- 0:09Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:12Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Bars.
- 0:15Speaker 2: And Lazarre.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Hello, everybody nailed it? Joined us always buy our Bara.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Bars. Jam a square
- 0:27Speaker 3: hole into a round peg. Because your offense is an
- 0:30Speaker 3: under center offense, you.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Can't jam a hole into a peg. So it's nice pegging.
- 0:34Speaker 3: A hole peg into a hole. Yeah, he said, peg,
- 0:38Speaker 3: square peg, round hole.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Yeah there are you just like the worst at preschool?
- 0:42Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 0:43Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 0:43Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, come on, just making sure you took literally
- 0:46Speaker 1: the whole toye hitting the one piece.
- 0:50Speaker 3: I like how you ended my rant with that.
- 0:53Speaker 1: We're gonna we're gonna cover triangles today now that we
- 0:55Speaker 1: were squares and circles down.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Maybe you know it was really hard for me. Was
- 0:59Speaker 3: was coloring between the lines. I could not do that.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You know what I was bad with two?
- 1:04Speaker 3: I was like, this is not all twenty two? Like
- 1:06Speaker 3: where's the football?
- 1:08Speaker 1: You know what I was bad with two? Like art class?
- 1:11Speaker 1: The glue bottle. Yeah, I would just make it like
- 1:12Speaker 1: I had to use a glues stick. They wouldn't let
- 1:14Speaker 1: me use the glue bottle because I made such a mess.
- 1:16Speaker 3: See we were we were just you know, we were
- 1:18Speaker 3: ahead of our time. Like now being like people like
- 1:21Speaker 3: us is like they know what to do with kids
- 1:23Speaker 3: like us now. Back then they did it and they
- 1:26Speaker 3: were just like, I.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Don't know what that means.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I want you to qualify what that means.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I'm just saying that, you know, somebody like me, I
- 1:33Speaker 3: was not good at school. No, I was terrible at school,
- 1:37Speaker 3: but I was good at what I liked with like football,
- 1:42Speaker 3: you know, but I'm not good at like the traditional
- 1:45Speaker 3: school stuff. And I feel like now they realize, like
- 1:48Speaker 3: some kids just that they're not BookSmart.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Well you know how there's people that, like remember the
- 1:52Speaker 1: kids in school that would be like, no, I know it,
- 1:54Speaker 1: I'm just a bad test taker. And then people would
- 1:56Speaker 1: be like, oh so you're no no, no, But like
- 1:58Speaker 1: I remember like hearing that and somebody be like, oh,
- 2:00Speaker 1: so you're bad of the thing that measures how much
- 2:02Speaker 1: you know, so you're not It's like, yeah, no, I'm
- 2:04Speaker 1: a bad testinger because I don't know the stuff. Yeah
- 2:07Speaker 1: that's why. But I just also didn't try you put
- 2:10Speaker 1: like you know, we used to have was like you'd
- 2:13Speaker 1: get like sixty math problems in a minute. Yeah, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: I never could finish it. This isn't like elementary school.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Never could finish it. Put the fifty three players on
- 2:21Speaker 1: the Patriots roster give me a minute. I I could
- 2:23Speaker 1: have gotten all those. I'd be done with time.
- 2:25Speaker 3: To spare it exactly. That's that's exactly my point. Thank
- 2:28Speaker 3: you for saying.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I'm not saying now, I'm saying, like back obviously I
- 2:30Speaker 1: could do it now, but even back then I could
- 2:32Speaker 1: do it well.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Uh Hey, Patriots fans, if you want to see Toyota's
- 2:36Speaker 3: best offers, including those not seen on TV, go to
- 2:39Speaker 3: buy at toyota dot com. It's Tyota's official website for
- 2:41Speaker 3: deals for the official vehicle of the New England Patriots.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Tyota Let's go places and easy to drink, easy to enjoy,
- 2:47Speaker 3: but like the official beer sponsor of the New England Patriots.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Hello everybody, Nice to see everyone. That was an interesting open.
- 2:55Speaker 3: I like I like that though, nice cold open for
- 2:58Speaker 3: us today. But Evan Lazar Alexar Patriots catch twenty two
- 3:01Speaker 3: with you for the next couple of hours here and
- 3:04Speaker 3: we're taking calls. We'll get the emails set up here
- 3:07Speaker 3: in a second. As well, so call on in at
- 3:10Speaker 3: eight five to five Pats five hundred. We got a
- 3:12Speaker 3: lot to talk about, though, and I want to start
- 3:15Speaker 3: by looking back as we normally do, and looking specifically
- 3:19Speaker 3: at Drake May, of course at Shocker and the place.
- 3:23Speaker 3: I want to start with Drake May because on Tuesday,
- 3:27Speaker 3: we had our typical game recap unfiltered on Tuesday, and
- 3:31Speaker 3: I'm sure a lot of people heard it. I was
- 3:34Speaker 3: quite complimentary. I'm sure as you could imagine, I was
- 3:37Speaker 3: very excited. And when you come off a game like Sunday,
- 3:42Speaker 3: where I will tell you point blank, the most exciting
- 3:47Speaker 3: moment of Patriots football in probably three years was Drake
- 3:52Speaker 3: May's touchdown pass to Kashan Boody before halftime, Like that
- 3:55Speaker 3: was the first time in probably since Mac Jones's rookie year,
- 3:59Speaker 3: at least maybe even since Brady where I was like,
- 4:03Speaker 3: holy crap, like you know that is a throw, Like
- 4:06Speaker 3: that is a franchise quarterback throw. And it was exciting.
- 4:09Speaker 3: And I watched the film on Monday, and that was exciting.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Now that a couple of days have passed and you
- 4:16Speaker 3: kind of turn the page and all that, I think
- 4:19Speaker 3: there's a lot of conversations about okay, are we just
- 4:24Speaker 3: kind of glossing over the three turnovers, the two picks,
- 4:29Speaker 3: the fumble, some of the misthrows that he had in
- 4:32Speaker 3: this game, and highlighting just the positives because we're starving
- 4:36Speaker 3: for positives with this team, especially on the offensive side
- 4:38Speaker 3: of the ball, and putting our heads in the sand
- 4:41Speaker 3: and just kind of ignoring the negatives because it's more fun. Frankly,
- 4:45Speaker 3: it's more exciting as a fan. It's more promising as
- 4:49Speaker 3: a fan. But we talked about this in the draft,
- 4:53Speaker 3: and this is like a philosophical belief of mine when
- 4:55Speaker 3: it comes to quarterbacks. I'm gonna try my best articulate
- 4:59Speaker 3: this better, and I did in my original point about preschool.
- 5:02Speaker 3: But I would rather the quarterback where he checks the
- 5:08Speaker 3: physical tools box, and I feel like he checks generally
- 5:14Speaker 3: checks the mental box of his eyes are in the
- 5:17Speaker 3: right places, he's making the right reads, he's making good decisions,
- 5:21Speaker 3: and he has all these physical tools. I would rather
- 5:24Speaker 3: work with that young quarterback. Then I'll give you two examples.
- 5:28Speaker 3: A quarterback that has all the physical tools, that looks
- 5:31Speaker 3: great in shorts, that looks great at his pro day,
- 5:33Speaker 3: but you get him on a field in an NFL
- 5:35Speaker 3: game and he can't see the defense. He just doesn't
- 5:37Speaker 3: know what he's looking at. Yes, I knew you were
- 5:40Speaker 3: going to know my comps already. So I would rather
- 5:43Speaker 3: have a quarterback like Drake May who checks the physical
- 5:46Speaker 3: tools box but also seems to have a general understanding
- 5:49Speaker 3: of how to read coverage, where to go with the
- 5:52Speaker 3: with the football, how to read out progressions, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff, than as Zach Wilson, who's
- 5:58Speaker 3: just really good in shorts right, looks great at the combine,
- 6:01Speaker 3: looks great at his throwing sessions against air. I would
- 6:04Speaker 3: also rather have Drake May over a mac Jones type
- 6:09Speaker 3: who doesn't have the physical skill set necessary to truly
- 6:15Speaker 3: be a franchise altering guy, but might have some of
- 6:18Speaker 3: the reads and the decision making and the mental side
- 6:21Speaker 3: of it down. I truly believe that Drake May is
- 6:27Speaker 3: only going to get better because the things that he
- 6:29Speaker 3: needs to get better at are things I'm willing to
- 6:33Speaker 3: be patient with him on. It's details, right, it's footwork,
- 6:37Speaker 3: it's throwing mechanics. It's not that he looks totally out
- 6:42Speaker 3: of place playing the position. For one reason or another,
- 6:45Speaker 3: there were the concerning part about the film, if you
- 6:49Speaker 3: want to go concern was that the what I you know,
- 6:54Speaker 3: we call sprays or like inaccurate throws or wild misses.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Those were all over his film at North Carolina. And
- 7:02Speaker 3: it's not fixed yet. Now that doesn't mean it won't
- 7:06Speaker 3: be in two years, right, But at this point in time,
- 7:10Speaker 3: the Aeron throws were the most of the negative grades
- 7:13Speaker 3: that I had, you know, graded plays I had for
- 7:16Speaker 3: him were misthrows, not misreads, but wild errant passes, like
- 7:23Speaker 3: the first interception to Pop Douglas where he just throws
- 7:26Speaker 3: a ten yards over his head. That is going to
- 7:29Speaker 3: be prevalent for him. But now that we have this
- 7:32Speaker 3: archetype out there, of a Drake may type, we have
- 7:37Speaker 3: seen accuracy developed. It used to be like an old
- 7:40Speaker 3: quarterback thing back in the day twenty twenty five years ago,
- 7:44Speaker 3: was that you can't teach accuracy, that that's just something
- 7:46Speaker 3: that quarterbacks naturally have. Now I feel like we have
- 7:50Speaker 3: enough quarterback We have enough evidence that a Josh Allen,
- 7:55Speaker 3: a Jordan Love, even a Justin Herbert coming out had
- 7:58Speaker 3: some of these concerns. Those are just three examples. You know,
- 8:01Speaker 3: Patrick mahomes right, and I hate picking up Mahomes because
- 8:04Speaker 3: he's Mahomes. But this type of archetype, we have enough
- 8:08Speaker 3: examples that you can fine tune mechanics and you can
- 8:12Speaker 3: develop accuracy and eventually, hopefully he instead of having five
- 8:17Speaker 3: or six sprays a game, that becomes two or three,
- 8:19Speaker 3: and then eventually it becomes one or two and then
- 8:21Speaker 3: hopefully eventually it becomes zero. Right now we're still at
- 8:24Speaker 3: half a dozen. That's too many. But I still would
- 8:27Speaker 3: rather work with this type of quarterback.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think to your last point, something
- 8:31Speaker 1: you hit on. Their accuracy and mechanics are tied together, right,
- 8:34Speaker 1: And that's why there's been this change. It used to
- 8:36Speaker 1: be a guy would go out there either could throw
- 8:39Speaker 1: the ballery couldn't, and you were more so coaching how
- 8:42Speaker 1: to read the field, how to you know, make changes
- 8:45Speaker 1: at all. Like you weren't coaching the actual mechanics of
- 8:49Speaker 1: the position. The coaching was pretty much all done on
- 8:51Speaker 1: the mental side. Now you have teams in house, and
- 8:54Speaker 1: then also guys like I didn't mean to do this,
- 8:56Speaker 1: but guys like Tom House, right, who are to house
- 9:00Speaker 1: in house to house Tomhouse. Oh yeah, I didn't need
- 9:04Speaker 1: to set that up that way. You guys like Jordan Palmer, Tomhouse.
- 9:07Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean accuracy is I don't know that
- 9:11Speaker 1: it's entirely a product of mechanics, but I would say
- 9:14Speaker 1: that it's significant slice of the pie when it comes
- 9:16Speaker 1: to accuracy is due to mechanics. So yeah, they'll clean
- 9:20Speaker 1: that up. But this is something that I talk about
- 9:22Speaker 1: with players a lot in the draft, not just at
- 9:23Speaker 1: the quarterback position. I mean, there's there's two kinds of traits.
- 9:26Speaker 1: You can really break pretty much any trait in his
- 9:29Speaker 1: game down to one of two things. It's either natural
- 9:33Speaker 1: or coachable. There are some traits that guys have that
- 9:36Speaker 1: you're born with it or or not. And that can
- 9:38Speaker 1: be physical traits, right That can be speed, that can
- 9:41Speaker 1: be size, that can be you know, agility. It can
- 9:45Speaker 1: also be mental things like do you have that dog
- 9:47Speaker 1: in you or not? Like that's not you can't coach
- 9:49Speaker 1: somebody to love football, you can't coach somebody to be tenacious.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And then there's coachable stuff, you know, things like mechanics,
- 9:58Speaker 1: things like like field vision things, field awareness like things
- 10:01Speaker 1: like that, and just because sometimes there's guys that have
- 10:04Speaker 1: all won not the other and that can go both ways.
- 10:06Speaker 1: And I don't think either one's just qualifying. But for me,
- 10:09Speaker 1: as a general rule of thumb, give me the athletes
- 10:12Speaker 1: that love football. I'd rather turn an athlete who loves
- 10:14Speaker 1: football into a football player, right then try to turn
- 10:18Speaker 1: a guy who knows exactly what to do but doesn't
- 10:21Speaker 1: have the physical ability to necessarily do it as consistently
- 10:23Speaker 1: as he needs to. Some of those guys work out.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Like there's some guys at the wide receiver position that maybe,
- 10:29Speaker 1: like throughout the history of the game, not just right now,
- 10:31Speaker 1: that aren't like nth tier athletes, but have still had
- 10:34Speaker 1: very successful careers because they're so technically sound. There's some
- 10:38Speaker 1: linemen too that maybe like aren't the biggest, strongest guys,
- 10:41Speaker 1: but their technique is so good that they make it work.
- 10:45Speaker 1: But again, as a role thumb for me especially, you know,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and you talk about this with Drake May, the things
- 10:50Speaker 1: that Drake May can do at a high level, and
- 10:52Speaker 1: you compare them to Mac Shown's right, there are things.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I know people are gonna roll their eyes at this,
- 10:57Speaker 1: but coming out of college, there are things Mac Jones
- 10:58Speaker 1: was doing at high level. There were things you can
- 11:00Speaker 1: coach somebody to do. The things that he in theory
- 11:03Speaker 1: needed to get better at. He just wasn't going to
- 11:05Speaker 1: get better at because it was stuff that you're either
- 11:07Speaker 1: born with you or nine. R. Drake May has a
- 11:10Speaker 1: lot of natural things that you can't coach, you can't teach,
- 11:13Speaker 1: you can't develop in the on the practice field, in
- 11:16Speaker 1: the weight room, in the film room, whatever that. There's
- 11:19Speaker 1: still some other stuff that needs to be rounded out.
