- 0:00Good morning y'all, this is friendly.
- 0:03Welcome back to another episode. So happy you're here.
- 0:06Happy Saturday. Today's passage was honestly
- 0:10such a humbling reminder for me, especially as someone who has
- 0:14been walking with the Lord for a while now.
- 0:16It really did reset my heart in the best way and I'm looking
- 0:21forward to getting into it with you guys.
- 0:24So we are going to be in Matthew chapter 20 and going through
- 0:29verses one through 16. This is titled Jesus tells the
- 0:33Parable of the Vineyard Workers, and it is a little bit longer.
- 0:37I don't want to paraphrase, I want y'all to get the full
- 0:40story. So as I read it, try to envision
- 0:43it and just focus on the words that I'm reading over you guys.
- 0:48For the Kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out
- 0:51early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
- 0:55He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into
- 0:58his vineyard. About 9:00 in the morning he
- 1:01went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing
- 1:04nothing. He told them, you also go and
- 1:08work in my vineyard and I will pay you whatever is right.
- 1:11So they went. He went out again about noon and
- 1:15about 3:00 in the afternoon and did the same thing.
- 1:18About 5:00 in the afternoon he went out and found still others
- 1:22standing around. He asked them why have you been
- 1:25standing here all day long doing nothing?
- 1:28Because no one has hired us. They answered.
- 1:30He said to them, you also go and work in my vineyard.
- 1:34When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his
- 1:37foreman, call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning
- 1:41with the last ones hired and going on to the first.
- 1:45The workers who were hired about 5:00 in the afternoon came and
- 1:49each received a denarius. So when those came who were
- 1:53hired first, they expected to receive more.
- 1:56But each one of them also received a denarius.
- 1:59When they received it, they began to grumble against the
- 2:02landowner. These who were hired last worked
- 2:05only one hour, they said. And you have made them equal to
- 2:08us who have borne the burden of the work in the heat of the day.
- 2:13But he answered one of them. I'm not being unfair to you,
- 2:17friend. Didn't you agree to work for a
- 2:19denarius? Take your pay and go.
- 2:22I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave
- 2:26you. Don't I have the right to do
- 2:28what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I'm
- 2:32generous? So the last will be first and
- 2:35the first will be last. OK, Remember that last verse,
- 2:41verse 16? So the last will be first and
- 2:43the first will be last. Because it is almost verbatim
- 2:47what Jesus said in the passage from yesterday.
- 2:50And we know that when Jesus repeats himself, that means it's
- 2:53important. So now I'm going to go into
- 2:56understanding the parable better.
- 2:58I'm going to clarify some terms and give y'all a little bit of
- 3:01context as usual. But in this story, God is the
- 3:05landowner, the workers are believers.
- 3:09And the denarius, that is a full day's wage.
- 3:12And this is representing salvation.
- 3:15Right away. Jesus gives us a very clear and
- 3:18sobering reminder access to heaven.
- 3:22Salvation is only because of God's grace.
- 3:27This means it is not because you've been a believer longer.
- 3:31It's not because you've served more.
- 3:33You've grown up in the church or in a Christian family, or you've
- 3:36been on mission trips. Maybe you've experienced quote
- 3:39UN quote more of His Holy Spirit or held a certain role or
- 3:43position. And honestly, I think this is
- 3:46such an encouragement, especially for new believers
- 3:49because as a new believer, you may be feeling intimidated
- 3:54because you don't know as much yet or your faith is newer and
- 3:57feels simpler. But I want you to hear this
- 4:00clearly that you are just as welcome.
- 4:03You're just as invited into His Kingdom and just as loved by
- 4:06your Father. Y'all, the truth is that none of
- 4:11us deserve eternal life. We were all once enslaved to our
- 4:15sin, in bondage, in chains. We were forgotten.
- 4:20It seemed like we were too far to be gone, too filthy for holy
- 4:24and pure God. But he sent Jesus anyway.
- 4:29And this reminds me of the story in Luke chapter 23, verses 40
- 4:33through 43 of the criminal on the cross beside Jesus.
- 4:38Because that day he had more faith than a lot of Jesus's
- 4:43followers. Then some of them, they went
- 4:45into hiding. They were so distraught and
- 4:48discouraged. They were convinced that their
- 4:51Messiah had been defeated by death and that that was the end.
- 4:55But that man beside Jesus, although a criminal, he saw
- 4:59beyond the present pain and agony, and he first saw into
- 5:03Jesus's future glory. His faith is what saved him and
- 5:08he simply said, Jesus Remember Me when you come into your
- 5:12Kingdom. And Jesus answers while enduring
- 5:16the unimaginable pain that we can't even fathom.
- 5:19He responds with overwhelming grace.
- 5:22Today you will be with me in paradise.
- 5:25Y'all. That is the reckless,
- 5:27breathtaking love of God that even in his suffering, the worst
- 5:33of the worst, his heart still deeply longed for people to
- 5:37believe and be with him. Just wow.
