- 0:07Speaker 1: start over. Welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm your host, Colleen Witt, and we today we have
- 0:13Speaker 1: a very special guest. We have Mignon. Frandsois in the building.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Entrepreneur author. I'm sorry, I'm having fun. Entrepreneur author, cupcake
- 0:22Speaker 1: extraordinaire slash millionaire in the building. I'm really excited about
- 0:26Speaker 1: this episode. So I feel like all you aspiring entrepreneurs,
- 0:30Speaker 1: entrepreneurs toughing it out right now, pull over, get your
- 0:34Speaker 1: pen and papers ready, because we're about to take notes.
- 0:38Speaker 1: And today she's making my favorite dish that I didn't
- 0:41Speaker 1: even know you could make, which sounds really reach now
- 0:45Speaker 1: that I think about it. But I'm excited because I'm
- 0:47Speaker 1: gonna go home and pretend like, you know, I came
- 0:52Speaker 1: up with this myself. But for all your listeners, for
- 0:55Speaker 1: the dish she's about to announce. You guys can catch
- 0:57Speaker 1: this in the cookbook, but take it over. What are
- 1:00Speaker 1: you gonna have me eat today?
- 1:02Speaker 2: Onion rings.
- 1:03Speaker 3: So my family when we were when we were really struggling,
- 1:08Speaker 3: we couldn't have extra things like potato chips and crackers
- 1:12Speaker 3: and things like that. I had to learn how to
- 1:15Speaker 3: make those things. And really it's an inexpen an inexpensive
- 1:19Speaker 3: way to have something fun. And you know that hits
- 1:24Speaker 3: a craving. And so in my household, it was always
- 1:27Speaker 3: on your rings. And so I love that you said
- 1:30Speaker 3: this is one of your favorite things, because you're probably
- 1:32Speaker 3: never really looking on your rings the same like, you'll
- 1:36Speaker 3: know that you can do this really quick and easy
- 1:37Speaker 3: at home, and you probably never eat them out again.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And I have a saying on this show, the broker
- 1:42Speaker 1: the dish, the better the story. In this case, my
- 1:46Speaker 1: favorite dish just happens to be a very affordable dish.
- 2:13Speaker 1: So why don't you walk us through the ingredients of
- 2:16Speaker 1: these spectacular onion rings.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Yeah, so I've got some oil heating up on the
- 2:20Speaker 3: stove because it needs to be super hot in order
- 2:22Speaker 3: to drop the onion rings. And then I've got eggs, milk,
- 2:27Speaker 3: some flour. We're gonna season this flour. And for me,
- 2:30Speaker 3: it's a red or a white onion. They're sweeter, and
- 2:35Speaker 3: I think it gives your on your ring a little
- 2:37Speaker 3: bit of a kick, you know.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I do the shopping for the show, and I said, oh,
- 2:42Speaker 1: these red onions. She must know something about them. I
- 2:46Speaker 1: don't know the difference between all the onions, but I'm
- 2:50Speaker 1: I mean, take me to school. Let's whip this dish up.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And then you do have seasonings too.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah. So my favorite go to seasoning is Tony's.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I'm from New Orleans and so this is a season
- 3:00Speaker 3: that you find in any cooks kitchen from that city.
- 3:04Speaker 2: And then I've got salt and pepper.
- 3:06Speaker 3: And then my favorite garlic to use is California style,
- 3:10Speaker 3: and so it's got a little bit of parsley and
- 3:13Speaker 3: a little garlic.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Garlic powder, Yeah, got it, garlic powder and onion powder.
- 3:19Speaker 1: And almost every dish not mate. And when I run low,
- 3:22Speaker 1: I'm like, oh no, I don't know what to do,
- 3:25Speaker 1: but go ahead, start us off, tell us, tell us
- 3:27Speaker 1: what well you're gonna do cooking and I'm gonna be watching.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Okay, So I've already cut up the onions, and you
- 3:32Speaker 3: can cut them however you like. I like my onions
- 3:35Speaker 3: to be a little bit thick, because when you bite
- 3:37Speaker 3: into the onion, you want it to be substantial. And
- 3:41Speaker 3: then one of the keys is we've got to I'm
- 3:44Speaker 3: just gonna move my water all the way.
- 3:46Speaker 2: We've got to season the flour.
- 3:48Speaker 3: If you don't season the flour, then it's not gonna
- 3:51Speaker 3: really taste like anything.
- 3:52Speaker 1: By the way, and I didn't measure that flower.
- 3:54Speaker 3: And guess what, it's okay because all we're doing is
- 3:57Speaker 3: using this to coat the onion rings.
- 3:59Speaker 2: It doesn't even matter how much you really have.
- 4:03Speaker 3: So I'm just gonna take a fork and with this
- 4:06Speaker 3: up just to get the ingredients incorporated. And I'm gonna
- 4:11Speaker 3: put some Tony's in there, just because I wanted.
- 4:14Speaker 2: To have a little bit of a kick to it.
- 4:17Speaker 2: And it's also got it's also.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Got a little salt in it too, but we're gonna
- 4:23Speaker 3: use the salt and pepper when we're done. And so
- 4:26Speaker 3: once it's sort of got a color to it, then
- 4:28Speaker 3: you know that you seasoned this enough.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And you don't want it to be too spicy because
- 4:35Speaker 2: we're also gonna season the onions too. So I'm just
- 4:38Speaker 2: gonna crack an egg.
- 4:44Speaker 1: When I got the original recipe, my immediate like, doesn't
- 4:48Speaker 1: she need breadcrumbs or something? And then I was like,
- 4:50Speaker 1: oh wait, there's flour. Let me be quiet. That's how
- 4:53Speaker 1: much I didn't know about this. So okay, I'm taking notes.
- 4:55Speaker 1: You season the flour so it has a little bit.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Of a thing, yea.
- 4:59Speaker 3: And so I'm going to crack the eggs. Crack these
- 5:03Speaker 3: eggs into the bowl, and I'm just gonna break them.
- 5:11Speaker 2: They're like, oh they broke. Okay, I got a cough
- 5:14Speaker 2: because I'm so good COVID's over. Yeah, well is it.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I've had COVID so many times I'm practically immune.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:22Speaker 3: I think this is the season has gotten into my system.
- 5:26Speaker 3: And so one of the things that I'm also gonna
- 5:29Speaker 3: do is I'm gonna season the.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Egg wash too.
- 5:31Speaker 3: This is an egg wash that I'm making, and so
- 5:34Speaker 3: if we season every single part of this, these onion
- 5:36Speaker 3: rings are going to be very waveful.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I'm so exciting.
- 5:41Speaker 3: I'm Everything you learn when you are cooking while you're
- 5:45Speaker 3: broke is stretching your ingredients, and so just adding a
- 5:49Speaker 3: little bit of milk is going to smooth these egg
- 5:52Speaker 3: yolks out, but it's also going to make them go
- 5:55Speaker 3: further because I don't want to use more than two
- 5:58Speaker 3: eggs to to coat all of that, and this would
- 6:03Speaker 3: be enough to do too, but I just prept one
- 6:08Speaker 3: for the purposes.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Of our conversation.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Yes, and then what is the extra water for. I'm all,
- 6:17Speaker 1: I'm so curious. I'm sorry, I'm taking it's really.
- 6:20Speaker 2: For nothing except.
- 6:21Speaker 3: That it's my way of testing oil to see. Now,
- 6:25Speaker 3: some people might take up into flower and stick it
- 6:28Speaker 3: in there and if it's sizzles, you know, then it's ready.
- 6:31Speaker 3: We can do it like that, just so you guys,
- 6:33Speaker 3: that's not the way I would do it. And I
- 6:35Speaker 3: saw it, so.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Before we started taking she took her you know, she
- 6:38Speaker 1: tested the water and the oil and I literally was like,
- 6:41Speaker 1: oh my gosh.
- 6:42Speaker 2: You thought I was gonna burn the place.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I said. I said, oh my gosh, you're not afraid.
- 6:47Speaker 2: You hear it popping.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I'm like, you're not afraid you're gonna get burned. And
- 6:49Speaker 1: she was like no, I'm like, okay, gangstap because I
- 6:53Speaker 1: want to drop some flour and it was popping. She
- 6:56Speaker 1: was she was cool on the other side of it. Okay,
- 6:58Speaker 1: you're seasoning the onion too.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yeah, we're gonna we're gonna.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Get but it's sticking to the onion ring.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Well, I'm gonna make sure that you know. I'm gonna
- 7:07Speaker 2: make sure it.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Gets this is gonna be tasty.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I'm an I'm a Louisiana girl, I'm from New Orleans listening.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And then another thing you guys don't know is, for
- 7:16Speaker 1: like most of the last two days, I was wondering
- 7:20Speaker 1: how to cut the onion correctly, so I actually got
- 7:24Speaker 1: two onions because I really didn't know, because I knew
- 7:28Speaker 1: once you mess up the cut, then you that's it, right.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I mean, I feel like I'm just gonna go ahead
- 7:34Speaker 3: and get my hands dirty. Y'all are okay with this?
- 7:37Speaker 3: I washed my hands before this. We listen, you can
- 7:40Speaker 3: go in just like this. Okay, if this is where
- 7:43Speaker 3: you wanted your onion ring to be, you can go
- 7:44Speaker 3: and just like this, and I'm gonna show you what
- 7:46Speaker 3: that's gonna look like. So I'm gonna just let that
- 7:48Speaker 3: go it when it floats, it's ready. So you want
- 7:52Speaker 3: to come over here and check this out. I'm gonna
- 7:54Speaker 3: get off camera, but okay, when when it floats, When
- 7:56Speaker 3: it floats, that's ready.
- 7:58Speaker 2: If you want to go just like that, you can.
- 8:02Speaker 3: But I'm going to double batter these, so I'm going
- 8:05Speaker 3: to put them in flower and then I'm going to
- 8:08Speaker 3: put them back in this egg watch that I made, Okay,
- 8:12Speaker 3: and then as soon as that's brown, I'm gonna pull
- 8:17Speaker 3: that out because I'm like, in my family, we like
- 8:21Speaker 3: our onion rings to be kind of crispian.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I belong in the family.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Well, welcome to my family.