- 11:21Speaker 1: But what's become very clear is those physical traits that
- 11:26Speaker 1: you know, you drool over on the film and a
- 11:27Speaker 1: lot of people will say, well, who he plays in
- 11:29Speaker 1: the ACC. You know it's not gonna look the same
- 11:32Speaker 1: in the NFL. No, those all translate to the NFL.
- 11:36Speaker 1: That's what's been clear to this point. Now, it's just
- 11:38Speaker 1: like you said, the mechanics, seeing the field better, things
- 11:41Speaker 1: like that, that comes with time. It's not you shouldn't
- 11:44Speaker 1: expect it to happen right away. It's not going to
- 11:46Speaker 1: happen right away. It does need to happen eventually. I'm talking.
- 11:49Speaker 1: You know, you gave two years. I think you want
- 11:51Speaker 1: to see most of the development happen over the first
- 11:53Speaker 1: two years and then you really start honing in on things.
- 11:56Speaker 1: But I think that to me is the biggest takeaway
- 11:58Speaker 1: from Drake May not just in this game, but to
- 12:00Speaker 1: this point, the physical tools, the mental, the mental and
- 12:05Speaker 1: physical natural tools are real, They translate and they play
- 12:10Speaker 1: at the NFL level.
- 12:11Speaker 3: You use a word that I like, disqualifying. I still
- 12:15Speaker 3: haven't seen anything whether it was on his college film,
- 12:20Speaker 3: training camp, preseason, and now one career start under his belt.
- 12:25Speaker 3: I still haven't seen anything from Drake May where I
- 12:28Speaker 3: say that's disqualifying, like that is he is going to
- 12:32Speaker 3: fail if that doesn't improve, or to your point, well
- 12:37Speaker 3: about like a mac Jones type, he just doesn't. He
- 12:40Speaker 3: wasn't born with the arm talent. It's just not gonna
- 12:43Speaker 3: that's going to be disco.
- 12:44Speaker 1: You're push back on that. I do think there are
- 12:46Speaker 1: things like you can't turn the ball over three times again, Yep,
- 12:49Speaker 1: that's disqualifying.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Right, But why was he turning it over one? We'll
- 12:54Speaker 3: get to those on him. Yeah, we'll get to it
- 12:56Speaker 3: one and a half through head.
- 12:57Speaker 1: But I guess here's my point, Like, there are things
- 13:00Speaker 1: he needs to get better at. There are things that
- 13:02Speaker 1: if they become patterns, he's not the guy. But all
- 13:06Speaker 1: of those things are things that like realistically and regularly
- 13:11Speaker 1: guys improve at once they get into the league, Like
- 13:13Speaker 1: accuracy improves, pocket presence improves. Let's just seeing more football.
- 13:18Speaker 1: So the Tom Brady answers to the test, as he
- 13:20Speaker 1: gets more answers, he's going to improve in that regard.
- 13:23Speaker 1: It's not that I didn't see anything like. It's not
- 13:26Speaker 1: that I looked at it and said, if he plays
- 13:28Speaker 1: that game every week, they have a stud No. But
- 13:31Speaker 1: I look at it and I say, all right, The
- 13:32Speaker 1: things I'm most concerned about are things I've seen a
- 13:35Speaker 1: lot of quarterbacks improve on over their first two years
- 13:39Speaker 1: in the league. And assuming that they can get him
- 13:41Speaker 1: on that path, then there are some other special tools
- 13:44Speaker 1: in there to build around.
- 13:45Speaker 3: So I want to I want to go we went,
- 13:49Speaker 3: we went macro. Now I want to go micro with this.
- 13:52Speaker 3: And I understand that, you know, if you want to
- 13:54Speaker 3: go read it on Patriots dot com and listen to
- 13:57Speaker 3: my commentary watching the film back, that's the visual side
- 14:01Speaker 3: of it is on and after further review on Patriots
- 14:04Speaker 3: dot com. But I broke up the plays into plus
- 14:08Speaker 3: and minus plays, and I'll just say this off the top.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Everybody has a different criteria, right, so I'm probably not
- 14:17Speaker 3: as harsh of a greater as some other people are,
- 14:19Speaker 3: and that's totally fine. I don't want this to be
- 14:21Speaker 3: like a shot at anybody or anything like that. But
- 14:24Speaker 3: I want to go through some of the plus plays
- 14:26Speaker 3: that I had on here that were particularly I was
- 14:31Speaker 3: the word exciting to me, and then I want to
- 14:33Speaker 3: go through some of the minuses that you were just
- 14:35Speaker 3: talking about a little bit as well.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Can we start here because I'm curious. I just want
- 14:38Speaker 1: to ask you this because I feel like there's like
- 14:40Speaker 1: three or four different answers to this question that are
- 14:42Speaker 1: going around to regularly. What was the most impressive throw
- 14:47Speaker 1: he made or the most eye popping throw or the
- 14:50Speaker 1: most encouraging throw in your mind in that game?
- 14:53Speaker 3: It's a good question, I would I would say the
- 14:59Speaker 3: best throw is still the booty touchdown. But that's a
- 15:02Speaker 3: throw that I guess we knew he had in his bag,
- 15:04Speaker 3: So I understand that side that piece of it. I've
- 15:07Speaker 3: heard that and I understand that piece of it. I
- 15:09Speaker 3: would actually say that the throw that encouraged me the most,
- 15:12Speaker 3: and this was I was gonna go here first so
- 15:14Speaker 3: we can just talk about it was the drive starter
- 15:18Speaker 3: at the two you know, under two minutes at the
- 15:21Speaker 3: end of the half to Pop Douglas, because that's a
- 15:26Speaker 3: throw that is his fourth read in the progression. He
- 15:28Speaker 3: starts on the left hand side, goes through two reads
- 15:31Speaker 3: over there, comes back backside. When he comes back backside
- 15:34Speaker 3: on that progression, he's actually like really supposed to hit
- 15:37Speaker 3: that backside dig route that's also not there, and so
- 15:40Speaker 3: he progresses all the way to the fourth read across
- 15:42Speaker 3: the field to Douglas. Not only is that showing some
- 15:46Speaker 3: mental you know, strength right there by progressing you know,
- 15:50Speaker 3: in a full few of progression, but you also watch
- 15:54Speaker 3: him throw from a muddy pocket with people collapsing around
- 15:58Speaker 3: him and people at his feet. From an air distance perspective,
- 16:03Speaker 3: next next gen track that as a twenty six yard
- 16:06Speaker 3: throw coming across the field at the Douglas. So you
- 16:10Speaker 3: have the mental side of it, if you are into
- 16:12Speaker 3: that sort of thing, you also have the physical side
- 16:15Speaker 3: of There just aren't that many quarterbacks that can make
- 16:18Speaker 3: that throw. Like, there's a lot of quarterbacks that try
- 16:21Speaker 3: that throw and it's a pick six the other direction.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Kendrick Borne talked about this earlier today that when
- 16:26Speaker 1: they get into these scramble drill modes, you're taught to
- 16:28Speaker 1: run with the quarterback. And what that means is he's
- 16:31Speaker 1: rolling right, you break off your route, you go right.
- 16:33Speaker 1: If he's left, you break on ther right. What he
- 16:36Speaker 1: said is with Drake May and he's whatever. They're not
- 16:39Speaker 1: coaching it this way, but it's kind of just a
- 16:41Speaker 1: situational thing, you know, in a moment. And this happened
- 16:43Speaker 1: on the Hunter Henry completion, which I'm sure we'll get to.
- 16:46Speaker 1: You can break away from Drake May on the scrambles
- 16:50Speaker 1: and still be in the play, yeah, because he has
- 16:53Speaker 1: the ability to make those throws, which to your point.
- 16:57Speaker 3: I don't remember if Pop broke away from him on
- 16:59Speaker 3: that throw, kind of drifts into the sideline like a
- 17:02Speaker 3: like really nice job by him. It's zone coverage, and
- 17:04Speaker 3: he kind of feels that that zone defenders, like because
- 17:08Speaker 3: Drake's eyes are to the left and into the middle
- 17:10Speaker 3: of the field, so the zone defender kind of drifts
- 17:13Speaker 3: in that way, and so Pop just naturally kind of
- 17:16Speaker 3: like gravitates off of it and you know, moves out
- 17:19Speaker 3: into the open space, and I just I love the read.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Like obviously the progression is awesome and a progression under
- 17:28Speaker 3: some pressure too, right, but more importantly, that is just
- 17:32Speaker 3: a throw that the Patriots have not had in their bag, Like,
- 17:35Speaker 3: that's not something that the Patriots, that was not offense
- 17:38Speaker 3: for the Patriots before this, you know, putting Drake may
- 17:42Speaker 3: in the starting lineup, so that gets the whole drive started,
- 17:45Speaker 3: it wouldn't have been a drive. It wouldn't have ended
- 17:47Speaker 3: in a forty yard touchdown to Kaishan Boodie if he
- 17:50Speaker 3: doesn't hit the twenty two yard er. What's your favorite throw?
- 17:54Speaker 1: So I thought the most encouraging one was the touchdown
- 17:57Speaker 1: to Pop late in the game. And I mean, first
- 18:00Speaker 1: of all, like it, it's a good throw. He puts
- 18:03Speaker 1: some zip on the ball, there's some distance on it,
- 18:05Speaker 1: he hits some right and stride. But it's more with
- 18:08Speaker 1: that throw. It's more taking that throw in the context
- 18:11Speaker 1: of the whole game in the season, because one he
- 18:14Speaker 1: missed that throw or at least a very similar throw
- 18:18Speaker 1: twice before. The first pick he threw was on a
- 18:22Speaker 1: similar concept. And then I think it was like the
- 18:25Speaker 1: drive before, it's it goes as a completion but should
- 18:30Speaker 1: have had the same touchdown. But it was behind right
- 18:32Speaker 1: like you said, and Pope's kind of jump up and
- 18:34Speaker 1: grab it. And he gets tackled. So you go from
- 18:37Speaker 1: it's picked off to it gets there, but it's out
- 18:42Speaker 1: of the frame of the body to like perfect like
- 18:46Speaker 1: Pop does not break shrine, it's right there, and that
- 18:50Speaker 1: is all right. Kids, got a short memory. He's learning
- 18:54Speaker 1: on the fly, he's adjusting, he's improving on the fly
- 18:57Speaker 1: like you. I'm a big short memory guy when it
- 18:59Speaker 1: comes to quarterbacks that you cannot dwell on mistakes. You
- 19:02Speaker 1: have to learn from mistakes. And the other thing is,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and I talked about this going into the game. For
- 19:07Speaker 1: this offense to hit whatever its ceiling is, and maybe
- 19:11Speaker 1: the ceiling is relatively lower because of other things, but
- 19:14Speaker 1: you still want to hit the ceiling regardless where the
- 19:16Speaker 1: ceiling's at. Pop Douglas needs to be a part of
- 19:18Speaker 1: this offense for it to hit its ceiling. Because the
- 19:20Speaker 1: deep ball, even with Drake May, there're gonna be limitations
- 19:24Speaker 1: on the deep ball because of the protection and you're
- 19:25Speaker 1: just not gonna have time to access it. So for
- 19:27Speaker 1: explosive players are gonna have to be guys making plays
- 19:30Speaker 1: with ball in their hands, which Pop Douglas is better
- 19:33Speaker 1: than anybody else on this offense. Jacoby and Pop never
- 19:36Speaker 1: really seem to get on the same page, and it
- 19:39Speaker 1: hurt the offense as a whole. You see what happens
- 19:42Speaker 1: now when the quarterback is looking regularly to Pop Douglas
- 19:45Speaker 1: and on a play like that, like that kind of
- 19:47Speaker 1: thing that cross or to Pop Douglas needs to be
- 19:50Speaker 1: a core part of the Patriots offense. So that's why
- 19:52Speaker 1: I love that throat, not just because it was a
- 19:54Speaker 1: good throw itself, but it's like it's so many boxes
- 19:56Speaker 1: you're looking for big termari short memory improvement, getting on
- 20:00Speaker 1: the same page as a keywide receiver. Like I just
- 20:03Speaker 1: thought that throw. Give me that, Like, give me that
- 20:06Speaker 1: once a game, you know what I mean.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Oh yeah, like that.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Not not that I'm saying, don't give me the Kishaw
- 20:11Speaker 1: Booney throw once a game, but that's a play that's
- 20:13Speaker 1: realistically going to be available to you one, two, three
- 20:17Speaker 1: times a game.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 1: And if you can hit it right, they ran it
- 20:20Speaker 1: three times, they hit it once. If you can start
- 20:22Speaker 1: hitting that play twice a game, like, you're in great shape.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Yeah. So I agree with so much of what you
- 20:27Speaker 3: said because that throw and we talk about this and
- 20:32Speaker 3: we kind of joke about it a lot. Unfiltered Paul
- 20:35Speaker 3: has this thing where it's like, does it look like
- 20:36Speaker 3: an NFL play?
- 20:37Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 20:38Speaker 3: Right? Does it like not like this like discombobulated and
- 20:41Speaker 3: you just kind of stumbled or lucked into a completion? Right?
- 20:46Speaker 1: Like?
- 20:46Speaker 3: Does it look like an actual NFL play the way
- 20:49Speaker 3: that they drew draw it up in the playbook and
- 20:52Speaker 3: on the whiteboard or whatever cliche you want to use.
- 20:54Speaker 3: And that Pop Douglas touchdown was the receiver beating his
- 20:59Speaker 3: man and man to man coverage, the protection holding up
- 21:02Speaker 3: long enough for Drake May to get the ball out
- 21:04Speaker 3: against the blitz and Drake May just putting it on
- 21:07Speaker 3: his receiver and stride for a touchdown Like that was
- 21:10Speaker 3: NFL offense. And one of the things that I didn't
- 21:14Speaker 3: necessarily care if I saw it, but didn't want to
- 21:17Speaker 3: see was like every single throw being the Hunter Henry
- 21:20Speaker 3: offscript play because I know to see that. No, No,
- 21:24Speaker 3: I wanted to see it once or twice. But if
- 21:26Speaker 3: it was, if all of his production was just that
- 21:29Speaker 3: then and all the actual like in rhythm instructure stuff
- 21:33Speaker 3: was messy, I would have been like, all right, well
- 21:35Speaker 3: that how replicable is that going to be? The touchdown
- 21:39Speaker 3: of Booty the throw to Pop Douglas on the other touchdown,
- 21:43Speaker 3: even the touchdown passed to Hunter Henry, which I know
- 21:45Speaker 3: is to an open receiver like on on sort of
- 21:47Speaker 3: a bus. But like those are NFL plays Like that
- 21:50Speaker 3: looked like NFL offense and that was super encouraging. There
- 21:54Speaker 3: was a couple of other plays I wanted to bring
- 21:56Speaker 3: up on the plus side, and then we'll get to
- 21:57Speaker 3: some of the minuses. We can talk about the you know,
- 22:00Speaker 3: I just mentioned it, so we'll just talk about it. Yeah,
- 22:03Speaker 3: the Henry offscript plays. We all were waiting for that one, right,
- 22:06Speaker 3: one sort of scramble drill improv type of play. What
- 22:10Speaker 3: And I posted it on on my my x account.
