Latest / OneLegUpAlex Media / Terminello's Take on the NHL Trade Deadline 3-9-25
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Derrek.
- 0:11Speaker 2: All right, well we are ten days away from Saint Patrick. Say,
- 0:14Speaker 2: that's why I'm rocking the Irish Green. And you know,
- 0:17Speaker 2: Lou Lou Turminelo is back with us on Tormilo's take.
- 0:20Speaker 2: By the way, missed you last week. I know you've
- 0:22Speaker 2: been going through some things, but glad to have you
- 0:24Speaker 2: back for this week's take because we just passed the
- 0:26Speaker 2: Anhel deadline.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Thanks for joining me, and Alex, always a pleasure. Thanks
- 0:30Speaker 3: for having me as always.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah, this was a crazy you know what I was
- 0:33Speaker 2: gonna say was, you know, the big song normally for
- 0:36Speaker 2: around the time is shipping up to Boston, but a
- 0:39Speaker 2: lot of people are shipping out from Boston. Let's start there,
- 0:42Speaker 2: shall we.
- 0:43Speaker 3: And they made two trades right at the deadline, literally
- 0:45Speaker 3: at three o'clock, trading their longtime captain and super Pets
- 0:52Speaker 3: and superstar Brad Marchant going to a division rival, the
- 0:57Speaker 3: Florida Panthers. So, uh, he's an unrestricted free agent, so
- 1:03Speaker 3: I assume that Pantas aren't going to assigned to a
- 1:06Speaker 3: long term contract. But the Panthers are trying to win
- 1:08Speaker 3: the Cup again.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Well, we're going to get to like a tale of
- 1:12Speaker 2: two defending teams defending champions. You've got, uh, the Panthers,
- 1:16Speaker 2: who are bolstering, and you have Yukon, who's who's not
- 1:20Speaker 2: there at the top of the Big East, and they're depending.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I don't know, it's interesting to watch the dynamic of
- 1:25Speaker 2: the two. But this Marshand thing is to sport.
- 1:28Speaker 3: It's great.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Well, we're going to see in the next few days
- 1:31Speaker 2: why this fell through, because they were just doing a
- 1:33Speaker 2: contract extension with Marshand and I'm wondering what made it
- 1:37Speaker 2: fell through. I don't know. May it was Aby, it
- 1:39Speaker 2: was health. I mean, what do you think that there is.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I think it's term. I think I don't think it's
- 1:47Speaker 3: average salary. I think it's term. Because even last night,
- 1:51Speaker 3: just before the Islanders traded brock Nelson, they were trying
- 1:56Speaker 3: to resign him and uh, he probably wanted more years
- 2:01Speaker 3: than what the Islanders wanted to give him, which resulted
- 2:04Speaker 3: in the trade to the Colorado Avalanche. And apparently the
- 2:08Speaker 3: Islanders got an elite prospect cal Ritchie back in the trade.
- 2:12Speaker 3: They're trying to get younger. They were not going to
- 2:15Speaker 3: lose brock Nelson in July, you know, without getting something
- 2:20Speaker 3: in return. One of the great Islanders two hundred and
- 2:23Speaker 3: ninety five lifetime goals, fifth on the old time list
- 2:26Speaker 3: for the Islanders. He'll be in the Islanders Hall of Fame,
- 2:29Speaker 3: maybe even retire his number someday. But and he was
- 2:33Speaker 3: the Islander's best forward right to while. I mean, Barzil
- 2:36Speaker 3: has basically missed the whole year with injuries, but he
- 2:39Speaker 3: even the other the other night, he was the best
- 2:42Speaker 3: forward in his last game with the Islanders. So you know,
- 2:48Speaker 3: it's tough business.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Likers get traded here, right. We thought the Bruins were
- 2:51Speaker 2: going to make their capitainal lifer. We thought Nelson was
- 2:54Speaker 2: gonna be a lifer.
- 2:56Speaker 3: But what's it.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Showing you, lou, because I mean, you've seen the sport forever.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Are they just looking to get the draft picks or
- 3:02Speaker 2: is it? Is it more so we need to look
- 3:05Speaker 2: at the future instead of holding on to what we
- 3:07Speaker 2: have for a lifetime. Is that what's going on here? Well?
- 3:09Speaker 3: I think it's what the latter. You know, we can't
- 3:11Speaker 3: hold on what we have for a lifetime. I also
- 3:13Speaker 3: think because the NHL cap is so stringent, and let's
- 3:18Speaker 3: face it, the Islanders have some long term deals. Pierre Angel,
- 3:23Speaker 3: they signed him to seven years at three you know,
- 3:26Speaker 3: at three point one million plus. Scott Mayfield another seven
- 3:33Speaker 3: year deal. And Scott Mayfield once I mean very good player,
- 3:36Speaker 3: Don't get me wrong. He may not be as good
- 3:38Speaker 3: as he used to be. I think the term kills
- 3:41Speaker 3: these teams. And you know the Islanders will call up
- 3:44Speaker 3: says we know a couple of years ago. They're not
- 3:46Speaker 3: close now and they're only four points out of a
- 3:49Speaker 3: playoff spot, and they still might get in. I don't
- 3:51Speaker 3: think they will because if you look at the East,
- 3:57Speaker 3: there's five points. Excuse me, there's ten points separating team
- 4:01Speaker 3: number five, the New Jersey Devils, from team number fourteen,
- 4:06Speaker 3: the Philadelphia Flyers, now ten points has a lot to
- 4:08Speaker 3: make up with twenty games to go, but justos to
- 4:10Speaker 3: show you how bunched up you know, these standings are.
