- 0:39Hey, welcome to live taping of the Gill Athletics Connections
- 0:43podcast right here at UST CCCA. I don't know how I got talked
- 0:47into this, but it's live tonight, fellas.
- 0:49And ladies, no bleep buttons, no edits.
- 0:52We're going to see what happens today in today's interviews
- 0:55here. So the idea tonight is we are
- 0:57going to have coaches, other people in our industry.
- 1:01I've got some awesome people that make treadmills and relay
- 1:04meets and all that kind of stuff that we're just going to
- 1:06interview for five to 10 minutes at a time and just really just
- 1:08have fun right here at the convention here in Denver, Co
- 1:11And so Speaking of relays, we're going to kick this off with.
- 1:15Still my all time favorite track meeting.
- 1:17The whole world. And I'm not saying that just cuz
- 1:19he's right here. I'll say it all day, every day.
- 1:22And that is we have here the director of the Drake Relays.
- 1:25I've got Mr. Blake, Bold and Blake.
- 1:27Welcome to the show. Hey, thanks, Mike.
- 1:28Thanks for thanks for having me. Thanks for putting this
- 1:30together. This is really fun and exciting.
- 1:31Yeah, we'll see you in about the two hour mark.
- 1:34Yeah, how excited You still are two.
- 1:35Hours from now. I've got some water.
- 1:36I don't have hot tea. I need that which your
- 1:38experience with today. So Blake, kick us off here as we
- 1:42look into the 2022 USTFC CA. Convention here in Denver, Co.
- 1:55Thanks Mike. I saw kind of a cool
- 1:49announcement today coming from the Drake Relays, which I
- 1:51thought might have been a little unique.
- 1:53Tell us more about what happened in what you announced.
- 1:55Well, we're about 58 minutes now from the start of the technical
- 1:59symposiums. There are 8 sessions, 4
- 2:02disciplines, jumps, throws, sprints, hurdles and distance.
- 2:07And in each of those eight sessions, there will be a leader
- 2:11in our industry talking about their expertise and sharing with
- 2:14coaches. So we were able to partner with
- 2:16Sam to sponsor those to support the coaches and coaches
- 2:20education, but also to give an opportunity to share the news
- 2:24that we announced today. And we aligned this sponsorship
- 2:26with this announcement that we've restructured the
- 2:30University division of the Drake Relays with a a complete focus
- 2:34on performances for those university.
- 2:36Athletes now. Haven't compete.
- 2:38Not competed. Sorry.
- 2:40Coached at the Drake Relays and haven't intended many of them.
- 2:44You know the athletes. What I love about the Trek media
- 2:46is it is athlete focused at the Drake Relays.
- 2:49I mean it's really as a coach I really appreciated how much the
- 2:53athletes were taking care of. Tell us about this.
- 2:55This sounds very double down on athlete centric here on on the.
- 2:59Competition, Yeah, those things like clerking, you know,
- 3:02appropriate call times, you know, friendly officiating, if
- 3:05that's if there's such a. If you can use that adjective
- 3:08for that noun, we have very friendly officials that are
- 3:11focused on the student athlete experience and that opportunity
- 3:17to compete in front of 14,000 fans.
- 3:19And you know, you can win the drink relays.
- 3:21You're going to do a victory lap and a champions flag and we
- 3:23really celebrate those college athletes.
- 3:26But this is less about celebrating them and instead
- 3:29setting the table for them to maximize their performance.
- 3:31So, you know, for the first time in decades.
- 3:34We've committed to if necessary wind reverse 100 a hundred
- 3:38hurdles and 110 hurdle finals and and that's one of many
- 3:42different examples, you know so we're all detailed all those
- 3:46improvements at drakerelays.org and that announcement is out
- 3:49today but and and really what we've really done is some small
- 3:52tweaks to sprints, hurdles, distance but really revamped
- 3:57entirely the field events so the the jumps, the throws.
- 4:01And and and it's particularly the horizontal jumps in the
- 4:04throws, we're going to take 24 athletes to an open competition
- 4:09that's down from 32. So what that means is each
- 4:12flight of the prelims will have 12 athletes rather than 16,
- 4:17allowing these athletes to get a little bit better rhythm and and
- 4:19and have less waiting time between these three rounds of
- 4:22prelims. And then nine athletes will go
- 4:25to the final. Get get their chance to compete.
