Ep. 166. Doctor Strange's full MCU timeline · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:18
Hi guys, it's Megan from Vigilante Vibes and I am here to
• 0:22
talk about Marvel characters. Usually I do a comic book
• 0:26
breakdown of a character or something of that nature, but
• 0:29
today I want to do an MCU breakdown of a character and
• 0:32
talk about their full timeline in in the MCU today will be
• 0:36
Doctor Strange. So since his debut in 2016's
• 0:40
Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch's take on the Master
• 0:44
of Mystic Arts has been on some seriously wild adventures in the
• 0:47
MCU. Based on the classic Marvel
• 0:50
Comics character who first showed up in 1963, Benadryl
• 0:54
Cabbage Patches, Doctor Strange didn't join the MCU lineup until
• 0:57
Phase Three, but he quickly became a major player.
• 1:01
Even though he came in later than some of the OG characters,
• 1:05
Doctor Strange was a key figure in Avengers Infinity War and an
• 1:10
End Game. And now he's one of the biggest
• 1:11
names driving the MCU's Multiverse Saga and setting up
• 1:16
an even more exciting future if we ever get to see him again.
• 1:21
But I believe a Doctor Strange 3 was confirmed.
• 1:27
Besides his two solo movies, Doctor Strange and Doctor
• 1:30
Strange the Multiverse of Madness, he's popped up another
• 1:32
big MCU stories too. He played an important role in
• 1:35
Thor Ragnarok, Spider Man, No Way Home, and even the
• 1:39
  multiverse themed What If series.
• 1:42
After the Infinity Saga wrapped up, Doctor Strange took the lead
• 1:45
in the Multiverse Saga, delivering some of the MCU's
• 1:48
most memorable moments along the way.
• 1:51
There isn't a lot of info about Stephen Strange's early life,
• 1:54
but judging by Butternut Crinkle Fry's age, it's safe to guess
• 1:58
that he was born sometime in the 70s.
• 2:00
We don't know much about his childhood, but in Doctor Strange
• 2:04
in the Multiverse of Madness, there's a brief moment where he
• 2:06
talks about a version of himself from another universe and
• 2:08
mentions having a sister named Donna when they were kids.
• 2:12
Donna tragically drowned after falling into a frozen lake and
• 2:15
Stevens failure to save her is what pushed him to become a
• 2:18
doctor. Probably sometime in the 90s.
• 2:21
Steven Strange went to medical school at Columbia University.
• 2:24
Yep, the same school a bunch of Marvel heroes went to thanks to
• 2:29
his photographic memory. He crushed it, earning both his
• 2:33
MD and PhD at the same time. He picked up the technical stuff
• 2:37
super fast, but years spent years practicing and learning
• 2:40
new skills to become the best doctor he could, all motivated
• 2:44
by the loss of his sister. While the working in the ER at
• 2:49
Metro General Hospital NYC, he met fellow surgeon Christine
• 2:53
Palmer and she became like the biggest deal.
• 2:58
Since Strange was focused on neurological surgery and
• 3:01
researching new nerve cell growth, the two of them actually
• 3:04
  developed a new Laminectomy procedure.
• 3:06
  Together. They started dating, but
• 3:09
Strange's arrogance and obsession with work eventually
• 3:13
pushed them apart, Though they stayed close friends and an
• 3:16
alternate universe from What If? Their relationship ended when
• 3:20
Christine tragically died, which was a huge turning point that
• 3:24
Stephen Strange desperately tried to change.
• 3:29
Even though we didn't see Stephen Strange before his solo
• 3:31
movie, he was already a big deal in the MCU world, I feel.
• 3:36
Remember back in 2014's Captain America, The Winter Soldier, it
• 3:39
was revealed that Hydra had marked him as a target for a
• 3:42
Project Insight, which means his work in neurosurgery was
• 3:46
important enough to be a threat to them.
• 3:49
During The Avengers End Game Time Heist, Smart Hulk met the
• 3:53
Ancient 1 during 2012 Battle of New York, who mentioned that
• 3:56
Strange was actually performing surgery in the city while The
• 4:00
Avengers were fighting Loki, showing just how dedicated he
• 4:04
was to his job. In 2016, after successfully
• 4:09
saving a patient who'd been shot, Strange was getting ready
• 4:12
to speak at American Neurological Association dinner.
• 4:16
On the way there, he was checking out three potential new
• 4:19
patients, but ended up crashing his car because he got
• 4:21
distracted. Even though he survived an 11
• 4:25
hour surgery, his hands were permanently damaged, making it
• 4:28
impossible for him to keep working as a surgeon.
• 4:31
Desperate for a cure, Strange tried physical therapy but hit
• 4:36
  dead ends. Then paraplegic Jonathan
• 4:39
Pangborn, who used magic to walk again, suggested he goes to
• 4:44
Kumar Taj. So Strange traveled to
• 4:48
Kathmandu, found Komar Taj, met Baron Mordo and the Ancient One.
