- 0:05Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning, good morning, and welcome, love and welcome.
- 0:07Speaker 2: It's time now for car talk.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Brad dungeonsis guy just twenty I mean he brought friends,
- 0:13Speaker 1: lots of them back the whole dugout the.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Full studio this morning.
- 0:16Speaker 4: Welcome, gentlemen, thank you, thank you, have you having us? Yeah,
- 0:20Speaker 4: of course, well this is since nineteen forty one, we've
- 0:25Speaker 4: been sponsoring the Indians baseball program and barely proud of that.
- 0:29Speaker 3: That was one of the first things.
- 0:30Speaker 4: My grandfather did when he moved the family from Tonkawa
- 0:34Speaker 4: to Bartlesville was look for a team to sponsor. He
- 0:38Speaker 4: had been a young man in high school and went
- 0:42Speaker 4: to work at a Ford dealership, ended up playing on
- 0:45Speaker 4: a basketball team sponsored by the Ford dealer. Back and
- 0:48Speaker 4: I got a picture of he and two of his
- 0:51Speaker 4: brothers from nineteen twenty four and.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Ended up a few.
- 0:56Speaker 4: Years later coming back and he and his brother partnered
- 0:59Speaker 4: up became the dealer there at that dealership. And and
- 1:03Speaker 4: so he knew the impact that playing on a team
- 1:06Speaker 4: and the sponsorships could could really help, uh, you know,
- 1:11Speaker 4: the create that environment that that gives you guys some
- 1:15Speaker 4: the opportunity to develop your team, to develop.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Young men and and uh really, uh, you know.
- 1:22Speaker 4: It was it made him who he was. I know
- 1:25Speaker 4: he believed that. So that's that's the back story. And
- 1:30Speaker 4: then and I've got I'll let you guys introduce yourselves
- 1:33Speaker 4: and say who you are and.
- 1:34Speaker 3: What you do for the team. Sounds good. I'm I'm
- 1:37Speaker 3: Danny Perez.
- 1:38Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:39Speaker 6: I'll be the hitting coach, you know, hands on, hands
- 1:42Speaker 6: on guy, fungal guy, VP guy.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:46Speaker 6: Just try to be the most valuable source of knowledge
- 1:49Speaker 6: I can around the boys.
- 1:51Speaker 5: Yeah, my name is Lessandro Cruz.
- 1:55Speaker 3: I'll be Uh.
- 1:57Speaker 5: I'll be the pitching coach, and I also help with
- 1:59Speaker 5: the ting of the team. Just trying to put out
- 2:04Speaker 5: good pictures and work with those guys, help them build
- 2:07Speaker 5: confidence and found the strike zone.
- 2:11Speaker 3: That's important. Yes, Sir.
- 2:14Speaker 7: Tony Osborne, the manager of the Indians organization, just overall
- 2:20Speaker 7: overseeing everything, making sure everything is running smoothly. Great group
- 2:25Speaker 7: of coaches around us. So we're excited for the season.
- 2:28Speaker 7: It's gonna be fun.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it always is every summer in Barbosville. It's a
- 2:32Speaker 4: big deal around here.
- 2:33Speaker 3: It's our kind of a tradition long time. And you guys.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Just finished right out, So a week or two ago, yes, sir,
- 2:43Speaker 4: and got your teams pretty much well finished.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Yep.
- 2:47Speaker 7: We were waiting on a couple of guys to you know,
- 2:49Speaker 7: solidify that they were in. They all solidified, so we're excited.
- 2:53Speaker 7: We're gonna have an extremely talented group for both teams,
- 2:56Speaker 7: the Braves and the Indians organization. I think we had
- 2:59Speaker 7: close to eighty kids come try out, which was an
- 3:02Speaker 7: awesome number back the Brave, which yeah, yeah, we'll have
- 3:08Speaker 7: the Braves, Braves and the Indians. Shout out to coach
- 3:11Speaker 7: Kelly because he let us use his facility for the
- 3:13Speaker 7: tryouts and you know, he helps us out a ton
- 3:18Speaker 7: went really smooth, had a lot of talent to choose from,
- 3:21Speaker 7: and it took us a while to finalize the roster
- 3:24Speaker 7: because there was a lot of talent to choose from.
- 3:26Speaker 7: That's awesome, hard decisions to make. Well that, I guess
- 3:29Speaker 7: that's a good, good problem to have, always a good
- 3:32Speaker 7: problem together.
- 3:33Speaker 4: A competitive team and has some success and put out
- 3:37Speaker 4: a good product on the field.
