- 0:00Speaker 1: Salvation by faith by grace, are ye saved through faith
- 0:05Speaker 1: Ephesians to eight. All the blessing which God hath bestowed
- 0:11Speaker 1: upon man are of his muke, grace, bounty, or favor,
- 0:15Speaker 1: his free, undeserved favor, favor altogether undeserved man, having no
- 0:20Speaker 1: claim to the least of his mercies. It was free
- 0:24Speaker 1: grace that formed man of the dust of the ground,
- 0:27Speaker 1: and breathed into him a living soul, and stamped on
- 0:30Speaker 1: that soul the image of God, and put all things
- 0:33Speaker 1: under his feet. The same free grace continues to us
- 0:37Speaker 1: at this day, life and breath in all things. For
- 0:41Speaker 1: there is nothing we are, or have, or do which
- 0:45Speaker 1: can deserve the least thing at God's hand all our works. Thou, o, God,
- 0:50Speaker 1: hast wrought in us. These therefore so many more instances
- 0:54Speaker 1: of free mercy, and whatever righteousness may be found in man.
- 0:59Speaker 1: This is also the gift of God. Wherewith all then
- 1:04Speaker 1: shall a sinful man atone for any the least of
- 1:07Speaker 1: his sins with his own works. No were they ever
- 1:12Speaker 1: so many or holy. They are not his own but gods.
- 1:16Speaker 1: But indeed they are all unholy and sinful themselves, that
- 1:21Speaker 1: every one of them needs a fresh atonement. Only corrupt
- 1:24Speaker 1: fruit grows in a corrupt tree, and his heart is
- 1:28Speaker 1: altogether corrupt and abominable, being come short of the glory
- 1:33Speaker 1: of God, the glorious righteousness at first impressed on his
- 1:37Speaker 1: soul after the image of his great Creator. Therefore, having
- 1:41Speaker 1: nothing neither righteousness nor works to plead, his mouth is
- 1:45Speaker 1: utterly stopped before God. If then sinful men find favor
- 1:51Speaker 1: with God, it is grace upon grace. If God vouchsaate
- 1:56Speaker 1: still to pour fresh blessings upon us, yea the the
- 2:00Speaker 1: greatest of all blessing salvation. What can we say to
- 2:03Speaker 1: these things but thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.
- 2:08Speaker 1: And thus it is herein God commendeth his love toward us,
- 2:14Speaker 1: in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died to
- 2:18Speaker 1: save us by grace. Then are ye saved through faith?
- 2:24Speaker 1: Grace is the source, faith, the condition of salvation. Now,
- 2:30Speaker 1: though we shall not fall short of the grace of God,
- 2:34Speaker 1: it concerns us carefully to inquire what faith it is
- 2:38Speaker 1: through which we are saved? What is the salvation which
- 2:42Speaker 1: is through faith? How we may answer some objections, what
- 2:48Speaker 1: faith it is through which we are saved? And first
- 2:52Speaker 1: it is not barely the faith of a heathen. Now,
- 2:56Speaker 1: God requireth of a heathen to believe that God is,
- 3:00Speaker 1: that He is rewarder of them that diligently seek him,
- 3:03Speaker 1: and that He is to be sought by glorifying him
- 3:06Speaker 1: as God, by giving him thanks for all things, and
- 3:09Speaker 1: by a careful practice of moral virtue, of justice, mercy
- 3:13Speaker 1: and truth toward their fellow creatures. A Greek or Roman, therefore,
- 3:18Speaker 1: yea yes, Scythian or Indian, was without excuse. He did
- 3:21Speaker 1: not believe thus much the being and attributes of God,
- 3:25Speaker 1: a future state of reward and punishment, and the obligatory
- 3:29Speaker 1: nature of moral virtue. For this is barely the faith
- 3:33Speaker 1: of a heathen. Nor secondly is it the faith of
- 3:37Speaker 1: a devil, though this goes much farther than that of
- 3:40Speaker 1: a heathen. For the devil believes not only that there
- 3:43Speaker 1: is a wise and powerful God, gracious to reward and
- 3:47Speaker 1: just to punish, but also that Jesus is the Son
- 3:51Speaker 1: of God, the Christ, the savior of the world. So
- 3:54Speaker 1: we find him declaring in express terms, I know THEE
- 3:58Speaker 1: who thou art, the Holy One of God Good. Nor
- 4:01Speaker 1: can we doubt but that unhappy spirit believes all those
- 4:04Speaker 1: words which came out of the mouth of the Holy
- 4:06Speaker 1: One Yea, and whatever else was written by those holy
- 4:10Speaker 1: men of old, of two, of whom he was compelled
- 4:13Speaker 1: to give that glorious testimony. These men are the servants
- 4:16Speaker 1: the Most High God, who show unto you the way
- 4:18Speaker 1: of salvation. Thus much, then, the great enemy of God
- 4:23Speaker 1: and Man believes and trembles in believing that God was
- 4:27Speaker 1: made manifest in the flesh, that he will tread all
- 4:31Speaker 1: enemies under his feet, and that all scripture was given
- 4:35Speaker 1: by inspiration of God. Thus far goeth the faith of
- 4:38Speaker 1: a devil. Thirdly, the faith through which we are saved.