- 22:13Speaker 3: I posted on my Twitter What I love so much
- 22:15Speaker 3: about the offscript play to Henry is that he tries
- 22:20Speaker 3: to play in structure and on time and his reads
- 22:23Speaker 3: are are covered right, so he actually doesn't force the
- 22:27Speaker 3: ball into coverage. He almost gets covered two trapped on
- 22:30Speaker 3: one side of the field, Like a lot of young
- 22:32Speaker 3: quarterbacks make that throw thinking that it's like, you know,
- 22:35Speaker 3: this the corner is is going up the field, you know,
- 22:38Speaker 3: whether it's like you know, cover three or quarters or
- 22:40Speaker 3: something like that, and they have the flat he gets
- 22:43Speaker 3: trapped on the on that side of the field, and
- 22:45Speaker 3: he doesn't throw into the trap. He pulls it down
- 22:47Speaker 3: and says, oh wait, that's not open, and then he
- 22:50Speaker 3: goes ahead and makes a play. So it's not again,
- 22:52Speaker 3: it's not like instantaneous. I don't know what I'm looking at.
- 22:54Speaker 3: I'm just gonna start running around. That was like a
- 22:57Speaker 3: true I'm gonna go through my progression. I gonna stay
- 23:00Speaker 3: in the pocket. Okay, there's nothing there. Now, let's go
- 23:03Speaker 3: make a play. And that was really encouraging to me
- 23:06Speaker 3: on that one. I would say that late in the game,
- 23:11Speaker 3: and I know that this is kind of in garbage
- 23:13Speaker 3: time and whatever, but he had two really good throws
- 23:16Speaker 3: late in the game. One of them was Takeishan Bouti
- 23:20Speaker 3: on a corner route where he kind of pump fakes
- 23:22Speaker 3: the corner off and throws the corner out. That type
- 23:25Speaker 3: of stuff, you know I mentioned earlier, the pop play
- 23:27Speaker 3: before the half, the progression, the full field progression, pump
- 23:31Speaker 3: faking or like manipulating zone coverages and like moving defenders
- 23:35Speaker 3: with either pumps or your eyes or your kid whatever
- 23:38Speaker 3: your body language, like whatever it is. That's advanced stuff
- 23:41Speaker 3: like that's not like rookies don't just roll out of
- 23:43Speaker 3: bed and do that kind of stuff already. So his
- 23:46Speaker 3: feel for Okay, I have cover two, I have the flat,
- 23:49Speaker 3: and I have the corner. If I pump to the
- 23:51Speaker 3: flat and I get the corner to jump the flat,
- 23:53Speaker 3: I'm gonna rip the corner behind his head like that is.
- 23:57Speaker 3: That's a real advanced NFL trow that I'm gonna you know,
- 24:02Speaker 3: I'm gonna to victory lap a little bit. There was
- 24:04Speaker 3: a lot of people that told me that he wasn't
- 24:06Speaker 3: capable yet of doing those types of things.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I mean, how do we know he was. He would
- 24:11Speaker 1: have gone out there week one and done that. I'm
- 24:12Speaker 1: not saying, hell I do that, you know me?
- 24:14Speaker 3: I would. I think he was doing that in North Carolina.
- 24:18Speaker 3: I'm just saying that the sit Drake May crowd, the
- 24:22Speaker 3: especially from like the national media, the sit Drake May
- 24:25Speaker 3: crowd was telling me that this is a raw, just
- 24:29Speaker 3: physical marvel, but he doesn't know how to play quarterback.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Yeah, to be clear, let me just clear it. There
- 24:34Speaker 1: were because I've been getting this this week, there were
- 24:36Speaker 1: two different sit Drake May crowds. Yes, there was sit
- 24:39Speaker 1: Drake May. Because he's a project. Yeah, and there was
- 24:43Speaker 1: sit Drake May because the rest of the team isn't ready.
- 24:45Speaker 1: So I'm not to specify which crowd you're talking to him.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I'm talking to the the sit Drake May because he's
- 24:50Speaker 1: a project. Okay, I'll just name names, like I'm talking
- 24:53Speaker 1: about the Dan Orlovsky's that were saying that this guy
- 24:55Speaker 1: needs to sit for three years because he doesn't know
- 24:58Speaker 1: how to play quarterback.
- 24:58Speaker 3: He's a great thrower, he's athlete, but he doesn't.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Know what And I'm with you on this. Those people
- 25:03Speaker 1: were you know, I was in the camp of, well,
- 25:05Speaker 1: the offensive line is a message, right, so you can't
- 25:07Speaker 1: put him out there yet those people find yeah, he
- 25:10Speaker 1: was ready though he was ready.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Yeah. The people that thought that he wasn't going to
- 25:13Speaker 3: be able to read coverages, that he wasn't going to
- 25:15Speaker 3: be able to go through progressions, that he wasn't going
- 25:18Speaker 3: to be consistently accurate enough to put up numbers like
- 25:21Speaker 3: that type of stuff, they were all proven wrong in
- 25:23Speaker 3: one game. And it's one game, and maybe it all
- 25:26Speaker 3: snowballs on them, but there was too much evidence on
- 25:28Speaker 3: the film of him doing stuff like the throw to
- 25:30Speaker 3: Booty that I just I don't think that, uh, And
- 25:33Speaker 3: I mean the second throw, the corner route throw, the progressions,
- 25:37Speaker 3: you know, getting all the way to his check downs
- 25:39Speaker 3: on a couple third downs, to Antonio Gibson getting to
- 25:42Speaker 3: Pop on that one play before halftime. Like there was
- 25:45Speaker 3: too much of that for me to sit here and
- 25:48Speaker 3: say that those people, like those people are crazy like that.
- 25:51Speaker 3: You thought you had to sit for two years like
- 25:53Speaker 3: he's already doing this kind of stuff and start number one, uh,
- 25:57Speaker 3: off the soapbox. Now the last one, I would say,
- 26:02Speaker 3: late in the game, fourth down and he throws it
- 26:05Speaker 3: out to Pop Douglas, that old friend Miles Bryant tried
- 26:09Speaker 3: to jump because he's throwing it from the far hash
- 26:12Speaker 3: all the way across the field on fourth down. That's
- 26:15Speaker 3: a throw again, like kind of like the other one
- 26:17Speaker 3: to Pop. A lot of quarterbacks get picked six there,
- 26:20Speaker 3: Like a lot of quarterbacks can't get the ball out
- 26:22Speaker 3: out there like that. It almost looked like it took
- 26:25Speaker 3: Bryant by surprise, like, oh God, like this ball, this
- 26:28Speaker 3: ball's by me right. That was a really impressive throw
- 26:32Speaker 3: late in this game as well. He got much better
- 26:34Speaker 3: as the game war went on. But in general, I
- 26:37Speaker 3: would just say, some of the nuanced quarterback stuff that
- 26:40Speaker 3: he was doing already speaks to that crowd. This guy
- 26:45Speaker 3: needs to sit, this guy needs to watch. It's gonna
- 26:48Speaker 3: take a year or two for him to be ready.
- 26:50Speaker 3: I think we all know now that all that stuff
- 26:54Speaker 3: was crazy. That's the plus side. Is there anything else
- 26:57Speaker 3: on the plus side that you wanted to mention before
- 26:59Speaker 3: we move over to the minus?
- 27:01Speaker 1: Just his his rushing ability. I mean, it wasn't just
- 27:04Speaker 1: picking up the yards that were given to him. I
- 27:05Speaker 1: thought he created some yards on his own.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Yeah, the fifteen yard scramble was really nice, Like there's
- 27:10Speaker 3: nobody open and he and he just made a play happen,
- 27:12Speaker 3: and then he picked one up on fourth down lay
- 27:14Speaker 3: in the game.
- 27:15Speaker 1: I'd like to see. And I guess this is more
- 27:19Speaker 1: of an Alyx fan Pelt thing than a Drake may thing.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Like I get why you maybe didn't have any design
- 27:23Speaker 1: runs for him in that game specifically. Yeah, but moving forward,
- 27:27Speaker 1: whether it's Reid options or just outright like QB power,
- 27:29Speaker 1: QB zone whatever, especially on like goal line short yardage
- 27:33Speaker 1: like when yeah, which which they didn't have a ton of.
- 27:35Speaker 1: But yeah, like let's let's get the kid's legs involvedmore. Now,
- 27:38Speaker 1: that's I think that that should be on the table.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, I was watching. It was that Monday Night football,
- 27:43Speaker 3: Bill's Jets, right Monday Night football. Yeah, and the last
- 27:48Speaker 3: the last official play of the game before the kneel downs,
- 27:51Speaker 3: and then it was third down and gotta have it
- 27:53Speaker 3: for Buffalo to avoid punting the ball back to the Jets,
- 27:57Speaker 3: and they run like a zone read with Josh Allen.
- 28:00Speaker 3: It wasn't like it it just in that situation. I'm
- 28:03Speaker 3: not No one wants him to be Lamar Jackson and
- 28:05Speaker 3: start running the ball ten to fifteen times a game. No,
- 28:07Speaker 3: just like a couple in right, those high leverage situations.
- 28:11Speaker 3: They allowed Josh Allen to just go pick up the
- 28:13Speaker 3: first down with his legs, and that's definitely on the table.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Now for Drake May, that's a good point to bring up.
- 28:20Speaker 3: All right, let's go to the minuses. So I had
- 28:22Speaker 3: nine minus plays in this game for Drake May. And
- 28:25Speaker 3: we can do this every week if people like it.
- 28:27Speaker 3: You know, this is how I do it. I usually
- 28:29Speaker 3: don't peel back the curtain this much. But he's a
- 28:31Speaker 3: rookie quarterback and we're all excited. So I decided to
- 28:34Speaker 3: write it up and share it this week. So I
- 28:36Speaker 3: had nine minus plays for him. The encouraging part was
- 28:41Speaker 3: that only three of those nine were mental errors in
- 28:44Speaker 3: my mind. Yeah, six of them were physical, And by
- 28:47Speaker 3: physical I mean Aaron throws, So he had he had
- 28:49Speaker 3: six sprays.
- 28:50Speaker 1: So you're talking about like when you say mentally, you
- 28:52Speaker 1: basically mean like he made the wrong read to make
- 28:54Speaker 1: the wrong decision.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you know, we didn't make the right reads,
- 28:57Speaker 3: didn't get the ball out on time, you know that
- 29:00Speaker 3: sort of stuff. And we'll get to those. So my
- 29:03Speaker 3: six physical errors, I can just rapid fire through them here.
- 29:06Speaker 3: The first interception is obviously a physical error, you know,
- 29:09Speaker 3: sales the ball over pop Douglas's head. I had one
- 29:12Speaker 3: play early on in this game where I felt like
- 29:14Speaker 3: he caused his own pressure, got a little bit antsy
- 29:16Speaker 3: in the pocket and ran into pressure. On third down
- 29:20Speaker 3: early on in this game, Austin Hooper is open over
- 29:23Speaker 3: the middle of the field and he missed the throw. Now,
- 29:26Speaker 3: he might have thought that Hooper was gonna sit. There
- 29:29Speaker 3: could have been more of like a miscommunication there than
- 29:32Speaker 3: like a physical error. But I put it down as
- 29:34Speaker 3: physical because I'm not inside his head. So I don't
- 29:36Speaker 3: know what he was thinking on the play. You mentioned
- 29:40Speaker 3: this one earlier. He had a third down throw to
- 29:42Speaker 3: Pop Douglas on a crossing grout that he just flat
- 29:44Speaker 3: out missed that was down backed up inside there on
- 29:48Speaker 3: twenty five and he just flat out misses. You mentioned
- 29:52Speaker 3: this one as well. He missed behind Pop Douglas on
- 29:55Speaker 3: a throw on a crossing route that should have been
- 29:58Speaker 3: a big play. Left yards on the field on that one.
- 30:01Speaker 3: And then my last one was wide left on a
- 30:04Speaker 3: hitch to Jamichael Hasty in the flat, just airmailed it,
- 30:08Speaker 3: just missed the throw. So those are my six physical errors.
- 30:12Speaker 3: My three mental were the illegal man downfield penalty early
- 30:17Speaker 3: on in this game on a screen that to me
- 30:19Speaker 3: is on the quarterback liked you either had to throw
- 30:22Speaker 3: it or you have to throw it away. But he
- 30:23Speaker 3: held the ball and that's what caused the penalty. So
- 30:26Speaker 3: I put that on him. I put at least a
- 30:28Speaker 3: little bit of the strip sack on him. I felt
- 30:31Speaker 3: like he had open receivers, especially keish On Booty in
- 30:34Speaker 3: the left sidelight on a hitch that he could have
- 30:37Speaker 3: gotten the ball kind of double pumped on that one
- 30:39Speaker 3: and held the ball a little bit too long, and
- 30:41Speaker 3: then there was one to late in the game. Another
- 30:44Speaker 3: the last sack where I felt like he had a
- 30:46Speaker 3: check down to Antonio Gibson and got caught with his
- 30:49Speaker 3: eyes of the field. So those are my three physical, mental,
- 30:52Speaker 3: excuse me errors in this game. Couple of the sacks.
- 30:54Speaker 3: Obviously the turnovers that sort of thing, But I I
- 31:00Speaker 3: think the biggest thing when I look at these errors
- 31:02Speaker 3: and just just kind of spin it forward, so a
- 31:06Speaker 3: lot of those are spray throws, right, like a lot
- 31:09Speaker 3: of those are missthrows. And as we move forward here
- 31:13Speaker 3: with this offense with Drake May, I look at what
- 31:17Speaker 3: he did last week against Houston against man coverage. Specifically,
- 31:22Speaker 3: he had six completions for one hundred and ten yards
- 31:24Speaker 3: and two touchdowns against man coverage. He also had a
- 31:27Speaker 3: couple scrambles against man coverage that were positive plays for
- 31:30Speaker 3: the Patriots. I don't think moving forward that teams are
- 31:35Speaker 3: going to be able to sit in man coverage anymore
- 31:37Speaker 3: against the Pats. I think Drake May, if you give
- 31:40Speaker 3: him man to man and you show him the matchups
- 31:42Speaker 3: that he has, he's gonna shred you. He's gonna absolutely
- 31:46Speaker 3: shred you. So that's a positive, yeah, but the negative
- 31:49Speaker 3: side or not even the negative, but just like this
- 31:51Speaker 3: is the other big thing for me with him moving forward.
