Well, hi everyone. This is Jerry Doggett along with Vin Scully. Here we are at Busch Stadium in St. Louis for the game between the Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals.

• 1:06
It's a rainy day in St. Louis. The weatherman has come along now with the forecast that it might stop raining for a while.
• 1:14
And we might be able to squeeze in the ballgame between the showers. It has been raining off and on all night and all morning.
• 1:21
In fact, the most recent shower about 45 minutes ago here in St. Louis. But now the ground crew at work getting the field in shape.
• 1:29
Astro turf here in St. Louis. It has been sponged off. The infield dirt was covered by the tarp.
• 1:35
It is now being dressed up and we should be underway with the ballgame in a very few moments.
• 1:39
It's a big day in the life of young Doug Rau out of Columbus, Texas. And he came to the Dodgers by way of Albuquerque and a couple of good seasons in the minors.
• 1:48
For Doug he is making his first major league start. Although he pitched earlier this year for the Dodgers just about a month ago in fact at Cooperstown, New York in the exhibition game against the New York Yankees.
• 2:00
In that game Rau pitched three strong innings, developed a blister on his pitching hand and had to come out after the Yankees got to him.
• 2:07
But Rau went back to Albuquerque, finished up in a blaze of glory and he is with us now and will start today's ballgame. Young Doug Rau out of Columbus, Texas.
• 2:16
We'll have the starting lineups and other pregame notes for you after this message.
• 2:20
If Farmer John would apply a pennant over his place, naturally it would say the east and most in quality and the west and most in flavor.
• 2:26
Farmer John likes me to remind you folks now and then that this is not a slogan but a fact.
• 2:31
It's an expression of Farmer John's way of doing things differently and why his products are different. Now you take Farmer John bacon.
• 2:38
Every ounce is eastern corn fed pork, the finest and the freshest because Farmer John brings the pork out here live, not frozen or in cold storage like most other packers do.
• 2:48
Then the meat is dressed fresh, cured into bacon here in the west. So Farmer John bacon is just as fresh and the same highest quality as bacon in the eastern corn belt, hence the eastern most in quality.
• 3:00
Then Farmer John smokes his bacon a secret old time western way over native western wood to give it a marvelous western flavor, which adds up to the western most in flavor.
• 3:10
So put it all together and you have words with genuine meaning. Farmer John bacon, the east and most in quality and believe me, the western most in flavor.
• 3:18
Here at St. Louis, the ground crew putting the finishing touches now to getting the ballpark ready for the game. Skies overhead, dreary gray and it looks like it could rain any moment.
• 3:32
But we are hoping of course that the weatherman's forecast is correct. We'll have a couple of hours gap in here so that we are able to get the ball game in.
• 3:39
If you're ready now, we'll give you the landers for the ball game today for the Dodgers leading off playing second base Lee Lacey. Lacey at second.
• 3:51
Bill Buckner will be in right field. Buckner.
• 3:56
Willie Davis in center field. Davis batting third.
• 4:03
Wes Parker will be at first base batting fourth.
• 4:08
Willie Crawford in left field batting fifth. Crawford.
• 4:14
Bobby Valentine is the third baseman. Valentine.
• 4:19
Bill Russell will be at shortstop. Russell.
• 4:25
Steve Yeager will do the catching. Yeager.
• 4:29
Yeager catching and Doug Rowe to do the pitching.
• 4:33
They were teammates of course at Albuquerque earlier in the year before Yeager was called up and Rowe is called up before the Coast League goes into its playoff season which begins next week.
• 4:45
So the left hander Doug Rowe wears number 43 warming up in the bullpen down in left field.
• 4:50
The batting order for the Cardinals Lou Brock in left field.
• 4:56
  Ted Sizemore at second base.
• 5:01
  Bernie Carbo in right field.
• 5:08
Joe Torre will play third base in today's game. Torre.
• 5:14
The first baseman will be Ted Simmons who normally is the catcher for the Cardinals. So Simmons will play first base today.
• 5:23
Melendez will be in center field. Luis Melendez.
• 5:31
The catcher will be Skip Jutzi. J-U-T-Z Jutzi was the starting catcher in the second game last night.
• 5:42
So Jutzi today will be the catcher again and they move Ted Simmons to first base. That's an experiment the Cardinals are going to try for a few ball games here during September.
• 5:52
The shortstop will be Dwayne Anderson. Anderson at short.
• 5:59
And the pitcher is Don Durham. Durham a right hander who lost to the Dodgers in Los Angeles. He has 0-1 against them lifetime.
• 6:09
And 2-6 against the league this year with an earned run average of 3-8-0. Durham hard throwing right hander has shown that he has pretty good stuff.
• 6:18
The umpires will come out now. We'll have the exchange of batting cards as Joe Torre brings the card up for the Cardinals.
• 6:24
And Danny Ozark has the batting order for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
• 6:29
Some pregame ceremonies are being concluded. And we're going to have the playing of our national anthem.
• 6:41
  fondly noodles
• 7:10
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
• 7:28
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
• 7:40
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
• 7:52
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?
• 8:22
The umpires for the game will be Mel Steiner at home plate, Williams at first, Stalo at second, and Sudol will be at third.
• 8:35
Our pregame ceremonies have been concluded now, and if you will, with us, we'll keep your fingers crossed.
• 8:42
We understand the weather in California is bright, sunny, a beautiful day, but here is anything but.
• 8:47
Jury overcast and the threat of rain is with us, and of course the ball club's hoping that they can get this one in.
• 8:54
A postponement today would really create problems.
• 8:57
It would necessitate a doubleheader tomorrow, and then the ball clubs would have to go into Labor Day for the regularly scheduled doubleheaders.
• 9:06
The Dodgers against the Reds in Los Angeles Monday at 5 o'clock.
• 9:09
The Cardinals play Montreal, a doubleheader here.
• 9:12
Friends, here's a thrill waiting for some Dodger fan at fan appreciation night, September 27th.
• 9:17
He'll have a chance to reach into a fishbowl and come up with one of five keys.
• 9:21
He will then approach a line of trailers, mobile homes, and campers, all of which will be seen later at the 20th Annual Trailer Coach Association's Mobile Home and Recreational Vehicle Show.
• 9:31
Whichever vehicle the key fits becomes his.
• 9:34
They range in value from $5,000 to $10,000, so he'll be a nervous picker.
• 9:40
You'll find out there a 20-foot Champion Home from Champion Builders, Inc., an 18-foot Perfie Couple fifth-wheel trailer from Perfie Camper,
• 9:50
a 28-foot Silver Streak Continental from the Silver Streak Trailer Company, an 18-foot Tioga Motorhome by Fleetwood,
• 9:59
and a 20-foot Road Ranger travel trailer manufactured by Kipp Manufacturing Company.
• 10:06
How would you like to fit the key into one of those?
• 10:08
Well, call it your own. Maybe you will. Fan appreciation night, September 27th.
• 10:14
Waiting for the Cardinals to take the field here on the scoreboard.
• 10:19
Not too much underway as yet. There's a lot of nighttime action, and now the Cardinals take the field.
• 10:25
San Diego has come up with three runs in the second inning and lead Chicago 3-2, Caldwell against Milk Papas.
• 10:32
Twyniter will find Philadelphia at Atlanta. New York will be at Houston for a night game. Strom going against Wilson.
• 10:39
And the Astros have won six in a row. San Francisco will be at Pittsburgh, McDowell, and Browse. Montreal at Cincinnati, the Reds have won 11 out of 14.
• 10:49
And the Astros, with their winning streak, haven't been able to make hardly a dent in the lead of Cincinnati.
• 10:55
Torres against Nolan in the game at Cincinnati tonight. Kansas City at Boston, 2-0 Boston leads in the second inning.
• 11:01
Chicago at New York, Bradley against Klein, no score, one inning.
• 11:05
Cleveland, Minnesota, no score in the second inning. Dunning and Woodson.
• 11:09
Later on, Detroit at Oakland, Lollich against Blue. That ought to be a good one. Mickey Lollich and Vita Blue.
• 11:16
Milwaukee at Texas tonight, and Baltimore will be at Cleveland, at California tonight, to play the Angels at the Big A.
• 11:22
It will be Palmer 18-6 and May 6-10. So that's everything on the scoreboard here in St. Louis. We're all set.
• 11:30
Time to play ball. The Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals. And now for the play-by-play. Here's Vince Gulley. Vinny?
• 11:36
Thank you, Jerry. Hi, everybody. And a very pleasant good day to you, or ever you may be.
• 11:39
It's been gray and rainy and everything else. The lights are being turned on in the ballpark.
• 11:43
But thanks to the AstroTurf, we'll be able to get this game underway.
• 11:47
It is the one thing about modern design, although they can't totally defeat the weather, as they can do, let's say, in the Astrodome in Houston.
• 11:55
Nevertheless, this game probably could not have been played in the old ballpark, nor could it have been played in any ballpark where they had grass.
• 12:03
It just rained too hard and too long. But here, outside of the fact that the carpet is a little damp, why, there's no problem, and they'll get it underway.
• 12:12
Lee Lacey, followed by Bill Buckner and then Willie Davis here in the first inning.
• 12:17
Lacey hitting 261, so his average has drifted down a bit. Lee's big problem is just not to get discouraged.
• 12:24
He's kind of a youngster. When things go badly, he begins to doubt himself. So he needs a lot of pep talk.
• 12:30
Right-handed Don Durham's first pitch is high and inside. The lead ball one, 1-0.
• 12:35
The Dodgers in the tenth game on this road trip have won five and lost four, thanks to splitting the double header last night. They got above 500.
• 12:43
Here's the 1-0 pitch to Lee Lacey. Durham delivers fastball for a strike in the count, 1-1.
• 12:50
Dodgers have won six out of ten from the Cardinals. They took four out of six at Dodger Stadium. They've split the four here.
• 12:56
And the finale is tomorrow. Here's the 1-1 pitch on the way to Lacey. Fastball fouled away. He was late, didn't get around on it.
• 13:04
One and two, the count. Tomorrow's game, remember, will be on Channel 9. Channel 9.
• 13:12
The Dodgers and the Cardinals, Bill Singer and Reggie Cleveland warm up at 10.55.
• 13:18
Breaking ball is looped to right field. Sizemore going out and this one's going to fall for a base hit in front of Carbo.
• 13:25
To Lee Lacey, another into right field for a base hit and the batter will be Bill Buckner.
• 13:35
Bill Buckner, the right fielder, hitting 3.17. On deck, Willie Davis.
• 13:43
Adding second for the Dodgers, number 22.
• 13:48
  So do we. Yeah, yeah.
• 13:53
Bill Buckner, the batter. Lee Lacey at first, held on by Ted Simmons.
• 13:59
So the three top catchers in the National League have played other positions. There goes Lacey.
• 14:05
The pitch swung on and missed. Judges throw. They get him.
• 14:09
At a weight on Dick Stelow, the second base on fire, got to the bag and slipped and started to fall.
• 14:15
And he couldn't give a sign until he had regained his balance. But Lacey has thrown out. It's a tough track.
• 14:23
Play going 2-6 from Skip Jutsey to Dwayne Anderson. 0-1 to count to Bill Buckner.
• 14:33
With nobody out, the Dodgers are actually playing hit and run and Buckner just failed to make contact.
• 14:39
Lacey is shot down. Durham can go back to a windup and the strike one fastball is popped in the air foul to the left of the plate.
• 14:45
Jutsey comes back. Skip is there to make the catch. 2-down.
• 14:53
Ted Simmons, who is a super young catcher for the Cardinals, is playing first base today.
• 14:58
That gives Skip Jutsey a chance to catch and it gets Torrey back at third where he does well.
• 15:03
Johnny Bench, of course, has played third base in left field as well as catching.
• 15:07
And the Pirates are thinking about putting Manny Sanguian in left field and catching Milt Mayowild.
• 15:12
And they, without a doubt, are the top three catchers in the league and about as good as there would be anywhere.
• 15:18
Here's Willie Davis. He takes outside. Ball one. 1-0.
• 15:24
Davis batting 287. He's been, I would say, very consistent at that mark. He's been right around there for months and months now.
• 15:31
The 1-0 pitch to Willie. Durham's pitch is low and away. Ball two.
• 15:35
Mel Steiner is the plate umpire. Billy Williams at first. Dick Stelow at second.
• 15:40
And the crew chief, Ed Soudal, is on the line back at third. Jim Gilliam coaching at first. Danny Ozark at third.
• 15:46
2-0 pitch to Davis. Fastball. Line drive right at Durham.
• 15:50
Durham caught that thing right between his legs, just about thigh high.
• 15:56
Caught it and then just dropped it and walked away.
• 16:00
Willie Davis, a bullet right back at Durham. No runs, one hit.
• 16:04
And at the end of half an inning, Dodger's nothing. Cardinal's coming up.
• 16:07
Say, if you're said to buy a new car, that's great. The showroom cars will be looking good.
• 16:11
But watch it. You'd better know that a lot of display cars are looking good because they're loaded with expensive options.
• 16:17
Not so with Toyotas. A whole lot of nice appointments on a Toyota are standard.
• 16:22
Things that could run you about 250 bucks someplace else.
• 16:25
Things like front disc brakes, reclining bucket seats, tinted windows, bumper guards, nylon carpeting, white walls.
• 16:32
Toyota calls all these things standard equipment.
• 16:36
Now some other cars call them about 250 bucks worth of options.
• 16:40
That's based on a comparison of manufacturers' suggested retail prices from published sources.
• 16:46
So be sure to watch it. Be careful.
• 16:48
When new cars are out to dazzle you, remember their fancy extras can have a very fancy extra price.
• 16:55
And while supply lasts, pick up a free 100-page Olympic guidebook at participating Toyota dealers.
• 17:01
  Licensed drivers only, please.
• 17:04
Bottom of the first inning, the Dodgers turned away empty-handed, we'll set them defensively. On the mound, young Doug Rau, R-A-U, making his big league debut.
• 17:17
Behind the plate, Steve Yeager. The infield, Wes Parker at first, Lee Lacey at second.
• 17:23
The shortstop, Bill Russell, the third baseman, Bobby Valentine.
• 17:27
The outfield, Willie Crawford is in left. Willie Davis is in center. And Bill Buckner is in right.
