- 0:04Speaker 1: And here we go another episode, this time live with
- 0:08Speaker 1: Off the Edge of the podcast Me, your host, Cam Jordan.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm super excited. Not only do I have a pro bowler,
- 0:13Speaker 1: a guy who's been part of the lead for sixteen
- 0:15Speaker 1: years sitting beside me, who's just introduced him. Steve Smith's
- 0:18Speaker 1: senior senior. I mean, there's a junior out there. I
- 0:21Speaker 1: want one of those. I'm never gonna get one, but
- 0:23Speaker 1: I want one of those.
- 0:24Speaker 2: His name is uh deucey mcgoosey. His name is douce,
- 0:27Speaker 2: so I call him do some mcgoosey. Okay, his uh
- 0:30Speaker 2: my full name, uh so. A lot of people always
- 0:34Speaker 2: stink more. My name is Steve right, Steve Smith. It's
- 0:38Speaker 2: not as Steve An. That's my birth name, spelled like stephen,
- 0:42Speaker 2: like it's an st e v O N n E.
- 0:47Speaker 2: And so I saw I called him do some mcgoosey,
- 0:49Speaker 2: or in the mornings when I talked to him Steve.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Okay, Hey, my dad is Steve, and I call I
- 0:58Speaker 1: call him Esteban. That's that long come in. You know,
- 1:02Speaker 1: he got he the light skin swag to him, so
- 1:03Speaker 1: you know, you know, no if he's Puerto Rican Dominican,
- 1:07Speaker 1: Sir dooceygosey. That's that's dope.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I always wanted but but the Deuce is not Deuce. McAllister, right,
- 1:17Speaker 2: but Deuce. I wanted to deuce like Deuce Daley.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Oh okay, okay, I see what you're with there, South
- 1:24Speaker 1: Carolina guy.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I was thinking Duce because you know, no, it is
- 1:29Speaker 2: just but off of I've always loved the name Deuce.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I've always saw.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I had in my mind if I ever have, I
- 1:35Speaker 2: got three boys, If I ever have, it'd be Deuce.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I got one boy. I was like, my my goal
- 1:41Speaker 1: was make the make the first boy his own man,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and then the second boy junior. Because I didn't you
- 1:46Speaker 1: don't want to put pressure either way. I was like,
- 1:47Speaker 1: you don't want to put pressure on but the second one.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Never got a second one boy? Three girls, hashta girl, dad,
- 1:53Speaker 1: It's real, It's super real. I'm scared you got no girls.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I got one girl. Middle child middle child syndrome.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Is the best child. It's not. I'm the oldest, ah,
- 2:04Speaker 1: so I know it's responsibility on man rather than has
- 2:07Speaker 1: that do with me middle child. So you know what
- 2:10Speaker 1: I'm saying, the perfect combo. You gotta think you got
- 2:12Speaker 1: the top who's like, oh man, he's so good, we
- 2:14Speaker 1: should try another me. Then you're like, oh man, he's
- 2:17Speaker 1: so great, we should try another sister. You know we're good.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Hey, I just want to point out if we can, uh,
- 2:23Speaker 2: camera go down. I've never really dealt with this before
- 2:28Speaker 2: because I'm fine nine and I usually have equipment in
- 2:32Speaker 2: my house. Yeah, that's up to my height. Bro, Man,
- 2:37Speaker 2: I'm over here dangling.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Got the got the Kevin Hart can't be a gangster
- 2:43Speaker 1: like this. I was dating while as they can't. They
- 2:45Speaker 1: can't respect the fourteen thousand yards. Don't matter that there's
- 2:48Speaker 1: a there's a little pills like right in there. No
- 2:51Speaker 1: I ever ate lean, I said, Man, oh wait, I
- 2:57Speaker 1: just I just thought. I thought I thought i'd tell
- 2:59Speaker 1: on myself. That's on me. It's nice though, being as high,
- 3:04Speaker 1: you know, it feels good. I'm just six four, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: Pops six five, you know brother six two change, let's
- 3:12Speaker 1: be nice. Wife is short, though she's five seven, she
- 3:15Speaker 1: claims five nine. I'm not sure that she played basketball.
- 3:17Speaker 1: So you know, they lie about the height on.
- 3:18Speaker 2: The time I was six one and Jerry College.