- 31:54Speaker 3: We saw this with mac Mack was great for the
- 31:57Speaker 3: first what ten games of his rookie then all of
- 32:01Speaker 3: a sudden, defenses started to adjust, They started to adjust
- 32:04Speaker 3: to his playing style, and he never matt could never
- 32:08Speaker 3: counter from the adjustment. So the counter to Drake May's
- 32:12Speaker 3: playing style. If you sit in man to man against
- 32:15Speaker 3: the Patriots, they had a forty yard touchdown, a thirty
- 32:19Speaker 3: five yard touchdown, a seventeen yard completion, a fifteen yard run.
- 32:23Speaker 3: Like we're talking about explosive place given up against man
- 32:26Speaker 3: to man. That's what it's gonna look like every single
- 32:28Speaker 3: week if you try to man up against the Pats. Now,
- 32:31Speaker 3: my guess is is that teams are gonna start to
- 32:33Speaker 3: back off, they're gonna play more zone coverage, and they're
- 32:36Speaker 3: gonna force him to sit in the pocket and pick
- 32:38Speaker 3: them apart at the first two levels. So when we
- 32:40Speaker 3: talk about these misthrows or the spray is like, that's
- 32:44Speaker 3: where that I think can be exacerbated is if teams
- 32:47Speaker 3: are gonna say, you're gonna have to hit these tight
- 32:49Speaker 3: zone windows at the first two levels of the defense,
- 32:52Speaker 3: and you're gonna have to be consistently accurate throwing the
- 32:55Speaker 3: ball into coverage. That's where we don't think that you're
- 32:59Speaker 3: gonna be great. That's gonna be the test, like can
- 33:02Speaker 3: he adjust to that. I'm not necessarily as concerned about
- 33:06Speaker 3: the mental errors because I think that those were rookie
- 33:08Speaker 3: mistakes a lot of the time. But assuming that he
- 33:12Speaker 3: doesn't get to all the sort of Aaron throws fixed quickly,
- 33:17Speaker 3: which I don't think he will because it was there
- 33:19Speaker 3: at North Carolina and it was there already. Now that
- 33:22Speaker 3: teams are gonna start to do that, they're gonna see
- 33:25Speaker 3: can you be consistently accurate from the pocket? Is gonna
- 33:28Speaker 3: now be the game plan on Drake May I think.
- 33:30Speaker 1: For me the big thing just in terms of the negatives.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Remember in camp, like the first week, so a lot
- 33:36Speaker 1: of those misses, a lot of those sprays, they were long,
- 33:39Speaker 1: they were high, like they were overthrown. Yeah, he didn't
- 33:42Speaker 1: underthrow any passes. They were all overthrown. If you go
- 33:45Speaker 1: back to the early days of training camp, it was
- 33:46Speaker 1: the same thing when he came out and struggled that
- 33:48Speaker 1: first week everything was overthrown. And I remember saying at
- 33:51Speaker 1: the time, like the kids clearly just jacked up. You know,
- 33:56Speaker 1: first NFL training camp. He's got the adrenaline going, he's
- 33:59Speaker 1: probably got some society going, and you know, he's pushing it.
- 34:02Speaker 1: And I think you saw it. He kind of said
- 34:04Speaker 1: that that's what happened to him in this game, that
- 34:05Speaker 1: like he needed to settle down because most of those
- 34:08Speaker 1: misses were early or the ones that happened later. We're
- 34:11Speaker 1: in big spots, right, third downs, things like that. He's
- 34:15Speaker 1: just got to learn to like settle down and you
- 34:17Speaker 1: know control you know, controls, heart rate, control, the adrenaline,
- 34:20Speaker 1: things like that, because do some breathing exercise, breathing excite.
- 34:23Speaker 1: I wasn't gonna go there, but yeah, but like that,
- 34:26Speaker 1: that to me is like can he just And I
- 34:28Speaker 1: know that sounds dumb, but it's fair.
- 34:31Speaker 3: The first one, the interception, the first pack with Pop Douglas,
- 34:34Speaker 3: to me was a direct correlation of he's amped up.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Right and it's early on and I know it sounds dumb,
- 34:39Speaker 1: and I know it sounds simple, just like calm down,
- 34:41Speaker 1: but like this is what the great quarterbacks can do.
- 34:45Speaker 1: This is essentially what I guess it's not really qualifying it,
- 34:50Speaker 1: but it's sort of qualifying with clutches, right. Don't let
- 34:53Speaker 1: the moment consume you, don't let the moment be too
- 34:55Speaker 1: big for you. Level headed, It's just like every other
- 34:58Speaker 1: snap you've taken, high school, call, practice, whatever, and that's
- 35:02Speaker 1: gonna be the next steffort. And I'm not saying you
- 35:03Speaker 1: shouldn't play with passion, like he has a ton of
- 35:05Speaker 1: passion and that helps him and he should continue playing
- 35:08Speaker 1: with it, but it's it's controlled passion. Like this is
- 35:11Speaker 1: where I don't want to put Tom Brady up as
- 35:14Speaker 1: a standard for the kid because it's impossible to reach
- 35:16Speaker 1: or we allowed to talk about other teams owners on
- 35:18Speaker 1: the show. I just breaking any rules here like Brady.
- 35:23Speaker 1: And some people pointed this is why Brady wasn't good
- 35:26Speaker 1: at the beginning of Super Bowls, because he was maybe
- 35:28Speaker 1: too jacked up because that gay like those games are
- 35:32Speaker 1: so special to him. But for the most part, Tom
- 35:34Speaker 1: Brady was cool, calm, collected first minute of the season opener,
- 35:38Speaker 1: two minutes to go in the Super Bowl, in the
- 35:40Speaker 1: tie game, and it was that same level of intensity throughout.
- 35:44Speaker 1: And that's what Drake may again just Drake May get
- 35:47Speaker 1: to the Tom Brady level of it, Probably not, because
- 35:49Speaker 1: I don't think anybody has ever gotten to that Tom
- 35:52Speaker 1: Brady level of just balance. I mean it's one of
- 35:55Speaker 1: his truly for a guy that has a lot of
- 35:57Speaker 1: elite traits, that is an elite of an elite trade
- 35:59Speaker 1: for him. But it's something May is going to have
- 36:02Speaker 1: to chase where he just kind of has this level
- 36:04Speaker 1: headedness as the game goes on in this find the
- 36:07Speaker 1: level of intensity that he can play at where he's
- 36:10Speaker 1: locked in, he's engaged, he's playing with passion, but it's
- 36:14Speaker 1: not hurting him and he's gonna have to kind of
- 36:16Speaker 1: figure that out over the course of this year.
- 36:18Speaker 3: Yeah. So, you know, we talked to him on Wednesday,
- 36:21Speaker 3: and some of the conversations, you know, I had tried
- 36:26Speaker 3: to point him in the direction of like heay that
- 36:28Speaker 3: throat of Booty was pretty darn good, right, and his
- 36:31Speaker 3: lament was about the bad place, and I like, I
- 36:35Speaker 3: kind of love that.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Well though those are two different things. Yeah, Like you
- 36:39Speaker 1: can be your own harshest critic. Yeah, yeah, I wouldn't
- 36:43Speaker 1: relate those two, Like I'm.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Not relating to what you were saying. I'm just saying,
- 36:47Speaker 3: like you're talking about the mental side of it and
- 36:49Speaker 3: like kind of getting yourself more you know, even killed
- 36:52Speaker 3: or whatever you want to call it. Uh what I
- 36:55Speaker 3: I really there's been a lot of praise for his
- 36:58Speaker 3: play in this game on Sunday, and people you know
- 37:02Speaker 3: at your station who are on my side, so I
- 37:04Speaker 3: shouldn't you know, pick fights. But people on your station
- 37:08Speaker 3: are saying, you know, everybody's just glossing over a lot
- 37:10Speaker 3: of the negatives. Yeah, and just Drake May is not
- 37:13Speaker 3: glossing over the negatives like Drake May is. Like we
- 37:16Speaker 3: lost by twenty points. I turned the ball over three times,
- 37:19Speaker 3: but even if the last you know, one off the
- 37:21Speaker 3: tip wasn't necessarily my fall like that, that's what they're
- 37:24Speaker 3: talking about, you know. He said at the podium on
- 37:26Speaker 3: Wednesday that he thought he saw it well, he just
- 37:30Speaker 3: missed some throws, and I thought that that was really accurate,
- 37:32Speaker 3: Like that was exactly what was on the film, Like
- 37:35Speaker 3: he was seeing it. He was his eyes were all
- 37:38Speaker 3: in the right places at all times, he was going
- 37:41Speaker 3: the right places with the football. He just flat out
- 37:44Speaker 3: missed some throws. And I'm, like I said earlier at
- 37:47Speaker 3: the top of the show. I'm just so willing to
- 37:49Speaker 3: work with that guy, right, the guy that just you know,
- 37:52Speaker 3: we got to hone him in, We got to get
- 37:53Speaker 3: him more less amped up. I asked him, you know why,
- 37:56Speaker 3: he said, I missed some throws. Asked him why, why
- 37:58Speaker 3: do you feel like that was and he said he
- 38:00Speaker 3: felt like he was jacked up, like he was he
- 38:02Speaker 3: was hyped up. Especially he pointed to the Douglas interception
- 38:06Speaker 3: at the top of the first you know, first one
- 38:08Speaker 3: at the beginning of the game and just said that
- 38:11Speaker 3: he was amped up. And you know, that's hopefully something
- 38:14Speaker 3: that first career start, you're just kind of have jitters, right,
- 38:18Speaker 3: and maybe that that dies down a little bit moving forward.
- 38:21Speaker 3: I'm also kind of lamenting, like he felt like he
- 38:23Speaker 3: took too many sacks in this game and he should
- 38:25Speaker 3: have gotten the ball out more than he did. Uh So,
- 38:28Speaker 3: I like all the messaging and all the things that
- 38:30Speaker 3: he's that he said, no limp, right, we can we
- 38:34Speaker 3: can say that at practice, no brace, no limp on
- 38:37Speaker 3: the knees, So that that's good news as well. Is
- 38:39Speaker 3: there anything else on Drake?
- 38:41Speaker 2: May?
- 38:41Speaker 3: I feel like we we unpacked it pretty good, but
- 38:43Speaker 3: I I I don't think I have anything else until
- 38:46Speaker 3: we get to the Jaguars, which I will talk about
- 38:48Speaker 3: here in a few minutes.
- 38:49Speaker 1: With Drake. Uh, no delay game penalties.
- 38:54Speaker 3: No delay games like the operation had smooth. He had
- 38:57Speaker 3: one under center snap that was a little bit wonky,
- 39:00Speaker 3: you know for a first.
- 39:01Speaker 1: We'll get to Ben Brown, but like, yeah, no, for
- 39:03Speaker 1: the circumstances that that we're there, I have no problem
- 39:06Speaker 1: with the Snake. I just remember there were there were
- 39:08Speaker 1: concerns about him, like you know, the play calls are
- 39:11Speaker 1: gonna be too long. He never called plays in a
- 39:13Speaker 1: huddle with the headset and things like that. Uh, nothing
- 39:18Speaker 1: in that. I didn't see that like kind of in
- 39:22Speaker 1: my face right during this game.
- 39:24Speaker 3: Yep. Absolutely, all right, let's do three up, three down,
- 39:26Speaker 3: and then we'll take the phones and we'll we'll get
- 39:29Speaker 3: into the Jaguars a little bit as well. So let's
- 39:31Speaker 3: start with the ups, start with the positives as we
- 39:34Speaker 3: normally do. Who is your number one up in this game?
- 39:37Speaker 1: My number one? Well, we talked about this before, like
- 39:40Speaker 1: you're you're gonna cover? Are we doing like Drake may Aside?
- 39:42Speaker 1: Since we just did Drake may Aside? Yeah, wait, did
- 39:47Speaker 1: my phone erase it?
- 39:48Speaker 3: I did this earlier. Oh my god, I'm do it again.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Don't lie to me. You forgot or did that.
- 39:54Speaker 1: No, Evan I stood next to in the locker room earlier.
- 39:57Speaker 1: We were doing it. My phone didn't save it, all right, whatever,
- 39:59Speaker 1: I just oh wait, oh, I have two up down
- 40:02Speaker 1: notes in my phone. That's why that's weird. I don't
- 40:04Speaker 1: know I have that all right.
- 40:07Speaker 5: Uh.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Up number one, I kind of already. Uh you know,
- 40:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna make that up number two, Up number one.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Ben Brown nice for everything Drake May. Usually I'm the
- 40:15Speaker 1: guy for everything Drake May did in that game on Sunday. Yeah,
- 40:19Speaker 1: pound for pound, Ben Brown was the most impressive player
- 40:21Speaker 1: on the field for the Patriots. Yeah, I'm okay saying that,
- 40:24Speaker 1: like not to say Drake May was bad. Ben Brown
- 40:26Speaker 1: was the most impressive player to show up on two
- 40:29Speaker 1: days notice. Center a line that is already patchwork, with
- 40:34Speaker 1: a guy making his first career start behind you, in
- 40:36Speaker 1: a system that is heavily predicated on the center making
- 40:40Speaker 1: sure things go right pre snap against one of the
- 40:43Speaker 1: best pass rushing teams in the league, and not not
- 40:46Speaker 1: a guy that's like a veteran either. He played I
- 40:48Speaker 1: think eight NFL snaps. Yeah, before Sunday, all at guard.