• 17:33
Lou Brock, Ted Sizemore, and Bernie Carbo in that order.
• 17:39
Lou Brock, the left fielder, left-hand batter, hitting 304.
• 17:45
Doug Rau, Douglas James Rau by name, born in Columbus, Texas.
• 17:52
  He'll be 24 in December. He's left-handed all the way, 6 to 180 pounds.
• 17:59
The graduate of Texas A&M, he got a bachelor of science degree in finance and economics.
• 18:05
The pitch to Lou Brock is high and away, ball one, 1-0.
• 18:09
Boy, he was a brilliant student. He had a scale, 3.8 on a scale of 4, over his four years in college.
• 18:16
They've got a head out there on the mound. Doug Rau, the 1-0 pitch to Brock, is waved out and missed 1-1.
• 18:22
Whether they have an arm out there remains to be seen.
• 18:25
  At Albuquerque, Rau was 14-3.
• 18:30
Rau comes back 1-1, and the curveball over for a strike, 1-2.
• 18:41
Rau pounding his spikes on the rubber.
• 18:45
Doug lifts his head, looks in to get a sign from Yeager.
• 18:48
And the 1-2 pitch to Brock is a ground ball to Russell. Bill is up with that.
• 18:52
Rau goes across to Farquhar for the out one-away, and will pause for station identification.
• 18:56
This is the Los Angeles Dodgers, Radio Network.
• 18:59
  This is KTAR Phoenix.
• 19:01
Don't ever let a happy moment pass you by all through the day.
• 19:10
Here's Ted Sizemore, the ex-Dodgers, hitting 400 against Los Angeles pitching.
• 19:16
The Sizemore, second baseman with Bernie Carbo on deck.
• 19:20
Rau is disposed of his first man, Lou Brock.
• 19:22
Now the pitch to Sizemore, strike on the outside corner, 0-1.
• 19:33
Rau comes back to the plate, 0-1. Fastball jumped in there, strike two.
• 19:37
In July of 1970, Doug Rau was pitching for Bakersfield in the California League.
• 19:44
In a nine-inning game, he struck out 21.
• 19:47
The strike two pitch is a bounce-it-down to Russell. Bill, near the bag, picks it up and gets him.
• 19:52
So two away on ground balls to Bill Russell.
• 19:54
And Nevada will be Bernie Carbo, and I think Sizemore might have broken his bat.
• 20:01
So Rau has only pitched a little while, 70-71 and 72, and here he is in the big leagues.
• 20:14
Doug looks down to get a sign from Yeager. Carbo, left-hand batter, swings at a fastball and doesn't get it and they count 0-1.
• 20:21
So now it remains to be seen. What will he do in the big leagues?
• 20:25
He's gotten his first two batters. Doug Rau.
• 20:30
Yeager, Wigswag assign a two-out to him. The strike one pitch, off speed, and it stayed inside. One ball and one strike.
• 20:37
Concluding game of the series tomorrow, Bilsinger, 5-13, against Reggie Cleveland, 13-11.
• 20:45
Now the 1-1 pitch is a breaking ball, low and away ball two, 2-1.
• 20:56
Two down in the first inning, no score. Gray, Day, he can ring this one out.
• 21:01
Here's the 2-1 pitch to Bernie Carbo, fastball inside, ball three, three and one.
• 21:08
So no blue skies here in St. Louis, although we understand the weather in Los Angeles is just fine.
• 21:14
We hope you have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.
• 21:17
If the weather in Southern California is fine, it is one of the few places in the United States where the weather is fine.
• 21:25
Here's the 3-1 pitch. Carbo pops it up, and Bill Russell, who handled two ground balls, will now handle a pop fly.
• 21:31
Dancing around makes the catch, and so Bill gets them all.
• 21:34
And Doug Rau has one inning of his major league career in the books. At the end of the inning, no score.
• 21:40
Oly, oly, o. Oly, oly, o. Oly, oly, o. Oly, oly, o. It's the water, oh, that makes it oly beer. It's the water and the lot.
• 22:00
It's the special care that makes olymphia. Such a special beer, that's olymphia. It's the way we age, our oly, oly beer. It's the water and the lot.
• 22:19
It's the house and drink, the best that we can buy. It's the exercise, that's just one reason why. The time to make it great, to make olymphia. It's the water and the lot.
• 22:38
  Oly, oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, o. Oly, oly, o.
• 22:43
Second inning, no score in the ballgame, and the Dodgers will have Wes Parker, Willie Crawford, and Bobby Valentine against right-handed Don Durham.
• 22:56
Wes Parker checks into the ballgame at 290. Durham ready, delivers, and Mrs. Hybe, ball one, 1-0.
• 23:05
Durham comes back to the plate, 1-0, fastball to Parker, in there for a strike, and the count, 1-1.
• 23:16
Simmons and Sizemore, Anderson and Torry, the infield, Brock, Melendez and Carbo in the outfield, Jutsey behind the plate, and Durham delivers, and the fastball over for a strike, 1-2.
• 23:29
Wes, two different hitters, boy, he's really night and day, he's hitting 258 left-handed, 338 right-handed.
• 23:44
Now the 1-2 pitch, Parker takes high, ball two, 2-2.
• 23:51
Of his four home runs, he's hit two from each side of the plate, but of his 49 RBIs, 30 of them has come as a left-handed batter, with that 258 average.
• 24:02
  He takes ball three, 3-2.
• 24:09
Now Durham's 3-2 pitch to Parker is lifted into left side of field, Brock cruising over, signaling that he has it, and he does, one away.
• 24:21
Say you're a sure winner with your family when you serve them Farmer John, fresh pork and pork products.
• 24:28
Here's Willie Crawford, Willie checks in at 236.
• 24:32
He has seven home runs, 21 runs batted in.
• 24:35
We're in the second inning, no score, and we're thankful to get this one in.
• 24:39
Durham into the windup, and the right-hander deals high, ball one.
• 24:42
The weatherman, she'll call the turn.
• 24:44
He said there would be a three to four hour gap between rains.
• 24:51
And it's just at the right time to play the game.
• 24:54
The fastball to Crawford is outside, ball two, 2-0.
• 24:58
As long as the rain holds up, we'll get this one in.
• 25:04
Here's the 2-0 pitch to Willie Crawford, change outside, ball three, 3-0.
• 25:15
Don Durham, a quick worker, the 3-0 pitch, little high, ball four, so Crawford a one-out walk, and the batter will be Bobby Valentine.
• 25:23
Al Santorini, who pitched and pitched well, but lost a tough one last night, he pitched very quickly.
• 25:30
And it could very well be that a young pitching staff is influenced by Bob Gibson.
• 25:38
Durham's straddling the rubber, waiting for Valentine to get squared away.
• 25:41
It takes a little bit of doing when you get on the dirt, because the dirt is wet and loose, not too much traction.
• 25:49
Durham will look over at Willie Crawford, the right-hander ready and delivers, and the fastball to strike, on one.
• 25:56
Jim Russo is talking about the Dodgers. He's a Baltimore scout who lives out in this area and handles the Midwest for Baltimore.
• 26:04
And he watches the Dodgers particularly. He was saying without a doubt the Dodgers are the fastest team in baseball.
• 26:10
It's not even close with anybody else. Ballon takes high and inside, one-on-one.
• 26:14
For speed is an important part of the game. It's not everything, but boy, it's a tough commodity to come by.
• 26:22
The Dodgers have the speed, they have the pitching, they are starting to have the defense now.
• 26:28
And of course their big sock man was Frank Robinson who just got all banged up. The pitch to Valentine is strike one and two.
• 26:37
One away, second inning, no score.
• 26:42
  Bill Russell on deck.
• 26:56
One and two to Bobby Valentine. Durham at the bell, Crawford a pretty good lead.
• 27:00
Their pitch to Valentine is low, ball two, two and two.
• 27:04
The Cardinals are 17 and a half back of the Pirates. The Dodgers a dozen back of Cincinnati.
• 27:10
And of course remember Monday 5 p.m. a Twilight night doubleheader with the Reds.
• 27:14
The auto gates and the turnstiles open at three.
• 27:17
That Labor Day doubleheader will be the beginning of the four game series with Cincinnati.
• 27:21
Valentine drives it to right center and lands in front of Carbo for a hit.
• 27:25
Crawford has to stop at second because Carbo made it close.
• 27:29
So first and second with one out and Bill Russell the batter.
• 27:32
Valentine who was sitting 269 will get up into the 270s now with that base hit.
• 27:37
And here's Russell. Bill hitting 287.
• 27:48
Don Durham looks in to skip Jutsey to get the sign. Russell waiting.
• 27:53
Bill with four home runs, 29 runs batted in.
• 27:58
And the first pitch sails over Russell's head to the backstop and everybody moves up 90 feet.
• 28:04
Crawford goes to third. Valentine to second and boy he really uncorked the wild pitch.
• 28:09
About a foot over Russell's head and it hit the backstop on the fly.
• 28:14
So the Dodgers now have a chance to pick up a couple.
• 28:22
One and all to count. Now I think they're going to walk Russell. Yep that wild pitch took the bat right out of his hand.
• 28:27
So Russell will get the intentional walk and Yeager and Rao will be coming up.
• 28:32
And for Steve Yeager a chance to pick up an RBI. He has three.
• 28:36
In a moment the bases will be loaded.
• 28:39
  Meg Yeager two RBIs.
• 28:43
A couple of wide ones to Bill Russell to load him up.
• 28:48
So Russell trots to first. Valentine at second. Crawford at third.
• 28:52
So they have running speed even though they have a slow track.
• 28:55
And catches Steve Yeager coming up.
• 28:58
He has two hits and 34 at bats. Two RBIs.
• 29:04
Yeager started the second game last night. He was hit by a pitch, grounded out and fly to left.
• 29:10
We'll see what he does now against Don Durham.
• 29:13
Right hander ready and the pitch to Yeager. Breaking ball fouled away outside of third in the count of one one.
• 29:22
  Yeager and Rao on deck.
• 29:37
Durham into the wind up. The right hander delivers. Breaking ball is whacked to left field.
• 29:41
Brock racing over and he can't get it. And boy what a lift that's going to give Yeager.
• 29:45
The ball bouncing away from Brock. Crawford scores. Valentine scores.
• 29:50
Russell scores on a triple by Steve Yeager.
• 29:54
And that is really going to take a load off the young catcher's shoulders.
• 30:00
So Steve Yeager who is really pressing. He had two RBIs since being called up.
• 30:05
The Eagles home three here in the second inning and the Dodgers lead three to nothing.
• 30:20
The Doug Rao coming up with a runner at third and the Dodgers leading three to nothing.
• 30:25
Rao making his debut at the bat. Left hand hitter with one out.
• 30:29
Yeager at third out of a stretch goes Durham and the pitch to Doug a strike. 0-1 they play the infield out.
• 30:36
Three nothing Dodgers. As Yeager triples home the bases loaded.
• 30:42
Now the strike one pitch to Rao is taken strike two. Doug hits as he pitches left handed all the way.
• 30:53
No balls and two strikes to count.
• 31:00
Lowell Palmer begins to throw in the bullpen as Rao fouls it away.
• 31:05
Here in the inning Crawford walked and Valentine singled him to second.
• 31:09
The key was a wild pitch. So that caused Durham to walk Russell intentionally to load the bases.
• 31:16
And then Yeager tripled home everybody. And here is Rao 0-2 to Doug.
• 31:21
Durham out of a stretch and delivers and the fastball is inside ball one.
• 31:25
Lowell Palmer throwing back of right handed Don Durham here in the second inning.
• 31:34
Now the one-two pitch to Doug. Fastball is just outside. So he's inside outside in the count two and two.
• 31:48
Durham at the belt and the two-two pitch fastball low ball three.
• 31:53
One thing Rao in his big league debut he's not getting any lollipops up there.
• 31:58
Pretty good fastballs by Durham but he's been missing and he's gone all the way.
• 32:07
Right hand already in the three-two pitch Rao slices it into left center field racing over as Melendez.
• 32:13
He can't get it and it's going to go to the wall. So Yeager scores. Rao is going to go for three.
• 32:20
And in his big league debut he triples drives in a run in the Dodgers lead 4-0. How do you do?
• 32:36
So Steve Yeager getting a hero's welcome in the Dodgers dugout.
• 32:41
All players know what it's like to press and be dying for a hit and that's what Yeager got a big one.
• 32:47
Bonnie Schultz going out to the mound. Back to back triples by the youngsters Yeager and Rao.
• 32:53
And the Dodgers lead 4-0. And we'll see if they're bringing a quick look.
• 32:58
Schultz looks down to the pen where Palmer is throwing.
• 33:02
And Durham who is 2-6 with the lead he has completed 1-7 and is going to be 1-8. He's gone.
• 33:13
So Durham here in the second inning gives up two walks a single and back to back triples by Yeager and Rao.
• 33:22
And out he goes. 4-0 Dodgers here in the second inning. We got some time and we'll spend it with Jerry.
• 33:28
Friends plan a trip this winter. Let the Dodgers help you make it.

• 34:33
We had a report earlier that San Diego scored 3. We rubbed that out.
• 34:37
It is still 2-0 Chicago, Caldwell and Papas.
• 34:40
Double header schedule, Philadelphia, Atlanta. New York at Houston tonight, San Francisco, Pittsburgh tonight, Montreal at Cincinnati tonight.
• 34:47
The American League, Boston 5 and Kansas City nothing at the end of 3.
• 34:51
Chicago 1, New York 1 at the third inning.
• 34:54
And Cleveland, Minnesota no score at the end of 2.
• 34:57
Later on Detroit at Oakland. Milwaukee will be at Texas tonight and Baltimore at California tonight.
• 35:03
All right, back to play. Here's Vince.
• 35:05
All right, Jerry Lee Lacey coming up with Doug Rau at third base. The Dodgers have dispatched Durham.
• 35:11
It's 4-0 Dodgers and Lacey trying to make it 5 and get Rau home.
• 35:15
There's only one out. That was the first batter.
• 35:17
Parker flied to left. Crawford walk, Valentine's single, the wild pitch, intentional walk to Russell.
• 35:23
Pitch is fouled away by Lacey. Off to the right and a count on one.
