great one for me, but we'll bounce back. Sam: There's there's there's a lot of football left. I think you gotta get some of your Converse USA guys to get in pitch in for some wins here. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, I know that's gonna be a little bit a little bit difficult, I think. what are your thoughts on that Oregon State conversation, by the way? I know they have two losses, but their losses are to Houston and Texas Tech. Like what's your opinion on them as a G six contender? Sam: Dude, they're right there. Like, I think they have to be. I think it's a it's a weird dynamic because they're technically power five being in the pack twelve. But I don't d Honey It's Saturday: I think that the Pac twelve falls into the G six category, I think. Mm-hmm. Sam: Does it? Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Sam: 'Cause I guess last year it wasn't there wasn't really such a thing as a Pac twelve besides literally Oregon State and Washington State. Honey It's Saturday: Well it does because remember Boise State is also a pack twelve team now. Sam: yes. Okay. That's right. so then I guess are do they get an automatic spot comparative to the G C I guess it's is it would it go back to the original where it's like SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big Twelve, Pac twelve? Or are they still kind of left out? Honey It's Saturday: No, not this year. Pac twelve is considered a G six conference this year. So they would be bundled in with all the others. Sam: Gotcha. Okay. So yeah, sorry, I was thinking about it. I was like, Wow, it's threw me for a curve. The the pack twelve is back. Honey It's Saturday: No, it is it it is a little bit of a yeah, it is a little bit of an interesting conversation, but yeah. Sam: I think they're there. I think they're a great team that continues to improve every single week. Really good wide receiver quarterback combo. I mean, honestly, just the way that those guys have been able to play on on a on a culture in a team that's not really ever had success besides a couple of years ago when Smith was there. I mean Honey It's Saturday: I mean, that was one of the program the the biggest story for me here, to your point, is like this is one of the programs that was probably the most devastated by the Pac-Twelves disbanding. Like Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: they were hung out to dry, completely stranded, they lost all their resources, their talent just dispersed around the country. And I mean, the last two years have been really bad for that program. They had no home as far as conferences, didn't belong anywhere. They were losing left and right. And like the turnaround this year, I mean, you you gotta hand it to them. That staff is doing an incredible job. Sam: Yeah, and for somebody that's never been a head coach, like Shepard who was he w I don't even think he was a coordinator. I think he was a receiver coach. Like he's he's got those guys rolling. He's I mean, you watch some of his videos that they put out of just the complete command that he has of that team and respect he gets from his players. It's just it's really refreshing to see in this in this era of college football. Honey It's Saturday: Absolutely. Absolutely. Sam: All right, so we're going into our buy, sell, hold segment. Is that right? Honey It's Saturday: I don't know, man. We could do it, but I think we should save it for Wednesday. I think we need to go into our game recaps. We'll kind of like Sam: Okay. Honey It's Saturday: we're teasing our audience right now. Like I know you guys really want to hear our buy sell hold. I know we do a great job with that every week. So I'm excited for it. We're gonna make you guys wait for the Wednesday episode though. We are gonna go into our our breakdowns. I think we really need to at this point. Sam: Yeah, I think we're what, about forty minutes in and we haven't talked about a breakdown yet in game, so might need to. first Honey It's Saturday: Let's do it. Sam: first game on the slate is the number four Ohio State Buckeyes against Indiana. Ohio State went into Bloomington and won nineteen to fifteen. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, no problem. look, I mean, this was a huge game going in. Indiana was riding a twenty-two game win streak. It's a top ten matchup, a big ten championship rematch from the previous year. It had all the hype. I just look, it did not let down as far as the game actually went. I think maybe the way it played out didn't quite line up with some of our expectations. I think both quarterbacks honestly looked a little bit off. I think. Hoover, maybe we expected that from a little bit because he hasn't seemed to put it together yet. Saying, I don't think we expected to see the mistakes that we saw. Those two interceptions were a little bit uncharacteristic. I don't know, man. This was a very evenly matched game. I thought both defenses were flying around. I thought they looked really good. They both did an incredible job against the run. Neither team rushed for 80 yards total. Both teams held it like Indiana ran for 73, Ohio State ran for 78. So that's pretty wild. Indiana slightly outgained them overall, but I mean, this was about as even of a game as you could ask for and as you could get. So while I say it was sloppier than you would expect, I also think these were two really good teams just going at it band for band with one another. And we've already talked about the way the game ended. Like, look, it doesn't get more fifty fifty pick coin flip than this. Like it was decided by a foot out of bounds. And that's that's it. That's that's how the game went down. So congrats to Ohio State. Big win. The one thing I'll say here, Julian Sane injury in the fourth quarter might turn out to be a bigger deal than I think we I mean, maybe we realize it's a huge deal, but I just think it's a big talking point. Cause saying it it's already been confirmed by Ryan Day that he's gonna be out for at least a few weeks. his shoulder was in a sling, his arm was in a sling. at the end of that game. So that's not a great sign. So that's just something to keep an eye on moving forward. But this is a huge win for the Bucass. Sam: it's a massive no no matter which way you look at it. Defensively, they just they came to play. I think Hoover and Indiana really missed some opportunities. I think they had a couple bad turnovers that they could have could have let them maybe get a little bit closer as the game went on. everybody's gonna look at that last play too. I think in my mind, your