- 4:15Speaker 3: And the Devils have suffered a devastating injury. They weren't
- 4:20Speaker 3: playing well before Jack Hughes wrecked his shoulder and is
- 4:25Speaker 3: out for the year. In their last twenty five games,
- 4:28Speaker 3: out of a possible fifty points, they only had twenty
- 4:31Speaker 3: one points, third worst in the NHL. Now again, they
- 4:35Speaker 3: still have a five point cushion they still have. They
- 4:38Speaker 3: play a lot of games, so they don't have any
- 4:40Speaker 3: games in hand on anybody. But losing Jack ughes On
- 4:47Speaker 3: at the end of that Dallas game the other night
- 4:48Speaker 3: was devastating. He's irreplaceable and he's a pointed game scorer,
- 4:54Speaker 3: and losing Doug Hamilton week to week they're best defenseman.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Uh hers.
- 5:04Speaker 2: But you know, Lou we talk about Nico Horner and
- 5:07Speaker 2: I absolutely love what he's been doing. That that infusion
- 5:11Speaker 2: of Nico into that Devil lineup and all that.
- 5:13Speaker 3: But it can't fall on his shoulder.
- 5:15Speaker 2: So what do you think the next plan is for them?
- 5:17Speaker 3: Some guys are gonna have to step up. You know
- 5:19Speaker 3: what the old saying is next man in, and Nicohesha
- 5:22Speaker 3: has been great for them. He's a great two way hot.
- 5:24Speaker 3: It keeps saying Nico Herner, that's the that's the second
- 5:27Speaker 3: for the Cubs. But that's okay, You're on the right
- 5:29Speaker 3: path and uh again, unless something comes down with the
- 5:35Speaker 3: trade deadline, you know, in the next couple of minutes,
- 5:39Speaker 3: because there's some trades that made at the eleventh where
- 5:41Speaker 3: that aren't announced. They have to go to the league.
- 5:43Speaker 3: We get lead permission. They it's gonna be very tough
- 5:48Speaker 3: for them. I mean, you can't lose a player of
- 5:50Speaker 3: Jack Hughs's caliber at the stage of the season.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And his brother's still still up in the in the
- 5:56Speaker 2: in the maje with them, right, so yes, yes, And.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Ironically on the play that he got hurt, it was
- 6:02Speaker 3: a two on one. It was his brother and him.
- 6:07Speaker 3: It was Luke and Jack coming down on Jack Eichel,
- 6:14Speaker 3: three American players and Ichle kind of tripped them up.
- 6:18Speaker 3: It wasn't a dirty play. It just happened. And uh,
- 6:31Speaker 3: we'll see or the general manager, Tom Fitzgerald, tough for Sheldon,
- 6:35Speaker 3: keep the head coach, but we'll see. Now somebody has
- 6:37Speaker 3: to step up, so uh, I see if they can
- 6:40Speaker 3: hold onto that playoff spot, which I think is going
- 6:42Speaker 3: to beat him stepping up.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Everybody everybody today is saying how Drury's been sleeping and
- 6:47Speaker 2: it's it's a funny joke, but in reality, he's actually
- 6:50Speaker 2: been bolstering this team throughout the week and throughout the season.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I mean, look at all the trades is made already,
- 6:54Speaker 2: so for them not to act on the deadline day
- 6:57Speaker 2: was not entirely surprising to me. I think they're what
- 7:00Speaker 2: the team they got right now, you're.
- 7:02Speaker 3: On your one thousand, correct, Alex. I mean, obviously getting JT.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Miller was the gem that they've gotten. They filled in
- 7:12Speaker 3: in some other places, and uh, I mean, I don't
- 7:15Speaker 3: think you can knock what what Drury's done. And I
- 7:19Speaker 3: think they're still going to squeeze in. I think they're
- 7:22Speaker 3: still going to squeeze into that seventh or eighth spot.
- 7:25Speaker 3: And what they've done too in the last the last
- 7:30Speaker 3: couple of months. And remember since January first, they have
- 7:34Speaker 3: the fifth most points in the NHL. So they recovered
- 7:38Speaker 3: from that four and fifteen debacle in the in the
- 7:41Speaker 3: second quarter of the season, they're they're playing better defense.
