- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up? Everyone? Welcome in. This is the check O Deli.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I am Andrew de Checko, Eagles beat reporter for Insidethebirds
- 0:16Speaker 1: dot Com, and I recorded the podcast yesterday before the
- 0:21Speaker 1: news came out, so we're gonna talk about it today.
- 0:23Speaker 1: The Eagles and tight end Dallas Goddard agreed to terms
- 0:27Speaker 1: on a one year deal. I believe it's reportedly worth
- 0:31Speaker 1: seven million, so a lot less than I thought he
- 0:34Speaker 1: was going to command. And those of you who have
- 0:36Speaker 1: listened to me and read my work on Inside the
- 0:38Speaker 1: Birds dot com, you probably remember early in the offseason,
- 0:43Speaker 1: late January, early February, I was of the belief that
- 0:48Speaker 1: there was a chance that got or could come back,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and then when I went to the NFL scouting combine
- 0:53Speaker 1: at the end of February, I was never more unsure
- 0:57Speaker 1: about that based off of what I was gathering and
- 1:00Speaker 1: knowing that it wasn't going to It wasn't going to
- 1:03Speaker 1: be easy, and typically when you look at free agency,
- 1:06Speaker 1: the cost goes up, it doesn't go down, and teams
- 1:10Speaker 1: would in theory be paying for someone off of career season.
- 1:14Speaker 1: All that being said, the Eagles delayed his void date
- 1:18Speaker 1: of his contract. It was supposed to be last Wednesday,
- 1:21Speaker 1: then it became Friday. They moved it Friday to Monday,
- 1:25Speaker 1: but they reached a resolution on Sunday afternoon and they agree,
- 1:30Speaker 1: so Dallas Goddard is back for another season. I liked
- 1:34Speaker 1: the way that the Eagles and Dallas Goddard's side approached
- 1:37Speaker 1: it in the sense that they extended the window to
- 1:44Speaker 1: really work out the details and the negotiation process, and
- 1:50Speaker 1: as Mike Garafalo reported, Goddard had other options on the table,
- 1:54Speaker 1: but the fact that they kept extending that window, it
- 1:57Speaker 1: kept Philly alive, I believe was the wording that he
- 2:00Speaker 1: used there, And yeah, it kept the Eagles in play,
- 2:04Speaker 1: but it also precluded Dallas Goddard from being a free agent,
- 2:09Speaker 1: so he wasn't even on the open market, and he
- 2:12Speaker 1: wouldn't have been unless something happened on Monday where they
- 2:15Speaker 1: had to avoid it and then take a dead cap
- 2:18Speaker 1: hit of more than twenty million, which would have been
- 2:23Speaker 1: a hefty chunk, needless to say, and had a lot
- 2:26Speaker 1: of other ramifications that sort of spawned from that. And
- 2:30Speaker 1: so it's a really good reunion from both sides. The
- 2:35Speaker 1: Eagles and Dallas Goddard know each other well, this is
- 2:38Speaker 1: the only place that Dallas Goddard has ever played. Drafted
- 2:41Speaker 1: with a forty ninth overall pick in the twenty eighteen
- 2:43Speaker 1: NFL Draft, four hundred and nine receptions for the team,
- 2:47Speaker 1: thirty five career reception touchdown receptions for the Eagles. His
- 2:52Speaker 1: fifty six receptions in the postseason are the most in
- 2:55Speaker 1: team history, and I believe his five hundred and ninety
- 2:58Speaker 1: five receiving yards are second only to Devonte Smith in
- 3:03Speaker 1: Eagles postseason history. So this is someone who has certainly
- 3:07Speaker 1: left his mark in Philadelphia. I talk about his rapport
- 3:10Speaker 1: with Jalen Hurts on the field often, but also the
- 3:14Speaker 1: culture fit in Philadelphia. Dallas Goddard understands the fans, he
- 3:20Speaker 1: understands the city and how everything operates. And simply swapping
- 3:26Speaker 1: him out or trying to piecemeal it together and find
- 3:29Speaker 1: an external option, that's the great unknown, and you don't
- 3:34Speaker 1: have an understanding of how that player is going to
- 3:37Speaker 1: fit schematically, and also with the teammate, with his teammates
- 3:43Speaker 1: and will they embrace the city in the same way
- 3:45Speaker 1: that Dallas Goddard has and understand that it's not the
- 3:49Speaker 1: easiest place in the world to play there's a lot
- 3:51Speaker 1: of there's a lot of variables that I think would
- 3:55Speaker 1: have made it complicated bringing in simply bringing in someone