mind, it was like, okay. Indiana's doing what they did the week before. They're just more composed, more confident. They're gonna go in there and win the football game at the end, just just be better. and they they weren't able to pull it out. I was honestly really impressed with Indiana and how they really kind of locked up Jeremia Smith, besides that one just ridiculous touchdown that just Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. On fourth down, which by the way is another one of those like great play by Jeremiah Smith, but Indiana, you can't those those D Bs, you can't let that happen on the back end. Sam: No, you can't. And I honestly I think I've I've been watching a little bit of the Saban documentary stuff. And I'm I'm in nowhere comparing Saban to Signetti. And I think Signetti is a fantastic coach. But one of those things Saban says was kind of when he was going through his years of just a lot of wins, national championships, undefeated, that loss was a humbling thing often for those for those teams, just because it's they didn't lose very often to where it was a good reset, a good, hey. never want to lose, but like we kind of needed to be humbled a little bit to know like we're not this force that can be reckoned with. So I think this'll I think this will bode well for Indiana. Ohio State, they needed that. It was a great win. I I remember texting a couple of my Ohio State buddies from college asking about the backup quarterback and it it didn't seem like there's much hopes or like there's not a ton to know about this guy. So it'll be interesting to see how they go on throughout the rest of the season. Luckily for them, I feel like they have some opportunities to just run the football and play really good defense if that's what it comes down to with the rest of their schedule. But I mean that's a Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Sam: crew that's a crucial win for them and their playoff hopes and just Big Ten race. I mean, it's really between those two right now, it seems like Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, and there's not many better situations for a backup quarterback, honestly. Cause yes, we don't know a ton about Luke Faye, but you're throwing the ball to Jeremiah Smith and you're throwing the ball to that entire wide receiver core, which is just so deep. So Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: I don't know. I think they'll probably be okay. other thing I will say here before we move on, because we've talked about a couple of mistakes by Indiana that were critical in this one. The missed field goal in the first quarter turned out to be a really big deal. I mean, it was like a twenty yard field goal. twenty five. It was very short field goal, clanked it off the upright. And at the time, I remember Sam and I both were like, that's going to be a huge moment in this game. And it really was, because if you think about it, let's say they have that field goal. This game is 1918 on that final drive. Indiana doesn't Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: feel the Indiana doesn't feel the same urgency to take shots to the end zone. They can do what they need to do to get the ball in place for a kick, and all they need is a field goal to win the game. So I mean There were just multiple times where you're like, that was not taken advantage of. But to your point, I think Signetti and the boys will take that as an opportunity to learn and get better. Sam: Yeah, I will say with going to the kicking conversation, it was a really weird dynamic when it came to that because they missed the twenty yarder, right, earlier in earlier in the game. They had an opportunity to kick like a forty five yard field goal, maybe in the I can't remember if it was a second or third quarter. And they decided to go for it, didn't get it, and then they kicked a fifty yarder later in the game too that he missed. So it was like I think him missing that twenty yarder kind of ruined the confidence for the coaching staff for him. And then they're like, Okay, we we know he's a good kicker. We need him to make it and he didn't make fifty. So just it seemed like it was Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Sam: a little bit of mismanagement when it came to the kicking kicking game. Honey It's Saturday: I would agree. And I mean you hope that that doesn't become a long time a long term issue because special teams can, especially in these big time games, become a huge deal. So you don't want that to linger, but hopefully they can figure that out. Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: all right. We'll talk about this one briefly. We've already mentioned it. Camario Taylor and Fluff Bothwell did not play for Mississippi, which we kind of knew going into the game, but there was a chance Camario was gonna play, so we threw it on our slate and LSU just ran away. Thirty one nothing against Mississippi State, completely shut him out. like I said, not a ton of talking points here. Obviously, if you're an LSU fan, that's great. You got a ranked win, you move on. and I think from the Mississippi State side, you kind of gotta take it for what it is and move on as well. What what are your thoughts here? Sam: Yeah, I just think it it stinks for Mississippi State. Like I think Mario Taylor truly is that much of a game changer for them. To where if he's in this game, I think it's a different story. I'm not gonna say they're gonna go win the football game, but these are both top twenty five teams. Like Mississippi State has one loss to Alabama where they kind of got beat down, but Taylor went out hurt in that game. so I just just not a full strength Mississippi State. They were exciting to watch those first few weeks and I hope they get back to that point where they're fully healthy and can do it. But LSU did what they needed to do to get the win. Big good bounce back spot for them after the loss against Kentucky. again, they're another one of those SEC teams that's playing for it every single week, so they needed that one. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, a couple things. First shutout by LSU against an SEC team since two thousand seven, which also happened to be against Mississippi. Second thing, Sam Levitt, the one thing we've talked about with him consistently is the turnovers. And to his credit, he put together a really good game. Thirty thirty-one of thirty-eight, two hundred and eighty-nine yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions. So Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: That is a positive takeaway for LSU moving forward. I know this Mississippi State secondary hasn't looked elite to this point, but that's just a big deal for him to not turn the ball over. Sam: Yeah, I agree. It's it's it's a good spot for him to continue to improve and just get better every week. Honestly, he he came out of the game a little bit early too, gives him more rest. I know he's been Honey It's Saturday: Mm-hmm. Sam: battling injuries throughout the season and honestly LSU as a whole has. So they needed that one big time and Tennessee got another big one this weekend, too. They needed that one pretty badly. big time confidence booster for that program. Man, I I was sad that I missed most of the game, but it just Sounded like a complete defensive domination. Alab or Tennessee beat Alabama 26 to 10. I still need to smoke to my cigar. I haven't done that yet. But man, this this just George McIntyre did enough to win the game. He had one interception that I don't even think necessarily was his fault, was just a deflection off the receiver who a little bit behind, but he should have caught it. He managed the game really well. Deshaun Bishop ran the football. Excellent. Offensive line got really good push. Defensively, man, holy smokes. These guys are flying around. They are in the right spot every single time. I think one of the big things that was key with that we've always talked about Jim Knowles' defense takes two years, right? He brought over a couple Penn State guys on all three levels from defensive line, linebacker, and safety. And they have just flat out. facilitated that defense. And a lot of the Tennessee guys there that are still really good players have embraced that system. And it it's showing very clearly. I mean, they they had Keelan Russell in a body bag on Saturday. so it was just a huge win. Special teams went four for four on field goals. Tennessee left a lot out there too. Like twenty six to ten is a pretty dominant win, but Tennessee had some red zone chances where they probably short should have scored touchdowns. So this this game could have been a lot worse. Honey It's Saturday: I mean, this game started out nine-zero on three field goals, and at least two of those possessions really should have been touchdowns. So you're you're Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: not wrong about that at all. I think for Tennessee, that defense, which we've we've talked about plenty, like that defense is ridiculous. They keep proving it just week after week. They are relentless. They get after you. The secondary is great as well. I mean, it's really all levels. They are clicking on all cylinders. The offense was the only thing we've got questions on, and we've had questions consistently. I don't, we just talked about the missed opportunities. I don't think all of those questions are answered for Tennessee's offense. Sam: Mm. Honey It's Saturday: But at the end of the day, you got to take this for what it is. You just beat a top 10 Alabama team at home, huge rivalry game. You needed it really badly. I I think you take this momentum and you move forward. McIntyre did do what he needed to do. the loss of Ryan Coleman Williams for Alabama, I think was detrimental a hundred percent. But based off what I saw from their offensive line and from Keelan Russell. I don't know that it would have made a massive difference in this game just because Keelan didn't really have any time. Like he was lost. He threw for less than a hundred fifty yards in this contest. Alabama really one of the main stories here is the turnovers. I mean, Russell threw two interceptions. They also fumbled the ball twice. So they had four total turnovers in this game. You don't win like that. And Tennessee was able to do what they need to do on the ground with Bishop And then the last thing is just the possession. Tennessee did what they needed to do on the ground and they held the ball for thirty five minutes in this game. So all in all, you couldn't really write a better script for Tennessee. And even with the missed opportunities, this is just a massive win. Sam: Yeah. I mean they they followed the script. I mean, last week when you and I talked about it, it's defensively they're gonna continue to play well. Can the offense just do enough to keep them in the game? Special teams played really well. The crowd in Nealand is just rocking the entire game entire game. I mean, Keelan Russell that you could definitely tell that had an effect on him. And just the noise and just how they could communicate up front with his guys. So just a great win. Great win for the balls. They have a sneaky, scary one. against South Carolina. just a great win all around for the Vols. I think this is gonna be a team that is here to stay. I've I've been a lot less, I guess, pushy about about my vols, just 'cause there have been some questions and I think there definitely are still some questions, but this defense is just going to keep them in every single football game, no matter who they're playing. So it makes me excited for what for what's to come the rest of the way. transition into our next game for today. We got Missouri going to Ole Miss. Austin Simmons return home. And it was nothing short but a absolute domination by the Rebels. They won 31 to 3 this game, man. Trinidad played pretty well. He missed a couple throws early on, but this Ole Miss defense, man, they were able to contain Austin Simmons really well. It was really impressive just for the way Ole Miss' defense has been playing throughout the year, especially with like a mobile quarterback. Austin Simmons isn't the most mobile, but he he's relatively mobile. But for think about Lincoln Keenholz, week one, Sam Levitt, some of these other guys that they've played, you would have thought Austin Simmons would have been able to do the same thing. And they just I mean, it it still shocks me reading the score thirty one to three, just 'cause Mitch and I both picked Missouri. We thought this was going to be a way more competitive football game. It lined up better for Missouri and Ole Miss just kind of shut both of us up pretty quickly. Honey It's Saturday: 100%. This was not how I saw this game going at all. I'm incredibly impressed with what I saw from Ole Miss's defense specifically in this game. Offensively, we know Ole Miss is great. Trinidad had four touchdowns. He did he didn't light it up through the air. He only had 240 yards, which I mean, only that's not bad. But four total touchdowns, three through the air, one on the ground. Trinidad, you know what you're gonna get from him. He's an incredible player. What I I mean, what tells the story really of this game and what shocked both me and Sam the most. Missouri has been an incredible running football team. That's their identity. They've been able to do it against no matter who the opponent was. They rushed against an old miss defense that has been vulnerable and missed tackles throughout this year. That's not a Pete Golding staple. So we were wondering what was going on with the Ole Miss defense. But to this point in the year, their defense has looked very vulnerable. And I'll remind you that they got beat by a Florida team who just ran all over them. So we've seen them get run through like that. before this year and Missouri was held under 40 yards rushing. 