- 7:47Speaker 3: There's less high level shots against the Stirkin, so that
- 7:51Speaker 3: that helps him out. Obviously he doesn't have to stand
- 7:55Speaker 3: on his head every night. So I think they're in
- 7:59Speaker 3: pretty good shape. I know, you know, you lose a
- 8:02Speaker 3: couple of games and you could be out of it,
- 8:04Speaker 3: you know, Like we said, the difference between the New
- 8:09Speaker 3: Jersey Devils at number five in the East down to
- 8:13Speaker 3: even a fourteenth place Philadelphia Flyers is only ten points. Yes,
- 8:18Speaker 3: the Flyers aren't going to make the playoffs, since we
- 8:20Speaker 3: know that Montreal's probably gonna make the playoffs, the Islanders
- 8:23Speaker 3: probably aren't gonna make the playoffs. But it just shows
- 8:26Speaker 3: you how bunched up these teams are. I think the
- 8:31Speaker 3: Rangers are going to sneak in. I don't know if
- 8:33Speaker 3: Detroit's going to fall back, if Odawa is going to
- 8:36Speaker 3: fall back. I mean, these are teams that are inexperienced.
- 8:39Speaker 3: They've tried to get into the playoffs before. Last year
- 8:43Speaker 3: Detroit lost on a tiebreak. I think the Rangers are
- 8:47Speaker 3: going to sneak in. I really do. But you know,
- 8:50Speaker 3: Alex to be.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Trad you know, you get that, you certainly get that
- 8:54Speaker 2: feeling you mentioned a while ago Miller empowering Mica and
- 9:00Speaker 2: then some saying that Miller is empowering Calendar. I mean,
- 9:02Speaker 2: there are so many things that have been really impacted
- 9:05Speaker 2: by Miller's.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Has played better. I mean, he was playing just downright awful,
- 9:13Speaker 3: and he's been playing better in these last couple of weeks.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Even Hey, even though I don't I don't like his game,
- 9:21Speaker 3: it seems like Rempy the last couple of weeks has
- 9:26Speaker 3: picked up his game where he looks like he knows
- 9:28Speaker 3: what the heck he's doing out there now. I think
- 9:30Speaker 3: he should have got suspended on Sunday night when you
- 9:33Speaker 3: got with an elbow, considering his past history, but the
- 9:39Speaker 3: league decided that it was okay. But I mean, I
- 9:43Speaker 3: think the Rangers are playing, they're playing well. Their power
- 9:46Speaker 3: plays as good as it was last year. Maybe he'll
- 9:49Speaker 3: get better. That's all I have to do is get
- 9:50Speaker 3: better for the last twenty games of the season. And
- 9:54Speaker 3: the penalty killer is still up there. I think it's
- 9:55Speaker 3: third or fourth in the league. And but Alex the East,
- 9:59Speaker 3: the East. After this deadline, you got Tampa going for
- 10:03Speaker 3: it again. They made trade. They got Yonnie gord back
- 10:06Speaker 3: and they got Oliver Walks from you know, another former
- 10:10Speaker 3: All Star. They're coached by a great a great coach
- 10:15Speaker 3: in Cooper. Uh. They play a win. Florida is going
- 10:18Speaker 3: for it again. Toronto with their trades they with uh
- 10:24Speaker 3: with getting that they want to get a center and
- 10:27Speaker 3: uh and they did in Laughlin from Philly, and they
- 10:31Speaker 3: got Brandon Carlo right at the three o'clock deadline from Boston,
- 10:36Speaker 3: the defensive defenseman, a right handed defenseman that they need.
- 10:40Speaker 3: I think they're in good shape now. Of course for
- 10:43Speaker 3: the maple leafs. They have to have a successful postseason,
- 10:47Speaker 3: you know, of course, that's that's where they are in
- 10:50Speaker 3: their development. They gotta they got to get to the final,
- 10:54Speaker 3: if not win it. So we'll see.
- 10:57Speaker 2: You know, that medium there is very, very tough. But
- 11:00Speaker 2: I gotta ask you this, or gotta say this, Louis
- 11:05Speaker 2: at least both the Rangers, the Devils, the Islanders, if
- 11:09Speaker 2: you looking at the East, got a reprieve because Renton
- 11:12Speaker 2: is no longer in the Eastern Conference as he gets
- 11:15Speaker 2: straight to the stars. I thought that was the other.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Big movie of the day when she said that was
- 11:19Speaker 3: the biggest movie of to day. Alex and you know,
- 11:22Speaker 3: Ranton in was traded from Colorado to Carolina on January
- 11:27Speaker 3: twenty fourth, which was a shocker. And five weeks later,
- 11:32Speaker 3: after turning down what I heard was even more money
- 11:37Speaker 3: than Dallas actually gave him. At two o'clock in the morning,
- 11:41Speaker 3: he signed with Dallas for eight years at twelve and
- 11:45Speaker 3: change a year. I heard that Carolina actually offered him
- 11:49Speaker 3: a little bit more. I guess he didn't want to
- 11:50Speaker 3: play in Carolina or doesn't like Carolina style of play.
- 11:54Speaker 3: But you know they're a chip and chase team. Once
- 11:56Speaker 3: they get the lead, it's all about protecting their lead.