- 4:44Speaker 1: In that sense, the word which will hereafter be explained
- 4:48Speaker 1: is not barely that which the apostles themselves had while
- 4:51Speaker 1: Christ was yet upon earth, though they so believed on
- 4:55Speaker 1: him as to leave all and follow him. Although they
- 4:59Speaker 1: had then power to work miracles to heal all manner
- 5:02Speaker 1: of sickness, in all manner of disease, Yea, they had
- 5:06Speaker 1: then power and authority over all devils. And which is
- 5:10Speaker 1: beyond all this, they were sent by their Master to
- 5:13Speaker 1: preach the Kingdom of God. What faith is it, then,
- 5:18Speaker 1: through which we are saved, it may be answered first.
- 5:22Speaker 1: In general, it is faith in Christ. Christ and God
- 5:28Speaker 1: through Christ are the proper objects of it. Herein, therefore
- 5:32Speaker 1: it is sufficiently absolutely distinguished from the faith either of
- 5:36Speaker 1: ancient or modern Heathens, and from the faith of a devil.
- 5:39Speaker 1: It is fully distinguished by this. It is not barely
- 5:43Speaker 1: a speculative rational thing, a called lifeless assent, a train
- 5:47Speaker 1: of ideas in the head, but also a disposition of
- 5:51Speaker 1: the heart. For thus says the Scripture, with the heart,
- 5:57Speaker 1: man believeth unto righteousness. If thou shalt confess with thy
- 6:02Speaker 1: mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thy heart
- 6:05Speaker 1: that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt
- 6:08Speaker 1: be saved. And herein does it differ from that faith
- 6:12Speaker 1: which the apostles themselves had while our Lord was on earth,
- 6:16Speaker 1: that it acknowledges the necessity and merit of his death
- 6:20Speaker 1: and the power of his resurrection. It acknowledges his death
- 6:24Speaker 1: as the only sufficient means of redeeming man from death eternal,
- 6:28Speaker 1: and his resurrection is the restoration of us all to
- 6:31Speaker 1: life and immortality. Inasmuch as he was delivered for our
- 6:36Speaker 1: sins and rose again for our justification. Christian faith is
- 6:41Speaker 1: then not only an assent to the whole Gospel of Christ,
- 6:45Speaker 1: but also a full reliance in the blood of Christ,
- 6:49Speaker 1: a trust in the merits of His life, death and resurrection,
- 6:53Speaker 1: a recumbency upon Him as our atonement and our life
- 6:58Speaker 1: has given for us and living in us. And in
- 7:02Speaker 1: consequence hereof a closing with Him and cleaving to him,
- 7:07Speaker 1: has our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, or in one word,
- 7:13Speaker 1: our salvation. What salvation it is, which is through this
- 7:21Speaker 1: faith is the second thing to be considered, and first,
- 7:26Speaker 1: whatsoever else it imply. It is a present salvation. It
- 7:32Speaker 1: is something attainable, yes, actually attained on earth by those
- 7:36Speaker 1: who are partakers of this faith. For thus saith the
- 7:40Speaker 1: Apostle to the believers at Ephesus, and in them to
- 7:43Speaker 1: the believers of all ages. Not ye shall be, though
- 7:47Speaker 1: that also is true. But ye are saved through faith.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Ye are saved to comprise all in one word, from sin,
- 7:59Speaker 1: this is the salvation which is through faith. This is
- 8:02Speaker 1: that great salvation foretold by the Angel before God brought
- 8:06Speaker 1: his first begotten into the world. Thou shalt call his
- 8:10Speaker 1: name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Neither here nor in other parts of Holy writ is
- 8:18Speaker 1: there any limitation or restriction all His people, Or, as
- 8:23Speaker 1: it is elsewhere expressed, all that believe in Him, he
- 8:27Speaker 1: will save from all their sins, from original and actual,