- 3:23Speaker 1: That's how you push that they say Drew is if
- 3:29Speaker 1: they say they say drew By sip By is a lie?
- 3:34Speaker 1: How you five? Now you think it? No? Six? I
- 3:41Speaker 1: have lied before. It was like, no, I'm six five
- 3:42Speaker 1: like my dad. I'm not. Yeah, I'm just swore. But
- 3:45Speaker 1: that's that's as far as my life went. I didn't
- 3:46Speaker 1: go high. I know, well I been six. Hey, no,
- 3:52Speaker 1: you know what? I have the prototype? Gosh darn, it
- 3:54Speaker 1: probably costs myself a couple of Vicks. But it's it's
- 3:57Speaker 1: all good. We're here. I'm dis worried. A lot of people.
- 4:00Speaker 1: You say your say what with shoes on back fields? Yeah? Yes,
- 4:06Speaker 1: seven studs? All right, you got to play. I'm a
- 4:11Speaker 1: lock in. Look you were you know, you were a
- 4:14Speaker 1: finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year.
- 4:19Speaker 1: That's longer than that's more than a yeah. Okay, so
- 4:22Speaker 1: you know you're getting it you semi yeah at some point? Yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So how does it feel to know that you've done
- 4:27Speaker 1: enough work over sixteen years? What does that body of
- 4:30Speaker 1: work show about you? What do you want to be
- 4:32Speaker 1: remembered by?
- 4:34Speaker 2: You know, I'm not necessarily I'm not necessarily sure just
- 4:39Speaker 2: because I'm really out of place in my life right
- 4:43Speaker 2: now that I really don't feel it as much, and
- 4:50Speaker 2: every day goes by, it's becoming less and less. I'm
- 4:54Speaker 2: easing out of it, of being proven myself right, letting
- 5:00Speaker 2: people know or telling them and so because you also
- 5:06Speaker 2: remember at the time when I was playing, I wasn't necessary.
- 5:11Speaker 2: You know, I was always told I wasn't a prototype, right,
- 5:14Speaker 2: I wasn't a prototype playing X receiver write no motion,
- 5:17Speaker 2: staceinary stand on the line of scrimmage number one.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Yes, and and so I.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Just I used to like it. My maturation process mentally
- 5:32Speaker 2: has been so emotionally up and down to the point
- 5:35Speaker 2: of where I've had to do certain things and not
- 5:38Speaker 2: do certain things. Great example, Man, I didn't go to
- 5:41Speaker 2: my ten year anniversary of high school.
- 5:43Speaker 1: You were still playing.
- 5:44Speaker 2: No, it had nothing to do it was it was
- 5:46Speaker 2: they did it in a spray in off season. You
- 5:49Speaker 2: know why I didn't go, man, because my mentals wasn't right.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I was gonna go on that thing. G wag may
- 5:56Speaker 2: call it a lost out reason, yes, and so so
- 6:02Speaker 2: now is man, when I get that call, I get
- 6:06Speaker 2: the opportunity to go jacket. Everybody's anticipating me to sit
- 6:10Speaker 2: up there and talk nonsense, and man, that's not gonna.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Be the case.
- 6:16Speaker 2: There is a lot of thankfulness inside of me, and
- 6:22Speaker 2: there's a part where, Man, I was just a knuckle
- 6:25Speaker 2: ahead from LA and I didn't I never thought about college.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I just wanted to play in the NFL. I just
- 6:33Speaker 2: wanted to be in a thousand yard club. And so
- 6:36Speaker 2: now that I've been in a thousand yard club, I've
- 6:39Speaker 2: experienced it all.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Man.
- 6:43Speaker 2: When it happens, Man, it's the book is closed on
- 6:50Speaker 2: my football career. It's been since February twel February twelve,
- 6:57Speaker 2: February second of two thousand and.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Three.
- 7:07Speaker 2: It is the last thing on my lifetime goals that
- 7:13Speaker 2: I get the markoff.
- 7:16Speaker 1: When you got it too.
- 7:17Speaker 2: The NFL, Yeah, I was the NFL two thousand and one,
- 7:19Speaker 2: two thousand and three, I started a thousand yard season. No,
- 7:23Speaker 2: I get the mark off. I want to be a
- 7:24Speaker 2: Hall of Famer. So that's been my goal. So before
- 7:30Speaker 2: sports psychology became what it is, I had a sports
- 7:33Speaker 2: psychologist when I was playing really and he was a golfer.