- 8:30Speaker 1: So, speaking of family, take us back to what was
- 8:33Speaker 1: going on during the time of onion ring and stretching
- 8:37Speaker 1: eggs with milk.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Yeah, we were losing everything that we had. We were
- 8:42Speaker 3: drowning in debt and brokenness. I was listening to a
- 8:45Speaker 3: man on the radio who was telling you you could
- 8:47Speaker 3: get out of debt by having a baked sale. I'm
- 8:52Speaker 3: making a mess, but make a mess, girl, messy or
- 8:56Speaker 3: the kitchen maybe the better, maybe the better. It's a yeah,
- 9:01Speaker 3: I was listening to a man on the radio was
- 9:03Speaker 3: telling people they could get out of debt by having a.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Baked sale or a garage cell.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Problem is, I didn't know how to bake that, even
- 9:12Speaker 3: out of a box. And we sold everything that we
- 9:15Speaker 3: had to get to Nashville, so I couldn't have a
- 9:18Speaker 3: garage cell either.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And this is your family you grew up in? Or
- 9:21Speaker 1: is this the family that.
- 9:23Speaker 2: This is?
- 9:24Speaker 1: This is your wow?
- 9:26Speaker 3: And so we were living in a house without electricity
- 9:30Speaker 3: on a regular basis because we couldn't afford it.
- 9:33Speaker 1: And what city where you living in?
- 9:34Speaker 3: We were living in Nashville tonight. So we moved to Nashville.
- 9:38Speaker 3: We moved to Nashville to give our children a start
- 9:42Speaker 3: on a better life. And so when we got there,
- 9:46Speaker 3: what we what we were coming for, fell through.
- 9:49Speaker 2: So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 9:51Speaker 2: do a couple of these and then transform back into
- 9:54Speaker 2: this bowl so that we can kind of keep the
- 9:57Speaker 2: oil clean, because that oil, that oil is gonna start
- 10:02Speaker 2: burning if we, you know, get too much flour wasted
- 10:05Speaker 2: in there. Is that bad?
- 10:07Speaker 3: I mean, you don't want your oil to burn before
- 10:10Speaker 3: you're done, in the sense of you don't want you
- 10:12Speaker 3: don't want your product to taste burned.
- 10:16Speaker 1: So what were you originally in Nashville for?
- 10:20Speaker 3: We had gone to Nashville for a better life. My
- 10:22Speaker 3: ex husband was a contractor. He got an offer to work.
- 10:27Speaker 2: At this other company.
- 10:28Speaker 3: And this is gonna be the first time my children
- 10:30Speaker 3: were going to be able to have rooms of their own.
- 10:34Speaker 3: And electricity that came on just because we willed it to,
- 10:39Speaker 3: because we flipped the switch and decided that we wanted
- 10:43Speaker 3: the lights to come on. We had been used to
- 10:46Speaker 3: this kind of way of living and we were trying
- 10:52Speaker 3: to do better. We wanted something different, and so we
- 10:57Speaker 3: we had decided that we were gonna move to Nashville
- 11:00Speaker 3: to take this opportunity.
- 11:02Speaker 2: As soon as we got there.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Last one hired, first one fired, and so we had
- 11:09Speaker 3: sold all of our tools to get there.
- 11:10Speaker 2: So now we don't really even.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Have a way to take care of, you know, ourselves,
- 11:18Speaker 3: And so they offered him a job to become a
- 11:22Speaker 3: cabinet installer. But he's like, but I sold all my
- 11:25Speaker 3: tools because I thought I was going to be, you know,
- 11:30Speaker 3: the vice president of this district. And so now we've
- 11:33Speaker 3: got to figure out how to make ends meet. He
- 11:36Speaker 3: doesn't really want to stay at this company at that point,
- 11:40Speaker 3: and so we have to start over from scratch. And
- 11:46Speaker 3: it was two thousand and eight. It's a recession.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Now. Was that this is personal? But was that really
- 11:56Speaker 1: hard on your marriage, like to like go through that,
- 11:59Speaker 1: like especially with kids.
- 12:00Speaker 2: That's a great question. It was definitely hard on our marriage.
- 12:03Speaker 3: But the thing is is that our marriage was already
- 12:06Speaker 3: experiencing these kinds of things. Go ahead and open up
- 12:08Speaker 3: one of those napkins for me, because we're gonna sit
- 12:10Speaker 3: these on there, okay, you know. And then yeah, I
- 12:15Speaker 3: was gonna say, I'm gonna let you tell me if
- 12:16Speaker 3: I've seizoned these, go ahead and put that on your plate.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna I want the oil.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I have no idea how good I can.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Legit. That's but that's what Gore made on your rings.
- 12:31Speaker 1: You guys, look at these, Oh my gosh, and oh yeah,
- 12:37Speaker 1: I could tell I'm never going back to regular. Oh
- 12:40Speaker 1: they're crispy.
- 12:41Speaker 3: You never, You're never gonna like go to a fast
- 12:44Speaker 3: food place and ask.
- 12:44Speaker 2: For on your rings anymore. It's too simple to do
- 12:47Speaker 2: at home.
- 12:47Speaker 1: And then I saw you flip these, so did you
- 12:50Speaker 1: see them flow? And then you flip the uh huh okay, yeah,
- 12:52Speaker 1: because you know, I have to pay attention to steal
- 12:54Speaker 1: your recipe right.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Up. You can't steal what's being gifted to.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, So so go on back to your Yeah,
- 13:04Speaker 1: it was.
- 13:05Speaker 3: It was definitely hard on our marriage, but our marriage
- 13:07Speaker 3: was already experiencing trials anyway. So I want you to
- 13:12Speaker 3: also try this one. This one's cool, so you can
- 13:15Speaker 3: try this one and see the difference and how you
- 13:18Speaker 3: you know what, you know, how you prefer it to
- 13:20Speaker 3: be because that's just flower. But this is going to
- 13:25Speaker 3: be a little bit of a thicker batter, so you're
- 13:27Speaker 3: gonna get more of like an onion ring taste out
- 13:29Speaker 3: of that one.
- 13:30Speaker 1: You don't even.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Yeah, like the flavor should be there.
- 13:34Speaker 1: I really it's gonna sound really lame, but I think
- 13:37Speaker 1: I love you, and I think I love you right back.
- 13:42Speaker 1: So the pat of my heart ain't the whole thing.
- 13:48Speaker 3: And this this gets, like I said, this gets really messy.
- 13:51Speaker 3: And this was something that I used to do with
- 13:53Speaker 3: my children all the time. They could get in the
- 13:56Speaker 3: kitchen with me and make this together. My son, who
- 14:00Speaker 3: was a sergeant in the army is going to be super.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Is that the one that texted earlier Xavior, I'm telling
- 14:09Speaker 1: you right now.
- 14:10Speaker 2: He was like, he didn't learn it.
- 14:15Speaker 3: It's something about the things that your mom makes for you.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Though I mean he's an amazing cook, he's the main
- 14:22Speaker 3: cook in his own household.
- 14:25Speaker 2: But it's just something about what your mom makes for you,
- 14:27Speaker 2: you know what I mean, Like.
- 14:29Speaker 3: You can make it yourself, but if this is something
- 14:32Speaker 3: you grow up with your mom. You really don't want
- 14:33Speaker 3: to do it, you want your mom to do it?
- 14:35Speaker 3: Do I have enough season on there for you? Do
- 14:38Speaker 3: you want me to salt and pepper them?
- 14:40Speaker 1: Because I can over here? Okay, I actually thought that
- 14:47Speaker 1: I would like the double batter more mm hmm. But
- 14:49Speaker 1: I actually think I like the thinner back with just
- 14:53Speaker 1: the just one time past. And that's that's rare for
- 14:56Speaker 1: me because I but I think it's like just the
- 15:00Speaker 1: perfect amount where you get to taste the sweetness of
- 15:02Speaker 1: the onion.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Yep.
- 15:03Speaker 3: And that's definitely that's definitely why I chose to use
- 15:06Speaker 3: red ones because they're sweeter.
- 15:10Speaker 1: These onions are so perfect, and.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I think it's just a good balance for you know,
- 15:14Speaker 3: all of the flower that's in there. But yeah, our
- 15:18Speaker 3: marriage was already going through trials of its own. We
- 15:21Speaker 3: moved to Nashville because we needed to start over. And
- 15:26Speaker 3: I was like, if any if foolish just happened in Nashville,
- 15:29Speaker 3: forget about it, don't ever speak to me again, you know,
- 15:33Speaker 3: and all that stuff. And when we got to Nashville,
- 15:35Speaker 3: it was worse in Nashville than it was in any
- 15:38Speaker 3: other city where we had lived.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Okay, And so you know. So, yes, it was hard
- 15:47Speaker 2: to be financial struggles.
- 15:48Speaker 3: You know, it's one of the main reasons that families
- 15:51Speaker 3: break up anyway. Yeah, but I mean I felt like
- 15:54Speaker 3: I was always ride or die, you know, for my husband,
- 15:57Speaker 3: Like wherever he would have taken me, I was probably
- 16:01Speaker 3: willing to go. But after twenty one years of marriage,
- 16:04Speaker 3: he asked me for a divorce.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Twenty one years? Was it before you a millionaires?
- 16:12Speaker 2: Yes?
- 16:12Speaker 1: Okay, than good?
- 16:13Speaker 3: This sorry, making this recipe and cupcakes is what saved me,
- 16:18Speaker 3: because for me, it was I had always been I
- 16:22Speaker 3: had always stayed at home with our family.
- 16:24Speaker 2: And I would tell you a follow mom, and you know,
- 16:29Speaker 2: my job was to take care of us.
- 16:32Speaker 3: So it was my neighbor who knocked on the door
- 16:37Speaker 3: and asked me to make cupcakes for all of her
- 16:40Speaker 3: her What might her.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Come to you that?
- 16:43Speaker 3: I was just gonna say. And I didn't know how
- 16:45Speaker 3: to bake. When I started this, not even out of
- 16:47Speaker 3: a box. I had started practicing. I was sitting in
- 16:50Speaker 3: the back of my house with no electricity. We were running.