- 5:41I had to sit with that for a minute because that is so, so
- 5:45dense. And going back to the parable,
- 5:49it is not about rewards. It's not about spiritual
- 5:52ranking. It is about salvation when you
- 5:56really think about it, God's presence with us right now
- 6:00through his Spirit that He entrusts and seals us with.
- 6:03When we receive Him into our hearts in the life with Him
- 6:07forever and in eternity, that is the greatest gift that we could
- 6:11ever receive. Jesus, He is the prize.
- 6:15He's not just the one who gives the reward and saves us.
- 6:19He is what we want. So I pray over myself and for
- 6:25listeners that we desire the giver more than we desire what
- 6:30He can give us, the gifts that He can bring.
- 6:34And this passage, it also is challenging comparison.
- 6:40So that's something I want to touch on because when we compare
- 6:43our walk and faith journey with someone else's, I think a few
- 6:46things can happen. First, it can rob us of joy what
- 6:50God wants to show us personally. Second, we can forget that every
- 6:56relationship with Him, it is meant to be personal, it's
- 6:59different and therefore it's unique.
- 7:02And 3rd, it can ignore that God works on each heart in His own
- 7:07perfect timing. So that means some may encounter
- 7:10Him earlier and some may encounter him later in their
- 7:13life. I don't think that we're meant
- 7:16to get stuck on the why Isaiah reminds US, Isaiah 55, that
- 7:21God's thoughts and his ways are so much higher than ours.
- 7:25But I believe what matters most is how we respond when we become
- 7:29aware of this invitation, His offer for us.
- 7:33And whether we choose to follow the obedience is what matters.
- 7:38So then you may ask, OK, so how do we combat comparison?
- 7:43Because it is so easy to get caught up in, I think we need to
- 7:48return to God's kindness toward us.
- 7:52I want this to sink in for you guys.
- 7:54The God of heaven and earth. He knows you by name.
- 7:58He knows how many hair follicules are on your head.
- 8:02Y'all. This is something I personally
- 8:05do not even know about myself. I'm assuming y'all don't either.
- 8:08He looked at you and he said you.
- 8:12You are my Beloved, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes
- 8:17to rescue you, even if that means leaving my glorious throne
- 8:21in heaven, perfection and enduring the most painful death
- 8:26imaginable and entering into a simple world.
- 8:30So when you feel tempted to want what someone else has or maybe
- 8:34experiencing, I want y'all to lift up your eyes and set them
- 8:39back on your Savior. He does not want your
- 8:42performance, what you can do. He simply wants your attention
- 8:46and your eyes to be locked on Him.
- 8:49And scripture tells us that when we seek Him with all of our
- 8:52heart, we will find Him. It says ask and it will be
- 8:56given. Seek and you will find knock and
- 8:58the door will be open. Matthew 77 in Psalm 37, four, it
- 9:03reminds us that when we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will
- 9:08shape and fulfill every single desire because He is giving us.
- 9:14Whenever He is making us more into the image of Jesus, He is
- 9:17naturally giving us His desires and they're His best, what He
- 9:21desires for us. So I just want to give y'all a
- 9:25few questions that I am going to be reflecting on and doing a
- 9:29little heart check. But the first one is how am I
- 9:32using what God has entrusted to me?
- 9:35So my time, the people in my life, my relationships or
- 9:39friendships, my resources and my opportunities.
- 9:44Two, am I doing these things to earn God's approval or the
- 9:48approval of others, or to simply honor Him with what I've been
- 9:52given and trusted? 3 Is comparison trapping or
- 9:57maybe even immobilizing me in any area of my life?
- 10:01Is it producing bitterness or envy and possibly stealing the
- 10:06joy of walking hand in hand with my Father?
- 10:10Ultimately, guys, do we want to be trapped and enslaved to
- 10:13comparison, or do we want to live in contentment?
- 10:17So I'm going to move into prayer.
- 10:20Father God, thank you for your grace.
- 10:25Your grace that none of us could ever earn deserve, but grace
- 10:31that all of us desperately need. Thank you for seeing us in our
- 10:36brokenness and for choosing to pursue us anyways.
- 10:40God, would you align our hearts with yours?
- 10:43Draw our focus back to You when we're tempted to look sideways
- 10:49and compare ourselves with our neighbor.
- 10:52Lord, would You build a greater contentment in our hearts just
- 10:56being in Your presence and seeking You in our personal
- 10:59relationship with You? Would You form in us a deeper
- 11:03trust in Your timing and a genuine desire to honor You with
- 11:07what You've placed in our hands? God, release us from comparison.
- 11:12Lead us into lasting gratitude and joy that is only found in
- 11:17You. God, we adore you.
- 11:19We exist to magnify your name for the gift of salvation.
- 11:25May we be eager to preach this and tell others about it.
- 11:29We love you so much. Jesus.
- 11:32We ask this all in your name. Amen.
- 11:34OK, well that is today's episode and I will be praying for y'all
- 11:39as you continue through the weekend and I will see you on
- 11:43the next one.