• 35:31
So Yeager and Rau have tripled back to back for a big inning. 0-1 to Lacey.
• 35:38
Palmer at the belt and delivers and it's in the dirt. A nice save by Jutzi in the count one and one.
• 35:45
Lacey's average drifting to 2-61, but he's single to right in the first inning. So he's one for one.
• 35:53
Palmer comes back and a fastball is waved at him. Good location that time.
• 35:57
Knee high outside part of the plate and Lee was guessing inside. He seemed to give right away and then tried to reach for it.
• 36:04
1-2 to second baseman Lee Lacey. Palmer delivers, fastball blew him down swinging so there's a big out.
• 36:11
Rau is still at third and with two down, Bill Buckner coming up.
• 36:21
Bill Buckner fouled out in the first inning hitting 3-16. Doug Rau at third base, four runs over for the Dodgers.
• 36:39
Palmer's pitch is high and away, ball one.
• 36:52
Now the 1-0 pitch on the way. Buckner fouls it back. 1-1. Dodgers four, Cardinals nothing in the second inning.
• 37:10
Low Palmer, 0-1 with the lead. Right hander into the windup and the 1-1 pitch to Buckner is outside. Ball two, 2-1.
• 37:18
Palmer is strictly a relief man. It's his 14th assignment.
• 37:28
Now the 2-1 pitch. Buckner hits the ground ball down to shortstop. Anderson kicks it, recovers it on a bounce, throws and nips him at first base.
• 37:37
So Buckner is out 6-3 and the Dodgers leave Rau at third but they get four runs, three hits and at the end of an inning and a half, Dodgers four, Cardinals nothing.
• 37:47
I'm sure you've noticed a fantastic boom in recreational vehicles in the last few years.
• 37:51
More and more Americans are taking their vacations in campers and trailers.
• 37:55
If you're one of them, Union 76 has some important information for you to remember about the tires on your camper or trailer.
• 38:01
Correct inflation pressure for the load you're carrying is the most important rule for tire safety and mileage.
• 38:07
Never drive or tow any recreational vehicle on underinflated tires. That causes fast, uneven tread wear and premature tire failure.
• 38:15
Don't overinflate your tires either to compensate for additional loads.
• 38:19
Check the markings on the tires for the correct load range and inflation pressure.
• 38:24
And check the maximum load limit recommended for your trailer or camper by the manufacturer.
• 38:29
It's easy to unwittingly overload a recreational vehicle and that's just as dangerous as underinflating your tires.
• 38:35
Union 76 wants you to have a safe and enjoyable vacation and they're glad to help.
• 38:39
So while you're traveling, remember the folks with the spirit. The spirit of 76 lives at Union Oil.
• 38:46

• 39:23
  Okay, here's Vinnie.
• 39:24
Hi, Jerry. Doug Rouse. Not only gotten a base hit, it was a triple.
• 39:28
He picked up an RBI. He's leading four to nothing and he's ready to work in the second inning.
• 39:35
He'll be getting Tori, Simmons, and Melendez.
• 39:45
Tori hitting 290 has 11 home runs and 70 runs batted in.
• 39:55
Bobby Valentine talking to Doug Rouse for a moment.
• 40:00
So here's Tori starting it off. Joe is a long way from last year. He's about 73 points from last year.
• 40:06
As the most valuable player, he hit 363. This year, 290.
• 40:13
It's the old story in baseball. What have you done for me lately?
• 40:17
Rouse ready, delivers fastball, fouled away, or first base out of play, and the count on one.
• 40:31
Rouse comes back with a change and it's popped up on the right side and fouled around is Wes Parker,
• 40:36
and waiting and makes the catch for the out. So the change up, fool Tori, won away, and Ted Simmons the batter.
• 40:46
Simmons playing first base today is hitting 301, and he is a most consistent player.
• 40:53
  Has a switch hitter, 303 left-handed, 297 right-handed.
• 40:59
They talk about consistency. The Corolla 1600 is value. A sturdy car at a low price and lavishly equipped.
• 41:05
Test price is at your nearby Toyota dealer. Simmons drives it up the alley. In left center, it'll be an extra base hit for Ted.
• 41:12
Chasing it is Willie Davis. Simmons stumbling, rounding first and goes into second standing.
• 41:17
The infield is very treacherous. He goes to the rain, they put a lot of topsoil and sand out there.
• 41:23
And boy, there are some really bad spots. Dick Stella, the second base on fire, almost fell on his ear.
• 41:29
And the same for Simmons, rounding first.
• 41:34
  The batter is Luis Melendez.
• 41:42
Here is Luis Melendez, right-hand batter. Melendez hitting 253. Simmons at second with one out, four-nothing Dodgers.
• 41:50
Rau's fastball is fouled to the screen on one.
• 41:54
Walter Olson was first impressed with Doug Rau's double, not first impressed, he had seen him in the spring.
• 41:59
But he liked what he saw in the Cooperstown game with the Yankees. Rau pitched well until he developed a bluster.
• 42:05
So now he's pitching for keeps. Strike one pitch on the way. Turned it over but missed low and account one ball and one strike.
• 42:14
The Cardinals against left-handers are four games under 500. They're 18 and 22 against left-handers.
• 42:23
Fastball is fouled away and the count one and two.
• 42:39
One and two the count to Luis Melendez.
• 42:44
Dodgers four, Cardinals nothing. We're in the bottom of the second inning.
• 42:49
The game started late but the big thing is it started.
• 42:53
Now the one-two pitch on the way is a high chopper wide a third to Valentine who juggles close to first in time.
• 43:00
I think Bobby was taking a quick peek at Ted Simmons at second base and he almost dropped that high bouncer.
• 43:05
Two out and Skip Jutzi coming up.
• 43:11
Jutzi made his big league debut last night.
• 43:15
But it was a modest debut to say the least. He struck out three times and threw a ball into center field for an error.
• 43:23
But one game does not make a season nor a career and Jutzi is right back in there today.
• 43:29
Rau at the belt and Doug delivers high and outside. Ball one.
• 43:33
Four-nothing Dodgers second inning. Two down. Ted Simmons at second base.
• 43:42
Here's the one-oh pitch on the way. Fastball fouled away. Off to the right. Second deck in the count one and one.
• 43:50
Here in St. Louis the dimensions symmetrical park as all the new ones are.
• 43:54
Three-thirty down the lines. Three-eighty-six up the alleys. Four-fourteen to center.
• 44:05
Now the pitch. Low and inside. Ball two. Two and one.
• 44:09
The top five hitters as they flash them on the board now. You find two of the five in the National League are Dodgers.
• 44:17
Billy Williams leading with Cesar Cedeno. They're even at three-forty.
• 44:21
Manny Moda three-twenty-seven. Ralph Gahr three-eighteen and Bill Buckner three-seventeen at the start of the game.
• 44:39
Let's go to the third. Four-nothing Dodgers and for more Play-By-Play here's Jerry Doggett.
• 44:43
All right Vinnie and here's Willie Davis about to line out to the pitcher. Durham is first time up.
• 44:47
Durham is not with us now. Palmer into the lineup and the pitch swung a half swing and a fly ball to center field.
• 44:52
Malenda's moving up. He's under it now. Makes the catch and it's one away.
• 44:56
So a checked swing by Davis results in a fly ball to center.
• 45:00
Wes Parker coming up now. Fly to the left. Wes hitting two-ninety with four homers and forty-nine runs batted in.
• 45:10
One away. The Dodgers scored four times in the second. The big blows. Triples by Yeager with the bases loaded.
• 45:15
And a triple by Doug Rowe to drive in Yeager. First pitch comes inside and low. One ball and no strikes.
• 45:23
One-oh the count. Ball game is in the third inning here in St. Louis.
• 45:29
Now the pitch. Fast ball low and inside. Ball two. Two balls. No strikes.
• 45:37
A two-nothing count. Alright Parker waits. Palmer to the windup and his fast ball is away. Ball free. Three balls. No strikes.
• 45:53
Three on Oto West. Low Palmer in his fourteenth game with the Cardinals. He's worked just twenty innings and allowed fifteen hits.
• 46:01
Throws ball four too low. Parker on with a walk.
• 46:04
And the defense is KTAR Phoenix.
• 46:14
Willie Crawford is back now. Willie walked his first time up. Scored the first run of the game.
• 46:18
The Dodgers lead the Cardinals four to nothing as we play on the top of the third inning.
• 46:23
Parker away from first. And Palmer's pitch a half swing and a bouncing ball towards second.
• 46:28
Goes back to second for the out on Parker. Throw the first not in time. So a check swing by Crawford results in a force play.
• 46:36
Sizemore to Anderson. There are two outs now with Bobby Valentine coming up.
• 46:49
Valentine singled in the right center field. And then he came home to score on the triple by Yeager.
• 47:04
Okay the stretch and the look and the throw to first base not in time.
• 47:16
Now the pitch on the way. Swan have popped up down the left field line going for shortstop Anderson.
• 47:21
Third baseman Torrey. Anderson calls now and makes the catch. Side retired.
• 47:27
So the Dodgers gone in the third inning. No runs. No hits and the man left from the score at the end of two and a half innings to play.
• 47:33
  Cardinals nothing. Dodgers four.
• 47:37
Time now for another Toyota tale. Getting started.
• 47:50
I'm all Roman. Jack is all business. I even bargain for the wedding license. And I guess he's right.
• 47:57
It'll be tough getting started. But we've been saving up. So far we've got about six dollars.
• 48:04
Jack said we'll be driving a Toyota. Doesn't cost much to drive and cost less to buy.
• 48:09
The night we decided to get married. You know what he whispered in my ear.
• 48:13
Toyota has the lowest price model of the ten best selling economy car.
• 48:30
See the lowest price model of the ten best selling economy cars at your nearby Toyota dealer.
• 48:39
I had done to the last half of the third inning with Anderson Palmer and Brock do up now against Doug Rowe.
• 48:45
Rowe making his major league debut here today against the Cardinals. He already has chipped in with a run on a triple drove in a run.
• 48:53
Doug Rowe long lanky Texan left hander on the mound. The name Rowe sticks in our mind because it came to us first from Del Crandall who has been a manager in the Dodger farm system.
• 49:06
In one of those spring training bull sessions at Burial Beach we kind of talked with Del and asked him about some of the young talent that he had seen the year before in the minor leagues and asked him about a pitcher who might make it to the big leagues shortly.
• 49:19
He said write it down. Doug Rowe will be there in a year or two. Well here's Doug Rowe and that was just about a year or so.
• 49:25
Rowe's on the mound doing the work here now and trying to make an impression in his debut.
• 49:31
Kerrball is in a little low one ball no strikes a 14 and three record this year at Albuquerque as he helped the Albuquerque club win the division championship.
• 49:43
Fastball grounded a third Valentine right there up with it and his play across is in time and we have one out. So one up and one down and Palmer the pitcher coming on.
• 49:53
Rowe in his career is in his third year he began in 1970 two clubs Albuquerque rather Bakersfield and Spokane in 1971 Albuquerque and Spokane and this year Albuquerque and Los Angeles.
• 50:08
And his combined minor league record 38 wins and 15 losses and a combined earned run average of two point eight two.
• 50:16
So he has had a good minor league background first pitch outside ball one one on the count Palmer waiting Rob delivers a fastball swung on and missed one and one to sum it up on Rob.
• 50:30
They feel they say that he is sneaky fast has a pretty good stuff has good control. He walks 76 this year and 172 innings is a curve inside ball two two and one his first year out he walked only 18 batters and 113 innings.
• 50:48
Next year 29 batters and 117 innings pitch on the way missed outside ball free so he's gone to three and one count was pitching opponent Lowe Palmer.
• 50:59
  Doug Rao R.A.U.
• 51:05
Three and one count the Palmer with Brock on deck. Here's the pitch fly ball to right field Buckner fades back a few steps slips and falls makes the catch as he fell his face as he turned he slipped on the Astro turf and fell down and made a spectacular catcher the ball would have hit him right in the nose.
• 51:24
The Palmer out on a good play by Buckner floating over toward the line and as he backed up a step his feet went out from under him it is very wet in the outfield and the players were the rubber cleats on the shoes and they slipped and gave way with Billy but he's still able to make the play.
• 51:43
Well quite a play by Billy Buckner has a success story. Union 76 now sells over a million gallons of low lead regular 76 every day. Here is Lou Brock at bat he grounded out his first time up the only hit against Rao Brown single a double rather by Simmons Brock grounded out his first time up.
• 52:01
Here's a pitch first strike going one.
• 52:07
So Doug Rao in his third year professional baseball has arrived on the Major League scene fastball is high ball one one on one one ball one strike with two outs.
• 52:22
Third inning Dodgers lead four to nothing.
• 52:27
Now the wind up and fetch Brock takes low inside ball two and it's two and one.
• 52:35
The Dodgers of course are well stocked with left hand pitchers now they have downing hosting and John and the starting rotation Brewer Rickard and Paranaski in the bullpen is a fly ball in the center field Davis right distracts weights under it.
• 52:52
Well he pops the glove makes the catch in the side retired one two three.
• 52:57
So they're all gone in the third and the score at the end of free innings of play Dodgers four and the Cardinals nothing. It's great being away from the grind for a few days.
• 53:06
That's why every weekend is something to celebrate. Make this weekend coming up something really special. The Dodgers are playing on television this weekend.
• 53:15
Why not have a few friends over to watch the game. Of course nothing goes better with a good game of baseball on TV and a good cold glass of Olympia beer.
• 53:24
So make sure you have plenty stacked up in the refrigerator. A guy can really work up a thirst watching those Dodgers hustle on a hot day.
• 53:32
So it takes a beer like only to handle a real baseball first only has the light beer flavor and mellow taste that really matches the greatness of the Dodgers.
• 53:43
So enjoy the Dodgers on TV this weekend but let your thirst enjoy the game too with a tall glass of only good and cold. It's a good idea when you're watching TV to take only along Olympia beer.
• 53:58
I was set to go into the fourth inning more play here spinning. All right Jerry. Bill Russell will start it off with a Dodger leading four to nothing.
• 54:11
It's Russell Yeager and Rao right hander all Palmer's fastball over for a strike on one no balls in one strike.