- 8:32Speaker 1: past and present sin of the flesh and of the spirit.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Through faith that is in Him, they are saved both
- 8:40Speaker 1: from the guilt and from the power of it. First
- 8:44Speaker 1: from the guilt of all past sin. For whereas all
- 8:48Speaker 1: the world is guilty before God, insomuch that He should
- 8:52Speaker 1: be extreme to mark what is done amiss, there is
- 8:55Speaker 1: none that could abide it. And whereas by the law
- 8:59Speaker 1: is only the knowledge of sin, but no deliverance from it,
- 9:03Speaker 1: so that by fulfilling the deeds the law, no flesh
- 9:06Speaker 1: can be justified in His sight. Now the righteousness of God,
- 9:11Speaker 1: which is by faith of Jesus Christ, is manifested unto
- 9:15Speaker 1: all that believe. Now they are justified freely by His grace.
- 9:20Speaker 1: So the redemption that is in Jesus Christ, him God
- 9:25Speaker 1: hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in
- 9:27Speaker 1: his blood, to declare His righteousness for or by the
- 9:32Speaker 1: remission of the sins that are passed now hath Christ
- 9:36Speaker 1: taken away the curse of the law being made a
- 9:39Speaker 1: curse for us. He hath blotted out the handwriting that
- 9:42Speaker 1: was against us, taking it out of the way, nailing
- 9:45Speaker 1: it to his cross. There is therefore no condemnation now
- 9:50Speaker 1: to them which believe in Christ Jesus, and being saved
- 9:55Speaker 1: from guilt. They are saved from fear, not indeed from
- 9:59Speaker 1: the filia, fear of offending, from all servile, fear from
- 10:03Speaker 1: that fear which hath torment, from fear of punishment, from
- 10:07Speaker 1: fear of the wrath of God, whom they now no
- 10:11Speaker 1: longer regard as a severe master, but as an indulgent father.
- 10:15Speaker 1: They have not received again the spirit of bondage, but
- 10:18Speaker 1: the spirit of adoption, whereby they cry Ah a father,
- 10:23Speaker 1: the spirit itself also bearing witness with their spirits that
- 10:27Speaker 1: they are the children of God. They are also saved
- 10:31Speaker 1: from the fear, though not from the possibility of falling
- 10:35Speaker 1: away from the grace of God and coming short of
- 10:38Speaker 1: the great and precious promises. Thus have they peace with
- 10:43Speaker 1: God through our Lord Jesus Christ. They rejoice in hope
- 10:46Speaker 1: are the glory of God, and the love of God
- 10:49Speaker 1: is shed abroad in their hearts through the Holy Ghost
- 10:52Speaker 1: which is given undo them. And hereby they are persuaded,
- 10:56Speaker 1: though perhaps not at all times, nor with the same
- 10:59Speaker 1: fullness of persuasion, that neither death, nor life, nor things present,
- 11:04Speaker 1: nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any
- 11:07Speaker 1: other creature shall be able to separate them from the
- 11:10Speaker 1: love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Again,
- 11:16Speaker 1: through this faith they are saved from the power of sin,
- 11:20Speaker 1: as well as from the guilt of it. So the
- 11:22Speaker 1: Apostle declares, ye know that He was manifested to take
- 11:26Speaker 1: away our sins, and in him is no sin. Whoever
- 11:31Speaker 1: abideth in him sinneth not. Again, little children, let no
- 11:36Speaker 1: man deceive you. He that committeth sin is of the devil.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Whoever believeth is born of God. And whosoever is born
- 11:43Speaker 1: of God doth not commit sin, for his seed remaineth
- 11:47Speaker 1: in him, and he cannot sin because he is born
- 11:50Speaker 1: of God. Once More, we know that whosoever is born
- 11:54Speaker 1: of God sinneth not. But the he that is begotten
- 11:58Speaker 1: of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him. Not.
