- 0:35achievable framework. I can't wait for this
- 0:39conversation. So, let's jump in.
- 0:43Hello Cheri. Welcome to she speaks Life
- 0:46podcast. Thank you.
- 0:48It's so good to be here. Yeah, I am excited about this
- 0:53topic that we're going to dive into how do we get through
- 0:58loneliness and Do we do when we're feeling left?
- 1:02Out are not seeing. I think we've all been there
- 1:05before, and before we kick off with your story, I would love
- 1:10for you to share a life. First, a scripture verse that.
- 1:14You hold dear to your heart, okay.
- 1:17It's from the Amplified. So it's a it sounds a little bit
- 1:20different but it's just really meant a lot to me.
- 1:22It's from habakkuk 3:19 and it says the Lord God is my
- 1:26strength, my personal bravery and my Invincible Army me.
- 1:30Makes my feet like Hinds feet and makes me to walk not to
- 1:33stand still and Terror, but to walk and make spiritual progress
- 1:37upon my high places of trouble suffering and responsibility.
- 1:42Mmm, love that. That's a beautiful verse.
- 1:46So why do you hold that so dear to your heart?
- 1:51One is because I've just found myself in the corner.
- 1:55Afraid to move out. A lot of what the message is
- 1:58about. And what What this is saying, is
- 2:01no, no, God makes you God makes you to walk.
- 2:05He wants you and draws you to make that progress.
- 2:08And and those are all places. I think people can relate to,
- 2:11and especially, for me how we all been in trouble.
- 2:15Yes. Do we all have suffering to go
- 2:17through? Yes.
- 2:18And I have, oh, so much responsibility more than I can
- 2:21do. And so those those are the
- 2:24reasons why I have just clung to that verse because he will make
- 2:27me to walk. He will not let me stand still.
- 2:30Mmm. That's right.
- 2:31Amen. Okay, so you have a Blog and you
- 2:34write for YouVersion Bible app which is awesome and you have a
- 2:39couple of books out including the book.
- 2:43Can you see me now? Good news for the lonely, left
- 2:46out and less than so share with us a little bit about yourself.
- 2:51How long have you been writing? Oh, okay, I have a background
- 2:57and at the University. So I've been writing
- 3:01professionally for a couple of decades but about about the time
- 3:08we adopted our first adopted child was probably about 2005
- 3:132006. I really felt like it was time
- 3:16to come out of that environment and move home because you know,
- 3:20she we had a new baby and I already had a couple of kids and
- 3:23so I started writing my backyard to know what, you know, just
- 3:27trying to find my voice and what it was.
- 3:30I was thinking that God was going to have me do because it
- 3:32was so different and I did that for nine years.
- 3:36So I did that for nine years and finally when I got finished it
- 3:40was a Bible study, okay? And so I didn't know what you
- 3:44what do you do when you finish it?
- 3:45You know I know I do I knew what you did in the other Arena but
- 3:48this is a little bit different and so I went to my first
- 3:52writers conference there and that's how I got started.
- 3:54With that. Mmm so cool.
- 3:57And to tell our friend here that's listening.
- 4:00You have eight kids, right? Kids?
- 4:03Yes, I have two biological kids and then I have the first one we
- 4:09adopted as a baby from China. And the second one we also
- 4:12adopted from China, but she was nine, and she was on the special
- 4:15needs list. And so she's my special needs
- 4:18daughter, and then about four years into that.
- 4:23So in six years, we adopted Skits because then we got a sub
- 4:26sibling set of four with two girls in a set of twins.
- 4:30So yeah, it was crazy. It was really crazy for those
- 4:34years. Wow, that is great though all
- 4:38the adoptions and stuff. That's awesome.
- 4:41Okay, so let's talk about your story behind the book.
- 4:44Can you see me now? So what prompted you to write it
- 4:48and why now, Okay, personally it's personally my story.
- 4:56I also am married to, you know, the number one student mr.
- 5:00Everything then he went to med school and was mr.
- 5:02Everything and and I was just always Ike.