• 54:31
Palmer bounces a curve ball in the dirt and it goes to the screen and the count one ball and one strike. Russell was walked intentionally in the second inning. The wild pitch necessitated that.
• 54:43
And then Yeager tripled home three and in round his debut at the bat triple home Yeager one one pitch to Russell fastball filed away off to the right out of play.
• 54:55
One and two one to pitch to Bill Russell is inside and it got him hit by the fastball and it got him on the left arm and Russell tried not to rub but that thing really hurt and he got about 30 feet from home plate and he suddenly bent over and grabbed his left arm.
• 55:24
Now straightens up and walks to first. Bill was complaining about a tender area in the left arm.
• 55:34
Not too long ago and boy he got it only this time it's above the elbow.
• 55:40
  Time out for the moment.
• 55:42
  I'm right on the bicep.
• 55:51
Here is Steve Yeager he tripled in the second inning.
• 55:56
Russell hops off the bag Palmer look over there. Low ready and delivers and Yeager bunting foul and bunch it right into the cardinal dugout.
• 56:05
He was around to bun that fastball took off up and in. He just did get out of the way while bunting it at the same time.
• 56:15
For nothing Dodgers were in the fourth inning.
• 56:20
Torrey plays up a step inside the bag at third. Palmer at the belt looks at Russell Yeager's bunting again and fouls it and a count on to how soon and how quickly forget.
• 56:32
Steve Yeager comes up with a base is loaded in the second inning and triples home three and a mob of in a dugout. Second time up the bunting.
• 56:43
Oh and to see what they do with the egg is now a Tory goes back to a normal depth.
• 56:49
Palmer a look over at Russell low already and delivers breaking ball is waved out in Miss strike three.
• 56:58
Olympia beer happy to send it to you on this.
• 57:02
See I was going to say Fourth of July weekend but it's Labor Day it's just so hard to believe that it's come up Labor Day.
• 57:10
  September the second.
• 57:15
And now we're going to see how fastball is going to go to Rowe.
• 57:25
Rowe tripled in his big league debut left hand batter takes the fastball high ball one one and all on deck Lee Lacey.
• 57:36
Russell hops off the bag held on by Simmons a throw over there not in time. Dodgers did all the scoring in the second inning Yeager tripled home three and then route tripled home Yeager.
• 57:49
Here's the one oh pitch Russell fell and I think he was going to go on the pitch and account one and one.
• 57:56
There is a damp area about eight feet or so off the bag at first base.
• 58:02
That's where Simmons almost fell on his head when he doubled there's a similar area just in front and around the bag at second where Dick Stella almost fell down.
• 58:12
No one one pitch high and outside ball to two and one.
• 58:15
Well we saw Bill Buckner come in on his landing gear and right field to handle that fly ball.
• 58:21
  So it's treacherous going.
• 58:24
But boy have you saw the rain that came pouring down here just marvel at the idea they're playing it all at 2 1 pitch low and inside ball three.
• 58:32
The Rao has to count his way three and one.
• 58:41
Montreal Cincinnati Philadelphia Atlanta Twilight night New York Houston tonight San Francisco Pittsburgh tonight.
• 58:47
One other game going in the National League the Cubs leading San Diego four to nothing in the sixth inning.
• 58:54
Boston five Kansas City one top of the fifth Yankees two to one over the Chicago White Sox in the top of the six.
• 59:01
The pitcher out way outside ball for his three to Cleveland leading Minnesota in the top of the fifth and Milwaukee Texas Baltimore California Detroit Oakland tonight.
• 59:14
Lee Lacey coming up with runners at first and second and one out Rick Fokker's loosening up in the Cardinal bullpen.
• 59:28
So a hit batter and a walk.
• 59:31
The Rao has come up to the plate twice in the big leagues.
• 59:33
He has a triple a run batted in on a walk.
• 59:36
And now here's Lacey Lacey single the right and struck out one for two.
• 59:46
Breaking ball is high to Lacey ball one and Jutzi asking for time goes out to talk to Lowell Palmer.
• 1:00:03
Now Joe Torrey comes in from third to talk to Palmer so time out one ball no strikes to count.
• 1:00:13
Fourth inning four runs four hits for the Dodgers no runs one hit for the Cardinals that was a double by Ted Simmons.
• 1:00:22
Palmer's fastball in there for a strike Lacey one and one Rick Fokker's the left hander throwing back a Palmer one and one Russell a big lead at second base is known to throw to the Palmer still turns and bluffs a throw.
• 1:00:43
Russell at second row at first one out Bill taking a good lead to one one pitch Lacey in the dirt smothered nicely by Jutzi and out to get at his Palmer as Jutzi pushed it out in front of the plate.
• 1:00:55
Two and one Don Durham started he only went an inning in the third.
• 1:01:02
He was charged with the four runs and the four hits.
• 1:01:12
Palmer right foot on the rubber another look at Russell and the pitch to Lacey a fastball fouled away and it's two and two.
• 1:01:27
One out in the fourth Dodgers for Cardinals nothing third game of the four game series. Bill Singer and Reggie Cleveland tomorrow warm up time 1055 game time 1115 to fastball as a bare handed attempt by Palmer he slows it down Anderson throws to first and gets him.
• 1:01:45
Nice try by Palmer in bare handing the ball he slowed it down and Anderson got his man so the play went one six three instead of being a base hit up the middle.
• 1:01:56
  That brings up Bill Buckner.
• 1:02:01
Buckner is fouled out and grounded out over to
• 1:02:19
pitch to Buckner is driven to center field Melendez comes up and makes the catch.
• 1:02:26
The buckner hits the ball hard but at the center fielder he goes over three the Dodgers lead to and at the end of three and a half innings Dodgers for Cardinals nothing.
• 1:02:34
There's at least one tire dealer who thinks the only good tire sale is one that offers a tire you'd probably buy even if it wasn't on sale and that tire dealer is your union 76 dealer.
• 1:02:46
The Dodgers are now participating union 76 stations in the Los Angeles area are showing their spirit by having a sale on their best selling tire the union 76 three star it's called the best seller tire sale by two three star tires and save between 10 and 20 dollars.
• 1:03:04

• 1:04:09
out of gate and the turnstiles open at three hope to see a Dodger Stadium Labor Day evening five o'clock for players many. All right Jerry Ted Sizemore Bernie Carbo and Joe Tory will test Doug Rao the second time around Sizemore who came into the game with a 400 batting average against the Dodgers grounded a short in his first trip against Rao.
• 1:04:32
Bill Singer and Reggie Cleveland tomorrow warm up 1055 game time 1115 and remember the telecast will be on Channel 9.
• 1:04:43
And of course like all Dodger games on KFI and the Dodger radio network.
• 1:04:49
Sizemore 0 for 1 Rao fussing with the laces on his right shoes so time out for the moment.
• 1:04:55
In fact he has a tongue depressor and he is scraping dirt out to clean up the spikes to allow him to get some traction.
• 1:05:05
  Now we're ready.
• 1:05:12
The Cardinals play a Labor Day double header and their double header will start at 11 a.m.
• 1:05:26
Your size more now the right hand hitting second baseman Rao's pitches popped in the air around the plate.
• 1:05:31
Yeager throws his helmet away and in foul ground makes the catch.
• 1:05:37
The Sizemore fouls out one away and Bernie Carbo the batter.
• 1:05:44
Carbo popped a short in the first inning 0 for 1.
• 1:05:58
Left hand to Rao's curveball over for a strike on one.
• 1:06:01
There's a fellow in the press box named Joe Cunningham who played first base in the outfield of the Cardinals not too many years ago.
• 1:06:06
You might remember Joe but every time I see Joe or hear his name or read of him I always think he's one of the few men I know who was just about hit by a tornado and got away cheaply enough.
• 1:06:20
The strike one pitch on the way low to Carbo 1 and 1.
• 1:06:24
Joe was living in an apartment house a small apartment house in St. Louis while a member of the Cardinals and he was at home reading his Bible.
• 1:06:34
Then the house was hit by a tornado and just demolished.
• 1:06:38
Pitched to Carbo low ball to 2 and 1.
• 1:06:41
But Cunningham just walked through it okay.
• 1:06:47
Boy they have them those twisters in and around St. Louis.
• 1:06:52
The 2-1 pitch Carbo takes a strike 2 and 2.
• 1:06:57
One out bottom of the fourth the Dodgers leading 4 to nothing they hit the Cardinals with a twister in the second inning when they piled up 4.
• 1:07:07
Left hand to Rao delivers missing outside ball 3, 3 and 2.
• 1:07:22
Doug Rao making his major league debut the 3-2 pitch to Bernie Carbo is swung on and missed strike 3.
• 1:07:28
That's the first strike out for Rao he is not an overpowering type pitcher.
• 1:07:33
He's got two out in the fourth inning and Joe Torrey coming up.
• 1:07:42
Torrey fouled out to Wes Parker he looked like he leaned over the plate to go after a change up and popped it up.
• 1:07:52
Rao into the wind up Doug delivers fastball grounded to Lacey Lee up with it jams on the brakes going to his right throws him out.
• 1:07:59
And so for Doug Rao he's just sailing along nicely that's eight in a row.
• 1:08:04
And he has faced only 13 batters in four innings one above the minimum that would be the double by Ted Simmons.
• 1:08:10
And at the end of four Dodgers 4 Cardinals nothing.
• 1:08:13
Farmer John is a great one for predicting oh not pen and predicting but other kinds.
• 1:08:18
And his latest prediction strictly guesswork he admits is that there will be more people staying home over this Labor Day than on the freeways.
• 1:08:26
Ask him why and he'll say well people are getting smarter.
• 1:08:29
And then he'll add the smartest of all are the ones that not only stay home but have a supply of his Farmer John wieners to make staying home more enjoyable.
• 1:08:38
Well now maybe Farmer John's slightly biased but his all meat wieners do have a wild and wonderful Western flavor all their own.
• 1:08:46
You see Farmer John smokes his wieners over native Western wood until a good Western flavor reaches from tip to tip.
• 1:08:53
Farmer John uses only natural herbs and spices to no artificial seasoning.
• 1:08:57
And he makes his wieners with only finest freshest eastern corn fed pork and fresh lean juicy homegrown beef.
• 1:09:03
So if you're a stay at home or Labor Day enjoy the weekend more with Farmer John wieners regular size and the 10 inch extra longs called Dodger Dogs.
• 1:09:12
To the fifth inning with the Dodgers leading the Cardinals 4 to nothing.
• 1:09:19
Four runs four hits. The Cardinals no runs one hit.
• 1:09:23
The Dodgers will have Willie Davis, Wes Parker and Willie Crawford.
• 1:09:28
The Willie Davis at the plate.
• 1:09:37
Davis takes a strike in the count 0 and 1.
• 1:09:47
0 and 1 to Willie Davis.
• 1:09:59
Right hand to Farmer's fastball line drive just fair inside the right field foul line and down into the Cardinal bullpen.
• 1:10:06
And the ball didn't come out from under the bench and Willie just keeps on going.
• 1:10:10
And by the time they get it back in he's a third with a triple.
• 1:10:15
So Willie Davis drives one into the Cardinal bullpen.
• 1:10:20
I think the Cardinals are going to maintain that the ball was unretrievable and therefore it should be a ground rule double.
• 1:10:28
Joe Torrey the captain is appealing to Billy Williams.
• 1:10:32
Billy Williams wants to talk to Mel Steiner the plate umpire.
• 1:10:39
And now Red Chains comes out and they will send Willie Davis back to second base.
• 1:10:45
Evidently the ball went underneath the bench and ruled a ground rule double.
• 1:10:53
So Willie Davis goes back to second with his double he's one for three.
• 1:10:59
So the Dodgers have five hits two triples and a double.
• 1:11:06
With nobody out West Park of the batter West fly to left and walk he's 0 for 1.
• 1:11:18
Lowell Palmer at the bell checks Davis works in the dirt ball one.
• 1:11:25
Single game tomorrow to conclude the series in the road trip and the Dodgers come home tomorrow evening.
• 1:11:31
For the Twilight night doubleheader with Cincinnati remember that starts at five with the auto gates and the turnstiles opening at three.
• 1:11:39
Parker takes a strike in the count one and one and then night games Tuesday and Wednesday nights with Cincinnati.
• 1:11:46
Then after the Reds take a hike Atlanta will be in for two on Thursday and Friday and Houston Saturday Sunday and Monday night.
• 1:11:55
Parker pops one up at shortstop Wayne Anderson is calling waiting makes the catch one away.
• 1:12:04
The battle will be Willie Crawford.
• 1:12:21
Willie Crawford has walked and hit into a force play.
• 1:12:29
Farmer at the belt and the pitch to Crawford filed away on one.
• 1:12:39
  Two notes about home runs.
• 1:12:41
First of all the Cardinal pitching staff has not allowed a home run in their last 76 innings.
• 1:12:48
Although they've allowed a couple of triples today.
• 1:12:50
Here's the strike one pitch high and away one and one.
• 1:12:53
The other home run note the Dodgers have hit at least one home run in every park in the league except here in St. Louis.
• 1:12:59
  They've not hit one.
• 1:13:07
The one one pitch to Crawford high ball to two and one.
• 1:13:10
So that'll be a little added interest tomorrow because the fellow who leads the Cardinals and home runs allowed is Reggie Cleveland.
• 1:13:16
He's allowed 18 so it would figure that if the Dodgers are going to hit one here at all it might be against Cleveland.
• 1:13:22
The two one pitch Crawford filed it away to and to.
• 1:13:32
One out in the fifth inning Dodgers leading the Cardinals for another course for the Dodgers to draw blanks here is not news.
• 1:13:38
They had only one here last year.
• 1:13:40
Jimmy Lefevre hit it to and to the counter Willie Crawford.
• 1:13:46
Palmer at the bell to look at Davis fastball to Crawford just outside he started to swing and held up three and two to Willie Bobby Valentine on deck.
• 1:13:57
Dodgers dispatched Don Durham in the second inning when they touched him before a Palmer has been in there since.
• 1:14:03
And Doug Roussell I just one hit in four innings in his major league debut pitch in the dirt for ball for.
• 1:14:09
The Crawford the first Davis at second Valentine to battle with one out in the fifth inning.
