Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome Aboard and see Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show, and
- 0:03Speaker 1: we get Dan Hurley on almost a weekly basis. As
- 0:07Speaker 1: the season starts to open up, Husky's got off the
- 0:10Speaker 1: ground at gamble with their opener against the University of
- 0:14Speaker 1: New Haven. The Chargers came in, provided some good competition,
- 0:18Speaker 1: and coach, we're going to go there first because opening
- 0:21Speaker 1: night is opening night. I mean, even though you played
- 0:23Speaker 1: those exhibitions with Boston College and Michigan State, it's still
- 0:28Speaker 1: meaningful when you get in the gym and you know,
- 0:30Speaker 1: this one really counts, is it not.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I mean, I guess maybe a little bit, but to
- 0:39Speaker 2: a very small degree. I think the exhibitions, you know,
- 0:44Speaker 2: you're dealing with the you know that that kind of
- 0:46Speaker 2: nervousness or or excitement that you you know that the
- 0:50Speaker 2: butterflies that you would get on a typical game day.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Maybe it was a little bit more, but no, I
- 0:58Speaker 2: mean it was a it's yeah that the exhibitions I
- 1:04Speaker 2: think have made the opening night just feel like you've
- 1:08Speaker 2: been here, you've done that. So yeah, we can't really
- 1:12Speaker 2: I can't use that as an excuse for you know,
- 1:14Speaker 2: the way that we played, you know, in the game.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I know after the game you talked to Wayne Norman,
- 1:21Speaker 1: my partner. You were very abrupt. You didn't have a
- 1:24Speaker 1: lot to say. You you really didn't want to get
- 1:27Speaker 1: into some of the details of what you were thinking.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I guess.
- 1:31Speaker 1: But now here we are doing the coaches show, so
- 1:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna pin you down. Okay, what was good about
- 1:37Speaker 1: Opening night that you saw the team do?
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I'm usually much better with Wayne, but
- 1:42Speaker 2: I mean I I was reeling a little bit from
- 1:47Speaker 2: you know, from what I you know, had witnessed, you know,
- 1:51Speaker 2: from a defensive standpoint, you know, in particular, and things
- 1:55Speaker 2: you used to seeing, you know, from the team, even
- 1:58Speaker 2: you know last year not being and you know, our
- 2:00Speaker 2: finest year. Uh. You know, I'm not sure that versus uh,
- 2:04Speaker 2: you know, an equivalent opponent. You know, where we were
- 2:08Speaker 2: that bad at at guarding the ball and and in
- 2:12Speaker 2: preparation for the game. It's you got so much respect
- 2:15Speaker 2: for their kind of the offensive system and the way
- 2:18Speaker 2: that they play. And you know, Luke and Camani and
- 2:22Speaker 2: now Mike Nardi, they do an amazing job at you know,
- 2:27Speaker 2: with the scout of of uh, you know, us getting
- 2:32Speaker 2: together and looking at the things that they're going to
- 2:34Speaker 2: run and and repping out how to guard the actions.
- 2:37Speaker 2: So I think we were, like, you know, we we
- 2:40Speaker 2: we guarded a very a very sophisticated offensive system and
- 2:46Speaker 2: literally didn't give up a quality shot guarding all these
- 2:50Speaker 2: different sets that they ran, you know, but you know,
- 2:54Speaker 2: we were scored on in one on one situations at
- 2:57Speaker 2: an alarming rate. And then and there were a lot
- 3:01Speaker 2: of those situations where your teammates offered each other just
- 3:07Speaker 2: zero help. So in situations that we've worked really hard
- 3:11Speaker 2: in the summer, you know, becoming better one on one
- 3:15Speaker 2: defenders and providing more help for each other, we just completely, uh,
- 3:23Speaker 2: we were We were as bad as you could be
- 3:25Speaker 2: on the ball and one on ones, and we offered
- 3:29Speaker 2: each other no help.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yeah, when you had five block shots. I mean, stats
- 3:34Speaker 1: in these games sometimes I'm not going to say they're meaningless,
- 3:37Speaker 1: but they're deceptive a little bit. So to your point,
- 3:41Speaker 1: helping on defense is that on the bigs to get
- 3:45Speaker 1: back there on the back line and reject some stuff.