- 3:38Speaker 3: So for sure, the crowd's out there to watch the
- 3:40Speaker 3: team play. For sure.
- 3:42Speaker 4: I know you're still working on your schedule, but you're
- 3:46Speaker 4: gonna have a good home schedule I suppose.
- 3:49Speaker 7: Yeah, well, we're gonna try to have a pretty heavy
- 3:52Speaker 7: home schedule so that way we can have a big
- 3:54Speaker 7: presence here in town and keep everything going.
- 3:57Speaker 8: D Bat likes to play here because of Stateium.
- 4:00Speaker 7: You know, everybody, every everybody likes to play in that stadium.
- 4:02Speaker 7: You know, it's it's a historic stage. Historic you know,
- 4:05Speaker 7: a lot of a lot of good things happened at
- 4:07Speaker 7: that stadium, and we want to keep that tradition alive.
- 4:10Speaker 4: It's so comfortable and the evening to go out there
- 4:14Speaker 4: in the summer with the fans blowing and the sun
- 4:17Speaker 4: setting and watch baseball is such a comfortable environment.
- 4:22Speaker 8: Definitely a glorious view.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a great view with the bark in the background.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Yes, I know you'll probably have the traditional tournaments that
- 4:33Speaker 4: we have here and anything else I planned or tell
- 4:36Speaker 4: us when those.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Are and how that.
- 4:37Speaker 7: Yes, sir, we'll still have the big Glenn Wingget Memorial
- 4:40Speaker 7: tournament like always, big fireworks show, you know, all that
- 4:43Speaker 7: stuff's gonna take place. We're going to try to in
- 4:48Speaker 7: the next couple of years try to host the American
- 4:51Speaker 7: Legion State Tournament here like we used to a couple
- 4:54Speaker 7: of different times. So we're going to really push to
- 4:56Speaker 7: do that again because I think that was a really
- 4:58Speaker 7: good thing and it brings a lot to the community,
- 5:01Speaker 7: you know, as far as monetary and just people people
- 5:04Speaker 7: come into town.
- 5:05Speaker 8: So we want to really pursue that also.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Awesome. Yeah, well, we've had a long history of American.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Legion obviously, way back to nineteen forty one, my family
- 5:16Speaker 4: supporting the team, and it's but waiting with the World
- 5:21Speaker 4: Series back a few years ago and different state tournaments.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a great place to have a tournament.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I think that.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Oh yeah, awesome idea. Yeah, it's gonna be awesome.
- 5:30Speaker 4: So tell us about the makeup of the team, guys,
- 5:34Speaker 4: what do you expect them to be?
- 5:36Speaker 3: Pretty good? It sounds like yes, yes, absolutely.
- 5:40Speaker 5: You know, we have guys that have played for us
- 5:43Speaker 5: before and a couple of new guys as well. But
- 5:48Speaker 5: as far as kind of the how we formed the team,
- 5:52Speaker 5: I think we're going to have a very talented, talented team.
- 5:56Speaker 5: We'll be able to fire on all cylinders from everywhere.
- 6:00Speaker 5: You know, outfields, outfield's good. We got some good catchers,
- 6:03Speaker 5: we got some good pitchers infielders and good hitters, which
- 6:07Speaker 5: I think would be solid teams that were putting out
- 6:10Speaker 5: both for the Braves and the Indians. We got guys
- 6:13Speaker 5: that played on the Indians last year, the Returners, and
- 6:17Speaker 5: we added a couple of new guys as well to
- 6:20Speaker 5: kind of fortify that and just continue to bring bring
- 6:24Speaker 5: good talent.
- 6:26Speaker 4: For people who don't know. Tell us how the makeup
- 6:29Speaker 4: of the teams. What are the age for the Braves
- 6:31Speaker 4: and the Indians and how does that work? You got
- 6:34Speaker 4: up to I think it's up to eighteen or nineteen
- 6:37Speaker 4: on the the Indians.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 6:42Speaker 5: The younger team would be the Braves and those guys
- 6:45Speaker 5: would be the sixteens and the seventeen year olds, and
- 6:50Speaker 5: then the Indians there will be the nineteen and under.
- 6:56Speaker 5: In the Indians, we would be playing in two different leagues,
- 6:59Speaker 5: which would be the American Legion League and in the
- 7:03Speaker 5: d BACK Collegiate League, which kind of good competition there.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Some of those are older, yes, yes, yes, they're pretty competitive,
- 7:13Speaker 3: they are.