• 1:14:16
The Dodgers have received four walks.
• 1:14:21
  In fact five walks.
• 1:14:26
  One intentionally.
• 1:14:33
Davis at second Crawford at first one away Bobby Valentine singled and filed out.
• 1:14:43
Palmer heaves a sigh now low already right hander delivers fastball filed away on one.
• 1:15:04
  Palmer in relief of Durham.
• 1:15:06
Four nothing Dodgers fifth inning one away on one account of Valentine Bill Russell on deck.
• 1:15:13
Next one is high and inside one ball one strike.
• 1:15:23
Jutsey in a crouch behind the plate wigwags a couple of signs out but Valentine not ready and backs out.
• 1:15:28
The time call by Mel Steiner.
• 1:15:32
And now already Palmer at the bell to look at Willie Davis one one pitch to Valentine high and inside with a fastball up around the chin ball to two and one to Bobby.
• 1:15:52
Now the two one pitch to Valentine fastball line drive at Anderson over to second base for the double play.
• 1:16:00
The six four double play Valentine hit the ball right on the button but right at Dwayne Anderson no runs one hit one left at the end of four and a half Dodgers four Cardinals nothing.

Let's pause for station identification this the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
• 1:17:22
The moment that you buy off in the day KTR Phoenix.
• 1:17:31
Bottom of the fifth inning Dodgers for Cardinals nothing Doug Rowe in his major league debut has allowed one hit that was a double in the second inning.
• 1:17:51
The double was to Ted Simmons and Ted is coming up to the plate now to start it off line drive up the alley and left center back in the second inning.
• 1:18:00
Rowan to the wind up and delivers and the first one is outside ball one.
• 1:18:06
Brows retired eight in a row since the double.
• 1:18:10
Now the one old pitch on the way fastball for a strike at the knees one and one.
• 1:18:18
Dodgers for Cardinals nothing bottom of the fifth inning third game of the four game series the 11th meeting of the year between the two clubs a change is low ball to Dodgers have an edge of one six out of 10.
• 1:18:31
This is the 10th game of a road trip and their five and four on the trip.
• 1:18:38
The two one pitch fastball laced to right Buckner comes in and over and makes the catch for the out.
• 1:18:44
The Simmons lines to right one away Luis Melendez the center fielder coming up.
• 1:18:51
Say you know your home team enjoys the finest when you bring home the bacon and other park products from Farmer John Melendez grounded the third in the second inning Luis awful one.
• 1:19:07
And even with the bag at third the pitch to Melendez popped in the air. It's West Parker calling near first base and Justin fair ground making the catch for the out.
• 1:19:19
  But quickly.
• 1:19:20
Brows gotten two more outs in the fifth inning retired 10 in a row.
• 1:19:25
How downing finished up last night's game by retiring 16 in a row.
• 1:19:35
Here is Skip Jutsey rookie catcher up from the American Association and he laces one in the left center base said Robert over but he can't cut it off.
• 1:19:43
It goes to the wall and in the second base goes Jutsey and that will be his first big league hit.
• 1:19:49
Skip struck out three times last night and now double so he's one for five.
• 1:19:57
One of the reasons we have so many extra base hits today the Dodgers have two triples and a double and the Cardinals have two doubles.
• 1:20:03
It is not just the fact that the ball hits the Astro.
• 1:20:06
The outfielders are running very gingerly because the Astro is wet and slippery.
• 1:20:11
So the combination means lots of base hits.
• 1:20:14
We've had seven hits in the game and four of them for extra bases.
• 1:20:22
  Here is Dwayne Anderson.
• 1:20:24
Anderson was sitting five hundred against the Dodgers nine for eighteen.
• 1:20:29
He grounded out in the third inning.
• 1:20:37
The pitch to Dwayne is taken for a strike.
• 1:20:41
Jerry McNerney comes in from the Cardinal bullpen and he's now in the dugout.
• 1:20:46
So perhaps McNerney will be the hitter for a law Palmer.
• 1:20:51
The next one a strike and the count on two.
• 1:20:59
  No balls and two strikes.
• 1:21:07
Rau left foot on the rubber checking McNerney is out on deck.
• 1:21:12
The pitch to Anderson inside ball one Rau is starting to walk up the mound.
• 1:21:16
  He thought he had one.
• 1:21:18
One and two to Anderson he hit sharply but right at Bobby Valentine in the third inning.
• 1:21:23
Four nothing Dodgers with two out bottom of the fifth.
• 1:21:25
It's a lot cooler in St. Louis now.
• 1:21:28
Here's the one two pitch to Anderson that's popped foul off first and out of play.
• 1:21:37
I was listening to a weatherman from New York, no from Washington D.C.
• 1:21:42
giving a national weather report for this Labor Day weekend.
• 1:21:48
I mean it's terrible everywhere except in the far west.
• 1:21:56
Maybe it's just as well maybe it'll keep a lot of people home and cut down the accident rate.
• 1:22:00
  Maybe.
• 1:22:03
Here's the one two pitch Anderson drives it to right Buckner going back it's over his head and he backhands the ball.
• 1:22:09
Good play by Bill Buckner on that line drive.
• 1:22:13
No runs one hit a man left at second base and at the end of five Dodgers four Cardinals nothing.
• 1:22:20
America is one of the few countries in the world that has a special day to honor the working man.
• 1:22:26
  Labor Day.
• 1:22:27
It's your day off because you earned it.
• 1:22:30
Well can you think of anything that goes better with a day off than a tall cool glass of Olympia beer?
• 1:22:36
So naturally you want to plan ahead and make sure there's plenty of ole on hand this weekend.
• 1:22:41
Just in case some of your friends drop by for a cold glass of their favorite beer.
• 1:22:46
Olympia beer is brewed in Tumwater Washington from naturally pure artesian water.
• 1:22:51
Pop open an ole pour it and watch that glass work up a sweat.
• 1:22:56
Here's a beer taste that gets right to a man's thirst.
• 1:22:59
A refreshingly light beer flavor that happens glass after glass after glass.
• 1:23:04
Because Olympia uses only choice barley malt and select hops.
• 1:23:08
And they age their beer long enough to make it taste just right.
• 1:23:11
It's a light beer for the man who works hard for the man who earns his day off.
• 1:23:15
So pour yourself an ole and enjoy the good taste of a good beer.

• 1:23:57
Alright, let's go to the action. Here's Ben.
• 1:23:59
It's 4-0 Dodgers in the sixth inning. They brought the little baseball buggy out of the Cardinal bullpen and saluted Superman.
• 1:24:06
A man got out dressed in a Superman regalia from his home on the daily planet. Clark Kent arrived here as Superman.
• 1:24:16
Reminds us Chris Canazaro wears a Superman t-shirt underneath his Dodger uniform.
• 1:24:23
In fact, you know, an enterprising writer on a rainy day, one of those things, could write a kind of interesting funny story about some of the t-shirts worn by players.
• 1:24:34
Russell bows it back on one. Canazaro wears a Superman t-shirt.
• 1:24:41
There's a chocolate drink called Yahoo and Yogi Berra has that and a lot of players have Yahoo t-shirts that they wear.
• 1:24:49
Here's the strike one pitch to Russell that's popped out off to the right out of play.
• 1:24:54
Bill Grabarcovitz has a Houston Oilers t-shirt.
• 1:25:00
Oh, Steve Garvey has a lot of stuff from Michigan State still left over from his days on campus.
• 1:25:07
Here's a strike two pitch to Russell and he has to get underneath the high inside fastball one and two.
• 1:25:16
  Now there are some dandies.
• 1:25:19
Then of course, there's the superstitious player who's on some kind of a streak who refuses to wear anything but the same uniform.
• 1:25:26
Fastball bow back. Of course, he gets a little ripe after a while. He winds himself in the corner.
• 1:25:33
We've seen guys on a long hitting streak and they're going to wear the same t-shirt. You don't want a whole road trip or something.
• 1:25:39
One and two to the count of Bill Russell.
• 1:25:42
Palmer delivers and a ground ball wide at third. Spirit nicely by Torrey and Joe throws him out. Good play.
• 1:25:49
Bill Russell losing a hit. One away and the batter will be Steve Yeager.
• 1:26:00
Yeager has tripled and struck out. He's one for two.
• 1:26:12
Lowell Palmer delivers in the dirt ball one, one and all.
• 1:26:17
It's all about enterprising riders. What a touching story.
• 1:26:21
A heartbreaking story came out of the Olympics about the two young sprinters who were under a false impression as to when the race was to be run
• 1:26:28
and blew the whole thing four years of hard work down the drain.
• 1:26:31
Wow. The pitch to Yeager's low ball two, two and all.
• 1:26:35
That'll probably be one of the top sports stories of the year and of many, many years to come.
• 1:26:41
The frustration of four years down the drain, the wrong starting time. You read about it?
• 1:26:47
Pitch to Yeager's low ball three. And I loved it. I don't know whether the column appeared in the Times today or what because it's syndicated.
• 1:26:55
But did you read Jim Murray's column? It happened to be in today's paper here in St. Louis.
• 1:27:00
Here's the three-all pitch. Yeager takes a strike for in one.
• 1:27:06
He talked about coming to Munich, the world's biggest beer garden. He had some great line.
• 1:27:13
Here's the three-one pitch to Yeager. Low ball four.
• 1:27:17
Jim ended up the column taking a shot at the departing head of the Olympics, Avery Brundage.
• 1:27:23
It's a pretty good bitter line to be used, I guess, against a lot of people.
• 1:27:30
It said, quote, he always went to the heart of the matter and gave it a coronary.
• 1:27:39
One away. Here is Doug Rowe, Dodger leading four to nothing in the sixth inning.
• 1:27:45
I'm reading a great book on George Kaufman of playwright. He had marvelous quotes and lines attributed to him.
• 1:27:54
Right hand to Palmer, a look over at Yeager and a pitch to Rowe. He takes a strike.
• 1:27:58
Oh, and one. And Yeager hit that booby-trapped area and almost fell to his knees.
• 1:28:02
And he's going to go out there and try and scrape the dirt around like a cat in a sandbox and see if he can't even things out.
• 1:28:09
But boy, that's a bad spot. Oh, and one to count.
• 1:28:13
Somebody was recommending a doctor to Kaufman. He said, listen, the only kind of doctor I want is a guy who, if he's not examining me, he's home studying medicine.
• 1:28:21
There's a guy who's working at his trade. There's a bunch to Palmer. He makes his play to size more and the sacrifices in the books.
• 1:28:29
Two down. Yeager is at second base and the batter is Lee Lacey. Dodger is leading four to nothing in the sixth.
• 1:28:34
It's dark and cold. And there's a threat of rain all around us.
• 1:28:41
The rain stopped at about 1.15 local time. So it is now we've had a dry spell of about two hours.
• 1:28:49
The weatherman said we'd have a dry spell between showers of about three to four hours.
• 1:28:55
Well, apparently we still have a period of grace and we can keep going.
• 1:29:01
Yeager at second with two out on the sixth. Four to nothing Dodgers and Lacey trying to pick him up.
• 1:29:10
Lacey is single struck out and grounded out. Palmer took a hit away from him, barehanding and slapping one down in the fourth inning.
• 1:29:17
  Lacey takes low ball one.
• 1:29:29
Here's a one-oh pitch to Lacey. Fung on and missed one and one. Kaufman had a line about a dreamy actress who was in a terrible play and she just thought everything was great.
• 1:29:39
He said about her, you heard of somebody living in a fool's paradise? She has a duplex there.
• 1:29:45
The pitch to Lacey is outside ball two, two and one. Marvelous. Two and one to count.
• 1:29:58
Palmer at the bell. The look back at Yeager. Fastball to Lacey. It's hit the right carball coming up. Faking. It's going to land in front of him for a hit.
• 1:30:05
Yeager not fooled by the fake with two out comes in to score. Down to second goes Lacey.
• 1:30:11
I don't know why carball was faking a catch with two out. There's no reason for Yeager to be fooled by any fake. He just has to come.
• 1:30:19
He scored standing up and on the play at the plate. Lacey took advantage and moved to second base and the Dodgers lead five to nothing.
• 1:30:30

• 1:30:39
Buckner is fouled out, grounded out, lined out. He's 0 for 3. Palmer delivers. Fastball low. Ball one.
• 1:30:48
So Lacey goes two for four. Picks up an RBI.
• 1:30:56
Here's the 1-0 pitch to Buckner. Fastball swung on and missed one and one.
• 1:31:06
Dodgers five. They're trying to make a dismal day even drearier for St. Louis. The Cardinals no runs, two hits.
• 1:31:15
The 1-1 pitch to Buckner. Fastball fouled away.
• 1:31:22
Ray Baer begins to throw in the Cardinal bullpen.
• 1:31:37
The next one to Buckner is hit foul, a third and out of play, so it's still one and two.
• 1:31:51
Two down, six inning. Dodgers five and the Cardinals nothing. The 1-2 pitch. Buckner hits the ground ball to size more.
• 1:31:58
Ted can wait for it and throws to first and that's that. The Dodgers get a run on a hit and leave a man.
• 1:32:04
At the end of five and a half. Dodgers five. Cardinals nothing.
• 1:32:08
As you listen to these programs about our history, it's easy to see how much our country has changed.
• 1:32:14
But as a people, we're not so different from the Americans who lived a hundred or two hundred years ago.
• 1:32:19
We've retained an outlook that our forefathers had. At Union Oil, we like to call that outlook the Spirit of 76.
• 1:32:26
And part of the Spirit of 76 is the way Americans have always insisted on getting their money's worth.
• 1:32:32
We know all about that at Union Oil. And through the years, we've been researching and improving Union 76 gasoline
• 1:32:39
to keep up with changes in automobiles and driving conditions.
• 1:32:43
We make Super 76 and regular 76 so you go with the Spirit. That means you get fast starting, quick warmups.
• 1:32:51
What we call spirited performance. The gasoline you buy at your 76 station are as efficient and hard working as we can make them.
• 1:32:59
Because we try to give you your money's worth. It's part of our spirit. The Spirit of 76 lives at Union Oil.
• 1:33:13
Bottom of the sixth inning, the Dodgers five, the Cardinals nothing. King of the road in the background.