- 5:06I grew up feeling that way. Anyway and I was very shy, I was
- 5:10small. You know, I was never going to
- 5:12be picked for anything and so then you take all that baggage
- 5:17to college and it just sort of Has time to simmer, you know,
- 5:22then I took it onto my adult life.
- 5:24And so this is really the process that God used in my life
- 5:30to show me. That he saw me that he knows me
- 5:33that he hears me even when I feel like no one else in my life
- 5:37does and so then what I noticed. So I just kind of put that in a
- 5:43drawer because you just carry that with you all the time and
- 5:46so there was one day that I was finishing my graduate work.
- 5:50Work. And I was teaching at the
- 5:51University and I had a couple of kids at home.
- 5:53I mean, life was busy that I was having to drive back and forth
- 5:55about four hours to the university, to finish my
- 5:58research and so one of those and I live in Texas.
- 6:01So there's a lot of lengthy, you know, cow pasture kind of ranch
- 6:07you kind of land that you go through and one of these days I
- 6:12was just feel like what is wrong with me because I think that's
- 6:14our tendency we think, okay. If these are the all of the the
- 6:20Is that I'm getting. It must be me, you know?
- 6:22So I just did what you would probably do in the car by
- 6:25yourself out in the middle of nowhere.
- 6:27You just say out loud. Lord, what is wrong with me?
- 6:29What, what, what is it, I mean, can I fix it?
- 6:32I mean, I wanted me to go to a counselor.
- 6:34I mean what, and about 2 minutes later, you know, you're just out
- 6:38there. But I have driven this road, so
- 6:40many times so many times and I looked out and in this cow
- 6:44pasture, were a bunch of, you know, regular cow's, you know,
- 6:48Texas cows that are sort of Brownish red.
- 6:51And in the middle, was a zebra in the middle of the cow
- 6:54pasture. Wow, I just I was like and I
- 6:57just felt you know how you holy spirit is kind of gives you that
- 7:00sense. He was like, I just felt like he
- 7:03was saying, this is your problem.
- 7:06This is your problem. There is nothing wrong with you,
- 7:09but I've created you as something new and different, but
- 7:14you, you aren't you belong there?
- 7:16But you're going to look different and so I carried that
- 7:20Vision with may just so powerful to me personally and then I've
- 7:24got six daughters and I began to notice that they were struggling
- 7:29with some of the things same things because we've all been in
- 7:32middle school. So, you know, we understand and
- 7:35so I regionally wrote it for them and a picked out different
- 7:39readings. Because it's a setup in about 75
- 7:41reading. 75 days of different verses that focus on different
- 7:46things. And so I originally wrote them
- 7:48like for their 16th birthday. Birthday that we get 16 essays.
- 7:51And so, that's what I had the vision for it to be, but then,
- 7:54as I am in women's ministry, the problem is so, exponential.
- 8:02Even now after after the pandemic that the studies show
- 8:08that we are the loneliest population in the last 50 years
- 8:11on record and that in any given group, you're going to have
- 8:16about half your population who is struggling with these issues
- 8:18and So I thought it best to broaden it and because it really
- 8:25does. I mean, anyone who sees the
- 8:27title of the book so far is like, I don't necessarily say
- 8:31anything, but you can see on their face.
- 8:33They're just like, yeah, I really need that.
- 8:36Yeah. Right.
- 8:37This second, a universal predicament that we go through.
- 8:44Yeah. Now, do you think this
- 8:47loneliness is cause Buy more social media.
- 8:54Okay? Statistically, no.
- 8:56Okay. Was that has been a concern for
- 9:00that younger population, especially, but the, the people
- 9:04who seem to escape it, the most are your oldest population
- 9:09because they know how to network, they know how to make
- 9:11friends. So, in some senses, I think you
- 9:13can't. You can't measure that.
- 9:15So they're not relying on social media for their, for how they
- 9:19view themselves. But the rest of us, we do
- 9:22however, when you, when you look at the numbers, the numbers show
- 9:27that it's just across the board and it's not particularly that,
- 9:30that's not the variable that, that is the change.
