- 0:00Speaker 1: This rocket company is the only reason we can now
- 0:03Speaker 1: send American astratch into spite from here.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Take over Eland, Yes, take over.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hi everyone.
- 0:25Speaker 3: As you can see, I'm not just maga, I'm dark.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Mega sext story could explain some things. Maybe that was
- 0:34Speaker 2: just one of the many chaotic moments and performative moments
- 0:38Speaker 2: of Elon Musk's the time alongside Donald Trump on the
- 0:41Speaker 2: campaign trail in twenty twenty four. Now, some truly shocking
- 0:45Speaker 2: new reporting by The New York Times finds it while
- 0:48Speaker 2: campaigning with Donald Trump last year, Elon Musk engaged in
- 0:52Speaker 2: drug consumption that quote went well beyond occasional use, to
- 0:56Speaker 2: the point where it began to have a physical impact
- 0:58Speaker 2: on him. Times reports this quote. As Elon Musk became
- 1:02Speaker 2: one of Donald Trump's closest allies last year, leading raucus
- 1:06Speaker 2: rallies and donating about two hundred and seventy five million
- 1:10Speaker 2: dollars to help him win the presidency, he was also
- 1:13Speaker 2: using drugs far more intensely than previously known. That's according
- 1:17Speaker 2: to people familiar with his activities. Musk's drug consumption went
- 1:21Speaker 2: well beyond occasional use. He told people he was taking
- 1:25Speaker 2: so much ketamine, a powerful and esthetic that it was
- 1:29Speaker 2: affecting his bladder, a known effect of chronic use. He
- 1:33Speaker 2: took ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms, and he traveled with a
- 1:37Speaker 2: daily medication box that held about twenty pills, including ones
- 1:41Speaker 2: with the markings of the stimulant adderall as, according to
- 1:44Speaker 2: a photo of the box and people who have seen it.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Musk has said that he was prescribed ketamine to treat depression,
- 1:51Speaker 2: taking it approximately every two weeks. He told his biographer
- 1:55Speaker 2: this quote, I really don't like doing illegal drugs. The
- 2:00Speaker 2: Times reports this quote. Musk had been using ketamine often,
- 2:04Speaker 2: sometimes daily, and mixing it with other drugs. According to
- 2:07Speaker 2: people familiar with his consumption, the line between medical use
- 2:11Speaker 2: and recreation was blurry, troubling some people close to him.
- 2:15Speaker 2: The New York Times notes that it is unclear whether
- 2:18Speaker 2: he continued to take drugs when he began working at
- 2:21Speaker 2: the White House Elon Musk's time in the administration was
- 2:25Speaker 2: defined by the massive cuts he made to the federal workforce,
- 2:29Speaker 2: which have frequently been challenged in courts and often blocked,
- 2:32Speaker 2: as well as reported interpersonal clashes with senior cabinet members,
- 2:37Speaker 2: including Traded Vizir Peter Navarro, who he called a quote
- 2:40Speaker 2: moron end quote dumber than a sack of bricks end
- 2:44Speaker 2: quote in the Oval office. Today, Elon Musk lashed out
- 2:48Speaker 2: at The New York Times without answering questions about the
- 2:51Speaker 2: substance of its reporting. NBC News has not been able
- 2:54Speaker 2: to independently verify the Times reporting. The White House and
- 2:58Speaker 2: Elon Musk did not respond to quests for comment from
- 3:01Speaker 2: NBC News. A White House spokesperson did issue a statement
- 3:05Speaker 2: to The New York Times. He declined to comment on
- 3:07Speaker 2: Musk's drug use. Joining our coverage is investigative reporter for
- 3:11Speaker 2: The New York Times, Megan Towey. Our byline is on
- 3:14Speaker 2: that reporting we read from.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Say more yeah, yeah, Well listen, there has You're right,
- 3:20Speaker 3: there has been some coverage of Elon's Musk's drug use
- 3:25Speaker 3: in the past. He himself has acknowledged that he used ketamine,
- 3:29Speaker 3: as he said it was with a prescription in only
- 3:32Speaker 3: every couple of weeks to help with depression. But what
- 3:36Speaker 3: we found is that the drug use was much more
- 3:39Speaker 3: frequently than previously known, and it wasn't just the volume.