- 12:00Speaker 3: He's going to another team, Dallas, who plays a little
- 12:03Speaker 3: bit that way, but it's definitely more offensive minded and
- 12:06Speaker 3: is a better team. Uh you know, they're just a
- 12:09Speaker 3: deep team in every stretch the word. They have terrific
- 12:12Speaker 3: goaltending and Jake Ant and you're leading away and they
- 12:16Speaker 3: got and they signed them for eight years, so you
- 12:20Speaker 3: got Dallas is a real, real real going to be
- 12:23Speaker 3: a real paying come playoff time. I don't know, and
- 12:27Speaker 3: I had to see how this all plays out, because
- 12:29Speaker 3: even though he's straight, we don't know how these guys
- 12:33Speaker 3: are going to play with just a quarter of the
- 12:35Speaker 3: season left. But uh, you know, we didn't. We didn't
- 12:39Speaker 3: talk about this.
- 12:40Speaker 2: We'll talk about Calvin de Haank because obviously he was
- 12:42Speaker 2: a former Islander, another guy that went from Colorado now
- 12:46Speaker 2: to the Rangers. What's your scouting report on him?
- 12:49Speaker 3: Well, when he came into the league, when the Islands
- 12:52Speaker 3: drift them number twelve overall, he was considered a great
- 12:55Speaker 3: puck rushing defenseman, which he isn't great. He is an
- 12:58Speaker 3: outstanding punck mover. Uh, he never was the offensive force
- 13:03Speaker 3: in his NHL career. That he was. But for the Rangers,
- 13:06Speaker 3: it makes sense with you know, Adam Fox being injured
- 13:09Speaker 3: and we don't know how badly injuredy he is if
- 13:12Speaker 3: he's out for the regular season and be back for
- 13:14Speaker 3: the playoffs or because or before that, because as you know,
- 13:18Speaker 3: in the NHL, injuries are kept hit hidden, so we
- 13:23Speaker 3: don't really we don't really know. But I think it
- 13:25Speaker 3: was a good I think that was a positive move
- 13:27Speaker 3: for the Rangers. It was a positive move. And you know, uh,
- 13:32Speaker 3: he'll probably play on the on the power play and
- 13:36Speaker 3: he'll uh and he'll help help him there. He I mean,
- 13:39Speaker 3: he's I think he scored a point that he was
- 13:42Speaker 3: doing well the other night when I was watching him.
- 13:44Speaker 3: You know, he didn't look out the plays, so he's
- 13:46Speaker 3: a professional. That was a good move by the Rangers.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Another good move by the Rangers. They got that h
- 13:53Speaker 3: Carson SOURCEI the six foot five defensemen and uh he
- 14:00Speaker 3: well he's another guy who'll be a front of the
- 14:02Speaker 3: net clearing presence. I mean, I think the Rangers are
- 14:05Speaker 3: a good shape.
- 14:06Speaker 2: They may miss, you know, no matter what they did,
- 14:08Speaker 2: at least they did what I like to call keep cryder.
- 14:11Speaker 2: I think they had to keep Chris Kreyder the core
- 14:13Speaker 2: of that team. Really, the If you're not going to
- 14:17Speaker 2: make him captain, he's at least the captain in nature
- 14:21Speaker 2: because he just seems to lead that team every which
- 14:24Speaker 2: way and all the rumors, at least he's still on
- 14:26Speaker 2: the team.
- 14:26Speaker 3: I'm happy they kept Cryder. Well, he's got two years
- 14:30Speaker 3: left on his deal, so he was making about six
- 14:33Speaker 3: and a half million, so it would have been hard
- 14:36Speaker 3: to trade him. But really what was hard to trade
- 14:38Speaker 3: him was the fact that he was injured. And for
- 14:42Speaker 3: all Ranger fans who wanted to cry to stay on
- 14:44Speaker 3: a team, his injury might have been the saving grace.
- 14:48Speaker 3: But he's a player who could play in every situation,
- 14:52Speaker 3: kill penalties, power play five on five. He's fast, he's physical,
- 15:00Speaker 3: and yeah, I don't think it's bad that the Rangers
- 15:03Speaker 3: still have him on their roster. And it all depends
- 15:06Speaker 3: on how quickly he gets back from the injury.
- 15:09Speaker 2: All right, now, let's stay stick around to the other
- 15:12Speaker 2: Let's go to the other team in the garden. Because
- 15:15Speaker 2: everybody says it was a playoff matchup possibly last night,
- 15:19Speaker 2: or finals matchup last night, possibly between the Lakers and
- 15:22Speaker 2: the Knicks. Definitely build lived up to his billing. But
- 15:27Speaker 2: I just I don't know. The Knicks don't look like
- 15:29Speaker 2: their finals material yet, so I would I wouldn't go
- 15:33Speaker 2: far to say that. However, it was a fun game
- 15:36Speaker 2: to watch. I wish the Knicks won, But at the
- 15:38Speaker 2: other hand, I don't think they're ready for that finals yet.
- 15:42Speaker 2: They've got some tuning to do, especially when I see
- 15:44Speaker 2: they're one of the dead last and allowing three pointers.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I mean, it's just there's some defensive mechanics. I'd be
- 15:49Speaker 2: fixed up, am I right?