- 7:36Speaker 2: He was a golf psychologist. So he taught me how
- 7:39Speaker 2: to go through routine visitation, all of those things, and
- 7:47Speaker 2: so I just that was one of them. It was
- 7:49Speaker 2: by my parents a house, do this be this, be that,
- 7:54Speaker 2: all these laundry lists of things, but the number one
- 7:58Speaker 2: thing that has not been crossed off, Yeah, it's been
- 8:01Speaker 2: a Hall of Famer and that's been my goal. So
- 8:08Speaker 2: after that happens, you know, ask him for the sun.
- 8:14Speaker 1: That's you ready to take me? Now?
- 8:16Speaker 2: Look tagment now right, So that that's just kind of
- 8:20Speaker 2: that's where that's where I'm at. It's not uh, it's
- 8:22Speaker 2: not I told you so, I should have been here.
- 8:24Speaker 2: It's man's real. It's real humbleness and real gratitude and thankfulness.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Right man, that's you.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Wasn't expecting that absolutely, I mean I mean from you. Never.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I never. I never take anybody for what they were
- 8:38Speaker 1: as they are. Now you're supposed to you're not supposed
- 8:41Speaker 1: to be stagnant, and you're supposed to grow and evolve.
- 8:43Speaker 1: You should, hell you should, you should. Uh, somethings stay constant,
- 8:47Speaker 1: you're base of who you are. I think stay is constant.
- 8:49Speaker 1: But you as a person grow. You know, before kids,
- 8:52Speaker 1: I used to be in the club every every sas
- 8:54Speaker 1: Sunday after a win, and every Monday after wind and
- 8:56Speaker 1: every Tuesday. I thought about it, you know, after kids
- 9:01Speaker 1: guess what, maybe I dabble with the lounge. It's on
- 9:04Speaker 1: a Sunday and Monday. Absolutely not because the kids got
- 9:07Speaker 1: soccer and Tuesday for sure, not because my wife means
- 9:10Speaker 1: a date and I got to be there, you know,
- 9:12Speaker 1: And I've got to take care of the body. And
- 9:14Speaker 1: you just as you grow, you just grow you learn,
- 9:16Speaker 1: you know, And that's what the next step of life
- 9:18Speaker 1: is going is going to be about. I can't wait
- 9:20Speaker 1: till one day just be like, Hey, what you got
- 9:21Speaker 1: to do today. Well, I'm not waking up at six
- 9:23Speaker 1: to get in the hyper bearer chamber. I'm not out
- 9:25Speaker 1: by seven thirty to go to walk through the with
- 9:27Speaker 1: the defense. I'm not going before, you know, rehab before
- 9:30Speaker 1: or not. And this is all before nine o'clock. I'm
- 9:32Speaker 1: not going through seven hours of meetings, two hours of
- 9:34Speaker 1: practice and at the end of day, I still got
- 9:35Speaker 1: to go rehab the body and then go take care
- 9:37Speaker 1: of the family and be the dad that they want
- 9:39Speaker 1: me to be and be the husband they need me be.
- 9:41Speaker 1: And also at the end night before I go to sleep,
- 9:43Speaker 1: turn on tape and you look up and you're like, Dan,
- 9:45Speaker 1: it's eleven, Like I was tired two hours ago. You know, like,
- 9:49Speaker 1: I'll look forward to that, but that's it was. But
- 9:52Speaker 1: while you're in it, I look forward to it. I
- 9:54Speaker 1: didn't look forward to those I like because I know
- 9:57Speaker 1: that separates me from everybody else. Stay t tuned, we'll
- 10:00Speaker 1: be right back. You say you don't look for to
- 10:03Speaker 1: those works, but you, bro, you have like four podcasts going, right,
- 10:07Speaker 1: you gotta check out that. You gotta check out the tape.
- 10:09Speaker 1: You gotta go ironed out, right, and then you gotta
- 10:13Speaker 1: eighty nine show and then you gotta uh, I.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Don't know, I forgot.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Yeah. So for a man who says I wi't afford
- 10:22Speaker 1: to it, you've got enough work.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Well yeah, I mean I'm gonna have work just because
- 10:29Speaker 2: you know, I played in the league, uh. And I
- 10:32Speaker 2: realized very early on in the league what it was
- 10:35Speaker 2: in playing in the league was a financial tool to
- 10:38Speaker 2: give me an opportunity to take my sweet time on
- 10:44Speaker 2: what the next phase of my life looks like. And
- 10:49Speaker 2: I just took my time. But also in my off
- 10:52Speaker 2: season during the season, I got accused of having a
- 10:56Speaker 2: d D because I was always trying to do something.
