- 0:04Nicky: Welcome to Thrive in Business Together with Nikki and Ness.
- 0:11Ness: We would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of country, the Yagura and Wurundjeri people of Brisbane and Melbourne respectively, where Nicki and I both work and live.
- 0:21Ness: I'm just going to come out and say it.
- 0:28Ness: Our guest today, mal Brown, is kind of a business unicorn.
- 0:32Ness: That's because she has the theory.
- 0:34Ness: Mel is an award-winning ex-accountant and ex-financial advisor who's helped thousands of business owners grow their business during her almost 20 years of owning her own business.
- 0:44Ness: But she also has a life experience.
- 0:47Ness: Did you know that less than 5% of women will start a seven-figure business?
- 0:52Ness: Mel started not one, not two, but three seven-figure businesses in three totally different industries.
- 0:59Ness: Her training has helped thousands of people develop their own tailored financial mix of everything they need to place their energy into and nothing that they don't, so that they can reduce their overwhelm, increase their confidence and walk away from the financial and business merry-go-round that they're on.
- 1:16Ness: Mal's passion is to increase the financial literacy of women and, in doing so, to help create your financial confidence and your wealth.
- 1:25Ness: In our chat today, we covered off so many valuable aspects, from creating personal wealth, diversifying income and knowing what the important numbers are to increase profitability in your business.
- 1:37Ness: You're going to gain so much from this episode alone.
- 1:41Ness: I can't wait for you to listen.
- 1:42Ness: Let's go.
- 1:44Ness: We talk a lot here about breaking cycles and I know, Mel, that you've worked with thousands of women over a number of years.
- 1:51Ness: I'm really curious what cycles do you notice that women get stuck in that hold them back from creating wealth so many?
- 2:01Mel Browne: So they're loops that I feel like that we get caught in If we look at blokes and I hate generalizations, but we'll just play them here so if I talk to blokes, often they're full throttle let's just get in here and do it quickly and make it happen.
- 2:14Mel Browne: That's their language, whereas women we kind of get stuck in our head and we overthink it and we get that paralysis by analysis and often it's those voices that tell us you just want to be a good girl or a nice girl.
- 2:27Mel Browne: So, for whatever reason it is, or we don't want to bet the house or we think it's selfish, so we overthink and we press pause.
- 2:36Mel Browne: So as a result, we play smaller.
- 2:39Mel Browne: And I'm not suggesting the blokes have it all wrong.
- 2:41Mel Browne: All I'm suggesting is that I absolutely see two very different cycles that men and women can get caught in and that natural trepidation can actually mean that we're great investors or we're great in business because we're purposeful and because we think things through.
- 3:00Mel Browne: But it also can stop us from acting and really hold us back.
- 3:05Ness: I can relate to that so much, even through my experience over the years and having worked with you a couple of years ago and having this whole point in time where my early 50s going, I really want to look at wealth creation and retirement and the beliefs that I had that I don't even know where I learnt them from, just societal parents, the whole thing around.
- 3:29Ness: You've got to pay your mortgage off, and then the biggest thing I remember you saying is you can't eat your house, and so that opened my mind to other possibilities around investing in shares and property and utilising the equity in our home to be able to do that with, and so I really resonate with what you're saying in relation to.
- 3:52Ness: For a long period of time, that fear helped me back from doing anything, but then, once I'd made the decision and shifted that mindset, I can see how that really helped me, because I was Thara and I did seek support from the people around me who were experts in that area, that I could trust and listen to the right people rather than the media.
- 4:14Ness: That's going.
- 4:15Mel Browne: Oh look, everything's turning to hell in a hand bucket and the media will always say that because they want to sell papers, they have clickbait headlines and I think particularly I work with a lot of women in their 50s where it's that scarcity of oh my gosh.
- 4:29Mel Browne: But I have to make that decision now and I'm never going to be able to pay it off.
- 4:32Mel Browne: I just have to concentrate on paying it off.
- 4:35Mel Browne: But why?
- 4:37Mel Browne: Where do we pick up that message from?
