Speaker 1: Chapter eighteen, Pinocchio finds the fox and the cat again
• 0:05
Speaker 1: and goes with them to sow the gold pieces in
• 0:08
Speaker 1: the field of wonders. Crying as if his heart would break,
• 0:13
Speaker 1: the marionette mourned for hours over the length of his nose.
• 0:18
Speaker 1: No matter how he tried, it would not go through
• 0:20
Speaker 1: the door. The fairy showed no pity toward him, as
• 0:24
Speaker 1: she was trying to teach him a good lesson so
• 0:26
Speaker 1: that he would stop telling lies, the worst habit any
• 0:30
Speaker 1: boy may acquire. But when she saw him pale with
• 0:34
Speaker 1: fright and with his eyes half out of his head
• 0:37
Speaker 1: from terror, she began to feel sorry for him and
• 0:40
Speaker 1: clapped her hands together. A thousand woodpeckers flew in through
• 0:45
Speaker 1: the window and settled themselves on Pinocchio's nose. They pecked
• 0:49
Speaker 1: and pecked so hard at that enormous nose that in
• 0:52
Speaker 1: a few moments it was the same size as before.
• 0:57
Speaker 1: How good you are, my fairy, said Pinocchio, drying his eyes,
• 1:02
Speaker 1: And how much I love you. I love you too,
• 1:06
Speaker 1: answered the fairy. And if you wish to stay with me,
• 1:09
Speaker 1: you may be my little brother, and I'll be your
• 1:12
Speaker 1: good little sister. I should like to stay, But what
• 1:16
Speaker 1: about my poor father. I have thought of everything your
• 1:21
Speaker 1: father has been sent for, and before night he will
• 1:24
Speaker 1: be here, really, cried Pinocchio joyfully. Then, my good fairy,
• 1:30
Speaker 1: if you are willing, I should like to go to
• 1:32
Speaker 1: meet him. I cannot wait to kiss that dear old
• 1:35
Speaker 1: man who has suffered so much for my sake. Surely
• 1:40
Speaker 1: go ahead, but be careful not to lose your way.
• 1:43
Speaker 1: Take the wood path, and you'll surely meet him. Pinocchio
• 1:48
Speaker 1: set out, and as soon as he found himself in
• 1:50
Speaker 1: the wood, he ran like a hare. When he reached
• 1:54
Speaker 1: the giant oak tree, he stopped, for he thought he
• 1:56
Speaker 1: heard a rustle in the brush. He was right There
• 2:00
Speaker 1: stood the fox and the cat, the two traveling companions
• 2:04
Speaker 1: with whom he had eaten at the inn of the
• 2:06
Speaker 1: Red Lobster. Here comes our dear Pinocchio, cried the fox,
• 2:13
Speaker 1: hugging and kissing him. How did you happen here? How
• 2:18
Speaker 1: did you happen here? Repeated the cat. It is a
• 2:22
Speaker 1: long story, said the marionette. Let me tell it to you.
• 2:27
Speaker 1: The other night, when you left me alone at the inn,
• 2:30
Speaker 1: I met the assassins on the road. The assassins, Oh
• 2:34
Speaker 1: my poor friend. And what did they want? They wanted
• 2:38
Speaker 1: my gold pieces, rascals, said the fox. The worst sort
• 2:44
Speaker 1: of rascals, added the cat. But I began to run,
• 2:50
Speaker 1: continued the marionette, and they after me until they overtook
• 2:54
Speaker 1: me and hanged me to the limb of that oak.
• 2:58
Speaker 1: Pinocchio pointed to the giant and oak near by. Could
• 3:02
Speaker 1: anything be worse? Said the fox? What an awful world
• 3:07
Speaker 1: to live in. Where shall we find a safe place
• 3:09
Speaker 1: for gentlemen like ourselves? As the fox talked thus, Pinocchio
• 3:15
Speaker 1: noticed that the cat carried his right paw in a sling.