39 total rushing Sam: Which is unheard of. Honey It's Saturday: yards in this game. I mean, I didn't see that coming. Sam didn't see it coming. I honestly don't think Ole Miss fans saw that coming, but they'll take it. And that's a huge positive sign for them moving forward. And if you told me before the game that Missouri was going to run for 39 yards, I would have I would have guessed that the score would have been about what it was. I mean That's an offense that can't function without a ground game. Simmons threw for three hundred and thirty nine yards, but it didn't matter. Sam: No. No, it didn't. And so I I mean Missouri it's hard because they already got two losses. Ole Miss just Ole Miss is in a really good spot right now in the SEC. They've got that Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Sam: one loss to the Gators, but they're playing some really good football. I mean, they destroyed Vanderbilt last week. They destroyed Missouri. They they're getting hot at the right time. Honey It's Saturday: A hundred percent. I mean, dude, it's the SEC. It's like scrambled eggs. We we don't know what we're gonna get on the other side. We'll find out though. Sam: Yeah. And this this next game, I don't think either of us expected it to be exactly like this either. Florida State went to Miami and just some r a really crazy ending, but they ended up losing to Miami 43 to 35. two back to back Hail Mary attempts. One that was called back for holding and one that ended up being determined at interception. But I'm gonna give my props to Florida State, man. Like, yeah, they kind of had the Hail Mary That really wasn't a holding and they would have had to have gone for two. but for a team that could have just flat out quit on Norvell after what these last couple seasons have been. They've continued to play really hard for their coach. Ashton Daniels has been really impressive. It makes me wonder why he wasn't starting for Auburnall last year instead of Jackson Arnold, but there's a reason Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Sam: for that, obviously. But just I mean, they they continue to play really well for their coach, and I I I love to see it. Miami, they're good offensively. I mean, Mensa had one one bad pick that I think he wishes he could have had back, but he is still just super efficient. I think the injury showed up a little bit on defense on Saturday, just with how well Florida State was able to just kind of put up some points and offensively be able to execute. So again, Miami needs to have some of these games just as the season goes on because they're gonna play a lot tougher competition. I mean, they have they have BYU coming up down the road, so that's gonna be a high intensity game. but This this a good good test for Miami and I think it's something that they needed to realize they're not as invincible as maybe they think. Honey It's Saturday: Definitely not. and I mean this is a rivalry game. Like Sam's saying, anything can happen. But dude, Florida State, they played their tails off. They played their absolute Sam: Mm-hmm. Honey It's Saturday: tails off. Ashton Daniels, five total touchdowns, which isn't even the first time we've said that on this podcast this year. He had five total touchdowns against Virginia a couple weeks ago, which like like Sam said, he's been playing good football. four touchdowns through the air, one on the ground, only threw one interception. Deuce Robinson went off. At wide receiver for Sam: Dude's a baller. Honey It's Saturday: Florida State. 113 yards, two touchdowns in this game. Miami's a great team. And Mensah, he played well. Tony is electric, obviously scored the game winning touchdown. there's not a whole lot you can do with that offense defensively. Like you said, I think they're banged up and you'd like to see a lot more from them if you're a Miami fan. At the end of the day, you take the win. You're the number one team in the country. And you try to improve week after week. I just we we had a whole officiating segment last week, just discussing the state of officiating in college football. We have such a high level sport that's getting more and more traction in publicity. And I feel like the trajectory of like publicity and the level of sports going like this, and maybe it's because of the increased publicity, but it feels like the officiating. Accountability and integrity is going like this. Like it's just going down. And this was another example of that. I mean, I I don't know, you never speculate, but it's just the the way the game ended. The first Hail Mary was caught. It was an incredible play. They call Phantom Holding that just straight up wasn't a hold. It just wasn't. I've watched it a million times. It just was not a hold. We're not fans of either team. They call that back. They get another opportunity after the hold. And it's like a 50-50 who caught it. A lot of times the tie goes to the wide receiver. They didn't rule Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: it that way. That one is a little more controversial. Like I could understand they called it an interception on the field. It has to stay that way. But man, like if you're a Seminoles fan and if you're Mike Norvell and your job is on the line the way that it is, that's a really difficult way to lose that game. Sam: yeah, for sure. I mean, I honestly don't think the ACC could have can afford for Miami to lose. And I I'm not saying that's it that's anything part of that result, but like for the state of the ACC, like right now it's literally Miami and wakes kind of on that tier two, and then that's kind of it. Like there's Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Sam: not much like from a national standpoint of who's gonna be able to compete in the playoffs. So Honey It's Saturday: Not at all. Not then. So yeah, I mean I'd agree with you. Like Duke was looking good and now they've lost two in a row. So Sam: Yeah. I mean, that was something where I wish they could you could hear the the ref refs talking about that of like why they saw like what they saw was a hold. Like I would love to have referee press conferences to where some of these reporters and stuff can Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, we need it at this point. Sam: like not grill into them, but like ask just their reasoning behind it. 