- 0:01It is tempting for a spiritual seeker to undertake some form of
- 0:05extreme fasting. The practice of fasting has been
- 0:08used since time immemorial all around the world to increase the
- 0:13vital force by reducing the drag of the physical body and its
- 0:17operations around acquiring, preparing, eating and digesting
- 0:23food. Additionally, extreme fasting
- 0:26has been reported to help the seeker achieve various altered
- 0:30states of awareness in what has been called a vision quest.
- 0:35In certain traditions, fasting has also been used as a
- 0:39mechanism to interfere with the vital desire or craving for food
- 0:44or specific tastes. And it has been used by many
- 0:48traditions as a means of fixing the attention on the spiritual
- 0:52process and having the seeker learn how to rely on the Divine
- 0:56for his sustenance by whatever comes into the begging bowl that
- 1:01day during the time prescribed by the path for seeking
- 1:05nourishment for the body. At the same time, there are
- 1:10limitations to the use of fasting and the imbalances it
- 1:13can create in the physical body, which, after all, is
- 1:18foundational for the life on earth and should be properly
- 1:22attended to in order to provide a solid support for the
- 1:26spiritual development. It should be noted that the
- 1:30Titiria Upanishad makes numerous references to the role that food
- 1:35plays in the spiritual practitioner.
- 1:37Sadhna quote. Verily, all sorts and races of
- 1:42creatures that have their refuge upon earth are begotten from
- 1:46food. Thereafter they live also by
- 1:50food, and tis to food again, that they return at the end and
- 1:55last. For food is the eldest of
- 1:58created things, and therefore they name it the green stuff of
- 2:02the universe. Verily, they who worship the
- 2:06Eternal as food attain the mastery of food to the
- 2:09uttermost. For food all creatures are born,
- 2:13and being born they increase by food.
- 2:17And thou shalt not blame food, for that is thy commandment unto
- 2:22labor. Thou shalt not reject food, for
- 2:26that too is the vow of thy labor.
- 2:30Thou shalt increase and amass food, for that too is thy
- 2:34commandment unto labor. End Quote.
- 2:38Translated by Sri Aurobindo the Upanishads.
- 2:41Excerpted from Brahmanandavali and Briguvali.
- 2:46There are numerous further references that make it clear
- 2:49that food is both the physical substance and at various levels
- 2:54of the being, the life energy, the other vibrational energies
- 2:58that sustain and support our overall being in all its parts.
- 3:05There may be benefits to short term fasting on occasion.
- 3:09Recent nutritional science shows that refraining from eating for
- 3:13a certain number of hours in a day can be a positive benefit to
- 3:17the body. This is not the same as long
- 3:21term or extreme fasting, which tends eventually to weaken the
- 3:25body, reduce its substance and strength for most individuals.
- 3:31It is of course possible that certain individuals have found a
- 3:35way to nourish the body without intake of much food.
- 3:39Yet that does not answer the general situation.
- 3:43Paramount's Yogananda in his Autobiography of Yogi reports
- 3:48meeting such an individual. Until and unless an individual
- 3:53can make a transition to a method that supports and
- 3:57strengthens the physical body without the need of physical
- 4:00food intake, the seeker should work to find a suitable balance
- 4:05that avoids the extremes and provides the body what it needs
- 4:09without awakening greed for food, desire or craving.
- 4:15Sri or open to observes quote. The idea of giving up food is a
- 4:21wrong inspiration. You can go on with a small
- 4:24quantity of food, but not without food altogether, except
- 4:28for a comparatively short time. Remember what the Gita says.
- 4:33Quote. Yoga is not for one who eats in
- 4:36excess, nor for one who abstains from eating all together.
- 4:39End Quote Vital energy is one thing of that one can draw a
- 4:45great amount without food, and often it increases with fasting,
- 4:50but physical substance without which life loses its support is
- 4:56of a different order. End Quote Reference Sri
