Transcript
- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical Crossroads, the
- 0:08Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:13I'm your host, Will Walden. In today's episode, we're going
- 0:16to be talking about Open AI and Sam Altman's chip company.
- 0:22It's a weird story, and in a surprising turn of events, Sam,
- 0:27the CEO of Open AI, Sam Altman, briefly lost his position before
- 0:31being reinstated last month. This incident has brought
- 0:35attention to the complex interplay between Altman's
- 0:37professional role in his personal investment ventures,
- 0:40particularly his involvement with a chip startup named Rain
- 0:44AI. And despite being removed from
- 0:47his position due to alleged uncanded communications,
- 0:50Altman's influence in the tech industry remains pretty
- 0:53significant, particularly in the realm of artificial
- 0:56intelligence. Now, Open AI, a leader in AI
- 0:59research and development, had earlier signed a letter of
- 1:02intent to invest $51 million in neuromorphic Processing units,
- 1:07or NP US, from Rain AI, which are designed to emulate the
- 1:12human brain's functionalities. In.
- 1:14This deal, forged under Altman's leadership at Open AI, raises
- 1:17questions about the potential conflicts of interest, given
- 1:20that Altman also personally invested in Rain AI.
- 1:25Now he invested about $1,000,000 in Rain AI by the way, and
- 1:29founded in 2017, Rain AI is at the forefront of developing NP
- 1:33US that promise to significantly enhance computing power and
- 1:37energy efficiency compared to the current standard GP user
- 1:40graphic processing units. Now these advancements are
- 1:45critical. Edit this out now, these
- 1:47advancements are critical for AI development, particularly for
- 1:51firms like Open AI, which rely heavily on powerful computing
- 1:54hardware for projects such as ChatGPT.
- 1:58Altman's investment in Rain AI, coupled with the deal between
- 2:02Open AI and Rain AI, exemplifies the intricate blend of personal
- 2:06and professional interests that often characterizes Silicon
- 2:10Valley's tech scene, His prior role at Y Combinator.
- 2:13He still has a part in that a prominent startup incubator has
- 2:17positioned him as a key player in tech investments, but this
- 2:20has also led to questions about the appropriateness of his dual
- 2:24roles. Open A is agreement with Rain
- 2:27underscores its pressing need for advanced chip technology to
- 2:30stay ahead of the pack. And despite access to
- 2:33Microsoft's cloud services, Open AI face constraints due to
- 2:37hardware limitations, highlighting the broader
- 2:40challenge in AI development, the need for power, speed,
- 2:43efficiency, and accessible computing resources.
- 2:46Rain AI has not been without its own challenges, though.
- 2:49Recently, the company underwent a leadership change, with its
- 2:53founding CEO Gordon Wilson stepping down to an advisory
- 2:56role. There's transition, along with
- 2:58other internal shifts, could have implications for Reign AI's
- 3:01progress and its dealings with Open AI.
- 3:04Adding to the complexity, Reign AI face scrutiny from the US
- 3:08government due to its investment ties with Saudi Arabia
- 3:11affiliated fund Prosperity 7 Ventures and the forced
- 3:15divestment of this Funds from Reign AI's investment list,
- 3:18driven by national security concerns, may impact the
- 3:22company's ability to bring its novel chip tech to market
- 3:25promptly and beyond. Reign AI Altman has shown
- 3:29interest in further diversifying the AI chip market.
- 3:32His discussions with investors about starting a new chip
- 3:35company reflect the strategic importance of this technology in
- 3:38a is future and the need to reduce reliance on current major
- 3:42suppliers like NVIDIA. The increasing demand for
- 3:45advanced AI chip technology underscores a critical aspect of
- 3:48a is industry growth now? Efficient, powerful, and cost
- 3:52effective chips are essential for the advancement of AI tech,
- 3:55and Altman's involvement in this area is a testament to its
- 3:59importance. And the intertwined
- 4:01relationships between Sam Altman, Open AI and Rain AI
- 4:05provide a unique insight into the dynamics of technological
- 4:08advancement and corporate investment.
- 4:10The outcomes of these relationships will have
- 4:12important implications for the development in the application
- 4:15of AI technologies in the future, particularly in how they
- 4:19are powered and how they are scaled.
- 4:22And as the AI field continues to expand to get more competitive,
- 4:26the focus on developing and securing advanced chip
- 4:29technology will become increasingly crucial.
- 4:33And the narrative involving Altman, Open AI and Rain AI is
- 4:37more than just a story of corporate dealings, It's a
- 4:39reflection of the strategic shifts and technological needs
- 4:43of an industry in its infancy. The story of Sam Altman's brief
- 4:47dismissal and reinstatement at Open AICEO entwined with his
- 4:50investments in Rain. It's a complex picture of the
- 4:53intersections between personal investments, professional
- 4:56responsibilities, and technological advancements in AI
- 5:01And I was the industry moves forward.
- 5:03The resolution of these complexities in the successful
- 5:05development of essential tech like AI chips will play a
- 5:08pivotal role in shaping the future of artificial
- 5:11intelligence. And I'll be bringing you more on