- 16:54Speaker 3: We were running our house on Go ahead and open
- 16:58Speaker 3: that for me.
- 16:59Speaker 2: I want you to see.
- 17:00Speaker 3: And we were running our house on a generator because
- 17:03Speaker 3: we couldn't afford the electric the.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Electric bill with this. Yeah, yeah, this is you're just
- 17:08Speaker 2: gonna do it to the way you want it to be,
- 17:09Speaker 2: just a little sprinkle of it.
- 17:13Speaker 1: It already tastes amazing though.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Okay, well, if you don't feel like you need it, sorry,
- 17:17Speaker 2: it is.
- 17:18Speaker 1: It just tastes it, like literally tastes amazing. And I
- 17:21Speaker 1: wouldn't even I don't even want to.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Like, you know, if you season your flowers, then you
- 17:27Speaker 3: don't need to you don't need to salt.
- 17:31Speaker 1: So so your neighbor comes to you, you were just
- 17:35Speaker 1: now getting into coupcakes, okay, okay, so she kind of knew.
- 17:38Speaker 1: She was like, okay, you can't bring with the cupcakes.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:40Speaker 3: So what happened was I was listening to a man
- 17:42Speaker 3: on the radio, Dave Ramsey, was telling people they could
- 17:45Speaker 3: get out of debt by having a baked sale or
- 17:47Speaker 3: garage sale.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Well, I can't have a garage sale because I've sold
- 17:50Speaker 2: all I have to even literally sold everything. I mean,
- 17:54Speaker 2: you're broke, broke, Yeah, you get to Nashville in the
- 17:56Speaker 2: first place. And then my my husband, as we liked
- 18:00Speaker 2: the Colin was a contractor during the recession, so you
- 18:07Speaker 2: need jobs.
- 18:10Speaker 3: And I was asking God for something that I could
- 18:13Speaker 3: do to help him make the ends meet. And the
- 18:17Speaker 3: man on the radio was talking about baking, and so
- 18:21Speaker 3: I had this idea.
- 18:22Speaker 2: My daughters were gray bakers. They would bake every day
- 18:25Speaker 2: after school.
- 18:26Speaker 3: I thought, after school, you'll make whatever we're gonna sell
- 18:30Speaker 3: during the day while you're at school.
- 18:32Speaker 2: After I got really into it, my oldest daughter let
- 18:35Speaker 2: me know, I'm really not interested in your little bakery idea. Mom.
- 18:40Speaker 2: I'm going back to New Orleans where we're from.
- 18:42Speaker 1: How old were your daughters.
- 18:43Speaker 2: They were ten and sixteen at the time.
- 18:45Speaker 1: And they were already like getting into the bak.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Oh yeah, they both were probably going to culinary school.
- 18:51Speaker 3: All of my children were very good in the kitchen.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Maybe only one of them.
- 18:56Speaker 3: At the time had never gotten his hands dirty in
- 18:59Speaker 3: the kids and now he also, all of my sons
- 19:03Speaker 3: are the main cooks in their households.
- 19:05Speaker 1: And they're single.
- 19:08Speaker 2: That's probably why they're all married.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Okay, okay, yeah that makes sense because the second my
- 19:13Speaker 1: husband cooked for me and the things I said, well,
- 19:16Speaker 1: you know, I guess we're gonna have to Yeah. Men
- 19:18Speaker 1: need to know that.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:20Speaker 1: So so you take over your daughter's yeah, passion kind
- 19:24Speaker 1: of right.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Yeah, So I give them this little idea that we're
- 19:28Speaker 3: going to do this because I.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Needed field trip money.
- 19:31Speaker 3: I was always the room mom so that I could
- 19:35Speaker 3: not have to pay for the lunch or the meal
- 19:37Speaker 3: that maybe my kid wasn't even gonna eat when they.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Got to the field trip.
- 19:41Speaker 3: I was always the room mom so I could get
- 19:43Speaker 3: by and have extra time to get whatever I needed,
- 19:47Speaker 3: or to get a pass on whenever I needed. Maybe
- 19:49Speaker 3: my children could get the extras because I was already
- 19:52Speaker 3: given my time, or I knew what they really said
- 19:55Speaker 3: the room mom in their classroom, like the volunteer mind at.
- 19:59Speaker 2: School, so that I could legit mom, yeah, like yeah,
- 20:05Speaker 2: yeah yeah. And so.
- 20:08Speaker 3: I was just practicing this thing on the inside of
- 20:13Speaker 3: my house, and I had taken some to my neighbor
- 20:16Speaker 3: across the street. A Jonie didn't have any children. My
- 20:20Speaker 3: children were her children. My children were pretty much the
- 20:24Speaker 3: only children in the whole entire neighborhood. So the neighborhood,
- 20:27Speaker 3: my oldest daughter was the neighborhood babysitter. As people began
- 20:31Speaker 3: to have babies and things like that, so the neighborhood
- 20:34Speaker 3: loved my kids, and so Jonie just wanted to help.
- 20:41Speaker 3: And she had seen that I was doing something that
- 20:47Speaker 3: could make it everybody's fall in love with this one
- 20:50Speaker 3: cupcake I was making time was a lemon a lemon
- 20:53Speaker 3: drop cupcake that I was making that sounds so good.
- 20:56Speaker 3: And because they were so popular that I couldn't keep
- 21:00Speaker 3: up with them anymore. And so because I couldn't keep
- 21:03Speaker 3: up with him anymore, I stopped. I stopped using, I
- 21:06Speaker 3: stopped creating it because it was the man form was
- 21:09Speaker 3: way too big for me. I couldn't handle it.
- 21:12Speaker 1: And then how did rumors get out that you were
- 21:14Speaker 1: selling these.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Cooking Because I would go out and I would I
- 21:17Speaker 3: would first of all, because I knew who to give
- 21:19Speaker 3: them to, okay, and Joni would tell others, Oh.
- 21:23Speaker 1: So you and you would give it to the gossip girl.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:26Speaker 3: She was like the mayor of our town, like our
- 21:29Speaker 3: little Germantown area, And I would see people coming into
- 21:33Speaker 3: the neighborhood. I'd be standing out at these two giant
- 21:37Speaker 3: eight foot windows in front of my house. I would
- 21:39Speaker 3: stand out there and wait for real estate agents because
- 21:42Speaker 3: they would tear down one house and put up sixteen
- 21:45Speaker 3: in this place right, and so I would go outside
- 21:47Speaker 3: and I would tell the real estate agents that would
- 21:49Speaker 3: see coming by. Hey, my name is Minon Francois. I
- 21:52Speaker 3: live in the house, purple house right there. See the
- 21:54Speaker 3: little sign bakery coming soon. I'm creating my recipes as
- 21:58Speaker 3: I go.
- 21:58Speaker 2: And I just want to see if you like kid,
- 22:00Speaker 2: because my family says it's good. They probably just saying
- 22:02Speaker 2: that because they loved me, and so I wanted to
- 22:04Speaker 2: get your opinion.
- 22:05Speaker 1: And you would give them, like a free cupcake.
- 22:06Speaker 3: I would just I would give them cupcakes right there
- 22:09Speaker 3: on the spot. They would taste them and offer me money.
- 22:13Speaker 1: And you didn't bring any cupcakes. Okay, that story right.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I heard there were cupcakes coming. I got a little
- 22:21Speaker 1: cupcake tray. Okay, she shows up here. I picked game.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I'm like, the cupcakes must be in a book bag somewhere.
- 22:27Speaker 1: This is the truth. Okay, this is what about thinking
- 22:29Speaker 1: I saw m gonna easily slide into the cupcake and dischule,
- 22:32Speaker 1: is this a good cupcake thing?
- 22:34Speaker 2: And you said.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Sorry, I didn't bring any.
- 22:37Speaker 2: I sold out.
- 22:38Speaker 3: I had so I had gone into the bakery to
- 22:41Speaker 3: get something for you, and everything they had was sold out.
- 22:45Speaker 3: We also ship our cupcakes nationwide, and even the shipping
- 22:50Speaker 3: freezer work empty.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Now doesn't it make all of you wonder what is
- 22:57Speaker 1: in these cup so?
- 22:58Speaker 3: Okay, lots of love and we don't count calories either.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Oh that's the.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Type Okay we need to eat.
- 23:04Speaker 3: We believe that, we believe that if love conquers all,
- 23:08Speaker 3: that's got to include calories.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Okay, we got to get our hands on these.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Yes, so I'll send you something.
- 23:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna be that annoying person.
- 23:16Speaker 2: They'll be, they'll be here before you know it. As
- 23:18Speaker 2: a matter of fact.
- 23:19Speaker 1: I'll do a Instagram review.
- 23:23Speaker 2: But is it?
- 23:25Speaker 3: Yes, and I'll send you sweet potato cupcakes. Sweet potato
- 23:29Speaker 3: cupcakes have become my claim to fame over time, just
- 23:32Speaker 3: because no one's ever had that. Now the lemon one
- 23:52Speaker 3: I'm talking about that Jonie knocked on my door for
- 23:54Speaker 3: I don't make them anymore, like you can't even you
- 23:57Speaker 3: can't even get that I would have, You'd be you'd
- 24:01Speaker 3: be a fanatic and I would have to put you
- 24:03Speaker 3: in rehab.
- 24:04Speaker 1: You make me a fanatic. I'm okay with that. I
- 24:07Speaker 1: don't have addictive personality. I may just hints everyone in
- 24:11Speaker 1: a while and you'll be You'll be going to the
- 24:12Speaker 1: bathroom at six in the morning.
- 24:14Speaker 2: You'll get a text like, hmmm, do you want me
- 24:16Speaker 2: to do them without?
- 24:17Speaker 3: You want me to do them the other way? You
- 24:19Speaker 3: like them better with less? Yes?
- 24:21Speaker 1: Less, I have a little less.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I thought you were saying you were gonna make it.
- 24:27Speaker 1: We're gonna say, uh yeah, if you want, I could
- 24:30Speaker 1: make you a special lemon manage. But no, no, no,
- 24:36Speaker 1: the onion rings.