• 3:19
Speaker 1: What happened to your paw? He asked. The cat tried
• 3:23
Speaker 1: to answer, but he became so terribly twisted in his
• 3:26
Speaker 1: speech that the fox had to help him out. My
• 3:29
Speaker 1: friend is too modest to answer. I'll answer for him.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: About an hour ago we met an old wolf on
• 3:36
Speaker 1: the road. He was half starved and begged for help,
• 3:40
Speaker 1: having nothing to give him, what do you think my
• 3:43
Speaker 1: friend did? Out of the kindness of his heart. With
• 3:46
Speaker 1: his teeth, he bit off the paw of his front
• 3:49
Speaker 1: foot and threw it at that poor beast, so that
• 3:52
Speaker 1: he might have something to eat. As he spoke, the
• 3:55
Speaker 1: fox wiped off a tear. Pinocchio, almost in tears himself,
• 4:01
Speaker 1: whispered in the cat's ear. If all the cats were
• 4:05
Speaker 1: like you, how lucky the mice would be. And what
• 4:09
Speaker 1: are you doing here, the fox asked the marionette. I
• 4:13
Speaker 1: am waiting for my father, who will be here at
• 4:16
Speaker 1: any moment now. And your gold pieces. I still have
• 4:22
Speaker 1: them in my pocket, except one which I spent at
• 4:25
Speaker 1: the inn of the red lobster. To think that those
• 4:29
Speaker 1: four gold pieces might become two thousand tomorrow, why don't
• 4:33
Speaker 1: you listen to me? Why don't you sow them in
• 4:36
Speaker 1: the field of wonders? To day? It is impossible. I'll
• 4:40
Speaker 1: go with you some other time. Another day will be
• 4:44
Speaker 1: too late, said the fox. Why because that field has
• 4:49
Speaker 1: been bought by a very rich man, and to day
• 4:52
Speaker 1: is the last day that it will be open to
• 4:55
Speaker 1: the public. How far is this field of wonders? Only
• 5:00
Speaker 1: two miles away? Will you come with us? We'll be
• 5:03
Speaker 1: there in half an hour. You can sow the money,
• 5:06
Speaker 1: and after a few minutes you will gather your two
• 5:08
Speaker 1: thousand coins and return home. Rich are you coming? Pinocchio
• 5:14
Speaker 1: hesitated a moment before answering for he remembered the good
• 5:18
Speaker 1: fairy old Geppetto, and the advice of the talking cricket.
• 5:23
Speaker 1: Then he ended by doing what all boys do when
• 5:26
Speaker 1: they have no heart and little brain. He shrugged his
• 5:29
Speaker 1: shoulders and said to the fox and the cat, let
• 5:33
Speaker 1: us go. I am with you. And they went. They
• 5:38
Speaker 1: walked and walked for half a day at least, and
• 5:41
Speaker 1: at last they came to the town called the City
• 5:43
Speaker 1: of Simple Simons. As soon as they entered the town,
• 5:47
Speaker 1: Pinocchio noticed that all the streets were filled with hairless dogs,
• 5:51
Speaker 1: yawning from hunger, with sheared sheep trembling with cold, with
• 5:56
Speaker 1: combless chickens begging for a grain of wheat, with large
• 6:00
Speaker 1: butterflies unable to use their wings because they had sold
• 6:03
Speaker 1: all their lovely colors, with tailless peacocks ashamed to show themselves,
• 6:09
Speaker 1: and with bedraggled pheasants scuttling away hurriedly grieving for their
• 6:14
Speaker 1: bright feathers of gold and silver, lost to them forever.
• 6:19
Speaker 1: Through this crowd of paupers and beggars, a beautiful coach
• 6:23
Speaker 1: passed now and again. Within it sat either a fox,
• 6:27
Speaker 1: a hawk, or a vulture. Where is the field of wonders,
• 6:32
Speaker 1: asked Pinocchio, growing tired of waiting, Be patient. It is
• 6:38
Speaker 1: only a few more steps away. They passed through the city,
• 6:43
Speaker 1: and just outside the walls, they stepped into a lonely
• 6:46
Speaker 1: field which looked more or less like any other field.
• 6:50
Speaker 1: Here we are, said the fox to the marionette. Dig
• 6:54
Speaker 1: a hole here and put the gold pieces into it.
• 6:57
Speaker 1: The marionette obeyed. He dug the hole, put the four
• 7:01
Speaker 1: gold pieces into it, and covered them up very carefully. Now,
• 7:06
Speaker 1: said the fox, go to that near by brook, bring
• 7:09
Speaker 1: back a pail full of water, and sprinkle it over
• 7:12
Speaker 1: the spot. Pinocchio followed the directions closely, but as he
• 7:16
Speaker 1: had no pail, he pulled off his shoe, filled it
• 7:19
Speaker 1: with water, and sprinkled the earth, which covered the gold.
• 7:23
Speaker 1: Then he asked anything else, Nothing else, answered the fox.
• 7:29
Speaker 1: Now we can go return here within twenty minutes, and
• 7:33
Speaker 1: you will find the vine groan and the branches filled
• 7:36
Speaker 1: with gold pieces. Pinocchio, beside himself with joy, thanked the
• 7:42
Speaker 1: fox and the cat many times and promised them each
• 7:45
Speaker 1: a beautiful gift. We don't want any of your gifts,
• 7:50
Speaker 1: answered the two rogues. It is enough for us that
• 7:53
Speaker 1: we have helped you to become rich with little or
• 7:55
Speaker 1: no trouble. For this we are as happy as kings.
• 8:00
Speaker 1: They said good bye to Pinocchio, and wishing him good luck,
• 8:04
Speaker 1: went on their way end of Chapter eighteen.