- 15:51Speaker 3: Well, yes, you're right. They're not as good a defensive
- 15:54Speaker 3: team as they were last year. Their chemistry doesn't seem
- 15:57Speaker 3: to be as good as it was last year. Karl
- 16:03Speaker 3: Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson, superstar offensive players in the metrics,
- 16:09Speaker 3: are down at the bottom of the defensive metrics. And
- 16:13Speaker 3: that's not going to get you a championship. You know,
- 16:16Speaker 3: those tight games, but I mean, you cannot You still
- 16:21Speaker 3: have to put the ball in the basket. And Jalen
- 16:24Speaker 3: brunt It scored thirty nine points last night and he's
- 16:27Speaker 3: a great clutch offensive player. Now he got hurt in
- 16:31Speaker 3: the last minute and ten and minute fifteen seconds of overtime.
- 16:36Speaker 3: I haven't heard unless something has just come out on
- 16:40Speaker 3: the status of his injury. But they're gonna need him.
- 16:45Speaker 3: He's their go to guy. But I don't know if
- 16:49Speaker 3: I got to agree with you, I'm not sure barring
- 16:51Speaker 3: injury to their competition, like Cleveland suffering an injury major injury,
- 16:56Speaker 3: the Celtics suffering a major injury if the Knicks can
- 17:01Speaker 3: get get to a conference final or obviously the NBA Final.
- 17:07Speaker 3: On the other hand, the Lakers, who I thought were
- 17:10Speaker 3: going nowhere, and even when they got Luka Dantag, I
- 17:14Speaker 3: was not sure how that was going to play this year,
- 17:18Speaker 3: maybe next year, But it seems like right away Dantag
- 17:22Speaker 3: and the Lakers have clicked. And you know, you have
- 17:25Speaker 3: two guys who need the basketball, and Lebron James has
- 17:28Speaker 3: been playing fabulous basketball really the last two months, and
- 17:33Speaker 3: Dantage you just got there. And it seems like, I
- 17:37Speaker 3: guess because their talents are so great that they're meshing
- 17:42Speaker 3: together right off the bat. And the Lakers are forty
- 17:45Speaker 3: and twenty one. Nobody figured that Alex nobody so And
- 17:50Speaker 3: you got to credit JJ Reddick. He's done a nice job.
- 17:53Speaker 3: He has him thinking of playing both ends of the
- 17:56Speaker 3: court now, so you know, we'll see what's gonna happen there.
- 18:01Speaker 3: That's a very interesting team right now.
- 18:06Speaker 2: We uh you know, I think of this as like
- 18:09Speaker 2: the Giants letting Saquon go in a sense, because look
- 18:12Speaker 2: at the difference that these guys have had on a
- 18:15Speaker 2: different team. And everyone's making fun of Nico Harrison. I
- 18:18Speaker 2: don't even know why the Maps did well. The difference thing.
- 18:22Speaker 3: The difference, Alex, I'm sorry, I mean to cut you off.
- 18:24Speaker 3: The difference between the Giants letting Barkley go and this
- 18:29Speaker 3: Dantage trade. Remember Dallas was in the NBA Finals last year.
- 18:34Speaker 3: They weren't. They weren't a non playoff team like the
- 18:37Speaker 3: Giants have been. So that's the big difference. And you know,
- 18:41Speaker 3: now Barkley has the the highest uh uh contract for
- 18:46Speaker 3: a running back in NFL history. I wonder how that's
- 18:49Speaker 3: going to affect other teams as they try to sign
- 18:52Speaker 3: their running backs because running backs for a long time,
- 18:55Speaker 3: the last six seven years were not getting getting that
- 18:59Speaker 3: big money. But now the Eagles have set a precedent
- 19:02Speaker 3: by giving a great player, no question, Barkley a lot
- 19:07Speaker 3: of money for running back. So that's a very interesting
- 19:12Speaker 3: extension of a contract.
- 19:15Speaker 2: It is landmark. And you know what, as I said
- 19:17Speaker 2: in the when they won the World the Super Bowl,
- 19:19Speaker 2: good for him, Good for him. But with Duncics and Lebron,
- 19:22Speaker 2: by the way, no one really highlighted this, or maybe
- 19:25Speaker 2: a lot of people did. Lebron's up to fifty thousand career.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I mean, guy is an energizer buddy on the court,
- 19:32Speaker 2: no matter how old he is.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Oh my god, he's, he's, he's. I mean, every adjective
- 19:39Speaker 3: you want to add to his brilliance that you need
- 19:43Speaker 3: to add another one. The guy is just a tremendous
- 19:45Speaker 3: basketball player. We always knew that. Still being able to
- 19:48Speaker 3: do it after twenty one years at the age of
- 19:50Speaker 3: forty is remarkable. And he's as basically besides Jordan, he's
- 20:00Speaker 3: as good as just by anybody who's ever played.
- 20:02Speaker 2: All right, let me ask you this then, because obviously
- 20:04Speaker 2: we made a big deal about Brede in his forties
- 20:06Speaker 2: playing and maybe someone say, what do you mean It's
- 20:10Speaker 2: a more physical sport football, But you know basketball can
- 20:14Speaker 2: take your toll too, running up and down the court.
- 20:16Speaker 2: So how do you think he's been doing the longevity?