- 24:36Speaker 2: So my neighborhood began to work.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Got out in the neighborhood that Mignon had turned the
- 24:42Speaker 3: crack house that I had purchased into a lemon.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Crack and and you were your original plan was to
- 24:49Speaker 1: do this bakery out of your house. No oh, because
- 24:52Speaker 1: you said there was a sign.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that wasn't the original plan though. The
- 24:55Speaker 3: original plan was I wanted to make enough money sell
- 25:00Speaker 3: and cupcakes to go get a commercial spot somewhere else.
- 25:03Speaker 3: And we we didn't have any credit, We didn't have
- 25:05Speaker 3: any money.
- 25:06Speaker 1: It was your husband saying all the time.
- 25:09Speaker 3: He didn't he believed that I was kind of displaying around, you.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Know, even though he saw the money and the knocks
- 25:16Speaker 1: at the doors.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Well, I mean I always was the person that started
- 25:20Speaker 3: a business and then I would quit. And I think
- 25:23Speaker 3: that's what happens to a lot of people who give up.
- 25:26Speaker 2: On things too fast.
- 25:27Speaker 3: I always had these really great ideas for businesses, and
- 25:31Speaker 3: I would never.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Stick to them.
- 25:32Speaker 1: What made you stick to this.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Desperation?
- 25:37Speaker 1: We were despition slash success. Yeah, well, there's a point
- 25:40Speaker 1: where you get successful, right, Yeah, but we were hungry
- 25:43Speaker 1: at the time. I would have quit this a long
- 25:45Speaker 1: time ago.
- 25:46Speaker 3: But I was waking up every morning at three seventeen
- 25:49Speaker 3: like clockwork, in order to check on the kids, make
- 25:54Speaker 3: sure that the doors were locked, make sure.
- 25:56Speaker 2: That the stove was off. Have you ever done that? No? Well,
- 26:00Speaker 2: I would wake up every in the middle of night.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Every night.
- 26:02Speaker 3: It was almost as if an alarm clock was going off.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Sometimes I would literally hear an alarm clock that was
- 26:08Speaker 3: not set, and you would check everything, and I would
- 26:10Speaker 3: check everything. And one day I couldn't go back to sleep,
- 26:13Speaker 3: and so I got up and I went and sat
- 26:15Speaker 3: down and started watching TV. One of my favorite pastimes
- 26:18Speaker 3: is to well, my a former favorite pastime, because I
- 26:22Speaker 3: don't even watch TV anymore. Because I realized that I
- 26:25Speaker 3: was watching TV watching other people live their lives while
- 26:29Speaker 3: I wasn't living.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Oh that sounds like Instagram now.
- 26:32Speaker 3: And I didn't want to be watching other people's reality
- 26:37Speaker 3: when I wanted something to happen for myself. But at
- 26:39Speaker 3: the time, watching TV was a big pastime for me.
- 26:42Speaker 3: And so I get up and I go and I
- 26:44Speaker 3: start watching TV. And there was a man on the
- 26:48Speaker 3: TV who was saying, do.
- 26:50Speaker 2: You ever wake up in the middle of the night
- 26:51Speaker 2: and you think this is what you're doing it for?
- 26:53Speaker 2: And I was like, yeah, you're reading my mind.
- 26:58Speaker 1: This sounds like the radio. You you ever thought advertising
- 27:03Speaker 1: didn't work? It works, okay? And so what did what
- 27:07Speaker 1: did the ad say?
- 27:08Speaker 2: Well, it was it was.
- 27:10Speaker 3: It wasn't an ad, It was an actual PBS program
- 27:13Speaker 3: And to me, best time to watch TV is PBS
- 27:17Speaker 3: during fundraising. And the man on the on, the man
- 27:21Speaker 3: on the show that I turned on, said, the Morning
- 27:24Speaker 3: Breeze has something to tell you, do not go back
- 27:27Speaker 3: to sleep. And that sounded crazy to me, like the
- 27:31Speaker 3: morning Breeze, Like what's the Morning Breeze got to do
- 27:34Speaker 3: with me? And I'm not listening to this. Turn this
- 27:35Speaker 3: man off my TV, right, And so he says it
- 27:38Speaker 3: again and by the third time, he says it.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Now I'm looking for the remote to get him off
- 27:43Speaker 2: my TV.
- 27:45Speaker 3: And he said, this is the only time that you
- 27:48Speaker 3: will listen and God is trying to tell you something.
- 27:51Speaker 3: And so I was like okay, and I decided to
- 27:55Speaker 3: sit down and pay attention. And while I was listening,
- 27:59Speaker 3: he said, and you think you're getting up to check
- 28:01Speaker 3: your stove and check your children, like all the things
- 28:05Speaker 3: that I'm literally getting.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Up to do. He said, God is actually.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Trying to get your attention right now. And now that
- 28:12Speaker 3: you know that this is what he's trying to do,
- 28:14Speaker 3: it's gonna be hard for you to actually get up
- 28:16Speaker 3: and come to meet with him.
- 28:19Speaker 2: And so he gave instructions.
- 28:20Speaker 3: He said, gonna take you about a week, or put
- 28:23Speaker 3: your feet on the floor and just show up to
- 28:26Speaker 3: a silent place where God is calling you to, you know,
- 28:31Speaker 3: spend time with him. And so he was right. Took
- 28:34Speaker 3: me about a week put my feet on the floor.
- 28:36Speaker 3: And I remember the first day that I went there
- 28:39Speaker 3: to show up to hear from God, and I was like, okay, God,
- 28:41Speaker 3: I'm here. I know you want to talk to me,
- 28:44Speaker 3: but please don't talk because if you do, I'm running
- 28:47Speaker 3: straight out the other door because I don't want to
- 28:50Speaker 3: hear your voice. And I noticed there was a there
- 28:55Speaker 3: was a there was a bye on the bottom of
- 29:03Speaker 3: the coffee table. And so I grew up in a
- 29:06Speaker 3: very religious household. I knew how to hear God speak,
- 29:11Speaker 3: not really, but I knew that God spoke, you know,
- 29:13Speaker 3: to people, and so I just picked up I picked
- 29:17Speaker 3: up the Bible that was underneath the coffee table, and.
- 29:23Speaker 2: I opened it up, and the first place that it
- 29:26Speaker 2: fell was a verse that said, I'm about to show
- 29:30Speaker 2: you that I love you more than anybody else. And
- 29:35Speaker 2: I took that to mean that God loves me more
- 29:37Speaker 2: than he loves anybody else. That's not what he was saying.
- 29:40Speaker 2: What he was saying is I love you more than
- 29:42Speaker 2: anybody else loves you, and I'm going to show you
- 29:45Speaker 2: that in what I'm about to teach you. And so
- 29:48Speaker 2: he began to wake me up every day at three seventeen.
- 29:50Speaker 2: I would bring the sun up every day and take
- 29:54Speaker 2: my kids to school, whatever we needed to do.
- 29:57Speaker 3: I would wake up and do those things after having
- 30:01Speaker 3: been with God for three hours. And I would write
- 30:05Speaker 3: down everything that he would say, everything that he would
- 30:09Speaker 3: say through reading Bible verses, and I began to get
- 30:14Speaker 3: instructions for what this business, the cupcake collection, was gonna be.
- 30:18Speaker 3: I didn't know that at the time, because it was,
- 30:25Speaker 3: you know, I was just writing down what I thought.
- 30:28Speaker 2: I was writing my thoughts down. That's what I thought
- 30:30Speaker 2: that I was doing.
- 30:31Speaker 3: But when I got finished being awakened, it was all
- 30:36Speaker 3: the plans to open up this bakery business. And I
- 30:40Speaker 3: had been collecting recipes along the way.
- 30:43Speaker 2: I didn't even realize that I.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Had been writing stuff down and taking notes on things.
- 30:51Speaker 3: And so when God stopped waking me up, I had
- 30:55Speaker 3: filled up an entire spiral bound journal book, and it
- 30:59Speaker 3: was all the instructions to open up a bakery business.
- 31:03Speaker 3: And I didn't know why. You know, I didn't know
- 31:07Speaker 3: nothing about you know, cooking. Really, I had caught my
- 31:11Speaker 3: grandmother on the phone. I had been a college student
- 31:16Speaker 3: seventeen years earlier. I went to Zava University on scholarship
- 31:21Speaker 3: to become a doctor. And yeah, okay, and so I
- 31:26Speaker 3: couldn't apply the science to the human body.
- 31:29Speaker 2: So I was plunking out of my plunking out of
- 31:35Speaker 2: my science classes.
- 31:37Speaker 3: So your flower might get like how mine is right
- 31:40Speaker 3: now where it's kind of like chunky oop.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Sorry, see how that is. It's kind of becoming messy.
- 31:48Speaker 2: That's your queue where you need to refresh it with
- 31:51Speaker 2: you know, some more dry flower. But we're gonna just
- 31:55Speaker 2: make this work because I'm almost done with that whole
- 31:57Speaker 2: entire onion.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Yeah, well you could after that could sit down with me.
- 32:02Speaker 1: So okay, So you do the spiral notebook and then
- 32:06Speaker 1: you realize this is God's instruction.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Then that's so I start practicing it.
- 32:13Speaker 3: I start practicing it and letting people taste what I
- 32:17Speaker 3: was making. And that's when my neighbor comes and asked
- 32:21Speaker 3: me if I she's so in love with what I'm doing.
- 32:25Speaker 3: She feels like people want to buy this what you have,
- 32:30Speaker 3: and she's like, I want to be So she loved
- 32:33Speaker 3: putting people on you know what I mean, Like, she
- 32:36Speaker 3: loved sharing things that she found that she loved that
- 32:40Speaker 3: she thought was great, and she wanted to tell people
- 32:46Speaker 3: about what I was, what I was creating. And so
- 32:49Speaker 3: she was like, look, she knocks on the door. I'm
- 32:52Speaker 3: sitting in the back of my house. I have no
- 32:53Speaker 3: electricity and I'm running the house on a generator.