- 3:58Speaker 1: else who's younger, who can be the tight end one,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and kind of going from there. Dallas Goddard comes back
- 4:05Speaker 1: to Philadelphia a year after posting a career high receptions
- 4:10Speaker 1: in sixty and eleven touchdowns, which is the most that
- 4:13Speaker 1: he's had in a season. And yes, he's thirty one
- 4:16Speaker 1: years old, so those are some of the re like
- 4:18Speaker 1: thirty one years old, the extensive injury history, those are
- 4:22Speaker 1: reasons why I didn't necessarily think that had he got
- 4:25Speaker 1: to the open market, he would have had a hefty
- 4:30Speaker 1: pay day awaiting him. It always felt to me that
- 4:33Speaker 1: the Eagles in Dallas godd were the best pairing, but
- 4:36Speaker 1: you never quite know. From the business side, there's a
- 4:38Speaker 1: lot of other things that are at play when you're negotiating,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and other teams are having a chance to show their
- 4:49Speaker 1: interest in you, and you kind of have to always
- 4:52Speaker 1: let those things play out. But the Eagles, by extending
- 4:55Speaker 1: the void date of his contract, created a window where
- 5:00Speaker 1: they were able to agree to terms and it's probably
- 5:04Speaker 1: the best on all sides. And I got asked an
- 5:06Speaker 1: interesting question today when I called into the morning show
- 5:10Speaker 1: on ninety seven to five The Fanatic, and I was asked,
- 5:12Speaker 1: why do you believe that in Philadelphia Dallas Goddard has
- 5:16Speaker 1: a ton of value? But the seven million dollars that
- 5:19Speaker 1: he's getting this year, the one year deal, it isn't
- 5:22Speaker 1: consummate to what you see from the more preeminent tight
- 5:26Speaker 1: ends in the NFL. And really he's not heralded as
- 5:30Speaker 1: highly as some of the quote unquote premiere tight ends
- 5:34Speaker 1: in the league. You're Travis Kelcey's your George Kittles, Sam
- 5:38Speaker 1: Laporte is a name who's starting to come around, come
- 5:40Speaker 1: up a lot, Trey McBride, and you don't hear Dallas
- 5:44Speaker 1: Goddard's name mentioned in that. And my response was, I
- 5:47Speaker 1: would imagine it has to do with more from a
- 5:50Speaker 1: national perspective. He's known as someone who's going to roll
- 5:53Speaker 1: up six hundred, seven hundred receiving yard seasons. Does in
- 5:56Speaker 1: factor all that much in the red zone. He hasn't
- 5:59Speaker 1: been a vocal point per se in the offense. It's
- 6:02Speaker 1: been sporadic over his time as the starter, and he
- 6:06Speaker 1: took over and during the twenty twenty one season for
- 6:10Speaker 1: zach Ertz, when zach Ertz, of course was traded to
- 6:12Speaker 1: the Arizona Cardinals. But I look at Dallas Goddard's career
- 6:16Speaker 1: and in Philadelphia, it's clear the value that he has.
- 6:20Speaker 1: It's clear the impact that he makes when he gets
- 6:23Speaker 1: the football, and even earlier in his career, really, except
- 6:27Speaker 1: for this season, he's also been a two way player
- 6:29Speaker 1: where his blocking prowess has complemented his receiving ability and
- 6:33Speaker 1: run after the catchability. But he regressed in that area
- 6:37Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five. But I think it has more
- 6:40Speaker 1: so to do with his receiving total, the lack of touchdowns.
- 6:44Speaker 1: He was always missing two or three games a year
- 6:47Speaker 1: because of the physical nature in which he plays the game.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Some unfortunate injuries there, some fluky ones, but they happened,
- 6:54Speaker 1: and I think when you factor all of that into
- 6:57Speaker 1: the mix here, it probably it probably dampered things a
- 7:03Speaker 1: little bit for him in terms of how he was
- 7:06Speaker 1: perceived around the NFL. But make no mistake about it,
- 7:09Speaker 1: and I am not just saying this because I covered
- 7:11Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard and my vision skewed because I see him
- 7:15Speaker 1: at training camp and I see every game. No, it
- 7:18Speaker 1: has to do more so that I watched the entire
- 7:21Speaker 1: NFL and I have a pretty good sense for good
- 7:26Speaker 1: players at that position, difference makers at that position, if
- 7:29Speaker 1: you will, and Dallas Goddard has proven that he's that guy.