- 7:14Speaker 7: And we're going to bring some guys in you know
- 7:17Speaker 7: that will just specifically be there for the d BAT
- 7:20Speaker 7: Collegiate League, you know, so we'll have our core American
- 7:23Speaker 7: Legion guys that will play and they'll also play in
- 7:26Speaker 7: the d BAT League, but we're also going to bring
- 7:28Speaker 7: some guys in specifically for the d BAT League for
- 7:32Speaker 7: the experience, you know, to help these younger guys, you know,
- 7:36Speaker 7: guide them through the experience of playing in the collegiate
- 7:39Speaker 7: level and also stay competitive in it. They were really
- 7:43Speaker 7: competitive in it last year, but we were really young too, We.
- 7:46Speaker 8: Had a lot of young guys, so we really.
- 7:48Speaker 7: Wanted to focus on bringing some some older guys in
- 7:52Speaker 7: to help with the d BAT stuff, to help guide
- 7:54Speaker 7: some of these younger guys in it.
- 7:56Speaker 3: So we're excited.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Awesome, Well we're to be doing it again and rest
- 8:02Speaker 4: to support the team and the community and the players.
- 8:06Speaker 4: I mean, to be on a team like this. Obviously,
- 8:09Speaker 4: they didn't just start playing baseball and they've been doing
- 8:13Speaker 4: it pretty much.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Their whole lives. I expect you guys had a similar path.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Us tell us a little bit of that about your
- 8:21Speaker 4: backstory and how you got it got to this point.
- 8:24Speaker 3: When did you start playing baseball?
- 8:26Speaker 6: Yes, sir, I started playing at the age of four
- 8:29Speaker 6: years old, so been playing the game a little over
- 8:35Speaker 6: or just about twenty years, you know, with the youth experience,
- 8:40Speaker 6: high school college and a little bit beyond college. So
- 8:47Speaker 6: my journey started in Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, Oklahoma.
- 8:53Speaker 6: I'm a New York City kid. I'm from Queen's born
- 8:57Speaker 6: and raised. So I came out New York City to
- 9:00Speaker 6: play baseball in Altis, Oklahoma, and then played my two
- 9:06Speaker 6: juco seasons there, had pretty pretty solid years, caught some
- 9:11Speaker 6: attention from some very good anais long story short. Came
- 9:17Speaker 6: to Oklahoma Wesleyan from my junior college program. Uh, and
- 9:23Speaker 6: that's how I landed in.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Bartlesville, K Yeah. I enjoyed a lot out here. You
- 9:29Speaker 3: like it? Oh, yeah, it's different from Queens.
- 9:31Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a little it's a little calmer.
- 9:33Speaker 3: It's a little calmer.
- 9:36Speaker 6: I definitely liked the calmness out here, the space, you know.
- 9:41Speaker 6: But and then played my thanks to COVID, played three
- 9:45Speaker 6: years at Oklahoma Wesleyan, had a great senior year, caught
- 9:50Speaker 6: attention from some independent ball teams. So it was blessed
- 9:54Speaker 6: with the opportunity to play three years of professional baseball.
- 9:58Speaker 6: So yeah, just just here to give back honestly, and
- 10:02Speaker 6: and and put out better young men into the world.
- 10:05Speaker 3: What makes you want to coach?
- 10:10Speaker 2: Man?
- 10:10Speaker 6: Just the game has molded me into the person I
- 10:13Speaker 6: am today.
- 10:14Speaker 3: And if.
- 10:16Speaker 6: I can just go out and help a couple of
- 10:18Speaker 6: young men achieve their goals, it's just too valuable, you know,
- 10:23Speaker 6: where it's it's tough to explain and put into words,
- 10:28Speaker 6: to be a stepping stone in these kids' journey and
- 10:31Speaker 6: uh man, it's I mean.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Those are so important. Yeah, just having a compass for
- 10:38Speaker 4: where I'm trying to go. And you know, sports is
- 10:41Speaker 4: a way to get that.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I see that and.
- 10:44Speaker 4: That business and you know, sometimes helping people find that
- 10:48Speaker 4: is really critical and helping them get going in a career.
- 10:51Speaker 3: And you know, it doesn't just stop with sports. It
- 10:54Speaker 3: goes all the way.
- 10:55Speaker 7: To care especially in baseball, you know, and we preach all,
- 10:58Speaker 7: you know to all the youth and you know, even
- 11:01Speaker 7: the older players. It's such a game of failure and
- 11:04Speaker 7: you can learn so many life lessons that you can
- 11:06Speaker 7: carry on everyday life through this game that you can
- 11:10Speaker 7: in other sports, you know.