- 4:39Mel Browne: Why do we have to be debt-free when we retire?
- 4:41Mel Browne: Like there's so many things?
- 4:43Mel Browne: I think we need to unlearn and figure out what's actually right for me, which I love.
- 4:48Mel Browne: You've done that work.
- 4:49Ness: Absolutely, and even Nicky's on that journey now.
- 4:52Nicky: I certainly am, and I remember that conversation with Ness as well that that was a really pivotal moment, and what I'm hearing in this and loving about this is that it's bring awareness to your natural strengths, leverage those natural strengths and be aware of how they might be holding us back.
- 5:09Nicky: What is the downside, what is the pitfall for that, so that we can accelerate, and not even accelerate, but progress and move forward and unlearn.
- 5:18Nicky: I love that thinking about what do I need to unlearn right now?
- 5:22Nicky: Another really important, impactful piece of advice and that you've given in the work that you do now.
- 5:30Nicky: I, too, have been following and doing.
- 5:32Nicky: I've done FAP, which is amazing, and there's just constant financial adult planning for everybody, for those following along.
- 5:39Mel Browne: We made the mistake of using that acronym a long time ago.
- 5:43Mel Browne: It's why we call it MSAP now.
- 5:46Nicky: I didn't realise, and that is good to know, don't?
- 5:50Nicky: Google will make it really easy and put links in the show notes for you all.
- 5:54Mel Browne: History will become very problematic if you Google FAP.
- 6:00Nicky: I feel like I want to Google it Just have to hear it.
- 6:03Ness: Put it on a private browser I love that.
- 6:09Nicky: Okay, get back to my thought.
- 6:11Nicky: Yes, that's right.
- 6:12Nicky: One of the great pieces of advice that you give is to find seven streams of income Because again, we are looking at the cycles that we're breaking from a money mindset point of view and archetypes and you look into that.
- 6:25Nicky: You have some great resources around that, and then also the strategic, more practical planning tools and those sorts of resources and that's really stuck with me the seven streams of income.
- 6:36Nicky: Can you share a little bit more about what that means?
- 6:39Nicky: Yeah, that looks like.
- 6:41Mel Browne: So when people think about building wealth, often they think of a number I need to have a million dollars, or I need to have five million dollars.
- 6:49Mel Browne: They're often thinking of the number that they have to get to, as far as the amount in their superannuation or their wealth.
- 6:56Mel Browne: What people don't often think about and it's an alternative view is how much income do I want to generate?
- 7:03Mel Browne: So Lorsie, who I work with, who's worked with me for 14 years, she's all about building wealth and then selling it down.
- 7:10Mel Browne: She's very comfortable with selling it down, so she's after a number, so a number of assets.
- 7:15Mel Browne: Personally, I'm after income streams.
- 7:18Mel Browne: So I once read that most millionaires have seven streams of income and when I found that out, I was so motivated which was my way of learning and at Decerna, which is my money type mindset to figure out how I could make that happen for myself.
- 7:34Mel Browne: And if you're listening, you might be thinking about how many I have your wages, one your business might be, one consulting, rent, dividends, royalties there's so many different streams of income you can have, but personally, what I'm motivated to look for at the moment is to add more and more passive streams, because that means the more you have them or choice that you have.
- 7:55Mel Browne: And it means when we all started COVID not when we all started COVID, but when COVID started a lot of people realized how at risk their income was because they either had our wage or us, our business income stream, whereas by having multiple income streams, if one is turned off or one becomes shaky, you're not as stressed because you're then reliant on many more.
- 8:18Mel Browne: And that's my fear.
- 8:19Mel Browne: For many people is they have their wage and some super and that's it, and we want to just have some diversification in there.
- 8:25Mel Browne: So we have choice.
- 8:27Ness: Absolutely, and I think that's really important.
- 8:30Ness: We talk certainly through starting a business and listening to various mentors and reading books over the years.
- 8:37Ness: We talk about different income streams within our business so that we're not just putting all our bags into one basket.
- 8:43Ness: But what I love about what you're saying there is it's actually broader than that.