- 12:04Speaker 1: He that is by faith born of God sinneth not
- 12:07Speaker 1: by any habitual sin. For all habitual sin is sin reigning.
- 12:11Speaker 1: But sin cannot reign in anither believeth nor by any
- 12:15Speaker 1: wilful sin. For His will, while he abideth in the faith,
- 12:19Speaker 1: is utterly set against all sin, and abhorreth it as
- 12:22Speaker 1: deadly poison, nor by any sinful desire, For he continually
- 12:27Speaker 1: desireth the holy and perfect will of God, and any
- 12:31Speaker 1: tendency to any unholy desire. He, by the grace of God,
- 12:35Speaker 1: stifleth in the birth. Nor doth he sin by infirmities,
- 12:40Speaker 1: whether in act, word or thought, For his infirmities have
- 12:44Speaker 1: no concurrence of His will, and without this they are
- 12:47Speaker 1: not properly sins. Thus, he that is born of God
- 12:52Speaker 1: doth not commit sin. And though he cannot say he
- 12:56Speaker 1: hath not sinned, yet now he sinneth naught. This, then,
- 13:02Speaker 1: is the salvation, which is through faith even in the
- 13:06Speaker 1: present world, a salvation from sin and from the consequences
- 13:10Speaker 1: of sin, both often expressed in the word justification, which
- 13:15Speaker 1: taken in the largest sense, implies a deliverance from guilt
- 13:19Speaker 1: and punishment by the atonement of Christ actually applied to
- 13:23Speaker 1: the soul of the sinner. Now believing on him and
- 13:27Speaker 1: a deliverance from the power of sin through Christ formed
- 13:31Speaker 1: in his heart, so that he who is thus justified
- 13:35Speaker 1: or saved by faith is indeed born again. He is
- 13:40Speaker 1: born again of the spirit unto a new life which
- 13:44Speaker 1: is hid with Christ in God, and as a new
- 13:48Speaker 1: born baby gladly received the adolan sincere milk of the Word,
- 13:54Speaker 1: and grows thereby, going on in the might of the
- 13:58Speaker 1: Lord his God, from faith to faith, from grace to grace,
- 14:03Speaker 1: until at length he come unto a perfect man under
- 14:07Speaker 1: the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
- 14:11Speaker 1: The first usual objection to this is that to preach
- 14:15Speaker 1: salvation or justification by faith only is to preach against
- 14:20Speaker 1: holiness and good works, to which a short answer might
- 14:23Speaker 1: be given. It would be so if we spake, as
- 14:26Speaker 1: some do, of a faith which was separate from these.
- 14:29Speaker 1: But we speak of a faith which is not so,
- 14:32Speaker 1: but productive of all good works and all holiness. But
- 14:37Speaker 1: it may be of use to consider it more at large,
- 14:39Speaker 1: especially since it is no new objection, but as old
- 14:43Speaker 1: as Saint Paul's time. For even then it was asked,
- 14:46Speaker 1: do we not make void the law through faith? We
- 14:50Speaker 1: answer first all who preach not faith do MANIFESTI make
- 14:54Speaker 1: void the law, either directly and grossly by limitations and
- 14:58Speaker 1: comments that eat out all the spirit to the text,
- 15:01Speaker 1: or indirectly by not pointing out the only means whereby
- 15:05Speaker 1: it is possible to perform it. Whereas, secondly we establish
- 15:09Speaker 1: the law both by showing its full extent and spiritual meaning,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and by calling all to that living way, whereby the
- 15:18Speaker 1: righteousness of the law may be fulfilled in them. These,
- 15:23Speaker 1: while they trust in the blood of Christ alone, use
- 15:26Speaker 1: all the ordinances which she hath appointed, do all the
- 15:29Speaker 1: good works which He had before prepared, that they should
- 15:33Speaker 1: walk therein and enjoy and manifest all wholly in heavenly
- 15:37Speaker 1: tempers even the same mind that was in Christ Jesus.
- 15:42Speaker 1: But does not preaching this faith lead men into pride?