- 32:57Speaker 2: At this time, because we we were resourceful and I
- 33:04Speaker 2: would sit in the house in total darkness during the
- 33:07Speaker 2: day so that my children could have normalcy when they
- 33:11Speaker 2: came home. So I would have i'd be in the dark,
- 33:17Speaker 2: or I would in the day, I would sit in any
- 33:21Speaker 2: dark all day, or I would go away from the
- 33:24Speaker 2: house while my children were at school so that when
- 33:28Speaker 2: they came home they could have the electricity, or I
- 33:31Speaker 2: could you know, I could have enough gas for them
- 33:34Speaker 2: to have electricity.
- 33:35Speaker 3: They never complained in this season. They never told anybody.
- 33:41Speaker 3: They just went to school and ate because they knew
- 33:43Speaker 3: that's what they had to do.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Yeah, they never told.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Nobody about oh we don't have this or that. They
- 33:48Speaker 3: didn't say, you know, poor me, woe is me or
- 33:51Speaker 3: anything like that.
- 33:52Speaker 2: They just they just did. So, you know, so now
- 33:57Speaker 2: you see what I'm using this water be my handwalk
- 34:00Speaker 2: because I need to get some of the excess off
- 34:04Speaker 2: of my hands right now.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Okay, So your kids are troopers, your husband's trooping, and
- 34:10Speaker 1: you're being the most.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Okay, so it's going to bake sales fairs all that
- 34:19Speaker 2: kind of stuff at their schools and things like that.
- 34:22Speaker 2: So when my neighbor knocks on the door, she asks
- 34:24Speaker 2: me to make cupcakes for all of her clients for
- 34:27Speaker 2: this season. I'm sitting in the house of no electricity
- 34:29Speaker 2: because we don't have any we can't afford it. Yeah,
- 34:32Speaker 2: and so I'm doing this Dave Ramsey Baby Step plan
- 34:34Speaker 2: where I'm stuffing cash into envelopes. Whatever my husband's gonna
- 34:38Speaker 2: bring home, I'm putting in envelopes, and I'm saving a
- 34:41Speaker 2: little bit to take care of what he calls covering
- 34:43Speaker 2: your four walls.
- 34:45Speaker 3: That is your food, your utilities, your shelter, your transportation.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Like the basics and planets up. This is Dave Ramsey's plan.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Oh okay, this is called the baby Steps plan. This
- 34:57Speaker 2: is just how you just tackle the beginning of trying
- 35:01Speaker 2: to get out of debt. Okay.
- 35:02Speaker 3: And so it's your food, your utilities, your shelter, and
- 35:07Speaker 3: your transportation.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Got it.
- 35:09Speaker 3: So you do them in order, Like if all you
- 35:12Speaker 3: got enough for is food, then that's what you're doing
- 35:14Speaker 3: food and nothing else.
- 35:15Speaker 2: If all you've.
- 35:15Speaker 3: Got enough for is food and utilities, and you know,
- 35:19Speaker 3: it's about prioritizing, you know what's important.
- 35:23Speaker 2: And so.
- 35:25Speaker 3: I was putting money in envelopes and I didn't have
- 35:28Speaker 3: enough to do anything. I didn't have enough to make
- 35:31Speaker 3: the ends meet. I didn't have enough for the electricity bill.
- 35:34Speaker 3: I didn't have enough money for anything, and I realized
- 35:38Speaker 3: that I only had five dollars left to my name,
- 35:41Speaker 3: and I hadn't fed our.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Children for the week.
- 35:43Speaker 3: When she knocked on the door, I hadn't bought anything,
- 35:46Speaker 3: and so she asked me to make cupcakes, which is
- 35:49Speaker 3: gonna be six hundred cupcakes. And I'm thinking, how am
- 35:54Speaker 3: I supposed to do this? I'm sitting in this house
- 35:56Speaker 3: with no electricity. She asked me why I was sitting
- 35:58Speaker 3: in the dark even and I said because because I'm meditating,
- 36:02Speaker 3: and she took it.
- 36:04Speaker 1: She believed that I was like, oh, so then she
- 36:10Speaker 1: places this order for six hundred.
- 36:11Speaker 3: Then, and she said, as you make some, I'll pay you.
- 36:16Speaker 3: You make you give me a little, I'll pay.
- 36:17Speaker 2: You a little.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Why would you order six hundred?
- 36:20Speaker 3: Because she wanted to give them to everybody. Remember I
- 36:23Speaker 3: told you she was known for putting.
- 36:25Speaker 1: This is a really good neighbor.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Yes, she is an amazing need to this day, she's
- 36:30Speaker 2: an amazing name.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Oh you guys are still neighbors.
- 36:32Speaker 3: Yeah, well, well she's she's moved out of the neighborhood now.
- 36:35Speaker 3: But she's still very much like she's my grand baby's godmother.
- 36:41Speaker 3: My children very much are you know? She was a
- 36:44Speaker 3: part of their lives.
- 36:45Speaker 1: So the six hundred cupcakes? How do you manage this order?
- 36:49Speaker 3: So what I did was she said she would pay
- 36:52Speaker 3: me when I gave her some.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Give me something, I'll pay you some. And so I said, okay,
- 36:57Speaker 2: I took the five, closed the door and say, all right, God,
- 37:00Speaker 2: what you want me do with this? Because like, you
- 37:02Speaker 2: give me this opportunity when I have no money to
- 37:04Speaker 2: take it? And I heard God say, but I the
- 37:06Speaker 2: eve birds and they don't toil a store up in barns.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Okay God.
- 37:10Speaker 3: And so I was like, okay, I'm gonna put my
- 37:13Speaker 3: shoes on. I'm gonna test you and see if what
- 37:15Speaker 3: you say is real? Okay, And I take the five
- 37:18Speaker 3: dollars and I go to the grocery store that's just
- 37:20Speaker 3: a couple of blocks from my house. Because by now
- 37:23Speaker 3: our cars are even you repossess?
- 37:26Speaker 1: Yes, why you had onion rings?
- 37:28Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, our cars are Our cars are repossessed.
- 37:31Speaker 3: And how much is an onion ring? An onion is
- 37:34Speaker 3: a dollar most people, I mean it depending on what
- 37:38Speaker 3: side you get. And this is something my baby likes.
- 37:41Speaker 3: So he's gonna come home and have joy because I've
- 37:44Speaker 3: made him something that he loves. And so when you're
- 37:48Speaker 3: when you're in a situation like this, you need to
- 37:51Speaker 3: have little little bits of joy wherever you can get there.
- 37:54Speaker 3: And so I go and I buy everything I can
- 37:57Speaker 3: buy with that five dollars, and I turned it in to.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Sixty that day because she, like she said she was,
- 38:03Speaker 2: she paid me.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Wow.
- 38:04Speaker 2: And so then I.
- 38:05Speaker 1: To look at that just just for you guys, listen,
- 38:08Speaker 1: she took five dollars and turned it into sixty. In
- 38:11Speaker 1: the world of business, that's like astronomics.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Yeah, because how what kind of percentage rate is that?
- 38:16Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 38:17Speaker 1: I'm not good at math, but it's pretty amazing.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:20Speaker 3: So then, and I didn't even have I didn't even
- 38:22Speaker 3: have enough money to start really, And a lot of
- 38:25Speaker 3: people say, well, how in the world did you buy
- 38:28Speaker 3: you know, enough ingredients? Because I used what I had
- 38:32Speaker 3: to get what I wanted. Right, So in my house
- 38:36Speaker 3: we always had flour, so that's not something I had
- 38:40Speaker 3: to purchase. In my house, we always had rising.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Ingredients, bac and soda, bacon. You know, these are things
- 38:47Speaker 2: that most houses have yetting them already, so all I
- 38:50Speaker 2: had to get was the bear necessities. And all I.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Needed to get was a place that I could produce
- 38:57Speaker 3: so she could pay me. Yeah, once I had profit
- 39:00Speaker 3: mixed in there, I could go buy whatever I need it.
- 39:04Speaker 1: So then you make this sixty dollars, then you go,
- 39:07Speaker 1: how long does it take you to turn around the rest?
- 39:09Speaker 1: Because I'm sure you Oh, okay.
- 39:10Speaker 2: So I take this. I put the five back that
- 39:14Speaker 2: I started with just in case.
- 39:15Speaker 3: I burn everything, and then I turned that into six hundred.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Okay.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Then I've been flipping that same money in the last
- 39:24Speaker 2: seventeen years.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Say that one more time for the people in the bag.
- 39:30Speaker 1: She took that six hundred and she been flipping it
- 39:32Speaker 1: for the next seventeen years. And you became a millionaire
- 39:35Speaker 1: doing this.
- 39:36Speaker 2: With no debt. I did it with no knowledge of
- 39:39Speaker 2: the business. I did it with no experience.
- 39:41Speaker 3: I did it losing the house that the bakery is
- 39:44Speaker 3: in today because I believed that if God is who
- 39:49Speaker 3: he says he is, he can do what he says
- 39:51Speaker 3: he can do.
- 39:53Speaker 1: You did it losing the house.
- 39:55Speaker 3: Losing the house on the day that I opened the bakery,
- 39:58Speaker 3: I opened the cupcake Collection on November nine, two thousand
- 40:02Speaker 3: and eight. The house was up for foreclosure sale on
- 40:05Speaker 3: that day, so we knew that we would lose the
- 40:08Speaker 3: house in December.
- 40:09Speaker 2: On the courthouse steps.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Were you thinking, like, worst case, you're gonna move into
- 40:12Speaker 1: the bakery.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Yeah, we're no. We the bakery was our house. Oh
- 40:17Speaker 3: oh oh geez. So the cupcake collection was housed in
- 40:20Speaker 3: our and what was my husband's former man cave, so
- 40:25Speaker 3: he had given me where his pool table was and
- 40:28Speaker 3: all that.
- 40:28Speaker 2: It had its own separate entrance.
- 40:30Speaker 1: So you're doing all this your husband was your actual husband. Yeah,
- 40:34Speaker 1: so you're running a company, and I mean, I suck
- 40:36Speaker 1: at heartbreak. I'll tell you right now. I get heartbreak.