- 20:20Speaker 3: Well, I think he paid he pays his He pays
- 20:27Speaker 3: over two million dollars a year to these elite personal trainers,
- 20:35Speaker 3: so he's kept his body in shape in tune. I
- 20:40Speaker 3: don't think he drinks. I think I am sure he
- 20:44Speaker 3: eats well, just like Brady you know did. And yeah,
- 20:51Speaker 3: the NBA is a tough league. You're running up and
- 20:55Speaker 3: down for eighty two games and the playoffs are even
- 20:59Speaker 3: tall for mentally and physically. But Lebron has has fine
- 21:03Speaker 3: tuned a physical body which is fantastic to begin with,
- 21:09Speaker 3: and he's made even better. Like I said, he spends
- 21:12Speaker 3: millions of dollars on on physical fitness. And I don't
- 21:15Speaker 3: mean physical fitness like going to going to the gym
- 21:19Speaker 3: for an hour a day. I mean he's he's really
- 21:21Speaker 3: focused on and it's it's paid off him. If more
- 21:25Speaker 3: NBA players will like him, more athletes will like him,
- 21:27Speaker 3: they would be more successful.
- 21:29Speaker 2: By the way, we have some breaking news here. The
- 21:31Speaker 2: Rangers are acquiring forward Nicholas ob Kubel, known for dating
- 21:36Speaker 2: the Stanley Cup, from the Buffalo Sabers, for Eric Branstrom.
- 21:40Speaker 2: So the Rangers do make a trade today, yep, and hey,
- 21:45Speaker 2: you have a Stanley Cup winner on their team. Not bad,
- 21:47Speaker 2: not a bad idea, and he's got that experience. So
- 21:50Speaker 2: we'll see what happens. But there's a little breaking news now, Lou.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I don't know what else is on your mind this
- 21:55Speaker 2: week as we roll into now, oh my god, March madness.
- 21:59Speaker 2: And by by the way, a little plug for Saint John's.
- 22:03Speaker 2: They're having a big get together at Applebean's for free
- 22:06Speaker 2: for fans, by the way, Monday night, So I'll let
- 22:09Speaker 2: you know if I get there. How cool would that
- 22:10Speaker 2: be to meet the seven to sixth?
- 22:11Speaker 3: Right?
- 22:12Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry, the sixth rngth Saint John's Red Storm.
- 22:14Speaker 3: I mean, come on, that'd be awesome. Yeah. Absolutely, And
- 22:20Speaker 3: they're in good shape. I know they they're banged up
- 22:22Speaker 3: a little bit, but that hasn't stopped them from from
- 22:25Speaker 3: winning games. Uh. Right now, they might get they might
- 22:29Speaker 3: get on a three line in the uh uh in
- 22:33Speaker 3: the NCAA tournament, they might be a three seed. I
- 22:36Speaker 3: still think we I mean, hey, Alex, we pegged this
- 22:38Speaker 3: one right. Last year. We said they were going to
- 22:41Speaker 3: be on the bubble the first year of the Patino regime.
- 22:44Speaker 3: The second year, they were going to be in it
- 22:46Speaker 3: and get to at least the second weekend I think
- 22:49Speaker 3: that's gonna happen, and maybe past that, and uh, they
- 22:55Speaker 3: don't shoot the ball well and that could hurt them
- 22:57Speaker 3: come come tournament time. But they play first class there.
- 23:03Speaker 3: I think they're mentally tough, and uh, their veteran team
- 23:07Speaker 3: and they got a brilliant coach. All the only thing
- 23:11Speaker 3: that you gotta do is shoot the ball a little
- 23:13Speaker 3: bit better. But besides that, their tournament ready. It's gonna
- 23:20Speaker 3: be interesting to see how far they go.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Absolutely, and you know it's fun because I watched them
- 23:33Speaker 2: basically topple the Yukon Huskies from at least Big East play.
- 23:37Speaker 2: But as we've said off air, hey the Huskies are
- 23:41Speaker 2: still pesky. And just like you wouldn't bet against Mahomes,
- 23:43Speaker 2: none of us are gonna bet against Hurly in the
- 23:46Speaker 2: big big lights, right.
- 23:48Speaker 3: I'm not betting against I'm not getting betting against Stanny Early,
- 23:51Speaker 3: that's for sure. Yes, this team's not as good as
- 23:53Speaker 3: it was last year for whatever reason, maybe they haven't
- 23:57Speaker 3: meshed together. But I wouldn't want to play them, that's
- 24:00Speaker 3: for sure. Again, if they're an eight nine seed and
- 24:03Speaker 3: they got to play the one seed in the second round,
- 24:06Speaker 3: I would be a very scared one seed, so it's
- 24:12Speaker 3: gonna be interesting and it makes March madness. Now that's
- 24:17Speaker 3: why we love it.
- 24:19Speaker 2: And by the way, the women's side starts, and I
- 24:21Speaker 2: gotta give kudos to Page Bookers who got her number retired,
- 24:25Speaker 2: I believe earlier this week or as a Bucker's She's
- 24:29Speaker 2: just a machine. She's unbelievable for Yukon and she is
- 24:33Speaker 2: definitely someone to watch on the women's side this tournament.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Well, no doubt about it. Obviously if Yukon women have
- 24:40Speaker 3: or even more successful than Yukon men have been, and
- 24:44Speaker 3: they always have a chance to get to the final
- 24:46Speaker 3: four and win it. But yeah, it'll be interesting. South
- 24:50Speaker 3: Carolina obviously going to be up there. A notre game
- 24:52Speaker 3: will be up there, even though I know they've lost
- 24:54Speaker 3: a couple of games last week. So yeah, the women's
- 24:57Speaker 3: tournament of the men's tournament will be uh will be
- 25:02Speaker 3: very interesting.