- 3:43Speaker 3: It was that these drugs appeared to be mixed. So
- 3:47Speaker 3: from the ketamine use that at times has been near
- 3:51Speaker 3: or daily and got to the point where it's was
- 3:53Speaker 3: causing bladder issues as he was joining Trump on the
- 3:56Speaker 3: campaign trail, to the use of ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms
- 4:01Speaker 3: as well as this pill box that contained you know,
- 4:04Speaker 3: as many as twenty pills, including one with the marking
- 4:07Speaker 3: of adderall. So, there were some people close to him.
- 4:11Speaker 3: It's been really hard for reporters to penetrate the circle
- 4:15Speaker 3: of people who know him. But in recent months people
- 4:18Speaker 3: had started to talk to me and my colleague christ
- 4:20Speaker 3: and grind because there have been people close to him
- 4:24Speaker 3: who have had concerns about his drug use.
- 4:27Speaker 2: This is going to sounding a dumb question, but what
- 4:29Speaker 2: is ketamine and how do you take it? And what
- 4:31Speaker 2: would a normal either recreational or prescribe use look like.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good question.
- 4:38Speaker 3: It's this powerful anesthetic that can serve as a sedative
- 4:42Speaker 3: and it has been approved by the FDA for use
- 4:46Speaker 3: in medical procedures. There are doctors who have prescribed it
- 4:51Speaker 3: for psychiatric treatment like depression, but those doctors are supposed
- 4:57Speaker 3: to have special licenses, and the FDA has learned that
- 5:00Speaker 3: the use of this drug, you know, can come with
- 5:02Speaker 3: these serious side effects and risks, including addiction and bladder issues.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Does that mean you lose? But are the bladder issues the.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Bladder issues those There's not It's not one single bladder
- 5:15Speaker 3: issue that can come from chronic use of the drug,
- 5:18Speaker 3: which can be you know, can be consumed in a
- 5:21Speaker 3: variety of ways, including like through lozenges and nose phrays.
- 5:25Speaker 3: In addition to being used medically, it has also become
- 5:28Speaker 3: an increasingly popular recreational drug, I think, particularly in the
- 5:32Speaker 3: sort of out west, in the tech world and so
- 5:36Speaker 3: but the FDA has warned that it can have these
- 5:39Speaker 3: the side effects and the bladder issues can involve like
- 5:43Speaker 3: pain and control.
- 5:45Speaker 2: God, you don't even know what to say. I mean,
- 5:48Speaker 2: what is the sense that, obviously the reporting is about
- 5:55Speaker 2: a period in time that ended in November. He's leaving
- 5:58Speaker 2: after a lot of political analysis sort of assessing that
- 6:02Speaker 2: he costs the Republicans the seat in Wisconsin. I mean,
- 6:05Speaker 2: what is the sense of how much we still don't
- 6:09Speaker 2: know about Elon Muskin Donald Trump?
- 6:12Speaker 1: Well, I think that that's a really good question.
- 6:13Speaker 3: And obviously our story comes at this moment when he
- 6:17Speaker 3: is departing from Washington at least to some extent, and
- 6:21Speaker 3: I think that we're, you know, all of us are
- 6:23Speaker 3: going to be processing and analyzing what has happened, both
- 6:27Speaker 3: publicly but also behind the scenes over the past year.
- 6:30Speaker 3: And it's also important to note that while our reporting
- 6:32Speaker 3: on his drug use, this drug use that was much
- 6:35Speaker 3: more intense than previously known, kind of only went up
- 6:38Speaker 3: through the end of last year, and we can't say
- 6:41Speaker 3: with certainty whether he was continued to use drugs once
- 6:45Speaker 3: he entered the White House and was given the keys
- 6:48Speaker 3: to slash the federal bureaucracy. And you know, listen, we
- 6:52Speaker 3: asked the White House about whether or not they had
- 6:55Speaker 3: drug tested Musk and they refuse to answer those questions. SpaceX,
- 7:00Speaker 3: one of his companies after he smoked weed in twenty
- 7:04Speaker 3: eighteen Andre Rogan's podcast, You know that triggered.