- 10:59Speaker 2: I took an intership with Morgan Saty for two years.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I tried to get on with ups, they said no.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Tried to get on with FedEx, they said no. At
- 11:08Speaker 2: the time I tried. Living in Charlotte, North Carolina, I
- 11:11Speaker 2: tried to purchase and own a Chick fil A and
- 11:18Speaker 2: realize that philosophy. And so it's just there was a
- 11:22Speaker 2: lot of things that I dabbled in just to see
- 11:25Speaker 2: because I was afforded. The shield afforded me an opportunity
- 11:29Speaker 2: to see. And I said, you know what, well, I
- 11:34Speaker 2: got my legs with me. Let's see right, let's absolute.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And so I just did all that, and.
- 11:40Speaker 2: You know, and I learned a lot, you know, for
- 11:44Speaker 2: me in school growing up, I didn't pay attention as
- 11:47Speaker 2: much as I wished I had. But I've had some
- 11:51Speaker 2: great mentors around me. And so I don't have the
- 11:55Speaker 2: master's degree, don't have the doctor, but what I do
- 11:59Speaker 2: have is full blown experience on how running business, how
- 12:04Speaker 2: to manage employees and all that stuff. So, you know,
- 12:09Speaker 2: that's that's that's the luxury I've had and it's been awesome,
- 12:13Speaker 2: and I got some great people that are teaching me
- 12:16Speaker 2: and I'm flourishing now forty six years old and doing
- 12:21Speaker 2: pretty good. You know, commercial do commercial real estate, do
- 12:25Speaker 2: residential real estate, and it's good tea all.
- 12:29Speaker 1: That, and then you still tune into football, so.
- 12:32Speaker 2: You football is Football for me is fun though, but
- 12:35Speaker 2: because I've been around it so long and going to
- 12:38Speaker 2: school at the University of Utah, we weren't known for
- 12:43Speaker 2: having top athletes and been playing against yes then and
- 12:47Speaker 2: playing against top athletes because it used to be the
- 12:51Speaker 2: Mountain West. So we're playing air Force, We're playing Wyoming,
- 12:56Speaker 2: and I don't care what you say about Wyoming. Josh
- 12:59Speaker 2: Josh Allen put on the map, but they still wire
- 13:01Speaker 2: on me, okay, and then after he left, they fell
- 13:04Speaker 2: off the map. Yeah, yeah, so U n l V
- 13:07Speaker 2: New Mexico State, you know. So just experiencing all lot
- 13:13Speaker 2: I knew very quickly at the University of Utah, and
- 13:17Speaker 2: the guy that recruited me, Fred Graves.
- 13:19Speaker 1: He.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Was very instrumental in making sure that I understood football,
- 13:26Speaker 2: that I if I was going to make it to
- 13:28Speaker 2: the league, that I wasn't going to be taught in
- 13:32Speaker 2: the league how to read coverage just I knew how
- 13:35Speaker 2: to read coverage just and when I got to the league,
- 13:38Speaker 2: I just had to adapt to the different names. Right
- 13:41Speaker 2: cover two started to be covered because I was in
- 13:43Speaker 2: the Old West Coast my rookie year, so cover five,
- 13:46Speaker 2: cover seven, like, ain't no such thing as how do
- 13:49Speaker 2: you break field in the step? Yeah so, but uh,
- 13:53Speaker 2: and I learned very quickly. I had all the physical attributes,
- 14:02Speaker 2: but I had to understand and have my shoulders and
- 14:07Speaker 2: above to exceed my physical attributes because I knew that
- 14:12Speaker 2: at some point that was gonna leave me, right, and
- 14:15Speaker 2: I didn't plan on playing very long.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I didn't think I was gonna make it a financial tool.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Sixteen years later, you loved it? No, no, no, you
- 14:25Speaker 1: don't understand.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I thought i'd be kicked out of the league by
- 14:29Speaker 2: my six or seventh year. Berfy, No, bro, I was
- 14:33Speaker 2: just knuckleheads.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Yeah, we said the seat, Yeah, you know everything you
- 14:39Speaker 1: got every play.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Cali guys.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Yeah, hey yeah, I'll say as you know what I'm saying.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Cali guys.