- 25:03Speaker 2: It's why I feel like, I mean, football is a
- 25:05Speaker 2: lot up and down, but I feel like basketball it
- 25:08Speaker 2: was sort of like someone was at the top every week.
- 25:11Speaker 2: It wasn't as consistent, Am I right? Maybe I didn't
- 25:14Speaker 2: follow us closely.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Well, you know, you're you're you're basically all right. I mean,
- 25:18Speaker 3: there might be thirteen teams from the SEC getting into
- 25:22Speaker 3: the tournament for the first time in history. SEC basketball
- 25:27Speaker 3: had a better year and it's better than SEC football.
- 25:31Speaker 3: They might be thirteen teams from the SEC that make
- 25:34Speaker 3: the tournament, which is just absolutely nuts. The Big Ten
- 25:38Speaker 3: is very tough. This was the first year where they
- 25:42Speaker 3: incorporated the four Pac ten teams. And you know, I
- 25:49Speaker 3: the jury still out on having such geographical different You know,
- 25:58Speaker 3: you have to fly three thousand miles to play a
- 26:01Speaker 3: couple of games, where the past more conferences were more
- 26:04Speaker 3: geographically close by.
- 26:06Speaker 2: You know, Syracuse just flew down to SMU this week.
- 26:10Speaker 2: I mean, this is wild how it's different.
- 26:12Speaker 3: It's why.
- 26:14Speaker 2: And I mean when I see Stanford versus cal as
- 26:16Speaker 2: an Acc, I want to rip my hair out. Louis.
- 26:19Speaker 3: I just I.
- 26:21Speaker 2: It doesn't make any sense. But we'll have to see.
- 26:24Speaker 2: And now the a SEC is so big you don't
- 26:26Speaker 2: even know if you're qualifying for the tournament if you're
- 26:28Speaker 2: losing so much. I mean, it's not like the old
- 26:30Speaker 2: tournament where everybody made it.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Same thing in that same thing. In the Big Ten,
- 26:34Speaker 3: I think the last three teams of the Big ten
- 26:37Speaker 3: don't go to the conference tournament.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Well, we'll have to see how it all shakes out. Now,
- 26:44Speaker 2: there's one other story I wanted to cover because Kevin Kierton,
- 26:47Speaker 2: who has written for the Post, I don't know if
- 26:48Speaker 2: he's there anymore. He wrote this uh to me earlier
- 26:53Speaker 2: today because he wrote the story about there's now going
- 26:57Speaker 2: to be a rule, a new rules for the Hall
- 27:00Speaker 2: of Fame. Have you heard about this yet? I have not.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Gone very interested because you know how much of a
- 27:05Speaker 3: Hall of Fame guy I am, and I don't like
- 27:07Speaker 3: the fact that you know, they've put some guys who
- 27:09Speaker 3: may not be really Hall of Fame or if you
- 27:11Speaker 3: but what is it, Alex? What is the new rules?
- 27:14Speaker 2: Well, anyone who gets on Veterans ballot Veterans committee ballots
- 27:17Speaker 2: and does not receive five votes are off. Then the
- 27:21Speaker 2: mayor may not get one more shot, and if they
- 27:23Speaker 2: don't get five again, they're completely off. So there are
- 27:26Speaker 2: some historic figures, some big players that may never get
- 27:29Speaker 2: in if they don't get five votes or more. I mean,
- 27:34Speaker 2: it seems like I think they're thinking is that it's
- 27:38Speaker 2: going to be it's a big tent already and they've
- 27:41Speaker 2: been letting in almost everybody. You know, no disrespect who's
- 27:44Speaker 2: in there, but it is not narrowed down anymore. Maybe
- 27:47Speaker 2: they want to try and change that. What do you think, Well,
- 27:50Speaker 2: they'll tell you.
- 27:51Speaker 3: The Hall of Fame people will tell you. They'll give
- 27:53Speaker 3: some minuscule number of everybody who's played Major League Baseball
- 27:57Speaker 3: is in the Hall of Fame. But again, when I
- 28:01Speaker 3: look at the Hall of Fame, you have to be
- 28:05Speaker 3: a very Obviously you're on the field. Accomplishments are first
- 28:11Speaker 3: and foremost. Your stacks. You win three hundred and twenty games,
- 28:14Speaker 3: you win, you hit four hundred and seventy five home runs. Absolutely,
- 28:20Speaker 3: but there's also some unique players who need to be in.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Intangible players and I'm gonna always bring us up. Keith
- 28:27Speaker 3: Hernandez should be in the Hall of Fame. In my opinion,
- 28:30Speaker 3: he should have been a first or second Battles Hall
- 28:32Speaker 3: of Famer. You know, Roger Maris, you can make a
- 28:36Speaker 3: really good argument. Here's a guy who went back to
- 28:38Speaker 3: back MVPs. He played on five Pennant winning teams with
- 28:42Speaker 3: the Yankees. He played on two Pennant winning teams with
- 28:44Speaker 3: the Cardinals. A great right fielder, back to back MVPs
- 28:50Speaker 3: he hit sixty one home runs.
