Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Scott from Anthrax and we are coming back to
- 0:03Speaker 1: one of our favorite places in the world called Australia,
- 0:07Speaker 1: and we will be there at the end of this month,
- 0:10Speaker 1: March twenty twenty six, and you can find all the
- 0:13Speaker 1: dates online and I hope to see you at the shows.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Benasty Scott, thanks for joining us that I'm.
- 0:20Speaker 3: At Oh thanks for having me.
- 0:24Speaker 2: My pleasure so as you say, andres return to Astralia
- 0:27Speaker 2: later this month for four shows, starting in Brisbane on
- 0:29Speaker 2: March of twenty third, before hitting Adelaide and Melbourne, finishing
- 0:33Speaker 2: in Sydney on March of twenty eighth. But sunny a
- 0:35Speaker 2: couple of weeks away, bro, you've packed and ready to go.
- 0:38Speaker 3: No, you know what.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Literally, we we just got home from a We just
- 0:44Speaker 1: got home from a three week tour with Megadeath and Exodus.
- 0:47Speaker 1: We were in Canada and so I'm still doing my
- 0:52Speaker 1: laundry from that and then I'll repack it and get
- 0:56Speaker 1: on the plane next week to get to Brisbane.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Sch it's your first visit is since you played Soundwaight
- 1:02Speaker 2: in twenty nineteen. So what's changed with Anthrax in those
- 1:06Speaker 2: six years?
- 1:11Speaker 1: A little bit grayer? Look, well, I mean The main
- 1:18Speaker 1: thing is we made a record. We finished an album.
- 1:20Speaker 1: It's done, it's coming out soon. There will be an
- 1:23Speaker 1: announcement soon. That's all the information that I have or
- 1:27Speaker 1: that I can give, and we're very, very very excited
- 1:30Speaker 1: about it and maybe uh people in Australia will get
- 1:35Speaker 1: to hear a little bit of it when we're down
- 1:37Speaker 1: there at the end of the month.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Speaking of albums, bright like Anpects have released eleven albums
- 1:42Speaker 2: over your career, with plenty of standout songs, mate, So
- 1:45Speaker 2: is it getting more and more difficult to come up
- 1:47Speaker 2: with the set list that appeases everybody?
- 1:52Speaker 1: Well, you can never come up with a set list
- 1:55Speaker 1: that appeases everybody. Sure that it's impossible, because you know,
- 2:02Speaker 1: there's always someone who you didn't play the song they
- 2:05Speaker 1: wanted to hear. And I know how it works because
- 2:09Speaker 1: I'm a fan of many bands, and I see many
- 2:12Speaker 1: bands in concert, and I talk to many bands who
- 2:16Speaker 1: I am friends with, and I will ask them, how
- 2:18Speaker 1: come you didn't play this song off this record and
- 2:20Speaker 1: they're like, cause you're the only one who'll know it,
- 2:22Speaker 1: And everyone else will go out and have a piss
- 2:24Speaker 1: or get a beer while we're playing that one, and
- 2:27Speaker 1: I understand how it works. So you can never please everybody,
- 2:32Speaker 1: you know, even we've done those things.
- 2:35Speaker 3: We've done tours where we put you know.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Fifty sixty or even the whole catalog you know, up
- 2:43Speaker 1: on the website and we tell people vote, go ahead,
- 2:47Speaker 1: Everyone votes for what the set list is in their city,
- 2:50Speaker 1: and we'll pick whatever the top twenty songs or whatever
- 2:53Speaker 1: it is for the set, and the top twenty songs
- 2:56Speaker 1: and the top twenty songs are the same fucking songs
- 2:59Speaker 1: that you would expect them to be.
- 3:01Speaker 3: There's no deep tracks, so you.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Know, but we get bored, so we you know, we
- 3:07Speaker 1: we try, We try and play stuff that we haven't
- 3:11Speaker 1: just been playing over and over again.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Now.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Granted, look, some songs are always going to be in
- 3:16Speaker 1: the set. It's just the way it is. Why would
- 3:18Speaker 1: I play an Anthrax set without Catton Amash in it,
- 3:21Speaker 1: or without Indians, I'd be I'd be doing a disservice
- 3:25Speaker 1: to myself and the fans if I didn't play those
- 3:28Speaker 1: songs in a live situation every fucking time I had
- 3:31Speaker 1: a chance to, you know what I mean. There are
- 3:34Speaker 1: other songs that can come in and out of a
- 3:35Speaker 1: set and that's what we try and do.