- 14:45Speaker 1: You know so, but you know you went to Utah.
- 14:46Speaker 1: You still root for your your California colleges like I
- 14:51Speaker 1: went to Cal Berkeley, right, I still root for ASU. Okay,
- 14:55Speaker 1: as long as they're not playing Cal where I still clean? Oh,
- 14:58Speaker 1: Arizona products, how about that? Because I I was like, oh, yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 1: of course they supposed to win because so USC didn't
- 15:04Speaker 1: recruit me, so I was too small. San Diego State
- 15:06Speaker 1: said I was too small. That's why I murked San
- 15:08Speaker 1: Diego State when I played them, and State had the nerve. Yeah,
- 15:12Speaker 1: yeah marked him. I had like.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Three catchers for one hundred and fifty hell of a clip, Yeah,
- 15:21Speaker 2: fifty ball to tell you all right, who else?
- 15:27Speaker 1: Hawaii? They didn't, They didn't want me.
- 15:31Speaker 2: And Chad got to Oregon State, but I didn't because
- 15:35Speaker 2: they just I actually said I didn't want to go
- 15:38Speaker 2: play uh at Oregon, stay with Chad uh so with
- 15:42Speaker 2: the Utah.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Yeah, because I wanted to be number one. Yeah, Okay,
- 15:49Speaker 1: are you saying it's not competitive but it's overly competitive?
- 15:51Speaker 2: Oh, I'm definitely competitive.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Yeah. You said you saw football is a financial tools.
- 15:55Speaker 1: No I did.
- 15:56Speaker 2: No, I did see football as a financial tool, right,
- 15:59Speaker 2: not in the beginning.
- 16:00Speaker 1: It doesn't take away from the competitive part, No, it does.
- 16:03Speaker 2: But I did learn about football and the business of football,
- 16:08Speaker 2: and so I use that that that's always at the
- 16:10Speaker 2: forefront of my mind that this is a business. This
- 16:14Speaker 2: this media game is a straight business. And if you
- 16:19Speaker 2: don't understand it, you're playing checkers, but you get paid
- 16:23Speaker 2: by playing chess.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Absolutely, you stay in the league longer by playoff chess.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Look you understand, oh okay, this is my role. And
- 16:29Speaker 1: whether that's veteran leadership role, whether that's star player role,
- 16:32Speaker 1: whether that's special teams player role, everybody has a role.
- 16:36Speaker 1: You have to figure out your niche to stay your niche.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Well, the other part who remembers Bobby Fisher the checkers player,
- 16:44Speaker 2: chess the chess player. The movie is about Bobby Fisher
- 16:47Speaker 2: for the chess the mental aspect of it. So for me,
- 16:50Speaker 2: it's always been I've always thoughted things. I'm very curious
- 16:54Speaker 2: and I've always thought of things, overthinking and just looking
- 16:59Speaker 2: at it very distracting different.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Okay, I would say, so you know, now that you're
- 17:04Speaker 1: outside of football your analyst role, do you do you
- 17:09Speaker 1: look at it like you're like, what would you do
- 17:11Speaker 1: if you're a player, or you sort of take yourself
- 17:13Speaker 1: out of it. I try to take myself out of it.
- 17:15Speaker 2: But what I do do is when I see a
- 17:18Speaker 2: wi receiver, if I see a receiver flinch or I
- 17:21Speaker 2: see some tendencies, If I see a wide receiver that's
- 17:24Speaker 2: constantly catching the ball with his chest. I remember what
- 17:27Speaker 2: that was like, I remember why I did that. Yes,
- 17:32Speaker 2: and so I utilize my experience and knowing why that
- 17:37Speaker 2: guy doesn't. Now, that guy may not like that I'm
- 17:39Speaker 2: saying that, but it's the truth. And so that's that's
- 17:43Speaker 2: the balance where sometimes it gets a little fuzzy. Yeah,
- 17:48Speaker 2: but I I really say, Okay, when I was there
- 17:52Speaker 2: and I didn't catch the ball on my hands because
- 17:54Speaker 2: I was I was a hands catcher.