• 1:33:18
That's the way Doug Rowe has been through five, allowing just two hits.
• 1:33:22
A one out double to Ted Simmons in the second inning.
• 1:33:25
Then after retiring ten in a row, a two out double to Skip Jutzi in the fifth inning.
• 1:33:31
Jose Cruz will bat for Lowell Palmer. The Cruz will be followed by Brock and then Sizemore.
• 1:33:38
And Palmer, who picked up for Don Durham, will now lead.
• 1:33:50
Palmer went four and two third innings and allowed just one run. And now here's Cruz hitting for Palmer.
• 1:33:57
Jose hitting two fifteen. He has one home run, eighteen runs batted in.
• 1:34:06
Doug Rowe looks in for a sign. Rick Fulkers, F-O-L-K-E-R-S, a left handed throwing in the Cardinal bullpen.
• 1:34:14
So the Dodgers will look at him in the seventh inning.
• 1:34:17
Doug Rowe ready, delivers, Cruz takes high. Ball one, one and oh.
• 1:34:29
Cruz is from Puerto Rico. He has a brother who's an outfielder with the Cardinal organization.
• 1:34:38
In fact, they were both in spring training together. Jose made it. His brother didn't.
• 1:34:50
One ball and no strikes to count. Here comes Rowe, Cruz, late and fouls it away into the seats off third.
• 1:34:57
And the count one ball, one strike.
• 1:35:05
The Dodgers got four in the second inning with the base loaded and one out.
• 1:35:09
Yeager tripled everybody home and then Rowe tripled home Yeager.
• 1:35:13
The one one pitch, Cruz waves at a curve and doesn't get it. One and two.
• 1:35:18
Dodgers added one more in the sixth inning at the expense of Lowell Palmer on a walk sacrifice and Lacey's single to right.
• 1:35:34
Doug Rowe's one two pitch is popped in here foul off to the left of the plate.
• 1:35:39
Ballantine has a shot at the ball and makes the catch under the vocal guidance of catcher Steve Yeager.
• 1:35:45
One away and the batter Lou Brock.
• 1:35:54
Brock has grounded the short and flied the left over to Brock came into the game at three oh four.
• 1:36:10
The pitch to Brock low and away ball one one oh.
• 1:36:23
  One and all the count.
• 1:36:28
Rowe ready and delivers and is a drive to center. Davis moving over to his left is under it and makes the catch.
• 1:36:36
The two down in the sixth inning.
• 1:36:40
That brings up Ted Sizemore who has grounded the short and filed out.
• 1:36:45
Rowe is throwing strikes. That's the big thing.
• 1:36:49
He is not overpowering but he's been putting the ball apparently just where he wants to and that ball must be moving.
• 1:36:57
And so far he's had everything his way.
• 1:37:01
Sizemore over to Rowe delivers and down goes Teddy underneath the high fastball one and all.
• 1:37:14
Rowe to the wind up Doug's one oh pitch change squirted off the end of the bat foul and over to the cardinal dugout.
• 1:37:21
So at the high inside fastball Sizemore came back up the swinging and he was out in front on a change up one and one.
• 1:37:34
  One ball and one strike.
• 1:37:36
Rowe's next change is hit on the ground down to Bill Russell and Russell throws him out.
• 1:37:42
So Doug Rowe in six innings in his major league debut is pitching a shutout and he's allowed just two hits.
• 1:37:49
And at the end of six Dodgers five Cardinals nothing.
• 1:37:53
Everyone knows that baseball teams do a lot of traveling but maybe you don't realize that some of the sausage in your store puts in plenty of travel time too.
• 1:38:00
On your next visit to the meat department take a look at the sausage packages.
• 1:38:04
You'll see that a good deal of the sausage is shipped in from places up to a thousand miles and more away.
• 1:38:10
And it travels these many miles either frozen or in cold storage.
• 1:38:14
There's nothing wrong with this sausage but you'd agree that the fresher the sausage the better its flavor and color.
• 1:38:19
Now I'm talking about Farma John's sausage.
• 1:38:22
To assure freshness Farma John makes it right here in the west from eastern corn fed pork he dresses fresh in the west.
• 1:38:29
Farma John goes all out in seasoning too.
• 1:38:32
Artificial seasonings aren't good enough for him.
• 1:38:34
He makes his sausage to an old time western recipe using only natural herbs and spices to give it the real flavor of the west.
• 1:38:42
Enjoy Farma John's sausage in skinless links or rolls mild and hot.
• 1:38:46
It's the east and most in quality and the west and most in flavor.
• 1:39:16
Alright those from the New York Mets.
• 1:39:36
So Bibby and Fulkers came over and Bibby was optioned out as was Fulkers.
• 1:39:42
He wound up a little rock where he won five and lost four and had an earned run average of three one six.
• 1:39:48
So the young left hander stepping in now as we go to play on the seventh inning and the Dodgers lead five nothing behind Rao.
• 1:39:56
Doug has allowed just two hits to the Cardinals in six innings.
• 1:40:00
Davis waiting to pitch from the left hander high and tight ball one.
• 1:40:03
Willie doubled down the right field line in the fifth inning.
• 1:40:06
He's one for three lined out his first time up and then fly to center.
• 1:40:11
Five runs six hits for the Dodgers no runs two hits for the Cardinals.
• 1:40:15
Fulkers delivers a curve ball that's bounced foul past Gilliam and the count is one ball one strike.
• 1:40:21
The Cubs lead San Diego now six to nothing in the ninth inning.
• 1:40:28
Or is that an eight David.
• 1:40:34
Cleveland five and Minnesota three in the seventh inning.
• 1:40:38
Davis plays a high five ball down the right field corner and it's looking away foul ball and back beyond the bullpen.
• 1:40:45
So Davis hit an off speed pitch and pulled it away foul.
• 1:40:51
The only other game in the National League today San Diego at Chicago.
• 1:40:59
And make it eight to three in the ninth inning.
• 1:41:02
But we're having a mess with Western Union today so we can't be sure.
• 1:41:05
There's a fly ball to shallow left Anderson going out Cruz comes in the left fielder moves in and makes the catch for the.
• 1:41:12
So Davis flies out one away the batter will be Parker who has walked right out popped out.
• 1:41:19
So less over to Crawford on deck the Dodgers have only six hits today triples by Jaeger and Rao with a big blow.
• 1:41:30
Davis had a double Lacey said two singles.
• 1:41:34
The fly ball to center field Melinda is coming up a few steps and he's there to make the catch and we have to us.
• 1:41:40
This ball game moving around along with the seventh inning now with two away and here's Crawford at bat.
• 1:41:45
Willie has walked twice rounded into a force out Crawford batting to thirty six playing left field.
• 1:42:00
Now the windup and the pitch fastball to lower one ball no strikes.
• 1:42:05
  Rich Holker's FOLKERS.
• 1:42:15
Now the pitch swollen and bounce foul to Gilliam in the first base line and it's a one one count now to Willie Crawford.
• 1:42:26
Dodger batting star Jaeger a bases loaded triple Doug Grau also tripled.
• 1:42:32
So the two youngsters in the lineup having a good day and also the third youngster Lee Lacey has two that.
• 1:42:39
Now the one one pitch curve is in there a strike called one and two one ball and two strikes to Willie Crawford in the seventh inning.
• 1:42:50
Next pitch in the dirt bounces away to the left in the count to and to a jury afternoon but at least the rains have stayed away not allows to get the game in.
• 1:43:02
Weatherman says it'll clear tomorrow so we shouldn't have any weather problems.
• 1:43:06
Tomorrow's game on radio and television is a bouncing ball foul again to Gilliam to and to warm up time 10 55 on KFI the Dodger Radio Network and in the Los Angeles area.
• 1:43:21
  K.H.J. Channel nine.
• 1:43:28
  Here's the pitch.
• 1:43:29
Crawford it's a ground ball on the left field base it's only a little late on the other slams it by Torrey on the left and that's hit number seven for the Dodgers brings to bat Valentine who is one for three single the right last time up the line to shot at the shortstop Anderson and they turned it into a double play.
• 1:43:47
Now it's about time for an only Olympia beer happy to be with you today from St. Louis.
• 1:44:00
Here's the look on the pitch to Valentine looked into centerfield that's going to drop for a base hit Crawford goes to second base and stops there.
• 1:44:07
So Valentine gets a second of the game a single to center to one and Bill Russell at bat has walked and hit by a pitch and grounded out.
• 1:44:16
So bill over one batting to eighty seven for homers and 29 runs batted in had a key triple in last night's game in the second game the Dodgers split the double header now trying to make it two out of three against the Cardinals this year the Dodgers are six and four.
• 1:44:33
We have one left tomorrow warm up time 10 55.
• 1:44:39
Now the look check of the runner in the pitch on the way ground ball right back to the pitcher poker's as it throws in time in the side out Russell hit it hard but right back to the box no runs two hits and two left score at the end of six and a half innings Dodgers five Cardinals
• 1:44:55
nothing time now for another Toyota tail shopping around.
• 1:45:06
Never knew I was so popular that I started pricing economy card.
• 1:45:10
I showed more hands today than an underdog running for office.
• 1:45:14

• 1:45:18
It's like a political primary out there.
• 1:45:20
Everybody has a better price than everybody else.
• 1:45:23
You want to save yourself a lot of trouble.
• 1:45:26

The lowest price model of the 10 best selling economy cars at your nearby Toyota dealer.
• 1:46:00
  Let's pause for station identification.
• 1:46:02
This is the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
• 1:46:07
  This is KT AR Phoenix.
• 1:46:17
All right young Doug Ra ready to go to work to Carbo Torrey and Simmons here in the seventh inning.
• 1:46:23
Rao has allowed two hits to the Cardinals a double by Simmons in the second and a double by Jetsy in the fifth.
• 1:46:30
And here's Carbo at bat now struck out and popped out.
• 1:46:34
Rao has struck out one has not walked about.
• 1:46:37
  He's been in complete control.
• 1:46:41
Now the young left hander all set to go to work.
• 1:46:44
Texas signed into the windup and the pitch on the way too high for a ball one.
• 1:46:48
Rao is working on a shutout and a strange note is that this year at Albuquerque he did not have a shutout.
• 1:46:59
Now the one oh pitch on the way foul back upstairs and it is strike one ball one.
• 1:47:05
Rao at Albuquerque won 14 games and lost three.
• 1:47:09
Earned run every three point five.
• 1:47:11
He had four complete games and 25 starts.
• 1:47:17
One one pitch on the way.
• 1:47:19
Carbo takes inside with a fastball two and one.
• 1:47:25
On deck Joe Torrey then Simmons Dodgers lead five to nothing in the seventh inning.
• 1:47:34
  Rao ready delivers.
• 1:47:36
Carbo takes a strike two and two.
• 1:47:39
He got the outside corner with that one.
• 1:47:42
  Two balls and two strikes.
• 1:47:44
The Dodgers after the debacle and they use the entire bullpen in Chicago trying to get another complete game.
• 1:47:50
Following that they have not had a pitching change.
• 1:47:53
Osteen Sutton and Downing have pitched complete games.
• 1:47:56
There's a curve inside ball three he missed with a three and two.
• 1:48:02
So since Wednesday I've had to go to the bullpen before that was enough.
• 1:48:05
They used everyone in the bullpen in that game against the Cubs.
• 1:48:10
John was the starter and Mickelson, Paranowski, Strawler and Rick it all got in there.
• 1:48:15
Here's ball four high and inside he walked in.
• 1:48:18
So Rao gives up a walk to the leadoff man here in the seventh inning and here's Torrey at bat fouled out and grounded out.
• 1:48:26
The Dodgers of course at this stage of the game will keep a very close eye on Rao.
• 1:48:31
It's his first game here and he's pitched very well.
• 1:48:41
Now Torrey at bat, grounded out and fouled out.
• 1:48:44
Rao ready to work with the runner at first base out of a stretch for only the third time in the game and the first time with the man on first base.
• 1:48:52
  Curve is a little high.
• 1:48:53
Ball one, one ball and no strikes.
• 1:48:56
  One and all to count.
• 1:48:58
  Rao working seventh inning.
• 1:48:59
Simmons on deck and Melendez to follow.
• 1:49:03
Here's the check and the pitch.
• 1:49:05
That curve is low ball too.
• 1:49:07
So all of a sudden now Rao into a little control trouble and Steve Yeager goes out to the mound to talk to him and the bullpen moves around.
• 1:49:15
  Somebody begin to throw there.
• 1:49:17
The next time your car needs a loop job, take it to Union 76.
• 1:49:29
Jim Brewer is going to begin throwing in the Dodger bullpen.
• 1:49:36
And Rao now ready to work.
• 1:49:38
Two and all to count for Torrey.
• 1:49:40
Here's the pitch on the way.
• 1:49:41
Fastball low ball free and it's a three and all count.
• 1:49:46
Young Doug Rao sailing along in fine style and all of a sudden hitting a bad spot here.
• 1:49:53
Checks and looks in the pitch.
• 1:49:55
  Torrey takes high.
• 1:49:56
  He walked him on four.
• 1:49:58
So back to back walk here by Rao to begin the seventh inning.
• 1:50:03
And the batter now will be Ted Simmons and Valentine goes to the mound to talk to Rao.
• 1:50:08
The big thing about Rao's game today has been his control.
• 1:50:12
And now all of a sudden he is at a little wild streak.
• 1:50:15
He has a five run lead to work on, however.
• 1:50:18
Here's Simmons at bat, doubled and flied to right.
• 1:50:21
Melinda is on deck and Jutsey to follow.
• 1:50:24
And Brewer heating up in the Dodger bullpen.
• 1:50:31
  All right, Rao waiting.
• 1:50:33
  Yeager gives a sign.
• 1:50:34
Here's the look and the pitch on the way.
• 1:50:36
  Curve strike on one.
• 1:50:38
So they came right in with the curve ball to Simmons and got it for the strike.
• 1:50:43
Brewer warming up in a hurry in left field.
• 1:50:45
  Dodgers lead five to nothing.
• 1:50:47
  Rao ready.
• 1:50:49
Checks and looks and here's the pitch.
• 1:50:50
Simmons a swing and a drive.