- 9:34So, yeah, but I haven't to thank that.
- 9:36It does, it does tend to deepen the problem, mmm, or amplify it
- 9:43well and I'm thinking, you know, as us adults, when, you know, we
- 9:49all have to be in Intentional to get ourselves out there and do
- 9:52things with other people. And I think, you know, a lot of
- 9:57us are afraid of rejection, you know, like we don't like to be
- 10:01rejected or you know, we don't want to have our life be
- 10:06interrupted if we're busy, you know, coming this chunk of time
- 10:10out for a friend. So when you were writing this
- 10:14book was there a part of the book that was more difficult to
- 10:19write? Right.
- 10:20Then yes. The this this book came from a
- 10:26speaking event because I do speaking events and I had
- 10:28written this because it was called and no longer invisible
- 10:33or something like that. And so I hated doing that event.
- 10:36I was on my list of people could choose it and every time
- 10:38somebody chose and I hated it because it's so personal, you
- 10:41know? So when I first, when I first
- 10:43submitted this book I didn't put that in there.
- 10:48I just you know how you don't really want anybody to know what
- 10:51you have struggled with. And I mean, my story is not
- 10:55anything that's going to be on the 6:00 news, but it's a normal
- 10:58story, it's a normal relatable story, and I had just left it
- 11:03out. And so the feedback that I
- 11:06received was, you know, there's no soul in this and right before
- 11:10the pandemic, the week of the pandemic, when we all shut down,
- 11:14I had been invited to do. That event and when I got home
- 11:17and now I have all this time, you know, to think through
- 11:20things I just really sense. The Lord was saying that's the
- 11:24missing piece. It's so for me, the most
- 11:27difficult thing to write was the beginning because to get the
- 11:30reader to relate to me. And, and to come in close
- 11:34quickly. I needed to do that, it really
- 11:38was missing, and I think it has transpired so beautifully that
- 11:42it's very relatable. And but then it Moves.
- 11:45It moves out from it being me about me to about the reader and
- 11:51so, but the first part was the most difficult.
- 11:53I just didn't want it on the page.
- 11:56I'm just kind of a private person.
- 11:57I didn't want it there, but it needed to be there.
- 12:00Now, did you ever find yourself in Ministry or doing even maybe
- 12:06your job and feeling like you were being overlooked?
- 12:11Oh yeah, absolutely. Because, you know, I'm not
- 12:16especially my personality, I'm very melancholy, and I am not
- 12:21the, I'm not outgoing, I'm an introvert.
- 12:24And so I think I think that it would be easy to pass over me.
- 12:29So and also, I've just have a tradition of being shy.
- 12:31I'm I don't need, I can lead but I don't need to be in the front.
- 12:35I would feel more comfortable in the wallpaper.
- 12:38So yes, I have Absolutely felt the pain of that.
- 12:43Yeah. Have you learned anything for
- 12:47yourself anything new while you're writing the book?
- 12:50Sometimes that happens? We're just like, wow, where did
- 12:53this come from? Right.
- 12:56So when I was first thinking about these ideas, I was I was
- 12:59solving problems, right? So I was trying to pull in
- 13:02different things that that I had gone through or that I felt like
- 13:05my girls had gone through or were going to go through just
- 13:08trying to give them some. I wish I had known this.
- 13:12When I was your age kind of advice and then what I found was
- 13:19What we really needed was to see just like that visual I gave you
- 13:23with the zebra in the middle of the cow pasture.
- 13:25What if you what if your circumstances don't change, what
- 13:28if you stay in the same rotten place you know where you feel
- 13:33like you're not treated well or that you are overlooked because
- 13:37that's going to be the story of most of us.
- 13:39Most of the time God leaves us where we are because he's
- 13:42purposely put us there and we find that frustrating.
- 13:45And so what I wanted to do was let's see if God can put that
- 13:49together because that's reality and he did.
- 13:52So what we're just taking were mainly looking at James, the
- 13:56half brother of Jesus, because that's what he did.