- 3:38Speaker 3: We try and placed off.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Like, you know, we haven't been to Australia in seven
- 3:42Speaker 1: years and that was a festival show we have. From
- 3:45Speaker 1: what I just heard in another interview, we haven't headlined
- 3:48Speaker 1: there since two thousand and five or something, so we
- 3:52Speaker 1: could pretty much it doesn't matter what we do. Nobody's
- 3:55Speaker 1: seen it in a really long time. So but I
- 3:59Speaker 1: I I think people will be very happy with the
- 4:02Speaker 1: headline show. It's a it's a best of all worlds situations.
- 4:08Speaker 2: You've obviously played all over the world with Anthrax smites,
- 4:10Speaker 2: Like do you find of these see parts of the
- 4:12Speaker 2: world where certain songs go dout better than others?
- 4:19Speaker 3: Uh?
- 4:20Speaker 1: I don't know if it's specific songs you know more
- 4:24Speaker 1: than they're just they're just crowds that are better than
- 4:30Speaker 1: others you know, around the planet. I wouldn't say, like
- 4:34Speaker 1: when we play Chile or Argentina, it's a specific song
- 4:39Speaker 1: that goes over better. It's just it's the It's the audience,
- 4:44Speaker 1: you know, it's the passion, it's the insanity, the aggression.
- 4:49Speaker 3: The love, it's all of that wrapped up. You know.
- 4:51Speaker 1: They're just certain places you go that have a level
- 4:55Speaker 1: of energy that is higher than other places. We were
- 4:59Speaker 1: just across Canada, and you know, you go through Canada
- 5:02Speaker 1: and man Edmonton and Calgary, you think those people will
- 5:06Speaker 1: be too cold to have hot blood running through their
- 5:08Speaker 1: veins in a mospit, but I guess it's the opposite.
- 5:11Speaker 3: They're still cold. They got to get in the moshpit
- 5:13Speaker 3: to warm up.
- 5:15Speaker 1: And but like Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, fucking London, Ontario, holy shit,
- 5:23Speaker 1: what to show?
- 5:23Speaker 3: That was Quebec City.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Melbourne for us in Australia has always been I like
- 5:29Speaker 1: playing everyone in Australia.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I don't know why.
- 5:32Speaker 1: The crowd in Melbourne always seems to just they just
- 5:36Speaker 1: got There's just a certain attitude and a certain energy
- 5:39Speaker 1: there that I don't feel anywhere else in Glasgow, Scotland,
- 5:45Speaker 1: anywhere in Spain. They're fucking crazy, Helsinki, Finland. You know,
- 5:50Speaker 1: there's just certain cities that really stand out.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Indonesia.
- 5:53Speaker 1: We played a festival there in December and that was
- 5:57Speaker 1: fucking insanity.
- 5:59Speaker 3: And probably also because they don't.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Get a lot of shows, so you know, it's still so.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I just think there's certain places where there's an energy. Look,
- 6:09Speaker 1: there's nowhere we play that a crowd is boring. You know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: the type of music we played, it's always going to
- 6:15Speaker 1: be great, it's always going to be fun. There's just
- 6:18Speaker 1: places that will double down on that, you know what
- 6:21Speaker 1: I mean. And just I mean, you notice, if you're
- 6:24Speaker 1: a metal fan, every metal band talks about South America.
- 6:28Speaker 3: It's just you know, every metal band.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Will tell you that you go to Chile and Argentina,
- 6:34Speaker 1: and like, that's that's the bar. The bar is always
- 6:38Speaker 1: set by those places. It's just like you know, some.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Things, it's just the way it is.
- 6:43Speaker 1: And that's the way it has been in the world
- 6:46Speaker 1: of metal audiences for a long time. At Chile and Argentina.
- 6:50Speaker 1: If you ever have a chance to go see a show,
- 6:53Speaker 1: go see your favorite band in one of those places.
- 6:57Speaker 2: The band has been going for forty five years. You see,
- 6:59Speaker 2: you might say, how does Funny hold up these days? Liked?
- 7:01Speaker 2: Do you have to be conscious of that when you
- 7:03Speaker 2: go out there, say you don't do your service?
- 7:08Speaker 1: Uh, this is the first time I've everady to answer
- 7:12Speaker 1: that question this way. I injured my back. We were
- 7:15Speaker 1: on the seventy thousand tons of Metal Cruise at the end.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Of January and it was a freak.