- 40:39Speaker 1: I almost can't even function. So you need too, Okay,
- 40:44Speaker 1: you too. But you're kind of gang yeah, I mean,
- 40:46Speaker 1: so you know, gangster to me is a word of
- 40:48Speaker 1: like endearment and strength. So I don't know.
- 40:52Speaker 2: If well, when you when you have babies that are
- 40:56Speaker 2: looking to you, like think about mother birds.
- 41:00Speaker 3: Other birds go out they put food in their baby's
- 41:03Speaker 3: mouths and they're sitting there with open mouths looking for
- 41:08Speaker 3: that bird to give them something.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the situation.
- 41:12Speaker 3: I was in and ain't no way I wasn't gonna
- 41:15Speaker 3: come through for my kids.
- 41:16Speaker 2: They were my cheerleaders.
- 41:19Speaker 3: I was talking to my son just the other day,
- 41:21Speaker 3: we were driving home from a road trip, and he's like,
- 41:24Speaker 3: it's crazy, Mom.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Now when you walk into rooms, you change them.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Yeah, you already changed our entire studio.
- 41:33Speaker 2: He's like, I don't even remember that. Lady. Wow, I
- 41:37Speaker 2: don't even the girl who started this.
- 41:40Speaker 3: You know who we introduced in the first chapter, who's
- 41:43Speaker 3: hiding from her neighbor because she doesn't want her to
- 41:46Speaker 3: ask questions. I don't even know her no more.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Wow.
- 41:49Speaker 3: Because it's like, there's nothing I don't believe that I
- 41:54Speaker 3: couldn't do. But I wasn't always like this. And that's
- 41:58Speaker 3: what I want your adience to hear. If you see
- 42:02Speaker 3: me doing it, it's an indication that you can do
- 42:05Speaker 3: it too. It's not only available to me, it's also
- 42:09Speaker 3: available to you. You can have whatever you say. The
- 42:15Speaker 3: key is you have to believe that you can. And
- 42:19Speaker 3: for me, this was about believing that I could do
- 42:24Speaker 3: the impossible, and that was to take my family from
- 42:28Speaker 3: struggling and losing everything and drowning in debt to a
- 42:32Speaker 3: place of legacy building and wealth creating not only for us,
- 42:36Speaker 3: but for the people who were connected to us, for
- 42:39Speaker 3: my sisters who live in New Orleans, who I wanted
- 42:42Speaker 3: to see not struggle anymore after years of being in
- 42:46Speaker 3: a business. I took the brand now to New Orleans
- 42:49Speaker 3: and went to one of my sisters and said, if
- 42:52Speaker 3: I taught you how to fish, would you fish?
- 42:54Speaker 2: He said, every day.
- 42:56Speaker 3: And I taught her everything that I could about how
- 42:59Speaker 3: to make this recipe. And she's doing it and it's hard.
- 43:05Speaker 3: And I'm not saying that this is easy. And I
- 43:07Speaker 3: think that's the thing. People see something successful and they
- 43:11Speaker 3: think it's easy. It doesn't get easier just because it
- 43:15Speaker 3: gets bigger.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Your problems just change.
- 43:19Speaker 1: From the beginning. Well, okay, we're gonna throw the commercials
- 43:22Speaker 1: so we can adjust cameras everybody, and she can come
- 43:25Speaker 1: sit closer to me, So throw the commercials. Shout out
- 43:28Speaker 1: to Katie, come out in the room. All right, we're
- 43:31Speaker 1: back and so inspired, so excited about you. I definitely
- 43:37Speaker 1: love you right back. And oh my gosh. All right,
- 43:42Speaker 1: so now that we know that you can turn five
- 43:45Speaker 1: dollars to six hundred and six hundred to a million, Okay,
- 43:50Speaker 1: over over, I mean taking us to school. So let's
- 43:54Speaker 1: talk about the business side. Okay, well, you can try
- 43:58Speaker 1: your own onion rings. I'll tell y'all all the ratings
- 44:00Speaker 1: of these onion rings. They're simply amazing. I'm gonna take
- 44:08Speaker 1: one more on your ring. Then I'm gonna start asking questions.
- 44:11Speaker 1: But I have to enjoy it.
- 44:14Speaker 3: It's such a simple, inexpensive thing, especially when you just
- 44:19Speaker 3: need something salty and crunchy, has a little bit of
- 44:22Speaker 3: sweetness to the undertone, and you can you can salt
- 44:25Speaker 3: it however you want. I believe that it's not smart
- 44:28Speaker 3: to salt something you haven't tasted yet.
- 44:31Speaker 2: You know, you salted these again, Yeah I did.
- 44:34Speaker 1: They were perfect. Okay, guys, they were perfect.
- 44:37Speaker 2: And then I salted them.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Then you salted them. But okay, now I know that
- 44:42Speaker 1: I'm just gonna.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Take your recipe as is.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, just a couple more bites and then I'm
- 44:47Speaker 1: gonna go okay. Oh, the thin ones are smacking.
- 44:50Speaker 3: No, And that's what what I love about them is
- 44:53Speaker 3: when you cut them, as you pull the inner rings out,
- 44:57Speaker 3: you get different you know, you get different experien So
- 45:00Speaker 3: you get a really tiny one from the center. You
- 45:03Speaker 3: get a mouthful of that onion flavor, and then we
- 45:07Speaker 3: get to the outer rings. They're sort of like thinner.
- 45:11Speaker 1: So yeah, it's delicious, just as delicious as this story.
- 45:16Speaker 1: So I just so you know, if you see me
- 45:18Speaker 1: like a little flush, just because our crew is like
- 45:21Speaker 1: timing me by the minute right now, it was up
- 45:24Speaker 1: to me, we'd have a whole another hour. Yeah, but okay,
- 45:28Speaker 1: so let's talk about the business now that the business
- 45:30Speaker 1: is operational. I want to know from the well, I
- 45:36Speaker 1: can only imagine from six dollars to six hundred and
- 45:39Speaker 1: six hundred to growing. Yeah, what were some of those
- 45:41Speaker 1: points where you felt like giving up?
- 45:44Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 45:45Speaker 3: So there was one day in particular that you know,
- 45:49Speaker 3: the baker's open. Now, we had had a sign all
- 45:51Speaker 3: of our friends that were coming all the time, and
- 45:54Speaker 3: they didn't come. And I think a lot of times
- 45:57Speaker 3: we're expecting so much out of our friend and our
- 46:00Speaker 3: family and it's not fair to put that kind of
- 46:03Speaker 3: burden on them. And so I was sitting in my
- 46:06Speaker 3: chair and I had only made seventeen dollars on this
- 46:09Speaker 3: day when my husband calls to check on me and said, how's.
- 46:13Speaker 2: Your day going?
- 46:14Speaker 3: And I got ready to open my mouth and complain.
- 46:17Speaker 3: I got ready to say only made seventeen dollars, and
- 46:20Speaker 3: I stopped myself mid sentence. I said, you know what,
- 46:23Speaker 3: whatever it was, it wasn't a surprise to God. He's
- 46:27Speaker 3: the one that gave me this recipe and this idea,
- 46:29Speaker 3: because this wasn't just a good idea, this was a
- 46:32Speaker 3: God idea, and there's a difference, and so whatever it is,
- 46:36Speaker 3: he sent it, and I'm just gonna.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Be grateful for it.
- 46:40Speaker 3: When I got that in my spirit, Colin, I can't
- 46:43Speaker 3: tell you how much it changed everything.
- 46:45Speaker 1: But then that day when you knew it was seventeen,
- 46:48Speaker 1: it brought a little bit of frustration.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Y Oh yeah, because it was like, I'm sitting there,
- 46:52Speaker 3: I'm waiting for people.
- 46:53Speaker 2: This has been days.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Oh they waited right after your store opened.
- 46:57Speaker 2: Yeah, she's probably a month in. Oh yeah.
- 47:01Speaker 1: I would have been freaking out.
- 47:02Speaker 3: Yeah, because I thought, you know, we had an amazing
- 47:04Speaker 3: first day, and I thought people were just gonna come.
- 47:07Speaker 2: I thought, because I put a little three by three.
- 47:09Speaker 3: Sign out in front of my house, that the world
- 47:11Speaker 3: knew that a bakery was opening, and they did not
- 47:14Speaker 3: know that.
- 47:15Speaker 1: So then what was your next move after experiencing that.
- 47:18Speaker 3: I just so, I changed my mind in the moment,
- 47:22Speaker 3: and so I said, just as I was getting ready
- 47:24Speaker 3: to complain, I said, you know what, anything that it is,
- 47:26Speaker 3: God sent it. It wasn't a surprise to him. And
- 47:30Speaker 3: my days turned around almost immediately. I began to have
- 47:34Speaker 3: fifty dollar days and one hundred dollar days. I remember
- 47:38Speaker 3: my first five hundred dollar day, my first thousand dollars day.
- 47:41Speaker 3: And I didn't change the way I handled the money.
- 47:44Speaker 3: I still would take the money in, I would put
- 47:47Speaker 3: it in envelopes.
- 47:48Speaker 2: I would pay Uncle Sam.
- 47:49Speaker 3: First, I would put the money for the ingredients back first,
- 47:52Speaker 3: and anything that was left was mine to keep for
- 47:55Speaker 3: electric bills, fulfilled money for whatever it was that my
- 47:59Speaker 3: children needed.
- 48:00Speaker 2: And I began I began.
- 48:01Speaker 3: Realizing that I couldn't reveal everything that I was learning,
- 48:05Speaker 3: even in my own household, because, like I told you before,
- 48:09Speaker 3: as a stay at home mom my, my husband only
- 48:12Speaker 3: brought to me whatever he was done with. Yeah, it
- 48:14Speaker 3: wasn't like, here's the money, you manage it together and
- 48:19Speaker 3: then go from there.
- 48:21Speaker 1: So you were getting the leftovers. You weren't getting a
- 48:23Speaker 1: whole check to like manage it.
- 48:24Speaker 2: I was getting the leftovers, and so I knew.
- 48:27Speaker 3: I began to learn that I had to manage what
- 48:30Speaker 3: I was making, and I started stuffing envelopes and hiding money.