- 7:33Speaker 1: When he's healthy, that always is the caveat. But when
- 7:36Speaker 1: he's healthy, he should be mentioned up there. Maybe not
- 7:39Speaker 1: with the Travis Kelceys or the Kittles, but he certain
- 7:42Speaker 1: and I don't do rankings, but he should be mentioned
- 7:46Speaker 1: among some of the better tight ends in the NFL.
- 7:48Speaker 1: And for some reason he kind of gets lost in
- 7:50Speaker 1: the in the mix. But that was my answer. I
- 7:53Speaker 1: thought that it had a lot to do with just
- 7:56Speaker 1: the overall production and not taking into context the offense,
- 8:00Speaker 1: the style that they play, the injury history and all
- 8:03Speaker 1: of that. But he's also thirty one years old. I
- 8:06Speaker 1: do believe that watching how he played last season, Dallas
- 8:09Speaker 1: Goddard has a couple of good seasons left of strong production.
- 8:13Speaker 1: And I happen to believe that in this Shawn Mannyon offense.
- 8:16Speaker 1: And I chuckle when I say it, because we don't
- 8:18Speaker 1: know what a Sewn Mannyon offense is yet. We'll soon
- 8:22Speaker 1: find out. But based off of the influences that Sewan
- 8:26Speaker 1: Manning is coming into Philadelphia with Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVeigh,
- 8:31Speaker 1: Kevin O'Connell. Those are offensive minds who typically involve the
- 8:36Speaker 1: tight ends a little bit more. They're creative and how
- 8:39Speaker 1: they deploy them. They tend to roster more tight ends
- 8:43Speaker 1: than some teams around the league, and I think with
- 8:47Speaker 1: that information, it should give you a lot of optimism
- 8:50Speaker 1: going into the twenty twenty sixth season that Dallas Goddard
- 8:54Speaker 1: is going to have a more prominent role offensively. I'm
- 9:00Speaker 1: not saying that he's going to have eleven or twelve
- 9:03Speaker 1: touchdowns again, but I think a lot of it has
- 9:05Speaker 1: to do with the quality of the targets. How is
- 9:07Speaker 1: he being utilized. Are they giving him the I guess,
- 9:12Speaker 1: the freedom to get vertical and do some things that
- 9:16Speaker 1: he can do where he can break a game wide open.
- 9:18Speaker 1: It doesn't just have to be shorter intermediate passes, doesn't
- 9:21Speaker 1: have to be him breaking a tackle and rumbling for
- 9:24Speaker 1: thirty five yards. He provides a vertical element. He can
- 9:28Speaker 1: be utilized in the red zone, similar to how the
- 9:31Speaker 1: Eagles did last season. There are so many different ways
- 9:34Speaker 1: you can get him involved and if he's able to
- 9:37Speaker 1: dial in that blocking aspect of his game that had
- 9:43Speaker 1: been really well balanced throughout his career, the Eagles are
- 9:48Speaker 1: going to get a tremendous return on their investment. And
- 9:54Speaker 1: I think it was a smart reunion on both sides.
- 9:58Speaker 1: And I can't emphasize enough what the continuity is going
- 10:01Speaker 1: to mean. There's always there's already so much change, new
- 10:04Speaker 1: offensive line coach, new run designs. You have a lot
- 10:09Speaker 1: of new faces on the offensive coaching staff, but Dallas
- 10:14Speaker 1: Goddard has been a constant for Jalen Hurts. Their chemistry
- 10:18Speaker 1: has been building over years and he is that security blanket,
- 10:22Speaker 1: that's safety valve. But I think it's time to get
- 10:25Speaker 1: a little bit more creative in how you deployed Dallas
- 10:28Speaker 1: Goddard and the routes that he runs and involving him
- 10:33Speaker 1: more consistently in the red zone. Last season was last season,
- 10:36Speaker 1: but prior to that, Dallas Goddard had been sort of
- 10:39Speaker 1: an afterthought when it came to the red zone. And
- 10:43Speaker 1: with somebody with that frame six foot five, he has
- 10:46Speaker 1: the wing span, he's physical at the catch point, and
- 10:50Speaker 1: he runs good routes. He knows how to create separation
- 10:53Speaker 1: you would think that you would involve somebody like that
- 10:55Speaker 1: a little bit more frequently in the red zone where
- 10:57Speaker 1: you got to have it. But last season they did.