'cause this next game, I think there was some questions behind it too, to a point where the conference put out a statement saying that the referee screwed up. Like I have we've been watching college football for a long time, Mitch. This whole like conferences putting out just a a memo letter of, hey, we screwed up, sorry. Like that's happened quite a few times this year. And that happened again, where it was basically BYU beat Notre Dame on Saturday, twenty eight to twenty four. Notre Dame had a yeah, huge win. Honey It's Saturday: Huge win for BYU. Massive. Sam: Not not gonna take that away, but huge win for Notre for BYU. But they had a chance Notre Dame in the end to score. one, there's pretty blatant pass interference that wasn't called. And secondly, the and that's what the the the commissioner came out and said there was one second left on the clock, should have been reviewed, should have been fixed. My bad, BYU still wins. so just just a really a really rough ending for Notre Dame for what was such a great football game. but again, BYU won the game and they looked good. Bear Bachmeyer played really good football without their running back, too. I was expecting a little bit of a lapse of offense. But he he impressed me throwing the football. I think both these teams are really good. but he really impressed me a lot more than Cam Carr or Carr did for me. what's what Cam Carr? Is that his brother? Honey It's Saturday: That's CJ Carr. Sam: CJ Carr. Cam Carr is I think is his brother in Michigan. I don't know why I get those two mixed. But CJ Carr, yeah. He did. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Who also got reps this week, by the way? He actually won a game this week. Sam: He did. He got he got got some got some win against Michigan, a big rivalry matchup that meant nothing. great win for BYU. Notre Dame. Again, this is their this is their one loss that they've they had last year and they had another one later in the year, which could be Miami to come up. But two teams that I think have a lot to improve on still as the year goes on, but both are sitting pretty good right now. Honey It's Saturday: I think there's some pretty interesting storylines for this game, so I'm excited to talk about it. But I agree with everything you said. I think both these teams are really good. BYU impressed me a ton. Like this was a prove it game for them, especially with LJ Martin out, their star running back. And they did prove it. Like, even if they'd have lost this game, I would still be sitting here saying BYU really impressed me. Like they Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: looked like a very solid football team. Bachmeyer was comfortable. He looked really good. Obviously, Notre Dame's start edge. was ejected for targeting, targeting early in this game. So I think that helped Botmeier feel even more comfortable throughout this one. but yeah, I mean, he looked great. He threw the ball with efficiency. They turned the ball over a couple of times, but they were able to obviously survive that and win this game. They did what they needed to on the ground, 120 yards. This was honestly a very statistically and and visually a very evenly matched football game. Time of possession is right about split. Yards are right about split in every category. man, I just I'm tired of talking about officiating. Like that's that's all I'm gonna say. I'm just tired of talking about it. Cause we just talked about Florida State Miami and we lead Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: directly into this. By the way, those two games were kind of like back to back on that late window. So it was like college football Twitter was going crazy yesterday because it was like. Everyone's blowing up about the officiating in Florida State. And then the Notre Dame BYU game ends the way it does immediately after. And everyone's like head on fire, what's going on? I just it can't happen. Like the past interference was very obvious. I think pretty much everyone agrees that's PI, but that's not even the one I'm more concerned about. It's the fact that there's a second left on the clock. Like, Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: what are we doing? And and and I know there are people, their entire job is like they're in the review, review control center. Like We got way too many cameras, way too much technology to just ignore a whole second, which is a whole play and an opportunity for Notre Dame to win the game. And just, okay, we're done, whatever. so that's just frustrating, obviously for Notre Dame. But this was an incredible performance by BYU. I think CJ Carr got off to a slow start, but I will say, like that last drive, even though they didn't end up winning the game, CJ Carr made play after play. I was very impressed with the way that he managed the game on that last drive. He was composed, led him all the way down the field. Obviously didn't end the way they needed to. I think both these quarterbacks are good. I think for Notre Dame, one of the side stories is BYU and Notre Dame were supposed to play in a bowl game last year. Notre Dame got all sad about not making the playoff, whatever. And they were like, we're not going to play in our bowl game. So they didn't. They backed out and it was supposed to be against BYU. So that was one of the storylines going into this game. It was like, okay, they're finally going to play. They can't back out this time. And then the game ends the way it does. I'm curious to see how Marcus Freeman and the program respond to that. Because, in my opinion, they didn't respond with integrity last year. I understand being frustrated about the playoff, but backing out of the bowl game, like, I and Marcus Freeman even said, like, I was proud of the boys for doing that. I honestly I didn't love the way that went down. And I like Marcus Freeman, but I don't think that that was the right way for them to handle that situation and to lead young men into like when things don't go your way, you just quit. I just I don't like that lesson in general. And now they do play BYU and it ends the way it does, and they've got the conference saying, Yeah, we screwed up, you guys should have had another play. Like, how do they respond this time? That's what I want to see out of Notre Dame. So I I'm very curious. Sam: Yeah, no, I think that's a phenomenal point. Like the way that ended last year, and not only did they turn down just any bowl game, they turned down the Pop Tarts Bowl, which is it's the Honey It's Saturday: Which is a fantastic ball game. Sam: greatest bowl game in this bowl season that we have now. I mean, they toast a human Pop Tart and he comes out. I mean, I don't know how you could not want your players to experience that. Like, that's just peak college football. But I mean, like you said, they're not setting these guys up for success. Is he gonna use this as a Hey, well, we really should have won that game if we had a chance. Like what's the attitude gonna be? 