- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Good afternoon, everyone.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: I always jokingly ask for people to subscribe to our Substack because I want tires
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: for my redneck convertible.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: This is actually an actual appeal this time.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Because we need some money to run an ad on Facebook to get the responses to our survey.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: We have about 51 responses to the survey and can't really release the data just yet,
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: but it is pretty significant that auto technicians are very unhappy.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: We've gotten a little pushback from the industry.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: We are partnering with some online influencers.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: But if we had,
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: say, 10 people sign up for a year-long subscription at $30 a piece, that'd be $300.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: And we could run the survey on a...
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: We could run the survey on an ad on Facebook and get the responses that we need
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: to be able to certify the survey.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the survey is about technician well-being.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: It asks questions about mental health for automotive technicians,
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: and thus far the responses have been overwhelmingly negative.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: That may be a bit biased.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: We may be getting some of the more disgruntled technicians filling out the survey,
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: so we want to run it on Facebook to try to get a good sample size and
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: a good cross-section of technicians, including some who May be happy again.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: We're doing this research.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: It's called,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: the name of the book,
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: the research is for a book called Lost Wizards,
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: How the Automotive Industry Destroys Its Geniuses.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: And where we've released the preliminary research article on ClueAnon a couple of months ago.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: It was called Wizards, A Historical Ethnography of the Auto Shop Floor.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: And we've done a little bit of ethnographic work and we're doing a survey right now.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And like I said earlier,
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: the survey,
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: overwhelmingly negative,
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: surprisingly and shockingly,
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: even for somebody like me who's in the industry and knows that it's bad,
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: it is overwhelmingly and shockingly negative how bad,
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: how unhappy technicians are right now.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: So the appeal is Sign up for the Substack.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: The money from theSubstack will go to running an ad on Facebook to get the
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: number
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: of responses we need to have a certified survey.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: My Substack is only $30 a year,
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: so if we could get $10,
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: we could run a $300 ad, which would give us Probably 150 more responses.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: We have 51 thus far.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: I'm afraid that it might be a little bit biased to disgruntled technicians
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: and would like to get a better cross-section of technicians and we can do
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: that running a Facebook ad.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: So if you are so inclined and you have 30 extra dollars,
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: please sign up for the Mechonomist Substack.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Like I said,
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: I've made this appeal before,
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: but I've always made the appeal for tires for my truck.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: This is actually a real appeal,
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: and it will help us to be able to get some good empirical data to back up this book.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: The book is called Lost Wizards, How the Auto Repair Industry Destroys Its Geniuses.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Thanks a lot.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and please sign up for the Substack.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Peace, y'all.