- 7:22Speaker 1: There was freak weather down off of the coast of
- 7:26Speaker 1: South Florida and out in the Bahamas where that boat
- 7:28Speaker 1: goes usually, so it couldn't cruise down to the Bahamas
- 7:32Speaker 1: because there was a bad storm. So we just kind
- 7:35Speaker 1: of stayed off the coast of Florida, like twenty thirty
- 7:38Speaker 1: miles off shore, and there was a freak cold weather
- 7:43Speaker 1: shit that happened because you know, Miami, Florida is that
- 7:46Speaker 1: time of year should be seventy seventy five degrees fahrenheit,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and it was in the thirties, like it was like
- 7:52Speaker 1: snowing weather. And we're out on this ocean and the
- 7:56Speaker 1: winds are blowing forty miles per hour, and the I
- 8:00Speaker 1: can show we do on the boat on the Saturday night,
- 8:03Speaker 1: you do it about on the big pool deck. So
- 8:05Speaker 1: there's three thousand people out outside on the boat and
- 8:08Speaker 1: you're playing outdoors and it was literally freezing fucking cold.
- 8:12Speaker 1: And we tried to get them to change the schedule
- 8:14Speaker 1: so we could play in the theater again, but they
- 8:17Speaker 1: couldn't move all the schedule around, and we didn't want
- 8:20Speaker 1: to play in the freezing cold because it obviously makes
- 8:23Speaker 1: it very difficult and for the fans. But all the
- 8:26Speaker 1: fans are out there, so we're like, well they're out there.
- 8:30Speaker 1: We were not going to cancel.
- 8:32Speaker 3: So we played. And we're very physical performers.
- 8:36Speaker 1: I move around quite a bit on stage, jumping, stomping,
- 8:39Speaker 1: I'm all over the place. And it was no way
- 8:41Speaker 1: for my muscles. Even though I warmed up, my muscles
- 8:44Speaker 1: never warmed up. And by the end of the next day,
- 8:48Speaker 1: after playing that show in the cold, my back went
- 8:51Speaker 1: out and I could I could barely walk for a
- 8:56Speaker 1: week probably, and then you know, I couldn't tie my shoes.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I couldn't fucking put pants on. I mean, it was fuck, dude.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I never had pain like that, backspasms like this. It
- 9:07Speaker 1: was insane. And I finally got home because I had
- 9:11Speaker 1: to go down to South America after that and finished
- 9:14Speaker 1: these Mister Bungle shows and I was flying these ten
- 9:16Speaker 1: hour flights and I.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Couldn't even move, dude, I couldn't I couldn't move. It
- 9:20Speaker 3: was agony.
- 9:22Speaker 1: It's been five weeks now, just did this whole run
- 9:26Speaker 1: through Canada every night on the tour, seeing massage therapists,
- 9:31Speaker 1: seeing fucking osteopaths, anything to get me through the show.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Every night, and you know, at my best on this
- 9:39Speaker 1: Canadian run, I was maybe forty percent, you know, couldn't
- 9:43Speaker 1: couldn't jump, couldn't stomp my feet, if anything. So maybe
- 9:48Speaker 1: maybe my playing was better because I you know, I
- 9:53Speaker 1: head banged harder because it didn't hurt for me to
- 9:55Speaker 1: head bang. And right now, like I at home and
- 10:00Speaker 1: I've been seeing a physical therapist and I've still got
- 10:03Speaker 1: I leave in a week to fly to Australia, and
- 10:05Speaker 1: I'm definitely better than I was a week ago, and
- 10:08Speaker 1: I'm hoping another week will go by, and so by
- 10:10Speaker 1: the time I get on stays in Brisbane, I'm hoping
- 10:13Speaker 1: I will be, you know, somewhere in the seventy seventy
- 10:17Speaker 1: five percent of what I should feel like range. And
- 10:21Speaker 1: you know, because I don't want to re injure myself obviously, Yeah,
- 10:26Speaker 1: And dude, I take care of myself. I work out regularly,
- 10:29Speaker 1: have for years, all because I want to be able
- 10:32Speaker 1: to perform at the level I want to be able
- 10:35Speaker 1: to perform at. I know what I can do, and
- 10:39Speaker 1: I know the show I want to give to a crowd.
- 10:42Speaker 1: D Snyder just you know you probably saw it. D
- 10:45Speaker 1: Snyder from Twist's sister announced a few weeks ago he
- 10:48Speaker 1: was retiring because he feels like physically he can't put
- 10:52Speaker 1: on the show he wants to put on for an audience.