- 40:52Speaker 1: That's unfreaking believable.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Man, Yes, and I think get tested much like and
- 40:58Speaker 3: I don't. The bar was on the floor, So in
- 41:01Speaker 3: full disclosure, because I'm with you, full disclosure. Pregame, I
- 41:05Speaker 3: was freaking out were I was freaking out and I
- 41:07Speaker 3: was freaking out to you and I was like, what
- 41:09Speaker 3: the heck are they doing? This is his first career start. Like,
- 41:12Speaker 3: even if nick Levert's like not very good at football,
- 41:15Speaker 3: at least he's been here since training camp and he's
- 41:18Speaker 3: been you know, he's been in this offense and he's
- 41:19Speaker 3: been at these practices. And he actually worked a lot
- 41:22Speaker 3: with Drake May over the summer because he was the
- 41:24Speaker 3: backup center, so he took a lot of snaps with
- 41:26Speaker 3: Drake May and I was like, this is this is
- 41:29Speaker 3: not good, Like this is not a good decision. And
- 41:32Speaker 3: then he get into the game, and so much kudos
- 41:35Speaker 3: go to Ben Brown, So much kudos to go to
- 41:38Speaker 3: I know they get a lot of flak, but Scott
- 41:40Speaker 3: Peters and Kugler and all those guys to get him
- 41:43Speaker 3: ready to play in this game, huge props because all
- 41:47Speaker 3: of us were like, holy crap, what are they doing?
- 41:50Speaker 3: And may a cople on that like they he was better,
- 41:53Speaker 3: he was better than I should say.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Let me add Peters in Coogler to the list as
- 41:57Speaker 1: well of ops with this and I I know there
- 42:01Speaker 1: was kind of some narrative out there this week about well,
- 42:05Speaker 1: you know, the line wasn't great at the beginning, but
- 42:08Speaker 1: they keep finding guys. Does the staff deserve more credit
- 42:11Speaker 1: than they're getting. I don't know about the front office,
- 42:15Speaker 1: because the front office still put them in this spot.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Peters Coogler, who's third offensive line coach and blacking the
- 42:23Speaker 1: guy from Brown. Yeah, anyway, we should know the names.
- 42:27Speaker 1: I should know that name. I want to make sure
- 42:28Speaker 1: I get it because he deserves a credit. The fact
- 42:31Speaker 1: that I'm actually incredibly high on Scott Peters just for
- 42:34Speaker 1: the season as a whole. From what we've seen.
- 42:38Speaker 3: There's definitely moments happening, maybe even a little bit more
- 42:42Speaker 3: the last couple of weeks that I've seen.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Michael McCarthy, that's so Scott Peters, Robert Ruey, Michael McCarthy.
- 42:49Speaker 1: It's been six combinations in six weeks. Is going to
- 42:52Speaker 1: be seven to seven this week in Jacksonville? Do you
- 42:54Speaker 1: know how many linemen there are healthy on the active
- 42:57Speaker 1: roster that were with the team in camp? Five? Yeah,
- 43:02Speaker 1: four guards and Veeri four guards and no I think
- 43:06Speaker 1: it's all No, it's just four. It's not a tackle. Oh,
- 43:10Speaker 1: I don't know if I'm counting low or not. I
- 43:12Speaker 1: gonna go back and double check that. But the point
- 43:13Speaker 1: being like they had seventeen linemen in the start of camp.
- 43:17Speaker 1: The guys who are still here, Jordan low when who Robinson?
- 43:23Speaker 6: So?
- 43:23Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 43:24Speaker 1: Jordan low On when Robinson so? So? For their health?
- 43:27Speaker 1: Counting right, four that are healthy and all guards and
- 43:31Speaker 1: the fact that and it hasn't been pretty, but how
- 43:33Speaker 1: many times we come away from these games saying how
- 43:36Speaker 1: much better? And I thought it would even if it
- 43:38Speaker 1: wasn't good.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Ton of credit to the offensive line coaching staff to
- 43:42Speaker 1: the point where now I'm like, well, what's gonna happen
- 43:45Speaker 1: When they get like five NFL caliber players across the
- 43:48Speaker 1: board and it's that same group week after week after week,
- 43:51Speaker 1: they may be able to really put something together. Right.
- 43:53Speaker 1: So Ben Brown deserves a ton of credit and the
- 43:56Speaker 1: offensive line coaching staff deserves a ton of credit because
- 43:59Speaker 1: what happened. Here's the clearest way you can put it.
- 44:01Speaker 1: What happens Sunday should not have happened. Then Brown should
- 44:04Speaker 1: not have had that kind of performance. The fact that
- 44:06Speaker 1: he shouldn't have had to play, He should have had
- 44:08Speaker 1: to play. But the fact that he did that kind
- 44:11Speaker 1: of performance is so far above and beyond expectations. He
- 44:14Speaker 1: and the coaching staff deserve so much credit.
- 44:16Speaker 3: Okay, So I agree with a lot of what you said. Now,
- 44:20Speaker 3: run blocking wise, they were.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Bad, Well, they were bad. We'll get to the running
- 44:25Speaker 1: game a little bit. We didn't disagree with me, but.
- 44:28Speaker 3: They did not take They did not block well in
- 44:30Speaker 3: this game. So that's a piece of it. The other
- 44:34Speaker 3: piece and kind of victory lap a little bit again.
- 44:37Speaker 3: So I had them with a thirty three percent pressure
- 44:39Speaker 3: rate allowed. It's the lowest of any game this season.
- 44:43Speaker 3: I do not think it's a coincidence that the quarterback
- 44:45Speaker 3: change and now all of a sudden they have a
- 44:46Speaker 3: low pressure rate with a bunch of backups with Vederian
- 44:50Speaker 3: low playing ten snaps and then going out of the
- 44:52Speaker 3: game with a really third string, fourth maybe even four
- 44:56Speaker 3: string of Brian Hudson's factoring into this center. Like, I
- 44:59Speaker 3: don't think it's a coincidence that Drake may is playing
- 45:03Speaker 3: and all of a sudden the pressure rate looks a
- 45:05Speaker 3: little bit better. A lot of that is tied to
- 45:08Speaker 3: the quarterback, just like a lot of the sacks are
- 45:10Speaker 3: tied to the quarterback too. To be you know, to
- 45:12Speaker 3: be fair on both sides of it. To the offensive line.
- 45:15Speaker 3: I told people ahead of time that the line would
- 45:18Speaker 3: look better with the better quarterback, And the line looked
- 45:21Speaker 3: better at the better quarterback. So the run blocking wasn't great.
- 45:26Speaker 3: You get over there, Yeah, I know what's going on.
- 45:28Speaker 3: The linebacker wasn't great, or the running the linebacker. Linebackers
- 45:32Speaker 3: weren't great out there. The run blocking wasn't great, and
- 45:35Speaker 3: the quarterback changed, And that's a factor. It's a factor
- 45:38Speaker 3: like the very his first completion of the game, the
- 45:41Speaker 3: bootleg player comes right through the middle of the line
- 45:44Speaker 3: of scrimmage. But he's athletic and he's strong enough to
- 45:47Speaker 3: get out of there anyways. Right, So those are the
- 45:49Speaker 3: little things that happened that are different now that they
- 45:52Speaker 3: have a different quarterback. But you're right, Brent Brown played
- 45:55Speaker 3: a heck of a game in this game for given
- 45:57Speaker 3: the circumstances. All right, So we're taking Drake May out
- 46:00Speaker 3: of this, right, are you dying? Are you good?
- 46:01Speaker 2: Like?
- 46:01Speaker 3: Are we gonna? I just got like some I don't know,
- 46:05Speaker 3: Jesus Christ. Everybody's like, I.
- 46:07Speaker 1: Don't know how much people listen to him trying to
- 46:08Speaker 1: pull the mic away.
- 46:09Speaker 3: Apologies, there's yeah, yeah, all right. My number one up
- 46:15Speaker 3: in this game was Pop Douglas. I thought he was
- 46:18Speaker 3: the best player on the field for the Patriots offensively.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Uh.
- 46:21Speaker 3: Six catches, ninety two yards, touchdown, career high for his
- 46:24Speaker 3: career tee, all that kind of stuff is great, But
- 46:27Speaker 3: I I really felt like he could have had like
- 46:29Speaker 3: one hundred and fifty yards in this game if Drake
- 46:32Speaker 3: May had made some more throws on those crossing routes. Uh.
- 46:35Speaker 3: He is an absolute problem against man coverage. Like this
- 46:39Speaker 3: is a legitimate man coverage demon in Pop Douglas that
- 46:44Speaker 3: the Patriots have. Uh, the teams are going to have
- 46:47Speaker 3: to start accounting for this now that they have a
- 46:49Speaker 3: quarterback that can actually get him the football. Uh, they're
- 46:52Speaker 3: gonna have to. I don't know if they're gonna it's
- 46:54Speaker 3: gonna be a bracket, it's gonna be robber, it's gonna
- 46:57Speaker 3: be what, you know, whatever they do to try to
- 46:59Speaker 3: cut off the middle of the because if you just
- 47:01Speaker 3: play man to man with popping the slot, he's gonna
- 47:03Speaker 3: run across the field and he's gonna get open. Like
- 47:05Speaker 3: he was absolutely I don't even have the word for it.
- 47:09Speaker 3: Like he was just absolutely owning Jalen Petrie and Eric
- 47:13Speaker 3: Murray in this game. Like it wasn't even some of
- 47:15Speaker 3: the reps weren't even close. They weren't even competitive, Like
- 47:18Speaker 3: he was shaking them off the screen on some plays.
- 47:22Speaker 3: It was awesome to watch. He was great in this game.
- 47:26Speaker 3: He is a man coverage problem. If he gets hitting
- 47:29Speaker 3: stride on the crossing route that we talked about earlier,
- 47:32Speaker 3: that when for seventeen, that's probably another thirty five yard touchdown.
- 47:36Speaker 3: And if he gets hit on that third down play
- 47:38Speaker 3: early on in the game, and that he airmailed on
- 47:41Speaker 3: the interception, and there was another crosser that he missed
- 47:44Speaker 3: in the early second half, like third quarter on a
- 47:47Speaker 3: crossing ground. You add those three plays back into his totals,
- 47:51Speaker 3: we're talking one hundred and fifty and two touchdowns for
- 47:54Speaker 3: Pop Douglass in this game. So he was fantastic. And
- 47:58Speaker 3: now you know, if they start playing, they start playing
- 48:00Speaker 3: cut like they start cutting him off on those crossing routes.
- 48:04Speaker 3: I'm waiting to see the inverted over where he fakes
- 48:06Speaker 3: the crosser and then breaks out like on a corner
- 48:08Speaker 3: or something like that. I'm also waiting for. Now, you're
- 48:12Speaker 3: gonna have one on ones other places, right, Like if
- 48:14Speaker 3: the safeties are helping to Pop in the middle of
- 48:16Speaker 3: the field, that's gonna create one on ones for Polk,
- 48:20Speaker 3: for Booty, for Born, for Hunter Henry. Like those guys
- 48:23Speaker 3: have to then go out and windows. But I had
- 48:25Speaker 3: I had Pop as my number one up. Who's number two?
- 48:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I popped all this too, I mean, and the
- 48:30Speaker 1: biggest thing I agree with already said, it's sustainable. I
- 48:33Speaker 1: think this is who he is.
- 48:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:34Speaker 1: I just think he's an absolute demon out of the slot.
- 48:37Speaker 1: Yeah he should be he stays healthy. We talked about
- 48:41Speaker 1: before the year, we thought he could be a thousand
- 48:42Speaker 1: yard receiver.
- 48:43Speaker 3: Like, here we go, he's on pace even with how
- 48:46Speaker 3: a kneemake their passing game was to start the season,
- 48:48Speaker 3: he was He's on pace for seventy catches. And now
- 48:51Speaker 3: if you're factor in that, Drake May is going to
- 48:53Speaker 3: be throwing him the ball, hopefully for the rest of
- 48:55Speaker 3: the season, he might might add, you know, five to
- 48:58Speaker 3: ten catches onto that pace. We might be talking about
- 49:01Speaker 3: like at least eight for eight hundred. Yeah, eighty for
- 49:04Speaker 3: eight hundred. I mean for Pop this year, if not more,
- 49:07Speaker 3: if he hits on some of those explosive plays. The
- 49:09Speaker 3: only thing that I'm waiting for now I mentioned the
- 49:12Speaker 3: inverted over is what they used to call it. Some
- 49:15Speaker 3: West Coast teams call it a Seattle route, or like
- 49:17Speaker 3: you fake the crosser and then you break out, like
- 49:19Speaker 3: you get the corner to commit his hips to the
- 49:21Speaker 3: crosser and then you cut out on it. Edelman was
- 49:25Speaker 3: great at it. Jacobe Myers is actually really good at
- 49:27Speaker 3: that route. The other thing I'm just waiting for, too,
- 49:30Speaker 3: is like, you know, some more vertical routes down the field,
- 49:33Speaker 3: like double moves or seams or whatever. Now that Drake
- 49:37Speaker 3: may is in there, I think Pop Douglas is a
- 49:39Speaker 3: big play guy that can do those types of things.
- 49:42Speaker 3: So I had Pop, You had Pop? Who is your third?
- 49:45Speaker 1: I think the second week in Orre, I've had this guy,
- 49:47Speaker 1: Marte Mapu. Yeah, just continues We'll talk about the defense
- 49:51Speaker 1: and then has not been good. But I think the
- 49:56Speaker 1: like Macro picture for the defense, right, Yeah, you lose
- 49:59Speaker 1: to On bent Lee, you lose Jabrill Peppers, you lose
- 50:02Speaker 1: Matthew Judon, you lose Christian Barmore. Not only are these
- 50:04Speaker 1: guys good players, their tone setters. They play with a
- 50:09Speaker 1: physical edge that sort of just becomes infectious to the
- 50:14Speaker 1: rest of the team. And what you have right now
- 50:18Speaker 1: with this defense is I think a unit that's not
- 50:20Speaker 1: playing with a ton of intensity, not playing with a
- 50:22Speaker 1: ton of physicality. Except for Marte Mapu, who continues to
- 50:27Speaker 1: play very good football, very physical football. They need to
- 50:30Speaker 1: set it up where he becomes the new tone setter
- 50:33Speaker 1: for this defense because he's the only guy playing with
- 50:35Speaker 1: that tone right now that they need to get to.
- 50:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought he was good in this game. I
- 50:39Speaker 3: considered him as well. He also has the pass breakup
- 50:41Speaker 3: in the end zone that leads to an interception. It's
- 50:43Speaker 3: kind of like the only play they made on defense.
- 50:46Speaker 3: It feels like the guy that I had on defense,
- 50:48Speaker 3: because when they lose like this, I try to do
- 50:50Speaker 3: one offense, one defense. And then I had Drake, so
- 50:52Speaker 3: you don't have to go over that again. It was
- 50:54Speaker 3: Devon Gotscha, who I know it feels weird that you
- 50:56Speaker 3: give up one hundred and ninety rushing yards and you
- 50:58Speaker 3: put the nose tackle as that and up. But he
- 51:01Speaker 3: did it running away from him. Yeah, he had six
- 51:03Speaker 3: stuffs in this game. He's up to eighteen stuffs on
- 51:06Speaker 3: the season. It leads all in interior defensive linemen. Yep,
- 51:10Speaker 3: and that's stat with eighteen of them. So he's been fantastic.