- 13:58He did not leave. When all the others were going
- 14:00out, he did not leave. He stayed there and he was
- 14:04transformed to be sort of scene for all the right reasons.
- 14:10So I think that's probably something I learned just as I
- 14:13put it together was AA. Yes, we have a Biblical example
- 14:18of doing Exactly what we need to do in our own lives.
- 14:21And that's really helpful. Yeah, it is so good.
- 14:25Okay. In your book you suggest the
- 14:27reader to do a 75 day journey to experience transformation.
- 14:33Can you expand on that a little bit more?
- 14:37Yeah so the very beginning is going to be my story and kind of
- 14:41getting getting people to relate with me as you would want to do
- 14:48and then it begins to be readings so they one is longer
- 14:54than a traditional devotional so it's not going to be just three
- 14:57or four hundred words but it's going to hit on a point and then
- 15:01it's going to move like that. So what what we often do and
- 15:05this is the illustration I use in the book is a Lofton.
- 15:08We know there's a problem but we don't know what it is.
- 15:10We don't is it us? I mean it seems to be like it's
- 15:13me, you know. And so we will do something like
- 15:18put On it, and do t-shirt like a cute t-shirt because we feel
- 15:21good when we do that, right? When we have a new t-shirt, we
- 15:24just feel so good about that. It's cute, but it's not
- 15:27transformational. And so what what I want to help
- 15:31the reader do is, is not just settle for, for, you know,
- 15:35Plastering, their social media with verses or happy thoughts
- 15:40but truly experience moving from point A, to point B, and, and
- 15:45having a mechanism to get them there.
- 15:48R. And so that's what the 75j
- 15:51journey is about. It's not just a oh well, that
- 15:53was a nice book. No, this is a tool they can
- 15:56utilize. So that's what we're hoping for.
- 16:01So good. So what do you mean?
- 16:05Give us an example of like a step in the healing process when
- 16:12we maybe are being mistreated or we're not being seen, we feel
- 16:18lonely. I mean, give us a little example
- 16:21of what you would share as as wisdom, okay.
- 16:26One of the points that I think we often do this.
- 16:30Is that you and I we want to be liked, we want to be liked in
- 16:33our Circle. And what we, what we know about
- 16:39human relationships at this point is that we can only hold
- 16:43so many people in the in the Inner Circle, right?
- 16:46Okay. Some people some of us we want
- 16:48like eight best friends. Well, they don't fit in that
- 16:51Circle and we try to draw them in and we bring them in way too
- 16:55close and then they don't respond in that way.
- 17:00And And part of our issue is we've brought people in to our
- 17:04circles that have no business being in our Circle and
- 17:07sometimes I don't think we have the wisdom to know the
- 17:09difference. And so what we need to do is to
- 17:15use prayer to pray through, we go through, how many people you
- 17:21should have. I mean there's research that
- 17:23says that we can hold about 150 relationships, you know, kind of
- 17:27on our Target and they vary in closeness.
- 17:30From your inner circle to your just people you would never send
- 17:34to pick somebody up from the airport.
- 17:37No. So for those people and I think
- 17:39our, our error is we move people in and out of those circles that
- 17:44have no business being there. And so one of the things that we
- 17:47do is pray through that and I walk them through how might you
- 17:50discern. That about your own life and I
- 17:54found that to be super helpful. Okay.
- 17:57So, do you have a special Bible verse that just really resonated
- 18:03with, with this message that you wrote.
- 18:07Yes. So there there's one in Isaiah
- 18:12that talks about. It's basically leading the
- 18:16people to follow God. All right.
- 18:20And what he's telling the Them, he's telling them in a few
- 18:23different ways but just the key verse that came out to me,
- 18:27included words that said, come and see, so it starts out, come
- 18:32and see, but then towards the end it says Go and show Go and
- 18:37show Jesus in you. I think I've got it right here
- 18:41actually. Undermined.
- 18:42Yeah. Go forth and show yourselves,
- 18:44Isaiah, 49, 9, and that to me because it one at one point, you
- 18:49think am I right? Because Seems kind of
- 18:52egotistical and you know, self-center to, to want to be
- 18:57seen but what does God say? And and that verse says, Go and
- 19:03show you're not gonna you're not going to show you did.
