- 1:03Speaker 1: Let's go, it's a story you need to hear to believe.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Then grab your popcorn because there is more. Are the
- 1:13Speaker 1: Bears coming? What do we do about violence at Indianapolis?
- 1:17Speaker 1: And how many more times can we suspend the gas tax?
- 1:20Speaker 1: Governor Mike Brawn joins me right now on the line,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and sir, I appreciate you taking the time. I do
- 1:28Speaker 1: want to get into the Chicago Bears and whether or
- 1:31Speaker 1: not they're gonna be playing in Hammond. But of course
- 1:34Speaker 1: we've got the story here of a fourteen year old
- 1:36Speaker 1: killing a twenty three year old man in a parking
- 1:38Speaker 1: garage in Indianapolis. This has become a national story, and
- 1:43Speaker 1: certainly it is a moment of concern and the anecdotal stories.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Why in the world do I have a job downtown?
- 1:49Speaker 1: Why in the world would I go visit something downtown?
- 1:51Speaker 1: This is the capital city. Is there a place for
- 1:54Speaker 1: the State of Indiana to look at the city of
- 1:57Speaker 1: Indianapolis and say taking over because you can't do the job?
- 2:03Speaker 2: Tony. It's a great point.
- 2:05Speaker 3: And the tragedy of that event I think shocked everyone.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Twenty four year old parking a vehicle and somebody comes
- 2:13Speaker 3: up from behind and takes your life I think that
- 2:16Speaker 3: was a straw that's probably going to break the camel's
- 2:19Speaker 3: back in this one. I remember a year ago had
- 2:21Speaker 3: to send the state police in at the fourth of
- 2:24Speaker 3: July shoot out at the Ok Corral downtown, and then
- 2:28Speaker 3: I think a couple of weeks later preemptively let them
- 2:32Speaker 3: help IMPD, you know when the WNBA came in. So
- 2:36Speaker 3: it's clear that we're willing to help.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Now. I think you've got.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Legislators probably taking notice because miors and hogsit, especially mirors,
- 2:48Speaker 3: they're not doing their job. And you saw Banks, you
- 2:52Speaker 3: saw many others this time speak up, and I think
- 2:55Speaker 3: it's good that it's in Unison. So I think more
- 2:59Speaker 3: and more there's going to be interest among legislators to
- 3:04Speaker 3: do something that starts to rein it in. I noticed
- 3:07Speaker 3: it all when I was a state legislator back in fifteen,
- 3:11Speaker 3: sixteen and seventeen, just homelessness and then crime. Sometimes when
- 3:17Speaker 3: you turn the radio on, you thought they were talking
- 3:20Speaker 3: about Chicago, and we really had that.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Now for a long time.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Nothing seems to have changed, And of course the voters
- 3:27Speaker 3: don't seem to.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Care much about it.
- 3:29Speaker 3: That live here else they'd get rid of the folks
- 3:31Speaker 3: running it, So yes, begs the question is.
- 3:33Speaker 2: It all the voters served?
- 3:35Speaker 1: Is it all the voters? Do you hear from civic
- 3:38Speaker 1: leaders in Indianapolis about the issues with the city and
- 3:42Speaker 1: is there do you ever get requests for the state
- 3:44Speaker 1: to get involved.
- 3:46Speaker 3: I don't think we're hearing as much from the people
- 3:49Speaker 3: that live here as you should.
- 3:52Speaker 2: But yes, more and more, And this.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Is not the This is just to me, the most vivid,
- 4:01Speaker 3: tragic example of it. I think that you know, you're
- 4:04Speaker 3: really going to hear more of it what the state
- 4:06Speaker 3: can do or is willing to do when you're crossing
- 4:09Speaker 3: a jurisdiction. I mean, it's a state capital. We already
- 4:13Speaker 3: can use the state police IMPD asks for that help.
- 4:18Speaker 3: I think they too need to be unleashed a little
- 4:22Speaker 3: more in terms of what they're able to do and
- 4:25Speaker 3: have kind of been, you know, not doing it to
- 4:29Speaker 3: the extent that they need to. And again I think
- 4:32Speaker 3: that comes from the administration. But to me, the prosecution
- 4:35Speaker 3: part of it is where you'd set an example and
- 4:38Speaker 3: for some of this senseless stuff, I would hope that
- 4:42Speaker 3: they'd take the cue from it that this fourteen year
- 4:46Speaker 3: old is going to be you know, the trial is
- 4:49Speaker 3: going to be as an adult. I understand, and we'll see.