• 4:54
The Ancient One opened his eyes to the vastness of the universe
• 4:57
and its magic. Strange started training in the
• 5:00
Mystic arts, which helped him regain some use of his hands and
• 5:04
introduced him to the Time Stone and other dimensions.
• 5:07
During this time, he also became very close friends with Wong
• 5:11
Kumar Taj Librarian, who would eventually become the next
• 5:14
Sorcerer Supreme. So you could technically say
• 5:18
that the first Doctor Strange movie was actually Wong's coming
• 5:23
out party. This was Wong, this is this is
• 5:27
it, and he's showed up and damn near everything since and I love
• 5:32
it. While training at Kumar Taj,
• 5:36
Strange ended up at New York Sanctum Sanctorium and saw
• 5:40
Kaisilius, an agent of Dormammu from the Dark Dimension, kill
• 5:45
  the Sanctum's master, Daniel Drum.
• 5:48
Strange faced off against Kaisilius and his followers a
• 5:51
few times, but managed to outsmart them with the help of
• 5:54
the Cloak of Levitation and the Ancient 1.
• 5:56
The Cloak of Levitation is a paid actor.
• 6:00
I just want that clear. He the IT did just as much as
• 6:05
anyone else there. After the Ancient One died,
• 6:08
Strange used the Time Stone to undo the damage Kycelius caused
• 6:12
in Hong Kong, then confronted Dormammu himself, trapping him
• 6:17
in a time loop until Kycelius was forced off Earth.
• 6:21
And I don't think it people realize how big of a thing that
• 6:23
is because like Dormammu's a huge character in the comics.
• 6:27
Like the most recent thing was that he fought World Emperor
• 6:32
Doctor Doom. Like he's a big character.
• 6:35
That was a big character to drop in that movie.
• 6:39
After saving the world from the Dark Dimensions dangers, Strange
• 6:43
started keeping track of other threats in to reality, including
• 6:46
Loki. When Thor and Loki came to Earth
• 6:50
searching for their dad Odin, Strange intercepted them, but
• 6:54
once he found out they'd be heading back to Asgard soon
• 6:56
after, he decided to help and point to them toward Norway.
• 7:00
Around this time, Strange also asked Wong to teach him more
• 7:03
about the Infinity Stones. According to The Avengers
• 7:07
Infinity War the Hero's Journey book, which is like a prequel to
• 7:12
Infinity War, Strange had visions of a tentacled monster
• 7:17
named Calcartho attacking Earth. To stop it, Strange and Wong
• 7:21
opened a portal to the Magenta Dimension and used the bonds of
• 7:26
Balazar to trap the creature. They even took their astral
• 7:30
forms to the moon to distract Calcartho, but ended up battling
• 7:35
it back into the Sanctum in New York.
• 7:38
Luckily, Calcartho got pulled back into the magenta dimension,
• 7:43
though Strange and Wong almost didn't make it out.
• 7:46
In 2018, Bruce Banner showed up at the Sanctum Sanctorium with a
• 7:50
warning that Thanos was coming. Doctor Strange gathered Tony
• 7:54
Stark and along with Wong, filled him in on the Infinity
• 7:57
Stones. Soon after 2 of Thanos, Black
• 8:00
Order, Ebony Maw, and Kohl Obsidian Obsidian tried to steal
• 8:06
the Time Stone. Strange got tortured on Ebony
• 8:10
Moss ship, but Iron Man and Spider Man teamed up to blast
• 8:14
Maw into space and rescue him. The trio headed to Titan hoping
• 8:19
to take the fight to Thanos once they met the Guardians of the
• 8:24
Galaxy. On Titan, Strange checked out
• 8:26
14,000,000 possible futures and only 1 ended with The Avengers
• 8:31
winning. When Thanos showed up, the
• 8:34
heroes fought hard to stop him from using the Infinity
• 8:37
Gauntlet. Strange's battle with Thanos was
• 8:40
pretty epic, with him using the mirror dimensions, creating
• 8:43
butterfly effects and multiplying himself to try to
• 8:47
outsmart the Mad Titan. But in the end, Strange handed
• 8:50
over the time zone to save save Tony Stark's life, which let
• 8:55
Thanos finish his mission and wipe out half the universe,
• 8:59
including Strange himself. After the five year blip, the
• 9:03
surviving Avengers pulled off the time highs to grab the
• 9:06
Infinity Stones and bring everyone back.
• 9:09
They succeeded, but then 2014 Thanos attacked The Avengers HQ
• 9:15
right after. Facing him with only a handful
• 9:18
of heroes would have been a no win situation, but Doctor
• 9:21
Strange opened portals all over the universe so every returned
• 9:25
hero could join the fight in the epic Battle of Earth.
• 9:30
Strange also revealed that Tony Stark was destined to sacrifice
• 9:33
himself and he was there to mourn Stark at his funeral.
• 9:36
Later on, after being away for like 5 years, Doctor Strange
• 9:42
came back to find Wong had stepped up as Sorcerer Supreme.
• 9:46
Feeling a bit insecure, Strange made some quick decisions when
• 9:49
Peter Parker showed up after his identity got exposed.