- 51:15Speaker 3: I think he's done his job more than adequately. He's
- 51:18Speaker 3: done his job at a really high level. So they're
- 51:21Speaker 3: running away from him. It's off tackle and in this
- 51:23Speaker 3: game they actually ran a couple of wham plays where
- 51:26Speaker 3: they specifically blocked him, you know, with scheme because they
- 51:31Speaker 3: couldn't block him one on one, so they had to
- 51:33Speaker 3: throw something else at him. And it's not really on
- 51:35Speaker 3: him that other people aren't making those plays. So Devon
- 51:38Speaker 3: Godshaw six stuffs is a lot, especially for that position
- 51:41Speaker 3: where you're playing nose tackle. You're getting doubled a lot,
- 51:45Speaker 3: like you're not necessarily in there to put up stats.
- 51:48Speaker 3: He's put up stats this year and he's been very
- 51:50Speaker 3: very good. So Godshaw is my other one. Let's go
- 51:53Speaker 3: over to the downs, right, we did all of our
- 51:55Speaker 3: ups ye. Yeah, who's your number one down mine?
- 52:00Speaker 1: Jalen Polk. Yeah, so on a day for the where
- 52:02Speaker 1: the offense really got going for him to kind of
- 52:06Speaker 1: be left out of that. And I'm not somebody who
- 52:07Speaker 1: believes like this is like who he'll be, but drops
- 52:10Speaker 1: or thing with him. Now, Like we knew he was
- 52:11Speaker 1: getting open, he continued to get open. Doesn't mean anything
- 52:14Speaker 1: if he can't catch the ball. So he's just he's
- 52:17Speaker 1: got to catch the ball.
- 52:19Speaker 3: Yeah, some focus drops in this game, and that's that's
- 52:23Speaker 3: a little bit concerning, like drops that are that are
- 52:26Speaker 3: tough catches or forest errors or whatever. Some people don't
- 52:30Speaker 3: even track those as drops, like if the defender gets
- 52:33Speaker 3: his hand in late or something like that. These were
- 52:36Speaker 3: like these were on your mits and you just dropped
- 52:38Speaker 3: the ball, right, Yeah, Yeah, he was on my list
- 52:40Speaker 3: as well as Austin Hooper, you know. With that fumble
- 52:44Speaker 3: was my third down, But I'll start back up at
- 52:46Speaker 3: the top. I had four downs actually, because you know
- 52:49Speaker 3: we'll lose by twenty points, we're gonna have some more.
- 52:52Speaker 3: My number one down right now, and this is like
- 52:55Speaker 3: kind of crawling on my backside a little bit. At
- 52:57Speaker 3: this point, the defensive coaching the defensive coaching to me
- 53:03Speaker 3: in in general, I will I understand that they've had
- 53:09Speaker 3: injuries in off field circumstances and nobody's fault that Christian
- 53:13Speaker 3: Barmore randomly gets blood clots like the day second day
- 53:17Speaker 3: of training camp. And I get all that they are
- 53:20Speaker 3: too talented on defense to be twenty ninth in the league.
- 53:23Speaker 3: In Dvoa, they are at bottom five defense in the NFL.
- 53:27Speaker 3: They have too much talent on the field. Like, they
- 53:29Speaker 3: have guys in the secondary. They have a Christian Gonzales.
- 53:32Speaker 3: They have a number one corner Kyle Dugger is a
- 53:35Speaker 3: good football player. They have guys in the front seven,
- 53:38Speaker 3: Keon White. I mentioned Devon Godshaw as an up. Joshua
- 53:42Speaker 3: Ja has played better football than this in his past.
- 53:44Speaker 3: Jelani Tavai has played much better football than this in
- 53:47Speaker 3: his past. Their fundamentals aren't great. Their run fits are terrible.
- 53:52Speaker 3: H they're not playing good fundamentally. Do your job, you know,
- 53:56Speaker 3: assignment sound football on the defense. Uh, they are getting
- 53:59Speaker 3: out schemeing weeke in and week out getting out schemed.
- 54:02Speaker 3: I mean they the same play post. It's a simple post. Cross.
- 54:09Speaker 3: San Francisco started it like they started spamming it. Miami
- 54:13Speaker 3: hit a big playoff of it, and now Houston hit
- 54:16Speaker 3: a big playoff of it, a twenty six yard indcut
- 54:18Speaker 3: to Stefan Diggs. It's the same play base defense, cover two,
- 54:23Speaker 3: run a vertical over the top, run a cross or
- 54:26Speaker 3: a dig at the second level, one of those two
- 54:28Speaker 3: routes is going to be open. Just throw to the
- 54:30Speaker 3: open guy. Three straight games, three straight quarterbacks have hit
- 54:33Speaker 3: the same route all three times. You know, these are
- 54:36Speaker 3: things that you look at the play calling, you look
- 54:40Speaker 3: at the fundamentals, you look at across the board. They
- 54:45Speaker 3: are too good. They have too many horses on defense
- 54:49Speaker 3: to be giving up forty one points a game. They
- 54:51Speaker 3: I understand they had some short fields. I understand they
- 54:54Speaker 3: had the injury excuses, but I thought to Von Gotshaw
- 54:57Speaker 3: said it best after the game, Like we've had injuries
- 55:00Speaker 3: in the past, we've had circumstances in the past, We've
- 55:03Speaker 3: still been able to maintain a certain standard, a certain
- 55:06Speaker 3: level of defense. And you know, my one big take
- 55:09Speaker 3: too on the defense, and this is just my opinion,
- 55:13Speaker 3: strictly my opinion. I don't love the approach that Gerard
- 55:19Speaker 3: Mayo has taken, and I didn't love it. I'm sure
- 55:22Speaker 3: we talked about this when he got hired, because I
- 55:24Speaker 3: didn't love it back then either. It's to the point
- 55:27Speaker 3: now at the defense where I'm starting to consider that
- 55:32Speaker 3: Gerard Mayo might might need to take over himself. He
- 55:38Speaker 3: is a defensive minded head coach. He is a first
- 55:41Speaker 3: time head coach. He's one of the youngest. He's the
- 55:44Speaker 3: second youngest. I'll just stick to the facts. He's the
- 55:47Speaker 3: second youngest head coach in the NFL. It's really difficult
- 55:52Speaker 3: to be a CEO head coach. It's the ideal. Bill
- 55:55Speaker 3: Belichick is the ideal. A guy that has a rolladex
- 55:59Speaker 3: of knowledg that he can just go all three phases
- 56:02Speaker 3: and he can just go through it and he can
- 56:04Speaker 3: hand you know, we got to do this on special teams,
- 56:06Speaker 3: got to do this offensively, defensively. I don't think Girod
- 56:11Speaker 3: Mayo has the experience to be able to pull from
- 56:16Speaker 3: past experiences like Bill could to coach the side of
- 56:21Speaker 3: the ball that's not his area expertise. Does that make sense? Like, yeah,
- 56:24Speaker 3: so I look at it. Coaches across the league that
- 56:29Speaker 3: are in similar spots, that are in you know, similar
- 56:31Speaker 3: age ranges, similar experiences. Demiko Ryans, he was just here
- 56:36Speaker 3: with Houston. Demiko Ryans is the Texans defensive play caller. He's,
- 56:40Speaker 3: by all intents and purposes, their defensive coordinator, Bobby Slowick
- 56:44Speaker 3: is running their offense. Does Demiko Ryans every once in
- 56:47Speaker 3: a while get in the headset and say, hey, let's
- 56:49Speaker 3: run the ball here. I'm sure he does right, I'm
- 56:52Speaker 3: sure he has input. You're the head coach, but his
- 56:56Speaker 3: focus is on the defense. He leads the meetings, he
- 56:59Speaker 3: calls the plays like he's the defensive coordinator for all
- 57:03Speaker 3: intents and purposes. Even a guy that's his experienced is
- 57:06Speaker 3: like Andy Reid in this league. Steve Spagnelo is coaching
- 57:10Speaker 3: the Kansas City defense. That's his baby, That's his side
- 57:13Speaker 3: of the ball. Andy Reid's calling plays on offense, He's
- 57:17Speaker 3: drawn stuff up in the lab. Steve Spagnello is coaching
- 57:20Speaker 3: the defense we see it on Sundays. He's calling timeouts
- 57:23Speaker 3: from the sideline when they're on defense, right, Like, that's
- 57:25Speaker 3: his side of the football. I like Covington. He's got
- 57:30Speaker 3: a lot of energy, he's got a lot of intensity.
- 57:33Speaker 3: I think he's got a really good chance to be
- 57:35Speaker 3: a good head coach or a good coach. Excuse me
- 57:37Speaker 3: down the line here, and I'm not saying he's a
- 57:39Speaker 3: bad coach, but when you're twenty ninth in the league
- 57:42Speaker 3: in Dvoa, I believe there's still thirty first in the
- 57:45Speaker 3: league on third down, Like, they're just not a very
- 57:48Speaker 3: good defense right now, that's Mayo's side of the ball.
- 57:51Speaker 3: I would like to see him take maybe a little
- 57:53Speaker 3: bit more ownership. And just for the sake of discussion here,
- 57:57Speaker 3: I don't know for a fact that he's not taking
- 57:59Speaker 3: ownership right Like, I don't know one hundred percent of
- 58:01Speaker 3: this isn't already how it's going on. But it feels
- 58:04Speaker 3: to me like he kind of wants to be that CEO.
- 58:07Speaker 3: That's what he told us, that he wants to delegate
- 58:10Speaker 3: and he wants to sit at the top and do
- 58:11Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff. I'm just not sure if
- 58:13Speaker 3: that's the best structure for him right now. I'll give
- 58:16Speaker 3: you one more name, Mike McDonald. In Seattle, he is
- 58:22Speaker 3: allowing Grub Ryan Grubb, their offensive coordinator, to run the offense.
- 58:28Speaker 3: Mac McDonald has the play sheet on the defensive side
- 58:30Speaker 3: of the ball. Right former defensive coordinator the Baltimore Ravens.
- 58:33Speaker 3: That's how he got this job. He is running his
- 58:35Speaker 3: defense and Ryan grub is running the offense. That's the
- 58:40Speaker 3: youngest head coach in the NFL by like a year, right,
- 58:43Speaker 3: Sean McVay very first time, and I promise I'll stop
- 58:47Speaker 3: branding Sean McVay. His very first setup as the Rams
- 58:51Speaker 3: head coach was Sean McVay is the head coach slash.
- 58:55Speaker 3: Let's just call it what it is. Offensive coordinator. Wade
- 58:58Speaker 3: Phillips was the defense coordinator. There's nobody more experienced and
- 59:02Speaker 3: more knowledgeable about defense besides maybe Bill and Nick Saban
- 59:05Speaker 3: than Wade Phillips. So he hired a veteran guy who's
- 59:09Speaker 3: done it before, and Wade Phillips was in charge of
- 59:12Speaker 3: the defense like it was Wade Phillips' defense. I just
- 59:16Speaker 3: feel like Girod Mayo might need to be more hands
- 59:20Speaker 3: on with the defense because this is tackling, this is
- 59:24Speaker 3: run fits, This is not like high level stuff. This
- 59:29Speaker 3: is fundamentals and baseline standard of football. They need to
- 59:33Speaker 3: be better at that sort of stuff.
- 59:34Speaker 1: And to your point about there maybe being a change,
- 59:36Speaker 1: Trod Mayo said this week when he was asked about
- 59:38Speaker 1: is the penalty specifically, but I think this applies to
- 59:40Speaker 1: all the fundamental stuff they're being changes. Yeah, to you know,
- 59:45Speaker 1: they need reliable guys. And it came across like he
- 59:47Speaker 1: was talking about the roster and the depth chart. But
- 59:50Speaker 1: maybe that applies to coaching staff too, So maybe last
- 59:52Speaker 1: week's game is the impetus for that.
- 59:54Speaker 3: Yeah, And I don't necessarily, I'm not advocating is against
- 59:57Speaker 3: just my opinion. I'm not advocating for the fact that
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: they should take play calling away from DeMarcus Comington necessarily.
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: But if girod Mayo is trying to have his hands
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: in every single sort of jar, so to speak, and
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: split his time up between offense, defense, special teams and
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: give each one of those his time, it might be
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: time to give seven sixty five percent to the defense,
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: right like favor of the defense, because that's your area of.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: Any fertities, that's where you need more helpe right now?
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred percent? All right, who's your another second time?
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: So I mean kind of along the same lines. I
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: just went run game, both sides of the ball. You
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: covered a lot of what's going on on defense, poor
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: run fits, poor tackling. You look at those two big runs.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: There's guys just shooting out a position, being way too aggressive,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: trying to make plays that aren't there. I saw Jacquelin
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: and Roy who's played pretty well, but like, yeah, he
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: had a blown assignment on a run. Marco Wilson had
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: a blown assignment on a run. Just guys being out
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: of position. Then on offense too, they missed Ramandrie Stevenson
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: badly in this game. Yeah, and this is where you're
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: gonna roll your eyes and me and I know, because.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: They're gonna go that was the running back and not
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: the guys getting blown off.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: Yes, and no, they didn't block well, but they haven't
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: blocked well in the run game all year, and they've
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: still run the ball well with Stevenson in there. Remember
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: there's that stat two weeks in the season that kind
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: of blew up that Stevenson in more yards after contact
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: than he did total yards. And you can push back
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: and say the way PFF calculates yards after contact or
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: the way next Gen calculates yards after contact is maybe
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: a litterable, a little more favorable than the running back
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: than it needs to be. But the reality is that
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: all their backs were getting hit in the backfield constantly,
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: but with Stevenson. Where they miss Stevenson, and this is
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: where I think the running backs don't matter. People miss
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: the picture. It's not about Stevenson's ability to break off
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: a thirty yard run, a thirty five yard run. We
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: know we can do that, but Antonio Gibson can do
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: that too. The difference is, to me, like Ramandrie, Stevenson
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: is really good at turning a run that should go
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: for no yards into a three or four yard game,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: or a run that should get stopped in the backfield
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: into a game of two or three yards. And what
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: that does is it allows the Patriots offense to stay
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: on schedule. Even when the run blocking's not there. Stevenson's
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: still gonna get you three yards. Now it's second and seven. Again,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: maybe the run blocking's not there, He's gonna get you
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: three more. Now it's third and four, instead of when
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: you look at what happened on the first series of
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: this game, third and nine. Because that hidden yards that
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: Stevenson was getting for you just by falling forward or
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: not allowing the first guy to tackle him and waiting
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: until a second defender got there to come down. Stevenson's
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: averaging four was averaging four yards after contact per carry
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: coming into this game, right, and again you want to say, well,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: that number is not right. It's not calculated. Just for reference,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: the same people that were calculating that had the Patriots
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: at two point one yards after contact in this game.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: That's two yards per run that aren't there. That adds
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: up over the course of the game. So you know,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: did they They didn't miss when it comes to the
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: big runs.