- 3:47Speaker 1: When a guy gets beat off the dribble, is that
- 3:49Speaker 1: what you're getting at.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I mean, it was the center, sometimes it was the
- 3:53Speaker 2: opposite corner. It was literally you know it literally players
- 4:00Speaker 2: that have been in the program for years, you know,
- 4:02Speaker 2: like you know players Jalen Stewart solo ball, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 2: Alex Caraban. I'm not I'm not talking about you know,
- 4:10Speaker 2: Eric Rabo, who's gonna make mistakes because he's a you know,
- 4:13Speaker 2: he's a freshman center and their centers playing out on
- 4:16Speaker 2: the perimeter and kind of dragging him away from the basket,
- 4:19Speaker 2: and you know, he didn't see the opportunities for him
- 4:22Speaker 2: to leave him and go and protect a rim. I mean,
- 4:25Speaker 2: he's a young player, but they have veteran players that
- 4:28Speaker 2: now listen. You could also say to yourself, you know,
- 4:32Speaker 2: based on you know, the resources invested base, based on
- 4:36Speaker 2: the fact that we're a top five program in a country,
- 4:39Speaker 2: that we should be able to win more one on
- 4:42Speaker 2: one battles, you know versus you know, New Haven who's
- 4:46Speaker 2: in their first year of Division one basketball. Uh. You know,
- 4:49Speaker 2: our our wings and our guards should be able to
- 4:52Speaker 2: guard their yard effectively and not get driven in a
- 4:56Speaker 2: straight line. But there are also times where a teammate
- 4:59Speaker 2: could to help the teammate and play team defense. So
- 5:03Speaker 2: we didn't do either. And they were veteran players involved
- 5:07Speaker 2: in getting scored on and involved in not getting helped.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Dan Hurley with US the Ukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show
- 5:14Speaker 1: talking about New Haven and the Chargers individually. Listen, I
- 5:19Speaker 1: don't care about preseason predictions for other schools, to be honest,
- 5:22Speaker 1: it doesn't matter. But they were picked last in their
- 5:25Speaker 1: conference obviously Division one for the first time. You don't
- 5:28Speaker 1: know what they've got. But I was pretty impressive that
- 5:30Speaker 1: they had two or three individual players who were quality guys.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Made Andre Pasha, That dude played thirty five minutes, he
- 5:38Speaker 1: scored seventeen points. He did some things on the court
- 5:42Speaker 1: that were pretty impressive.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, we're always going to get, you know,
- 5:48Speaker 2: the best version of anyone that we play. You know,
- 5:51Speaker 2: it's when you played basketball at Yukon, that's what you're
- 5:53Speaker 2: going to be dealing with. And yeah, I mean what
- 5:58Speaker 2: happened was, you know, we again like you you know,
- 6:00Speaker 2: you're you're you're well prepared, you guard the sets. But
- 6:04Speaker 2: then I think what they started to discover was that
- 6:08Speaker 2: you know that we individually, right at this particular juncture,
- 6:12Speaker 2: we don't have uh, you know, the level of individual defender.
- 6:16Speaker 2: You know, we don't have the guys right now the
- 6:20Speaker 2: the Andre Jackson's, uh, the Steph Castle's, the Tristan Newton's.
- 6:26Speaker 2: You know, the guys on the perimeter, Nahim Alin, even
- 6:29Speaker 2: guys like Jordan Hawkins. I mean Jordan Hawkins would be
- 6:32Speaker 2: our best perimeter defender on this team. That's how far
- 6:36Speaker 2: we have to go. Yeah, with our perimeter defense right now.
- 6:39Speaker 2: It's pride, It's it's smarts, Uh, it's technique in fundamentals,
- 6:44Speaker 2: it's will, but it's also it's alarming.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Dan Hurley, willis youkon men's basketball coaches, You'll back
- 6:52Speaker 1: in a moment here on Liirfield