- 10:55Speaker 1: And I totally understand that it was so hard some
- 10:58Speaker 1: nights in Canada as great. The audience doesn't know I'm
- 11:02Speaker 1: up there with fucking spasms running down my leg in
- 11:06Speaker 1: the middle of the show. They don't know because I'm
- 11:09Speaker 1: just up there headbanging, and if I'm making a face,
- 11:12Speaker 1: they just think it's because I'm metal, not because I'm
- 11:14Speaker 1: in pain, and they don't know, and I'm up there
- 11:19Speaker 1: doing my best, but I know, and I know, like, well,
- 11:22Speaker 1: I want to fucking and I would try and do
- 11:25Speaker 1: something and I would get a spasm and it'd be like, Nope,
- 11:27Speaker 1: can't do that, and it's really frustrating, So you know it, Definitely,
- 11:33Speaker 1: I'm hyper aware of having to take care of myself.
- 11:37Speaker 3: We all are. We all are.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Joey takes such good care of his throat, and that's
- 11:41Speaker 1: why you got a guy who was in his early
- 11:43Speaker 1: sixties who still hits every note. We don't have to
- 11:46Speaker 1: drop our tunings. The guy is in that rare air
- 11:50Speaker 1: of dudes of that age who could still sing like that,
- 11:52Speaker 1: and it's not just because of fucking magic. It's because
- 11:56Speaker 1: he takes care of himself. And that's what you have
- 11:59Speaker 1: to do, Rae.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Right now, after the Astralian runs, finish Man and you
- 12:04Speaker 2: head back Hime later on, you're gonna be hitting the
- 12:06Speaker 2: rug with Iron Maid and Mega Death. But that is
- 12:09Speaker 2: going to be a sensational run the shows.
- 12:13Speaker 1: We were a little bit jealous, I have to say,
- 12:15Speaker 1: when I saw Mega Death announced on the dates with
- 12:18Speaker 1: Maiden in Australia, but the same thing I was like,
- 12:24Speaker 1: you know, we get to go down there now and
- 12:26Speaker 1: do headline shows which we haven't done in forever. And
- 12:29Speaker 1: what I'm hoping is, of course we get to come
- 12:31Speaker 1: back sooner than later because the new album will be
- 12:34Speaker 1: out and then we could maybe come down again, which
- 12:36Speaker 1: would be fucking great if you know, we didn't have
- 12:39Speaker 1: to wait six years to come back to Australia. That
- 12:41Speaker 1: doesn't mean that doesn't mean don't come to these shows
- 12:45Speaker 1: because I have zero control over any of that.
- 12:49Speaker 3: That's just my fantasy.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I'm glad that speaking by Bridlock, I don't be contract
- 12:56Speaker 2: too much about it yet to the stood out, but
- 12:58Speaker 2: I saw I made a beating ambition Jeff yesterday obvious
- 13:01Speaker 2: you get ready for the interview and it's a fantastic film.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Brow did you appear? And I caught a few.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Times, Oh you saw the documentary or.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Right, yeah, I got gone by the interview, bright slider,
- 13:10Speaker 2: this weight. So they gave me a private screening so
- 13:11Speaker 2: I could get in it. It bring me away. What
- 13:15Speaker 2: a fantastic film.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I forgot. I did that interview so long ago. I
- 13:19Speaker 1: forgot that that was even a thing. And then I
- 13:22Speaker 1: saw the announcement last week or whenever, and I said, wait, didn't.
- 13:28Speaker 3: I do an interview. I think I did an interview
- 13:30Speaker 3: for that. It was so long ago. I did that interview.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I'm glad. I'm good. I'm glad they used stuff I
- 13:37Speaker 3: had to say.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, you haven't seen the unfinal at it yet.
- 13:40Speaker 3: I haven't seen anything.
- 13:41Speaker 2: No, it is. I got the most spectacular documentaries I've
- 13:45Speaker 2: ever seen. It is so well put together, awesome.
- 13:49Speaker 1: I got that big book they put out a few
- 13:50Speaker 1: months ago. It's the fifty years that's got. That book
- 13:54Speaker 1: is amazing. Steve Harris. Steve Harris has every single fucking
- 13:58Speaker 1: thing from day one of Iron Maiden, like his Diaries
- 14:02Speaker 1: where like made made five pounds tonight, you know, like
- 14:06Speaker 1: I mean, every every ticket, every everything. It's incredible and
- 14:11Speaker 1: they've got pictures of everything in this book.
- 14:13Speaker 3: It's it's mind blowing.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Straight. Will let you go and enjoy your David Andres
- 14:19Speaker 2: in Australia for March twenty three, starting Brisbane tickets through
- 14:22Speaker 2: Live Nation. I'll be at the Brisbane Shame my friends, so.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Right on today, see you there. Spread the word