'Cause if I mean if they if they lose to Miami or maybe they slip up another one of these games, it's it's not gonna be pretty just when that conversation starts to come about if they don't Honey It's Saturday: No, it's not. I mean it's an opportunity for them to change it up, but I just don't know. Like part of me is curious because he's built that foundation in the culture and I don't know. Part of me is curious how they respond to it. But maybe they've learned their lesson. We'll see. Sam: Yeah. And maybe I've learned Honey It's Saturday: All right. Sam: my lesson on Houston. Houston beat Oklahoma State thirty five to thirty two. Houston just keeps proving me wrong and it's really getting bad. I put my faith in them early on against Texas Tech and they let me down. And I think I've picked against them about every single time since that point. And they have just continued to win. So they're a good team. Wegmans look really good. defensively, they have some guys that can make plays. I mean, they're not gonna they're not a world beater on defense, but they do enough to keep them in the games and I mean, I really was thinking this was Oklahoma State's opportunity to just kind of make a statement in the Big Twelve and they c they kind of shut that down. I t I still think Oklahoma State's a good team. I still think the Big Twelve is gonna be pretty wide open. 'Cause I mean, that's Oklahoma State's first Big Twelve loss. So that's that's just one loss in conference play. So Big Twelve is still wide open, but man, I just I Houston just continues to humble me. Honey It's Saturday: I mean, look, at the end of the day, it's all about accountability. And I've made plenty of mistakes. I we all make plenty of mistakes. At the end of the day, we can acknowledge our mistakes and move forward. And I appreciate you doing that with Houston. look, here's the deal. You did, you did, but then you picked against them again. So Sam: I did it last week too. I know. But it was Oklahoma State. I had to. Honey It's Saturday: I know, I know. I at the end of the day, look, when we were going into this game, I said, I think this is these are two really good teams, and I think this is an opportunity for a classic Big 12 shootout. Classic vintage Big 12 shootout, mid 2010s. And honestly, it lived up to it. Like there were fireworks everywhere in this game. Both these offenses were really good. They put up like right at 500 yards each. I mean, four ninety nine for Oklahoma State, five five for Houston. Like Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: Very, very evenly matched football game. Two really good offenses. Look, Wigman had five total touchdowns in this game. He just continues to do that. He's got the most total touchdowns in the entire country. He's only thrown two interceptions all year. I think if he continues to play this way, he will play his way into some very serious conversations at the end of the year. I think he's going under the radar right now. I don't think he'll be able to go under the radar as far as like. Heisman, trophy conversations, all those things, if he continues to play the way he does, which is a big if he has to. But to this point in the year, he's been an incredible quarterback. Mesta Maker, also a great quarterback. He played well in this game. 365 yards, three touchdowns. Like this was just fireworks. I think really what it was, Houston was able to keep Oklahoma State off the field. They were able to get a couple critical stops. They obviously didn't get that many, but a couple critical stops, and they were able to possess the ball and get the ground game going. both QB run and running back. And they out possessed Oklahoma State by ten minutes in this game. And I really think that's the difference. They were they had a lead. They jumped out to an early lead and Oklahoma State was calling back. And at the end of the day, Houston was able to do enough and hang on. And that's really what it came down to. Sam: Yeah, they really grinded out that finish. I mean, that was that was what won them that game. I know we're talking about a little bit of a shootout. Two teams that were over five hundred total yards. to I don't even think a total of five hundred yards in this game for both teams. and that's Wisconsin Honey It's Saturday: Barely, yeah. Sam: against UCLA. the UCLA ended up winning 17 to 7. man. UCLA's defense held Colton Joseph to 66 yards passing. Granted, he didn't throw the ball a ton, but still really impressive. UCLA honestly didn't run the football as great as they did. I mean, their quarterback threw for 264, which is not what I expected, considering how efficient they have been running the football. But I mean, ultimately for me, this game just was just defense, defense, defense. And UCLA continues to prove that last week necessarily wasn't a fluke. defensively and how they played against Oregon. And I mean, Colton Joseph is a good quarterback. They have a good offense that's improved ever since that Notre Dame game. but just wasn't just was wasn't enough for them to overcome the UCLA hump. So great win for UCLA who just continues to kind of prove people wrong on a week to week basis. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, their defense is just absolutely dominant. And their offense obviously is gonna have to figure some things out with the Nico injury and that transition. I wouldn't say they looked great this week. If you would have told me going into the game, because I I think Wisconsin was, at least going into this game, one of those teams in the Big Ten, I thought had potential to become a little bit of a threat, like that nobody was really talking about. I thought Wisconsin was capable of pulling an upset in this game, especially with the quarterback injury. If you would have told me UCLA lost the turnover margin by two, which they did. I probably would have guessed Wisconsin might have pulled the upset, but that's just not the script in this game. Like I I'm very impressed consistently with UCLA's defense. And I don't know. If they if they continue to play this way, they can keep themselves in pretty much every game moving forward. They're they're still undefeated at this point. Sam: Yeah, yeah, they're definitely a a team to be reckoned with. especially in that conference too. So Honey It's Saturday: Hundred percent. Sam: and I and I know I said earlier Ohio State, Indiana are the only two I'm sorry, I left out UCLA. UCLA fans forgive me. They are very much still in that race as they are the only undefeated team right now, I think. Honey It's Saturday: Absolutely. And we we do have to talk about that. We didn't pick this game because I didn't think Auburn was going to go to Athens and knock off the number one team in the country. And I apologize to the world for that, that we did not preview or pick this game. But how about the Auburn Tigers taking down the Georgia Bulldogs 27-24? I mean, what is college football? What is going on? Sam: Yeah. I mean it's wild. I mean, I remember last week you and I talked about Georgia, Alabama, and obviously Georgia came out on top. But how, hey, both both these teams are both top five teams in the country. And that could still be the case, but both of them lost this week. Alabama lost to Tennessee, which I think was not necessarily a surprise, not what was highly predicted, but like people could see it happening. I don't think anybody saw this one happening. Honey It's Saturday: I also think but the one thing I will say about that is I think the way that Alabama lost this week was a little bit surprising. Sam: Yes. Yeah, I could agree to that. But I mean, Auburn, man, I mean, they they came to play, they they got down early and they bounced back and responded pretty well. for a first year to coach and just a a new team that's still kind of trying to find their groove. It was really impressive in a hostile environment in Athens. that I think was just a really good moment for that Auburn team and just the future of them the rest of the season and even just as the years go on, of just how to handle adversity. Georgia, Gunnar Stockton, I think, had his worst game def offensively that he's had. I mean, he was really sloppy with the football, had a costly fumble at the end that just I mean, Georgia was kind of getting down to the point where Auburn, Auburn had kind of started to blow the lead and Georgia was going to go down and maybe kick a field goal to win. And he fumbled and turned back around and Auburn kicked a field goal to win. but I mean, again, it sh goes to show just the SEC is just you beat up on each other. And if you don't show up to play on any given Saturday, you're gonna get beat. And that's what it was even going back to Tennessee game, there was a Penn State transfer who's on Tennessee now, Amari Campbell. And he said that's the difference between the Big Ten and the SEC. He's like, SEC, like, even if you're playing a team that's not ranked or who you're expected to be, like they can still beat you. And the Big Ten, that's not necessarily the case. So it just goes to show just how deep this conference is. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, I mean, I think all of college football is experiencing that leveling to a certain extent, but nothing like I think the SEC is just a whole nother world. I mean, it really is brutal. That's what I mean by the cannibalism in the conference. Like it's gonna be insane to look at the conference standings and the records by the end of the year. I really I I don't know what to expect. But I mean, full credit to Auburn. What a huge win for Goalish. Byron Brown was impressive. I mean, he was gritty. He's everything that you thought he was going to be coming from USF last year. I loved him at USF. Very competitive guy. He's got arm talent, but he's also an incredible runner. He's physical. He's tough. You saw all of those traits this week. I mean, they battled. They were down 14. They came back, tied the game, took the lead. They had a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter and they blew it. And it was a tie game. And they still stood their ground, forced that late turnover from Gunner. To your point, Gunner didn't. Definitely, in my opinion, had his worst game this year. Probably his worst game, I would argue, at Georgia. Like Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: two interceptions, critical fumble at the end of the game that ended up losing the game. Like, I think he'll bounce back. He's a better quarterback than that, but bad timing. And like you said, you gotta show up every single week. And to Auburn's credit, they took full advantage, massive win. They're four and two. They're the first team out in our top twenty-five rankings. So They they got everything ahead of them too, I guess. I mean, it's it's a crazy world we live in. Sam: Yeah. And they they they control their own destiny. in this last game that we have to talk about, just I was thinking about this as I was preparing for this segment. Our moment of silence from last week has delivered the moment of silence to the team they just beat, which is the Texas Longhorns, who have now lost two straight and Florida beat them twenty-eight-24. So I would ask that everybody Bow your heads, take off your hats, and just have a moment of silence for the Texas long. Thank you. offensively, it is just so confusing to me how Arch looks like this freak quarterback who makes some unbelievable throws and then just complete high school level quarterback play. Like I just don't I can't understand it. And that's that's I mean, their defense is Texas defense is really good. I mean, they keep them in games. Colin Simmons getting hurt was obviously a big, big damper on that defense as a whole. And I I don't know what the extent of his injury is, but offensively, Florida's good, but there's no reason they should have lost to Florida on Saturday. Honey It's Saturday: How about the quarterback change for Florida? You got thoughts on that? Sam: Yeah. For that dude to go in there and ball the way that he did in his first SEC start on the road against a top five, I I don't know what they were, top seven, top eight quarter team in the