- 19:05This is not this is not when we change our hair color and we're
- 19:09really loud. We wear weird clothes.
- 19:11I mean it's not for us that it purposes do that if you want to.
- 19:14Hey, if that is your Vibe, go for it.
- 19:17But we don't want to use Aesthetics or social media or
- 19:20anything like that. To be seen for who we are.
- 19:26That is the work that God does, but he wants us to be seen, he
- 19:29absolutely calls us to be seen, you know, the whole, why would
- 19:32you, you would not hide a lamp under a bushel, you know, that
- 19:35kind of thing is sitting on a hill.
- 19:36It needs to be seen and that's what we are.
- 19:39And and this is a way to help internalize that to to move,
- 19:44people out in a healthy Manner and to be seen for all the right
- 19:49reasons in all the right ways. Yeah.
- 19:52Yeah to see God to see Jesus Through us.
- 19:56That's that's what it's all about.
- 19:58I love that. Okay, so what are some
- 20:01challenges? You can share with us as being a
- 20:04writer like having eight kids and you have a Ministry called
- 20:09she yearns and you're doing all this writing.
- 20:12So what are some challenges that you face?
- 20:17Well, basically 24 hours in a day.
- 20:20Yeah. And it's loud.
- 20:22It's really loud with all of those people and especially for
- 20:26covid. They all came home.
- 20:27Some of them had gone to college or whatever and they all came
- 20:31home. And so now, we were home for a
- 20:33year and a half. So that that was a long, long
- 20:37time, especially, but just finding the time to do, all the
- 20:43things God has called me to do. And I don't think that's That's
- 20:46unusual. Just my things are different.
- 20:48You know I think every person will struggle with finding that
- 20:51kind of time to be very intentional.
- 20:54There is nothing wasted, you know?
- 20:56And and really just getting up every day and being intentional
- 20:59about that sometimes some Seasons call for me to get up
- 21:02super early before. Anybody needs me and other
- 21:06Seasons. I just stay up late but
- 21:08sometimes there's there's really not enough time and so I have to
- 21:12make extra time. So we've kind of we don't watch
- 21:15TV we A lot of things that we've already cut out, we don't go to
- 21:18sporting events outside of the ones, our kids are in and we
- 21:21don't make all of those. It's just, we just can't,
- 21:24there's just too many individuals.
- 21:27And there's too many places of responsibility God has called us
- 21:33as a family and so that has been a huge challenge but God has
- 21:38been faithful every time. I mean, I wrote that first book,
- 21:41when we only had six kids, who did not speak English, I mean it
- 21:46Was crazy. But God is always been faithful
- 21:49to give me the time and the space that I've needed in his
- 21:54timing. So I've moved very slowly.
- 21:56I I can't just dedicate all of my time to this and and that is
- 22:01okay, because that's not what God has called me to.
- 22:03He's called me to be a mom and a wife and and into Ministry and
- 22:08all of those have to work together as he does deems them,
- 22:12not as I prioritize them and so that I think is the biggest Goal
- 22:16is, is getting myself before him before the day gets started
- 22:22said, okay? What do we need to do?
- 22:25What is on your agenda? You know, here are the things
- 22:27that I'm thinking and just truly work through those when I'm
- 22:30praying, and then whatever gets done.
- 22:33I'm just going to accept that, that was his agenda, and then,
- 22:38we'll start over tomorrow. And that's really how it has to
- 22:41work for me. Yeah, I agree.
- 22:45Okay, so, What would you? I think this would be a great
- 22:48take away. What would you share with our
- 22:52friend here who's listening? And is going through a season of
- 22:56loneliness is feeling like she's not being seen.
- 23:01She's maybe being mistreated but just cannot get past it can't
- 23:08overcome. So what would you share with our
- 23:12friend who is going through that?
- 23:15What I have found? Aunt and I, you know, I didn't
- 23:18realize I was doing this but I'm on the other side of it.