- 11:11Speaker 3: And so that's what.
- 11:12Speaker 7: We really really instill is is the lessons that you
- 11:15Speaker 7: learn that they can use for the rest of their
- 11:17Speaker 7: entire life, you know, and be.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Successful in life.
- 11:20Speaker 8: And that's that's the main goal, is the success in
- 11:23Speaker 8: life if.
- 11:24Speaker 9: You do learn those lessons because you're not in their
- 11:26Speaker 9: game where you're you're you know that if even if
- 11:31Speaker 9: you're a good bad or you're you're, you're gonna miss
- 11:36Speaker 9: the time or something.
- 11:39Speaker 3: What about you?
- 11:40Speaker 5: Cruz So kind of similar path with Vannie started playing
- 11:46Speaker 5: baseball at a very young age, probably if I can
- 11:50Speaker 5: remember correctly, it was around the age of five. Baseball
- 11:56Speaker 5: is a Baseball is a big thing, you know, as
- 11:59Speaker 5: growing up and coming from the Dominican Republic, baseball is
- 12:03Speaker 5: a big thing. You know, it's something that it's kind
- 12:06Speaker 5: of I would say.
- 12:10Speaker 3: It's a culture thing.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:11Speaker 5: You go to every single family, every household in the
- 12:18Speaker 5: Dominican public, they play baseball. You know, it's it's awesome
- 12:23Speaker 5: grow up playing baseball since the age of five, Born
- 12:28Speaker 5: in the Dominican Republic, raised in New York City.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Kind of like Dan just live.
- 12:34Speaker 5: Yeah, gotta represent, gotta represent New York Yankees.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Uh, he probably doesn't like it. He's gonna be wearing
- 12:41Speaker 3: braids this summer, at least say not.
- 12:46Speaker 5: They're they're not the Atlanta braids. But no, Yeah, raised
- 12:52Speaker 5: in New York City, did all my school schooling in
- 12:56Speaker 5: New York City, graduated from a high school in New
- 12:59Speaker 5: York City. And then, like I said, similar path, almost
- 13:04Speaker 5: identical to Danny.
- 13:06Speaker 3: I'm just a bit older than he is.
- 13:08Speaker 5: First two years of college I go to Western Oklahoma
- 13:11Speaker 5: State College and out to Oklahoma.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Did you guys know each other?
- 13:15Speaker 5: We did not know each other?
- 13:16Speaker 3: Interesting?
- 13:18Speaker 5: Then don't play my two years there. Have a phenomenal
- 13:23Speaker 5: first first.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Year as a as a pitcher, Yes.
- 13:29Speaker 5: Sir, posted some pretty decent numbers as a as a
- 13:34Speaker 5: as a freshman in college, was able to participate in the.
- 13:39Speaker 3: College World Series.
- 13:40Speaker 5: First year, we ended up losing in the championship game,
- 13:43Speaker 5: got runner up to l s U.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Eunis.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Second year, another trip to the World Series. Have a
- 13:53Speaker 5: good outing out there, and then I get I get
- 13:56Speaker 5: recognition from Oklahoma Wesley and they ended up bringing me
- 14:00Speaker 5: on and have some good years with them too. Another
- 14:04Speaker 5: thirty year, another trip to the World Series.
- 14:06Speaker 3: And a lot of success, A lot of success.
- 14:10Speaker 5: Yes, good credit to the coaches that I had or
- 14:15Speaker 5: Western Oklahoma being coached by a gentleman called Kurt Russell.
- 14:20Speaker 5: You know he molded us to be find find ball players.
- 14:26Speaker 5: But more importantly, how to you know, carry yourself outside
- 14:29Speaker 5: of the field while still keeping that that baseball mentality,
- 14:36Speaker 5: it taking it into the outside world. As far as
- 14:39Speaker 5: you know, you you hustle, you show up on time,
- 14:45Speaker 5: you're respectful, but also you when when it's time to
- 14:50Speaker 5: get down to the nitty gritty, you get down to it.
- 14:54Speaker 5: Then played here under coach Parker. He's now Little Rock
- 15:00Speaker 5: Arkansas coaching there and another another fine.
- 15:07Speaker 4: That's the culture, as you said, created the coaches do
- 15:11Speaker 4: help create that. And congratulations to Wesley and for bringing
- 15:14Speaker 4: you guys to Bartlesville. That's one of the great things
- 15:18Speaker 4: about Bartlesville is is kind of a it's a unique
- 15:21Speaker 4: community for its size, but having the school, having the
- 15:26Speaker 4: big old companies, the corporations that have been here for
- 15:29Speaker 4: so long.