- 4:52Speaker 3: But I think at this point it's going to impact
- 4:56Speaker 3: in a broader way. People coming down here, they interview
- 5:00Speaker 3: a few people I saw on some of the local stations.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Well we still feel safe. Well, I think this is
- 5:06Speaker 3: the one UH incident that's going to really have an impact.
- 5:11Speaker 3: And yes, I think the state's going to be willing
- 5:13Speaker 3: to do something because I don't think you're going to
- 5:16Speaker 3: see the local UH politicians, especially the prosecutor's office do
- 5:22Speaker 3: something drastically different.
- 5:24Speaker 2: They've had plan.
- 5:25Speaker 1: You're not leaving You're not leaving the mayor out of
- 5:28Speaker 1: that equation. I mean you've talked because I think the
- 5:32Speaker 1: mayor is the mayor is going to has got the
- 5:34Speaker 1: ability to crank up their own enforcement.
- 5:38Speaker 2: UH.
- 5:39Speaker 3: You know, have this UH any police UH be more aggressive.
- 5:45Speaker 3: We're willing to help, you know by aiding with state police.
- 5:49Speaker 3: But then when you do all that, I think the
- 5:51Speaker 3: real UH sign to actually tamp it back is going
- 5:57Speaker 3: to be prosecution.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Talk to the governor of Indiana, Mike Brawn. Let's now
- 6:04Speaker 1: head north and talk about the Bears. They're supposed to
- 6:08Speaker 1: be making a decision soon. Illinois did not meet their deadline,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and they realized late, hey, why don't we just try
- 6:15Speaker 1: and absolutely steal the concept.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Of what Indiana is doing.
- 6:19Speaker 1: They're going to try and have another session, They're going
- 6:22Speaker 1: to try and take another bite at this, but in
- 6:25Speaker 1: the end this seems fada complete. Even Mayor Brandon Johnson
- 6:30Speaker 1: has eliminated Chicago from contention by going on to a
- 6:34Speaker 1: podcast and saying traffic is so bad getting out of
- 6:36Speaker 1: Soldier Fields that I left the Packers game early and
- 6:40Speaker 1: by the time I got out of the area, the
- 6:42Speaker 1: Bears that come back and won the game, which is
- 6:44Speaker 1: really not a good story you're telling for the team
- 6:47Speaker 1: staying in Chicago.
- 6:48Speaker 2: When does this announcement tappen?
- 6:51Speaker 1: Are the Bears coming to Indiana?
- 6:53Speaker 3: Well, I didn't hear that one, but I think it's
- 6:56Speaker 3: the Chicago legislators, both in the House and the Senate.
- 7:00Speaker 3: The comprise close to the majority of the voting block
- 7:06Speaker 3: in the legislature, and I think that was a spot
- 7:09Speaker 3: that kept it from going through. I think the Senate
- 7:11Speaker 3: actually passed something the House left. If you get a
- 7:15Speaker 3: statement like that, which I had not heard. We all
- 7:18Speaker 3: know that Hammond logistically would be much easier to get
- 7:22Speaker 3: to in the Arlington Heights. Chicago's teed off that they
- 7:26Speaker 3: can't keep it within their city, But who would want
- 7:28Speaker 3: to have a business there of any sort? When the
- 7:31Speaker 3: cities run the way it is, they're paying so much
- 7:35Speaker 3: in their own city budget to service their own debt.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Who do you think is going to pay that off
- 7:39Speaker 3: in the future taxpayers? So I think that's out of
- 7:43Speaker 3: the question. There's a spat among them. Now the clock's
- 7:46Speaker 3: coming into play, and I think we've made it so easy, Tony.
- 7:49Speaker 3: We've done this quickly legislature and the public statement came
- 7:54Speaker 3: on that same day, which should have signaled something, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 3: when we passed it originally as an administration. My team
- 8:02Speaker 3: has been in contact with the Bears organization twice a
- 8:06Speaker 3: week ever since. I think that, along with where would
- 8:09Speaker 3: you want to be the next fifty years, we'll pease
- 8:12Speaker 3: that favorable announcement out soon. Not exactly sure when they've
- 8:19Speaker 3: indicated that they now are going to move to come
- 8:23Speaker 3: to some conclusion.
- 8:24Speaker 2: So I say stay tuned.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I mean, this thing's gone on from Illinoi's point of
- 8:29Speaker 3: view for five and a half years.