- 8:46Ness: So even if and I think of for myself I run a business obviously with Nikki, and then I think of my sister who is employed and receives a wage, and so we're in different scenarios, but for each of us there still could be more income streams than just that one revenue point.
- 9:06Ness: And that's probably the distinction that I didn't have going into business.
- 9:09Ness: I mean, oh yeah, we're cool, we've sort of got this or this or this going on, but really it's a much bigger picture and I think that's been my biggest learning over the years that I've been in business, especially through the roller coasters of the highs and lows of some years, have been amazing.
- 9:24Ness: Some years have been really really hard and unlearning the cycles that and, I guess, the patterns of behavior that were very much in the moment and rather than thinking through, well, how could I take if I had a good year and I've saved money.
- 9:40Ness: How can I make that money work for me, rather than putting it into buying courses and this and this and that, or saying yes to all the things?
- 9:50Ness: That is just going out and nothing's coming back in return, necessarily.
- 9:55Ness: So do you see that in the way that that's a significant change, that of mindset people need to make in business?
- 10:04Mel Browne: Absolutely.
- 10:04Mel Browne: And what I was honest to count in in a formal life and what I saw with business owners is often they're so focused on business that they're not focused on building wealth.
- 10:13Mel Browne: So it's exactly what you just said, ness, that I just need to concentrate on that and building income streams.
- 10:19Mel Browne: And also, they think their business is their retirement.
- 10:22Mel Browne: When I sell that, then that will be my retirement money.
- 10:25Mel Browne: But I used to say to them well, let's absolutely prepare your business for sale from every year that you're in it, so that it's we used to call it being exit ready at any time.
- 10:35Mel Browne: But you want that to be the cherry on top, you don't want it to be the whole cake.
- 10:39Mel Browne: So you want to build other income streams, you want to be contributing to super, and business should simply be one of those things, not all of them.
- 10:48Nicky: That is definitely such an eye opener and a great cycle to break for anybody listening, myself included, and I would love to touch on you mentioned a little bit earlier around the negative news cycle media.
- 11:01Nicky: Obviously there's a lot about the economic uncertainty, recession, all of that and one of the things that I noticed that successful business owners and leaders it's not getting consumed by that.
- 11:14Nicky: If we are all too much to pray for these news cycles, then we're in a really you can get in a really dark place really, but then we also need to know what we need to know.
- 11:25Nicky: So what suggestions do you have to know, or maybe suggested resources or sources, or what are your tips to know enough, but not so much that we get pulled down by it.
- 11:36Mel Browne: I can't agree more with that.
- 11:38Mel Browne: So I see it.
- 11:39Mel Browne: As you know, the Matuitas are playing.
- 11:41Mel Browne: We've got the soccer World Cup at the moment, so I'm not into soccer.
- 11:48Mel Browne: I got me.
- 11:48Mel Browne: Oh, clearly I'm watching the dancing.
- 11:50Mel Browne: I watched half of the Matuitas game the other night.
- 11:53Mel Browne: I say that I'm the reason the game turned around because I started watching and I'm totally excited.
- 11:57Mel Browne: Yeah, so I'm getting used to football.
- 11:59Nicky: Saturday you've got to watch.
- 12:00Nicky: On Saturday.
- 12:03Mel Browne: Oh, you've got to watch, they're just going to have to get through so I can watch the next one.
- 12:07Mel Browne: But I see it as you want to understand both the game that you're playing and the field that you're playing on and the conditions that you're playing under.
- 12:16Mel Browne: So no point me as a netballer, which is my background, I can't walk onto a soccer pitch and start grabbing the ball and throwing it around.
- 12:24Mel Browne: It's just not going to be helpful.
- 12:25Mel Browne: But also I want to understand the conditions.
- 12:28Mel Browne: So is it going to be icy, is it going to be wet?
- 12:31Mel Browne: And when it's an early morning, is it going to be super hot?
- 12:33Mel Browne: Because then I can prepare for those.
- 12:35Mel Browne: If we look at the Olympics, my husband works with Jess Fox.