- 15:46Speaker 1: We answer accidentally. It may therefore ought every believer to
- 15:51Speaker 1: be earnestly cautioned in the words of the Great Apostle.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Because of unbelief. The first branches were broken off, And
- 15:58Speaker 1: thou standest by faith, be not high minded, but fear,
- 16:02Speaker 1: if God spared not the natural branches take heed, lest
- 16:06Speaker 1: He spare not thee Behold. Therefore, the goodness and severity
- 16:11Speaker 1: of God on them which fell severity, but towards thee goodness.
- 16:17Speaker 1: If thou continue in his goodness, otherwise thou also shalt
- 16:23Speaker 1: be cut off. And while he continues therein we he
- 16:26Speaker 1: will remember those words of Saint Paul, for seeing and
- 16:29Speaker 1: answering his very objection. Where is boasting? Then it is
- 16:33Speaker 1: excluded by what law of works? Nay, but by the
- 16:37Speaker 1: law of faith. If a man were justified by his works,
- 16:41Speaker 1: he would have whereof to glory. But there is no
- 16:44Speaker 1: glorying for him that worketh not. But believeth on him
- 16:48Speaker 1: that justifieth the ungodly to the same effect of the words,
- 16:52Speaker 1: both proceeding and following the text, God, who is rich
- 16:55Speaker 1: in mercy, even when we were dead in sins, hath
- 16:59Speaker 1: quickened us together with Christ by grace, ye are saved,
- 17:03Speaker 1: that He might show the exceeding riches of his grace
- 17:06Speaker 1: in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by
- 17:11Speaker 1: grace are ye saved through faith. And that not of yourselves,
- 17:16Speaker 1: of yourselves cometh, neither your faith nor your salvation. It
- 17:20Speaker 1: is the gift of God, the free, undeserved gift, the
- 17:24Speaker 1: faith through which ye are saved, as well as the
- 17:28Speaker 1: salvation which he of his own good pleasure, his mere favor,
- 17:32Speaker 1: and nextes thereto that ye believe is one instance of
- 17:37Speaker 1: His grace, that believing ye are saved another not of works,
- 17:42Speaker 1: lest any man should boast for all our works, all
- 17:45Speaker 1: our righteousness, which were before our believing, merited nothing of
- 17:50Speaker 1: God but condemnation, so far were they from deserving faith, which, therefore,
- 17:57Speaker 1: whenever given, is not of works. Neither is salvation of
- 18:01Speaker 1: the works we do when we believe. For it is
- 18:04Speaker 1: then God that worketh in us, and therefore that He
- 18:09Speaker 1: giveth us reward for what he himself worketh, only commendeth
- 18:13Speaker 1: the riches of his mercy, but leaveth us nothing whereof
- 18:17Speaker 1: to glory. However, may not the speaking thus of the
- 18:23Speaker 1: mercy of God as saving or justifying freely by faith
- 18:28Speaker 1: only encourage men in sin? Indeed it may and will
- 18:33Speaker 1: Many will continue in sin that grace may abound, but
- 18:37Speaker 1: their blood is upon their own head. The goodness of
- 18:41Speaker 1: God ought to lead them to repentance. And so it
- 18:44Speaker 1: will those who are sincere of heart. When they know
- 18:48Speaker 1: there is yet forgiveness with him, they will cry aloud
- 18:52Speaker 1: that He would blot out their sins. Also through faith,
- 18:55Speaker 1: which is in Jesus. And if they earnestly cry in faith,
- 19:00Speaker 1: not if they seek Him in all the means he
- 19:02Speaker 1: hath appointed. If they refuse to be comforted till he comes,
- 19:07Speaker 1: he will come and will not tarry, and he can
- 19:11Speaker 1: do much work in a short time. Many of the
- 19:14Speaker 1: examples in the acts of the Apostles of God's working
- 19:17Speaker 1: this faith in men's hearts, even like a lightning falling
- 19:20Speaker 1: from heaven. So in the same hour that Paul and
- 19:24Speaker 1: Silas begin to preach, the jailer repented, believed, and was baptized,
- 19:28Speaker 1: as were three thousand by Saint Peter on the day
- 19:31Speaker 1: of Pentecost, who all repented and believed that his first
- 19:34Speaker 1: preaching then Blessed be God. There are now many living
- 19:39Speaker 1: proofs that He is still mighty to save. Yet to
- 19:44Speaker 1: the same truth placed in another view, a quite contrary
- 19:48Speaker 1: objections made. If a man cannot be saved by all
- 19:51Speaker 1: that he can do, this will drive men to despair,
- 19:55Speaker 1: true to despair of being saved by their own works.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Their own merits are righteousness, and so it ought. For
- 20:03Speaker 1: none can trust in the merits of Christ till he
- 20:05Speaker 1: has utterly renounced his own he that goeth about to
- 20:09Speaker 1: establish his own righteousness cannot receive the righteousness of God.