- 8:31Speaker 2: They came to us six months ago.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Well, now let's get to the part too, because you
- 8:36Speaker 1: bring up something interesting. There was a story out Russ
- 8:40Speaker 1: McQuaid Fox fifty nine saying that there's a ninety million
- 8:44Speaker 1: dollar buyout if they leave Soldier Field.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I have said we should not pay that.
- 8:50Speaker 1: The deal we have for the Bears is the deal
- 8:52Speaker 1: that's going to make them millions and millions of dollars
- 8:56Speaker 1: for the foreseeable future as long as they.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Play foot well.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And I don't think the NFL is going anywhere. Are
- 9:02Speaker 1: we going to pay their ninety million dollar buyout?
- 9:05Speaker 2: Yes? Or no?
- 9:07Speaker 3: Did not hear that. The deal that's on the table
- 9:11Speaker 3: is on the table. They've been going through due diligence
- 9:16Speaker 3: in some discussions on maybe needing a little more land
- 9:20Speaker 3: to accommodate parking and all the stuff they want to
- 9:22Speaker 3: do there, and that would be a function of what
- 9:24Speaker 3: the City of Hammond works out. But other than stuff
- 9:29Speaker 3: we've been working on that you would in any real
- 9:32Speaker 3: estate deal of this magnitude. We've been working on that
- 9:35Speaker 3: ever since the bill passed, and a lot of that
- 9:37Speaker 3: stuff has been checked off. So anything else that comes up,
- 9:41Speaker 3: including what you just mentioned, I think for us we'd
- 9:46Speaker 3: have to come back in the session to do something
- 9:48Speaker 3: that would be of a magnitude different from what we've done.
- 9:52Speaker 3: I think all that is secondary. I think where we're
- 9:56Speaker 3: at currently is the fact that they dropped the ball.
- 10:01Speaker 3: The time is running out. The league has said they
- 10:04Speaker 3: need to know soon, and any other things that eventuate
- 10:08Speaker 3: in terms of what we need to do, we need
- 10:10Speaker 3: to look at it. But they know they've got a
- 10:12Speaker 3: good package. They've been willing to live with it. And
- 10:15Speaker 3: the only thing that's come up is maybe the need
- 10:18Speaker 3: for more land. And it's not a lot, so it
- 10:20Speaker 3: wouldn't be a major item.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I would never say you're willing to live with it.
- 10:24Speaker 2: They're lucky to have it.
- 10:24Speaker 1: It's an incredible deal for them, and I think it's
- 10:27Speaker 1: going to be a winner for us who's waiting in
- 10:30Speaker 1: the wings here.
- 10:32Speaker 2: We talked about this massive possible.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Development in Hammond's Who have we reached out to and
- 10:37Speaker 1: who has reached out to us to say, hey, if
- 10:39Speaker 1: the Bears come, we think we see some opportunity for
- 10:43Speaker 1: Lake and Porter Counties, for northwest Indiana, for being in
- 10:46Speaker 1: Chicago Lownds.
- 10:48Speaker 3: They have an RDA up there. It is the place
- 10:52Speaker 3: that regardless if the Bears would come or not. It's
- 10:56Speaker 3: got the most turnaround potential most people don't realize. Was
- 11:00Speaker 3: our second largest city at one time, larger than Fort Wayne.
- 11:04Speaker 3: And when Steele left the country and wooshed out of it,
- 11:08Speaker 3: they went from one hundred and eighty thousand people to sixty.
- 11:11Speaker 3: You've got the Gary Airport, you get a convention center
- 11:14Speaker 3: going on up there. If this does happen, Hammond, East, Chicago,
- 11:19Speaker 3: Whiting and Gary and then the entirety of Lake County
- 11:24Speaker 3: will see probably growth that they never imagined. And it's
- 11:27Speaker 3: a place, basically due to Gary alone that has swooned
- 11:32Speaker 3: the most over the last several decades. So lots of
- 11:36Speaker 3: people are interested in development, in more and more interest
- 11:41Speaker 3: as they see this thing getting closer to the finish line.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Well, clearly, you know, if we would already name me
- 11:48Speaker 1: the Trade Ambassador of Indiana, we would already be growing
- 11:52Speaker 1: on this stuff. And I honestly don't know what we're
- 11:54Speaker 1: waiting for anymore. I've provided you the greatest opportunity in
- 11:57Speaker 1: the world, and the answer is I need a sash,
- 12:00Speaker 1: maybe a scepter. And then, of course again with the Parker,
- 12:04Speaker 1: how do you.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Want to do that in the region, not just New York.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Statey I want to Oh, I want to be the
- 12:09Speaker 1: trade ambassador for Indiana. I'm going to do it all
- 12:10Speaker 1: over the country, but I am going to take care
- 12:12Speaker 1: of New York in LA because I know how to
- 12:14Speaker 1: speak those languages.