- 12:37Mel Browne: They do the same.
- 12:38Mel Browne: I'll go to him.
- 12:39Mel Browne: It's raining.
- 12:39Mel Browne: Are you really going to training?
- 12:40Mel Browne: He goes yes, honey, if it rains, they have to compete.
- 12:44Mel Browne: So therefore they need to train in the rain.
- 12:46Mel Browne: It's the same as business owners.
- 12:48Mel Browne: Yes, we want to understand the field that we're operating on and the particular game we're playing, but we also need to understand the conditions we're operating under, but understanding as well.
- 12:58Mel Browne: Those conditions aren't constant.
- 13:00Mel Browne: They're going to be ever changing.
- 13:02Mel Browne: So we want to be careful who we're listening to, but we definitely need to understand what's going on.
- 13:08Mel Browne: So, for example, I would not be looking for clickbait headlines and I wouldn't be going to one of our sensational papers in order to get that vibe for what's going on.
- 13:17Mel Browne: Having said that, even a reputable paper so that Australian Financial Review ran an ad two weeks.
- 13:23Mel Browne: So ran an article a couple of weeks a week ago that said Australians were on the brink of financial collapse.
- 13:28Mel Browne: Based on one question they asked, which was if you had an unexpected bill of $3,000, would you struggle to pay it?
- 13:36Mel Browne: And I want to suggest that anytime in the last 20 years you would struggle to pay it.
- 13:40Mel Browne: So we need to not even just look at the headlines but understand what the article is actually saying, but where you can get great information about what conditions you're playing.
- 13:52Mel Browne: Your bank will have economists that send out every quarter a snapshot of what's going on.
- 13:58Mel Browne: So one of the banks that I banked with is the Nationalist J Bank.
- 14:02Mel Browne: They released last month or the month before what happened for the previous quarter and it's so helpful to look through.
- 14:09Mel Browne: So, for example, some of their statistics were that almost half of Australians have cut back on small luxuries like coffee, et cetera.
- 14:17Mel Browne: A third of us were driving less because we wanted to save on petrol.
- 14:21Mel Browne: Half of us had stopped travelling, and yet you look at Instagram.
- 14:25Mel Browne: You just presume everyone's travelling you do and yet 22% of people are being really diligent in studying who they're going to spend, with Westpac, for example, brings out a card tracker so you can track the actual spending of people.
- 14:39Mel Browne: So it's choosing to find the data you need to understand, but being really careful how you consume it, because the thing that I know at the moment is recessions bandied around a lot.
- 14:50Mel Browne: I was on a panel the other day and the MC said oh, so we're in a recession at the moment, and I just put up my hand and went, oh, we're not.
- 14:56Mel Browne: And yet there's a lot of misunderstanding around what actually is happening.
- 15:00Mel Browne: Inflation is high, people are reducing their spend, interest rates are going up.
- 15:06Mel Browne: It is absolutely affecting customer spend, but customers are still spending.
- 15:10Mel Browne: Businesses are still spending.
- 15:12Mel Browne: So we, as business owners, need to understand how to be great at business, but also we need to be prepared to stand out and not to be lost in this sea of sameness, because if a business is trying to, as a consumer is trying to compare five different businesses and you will sound talk and price exactly the same.
- 15:31Mel Browne: Ultimately, they're going to buy based on price, which is a really dangerous run to the bottom.
- 15:36Mel Browne: So you want to be making sure that we're expressing our values, we're getting pricing psychology right, we're talking to our customers and really getting the basics right.
- 15:46Ness: That's such great advice and I love the whole.
- 15:49Ness: What is it?
- 15:50Ness: A metaphor around the soccer game and then really relaying that to the workplace and how you view it, because, let's face it, so many people get their truth from places like Facebook.
- 16:01Ness: Yeah absolutely.
- 16:05Ness: Or the news or whatever it is.
- 16:06Ness: So it's really that sameness around.
- 16:09Ness: Listen to the people that you trust, which is what I was saying earlier.