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: Right, are you telling me that you go and this
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: with drafting your boys. I'm not.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: You still don't understand that take, so I have to
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: refine it. I do not say, well, let me just
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: be I do not think the patriot should draft ash
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: genty in the first round. Let me be clear about
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: the Patriots should not draft ash Genting. I truly believe
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: it true. Whether I want them to or not a
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: different story, but they should. The take is there's a
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: lot of hidden yardage, the issues with the run blocking
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: that that I think Ramondre Stevenson is able to kind
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: of work around and hide because of his ability to
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: pick up yards after contact and because of his ability
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: to fall forward and to force the second defender to
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: make the play. They missed that big time in the
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: offensive line didn't reciprocate or didn't compensate for it. And
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: this is where we'll disagree because you'll say the running
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: backs don't matter. Not everybody falls forward like Ramandra Stevenson,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: and that showed up in this game.
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: So I would also just on your side of the
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: street because I don't want to be completely combative to
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: your take. Okay. It also just it chips in with
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: Antonio Gibson because now he's kind of playing a different
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: role right and he's playing a little bit more of
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: an early down base type of role.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: He's also just not a bowling bat.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: Right back or high volume back really ideally like maybe
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: for a game or two, it's fine, but I thought
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: it had an impact on him as well because now
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: he's playing early downs, he's playing third down like he's
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: playing a lot of football in this game. On Sunday,
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: I could I don't necessarily disagree with you. I can't like,
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: I don't have any major you know, pushback to what
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: you said. There's been a lot of criticism of a
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: VP yeah, all year, and some of it from the show,
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: So it's I'm not saying that it's it's not totally warranted.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: But in this game, they script the first fifteen plays
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: every game, right, that's the first fifteen is like sort
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: of their thing, so they there's a little bit of Christism.
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: Myself included. I wrote it in game observations. I didn't
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: love it, and then I thought about it some more
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: and I realized what really was going on. So they
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: run the ball twice to start this game, first and
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: second down, to your point, like they're thinking that at
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: the worst case scenario, they'll be in third and medium, right,
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: they'll be in third and four, three and five something
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: like that. Turns out they get one yard on first
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: and second down, So now it's third and nine. Now
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: they're three and out and they're punting. The very first
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: play of the next drive was the bootleg play to
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: Kendrick Boord. I actually felt like AVP learned from the
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: Jets game a little bit that I'm not gonna start
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: with the bootleg because we haven't set it up yet, right,
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: So I'm gonna run it twice. We'll pick up third down,
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: and then on first down we're gonna boot leg. And
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: that's how we're gonna get Drake into the game. Like,
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: that's how we're gonna give them an easy lay up
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: because to me, like the best thing to do with
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: the young quarterback has to give them a layup to
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: get them into the game, right, just giving them a
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: completion that is simple. One read exactly the throat of
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: bourn Like, that's exactly what you do with the young quarterback.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: It just they just went three and out, right, So
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: like they went out they If that had been the
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: fourth play of the opening drive, then I don't think
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: everybody would have been as critical of how the game started.
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: It just the first two plays were run plays and
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: they gained no yards on them. So I agree with
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: you and a lot of respects on that. I definitely
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: put more on the run blocking. But I hear what
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: you're saying, Uh.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: Well, I'm just like on that first series, maybe we're
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Monderick Seedson gets them more yards, yep, because again, like
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: I think there's hiden yards there. Maybe they do get
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: to third and five with Romandre right becomes an easier
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: pass on third down, and then that bootleg becomes the
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: fourth play, like the fourth the fourth play to drive right, right,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: because it's all scripted, so everything is it's all sequenced
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: together already. So that was always going to be their
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: fourth offensive play. Whether it happened on the first driver
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: or it happened on the second drive, that was going
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: to be their fourth offensive play. We all got on
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: a VP after the Jets game on Thursday, that Thursday
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: night game for calling play action before setting it up
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: right like that was the big criticism coming out of
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: that game.
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: This game, he's set it up. It just happened that
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: they didn't pick up the third down right, And so
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: that's the difference. All right, a couple more downs, just
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: the off ball linebacker play. It's just not good enough.
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: Ray quand McMillan and Janieva had both of them.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: They're gonna get to vie back on the edge. I
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: know they're probably Kendrick Bourne told us that there's a
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: plant's kind of easing back in, and he wasn't gonna
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: go right right to talking about Takias And yeah, so
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: Taki Taki hasn't told us that they're doing that, but
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: it would stand to reason that that's the situation. But
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: gotta get that ramp up going because they him and
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: and Christian Ellis are suddenly like you kind of need
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: those guys.
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll see about Christian Ellis in terms of early down,
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: I think he's a little small for that.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Well, they said he's gonna play more early down.
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: They gotta try some different things. That's the bottom line.
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: Ray Quan McMillan feels like, I hate to pick on him,
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: but it feels like every single week he's in the
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: middle of some big runs, like it's he's at the
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: point of the.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Sad they just he's so miscast right now to me.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: So I think he's an early down player. I think
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: right now he's overthinking things and like trying to do
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: too much. He's trying to cover up too much. He's
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: trying to be Juwan Bentley, right. It's what's surprising to
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: me with him is like be a hammer not a nail, right,
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: Like go out there and Bentley would do this all
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: the time. You might not be the one making the tackle,
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: but if you can be the one that's ruining the
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: blocking scheme, then that will allow somebody else to make
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: a tackle. So like on the big fifty nine yard run,
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: the first one, it's a wham play. They hit it backside,
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: they wham Devon Godshaw and they get a second level
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: climb to ray Kwan McMillan, Ray Kwan McMillan tries to
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: back door it. He tries to shoot the gap, you know, inside,
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: and he just misses. He misses the ball carrier and
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: it goes out and it's a fifty nine yard run.
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: Like I would so much rather see him try to
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: compress the space, like go into the blocker, like meet
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: the blocker in the hole and push him into the
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: edge so that way there there's less of a hole,
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: you know, compress the hole for the running back. And
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: then maybe you don't. Maybe you're not the one that
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: gets him on the ground, but maybe that gives you
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: Kean White an opportunity to make the tackle, or maybe
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: the safety coming from from depth over the top has
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: more time to get down there now and make the tackle.
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: It might still be an eight yard run, but it's
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: not a fifty nine yard run, right if something like
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: that happens. So I just think he's been timid and
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: just like not playing very it's in his head or
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: something like that. Their run fits from the second level.
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: They're they're constantly in each other's gaps, they're constantly over pursuing.
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: There's cutback lanes all over the place. From the second
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: level the defense, you know, not being sound with their fits.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: They can't get off blocks, like it's just ugly. It's
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: ugly right now. They don't cover well like their base defense,
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: Like they can't play bass against the pass because they
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: don't cover well in space. So whether it's Taki Taki,
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: it's a Ellis, it's whoever, like Joe Giles Harris from
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: the practice squad, like, yeah, whoever. They have to start
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: trying some different people there point blank. It's just not
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: gonna be good enough like this, Uh, do you have
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: another down right third?
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: But yeah, I kind of feel bad doing this because
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: I mean, he's putting in a bad spot. But Entrey
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: Jacobs was not good.
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: Yeah, him and Thomas were not good, but bad spot.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he got blown by a couple times,
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: almost almost at the point where it's like, dude, just hold,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: just hold if you're gonna get beat clean, Like, don't
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: let the kid get hit, right. But I actually thought
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: he was making some progress at right tackle the last
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: few weeks, and now he might have to Now he
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: might have to flip the left, which that makes me
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: really nervous. They got to start doing more to help
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: these tackles. Out, Yeah, because they are just putting guys
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: in bad situations.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: All right, last one for me, I know we're going
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: along on this and we'll get to the phones, I promise.
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: The last one for me was Jonathan Jones. Just I know,
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: I'm not ready to say that he's like declining or
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: any anything.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: Like Dell is a good freaking play.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: He's a good player. But five or five or seventy
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: one in a touchdown into Jonathan Jones' coverage in this game,
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: I just feel like teams are starting not to throw
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: a ton at Qrushian Gonzalez. They kind of know that that.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: What do you think of him?
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: So?
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: I thought that he was okay outside of like two
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: bad reps and two bad reps one goes for a
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: third big third down completion and one goes for a touchdown.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: But really, outside of that, there was really no damage.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: I think Diggs had the best game any receivers had
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: against Gonzales in his NFL career. Now, I think that
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: says more about Gonzalez because because it really it wasn't
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: this great game, but it like objectively rights one has
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: to be the most impressive digs just whatever it is
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: about the Patriots especially in Jelette Stadium, just gets digs going.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: I don't know if he's a big Lighthouse fan or whatever,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: but like it'll be interesting to see. So two things
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: for Gonzalez. I think he has to bounce back from
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: what was a objectively I think the best performance against him.
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: Okay, I think A. J. Brown was better, but that
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: was his very first game right in the NFL.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: This is also like, and look, I think Brian Thomas
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: Junior is a really good player. Yeah, but this is
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: also the first game where it's not like like the
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: Gauntlet's over, not over, I mean for the time next week,
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: but like, this is the first game where it's not like,
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: oh my god, he's going to an elite elite receiver
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: was right to monte Ada. Yeah, it's the first game
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: where it's not like, oh my god, he's going up
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: against that guy. So it'll be kind of interesting to
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: see how that plays.
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: Yeah. No, I mean, look, he's if you had him
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: on your downs list, I wouldn't like hold it against you.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: I didn't know, but like I didn't put him on
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: my downs, but like those, if you were to rank
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: his career performances, this is his last or second.
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: Aligne it's down by the bottom. It the one thing
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: I was just crazy. It wasn't that bad. Yeah, I
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: mean the stats are really it's like I think it
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: was like four for forty four in a touchdown, Like
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: it's not like a game of one hundred and fifty
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: yards into his coverage. He was. The thing I would
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: say about Gonzales is just red zone third down, Like
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: those are really big plays for this defense, and they
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: need him to be even better in those situations, right,
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: Like those are high leverage downs that they need three
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: points instead of seven points. So like that's that's a
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: big deal.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: And go back to camp. Sorry to go back to camp.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: And I think clearly at this point we made too
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: much of the struggles he was having a camp but
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: some of us. That was one area that definitely stood
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: out with some of the red zone stuff for him
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: where he was struggling.
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: Yeah, So the reason why I put Jonathan Jones on
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: there more than more than Gonzales A it was just
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: because the stats were worse, Like the numbers were worse,
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: But be what's what's gonna end up happening is that
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: if Gonzales continues to be really really good or even
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: if like that's a down game for Christian Gonzalez is
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: still pretty good. Teams are gonna start picking on the
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: other corners, right and they're gonna start coming after Marcus Jones,
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: Jonathan Jones, Marco Wilson, like, those are gonna be the
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: guys that are gonna be on teams radars now because
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: they're not gonna want to throw at Gonzales as much.
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: So Jonathan Jones is going to have a lot of attention.
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: He's going to get a lot of targets, He's going
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: to get a lot of action coming his way, and
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: he struggled in this campaign. Dal was a good receiver.
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: He is, but this was a down game from Jonathan Jones.
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: So those are our downs. Let's get to the phones.
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: I know you guys have been waiting on hold for
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: a while, so we apologize for that, and then we're
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: going to talk a little Jaguars here too, because I
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: have some takes about Jacksonville as well. But Patty is
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: an agaam. What's up Patty going on?
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: Gentlemen?
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: How you doing.
- 1:14:31Speaker 7: Good?
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: I just want to say something about May and I
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: got a question for both of you guys. May look
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: like a Rickie quarterback, but I got heat. For me,
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: he exceeded expectations because I didn't know what to expect
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: with the line. I was a little nervous, Like you know,
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: we all know how the lines look this year, but Havan,
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: you're thirty three percent pressure Yate. I think he does
- 1:14:54Speaker 5: definitely have something to do with that because he is
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: so athletic and man, he's always got a cannon. That's
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: all I gotta say. I like how they incorporated some
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: of the second year guys, like like Pop, Douglas and Booty.
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: The big question, big overall arching question for me is
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: do you guys think that before the end of the
- 1:15:18Speaker 5: year or hopefully within the next couple of games, we
- 1:15:20Speaker 5: see Polk get out of his own head because, like
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: you said, Ivan on Taput, it looks like he's getting open,
- 1:15:26Speaker 5: and you know, he was highly regarded for his hands.
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: Didn't catch the ball, hasn't caught the ball in the
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: last couple of weeks, and I would like to see
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: him progress and get better much like much like May
- 1:15:40Speaker 5: before the end of the year. And two part questions,
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: do you think he could possibly become a viable number
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: two guy? That's all I got because I want DK metcalf.
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: That's all I got. Guys.
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: Thanks, I appreciate the call as always. Yeah, I'm sure
- 1:15:54Speaker 3: you have a Jalen Polk take as well. My thing
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: with Jalen Polk is I'm actually in a weird way.
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: I'm like, glad this is what he's struggling with, because
- 1:16:03Speaker 3: I feel like this is turning almost into like a
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: yip situation where he'll get over it because he does
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: have great hands, and that is a calling card of his.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: I would be more concerned if he wasn't getting open,
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: because you can't. It's harder. It's almost like goes back
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: to the quarterback thing we were talking about. To me,
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: it's a lot harder to teach separation than it is
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: to teach a guy how to catch. Yeah, and I'll
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: give you a great example. Julian Edelman. Julian Edelman his
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: rookie training camp, could not catch cold. He dropped a
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: million passes. But he had the shiftiness, he had the
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: route running ability, he had the work ethic. He could
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: get open. So eventually he developed hands, or at least
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: good enough hands, and turn into a great receiver. It's
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: so much harder to teach the separation part of it.
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: Than it is to teach the hands. I'm glad that
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: Jalen Polk continues to get open. I thought he got
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: opened a couple times again in this game and just
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: dropped the ball. And they'll work on and he also,
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: you know, just wasn't targeted. It was away from the
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: ball in some instances. So they'll continue to work on that.
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: He'll be on the jugs machine. He'll you know, he'll
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: get it, you know, get it down. And I would
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: rather that problem. Then this guy is just not an
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: NFL athlete, like right, Like he just can't get open.