• 9:52
Parker wanted to make everyone forget who he was, but Strange
• 9:56
messed up the spell and accidentally pulled in villains
• 9:58
from other universes who already knew Peter's secret.
• 10:02
Strange wanted to send them back to the door to their doom, but
• 10:06
Spider Man wouldn't hear of it. Later, Peter convinced Strange
• 10:10
to finish the spell properly, saving the multiverse but making
• 10:14
everyone forget Spider Man's identity in the process.
• 10:18
Not long after that, Strange went to Christine Palmer's
• 10:20
wedding. But things got wild when a
• 10:23
monster named Gargantos attacked America Chavez, a multiverse
• 10:27
traveller. Strange and Wong took down
• 10:29
Gargantos, and since America had a special ability, they figured
• 10:33
Wanda Maximov could keep her safe.
• 10:35
But turns out Wanda, as a Scarlet Witch wasn't was
• 10:38
actually hunting America to steal her powers.
• 10:41
It was also pointed out that Gargantos, the monster they were
• 10:45
fighting in New York, remember, if you'll remember the movie, it
• 10:49
was one big eyeball with legs and arms.
• 10:54
That was Wanda's eye. That was Elizabeth Olsen's
• 10:56
  eyeball. So there you go.
• 10:59
So when Strange reached out for Wanda's help, it only brought
• 11:02
the Scarlet Witch's fury down on Kamar Taj, where America was
• 11:05
hiding. In the battle that followed,
• 11:08
America opened a portal through the multiverse, and she and
• 11:11
  Strange jumped through it together.
• 11:13
They zip through all kinds of crazy realities, one with
• 11:17
dinosaurs, other were Hydra 1 and Underwater World, a place
• 11:21
made of paint, even a cartoon universe, before landing on
• 11:24
Earth 838. There they got captured by the
• 11:27
Illuminati, a group of superhero leaders from other realities.
• 11:32
But the Scarlet Witch showed up, wiped out the Illuminati, and
• 11:34
took America back to Earth 616 While the Scarlet Witch took
• 11:40
America Chavez back home, she sent Doctor Strange and a
• 11:43
variant of Christine Palmer to her reality that was getting
• 11:47
wrecked by an incursion. There Strange ran ran into the
• 11:52
corrupted version of himself who had been twisted by the dark
• 11:55
cold, kind of like what happened to Wanda.
• 11:58
After a quick fight, Strange defeated his dark self, but then
• 12:01
used the dark cold to dream walk into the body of another
• 12:05
variance so he could help America fight the Scarlet Witch
• 12:09
in his own reality. This messed with his body,
• 12:11
giving him a third eye like the evil version of himself.
• 12:14
And it did not. It didn't look good.
• 12:17
  It wasn't. It wasn't a good look.
• 12:20
During Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Strange
• 12:23
accidentally caused an incursion, a dangerous event
• 12:26
that could wipe out the entire multiverse if it's not stopped.
• 12:29
He was warned about it by Clay Clea.
• 12:33
I never know, is it Clay or Clea?
• 12:37
Oh Oh no. A mysterious sorceress who
• 12:41
showed up out of nowhere and pulled him through a portal into
• 12:44
the Dark dimension to deal with the problem.
• 12:47
Charlize Theron played Klee slash Clea in the movie.
• 12:51
In the comics she is strange as love interest and eventually
• 12:55
becomes his wife. Doctor Strange 3 has been
• 12:58
confirmed by Bust a Move Cumber Dance, but there's been some
• 13:02
changes, so no word on it. If the third installment is even
• 13:05
still in the plan. It has been confirmed, but we've
• 13:07
heard nothing about it. What we do know is that Doodle
• 13:11
Doodle Cumbernoodle will be in Avengers Doomsday.
• 13:15
So maybe a third movie after Secret Wars we know.
• 13:19
So the thing about Avengers Doomsday is we know he's going
• 13:22
to be there. There's no way he's not.
• 13:24
His name was not put on one of those chairs and when asked why
• 13:27
his name was not in a chair, he said maybe they ran out of
• 13:30
chairs. So it's like, are you just
• 13:33
telling us you're in the movie? It was, I don't know, actors,
• 13:39
man. It could be that Doctor Strange
• 13:41
three may adapt Marvel Comics's intense time runs out storyline
• 13:45
which immediately preceded 2015 Secret Wars event.
• 13:49
This could make the next movie one of the most important multi
• 13:53
saga projects, even though it won't be the Multiverse Saga,
• 13:57
but it it's going to be multiverse and allow Doctor
• 14:01
Strange to continue to change the landscape of the MCU.
• 14:05
So that is all about Doctor Strange in the MCU and I hope
• 14:11
you liked it. So be sure to like and subscribe
• 14:14
so you don't miss any more of this character timeline, my
• 14:18
other character breakdowns, episodes, trailer reactions, all
• 14:23
that really fun stuff I have. And if you're not following, how
• 14:27
are you going to keep up O? With that being said, have a
• 14:30
  marvelous day.