- 48:36Speaker 1: I love that you keep talking about stuffing envelopes. I
- 48:38Speaker 1: always tell people people always, like my husband, He'll say
- 48:41Speaker 1: to me, well, if I had a million dollars, I'm like, dude,
- 48:44Speaker 1: planet Earth right now, Okay, if we can't manage five
- 48:48Speaker 1: hundred dollars, yeah, don't think it's gonna be different when
- 48:51Speaker 1: we get a million. If you can't manage that little bit.
- 48:54Speaker 1: And I tell everybody all my mentees a hundred times, guys,
- 48:58Speaker 1: if you can't manage fifty, well you won't be able
- 49:00Speaker 1: to match. It doesn't matter how much money you make,
- 49:03Speaker 1: you still got to be able to manage it. And
- 49:04Speaker 1: to hear you talk about envelopes, because that's something I
- 49:07Speaker 1: go to with my cousin all the time. Always tell
- 49:10Speaker 1: him like, look, if you're struggling with budget management, I
- 49:14Speaker 1: have him on a budget right now. I'm like, go
- 49:17Speaker 1: old school withdraw the cash and use envelopes and mark envelopes.
- 49:21Speaker 3: And living because when you're in a situation like I
- 49:24Speaker 3: was in, if you're even.
- 49:26Speaker 2: One penny off a literal cent off. They will bounce
- 49:31Speaker 2: your check.
- 49:32Speaker 3: And then you will be looking for how you're You know,
- 49:35Speaker 3: now you're thirty five dollars off instead of being a
- 49:38Speaker 3: penny off. And I couldn't afford to have those kinds
- 49:41Speaker 3: of mistakes, so I stopped even putting money in the bank.
- 49:46Speaker 1: So the behind the scenes of your life is your accountant,
- 49:48Speaker 1: your baker, your manager.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Your mom.
- 49:51Speaker 3: I'm the cashier, I'm marketing. I had gone to school
- 49:55Speaker 3: at that time. I graduated at that point with a
- 49:58Speaker 3: degree in mass meeting and communications.
- 50:01Speaker 2: So all that.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, superhero, So no tears of frustration or a
- 50:07Speaker 1: bunch of walls or nothing. Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 50:09Speaker 2: And in the midst of this, we're trying.
- 50:11Speaker 3: To rebuild our marriage, which all of this is in
- 50:14Speaker 3: the book. We moved to Nashville to start our lives over,
- 50:18Speaker 3: Remember I.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Said that in a manny.
- 50:20Speaker 3: So in the midst of all that, we're trying to
- 50:22Speaker 3: rebuild a marriage that doesn't end up working out and
- 50:25Speaker 3: we end up deciding to go our separate ways. So
- 50:28Speaker 3: all of these things are happening all at once.
- 50:31Speaker 1: Ye you're a true champion, because I tell you what
- 50:35Speaker 1: I do with my child and my husband is I
- 50:37Speaker 1: run away And my girlfriends think it's hilarious, but I'll
- 50:41Speaker 1: send them a text. I'll be like, look, girls, I
- 50:44Speaker 1: left the house in my slides and were going to
- 50:46Speaker 1: stay in hotels or wherever, but I'm not going home.
- 50:48Speaker 1: And then we'd be like, well why not. I'm like,
- 50:50Speaker 1: it's just so much responsibility, especially when you're building something,
- 50:53Speaker 1: it's like it requires like all of you. And then
- 50:56Speaker 1: if you have a child, she requires all of you,
- 50:58Speaker 1: or your children require all of you.
- 51:00Speaker 3: And then I applaud you that you know to go retreat,
- 51:04Speaker 3: self care and come back.
- 51:06Speaker 1: Well I would call. I tell my friends it's like
- 51:08Speaker 1: survival mode and that is fight or flight. I'm like, yo,
- 51:11Speaker 1: I could have an argument with you leaving the house
- 51:14Speaker 1: for whatever generic stupid reason and like put up road flairs.
- 51:17Speaker 1: As a mom, I feel like you put a broth
- 51:19Speaker 1: for heyes, honey, I need help, Hey honey, And you
- 51:22Speaker 1: know what I'm like, Look, I don't I don't spoke it.
- 51:25Speaker 2: You can't hear me.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Then, and I tell all my girlfriends every mom should
- 51:28Speaker 1: just run away at some point and be like, you
- 51:30Speaker 1: know what, I'm a pull you on you.
- 51:33Speaker 3: My mom used to do that to us. My mother
- 51:35Speaker 3: would disappear on us. And that was before cell phones
- 51:39Speaker 3: were a thing and she was a she was a
- 51:41Speaker 3: single mom. She would hide from us sometimes because it
- 51:44Speaker 3: was all she just needed her own time to recoup
- 51:48Speaker 3: or recover.
- 51:49Speaker 1: And I think it reduces the like I come from
- 51:53Speaker 1: child abuse and I look back at my mom and
- 51:56Speaker 1: I think my mom was such a good mom in
- 51:59Speaker 1: a lot of ways, but I think that there was
- 52:01Speaker 1: just way too much pressure on her. And what happened
- 52:05Speaker 1: is the kids get hurt. Yeah, So in my mind,
- 52:07Speaker 1: I'm like, look before I snap on a two year
- 52:09Speaker 1: old who I absolutely adore, trust me, I wish there
- 52:13Speaker 1: was a parenting died with this poor baby. I'll run.
- 52:16Speaker 1: I'll run, and even if it takes me forty eight
- 52:18Speaker 1: hours or four days, I'll come back and it will
- 52:21Speaker 1: be like nothing, but I run. But for you to
- 52:24Speaker 1: survive all that, I don't know if you ran away,
- 52:28Speaker 1: But if you didn't gangs, I.
- 52:30Speaker 3: Didn't have the opportunity, but I would say that, I
- 52:33Speaker 3: would say that here's what. Here is the recipe that
- 52:36Speaker 3: I want people to hear. If you want to dig
- 52:38Speaker 3: yourself out of debt, you want to have a different scenario.
- 52:41Speaker 2: First, you have to speak it. You have to know
- 52:44Speaker 2: what out looks like for you.
- 52:46Speaker 3: If you don't know what out looks like for you,
- 52:48Speaker 3: then any road will take you there and you will
- 52:50Speaker 3: not know when you are.
- 52:51Speaker 1: Now give me an example of what an out looks like.
- 52:54Speaker 3: Yeah, So for me, getting out meant electric electricity is
- 52:58Speaker 3: being paid. I wish trying to help make the ends meet.
- 53:02Speaker 1: I mean, but you surpassed them.
- 53:03Speaker 3: Yeah, And that's the thing that I'm trying to say.
- 53:07Speaker 3: When you decide what it looks like for you, you
- 53:10Speaker 3: will know when you've gotten there. And you need to
- 53:13Speaker 3: be able to have small winds. If you can get
- 53:16Speaker 3: small winds, you can create bigger winds. For me, it
- 53:19Speaker 3: was I needed to be able to make the electricity
- 53:22Speaker 3: stay on.
- 53:23Speaker 1: I mean, this electricity sound like a really serious issue.
- 53:26Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 53:27Speaker 3: And then because if our house was dark. We live
- 53:30Speaker 3: in Nashville, it snows, it gets cold. Your children are
- 53:34Speaker 3: looking at you like, how am I supposed to do
- 53:36Speaker 3: my homework? We don't have any lights. This was a
- 53:39Speaker 3: regular occurrence in our house. Not only did we not
- 53:43Speaker 3: sometimes have lights, we didn't have water either, So I
- 53:46Speaker 3: would be walking to the store lugging home jugs of
- 53:49Speaker 3: water which is heavy. Sometimes my little baby walking behind me.
- 53:53Speaker 2: You don't want your children to see this, No, and
- 53:56Speaker 2: I decided that I wanted more for my children.
- 53:58Speaker 3: I did not sign up for this. But for me,
- 54:01Speaker 3: this my idea was better or worse looked like I
- 54:04Speaker 3: couldn't decide. Now, this is the level of worse I want,
- 54:08Speaker 3: and this is the let more better I want, because
- 54:11Speaker 3: for better or worse means for better or in the marriage.
- 54:15Speaker 1: Okay, okay, yeah for me, I agree. Like for me,
- 54:19Speaker 1: it's extremely important from my family's stand to one room.
- 54:22Speaker 2: So I sacrificed a lot.
- 54:24Speaker 4: Yeah, Grace and Jesus Christ himself if you like, Oh
- 54:27Speaker 4: he said forgive seven time, seventy seven seven seven time. Okay, Lord,
- 54:32Speaker 4: but yeah, no, I I can relate to that because
- 54:35Speaker 4: there are times where I oh that husband. Yeah, but
- 54:39Speaker 4: but but that's that's kudos to you for sticking out
- 54:42Speaker 4: twenty one years.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Well really it wasn't.
- 54:44Speaker 3: Really, it was really not kudos to me as much.
- 54:49Speaker 3: It was I was afraid of God. And let me
- 54:51Speaker 3: tell you. When I was being awakened at three seventeen
- 54:54Speaker 3: in the morning, one of the last Bible verses that
- 54:56Speaker 3: I got was I set before you.
- 54:59Speaker 2: It was dude to to me thirty nineteen and Joshua
- 55:02Speaker 2: one nine.
- 55:03Speaker 3: I said, before you life and death, blessings and curses.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Choose life so your family can live. And if you
- 55:10Speaker 3: will do everything that I have set before you, then
- 55:14Speaker 3: I will make you prosperous wherever you go, and everything
- 55:18Speaker 3: that you do will be prosperous.
- 55:21Speaker 2: That was what God told me, and then he stopped
- 55:23Speaker 2: waking me up.
- 55:25Speaker 3: I understood that everything that had been given to me
- 55:29Speaker 3: at three o'clock in the morning was a collaboration with God.
- 55:33Speaker 3: It was a dropping in the atmosphere. I have something
- 55:36Speaker 3: for you, man. I'm tired of you starting businesses. I'm
- 55:39Speaker 3: tired of you quitting them. There's people who would love
- 55:42Speaker 3: to have even one idea that I've given you that
- 55:45Speaker 3: you started and just let go. So this is the
- 55:48Speaker 3: last thing I'm giving you, And if you don't do this,
- 55:50Speaker 3: I'm not giving you anything else.