- 16:13Ness: Find your resources out there the mentors, the authors, the financial experts that you trust and align with, and who speak the truth and give you facts in what they're talking about.
- 16:27Ness: So that's such great advice.
- 16:31Nicky: Are you stuck in the busy trap or on juggle street being all things to all people despite having a team?
- 16:36Nicky: Or perhaps your business is feeling chaotic?
- 16:39Nicky: Do the mini business health check to get 10 strategies in under 10 minutes so you can get time, freedom back, experience, peak performance and finally leverage smart growth in your business.
- 16:50Nicky: Head over to b2businesstogethercomau.
- 16:54Nicky: Forward slash health check and, if you're ready for us to help in a more hands on way, email us at hello at businesstogethercomau and we'll set up a time to chat.
- 17:06Ness: One of the challenges that we talk to business owners about can be where they've started the business and they've got a team but the person they're not paying is themselves because there's not enough profit in the business.
- 17:19Ness: Email me on my high horse.
- 17:21Ness: But that is not okay.
- 17:24Ness: It's not okay that we do that because there's so many flow on impacts that has to us as business owners and that heading towards burnout and all that kind of thing.
- 17:33Ness: It's a very dark spiral downwards.
- 17:35Ness: So my question to you for those people out there who perhaps think that but my business is turning over a lot of money and then get to the end of the year and to the financial year and realize that well, actually it's not making a lot of profit what's the levers we need to look at in business that perhaps we've got blinkers on and can't see, and in order to flick that switch and say, right, this is about a profitable business, not just focused on an income amount.
- 18:06Mel Browne: I could sit here and go I've got a million dollar business and you go, wow, that's so cool, but my profit could be $20,000.
- 18:13Mel Browne: It's not a great business.
- 18:14Mel Browne: So it's important to understand is that sales is humanity, profits is sanity and cash is your reality.
- 18:20Mel Browne: So if I'm looking at metrics, I want to know every single month what my sales are, what my profit is, what my cash in the bank is.
- 18:27Mel Browne: To be honest, I want every day, if I'm a fast growing business, my cash in the bank, or at the very least, weekly.
- 18:33Mel Browne: I still open my bank account every day and just have a look right what have I paid?
- 18:37Mel Browne: What's going out?
- 18:38Mel Browne: Great.
- 18:38Mel Browne: So we want to understand those every single month.
- 18:41Mel Browne: But, more importantly than that, we want to understand what feeds into that.
- 18:45Mel Browne: So there are about eight, nine, 10 numbers before sales, retention leads, conversion rates, average sale value, number of times your customers do business with you.
- 18:55Mel Browne: So it's really important to understand what those numbers are and what activity I can be doing to affect those numbers.
- 19:02Mel Browne: So, for example, if a business is been operating for more than 12 months, you've got to have a retention strategy and you should know your attention rate.
- 19:10Mel Browne: If you can increase your retention rate by 5% tiny amount, you increase your profitability by 25%.
- 19:18Mel Browne: My ridiculous stat.
- 19:20Mel Browne: But if you aren't tracking those numbers, if you're not looking at your profit, if you don't know the activities you should be doing, then it can be really easy to, as you said, finish the month or finish the year and work out well.
- 19:34Mel Browne: My staff had a great time, customers are really happy, but I'm broke and I'm sorry.
- 19:40Mel Browne: We're not running charities.
- 19:41Mel Browne: Most of us were not running, not for profits.
- 19:43Mel Browne: Many of us want to do good in our business certainly I do, but I also want to create wealth while I do it.
- 19:48Mel Browne: So it's really important to understand that's not selfish.
- 19:51Mel Browne: And if you're not creating well, if you're not paying yourself, I would encourage you to sit down and work it back so to work out what should you be paying yourself so there, and what are your costs and your margins.
- 20:03Mel Browne: So, therefore, what do your sales need to be in order to pay yourself that?
- 20:07Mel Browne: And if you think you can't get there, you need to make some harsh choices then about the margins.
- 20:12Mel Browne: You're charging the prices.