- 17:56Speaker 1: But when I when.
- 17:57Speaker 2: I have some rockiness, when I when I got chuck
- 18:00Speaker 2: a little bit right, especially in the office, I was in. Man,
- 18:05Speaker 2: it's third down, third and fifteen. You know it's a
- 18:08Speaker 2: drop back.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I'm running deep over the middle, right, say, if you
- 18:11Speaker 1: come over the top, safety coming over top, I'm gonna
- 18:13Speaker 1: get hit with the ball.
- 18:14Speaker 2: So I got to decide do I got to get
- 18:16Speaker 2: hit with the ball or without the ball, because either
- 18:18Speaker 2: way you getting that. And so I'm going, man, I
- 18:26Speaker 2: know what's going on. I know what's happening. I gotta
- 18:29Speaker 2: be able to know and figure out. So I just
- 18:33Speaker 2: always thought about things and just in a different way.
- 18:40Speaker 1: So off cameras, we talked about keeping up something like
- 18:46Speaker 1: memorabilia from you know, your career. What is something that
- 18:50Speaker 1: you wish you would have kept and what is something
- 18:51Speaker 1: that you still have?
- 18:53Speaker 2: So something I wish I would have been involved in more.
- 18:57Speaker 2: If you probably won't, but if you ever watched television
- 19:03Speaker 2: or sometimes with the Carolina Panthers when you're playing out
- 19:06Speaker 2: there and they'll show back in the day. Two thousand
- 19:09Speaker 2: and three, when we went to the Super Bowl, we
- 19:13Speaker 2: won the NFC championship game in Philadelphia. Man, I was
- 19:18Speaker 2: so pissed at that game because I was thinking about
- 19:21Speaker 2: the next phase. I'm like, Bro, this the kind of
- 19:24Speaker 2: offense we running, We're gonna lose the game. I never
- 19:28Speaker 2: held the trophy because I was so pissed.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I didn't even want to be on that.
- 19:36Speaker 2: And now looking back, I go, Bro, you should have
- 19:39Speaker 2: the NFL. Me going to the NFL was like you know,
- 19:42Speaker 2: in California, Pcach Highway PCAA highway starts at Santa Monica
- 19:48Speaker 2: all the way up to no like northern California, California.
- 19:55Speaker 2: NFL was my pch and I wish I would have.
- 20:00Speaker 2: I was driving a nice car, the NFL convertible, and
- 20:04Speaker 2: you know what I never did, never looked at that
- 20:06Speaker 2: at the cliff side and received a little bro I
- 20:08Speaker 2: never I never put the rag top down, and I
- 20:11Speaker 2: never stopped and watch the sunset. So I just wish
- 20:14Speaker 2: I would have enjoyed it more, right, And so that's
- 20:17Speaker 2: the thing.
- 20:19Speaker 1: What did you keep that you're proud that you kept?
- 20:22Speaker 2: And I kept you know, I kept my shoulder pads,
- 20:26Speaker 2: kept my helmet. I got both my helmets for both teams.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Man.
- 20:31Speaker 2: I you know, I kept selling my footballs that I
- 20:33Speaker 2: didn't give away or give the family members or friends.
- 20:37Speaker 2: But the biggest thing I think that why I kept
- 20:40Speaker 2: some of it, man, is it's kind of cool as
- 20:43Speaker 2: my kids are older, Yeah, how much they value it
- 20:47Speaker 2: and some of the stuff that I gave giving them.
- 20:50Speaker 2: But one of the coolest things I have is, uh
- 20:53Speaker 2: have two pictures.
- 20:54Speaker 1: One of them is me.
- 20:58Speaker 2: At training camp and I'm holding my daughter. And my
- 21:02Speaker 2: daughter's twenty three. Now, she will never be that small,
- 21:06Speaker 2: but that's how I see her.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:07Speaker 2: So I got that picture blown up and it's a
- 21:10Speaker 2: color picture, but I gotta blown up into black and white,
- 21:15Speaker 2: and she's in color and it's highlighting her.
- 21:18Speaker 1: There goes my baby. Yeah. So uh so that that
- 21:22Speaker 1: that's I don't know. I'm not ready for the old kids.
- 21:25Speaker 1: I'm not ready for those problems. I need my kids
- 21:27Speaker 1: to say kids, I can't. I got three girls. I'm scared.