- 55:52Speaker 2: And it was a choice to live or to die,
- 55:57Speaker 2: and I believed it.
- 55:59Speaker 3: I believe that if I didn't do this, I wasn't
- 56:02Speaker 3: getting anything else. And a lot of times we think
- 56:04Speaker 3: we're afraid to fail. I thought I was afraid to
- 56:07Speaker 3: fail at business. It wasn't that I was afraid to fail.
- 56:10Speaker 3: I was afraid to succeed. Many of us are afraid.
- 56:14Speaker 2: Of success, not failure, because if we failed, if we
- 56:18Speaker 2: thought we were.
- 56:18Speaker 3: Gonna fail, we wouldn't come to the thing anyway. We
- 56:20Speaker 3: wouldn't tell anybody about it. We wouldn't tell anybody about
- 56:23Speaker 3: our idea, we wouldn't ask them.
- 56:25Speaker 2: To be a part of it if we really believed
- 56:27Speaker 2: that we would fail. But we're afraid to succeed because
- 56:29Speaker 2: if we're successful, that means I have to show up
- 56:32Speaker 2: when I don't feel like coming. It means I have
- 56:34Speaker 2: to show up and do this when I'm tired. When
- 56:36Speaker 2: all my girlfriends went out last night, I got to
- 56:38Speaker 2: stay home because I need to be in my kitchen
- 56:41Speaker 2: at two thirty in the morning making mix. And I'm
- 56:43Speaker 2: going to be in.
- 56:44Speaker 3: Here by myself while everybody gets to go on the vacation.
- 56:47Speaker 3: On the trip, I gotta stay back and I've got
- 56:50Speaker 3: to open up the store because I have nobody to
- 56:52Speaker 3: help me. And it took me seventeen years to get
- 56:55Speaker 3: to a place where I could have a real vacation.
- 56:59Speaker 3: I haven't worked seventeen since the cup cayears, since the
- 57:02Speaker 3: cupcake collection.
- 57:03Speaker 1: And what was that vacation?
- 57:05Speaker 2: Just curious.
- 57:05Speaker 3: I can't even remember. I can't really remember, you know
- 57:10Speaker 3: what it was. But I remember sitting back and saying, Wow,
- 57:12Speaker 3: I really just went on vacation. And the bakery is
- 57:15Speaker 3: literally the Cupcake Collection is still operating right now.
- 57:18Speaker 1: And then.
- 57:20Speaker 3: Because we would all have to break as a family,
- 57:23Speaker 3: we would have to close down, not make any money,
- 57:25Speaker 3: and we'd have to go away as a family and
- 57:27Speaker 3: then come back to it. My goal at that point
- 57:30Speaker 3: was to be able to have it operating.
- 57:32Speaker 2: So your goals can move. You can move the needle
- 57:36Speaker 2: on your goals.
- 57:37Speaker 3: And it is prudent to move your needle on your
- 57:40Speaker 3: goals because a lot of times people think that I've
- 57:42Speaker 3: got to have this big, gigantic grand plan in order
- 57:45Speaker 3: for it to be successful. And what I'm saying is,
- 57:48Speaker 3: as long as it's in your head, it's an idea.
- 57:50Speaker 3: When you write it down on paper, it becomes a plant.
- 58:08Speaker 3: That's a business plan. You write it down on a
- 58:11Speaker 3: small three by five index card, that is.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Called a business plan.
- 58:15Speaker 3: It's a vision, it's an arrested thought, a thought that
- 58:19Speaker 3: you you know, because we think of a million thoughts
- 58:21Speaker 3: a day, thirty thousand thoughts a day we're thinking, and
- 58:25Speaker 3: you just arrest one of them. You cause one of
- 58:28Speaker 3: those thoughts to come in submission. You write on a
- 58:30Speaker 3: piece of paper and say, this is what I'm gonna do.
- 58:32Speaker 3: So I'm not gonna forget about it. I'm gonna keep
- 58:34Speaker 3: my focus on this thing, and even though I'm scared,
- 58:37Speaker 3: I'm gonna do it anyway, and I'm not gonna stop
- 58:39Speaker 3: showing up to it, even when it's hard. I'm gonna
- 58:42Speaker 3: keep on doing it because what I want is more
- 58:44Speaker 3: important than what I don't want, like sleep, you know,
- 58:50Speaker 3: like maybe I'm gonna miss out on a little bit
- 58:52Speaker 3: of sleep right now, or maybe I'm gonna miss out
- 58:53Speaker 3: on my child, you know, recital, I missed a lot
- 58:57Speaker 3: of things that my children had going on, but it
- 58:59Speaker 3: was more important to me to show up for them
- 59:02Speaker 3: fully in the future then what we had going on
- 59:05Speaker 3: right now. Because when you're in the story, you don't
- 59:08Speaker 3: know what story you're writing. I didn't know this was
- 59:10Speaker 3: the story that I was writing with my life, this
- 59:13Speaker 3: made from scratch story. I didn't know that this was
- 59:15Speaker 3: a story I was writing because when I.
- 59:17Speaker 2: Was in it.
- 59:18Speaker 3: You know how they say you can't see the picture
- 59:20Speaker 3: for the frame. If you're the frame holding the picture,
- 59:22Speaker 3: you're too busy holding the picture to see what the
- 59:24Speaker 3: picture is that you're holding. And the same thing is
- 59:27Speaker 3: with the story. When you're in it. You don't know
- 59:29Speaker 3: what story you're writing. But if you keep in your
- 59:32Speaker 3: mind what story do I want to be told? When
- 59:35Speaker 3: this is just a story that's gonna be told, it
- 59:38Speaker 3: will keep you marching forward to the thing that you
- 59:40Speaker 3: have placed in your mind.
- 59:42Speaker 1: So last question, what is a day in the life
- 59:47Speaker 1: of it? Right now?
- 59:48Speaker 2: Right now?
- 59:49Speaker 1: Right now?
- 59:50Speaker 3: So my children made it their goal to retire me
- 59:53Speaker 3: by my birthday, which is on July fourth, and so
- 59:56Speaker 3: I haven't worked in the daily operation of the business
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: in all of twenty twenty three.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Wait do your children still work for me?
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: My children run the company now legacy. Wow.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: And I love that you use that word, because for me,
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: this is so much bigger than cupcakes.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: We are.
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: I am the daughter of a man that was born
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: on a sugar cane plantation. My father was born on
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: a sugar cane plantation in nineteen forty.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: I mean, this story of yours is riddled with God
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: it's I think, and it's no coincidence because lately I've
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: been getting up at like six in the morning, and
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: I've been like, man, I thought it was because my
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: child wakes up early, but I'm starting to notice I'm
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: waking up before her or there'll be so nice where
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I can't sleep. So I don't think it's a coincidence
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: that I get to experience this story because.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: I feel like God is talking to.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Me through you and this book that you had made
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: from scratch. But let's go back to the answer and
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: the answer to the question of what is a day
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: in the life for you right now? Like from wake
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: up to.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: So right now, I'm tithing my time back to God.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: And so you know how people who are Christians who
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: go to church, they tie their money to a church.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: And so God told me that he wanted me to
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: tithe not only my money but also my time. So
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: I'm tithing my time to God. And first I was like, God, Okay, cool,
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: I'll give you twenty four minutes out of the twenty
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: four hours. He said, no, majon, I want two hours
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: and forty minutes every single day.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: So what does that look like to do that? But
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: what do you do.
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: At four o'clock in the morning, I'm up and I'm
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: doing the same thing I was doing at three seventeen.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: I am spending time getting to hear the voice of
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: my creator and what it is that he wants me
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: to do, what it is he wants me to learn.
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: So I'm reading through this Bible. It could be that.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: It could be worship music. It could be you know,
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: some sermon or a podcast or whatever, something that I'm
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: learning or something that I feel led or drawn to do.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: And that's my first my first two hours and forty
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: minutes a day. Always get that right.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: It doesn't always come exactly like that, but that is
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: my current goal. That's what I'm currently striving for every
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: single day. And then then I'm going around and I'm
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: speaking and I'm telling others about what they can also
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: do gospel.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Yeah, you're sharing.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: I'm a kingdom preneur, and the thing for me is.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: That kingdom preneur. I like that.
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: I'm trying to grow the Kingdom of God so that
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: other people know that as Christians were not supposed to
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: be living in lack. God doesn't want us to have want,
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: but he'll help our want to he'll help our lack
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: of and so I'm just I told God, if you
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: will make me successful, God, if you will do this
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: thing that you're telling me at three seventeen, if you'll
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: do this thing that you're telling me, I will tell
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: anybody who will listen about what they can do if
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: they believe. And He has been faithful to bring I'm
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: sitting here in La with you from Nashville.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: Taking eating while broke onion ring and Guys, I'm a

- 1:04:08Speaker 1: get back into the things that the swing of things
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: with my relationship with God, because there's a lot of
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: stuff that you touched on that I could totally relate to,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: and you know it was I'm so excited that you
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: came through and such a breath of fresh air. And
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna be doing those cupcakes and eating them cupcakes
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: and doing reviews. Everybody there are anything like these onion rings.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Just know I'm I'm gonna repackage and put them in
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: the cupcake holders and pretend like I made them myself.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: That's what I want you to do. That's exactly what
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: I want you to do.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: And it's not stealing.
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: It's I said, I said, you can't steal what was
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: given to you exactly exactly.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: But thank you so much for your time. And then
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: how can people keep up with you? And you could
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: just say it directly into that camera. How can people
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: keep up with you on everything you're doing and like
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: even reach out and somewhat communicate with you, I'm sure. Well,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: now she's on God's time, so she may be able

- 1:05:40Speaker 1: And then I will just say one suggestion is the
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: way she seasoned it with the flower. This is my
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: personal opinion. You don't need to add any extra She
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: did the she did the egg seasoning, she did the
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: flower seasoning, and honestly it's perfect just the way it
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: is now. If you want to go and play with it,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: you can't, but my suggestion is leave it as is.
