- 0:00Hi, everybody, Happy Friday. Welcome to another edition of the Yukon Women's
- 0:04Basketball Coaches Show. Bob Joyce and Gino Oriama here for the first four segments,
- 0:09and then lader Maggie Venoni of ct Insider dot com will join us as
- 0:14we'll get some of her stories on the trip to the Caymans in the state
- 0:17of Yukon women's basketball from her perspective. But obviously we start with the coach,
- 0:22and no better person better to talk women's hoops with than Gino. And
- 0:27as we mentioned on the pregame Wednesday night, it looked like you found something
- 0:34in the fourth quarner of the Texas game and it carried over kk Arnold,
- 0:38Ashland Shade get the starting boy. I guess Ashland took some advice to Hart.
- 0:43I mean all she did was score what two thousand points in high school
- 0:46instead of passing the ball, and what six minutes in she had eight points?
- 0:51Matt, amazing How that works? Huh? Well, yeah, you
- 0:55know, you try to get you try to get everyone to try to identify,
- 1:00like what are you good at? And then try to keep it simple,
- 1:04like this is what I'm good at. Okay, do the things that
- 1:07you're good at and what are you not good at? All? This and
- 1:11this? All right, well, don't do those things. So sometimes kids
- 1:15need to be reminded, Uh, there's a reason why we recruited you.
- 1:21You must be really really good at something. And and I think she did
- 1:27finally take it to heart, and hopefully it's a start of something, you
- 1:36know, that gets her in a right in a right frame of mind.
- 1:42Do you know you see her every day. What are some of her strengths
- 1:44that maybe we don't get to see on a regular basis. Uh, I
- 1:52mean, she she's a scorer, you know, and that's what she does
- 1:57when she's again when she's in the rape frame of mind, and she's not
- 2:01overthinking it. You know, she's looking for opportunities to to get herself a
- 2:08shot, and she's not afraid to attack the basket. I'd like to see
- 2:13her get to the rim more often and shoot more free throws, because I
- 2:20think she can do that. You know, she works exceptionally hard, you
- 2:24know, at everything she does. You know, for those young guys,
- 2:30defensively, it's a challenge to guard college players and you've got, you know,
- 2:43enough of enough good players around her, so that hopefully you know,
- 2:50she doesn't feel the pressure of having to be great. She puts so much
- 2:58of it on herself already, so hopefully she doesn't feel any any eiet of
- 3:00pressure. Right and not only was was at Ashland? I mean first quarter
- 3:07season I thirty seven points for a quarter, it was like thirteen of seventeen.
- 3:10You're freshmen, we're seven of ten. That's Ashland, KK and Cadence.
- 3:16Those are some good numbers. Now the challenge is, I mean,
- 3:19you're not gonna get thirty seven every quarter, you know, but you know,
- 3:22if you can get in the twenties every quarter, that's doing something as
- 3:25a team. Because we've talked about that inconsistency that the team just has right
- 3:30now from one quarter to the next. Yeah, that's exactly right. I
- 3:34think we we have to find that, we have to find the consistency.
- 3:38We have to find that rhythm that for instance, like we started in that
- 3:44first quarter, can it stay that way? Ken not necessarily to get thirty
- 3:51seven or forteen every quarter, but it shouldn't go from thirty seven to fifteen.
- 3:55You know, there's got to be more of a you know, a
- 4:00smaller gap there. And yeah, and if you can get in the twenties
- 4:04every single quarter. Then I think you're you're you're doing it the right way,
- 4:09and you're you're getting the shots that you want. So it was a
- 4:15start, and you know, we'll see where that takes us, do you
- 4:17know? I was intrigued and and you know, look, not every coach
- 4:20is perfect. And you've done this long enough to know that you tried a
- 4:25big line up at Texas, and even you said yourself, it backfired on
- 4:29the team. I'm fifteen three at the start. Give Texas all the credit,
- 4:31but regardless what was what the starting lineup was. The two big factors
- 4:35were second chance points. Okay, that as size and rebounding has something to
- 4:40do with that. But the turnovers, I mean, Texas it seemed like
- 4:43made you pay for just about every turnover your team committed. And it was
- 4:46yeah, yeah, they were the worst kind of turnovers, you know,
- 4:50they were the turnovers that led to easy buckets at the other end. And
- 4:58again, when when you're playing against a team, a team like that you
- 5:02saw in the fourth quarter when we did go smaller, we have more guards
- 5:08on the floor, we have better movement, you know, we had more
- 5:15more ball handlers that were comfortable attacking that pressure and three of them were freshmen,
- 5:23you know, so I think that's a that's a positive sign going forward.
- 5:29And yeah, you you as a coach, you know, you you
- 5:32look at what you have, what the opponent is, and what are things
- 5:36that can can work and sometimes it's sometimes it's successful and sometimes it's not.
- 5:45And that particular experiment didn't didn't work right, gin know, is it simplistic
- 5:51to say, I mean, just from basketball X as an O standpoint,
- 5:56you always emphasize getting the ball moving side to side. But it also seemed
- 6:00like in the Texas game that fourth quarter it was a lot of inside coming
- 6:02back out open shots. Is it that simplistic to see things work that way
- 6:08and be successful? Yeah, I mean that's the that's the that's what offense
- 6:15is, you know, is getting getting the defense to move. You know,
- 6:23you come down the floor and you attack the right side of the floor,
- 6:26let's say, and you get the defense moving right and then before they
- 6:30recover, you attack the left side, you know, and then if they
- 6:32recover, then the ball gets back to the middle and the breakdowns start to
- 6:41happen. Defense got to go from here to here to here to here to
- 6:44hear if you keep the ball, if you're stuck with the ball on one
- 6:47side of the floor, there's no breakdowns on the defense, and you've got
- 6:50to create situations where the defense breaks down. And we did that in the
- 6:55fourth quarter. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. What'd you think of the meals?
- 6:59Says there's and their performances on Wednesday. That was a lot of fun,
- 7:02just to kind of see the whole thing come together, and Hot was
- 7:05was pretty darn aggressive. She she had a good game against against Big Sis
- 7:12and and Oskies. Yeah, I thought I thought it was a great night
- 7:15all the way around, you know, the certainly you know, uh,
- 7:20Nika's parents enjoyed it, and uh, how many opportunities do you get to
- 7:25see, you know, your two kids playing against each other in such a
- 7:30great environment. So I'm glad we were able to do it. I I
- 7:39thought they all had a great time and kinda played really really well, and
- 7:45and you know, I think Nico was proud of her, So I I
- 7:54want to say that it was a successful night all the way around. More