country and play the way that he did, that was really impressive. I mean, Jones was th or twenty two for thirty-five, one fifty five and two touchdowns. And he just had complete control of that offense. Like I think there's a serious question of maybe there's a quarterback change, but I loved the maturity that he had and is just throughout the game and even his press conferences, he's like, this is just another game. Like, yeah, it's my first start or whatever, but just kind of keep stacking them. And there I mean, Florida just again, they're confusing with the way they played the last two weeks against South Carolina and Missouri, but then they get bounce back and they're again, they're sitting there at four and two too. So it's they're right there right there in it. Honey It's Saturday: That's it's a resume with some serious blemishes, but also incredibly high highs. Like at the end of the day, they're sitting here with wins over Olmus and Texas. And then they're also they've got a win against an Auburn team who just beat Georgia. So that that wins looking a little better too. Like, I don't know, man. Florida's a little bit confusing, but this is massive for them. And Texas, yeah, like you just It might be time to admit the inconsistency is just what you get with Arch. Like, Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: yes, he's incredibly talented and he'll make a play. You can understand the talent and the hype. But he also, about every game now, will make a couple plays where you're like, What was that? What are you thinking? Who was that? Where was he throwing? Like, and you can see it too. Like, I've I don't I've noticed when you're watching him play, like you can see it before he makes a bad decision. It's like you can read him a hundred percent. Like you can watch him processing. And it's almost like like especially that deep ball he threw into double coverage was just an awful decision that was picked off in that Florida game. You can see it. Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: He's stepping up in the pocket and he's like trying to stop himself. I mean, he pumps it like three times. He's trying to Sam: Yeah. Honey It's Saturday: stop himself and he just couldn't stop himself. And next thing you know, it's a turnover. It's like It's a hard and it's frustrating to watch. and I mean, Sam: Yeah, very much so. Honey It's Saturday: dude, they're gonna have to figure it out because their schedule does not get easy from here. Sam: No, it's hard. I mean they probably have the toughest SEC schedule. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, I mean it's definitely up there. I mean preseason we all thought it was the tough schedule in the country, really. That in Oklahoma. So it's brutal. But apologizing, you know, Texas, we didn't want to make you our moment of silence, but that's back to back weeks losing to unranked opponents. Sam: Yeah. I mean it's it truly is just crazy to think that we just had two games that we barely touched on earlier in the week that turned into some of the biggest storylines of the entire weekend. Honey It's Saturday: That's why we love college football. Sam: that's right. And I must admit there is another storyline that I didn't touch on. And I I apologize. I lost again to Cameron and I didn't wear the hat Honey It's Saturday: no. Sam: throughout that entire segment. So that that's on me. I'll I'll regroup and I'll wear that on on this the the podcast preview in week eight. but just kind of want to look ahead of the the records and how everybody's sitting right now. Mitch is currently in the leaderboard with 41 and 20 on the year. Cameron is in second place, going 39 for 22, two 22 so far. I'm 37 and 24, and Keaton is sitting at 35 and 26. So from from top to bottom, there's about an eight point spread right there. still a lot of room. We're ha we're at the halfway point in the season. I've been really disappointed with myself and how many times I've had to wear the hat. So I'm looking for a bounce back week and not having to wear the hat. Honey It's Saturday: It's okay, man. It it it happens. And look, this has been a chaotic year of college football. So I it's hard to blame you for not having the greatest record. I mean, at the end of the day, we're all well, well, well above 500. So that's great. and there's plenty of ball left for for you to recover and bounce back. I'll take my position right now, being in P1 first place, pole position. but yeah, dude, there's a lot of ball left. So I take that. lightly and I I lock in and focus week to week. I also do want to touch on our locks of the week from this past week. I had the over Sam: Mm. Yes. Could Honey It's Saturday: in Oklahoma State Houston, which did in fact hit. So that's great. So I'm now two and two on my locks of the week. And then Sam, you want to touch on your lock of the week? Sam: Yeah, I took the under for BYU Notre Dame, which was forty seven and a half. obviously that did not hit. I think they got the total of fifty s fifty two. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah, it it yeah, it did go over. Sam: So it went over. So I'm now one and three on the year. So you will also be seeing Mitch with the soda later this week. as that is that is the soda on the line that I must provide to him. So Honey It's Saturday: So from that perspective, Sam had a little bit of a rough week, but let's not forget Sam. Before we let the people go and let have a great week and wait for us to come back again on a Thursday morning. You did crush it in the pick seven this week and you are in the lead. So just put that on the top of your mind and move forward. Next play. Sam: yeah. I mean if I went one and six in my pick seven and I lost the lock of the week, I would be disappointed. Tennessee still beat Alabama by sixteen. Honey It's Saturday: Yeah. Sam: Like nothing can take away that just cloud nine feeling of just three straight home wins against Alabama setting the standard for the rest of the year. I'd be lying if I'm not a little bit nervous about South Carolina this week, but I gotta take it. Honey It's Saturday: That's huge. One week at a time. All right, y'all. We really appreciate it. It was an absolutely amazing weekend of college football. We got plenty more where it came from coming up. So we'll be back with a preview episode for week eight this week. You guys enjoy the next couple days, lock in at work, get done what you need to get done so you can clear your mind and focus and get ready for this next weekend. God bless you guys, and we'll see you next time.