- 23:23And so now I can look back and say, okay, what?
- 23:25What my mom, what might be effective.
- 23:28And so you have to fight for it because our natural instinct is
- 23:32to just, you know, go back into the corner and and be silenced.
- 23:39And so the I think the number one thing that we have to get
- 23:43centered is how we've Got some, we might have some bad theology.
- 23:48Some theology, like, one of the things that I believe, and I
- 23:51grabbed the preacher's daughter, but I believed that somehow I
- 23:55latched onto it, like, Jesus loves all the children of the
- 23:58world, you know, that kind of thing.
- 24:00Then I was one of the many and not one of the Chosen and so
- 24:03that he had like this super Christian club, that doesn't
- 24:06make any sense. It's not biblical, but I had
- 24:08latched on to that belief for years and I lived it out and
- 24:12until I got into the word of God and red What what he says and
- 24:17who it's to, I didn't know and I couldn't change those beliefs
- 24:22because I wasn't biblically aware of what he said.
- 24:26And so I think the biggest takeaway for me is that don't
- 24:32Don't stop seeking, you know, I think if when you feel that way,
- 24:38God did not design us to be sitting underneath something
- 24:42hidden. I mean, Jesus says that.
- 24:45And so if we know that, if we know that he has individually
- 24:49designed us in our sphere of influence for a purpose, other
- 24:53than sitting on the side watching it happen, then we need
- 24:58to keep seeking that. That would be the number one
- 25:01thing I would say. Say don't give up.
- 25:02Don't give up the fight. Yeah, so good.
- 25:06What do you real quick? I obscurity came to mind, like,
- 25:10I know that there's a little bit of that season where God just
- 25:13kind of puts you in that obscurity to prepare.
- 25:19You know, what can you share on that?
- 25:23That's kind of like, what I was I was sharing with you earlier
- 25:25that I felt like God was calling me to write.
- 25:29I already had a PhD but but I spent nine years in the backyard
- 25:33and a little bitty. By myself.
- 25:36Yeah, and you know, no one is going to think.
- 25:39I bet she's going to be a writer someday.
- 25:41You know. No one, no one had any
- 25:43aspirations for me, whatsoever. And so, I totally understand
- 25:47that. And what I would suggest to the
- 25:50person who who is doing that, because it creates an emptiness,
- 25:55you know, because you feel so insignificant is just pray your
- 26:01guts out that God would feel every crevice.
- 26:04Does he only alone? Can fill those empty places that
- 26:08are created by other people, but he alone can feel them when we
- 26:12cannot fill them by other relationships.
- 26:15And so during that season, I would just absolutely, you know,
- 26:18throw yourself in more than you might normally, if all you all
- 26:21you can do in that season is praying the car on your way to
- 26:24whatever. And you know, do your, do your
- 26:26devotional and and show up occasionally to church just just
- 26:31up your game. Okay.
- 26:33And seek God, More than you did before, because he's the only
- 26:37way that we're going to experience the fullness that he
- 26:42has for us. And so that would be the most
- 26:45important thing in your obscurity.
- 26:46You just forget everybody else and just latch on to who God
- 26:49says, you are and know what that is.
- 26:52I didn't know. And so that's that's what I
- 26:55think that that I would do and it and I needed to repeat it.
- 26:58I needed to say, to myself, I had to write it on a card and
- 27:02put all these verses on the Carter God, says, I'm adopted.
- 27:04I am chosen. I am forgiven, I am redeemed.
- 27:06You know, all those kind of things especially from Ephesians
- 27:091 and I just had to, I think I wore a bracelet for 13 years
- 27:13that said believe God because I was believing my own thoughts
- 27:17and everyone else's opinion over myself.
- 27:21And what I really needed to do was believe what God said about
- 27:24me and who he called me to be and until we stop playing those
- 27:28tapes and getting in our head what other people have assessed
- 27:32us to be then And we are not going to be victorious, but if
- 27:37we can get in our head who he says, we are, we will be changed
- 27:41and we will get through it so good.
- 27:43Amen. Thank you.