- 15:31Speaker 3: You know, it's you know, we've got a ballet and.
- 15:34Speaker 4: A symphony, and you know, the great programs not just baseball,
- 15:39Speaker 4: but in things like FFA and four h and and
- 15:43Speaker 4: other sports and the Boys and Girls Club, and you know,
- 15:47Speaker 4: there's a whole network of organizations and a community that
- 15:51Speaker 4: kind of wraps our arms around everybody and and creates
- 15:56Speaker 4: something that's bigger than it would be otherwise.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Said that, what about your storytelling?
- 16:02Speaker 7: So I just I've been here, born and raised here.
- 16:05Speaker 7: I don't have New York or backstory of New York City.
- 16:10Speaker 3: I met Cruise through.
- 16:13Speaker 7: I've been coaching for fifteen plus years, all levels of
- 16:16Speaker 7: competitive ball. I was actually looking for a pitching coach
- 16:20Speaker 7: from one of my sons. Met Cruise to a mutual
- 16:25Speaker 7: friend of ours that rest in peace, he Clint Williams,
- 16:30Speaker 7: got it, got in with Cruise. We hit it off
- 16:33Speaker 7: really well, really quick. We pursued the pitching coach deal,
- 16:39Speaker 7: and then also I was like, hey, I got a
- 16:42Speaker 7: competitive team, you want to come help me coach? He
- 16:45Speaker 7: started helping me coach, and then we started a baseball
- 16:48Speaker 7: organization here in town for the youth, top notch of baseball,
- 16:52Speaker 7: had it running. Our ideas aligned. Met Danny on a
- 16:57Speaker 7: flute deal, went to his house us on a service
- 17:00Speaker 7: call and ended up meeting him and then got to
- 17:04Speaker 7: talking about my buddy playing at oak Woo and he's like, well,
- 17:07Speaker 7: who's your buddy? And I told him Cruz and he's like,
- 17:09Speaker 7: I know him. And so then we hit it off.
- 17:12Speaker 7: I mean, and then we got another coach that coaches
- 17:15Speaker 7: with us. Heyesus kind of the same thing.
- 17:18Speaker 8: Uh, I mean, we're just all I mean we're all family.
- 17:22Speaker 7: I mean, we were really tightening our ideas Allline, you know,
- 17:26Speaker 7: on on baseball and our our goals for these young men.
- 17:31Speaker 8: So that's what makes it really exciting.
- 17:33Speaker 7: Having the coaching staff around, that's that's brought into the
- 17:36Speaker 7: same ideas.
- 17:38Speaker 8: So it's it's exciting. And that's how I met these guys.
- 17:41Speaker 3: That's awesome. I you know, it just makes me feel
- 17:43Speaker 3: really good.
- 17:44Speaker 4: I mean, the team has been through so much and
- 17:47Speaker 4: a lot of these years, and you know, I know
- 17:49Speaker 4: that they really needed some like reorganization and get get going,
- 17:56Speaker 4: and and it seems like it's in very good hand.
- 18:00Speaker 8: We appreciate that.
- 18:01Speaker 7: We want to keep it.
- 18:02Speaker 4: We've got a special guest here. I don't know what
- 18:05Speaker 4: this is, but it's Hey, guys, original Buffalo Dale is here.
- 18:12Speaker 3: It's been a long time Dan. He's wearing auls. I'm excited.
- 18:19Speaker 3: What you doing Dale?
- 18:21Speaker 10: Well, I've been traveling coast to coast with this book, Brad,
- 18:25Speaker 10: and I'm at the Tulsa Drillers all this week autographing books.
- 18:30Speaker 10: But they gave me a bunch of tickets to the
- 18:32Speaker 10: Drillers games this weekend, and I thought i'd come up
- 18:36Speaker 10: and just give them away on the air, Tom, can
- 18:38Speaker 10: we do this?
- 18:39Speaker 2: Looks like we are.
- 18:42Speaker 10: I've got four tickets for Saturday and four tickets for Sunday,
- 18:47Speaker 10: and all we need is the names and if you
- 18:50Speaker 10: want to however you want to do that at first callar,
- 18:53Speaker 10: second caller, third callar, we'll.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Hold up to after the show so I can answer
- 18:56Speaker 1: the phone and then we'll go ahead and do that
- 18:58Speaker 1: and I'll repeat it.
- 18:59Speaker 10: Brought my notepad and on their bread, I kind of