- 12:15Speaker 2: That's definitely going to happen.
- 12:17Speaker 1: But this, I've been serious about this, and I don't
- 12:20Speaker 1: know why it isn't done.
- 12:21Speaker 3: But the third time you've asked me that publicly, so
- 12:25Speaker 3: I'm going to say you're serious at this point.
- 12:27Speaker 1: That's and that's how one converts. But before I let
- 12:31Speaker 1: you go talking to the Governor of Indiana, Mike Braun,
- 12:34Speaker 1: the Republican Convention is coming up in Fort Wayne, and
- 12:38Speaker 1: the story is the Secretary of State race. Does Governor
- 12:43Speaker 1: Mike Braun have a position on the next Secretary of
- 12:46Speaker 1: State and on this race and what delegates should be
- 12:49Speaker 1: looking at.
- 12:51Speaker 3: So my position is the same as it has been
- 12:53Speaker 3: from the beginning. I went through a convention that was
- 12:56Speaker 3: rowby and we all came through it.
- 13:00Speaker 2: You live with what you have to deal with, and.
- 13:02Speaker 3: In this case, I think there's not been anything probably
- 13:06Speaker 3: on a higher profile than what we've been watching over
- 13:09Speaker 3: the last couple of weeks. And I think you do
- 13:13Speaker 3: sooner or later have to account for stuff that might
- 13:17Speaker 3: not make sense for what you've been doing or what
- 13:20Speaker 3: you need to do to reclaim the office. I'm going
- 13:24Speaker 3: to let it play out. I never endorsed along the way,
- 13:27Speaker 3: so it wasn't put in a position where I had
- 13:29Speaker 3: to pull one. I'm a believer in the system working out,
- 13:33Speaker 3: and I think that whatever happens, we do need to
- 13:37Speaker 3: take seriously the fact that affordability.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Is a big issue.
- 13:43Speaker 3: And the weirdest thing since I've been in politics is
- 13:47Speaker 3: the Democrats now trying to stay they're the party of affordability.
- 13:52Speaker 3: They're better at that game than we are, especially on
- 13:56Speaker 3: the national level, and when you look at what's happening
- 13:59Speaker 3: in terms of competition in the Secretary of States race,
- 14:03Speaker 3: that's symbolic.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Of a broader challenge.
- 14:06Speaker 3: We need to make sure, and I think Indiana's addressing
- 14:09Speaker 3: it better than anyone. On affordability, and that's been the
- 14:13Speaker 3: key theme for me for a long time, from property taxes,
- 14:17Speaker 3: utility rates, extending the gas reprieve again, Republicans need to
- 14:23Speaker 3: make sure, especially in a place.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Like Indiana where we've held.
- 14:27Speaker 3: The realm for so long, and anything that happens like
- 14:31Speaker 3: this drama at the Secretary of State's office. Don't dismiss it, don't.
- 14:37Speaker 3: I've been through the two hardest campaigns probably ever fought
- 14:41Speaker 3: in this state, running for Senate and governor, and I
- 14:44Speaker 3: respect the process and that's the way I'll be at
- 14:47Speaker 3: the convention.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I just want to say, we were talking about the
- 14:50Speaker 1: Secretary of States race and you took it to affordability,
- 14:52Speaker 1: and sir, that is some fantastic political spin, but there's
- 14:56Speaker 1: no endorsement coming from you on the Secretary of States race. Well,
- 14:59Speaker 1: I've got ten seconds left.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Nope.
- 15:02Speaker 3: We're gonna have a slate of at least four candidates there,
- 15:05Speaker 3: and I think, however it ends up, we take everything
- 15:09Speaker 3: serious from there and know that there's a thing called competition,
- 15:13Speaker 3: and even though we haven't had much of it, respect it.
- 15:17Speaker 1: That's the governor of Indiana, Mike Braun. I will see
- 15:20Speaker 1: you up there, sir, where you can name me trade
- 15:22Speaker 1: ambassador right there in front.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Of the delegates.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I look forward to that, Governor, Mike Braun, I'll see
- 15:26Speaker 1: you there. Thank you for being with us. Tony Katz
- 15:28Speaker 1: ninety three WIDC, Good morning,
