Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: You should be concerned about the IRD giving social media companies our data
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: ID is giving your data to Facebook. Taxpayers data to Facebook.
- 0:05Speaker 1: That was the headline yesterday. We give them our data
- 0:09Speaker 1: in trust and confidence. Well we don't. Actually we give
- 0:11Speaker 1: them our data because the law says we must file
- 0:14Speaker 1: our tax returns and tell them who we are and
- 0:16Speaker 1: how much we're earning, etc. But perhaps you assume that
- 0:19Speaker 1: the law says that they must keep it to themselves.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Not so, and I think this is a scandal. It
- 0:26Speaker 1: is scandalous, to be honest. When I read the headline,
- 0:29Speaker 1: I thought, oh, IOD must have been hit by one
- 0:31Speaker 1: of those phone scams. You know, they've been cold called
- 0:34Speaker 1: by Nigerian prince and handed over our private data. But no,
- 0:37Speaker 1: The R and Z report says they give Facebook and
- 0:40Speaker 1: the big tech guys some of our information because it's anonymized.
- 0:45Speaker 1: It's hashed what they're calling it hashed, so they can't
- 0:48Speaker 1: see who you are when they hand it over. And
- 0:51Speaker 1: it's only for the purposes of IOD placing ads on
- 0:55Speaker 1: these platforms like Facebook, etc. So don't worry about it. Sorry,
- 0:59Speaker 1: I am, and I reckon. Most Kiwis will hate this.
- 1:02Speaker 1: The reason is pretty simple. It's trust. Do you trust Facebook? No?
- 1:07Speaker 1: Do you believe they will keep your data secure. No,
- 1:12Speaker 1: do you believe they won't marry up your private data
- 1:15Speaker 1: that our government has just handed them on a silver
- 1:18Speaker 1: platter with the profiles they have on you already. No,
- 1:23Speaker 1: No one trusts these guys. I don't want some government
- 1:26Speaker 1: department sending my data to some Silicon Valley server so
- 1:30Speaker 1: that some tech guy can better bug me with intrusive
- 1:34Speaker 1: ads about what undies to buy. I actually think there's
- 1:38Speaker 1: more to this story, and there will be, because they
- 1:41Speaker 1: have a life of their own. It won't just be
- 1:43Speaker 1: the IDA that's doing it. There'll be other government departments,
- 1:45Speaker 1: There'll be other private data. There'll be more of us
- 1:48Speaker 1: affected and luxe and should get ahead of this and
- 1:53Speaker 1: just say let's have some kind of little review, because
- 1:55Speaker 1: otherwise you're going to get these headlines ticking over and
- 1:58Speaker 1: over and over, and I think people will be sick
- 2:02Speaker 1: of it. Also, we need to have as citizens, we
- 2:07Speaker 1: need to have faith that when we give our data
- 2:09Speaker 1: to the government that it is kept secure and safe,
- 2:12Speaker 1: and even a perception that it's not is not good enough.