- 20:14Speaker 1: The righteousness which is of faith cannot be given him,
- 20:17Speaker 1: while he trusteth in that which is of the law.
- 20:21Speaker 1: But this, it is said, is an uncomfortable doctrine. The
- 20:26Speaker 1: devil spoke like himself, that is, without either truth or shame,
- 20:30Speaker 1: when he dared to suggest to man that it is such.
- 20:34Speaker 1: It is the only comfortable one. It is very full
- 20:37Speaker 1: of comfort to all self destroyed, self condemned sinners, that
- 20:43Speaker 1: whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. That the
- 20:47Speaker 1: same Lord overall is rich unto all that call upon him.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Here is comfort high is heaven stronger than death? What
- 20:57Speaker 1: mercy for all? For the key us of public robber.
- 21:01Speaker 1: For Mary Magdalen, A COmON Harlot methinks, I hear when say,
- 21:06Speaker 1: then I even I may hope for mercy. And so
- 21:11Speaker 1: thou mayest thou afflicted one whom none hath comforted. God
- 21:17Speaker 1: will not cast out thy prayer. Nay, perhaps he may say,
- 21:21Speaker 1: the next hour be of good cheer. Thy sins are
- 21:26Speaker 1: forgiven THEE, so forgiven that they shall reign over thee.
- 21:31Speaker 1: No more, yea and that the Holy Spirit shall bear
- 21:36Speaker 1: witness with thy spirit, that thou art a child of God.
- 21:40Speaker 1: O glad tidings, tidings of great joy, which are sent
- 21:44Speaker 1: undo all people. Ho every one that thirsteth, Come ye
- 21:48Speaker 1: to the waters, Come ye, and bye, without money and
- 21:52Speaker 1: without price, whatsoever your sins be, though redlike crimson, the
- 21:58Speaker 1: more than the hairs of your head, return ye unto
- 22:02Speaker 1: the Lord, and he will have mercy upon you and
- 22:06Speaker 1: to our God, for ye will abundantly pardon. When no
- 22:11Speaker 1: more objections occur, then we are simply told that salvation
- 22:17Speaker 1: by faith only ought not to be preached as the
- 22:19Speaker 1: first doctrine, or at least not to be preached at all.
- 22:24Speaker 1: But what saith the Holy Ghost. Other foundation can no
- 22:29Speaker 1: man lay than that which is laid even Jesus Christ.
- 22:33Speaker 1: So then that whosoever believeth on Him shall be saved,
- 22:38Speaker 1: is and must be the foundation of all our preaching.
- 22:41Speaker 1: That is, must be preached first well, but not to all,
- 22:48Speaker 1: to whom, then are we not to preach? Whom? Shall
- 22:52Speaker 1: we accept the poor? Nay, they have a peculiar right
- 22:56Speaker 1: to have the Gospel preached under them, the unlearned. No
- 23:00Speaker 1: God hath revealed these things unto unlearned and ignorant men
- 23:03Speaker 1: from the beginning. The young by no means suffer these
- 23:08Speaker 1: in any wise do come unto Christ and forbid them
- 23:12Speaker 1: not the sinners. Least of all He came not to
- 23:18Speaker 1: call the righteous, but sinners the repentance. Why then, if
- 23:22Speaker 1: any we are to accept the rich, the learned, the reputable,
- 23:26Speaker 1: the moral men, and it is true they too often
- 23:31Speaker 1: accept themselves from hearing. Yet we must speak the words
- 23:36Speaker 1: of our Lord. For thus the tenor of our commission runs,
- 23:40Speaker 1: Go and preach the Gospel to every creature. If any
- 23:44Speaker 1: man rested, or any part of it to his destruction,
- 23:48Speaker 1: he must bear his own burden. But still, as the
- 23:52Speaker 1: Lord liveth whatsoever, the Lord saith unto us that we
- 23:57Speaker 1: will speak at this time. More especially will we speak
- 24:03Speaker 1: that by grace are ye save through faith? Because never
- 24:07Speaker 1: was the maintaining this doctrine more seasonable than it is
- 24:11Speaker 1: at this day. Nothing but this can effectually prevent the
- 24:15Speaker 1: increase the Romish delusion among us. It is endless to
- 24:19Speaker 1: attack one by one all the errors of that church.