• 1:50:52
  Backhanded by Valentine at third.
• 1:50:54
He saved a couple of runs.
• 1:50:56
A line drive and a backhand play by Valentine to take an extra base hit away from Simmons.
• 1:51:02
Bobby diving toward the line to backhand that one.
• 1:51:05
And that really helped Rao out of a tight spot.
• 1:51:09
Rao won out in the inning and here's Melinda at bat as Valentine backhanded the ball on the line.
• 1:51:17
One away and Melinda's at bat, rounded out and popped out.
• 1:51:23
Rao got a big assist there from Bobby Valentine.
• 1:51:26
That ball was headed for the corner and a runner too.
• 1:51:31
Melinda is the center fielder hitting 253.
• 1:51:34
  Rao's pitch.
• 1:51:35
And that was a fly ball down the right field line.
• 1:51:37
A throwing away foul that's going to be out of play down in the stands.
• 1:51:41
  Strike one to Melinda.
• 1:51:49
Cardinal fans begin to make some noise.
• 1:51:51
A crowd of 9,237 out today.
• 1:51:55
Held down because of the bad weather.
• 1:52:00
All right, waiting at the plate.
• 1:52:01
Melinda is with Jutzi on deck.
• 1:52:03
  Here's Rao's pitch.
• 1:52:05
A foul away on the ground back of the plate.
• 1:52:07
  Strike two, 0-2 the count.
• 1:52:10
  Final score.
• 1:52:15
Milt Pappas has pitched a no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs against San Diego and beat them 8-0.
• 1:52:21
So Milt Pappas had no hitter.
• 1:52:25
That's the second in the league this year, both by Chicago pitching.
• 1:52:30
Burt Hooten pitched one against Philadelphia earlier in the year.
• 1:52:33
So Milt Pappas pitches a no-hitter.
• 1:52:43
Now the pitch inside for ball 2-2.
• 1:52:52
So Milt Pappas has been around a long time.
• 1:52:55
Now gets his 197th win with that no-hitter in Chicago.
• 1:53:02
See if that's the first one for Milt.
• 1:53:04
Now the pitch on the way.
• 1:53:06
Hopped up into shallow center field.
• 1:53:08
  Davis comes jogging in.
• 1:53:09
  Willie there to call.
• 1:53:11
And under it now makes the catch and the runners hold up.
• 1:53:14
So Melinda flies out and here's Jutzi coming up.
• 1:53:18
Here's the catcher skip Jutzi coming on now.
• 1:53:35
For Pappas, the first one of his career.
• 1:53:38
And as I said, the second of the year.
• 1:53:41
Pass ball to Jutzi's inside ball.
• 1:53:43
  One ball and no strikes.
• 1:53:54
Milt beat the Dodgers last week 2-1.
• 1:53:56
Here's a foul on the ground behind the plate.
• 1:54:02
  And it's a one-on-one count to Jutzi.
• 1:54:04
In that game against Singer, Bill allowed only four hits.
• 1:54:08
The Dodgers had nine but only one run against Milt.
• 1:54:11
Today he comes back with a no-hitter.
• 1:54:19
Here's the pitch on the way.
• 1:54:21
Line drive in the left field for a face hit.
• 1:54:23
And around third comes a runner to score and it makes it a 5-1 ball game.
• 1:54:28
So Jutzi singles to left field to drive in the run and take the shutout away from Doug Ross.
• 1:54:34
So one of the walkers cashed in as Farbo scored.
• 1:54:37
Stopping his second is Torrey and the batter will be Dwayne Anderson.
• 1:54:41
  5-1 ball game.
• 1:54:43
  In the inning two walks.
• 1:54:45
And a line drive out that really saved things for Rao.
• 1:54:48
And now a line single to left field by Jutzi.
• 1:54:53
That's only the third hit allowed by Rao.
• 1:54:55
And here is Anderson coming up.
• 1:54:57
He has grounded out and fly it out.
• 1:54:59
Dodgers five and the Cardinals one.
• 1:55:05
And Rao looking for the third out here in the inning.
• 1:55:14
  Now the pitch.
• 1:55:16
  Anderson takes high ball one.
• 1:55:18
Well the White Sox lost another one.
• 1:55:20
They can't win the pennant if they can't win on the road.
• 1:55:22
And they are a bad road club this year.
• 1:55:24
  The Yankees beat them 2-1.
• 1:55:25
Playing the winner, Bradley the loser, and the Yankees all of a sudden are right in the thick of it.
• 1:55:30
There's a curve low ball to and Doug Rao struggling here in the seventh inning.
• 1:55:35
The Yankees have won seven out of eight.
• 1:55:37
They were a game and a half out going into the action today.
• 1:55:41
Detroit at Oakland later and Baltimore at California tonight.
• 1:55:45
The Yankees really making a lot of noise.
• 1:55:47
  Now the pitch to Rao.
• 1:55:48
Fly ball to center field playable.
• 1:55:50
  Davis jogging over.
• 1:55:51
Waiting under it now and makes the catch.
• 1:55:54
  Side out.
• 1:55:56
So a run on a hit and two walks and two left.
• 1:55:59
The score at the end of seven innings to play.
• 1:56:01
Dodgers five and the St. Louis Cardinals have won.
• 1:56:04
  Oli, Oli, O.
• 1:56:30
Such a special beer, that's Olympia.
• 1:56:36
It's the way we age, our Oli, Oli gear.
• 1:56:41
It's the water and the life, it's the hops and drinks.
• 1:56:47
The best that we can find.
• 1:56:50
It's the extra time, that's just one reason why.
• 1:56:55
The time to make each drink, to make Olympia.
• 1:57:01
It's the water and the life, Oli, Oli.
• 1:57:06
Danny Goodman's latest souvenir bargain package.
• 1:57:09
Four items, two dollars including mailing and handling.
• 1:57:12
A package of 25 by 7 Dodger pictures with autographs.
• 1:57:15
  A 1972 Dodger yearbook.
• 1:57:18
  12 National League Club pennants.
• 1:57:20
  And a Dodger baseball cap.
• 1:57:22
Send your name and address, two dollars to Danny Goodman,
• 1:57:25
  Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles 90012.
• 1:57:34
Okay, we're all set to go into the eighth inning.
• 1:57:36
  More play here, Spence.
• 1:57:38
Alright, Jerry, the Dodgers holding on to a 5 to 1 lead.
• 1:57:41
They'll have catcher Steve Yeager, then Doug Rowe and Lee Lacey.
• 1:57:45
Yeager has triple struck out on walk.
• 1:57:58
Fokker's first pitch over for a strike, 0 and 1.
• 1:58:11
Now the next one swung on and missed strike 2, 0 and 2 to Yeager.
• 1:58:16
  Dodgers five runs, eight hits.
• 1:58:19
And the Cardinals one run, three hits.
• 1:58:24
The strike two pitch on the way is a curveball high, ball one, one and two.
• 1:58:36
The one, two pitch low in the dirt.
• 1:58:43
Two balls and two strikes to Steve Yeager.
• 1:58:45
Fokker's back with a fastball and he just missed outside with it.
• 1:58:49
Kind of pounds his left hand into the heart of his glove.
• 1:58:52
  Thought he had it.
• 1:58:57
Joe Grisenda throwing down the Cardinal bullpen and the fastball is swung on
• 1:59:01
  and missed strike three.
• 1:59:03
So Yeager strikes out, one away and the battle will be Doug Rowe.
• 1:59:11
Rowe tripled home a run, walked and sacrificed.
• 1:59:16
He had the Cardinals shut out for six innings.
• 1:59:18
His control deserted him briefly in the seventh and he gave up one run.
• 1:59:22
But he's still leading handily, 5 to 1 in the eighth with one out.
• 1:59:27
This will be Fokker's last inning of work.
• 1:59:29
He's due to bat second when the Cardinals hit in the eighth inning.
• 1:59:33
He gets a strike to Rowe.
• 1:59:35
The Cardinals are due to have Jose Cruz, the left fielder,
• 1:59:38
then Fokker's and Sizemore so they're getting Grisenda ready.
• 1:59:42
  High chopper wide to third.
• 1:59:44
Torrey one hands and fires across to Simmons who makes a good tag on Rowe
• 1:59:48
coming by having left the bag.
• 1:59:51
Oh, nice play by Ted Simmons.
• 1:59:56
Two down in the eighth inning and that brings up Lee Lacey.
• 2:00:01
Lacey is 2 for 4, both singles to right field.
• 2:00:05
He has struck out and grounded out.
• 2:00:12
Had it not been for a nice play by Lowell Palmer in the fourth inning,
• 2:00:15
Lacey would be 3 for 4.
• 2:00:19
The Lee waiting, Fokker looks in to Jutzi ready and delivers
• 2:00:24
a foul back on one, probably the most watched player on the field.
• 2:00:30
Every movement he makes is being scrutinized closely by about a dozen
• 2:00:35
big league scouts is the Cardinal catcher skip Jutzi, the pitch to Lee Lacey is high 1-1.
• 2:00:41
Because first of all he comes up with a reputation of being the outstanding
• 2:00:44
catcher in the American Association, the pitch high ball 2-2-1.
• 2:00:48
And they know that Ted Simmons is certainly the number one catcher in the Cardinal plan.
• 2:00:52
Therefore the scouts are watching Jutzi and deciding whether he would be worth
• 2:00:57
making a big deal for and whether he'd be ready to catch first string next year in the big leagues.
• 2:01:04
Pitch is outside to Lacey ball 3, 3-1, skip Jutzi, J-U-T-Z-E is the 3-1 pitch.
• 2:01:11
  Lacey takes high ball 4.
• 2:01:15
The 2-out walk will bring up Bill Buckner.
• 2:01:30
Bill Buckner fouled out, grounded out, lined out, and grounded out.
• 2:01:34
  It's been a long day for Bill, he's 0-4-4.
• 2:01:37
Last night he went 0-4-4 in the second game.
• 2:01:43
He's 0-4-10 and he takes high ball 1.
• 2:01:48
He's had one hit in the three games that was a triple.
• 2:01:57
That would give him 1-4-12 in the series.
• 2:01:59
The 1-0 pitch, Buckner grounds it down to Sizemore who retreats,
• 2:02:03
still stays with it to get him, and the Dodgers are done in the eighth.
• 2:02:07
At the end of 7-1-2 the Dodgers 5 and the Cardinals 1.
• 2:02:11
There's at least one tire dealer who thinks the only good tire sale
• 2:02:15
is one that offers a tire you'd probably buy even if it wasn't on sale.
• 2:02:19
That tire dealer is your Union 76 dealer.
• 2:02:22
Right now, participating Union 76 stations in the Los Angeles area
• 2:02:26
are showing their spirit by having a sale on their best-selling tire,
• 2:02:30
  the Union 76 3-Star.
• 2:02:32
It's called the best-seller tire sale.
• 2:02:34
Buy two 3-Star tires and save between $10 and $20.
• 2:02:39
There's no money necessary if you use a Union 76 credit card.
• 2:02:42
Union 76's best-selling 3-Star tires are made with four full plies of polyester cord
• 2:02:48
  in modern 78 series design.
• 2:02:50
Even before the best-seller tire sale,
• 2:02:53
3-Stars were the least expensive four-ply polyester cord tires sold by Union 76.
• 2:02:58
Now, the best-seller is an even better deal.
• 2:03:01
Visit your Union 76 dealer during his best-seller tire sale
• 2:03:04
and drive away with a set of tires you might have bought even if they weren't on sale.
• 2:03:09
The spirit of 76 lives at Union Oil.
• 2:03:12
  Music
• 2:03:19
Bottom of the eighth, 5-1 Dodgers.
• 2:03:21
Five runs, eight hits, no errors for the Dodgers.
• 2:03:23
One run, three hits, and no errors for the Cardinals.
• 2:03:27
Doug Rowe making his major league debut for the Dodgers, and so far so good.
• 2:03:33
He had a six-inning shutout, gave up a run in the seventh on a couple of walks,
• 2:03:38
and he was lucky in the seventh.
• 2:03:40
He needed a very big play, and he got it.
• 2:03:43
The first and second are nobody out.
• 2:03:45
Ted Simmons had a shot that would have been extra bases,
• 2:03:49
and Bobby Valentine made a great play.
• 2:03:53
And Rowe could easily have given up three runs in the seventh inning
• 2:03:56
had it not been for Valentine's saver.
• 2:03:59
So Doug still has a comfortable lead of 5-1, and he's pitching to Jose Cruz,
• 2:04:04
who tries to drag a bunt but leaves it in Jaeger-Smith for a strike.
• 2:04:08
  0-1.
• 2:04:10
Jerry McNurtney is on deck to hit for pitcher Rick Fulkers.
• 2:04:16
Brazenda and Ray Baer are throwing in the Cardinal pen.
• 2:04:20
Cruz takes a curveball low, 1-1.
• 2:04:23
  5-1 Dodgers in the eighth.
• 2:04:35
Now the 1-1 pitch to Jose Cruz, the ground ball down to Lacey.
• 2:04:39
Lee gloves it, gets rid of it in a hurry, and that'll do it for Cruz.
• 2:04:43
The Cruz taps out, one out in the eighth.
• 2:04:49
Here is Jerry McNurtney batting for Rich Fulkers with Ted Sizemore on deck.
• 2:04:55
McNurtney is hitting 2-22, nine RBIs.
• 2:05:08
Brau looks in to get a sign from Jaeger.
• 2:05:16
Doug checking, McNurtney fussing up there at the place of timeout until he's ready.
• 2:05:22
Now we are in the left-handed delivers, fastball away, ball one.
• 2:05:25
It's hard to tell you about Doug Brau.
• 2:05:27
I mean, you sit here and watch him, and you are not overly impressed.
• 2:05:30
  He's not throwing that hard.
• 2:05:32
He doesn't have that great appearing stuff, but he's getting them out.
• 2:05:37
The 1-0 pitch on the way, high fly ball to left field.
• 2:05:41
Crawford waited, then has to come jogging in.
• 2:05:43
He's still coming in and makes the catch for the out.
• 2:05:46
So McNurtney, a fly ball to left field.
• 2:05:49
The big thing, he's had excellent control outside of that momentary lapse in the seventh inning.