- 7:08Speaker 1: SpaceX has billions of.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Dollars in contracts, and they are required because of that
- 7:13Speaker 3: to maintain a drug free workplace and test their employees.
- 7:17Speaker 3: And our reporting showed that Musk receives advanced warnings of
- 7:22Speaker 3: those tests. So what's certain is that there doesn't seem
- 7:25Speaker 3: to be any like there hasn't been any sort of
- 7:27Speaker 3: scrutiny or true monitoring or testing of this drug use
- 7:32Speaker 3: even as it sort of bubbled up behind the scenes.
- 7:35Speaker 3: And you know, today the White House issued a statement
- 7:39Speaker 3: saying to us saying that they, you know, just basically
- 7:43Speaker 3: saying that they gave a Musk a lot of credit
- 7:46Speaker 3: for what he's done, but still refusing to answer our
- 7:48Speaker 3: questions about whether or not they've drug tested him.
- 7:51Speaker 2: But importantly, did they deny anything in your story?
- 7:53Speaker 3: Nobody has denied anything in our story. And today at
- 7:56Speaker 3: this press conference, you know, the first question that Musk
- 8:00Speaker 3: fielded was about our story, and he shut that down.
- 8:04Speaker 3: He didn't even let the question out in its entirety.
- 8:07Speaker 3: He just, you know, he refused to engage in our reporting.
- 8:10Speaker 3: He you know, he hadn't responded to our questions that
- 8:12Speaker 3: we started to submit as early as Monday, and he
- 8:16Speaker 3: basically just instructed everybody to move on.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I know he has a lot of personal relationships. Are
- 8:21Speaker 2: all of those relationships governed by NDA's or is it
- 8:25Speaker 2: possible to report on any of his past partners?
- 8:28Speaker 3: It is extremely hard to report on him. Like many
- 8:31Speaker 3: powerful people, he has required NDAs of people in his
- 8:37Speaker 3: inner circle and who have interacted with him. But we
- 8:39Speaker 3: were able to ultimately interview more than twelve people, more
- 8:43Speaker 3: than a dozen people who have known him and have
- 8:48Speaker 3: or have worked for him, And so you know, that
- 8:51Speaker 3: felt to us like it was a significant body of people,
- 8:54Speaker 3: including people growing numbers of people who.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Have been close to him, who have been worried about them.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Yeah, sometimes it's it's not people trying to make them
- 9:03Speaker 2: look bad as people that are most worried.
- 9:04Speaker 1: What can you tell us about the.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Box of pills and the twenty pills a day? I
- 9:08Speaker 2: can barely choke down my button and.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Say, yeah, listen, I mean we're you know, we can't
- 9:13Speaker 3: go into all the details of what we've observed in
- 9:16Speaker 3: that box and say things with certainty. You know, we
- 9:20Speaker 3: were able to see a photograph of this pill box,
- 9:23Speaker 3: this daily pill box that contain about howney posts.
- 9:26Speaker 1: You say, how big it is?
- 9:27Speaker 3: Yeah, like just like it's like about this big with
- 9:29Speaker 3: divided like AM and PM and so yeah, so we
- 9:34Speaker 3: saw a photo of it, and we've talked to people
- 9:36Speaker 3: who have seen it. You know, what we can say
- 9:38Speaker 3: with certainty that it includes the stimulant adderall. So you know,
- 9:42Speaker 3: we're talking about ketamine, you know, which is a sedative,
- 9:45Speaker 3: we're talking about adderall, a stimulant, We're talking about these
- 9:48Speaker 3: other psychedelic drugs, and so you know, once again the
- 9:52Speaker 3: concern has been not just the volume of drugs and
- 9:55Speaker 3: the frequency, but the mixing of them.
- 9:57Speaker 2: It's unbelievable reporting. It's so nice to see you the
- 10:00Speaker 2: nice table. I want you to stand the beat. If
- 10:03Speaker 2: there's mortal, learn Maigan to thank you very very much.
- 10:25Speaker 2: H