- 20:13Mel Browne: You're charging all your costs, because I've met a lot of people that should be ripping out some team at the moment or reducing their costs, but also looking at your pricing, looking at those things that lead into your sales wow, we, we have covered off a lot of things like just thinking in my
- 20:32Nicky: just, we went a few different places, yeah we talked about breaking cycles around unlearning mindset and beliefs and and leveraging our strengths and knowing what to let go of.
- 20:43Nicky: We talked about creating wealth and the seven streams of income.
- 20:46Nicky: We talked about focusing on profit in business.
- 20:49Nicky: We talked about media.
- 20:51Nicky: So we're like, seriously, in 20 minutes or so, we can talk about it.
- 20:56Nicky: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah to us.
- 20:59Nicky: So I did.
- 21:00Nicky: We do have a final question which we love to ask, which is around an actionable action people can take.
- 21:05Nicky: But before we get to that, now, what would you if people are listening to this, which I know they will be thinking I want more of now.
- 21:12Nicky: How do I get more of now?
- 21:14Nicky: Where will we direct?
- 21:15Mel Browne: them.
- 21:16Mel Browne: Where will you find me and come play with me and in start so I'm mel brown money.
- 21:20Mel Browne: I've got an E on the end of brown or at Melissa brown dot comau.
- 21:24Mel Browne: Again E on the end of brown.
- 21:25Mel Browne: I've got so many freebies and free raw resources and more that you can play with and lots of really excellent reels that include chocolate frogs.
- 21:35Nicky: I will say I feel like you would make me chocolate frogs yes, you are one of the OG's, I think, around like using props with chocolate and eating anyway.
- 21:45Nicky: So, curiosity, go check it out.
- 21:47Nicky: And, of course, we'll have all the notes in the show notes.
- 21:49Nicky: And so, as I said, we like to ask the final question about one action people can take in the next 24 hours and, to be honest, I don't even know.
- 21:57Nicky: We went to so many different places.
- 21:58Nicky: I'm thinking, I'm wondering, ladies, what, what area do we want to focus on?
- 22:02Nicky: Maybe profit in business, or wealth creation?
- 22:05Nicky: What's one thing that our listeners can do in the next 24 hours to start breaking a cycle or moving towards more profit?
- 22:12Nicky: Wealth creation, that's.
- 22:14Nicky: That's quite an open question now.
- 22:16Nicky: So I'm gonna no, I'm gonna give you one for business and one for personal wealth yes, love it.
- 22:21Mel Browne: So if you're a business owner, the one thing you've got to do is you have to open up your zero file and look at your numbers.
- 22:27Mel Browne: So actually start to face or zero quick and on my up or whatever you're using start to face your numbers.
- 22:33Mel Browne: If you if, when I said, conversion leads retention you don't know any of those your homework, the one thing I want you to do is go and figure out what those numbers are for you, because if you don't know what they are, you don't know what your profitability is and you don't have a place to build to start.
- 22:49Mel Browne: So, what are those numbers?
- 22:51Mel Browne: And then, if you want a second step, what do you want them to be for personal wealth creation?
- 22:56Mel Browne: I want, for most people.
- 22:57Mel Browne: I want you to think about what do you want.
- 23:00Mel Browne: You know what's important to you.
- 23:02Mel Browne: Do you want to stop working in 10 years?
- 23:05Mel Browne: Do you want to be debt free?
- 23:07Mel Browne: Do you want to put your kids to private school?
- 23:10Mel Browne: You know, whatever is that thing for you.
- 23:12Mel Browne: When you think about that goal, what's the one thing you need to do this week in order to move towards that?
- 23:18Mel Browne: And that's going to be different for everyone, but I know that most people already know that one thing they know what they should be doing, so think about the goal, get excited and then think about what's the one thing that you need to do this week in order to move closer to that goal.
- 23:34Ness: I love that so much and you know what I also love about that is we marry.
- 23:40Ness: Always when we talk about a vision business vision we talk about how does that align to your personal vision?
- 23:45Ness: This is and you could say you know a vision for you in your career.
- 23:50Ness: Also, how does that impact and help you live that, that personal vision?
