- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to
- 0:08kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:14you by the Great News Podcast because good news should be
- 0:18heard. Link is in the show notes.
- 0:22Today's quote comes from Theodore Suss Giesel, the man
- 0:26the world simply knows as Doctor Seuss.
- 0:31He's best known for The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham,
- 0:35but he was also capable of extraordinary wisdom that had
- 0:39nothing to do with rhyming or whimsy.
- 0:42He once wrote sometimes you will never know the value of a moment
- 0:48until it becomes a memory. That word sometimes is doing
- 0:55quiet but important work at the start of this quote.
- 0:58Not always. Sometimes, because some moments
- 1:02we recognize as precious while they're happening, like a
- 1:06wedding, a birth, a long-awaited achievement.
- 1:10We know in real time that we want to remember this.
- 1:16But Doctor Seuss is pointing at the other kind of moment, the
- 1:19ordinary moment. A regular Tuesday, the
- 1:23unremarkable dinner, the conversation that had no agenda,
- 1:28the afternoon that felt like nothing special at all.
- 1:33The specific moments we treasure most were often nothing out of
- 1:37the ordinary when they actually took place.
- 1:40We never would have guessed that one day they'd become as
- 1:43important as they have. And here's what makes that both
- 1:47beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
- 1:50You cannot always know which moments those will be while
- 1:53you're in them. The last time you laughed with
- 1:57someone you loved, before everything changed.
- 2:00The ordinary morning that turned out to be that last one of its
- 2:04kind, The version of your child at a particular age that you
- 2:10didn't realize you'd miss until it was already gone.
- 2:15This quote carries a message about the impermanence of life,
- 2:19a reminder that time is fleeting and that the moments we take for
- 2:24granted may eventually become the moments we most long to
- 2:28revisit. This isn't a call to nostalgia.
- 2:31It's a call to presence, to slow down just enough to actually
- 2:35inhabit the moment you're in. Not because you know it will be
- 2:39precious, but precisely because you can't know yet.
- 2:44The value is being created right now, you just won't see it until
- 2:48later. Looking back, some of the
- 2:51moments I'm most grateful for were the ones I nearly sleepwalk
- 2:55through conversations. I was half present for ordinary
- 3:00evenings. I was too distracted to notice
- 3:04when the kids were babies. I was exhausted, and it was only
- 3:08later that I understood what they had actually been worth.
- 3:12Doctor Seuss is asking us to close that gap, not to wait for
- 3:17the memory to reveal the value, but to bring a little of that
- 3:20future appreciation back to the present where you can actually
- 3:24do something with it. So here's the question.
- 3:28What's happening in your life right now?
- 3:32Something ordinary, unremarkable, easy to overlook
- 3:36that you might one day look back as one of the moments that
- 3:40mattered most because it's already becoming a memory.
- 3:44Every second that passes is moving from now into then.
- 3:49The question is whether you were present enough to feel its value
- 3:53while it was still here. Pay attention.
- 3:57Some of this is precious. You just don't know which parts
- 4:01yet. That's it for today.
- 4:04I'm Anna McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:09tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:15with another daily quote.