• 2:05:56
Left-handers have just about a built-in happy faculty of being able to have a baseball move.
• 2:06:03
The question is, can they get it over the plate?
• 2:06:06
And you get a left-hander who throws strikes, and he is particularly troublesome.
• 2:06:10
Sizemore takes low, ball one, and I would think that that's the thing about Doug Brau.
• 2:06:15
Sitting up here watching him, you don't see too much, but his ball has to be moving on these hitters.
• 2:06:21
The 1-0 pitch, fastball, popped in the air back of first base.
• 2:06:24
Over to get it is Parker.
• 2:06:26
He's right there and makes the catch, and Brau just makes it look so easy.
• 2:06:30
So they're gone in the eighth, and at the end of eighth, Dodgers five, Cardinals one.
• 2:06:35
Well, there are no days off for the Dodgers over Labor Day weekend,
• 2:06:38
but for many of you folks, it's three days of just lazing around,
• 2:06:42
and it's a good time to try something totally different in your holiday barbecuing,
• 2:06:46
a Farmer John boneless fresh pork leg.
• 2:06:50
Farmer John boneless fresh pork legs are so new, they've hardly happened,
• 2:06:55
and they're the most delicious happening that ever went round and round on a rotisserie.
• 2:07:00
Just think, all pork, sweet, succulent, fresh pork with no bone.
• 2:07:05
And because it's Farmer John pork, it's as fresh as fresh can be.
• 2:07:09
Farmer John brings the Eastern corn-fed porkers out here live.
• 2:07:13
Then they meet U.S. inspectors and dress fresh here in the West.
• 2:07:16
Most other packers ship their pork in frozen or cold storage.
• 2:07:20
So look for Farmer John boneless fresh pork legs in your market, or ask your butcher.
• 2:07:25
Get a whole leg or just a part, but shop early,
• 2:07:27
because these new pork roasts are still in short supply.
• 2:07:30
Put a Farmer John boneless fresh pork leg on your holiday shopping list now.
• 2:07:37
Don't forget, 14 more dates at Dodger Stadium,
• 2:07:39
starting with the doubleheader on Labor Day evening with the Cincinnati Reds.
• 2:07:43
  That's this Monday, the 5 o'clock doubleheader,
• 2:07:46
and the auto gates and turnstiles open at 3 p.m. with Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, and company.
• 2:07:51
Then there'll be two more games with the Reds on the nights of the 5th and the 6th.
• 2:07:55
There'll be a spectacular pre- and between-game show
• 2:07:58
staged by the United States Air Force on Labor Day,
• 2:08:01
the 15th Air Force's band from March Field,
• 2:08:04
the famous drill team from Edwards,
• 2:08:06
a missing man flyover of four F-106s from Hamilton Air Force Base north of San Francisco,
• 2:08:11
all coordinated into a colorful show.
• 2:08:14
And before the game the next night, September the 5th,
• 2:08:17
the cast of Adam 12, the TV cops.
• 2:08:19
They'll take on the Los Angeles Police Department.
• 2:08:22
You'll see Marty Milner, Kent McCord, and many others.
• 2:08:29
  Ninth inning, 5-1 Dodgers.
• 2:08:32
The ballgame is just about two hours old now.
• 2:08:36
They had a rain delay, but thanks to the AstroTurf, able to get it in.
• 2:08:41
Ray Baer, B-A-R-E, comes in to pick up.
• 2:08:44
He'll be the fourth Cardinal pitcher.
• 2:08:47
Baer is on one with the league.
• 2:08:49
  This is ninth game.
• 2:08:50
The Livers and Davis, it's a high drive into deep right center field.
• 2:08:54
Melendez to the track near the wall makes the catch, about 390 feet away.
• 2:09:01
Look for a moment there as if the Dodgers would finally hit a home run in St. Louis,
• 2:09:05
but Willie was a couple of feet shy and a long drive to right center.
• 2:09:09
One out and Wes Parker the batter.
• 2:09:15
Parker fly to left and walk popped up and fly to center.
• 2:09:19
  It's a goal for three.
• 2:09:28
The pitch to Parker fouled away off to the left, 0-1 the count.
• 2:09:37
Ray Baer was with the Cardinals in spring training.
• 2:09:43
He was born and raised in Miami, Florida.
• 2:09:46
Off speed pitch is a strike and a count 0-2.
• 2:09:49
  Ray 6-2, 195 pounder.
• 2:09:52
When the Cardinals come up in the bottom of the ninth,
• 2:09:55
standing in the way of Doug Rowe's first victory and first complete game
• 2:09:59
in his first start in the big leagues will be Messers, Carbo, Torrey, and Simmons.
• 2:10:04
  Three pretty fair hitters.
• 2:10:05
  Parker fouls another one away.
• 2:10:10
1-2 the count to Wes Parker.
• 2:10:20
Wes has a look at a breaking ball low.
• 2:10:22
  Ball 1, 1-2.
• 2:10:23
Grisenda and Cumberland, a couple of left-handers going in the Cardinal bullpen.
• 2:10:30
The 1-2 pitch outside, one-handed by Jutzi, 2-2.
• 2:10:39
Ray Baer and Skip Jutzi, an infield of Simmons and Sizemore, Anderson, and Torrey.
• 2:10:44
An outfield of Cruz, Melendez, and Carbo.
• 2:10:46
  2-2 pitch.
• 2:10:47
Parker hits an off speeder to the right of the mound.
• 2:10:49
Down to get it is Baer.
• 2:10:51
Ray fires to Simmons for the out.
• 2:10:53
  2-2 away.
• 2:11:00
Willie Crawford the batter, walked it into a force play, walked again, and single.
• 2:11:04
So Crawford is 1 for 2.
• 2:11:17
Time call by play-dump by Mel Steiner.
• 2:11:20
A ball loose from the Cardinal bullpen, retrieved by Bernie Carbo.
• 2:11:24
  Alright, Crawford at the plate.
• 2:11:26
  Ninth inning, 5-1 Dodgers.
• 2:11:29
Fastball on the outside corner for a strike on one.
• 2:11:32
Boy, you wouldn't have given much chance of getting this one in a few hours ago,
• 2:11:36
but here we are in the ninth.
• 2:11:38
The ball game about two hours and three minutes old, and Crawford takes low.
• 2:11:42
  One ball, one strike.
• 2:11:49
The 1-1 pitch, Willie takes in the dirt, ball two, 2-1.
• 2:11:55
Ray Baer, the fourth Cardinal pitcher.
• 2:11:58
  Don Durham started.
• 2:11:59
He couldn't get out of the second inning.
• 2:12:01
The 1-1 pitch, the bouncer off the glove of Baer, deflected to Anderson,
• 2:12:05
who throws and then Simmons on a big stretch is unable to hold onto the ball.
• 2:12:12
Ted that time tried to handle a low throw with his knuckles facing the sky.
• 2:12:18
Had he turned his hand over so that the palm was facing the sky,
• 2:12:22
he would have held onto the ball.
• 2:12:24
But with knuckles up, it hit the glove and then spilled out,
• 2:12:27
and it will be Simmons drawing the error.
• 2:12:29
A more experienced first baseman would have handled a low throw.
• 2:12:34
So a two-out error charged to Ted Simmons, and the batter is Bobby Valentine.
• 2:12:38
Ground ball into right field, base hit.
• 2:12:40
Crawford takes a look at Carball and holds at second base.
• 2:12:43
The going is too slow to try and take an extra base.
• 2:12:47
So a two-out error followed by a base hit, and the batter will be Bill Russell.
• 2:12:51
And for Bobby Valentine, that is his third hit.
• 2:12:55
He made a great play defensively in the seventh inning.
• 2:12:59
And in the fifth inning, he might have had his fourth hit.
• 2:13:02
He had a line drive, but right at the shortstop, Duane Anderson.
• 2:13:05
So Valentine having a big day, and Bobby came into the game at 2.69.
• 2:13:10
  There is Bill Russell.
• 2:13:11
Walked and hit by a pitch, grounded out twice, 0 for 2.
• 2:13:14
Baer's fastball, a high chopper, back of the mound.
• 2:13:17
Baer gloves it, gets rid of it in a hurry, and Simmons handles it for the out.
• 2:13:21
No runs, one hit, an error, two left, and at the end of 8 1 half innings, Dodgers 5, Cardinals 1.
• 2:13:28
In this world, you only get what you pay for unless you buy a Toyota Mark II.
• 2:13:33
Because when you buy a Toyota Mark II, you pay a low economy price and get a car that's up to its roof in luxury.
• 2:13:39
The Mark II comes with brocaded, adjustable foam cushion, fully reclining bucket seats.
• 2:13:44
A nice little surprise when you adjust, expecting some place to sit.
• 2:13:48
You get a rear window defroster instead of just one for the front window.
• 2:13:52
A nice little surprise when you were expecting to do the back window by hand.
• 2:13:56
You get white walls instead of black walls, power front disc brakes instead of just brakes, and tinted windows instead of the sun.
• 2:14:04
All standard, and there's plenty more.

So take a look at the Toyota Mark II.
• 2:14:08
And if you get the feeling you'll get more than you're paying for, well now don't be shocked.
• 2:14:13
You're not the first person to feel that way.
• 2:14:15
And remember, while supply lasts, pick up a free 100-page Olympic guidebook at participating Toyota dealers.
• 2:14:22
Licensed drivers only. Supply is limited.
• 2:14:25
As we go to the bottom of the ninth inning with the Dodgers leading the Cardinals 5-1, let's pause for station identification.
• 2:14:37
This is the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network.
• 2:14:40
It's now two minutes until two o'clock. This is KTAR in Phoenix.
• 2:14:47
  For Dodger Station.
• 2:14:52
Bottom of the ninth inning, 5-1 Dodgers, Bernie Carbo, Joe Torre, and Ted Simmons in that order.
• 2:14:58
And Doug Rowe, three outs away from his first big league complete game victory in his first start.
• 2:15:06
It's a big day for Doug, this second of September.
• 2:15:11
The left-hander delivers. Carbo takes high and inside, ball one.
• 2:15:15
Bernie has popped a short, struck out, walked and scored the only Cardinal run in the seventh inning.
• 2:15:27
Now the 1-0 pitch to Carbo. Grounded foul outside of first and down the line. One ball, one strike.
• 2:15:35
Over 9,000 came out today, and that's a lot of people.
• 2:15:39
If you'd been in St. Louis and saw the weather, you can't imagine that 9,000 would be here.
• 2:15:44
Because it meant that almost all of them came to the park in the rain.
• 2:15:50
Boy, you have to be pretty optimistic. But by golly, they got the game in.
• 2:15:55
One and one to count to Bernie Carbo. Rowe back to the plate, and it's pop foul back to the plate and into the lower deck.
• 2:16:02
He really jammed in keeping that pitch in on the hands. One and two.
• 2:16:07
Carbo doing a fine job since he moved over to the Cardinals. He was hitting 143 for the Reds.
• 2:16:14
He has doubled that. He's hitting 287 as a Cardinal.
• 2:16:18
The 1-2 pitch to Bernie Carbo. Swung on and missed strike three.
• 2:16:22
And so Rowe picks up his second strikeout, and it's Carbo each time.
• 2:16:32
Doug Rowe has allowed only three hits. A one-out double to Simmons in the second inning.
• 2:16:37
Then he retired 10 in a row until he gave up a two-out double to Jutzi in the fifth.
• 2:16:43
Then he allowed a two-out single to drive in a run to Jutzi in the seventh.
• 2:16:47
Rowe's fastball is grounded to Russell. Bill picks it up across the first base in the dirt, one-handed by Parker.
• 2:16:54
And that'll do it for Joe Torre.
• 2:16:56
And now Rowe is one-out away from a complete game victory and a three-hitter to boot.
• 2:17:03
Ted Simmons has hit the ball very hard. He hadn't been fooled once by Rowe.
• 2:17:09
Ted doubled the left center, lined out to right in the fifth inning, and then perhaps the key play of the game.
• 2:17:16
In the seventh, with two on and nobody out, hit a line drive that was backhanded,
• 2:17:20
as Bobby Valentine did a pirouette to take an extra base hit away from him.
• 2:17:26
Rowe Ruddy delivers. Simmons looking and takes a strike. Goin' one.
• 2:17:36
Two-out on the ninth. Five to one Dodgers.
• 2:17:41
Doug backs off the rubber, scrapes at the dirt, now both feet on top and looks in for a sign.
• 2:17:48
Rowe into the wind-up. Doug strike one pitch. Fastball low, one-and-one. He snapped that one.
• 2:17:55
So with the distinguished left-handers in starting roles, Tommy John, Al Downing, and Claude Osteen,
• 2:18:03
another left-hander bidding for a starting job, Doug Rowe. The one-one pitch, curve low and inside, ball two, two-and-one to Simmons.
• 2:18:20
Doug had a big year at Albuquerque. He was Lesortes' ace down there. He won 14 and lost three.
• 2:18:26
Two-one pitch, high with a fastball, ball three. So he's behind to the one man who has ripped him hard,
• 2:18:32
Ted Simmons. He's had good swings at him each time.
• 2:18:37
Ted has a look at Vern Benson. Now the three-one pitch, the Cardinal first base, line drive right at Valentine,
• 2:18:44
and Simmons has to be an angry young man. He hits four line drives, and he goes one for four.
• 2:18:51
And for Doug Rowe, all the way to win it, five to one.
• 2:18:57
For the Dodgers, five runs, nine hits, no errors. The Cardinals, one run, three hits, one error.
• 2:19:04
Doug Rowe, all the way, he's one and oh. He'll be our guest on the postgame show.
• 2:19:08
Don Durham, the loser, is two and seven. It's the second time the Dodgers have bagged him this year.
• 2:19:13
The Dodgers have won seven of 11 from the Cardinals, winning three of five here, four out of six at home.
• 2:19:23
Tomorrow it'll be Bill Singer and Reggie Cleveland, warm up 10.55, game time 11.15 on KFI, the Dodger Radio Network,
• 2:19:31
and in the Los Angeles area, Channel 9, KHJ-TV. Singer is five and 13, and Cleveland is 13 and 11.
• 2:19:39
Once again, final score, Dodgers five, Cardinals one.
• 2:19:43
  Thank you.