- 11:00Speaker 1: We'll see if they continue that trend. Arnold Ebiccati spoke
- 11:05Speaker 1: today as well, for the first time, and he had
- 11:08Speaker 1: something interesting to say. He mentioned talking to defensive tackle
- 11:12Speaker 1: Jordan Davis for thirty minutes prior to signing with the
- 11:16Speaker 1: Eagles to get a feel for the defense, the system,
- 11:19Speaker 1: the fit in Philadelphia. He was trying to gauge the
- 11:23Speaker 1: fit and if the Eagles are already getting a return
- 11:28Speaker 1: on their investment in extending Jordan Davis because he did
- 11:31Speaker 1: a hell of a job in the recruiting process. Because
- 11:35Speaker 1: Ebicadi is in Philadelphia. And I've said this before, but
- 11:39Speaker 1: Jordan Davis reminds me so much of a younger Brandon
- 11:42Speaker 1: Graham in his ability to grasp the city, to embrace
- 11:51Speaker 1: everything that's thrown his way adversity, embrace the good times
- 11:55Speaker 1: and the bad times and try to find a positive
- 11:57Speaker 1: in it. And the continuous improvement aspect of Jordan Davis,
- 12:01Speaker 1: but also the radiant personality I believe really reflects what
- 12:08Speaker 1: we've seen from Brandon Graham. Since he was drafted in
- 12:10Speaker 1: Philadelphia and Jordan Davis, who knows if it actually played
- 12:17Speaker 1: a big part in it, but I thought that that
- 12:18Speaker 1: was notable that he said that Arnold, he goes it's
- 12:22Speaker 1: ak at bic katie ak. But he also said that
- 12:29Speaker 1: he became an Eagles fan when he was at Temple
- 12:32Speaker 1: and the Eagles won the Super Bowl in twenty seventeen.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I think he said he walked from Cecil B. Moore,
- 12:37Speaker 1: which is a building I think on Temple's campus, and
- 12:40Speaker 1: he walked when the Eagles won the Super Bowl, he
- 12:43Speaker 1: walked into the city. And I feel like a moment
- 12:47Speaker 1: like that probably was something that when you see that
- 12:50Speaker 1: kind of reaction to an event like that and everybody
- 12:55Speaker 1: was sort of in Unison celebrating a win, it seemed
- 12:57Speaker 1: to have an impact on him and he became an
- 13:00Speaker 1: Eagles fan. He just had a baby girl on Monday,
- 13:06Speaker 1: when the legal tampering period opened, and so she's a
- 13:09Speaker 1: week old. He already has another child, as he mentioned
- 13:12Speaker 1: when he spoke during his press conference. But yeah, it's
- 13:17Speaker 1: been a very a bit of a whirlwind for aka Abkadie.
- 13:22Speaker 1: And we'll see, we'll see how he fits here because
- 13:26Speaker 1: Like I've mentioned before, I've seen glimpses you can watch.
- 13:32Speaker 1: You can glean that from watching him on tape, that
- 13:35Speaker 1: he has developmental qualities and he's a fluid athlete. It's
- 13:40Speaker 1: about becoming more refined and being more consistent because the
- 13:45Speaker 1: talent level is absolutely there, and we'll see what Jeremiah Washburn,
- 13:50Speaker 1: his position coach, is able to get out of him.
- 13:52Speaker 1: But that was a tier above in my estimation. If
- 13:57Speaker 1: you're trying to draw a parallel to the Joshu sha
- 14:00Speaker 1: Is these ogual are signings of last season, this is
- 14:02Speaker 1: a notch above. But until you see how the fit
- 14:07Speaker 1: manifest on the field, it's hard to be able to
- 14:12Speaker 1: gauge the signing and say it's a home run or
- 14:17Speaker 1: sort of convey skepticism that wouldn't be Yeah, I like
- 14:20Speaker 1: the player. We'll see if the fit is right, and
- 14:23Speaker 1: we'll see if he's able to maximize his opportunity in Philadelphia,
- 14:28Speaker 1: using that one year deal as maybe a springboard towards
- 14:31Speaker 1: a more lucrative payday perhaps down the line. That's the
- 14:37Speaker 1: if you're looking for a silver lining, if you're a
- 14:39Speaker 1: player signing a one year deal, it's that you have
- 14:41Speaker 1: an opportunity here on a good football team with cornerstone
- 14:45Speaker 1: components on both sides of the football, to use that
- 14:50Speaker 1: as a launching pad to get back on NFL radars
- 14:53Speaker 1: to reap the benefits off of a good season.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Hey, if you're like me, you're desensitized to the dozens
- 15:00Speaker 2: of notifications on your phone every day. But if that
- 15:03Speaker 2: latest ping is from your security camera, ignoring it could
- 15:06Speaker 2: spell disaster. Picture this, someone's breaking into your home, but
- 15:10Speaker 2: you're giving a huge presentation at work, or you're at
- 15:12Speaker 2: the movies, or you're thirty thousand feet in the sky
- 15:15Speaker 2: on a flight. You'll see the footage in a couple hours,
- 15:17Speaker 2: but by then it's too late. That's why I choose

- 17:11Speaker 2: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 17:15Speaker 2: one and up.