- 21:30Speaker 1: They gonna grow up no matter what, man, and that's'm
- 21:32Speaker 1: gonna stay. I'm gonna stay about two seventy when I retire.
- 21:34Speaker 1: I'm jad gonna be lean me. I got a lot
- 21:38Speaker 1: of fights in front of me. No, no, I don't
- 21:40Speaker 1: need no jazz. Just the thingers, just one or two. Hey.
- 21:47Speaker 1: But that being said, look, I know, I know you.
- 21:50Speaker 1: You got that time to go? Did you? Did you
- 21:52Speaker 1: check out the thirty three points by Denver scored in
- 21:56Speaker 1: the fourth quarter?
- 21:56Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 21:57Speaker 1: Just the Giants? Yes? How does it happen? About playing prehistoric? Historic?
- 22:03Speaker 1: So here's the here's the conservative play for sure, here's.
- 22:07Speaker 2: The here's the thing that's really interesting about that. When
- 22:12Speaker 2: you look at Denver, that's remarkable and it's gonna be
- 22:15Speaker 2: talked about for ages. However, it's gonna be short lived
- 22:19Speaker 2: because Denver is a team that is doing a little
- 22:22Speaker 2: bit too much in the past game, putting too much
- 22:25Speaker 2: on their young quarterback that can style. You know, he's
- 22:28Speaker 2: almost your age, I know, but experience though, experience wise,
- 22:32Speaker 2: experience wise, I believe it's gonna stymy him because you
- 22:35Speaker 2: know Sean Payton, he is really smart. He's also stuck
- 22:40Speaker 2: in his ways definitely, and I personally, my humble opinion
- 22:45Speaker 2: is things are starting too. They're putting more on his
- 22:48Speaker 2: plate and it's impact in the offense. They're not running
- 22:52Speaker 2: football like they should. They're constantly and doing a lot
- 22:56Speaker 2: of razzle dazzle yep, and man, he's just gotta sometimes
- 22:59Speaker 2: uncompls k football and headed off to the dude that
- 23:02Speaker 2: who's a running back?
- 23:04Speaker 1: Right? Hm me, that's that's true. That's true too. And
- 23:09Speaker 1: it was giants. Is not like they came back against
- 23:12Speaker 1: really having two eagles or you know.
- 23:14Speaker 2: But had a thirty three, a thirty three pointer heads
- 23:17Speaker 2: thirty three and you hold on. You scored thirty three
- 23:21Speaker 2: points in in fifteen minutes and he ain't done nothing
- 23:26Speaker 2: for the first three or first forty five. Then that thing, yes,
- 23:30Speaker 2: whatever it was, but that's what happened.
- 23:32Speaker 1: That that is I love football like any given sunday
- 23:35Speaker 1: like this, and that's probably they can make a football
- 23:39Speaker 1: player seem delusional because you can feel like you could
- 23:41Speaker 1: win any and every game. Yeah, because it's possible. You
- 23:43Speaker 1: see Super Bowl Atlanta Falcons Patriots twenty twenty four to three. Yeah,
- 23:49Speaker 1: and all of a sudden you're like, oh, this game's over. No,
- 23:51Speaker 1: it ain't. You see those finsters for the coaches.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Hey, they started for it prevot, Yeah, I prevent for
- 23:57Speaker 2: your they start.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Tearing you off.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Hey, man, That's the one thing as an analyst I
- 24:02Speaker 2: look back. I wish I'd have had the opportunity to
- 24:06Speaker 2: do a little bit of TV work before I play,
- 24:09Speaker 2: because it's.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Really shut yourself outside the game.
- 24:12Speaker 2: It made me see the game as a business. They're
- 24:15Speaker 2: not as my dream.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:17Speaker 2: So you know, when you don't catch your pass, you
- 24:19Speaker 2: don't get the opportunity to line up where you want to.