- 28:53Speaker 1: And he should be in in my opinion. So Nolan Ryan, Yeah,
- 29:03Speaker 1: he lost a lot of games.
- 29:04Speaker 3: He lost about two hundred and ninety games, two hundred
- 29:06Speaker 3: ninety four games something like that to seventy four whatever
- 29:09Speaker 3: it is. He won over three hundred. But he he
- 29:13Speaker 3: was a unique player who accomplished amazing things. All the
- 29:17Speaker 3: over five thousand strikeouts, seven no hitters. Yeah, they have
- 29:24Speaker 3: let too many people in and we're not going to
- 29:26Speaker 3: go down the list. We talked about it. You know,
- 29:28Speaker 3: Stock Rowland, people like that, Harold Baines, good players, but
- 29:33Speaker 3: not Hall of Fame worthy. And I don't care what
- 29:35Speaker 3: the analytics say.
- 29:38Speaker 2: So I know well and as I think it is
- 29:40Speaker 2: also that the generation I grew up with is not
- 29:44Speaker 2: really qualified now because of the Serrain era, and that's
- 29:46Speaker 2: part of what's hurting this whole situation, no doubt about it.
- 29:50Speaker 2: But to penalize those who did not cheat because that
- 29:58Speaker 2: whole section is it doesn't make just there's just something
- 30:02Speaker 2: that is not right there. So we'll have to see
- 30:04Speaker 2: what happens. Louis. But I know before we go, you
- 30:07Speaker 2: wanted to mention the injuries, the injuries that have been
- 30:13Speaker 2: sustained at the Four Nations Cup, and you're wondering, now
- 30:16Speaker 2: is it even worth playing? Is that where you're thinking,
- 30:18Speaker 2: is lou.
- 30:19Speaker 3: Well alex if If if it was my team and
- 30:23Speaker 3: I'm not a fan, not against the Florida Panthers, but
- 30:25Speaker 3: I don't root for the Florida Panthers, and I lost
- 30:28Speaker 3: the heart and soul of my team for the rest
- 30:30Speaker 3: of the regular season and maybe the Stanley Cup playoffs.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Matthew Kuchuck, we're referring to now you.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Could chuck, which I think led to them getting brad
- 30:39Speaker 3: Mar Shatt at the eleventh hour. Today, I would not
- 30:42Speaker 3: be happy if I was the Bruins, and the Bruins
- 30:45Speaker 3: aren't going to make the playoffs obviously with the trades
- 30:47Speaker 3: they make today they are. They're tearing down there, tearing
- 30:51Speaker 3: down their roster, Charlie mclvoy being injured for the rest
- 30:57Speaker 3: of the year, I would not be happy. And other
- 31:00Speaker 3: guys have bump bumps and Brus Brady could chuk his
- 31:03Speaker 3: in one, and the Ottawa Centers are trying to make
- 31:07Speaker 3: the playoffs. They're right there. So again, yes, it was
- 31:10Speaker 3: great hockey, It was great theater, it was great patriotism.
- 31:15Speaker 3: But if they're going to be doing this every two years,
- 31:18Speaker 3: oh boy. I mean, because, let's face it, oh boy,
- 31:21Speaker 3: you sort of competition. These guys aren't skating around just
- 31:25Speaker 3: for the heck of it. That was some intense play,
- 31:29Speaker 3: and when you play intense hockey like that, that could
- 31:32Speaker 3: lead to injuries.
- 31:34Speaker 2: So it was almost like that that started the Washington
- 31:39Speaker 2: Ranger game at the Garden a few years ago, when
- 31:41Speaker 2: they dropped the gloves like two seconds after face off.
- 31:43Speaker 2: So it was pretty intense. But you know, I love it.
- 31:47Speaker 2: I just think you're right. There's got to be some
- 31:48Speaker 2: protocols in place. But Louis, I gotta say, there's so
- 31:53Speaker 2: much more to go. The Devil's just acquired Darren Sprung
- 31:56Speaker 2: from the Golden Knights, so I'm sure it goes on.
- 32:00Speaker 2: There'll be more trades coming out, so I know you're
- 32:02Speaker 2: going to be following it, Louis.
- 32:03Speaker 3: I will be following you. You have a big day
- 32:05Speaker 3: in hockey, and you know, yeah, obviously the next six
- 32:09Speaker 3: weeks we have all sports colliding, NBA playoffs, NHL playoffs,
- 32:15Speaker 3: March Madness, the opening of the baseball season, NFL free agency,
- 32:20Speaker 3: a lot going on, Alex and we'll be there to
- 32:23Speaker 3: talk about it, which I love.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Yes we will on Terminala's take. Louis loved our chat
- 32:28Speaker 2: today about the trade deadline and getting your take on it.
- 32:30Speaker 2: On Terminillo's take.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Thanks Alex