- 17:16Speaker 1: I'd also like to add that former Eagles cornerback Darius
- 17:19Speaker 1: Slay just Slay. He doesn't go by Darius, It's Slay
- 17:24Speaker 1: or Big Play, but he announced his retirement from the
- 17:26Speaker 1: NFL after thirteen seasons on his Instagram Monday, and Slay
- 17:33Speaker 1: joined the Eagles in twenty twenty. If you remember, there
- 17:36Speaker 1: was the Byron Jones sweepstakes, but he ended up choosing
- 17:39Speaker 1: the Miami Dolphins. The Eagles end up trading a third
- 17:43Speaker 1: round and a fifth round pick in the twenty twenty
- 17:45Speaker 1: NFL Draft of Alliance in return for Slay, and he
- 17:50Speaker 1: makes three Pro Bowls out of his five seasons in Philadelphia,
- 17:53Speaker 1: comes up with nine interceptions, wins a Super Bowl, and
- 17:57Speaker 1: has been one of the more consistent corners in recent
- 18:02Speaker 1: memory for this franchise. I think he was largely understood
- 18:06Speaker 1: from many on the outside, but I can tell you
- 18:09Speaker 1: that he was a consummate professional. He was a great
- 18:12Speaker 1: teammate who mentored younger players. They respected and looked up
- 18:17Speaker 1: to him. He was a team captain eventually, which meant
- 18:20Speaker 1: the world to Slay because he had never been a
- 18:24Speaker 1: captain before. Great. It was just a great story of
- 18:27Speaker 1: him really coming into his own here in Philadelphia and
- 18:31Speaker 1: one of the funniest people I think I've ever talked to.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Never he never missed an opportunity to make someone laugh,
- 18:39Speaker 1: and sometimes it was unintentional, but he was a terrific
- 18:42Speaker 1: interview and an impactful player on this team. He played
- 18:45Speaker 1: forty nine snaps in Super Bowl fifty nine, goes out
- 18:49Speaker 1: a champion, goes to the Pittsburgh Steelers after that, But
- 18:53Speaker 1: he's moving on and moving on to the next phase
- 18:56Speaker 1: of his life. But I want to pay respect to
- 19:00Speaker 1: Slay on what has been a outstanding career which includes
- 19:04Speaker 1: six Pro Bowls. He was an All Pro in twenty seventeen,
- 19:09Speaker 1: and he I think was one of the more underrated
- 19:14Speaker 1: corners in the NFL, and he just seemed to get overlooked.
- 19:18Speaker 1: But when you look at the Eagles recent history and
- 19:24Speaker 1: the defenses that have come through here. Slay was a
- 19:27Speaker 1: mainstay as the Eagles were really rebounding, and he solidified
- 19:32Speaker 1: that outside corner spot that, let's not forget, had been
- 19:35Speaker 1: in constant turmoil, was a revolving door for so many years.
- 19:39Speaker 1: But he provided stability and he led in his own way.
- 19:42Speaker 1: And that's something that Christian Parker, former Eagles defensive backs
- 19:46Speaker 1: coach now Cowboys defensive coordinator set at one point. I
- 19:50Speaker 1: believe we were talking at the Super Bowl, but he
- 19:53Speaker 1: mentioned that, and I'll never forget. There's two things I'll
- 19:56Speaker 1: never forget from Slay. The Minnesota Vikings game where he
- 20:00Speaker 1: completely shut down justin Jefferson and what was one of
- 20:03Speaker 1: the more impressive performances I can remember seeing from a
- 20:06Speaker 1: corner and the empty gas can placed at his locker
- 20:12Speaker 1: by Christian Parker leading up to the postseason run where
- 20:15Speaker 1: it was there was a post and note attached to it,