- 24:22Speaker 1: But salvation by faith strikes at the route, and all
- 24:26Speaker 1: fall at once. Where this is established, it was this doctrine,
- 24:30Speaker 1: which our Church justly calls the strong rock and foundation
- 24:34Speaker 1: of the Christian religion, that first drove popoury out of
- 24:37Speaker 1: these kingdoms. And it is this alone can keep it out.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Nothing but this can give a check to that immorality
- 24:46Speaker 1: which hath overspread. The land is a flood. Can you
- 24:49Speaker 1: empty the great deep drop by drop? Then you may
- 24:53Speaker 1: reform us by dissuases from particular vices. But let the
- 24:59Speaker 1: righteousness which is of God by faith be brought in,
- 25:03Speaker 1: and so shall its proud waves be stayed. Nothing but
- 25:07Speaker 1: this can stop the mouths of those who glory in
- 25:10Speaker 1: their shame and openly deny the Lord that bought them.
- 25:14Speaker 1: They can talk as sublimely of the Law as he
- 25:17Speaker 1: that hath it written by God in his heart. To
- 25:19Speaker 1: hear them speak on this head might incline when to
- 25:22Speaker 1: think they were not far from the Kingdom of God.
- 25:26Speaker 1: But take them out the Law and to the Gospel.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Begin with the righteousness of faith with Christ the end
- 25:33Speaker 1: of the Law, to every one that believeth and those
- 25:36Speaker 1: who but now appeared almost, if not altogether, Christians stand
- 25:41Speaker 1: confess the sons of perdition as far from life and salvation.
- 25:46Speaker 1: God be merciful unto them as the depth of hell
- 25:49Speaker 1: from the height of heaven. For this reason the adversary
- 25:55Speaker 1: so rageous whenever salvation by faith is declared to the world.
- 25:59Speaker 1: For this reason did he stir up earth and hell
- 26:02Speaker 1: to destroy those who first preached it. And for the
- 26:06Speaker 1: same reason, knowing that faith alone could overturn the foundations
- 26:11Speaker 1: of his kingdom, did he call forth all his forces
- 26:14Speaker 1: and employ all his arts of lies and calumny to
- 26:17Speaker 1: affright Martin Luther from reviving it. Nor can we wonder thereat,
- 26:22Speaker 1: For as that man of God observes, how would it
- 26:26Speaker 1: enrage a proud strong man armed to be stopped and
- 26:30Speaker 1: said it nought by a little child coming against him
- 26:33Speaker 1: with a reed in his hand, especially when he knew
- 26:36Speaker 1: that little child would surely overthrow him and shred him
- 26:40Speaker 1: under foot. He even so, Lord Jesus, Thus hath thigh
- 26:45Speaker 1: strength been ever made perfect in weakness. Go forth in thou,
- 26:50Speaker 1: little child that believest in him, and his right hand
- 26:54Speaker 1: shall teach thee terrible things. Though thou art helpless and
- 26:59Speaker 1: weak as an inn infant of days. The strong man
- 27:02Speaker 1: shall not be able to stand before thee. Thou shalt
- 27:06Speaker 1: prevail over him, and subdue him, and overthrow him, and
- 27:10Speaker 1: trample him under thy feet. Thou shalt march on un
- 27:13Speaker 1: of the Great Captain of thy salvation, conquering, and too
- 27:17Speaker 1: conquer until all thine enemies are destroyed, and death is
- 27:21Speaker 1: swallowed up in victory. Now, thanks be to God which
- 27:26Speaker 1: giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom,
- 27:31Speaker 1: with the Father and the Holy Ghost, be blessing and
- 27:34Speaker 1: glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and
- 27:39Speaker 1: might forever and ever Amen. End of Section one.