- 4:28But more than that we're in adding an Invitational
- 4:31university division in all of those events.
- 4:33So 9 athletes, you know and these we may not even see full
- 4:37teams, but already some coaches today that have international
- 4:40athletes and national caliber throws, particularly long
- 4:44throws, excited about the opportunity to come and know
- 4:47that they're going to get 6 attempts.
- 4:49And this also means. We'll have up to 18 collegiate
- 4:53athletes getting 6 attempts, 9 in the open and nine in the what
- 4:57we're calling the Champions section.
- 4:59You know what I love about this? The Drake Relays is now 100 and
- 5:02something years old. Which?
- 5:03I love 100 and 13100. And 13, I love that.
- 5:06And you're continually evolving, looking to get better every
- 5:10year. Yeah.
- 5:11What drives you to do that? As you sit in the seat that you
- 5:13sit in as the director of direct relays, how are you always
- 5:16constantly thinking, what's better?
- 5:17How can I continue to make this a better and greater experience?
- 5:21Well, the coaches, I mean, you know the student athlete is the
- 5:23focus and that's what these coaches do every single day And
- 5:27and they're incentivized to do that financially and otherwise
- 5:31and and they're focused on getting ready for their
- 5:33conference championships and the national championships and we.
- 5:37Our fans and we as a staff, that's what we want to be part
- 5:39of. We want to find not just the
- 5:41Midwest best, but the nation's best to come and show off in
- 5:44front of a sold out crowd. And and having these 9 finalists
- 5:47in the field events allows us then to to place it more
- 5:50strategically in the meet program.
- 5:52So we've never been able to do long throws on in our Friday
- 5:54night program where we've got a good crowd and good energy and
- 5:57it's later in the day because the sunsets and it's just gets
- 6:02gets dark in our throwing sectors.
- 6:04So for safety reasons, we've only ever thrown on Friday and
- 6:07Saturday afternoons or in the morning.
- 6:09So with with only nine athletes, 6 attempts, we're talking about
- 6:12getting that done in less than an hour and it's better for the
- 6:15athletes that they can get in, get amped and then get their six
- 6:18attempts alongside 8 other of the top athletes in.
- 6:21The country. So I just have one favor to ask
- 6:23of you. I feel like you might have this
- 6:25pull, so my favorite event in the entire world is the Shuttle
- 6:30Hurdle Relay. Oh yeah, you know, obviously in
- 6:32Iowa first of all shout out to Iowa.
- 6:34Yeah, has it as an actual event for your state meet.
- 6:36Love that. And it's a really famous well
- 6:39attended well celebrated event at the Drake Relays.
- 6:41Can we get that as an incident way event please, I just.
- 6:43Oh, we'd love that if the Drake Relays and I know who else loved
- 6:46his folks over in Indiana State. Oh yeah.
- 6:49Committed to it, and they do a terrific job.
- 6:51They come in to represent and it doesn't matter who's in that
- 6:53event. Don't count out Indiana State
- 6:55city wars, because they're in it to win it every year.
- 6:57That's hurdle you. That's right.
- 6:59That's right. Blake, thanks for being here,
- 7:01you know. End every interview tonight with
- 7:02what are you most looking forward to in 2023?
- 7:05I feel like I can answer for you, but I'm gonna let you
- 7:07answer. What are you excited for here in
- 7:092023 Trek season? Yeah, 20/20/2023.
- 7:12This change in university division and really reshaping
- 7:16the college section of the Drake Relays and seeing how coaches
- 7:19respond. And then the momentum we get
- 7:21from this day all the way to 2024, because right now.
- 7:25Coaches have set their schedule, as many of them, for 2023, so
- 7:28we're really talking partial squads and some of that.
- 7:31But there's already excitement about the 2024 Drake Relays and
- 7:35that reshaping the commitment to the university division.
- 7:37I love it. I love it.
- 7:38We're going to end every interview with a selfie man in
- 7:40here. You were the first one, the live
- 7:43event. Thanks man.