- 24:21Speaker 2: You're mad about you a you mad at the person
- 24:23Speaker 2: who didn't assign you your opportunity. Man, Now, sit back
- 24:27Speaker 2: and I understand the complexity, but also the nonsense that
- 24:32Speaker 2: goes on. How a guy who's drafted gets more opportunity
- 24:35Speaker 2: than a guy that's not. But the guy is not, Hey,
- 24:39Speaker 2: they can't give him a chance because they're now on
- 24:41Speaker 2: the scout or whoever stood on the table for this
- 24:43Speaker 2: kid is looking like a before. So it's a lot
- 24:46Speaker 2: there's a lot of complications going through that. I just
- 24:49Speaker 2: I'm like, It's made me a lot of times when
- 24:52Speaker 2: I'm sitting on camera or I'm sitting in a studio
- 24:54Speaker 2: and I'll say something right before I said, you'll see
- 24:57Speaker 2: me snicker because now I'm dialing back.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Keep seeing it. Yeah, I'm seeing it. But I'm really going, man,
- 25:02Speaker 1: there's some bull Jesus happening, and what you should play
- 25:08Speaker 1: him because he's clearly more or because he's proven. But
- 25:11Speaker 1: you got this young bud that you just invested a
- 25:13Speaker 1: first round or you just paid or I'll give.
- 25:16Speaker 2: You another example. So you know how Daniel Jones is
- 25:19Speaker 2: playing for the Colts.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Yeah, but if you listen to all that, they said,
- 25:24Speaker 3: the reason he he went to the Colts is because
- 25:28Speaker 3: it was the it was a sure legitimate shot to start,
- 25:33Speaker 3: opportunity for competition Versus most teams.
- 25:39Speaker 2: They're not bringing in a veteran to compete. They're bringing
- 25:42Speaker 2: in a veteran to help this young fellow with his mind.
- 25:46Speaker 2: And so that's why Daniel didn't didn't take the opportunity
- 25:49Speaker 2: to stay in Minnesota, right, Jajon McCarthy, Yeah, and then
- 25:56Speaker 2: and and and Sam Donald didn't play well. But Kevin
- 26:00Speaker 2: O'Connell fired Sam at the podium. He was like, yeah,
- 26:04Speaker 2: he cham just didn't play good enough. We go on
- 26:06Speaker 2: with JJ you remember, and it was like, wow.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Look at that logan right Nowold Sam looking decent over Seattle.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Decent Sam looking decent. You know, that's the word one
- 26:16Speaker 1: to use. They're also highly powered Jackson Instnership Shift and Joe.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I'm not sure how to say his name. He's a
- 26:23Speaker 1: dog who ja that's well, who's throwing it to him? Sam?
- 26:28Speaker 1: I said, okay, better than Damns. Jadam is not throwing
- 26:31Speaker 1: it to Sam out there dropping dying. No, I'm still
- 26:34Speaker 1: stuck on Sam from the Jets and that's me. So
- 26:36Speaker 1: when I say good, no, you're really just tainted. Yeah.
- 26:39Speaker 1: But just like Geno Smith had his run back after
- 26:41Speaker 1: he let the Jets, it might just be the Jets anyway.
- 26:44Speaker 1: That's another conversation. Thank you so much for coming on
- 26:46Speaker 1: the podcast. This is off the Edge of Cam Jordan.
- 26:49Speaker 1: I'm yours. I had another questions, but we got to
- 26:50Speaker 1: do Rail because this man is such a legend in
- 26:52Speaker 1: the game as well as off the field. I want
- 26:54Speaker 1: to talk about his foundation, how I got inspired back
- 26:56Speaker 1: in the gap when he was out there giving hundreds,
- 26:58Speaker 1: if not thousands of pairs of shoes, because that's the
- 27:00Speaker 1: man he was when he was with Carolina Panthers. I said, hey,
- 27:03Speaker 1: if he can impact his city, why can't I do more.
- 27:05Speaker 1: It's just look at one of those things. You look out.
- 27:07Speaker 1: You see so many people do it so good, so
- 27:09Speaker 1: off that I meant to say, commendable efforts that you do.
- 27:12Speaker 1: I don't be in the Hall of fame because it's
- 27:14Speaker 1: those stories where it's like, man, they always thought he
- 27:16Speaker 1: was undersized. I love those those scrap fights. That's why
- 27:18Speaker 1: I probably looked up to John Randall back to the
- 27:20Speaker 1: de because they called him John. They used to call
- 27:22Speaker 1: him undersize. He was a menace and he still is. Yeah,
- 27:25Speaker 1: he is hous want to say golf and hit a
- 27:28Speaker 1: stoke bro? He is Larry, That's what Dolly all right?
- 27:32Speaker 1: So you know so either way, this is off the edge.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Cam Jordan as your host with my podcast. You can