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: He can't separate, he can't run away from anybody. That's
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: not his problem right now.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say, hit the drugs machine this week,
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: and can they set up we talked about setting up
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: an easy one for Drake May. Can you set up
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: an easy one some sort of layup with your scheme
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: Jalen Polk open you know short, just pitch and catch
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: and the you don't want to turn into the yips
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: right right where Suddenly like now he doesn't get the
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: ball next week, Now he's worried about it. Now catching
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: is all he's thinking about, like as a receiver, like
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: catching the football needs to be second nature. Yeah, you
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: need to be more worried about your route, about your spacing,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: about things like that, like you just just catch the
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: ball in your sleep. So for Jalen Polk, it's it's
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: getting back to that. It's get one or two under
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: your belt, get a couple layups under your belt, and
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: we move on and you forget this ever happened.
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: Yep, absolutely, really quickly. But before they take the next call. Uh,
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: this is the weird I had trouble with last week
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: because I'm gonna try to do better this way.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: See it.
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: The long Falladay weekend is almost here, and you can
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: get ready for an epic Pats Jaguars matchup by hosting
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: a cozy watch party with your Bob's Discount furniture party
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: ready dining sets for your game day snacks, relaxing reclining
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: sectionals for your cheering section, bob opedic mattresses to dream
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: about the next game. When you shop the Bob's Dare
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: to Compare a Challenge, you'll find everything you need and
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: all the way for all and all for way less
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: than the competition. So stop in and see how much
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: you can save. When you Dare to compare with Bob's
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: Discount Furniture, the official furniture store of the New England Patriots.
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: That was better. I feel like that was better. I
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: got the Falladay down. That was when I had tough,
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: tough time.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: I thought that was last weekend though, Yeah, he did
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: a better. Know what today is?
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: I have no idea.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: National past today.
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: Oh it's a shame. The Bruins don't play shut out
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: David Pasternak. And he had a goal last night, right
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: he did score back door?
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: There we go?
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: Ye, all right, Jeff is in Maine. What's up, Jeff?
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: How you doing?
- 1:19:00Speaker 7: Guys?
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: Good?
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: So I got a couple of things. One, I know
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: you don't talk to fantasy, but I just wanted to
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: let you know that the Manhattan Project is sitting at
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: a proud four and two. Overcomes some adversity with Cooper
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: Cup and Nico Collins.
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: But death, it's good death.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: We're holding strong. I thought the same thing in the
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: game about Mayo potentially taking over the play calling. It's
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: just it seems like in a lot of games this year,
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: it's almost like the defense isn't prepared to adjust on
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: the fly to anything that they might do. It's like
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: the third or fourth game where they started incredibly slow,
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: and it seems like they haven't been able to adjust
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: till at least the second quarter. And in terms of
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: the only real question I've got, uh, I know that
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: AVP and Borne talked about Booty working harder and being
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: better in practice, but from a film side of things,
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: I was wondering what differences physically you've noticed. Obviously his
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: freshman year, he just dominated the SEC and then he
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: tested like crap because he was hurt. Rookie year didn't
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: do that much. I mean, I don't study the film,
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: but I didn't notice anything particularly outstanding physically. And then
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: this past week he I know there was some hand
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: fighting and he was sitting on the route, but he
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: ran by Derek Stingley, who's a four to three corner
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: and probably a top ten or twelve corner in the league.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: So I was just wondering what you guys have seen
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: from him physically that might make a difference in how
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: he's been playing. And I'll take it off the air.
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: Thanks guys, Thanks Jenn, thanks for the call. So with
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: Jay with Kaish on Booty, excuse me, I I got
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: to apologize to kaishon Boody. I was not familiar with
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: your game, right, Like, I really wasn't a big a
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: big booty guy. No, no pun intended.
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: Yeah, the first one to make that joke.
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I wasn't a big kishon booty guy. I
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: hate that we do that where like you know how
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: much I love Pop Douglas from start to finish, you know,
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: draft and everything, and then it always kind of comes
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: off like you hate the other guy, you know, like
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: that's that's just sort of the way that those things work.
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: I wasn't a big kishon booty guy. I didn't necessarily
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: see this coming from him, that he was all of
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: a sudden going to be like a core contributor to
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: the offense. I don't think physically he looks all that different.
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: I just think mentally he looks more locked in, and
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: he looks more just like sure of himself and confident
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: on an NFL field, which is great to see, like
- 1:21:42Speaker 3: he's playing great, Like it's not the production isn't crazy.
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: Like he made two catches I think in this game.
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: One of them was obviously a forty yard touchdown, which
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: is huge, but it's it's really one big play. But
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: at the same time, you know, he's he's blocking well,
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: he's making big plays down the field. I think his
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: confidence is a little bit better than it was maybe
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: you know, last season, earlier even this season, and the
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: late speed on Stingley showed up. You know, the ball
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: was in the air and he pulled away from Derek
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: Stingley on the touchdown. I didn't necessarily know if he
- 1:22:12Speaker 3: had that in his back either, not just because of
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: the forty time, but just you know, he was more
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: of like a first and second level guy at LSU.
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: Even when he was playing well, it was like those
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: slants and stuff like that over the middle of the field.
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: So he deserves credit. He's worked his butt off, is
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: what everybody keeps telling us, like born Pop Avp, like
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: all these guys are saying that he flipped a switch
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: and he started really working his tail off behind the scenes,
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: and I love seeing that, Like, good, good for him,
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: kudos to him.
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: Yeah, and I really wit Like if you remember back
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: when we did that draft, I was really high on
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: Kishan Boody at the beginning. I wish I knew and
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: I don't know why he ran a forty with the
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: bust at ankle, but he did. I wish I knew
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: that at the time, because I wouldn't have backed off
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: my I would have been I would have stayed as
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: strong on the take that like he should be a
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: target for the Patriot. It's the thing with me, and
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: every time we got these calls about him in the
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: spring and the summer, like the talent has always been there,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: just hasn't been there consistently.
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: Yeah, like you.
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: See what the guy's capable of, but he would have
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: like one big day of practice and you wouldn't see
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: him again for a week, and then you have a
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: big day and then you wouldn't see him. And you
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: just have to be consistent in the NFL. He's consistent
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: right now, like you're seeing it day in, you're seeing
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: it game in and game out. And I would think
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: the fact that his playtime is not just steady but
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: increasing tells me that that being reflected at practice as well.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: And that's what's big for him. Like the whole thing
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: last year was there was no consistency to it. He
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: wasn't a reliable player. The skill set was clear, but
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: you just didn't know that he was going to give you.
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: His top performance came in and came out. Now you're
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: starting to see that, and now you're starting to see
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: some of what made him such an exciting player at LSU.
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: And that's what's big for me is just you talk
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: about him being more locked in, like, yeah, I just
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: think he's more focused, and I think it's probably a
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: better environment for him. I do wonder how much it
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: messed with his confidence last year that he doesn't get
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: that foot down in the opener and then suddenly doesn't
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: get the play right right. I think that probably impacted him,
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: and I think that the internal belief in him has
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: led to more confidence, and that in turn has led
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: to him being more focused. And he's just in a
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: good place right now and you love to see it.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: And he's got to keep it up, obviously, But this
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: is a guy that has a ton of talent and
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: he's finally a position to showcase it. He's doing that, Yeah, him,
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: that's what's all about.
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: Yeah, and winning on the vertical routree a lot too,
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: like whether it's like stops or comebacks, and then obviously
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: goes their verticals like that. That part of his game.
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: I wasn't really what he did at LSU.
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: No, he's a middle of the field or super at LSU,
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: which is part of what excites me because if he's
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: now establishing this vertical stuff, you can build off of that,
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: and you know, if teams are going to have to
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: play off of them, he'll take He'll run slants. You
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: can run him on slants all day. Yeah, and he'll
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: take one of the house. If you throw him five
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: or six slants, he'll break one of them up the
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: field for a big gain, if not a touchdown.
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: So because that's what he was doing in LSU, Right,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: So what's cool about this is like, he's not that
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: guy you think of on the for forty yard go ball,
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: Like that's not who he is.
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: No, So I agree, if.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: He's doing that, there's so much more you can build
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: off of that. And now let's see how they do it.
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean this goes back to what I was
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: kind of saying about Drake May with the man coverage stuff. Like,
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: now if you see more off or you see more
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: like soft zone because of that, he's just gonna start
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: running unders and slants and things.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: And Kaisehan Booty is the guy like get the the
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: like ceiling ceiling com form in that draft. Do you
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: remember who it was I know ceiling ceiling sitting was
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: Debo because kind of like this big strong receiver that's
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: a ceiling I said, ceiling seat you get, But but
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: do you see where like like I could see what
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: people were saying with that, and I never thought he
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: was gonna be Deebo. But it's like, if you get
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: him the ball in space, he's a problem, not the
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: way they've got like Pop Douglas is a problem, or
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: not in the way that Julie Edelman is a problem.
- 1:26:06Speaker 3: He's a type of guy, right.
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: He's a big, physical ball carrier that when he gets
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: ahead of steam, you're probably not going to tackle him
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: one on one. So when if you can get him
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: going over the middle of the field underneath and set
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: up situations where he's catching the ball in space, like
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: he's going to be able to do things off of that. Yeah,
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: I'm not saying he's Deebo. I'm not saying he's going
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: to be Debo. But that was like the the player
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: proto type, the apex of that prototype.
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: This is this is very different from Debo, Like this
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: is outside receivers.
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: Well, that's what I'm saying. The goal ball is like,
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: all right, that is not what I thought he was
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: like if to me him having success, wasn't that to
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: me him having success?
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: Douglas catch and run stuff, right, Yeah, you know he's
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: vertical routes like he's running corners, he's running verticals, he's
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: running comebacks a lot of the time, or like stop
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: routes along the sideline off that vertical action, and like
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: he's getting open on these routes, and it's it's good
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: to see you. Like I said, you know, you start
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: to get teams to back off now a little bit.
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: They start to fear the deep ball a little bit
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: more with Drake May and now all of a sudden,
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: all that underneath stuff is gonna is gonna be open
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: and they're gonna be able to get him the ball
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: that way. So it's encouraging to see. They needed somebody
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: because you have Pop who needs to play in the
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: slot ruh Jalen Polk's really a flanker, like he's really
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: a z or an off the line receiver. And then
- 1:27:28Speaker 3: you have Kendrick Bourne who's really like a flanker off
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: the line receiver too. So to get those four guys
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: on the you know, in the mix together, somebody had
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: to play the X like somebody had to play outside.
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: They've had to play Jalen Polk there a lot more
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: than I think they want to. And if Kaishan Boody
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: can continue this, then maybe he can be a more
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: permanent X and allow those other guys to play to
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: their restraints and play to their skill sets. So it's
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: it's good to see it.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: And just on Kishan Boody, one more thing before he
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: fell off in that twenty two year, you take that out.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: His freshman year when he broke out, he averaged eight
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: yards after the catch, yeah, per reception. He followed it
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: up with seven. The next year he had over half
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: his yards after the catch. So not a guy you
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: think of that catches, you know, forty yard touchdown, catches
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: it at the one from thirty nine yards away. Not
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: usually who he is, but if he can add it, great.
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: Phil is in Coventry. What's up, Phil?
- 1:28:24Speaker 7: Hey? How you guys doing?
- 1:28:26Speaker 8: Hey?
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: Good?
- 1:28:28Speaker 7: Oh well, you're totally ruined my leaving things because I
- 1:28:32Speaker 7: was going to talk about case Sean and now I
- 1:28:36Speaker 7: kind of been been a fan since they drafted him
- 1:28:40Speaker 7: and waiting for him come out and finally doing it.
- 1:28:43Speaker 7: But I guess we can do that with Drake May.
- 1:28:46Speaker 7: And I'm kind of considering that, thinking that Drake May
- 1:28:53Speaker 7: is kind of like, uh, crap, don't see his cat? Hello, Hello, yep,
- 1:29:06Speaker 7: And you know, because it's I'm assuming you guys are
- 1:29:12Speaker 7: aware of the theory of uh, they put the cat
- 1:29:16Speaker 7: in the box shoating his cat. Excuse me.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: We've actually done Schrodinger's Cat on the show before. I
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: don't remember what it was. We did it and I
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: said it was I said something. I said it was
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: like a psychological thing or philosophical No, that was different.
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: It was around there, No Schrodinger's Cat.
- 1:29:33Speaker 7: What it is is you put a cat in a
- 1:29:36Speaker 7: box with a vile of poison.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: Theoretically, you don't actually do that. It's a theoretically yes.
- 1:29:43Speaker 7: We are not we're not. We're not you know, saying
- 1:29:46Speaker 7: that this is good to do or anything, and we
- 1:29:49Speaker 7: don't do that. But but at that point, nobody knows
- 1:29:55Speaker 7: whether or not the cat is taking the poison. So
- 1:29:58Speaker 7: you don't know if the cat is alive or dead
- 1:30:01Speaker 7: until you open the box. And I think that everyone
- 1:30:05Speaker 7: needs to, you know, put breaks on with Drake May.
- 1:30:11Speaker 7: We cover on for a little bit and until we
- 1:30:15Speaker 7: really want to open it up and see what we
- 1:30:18Speaker 7: got because this is only one week, you know, and
- 1:30:22Speaker 7: it's gonna be tough even this week without Romandre Vina,
- 1:30:26Speaker 7: you know, and having the running game going on and
- 1:30:28Speaker 7: all of that. So the other thing I wanted to
- 1:30:32Speaker 7: ask you guys about is, uh, I believe there's an
- 1:30:36Speaker 7: edge rusher in on the Eagles that we may be
- 1:30:42Speaker 7: able to grab and sign and you know, I mean
- 1:30:46Speaker 7: kind of help out the defense a little bit take
- 1:30:49Speaker 7: place of Judaan.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: You talk about Sondick, and.
- 1:30:54Speaker 7: I believe it is.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: Yes, the Jets, I don't think the division viable.
- 1:31:00Speaker 7: Whether that's uh you know what're talking about.
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for the call, Phil, I appreciated and uh,
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: I agree with it with his his what's what's the cat?
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: Schrodinger's cat. So it's a it's a thought experiment. It's
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: basically if I'm I know.
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: He got it, he got it, I get it. It's
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: a little premature, id to start crowning him. We're not
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: fitting Drake may for any Red Jackets yet, but.
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: I feel like starting him was opening the box.
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: Uh. I think starting him was putting him in the box, right.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: No, drafting him was putting him in the box.
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: No, starting him was putting him in the box, because
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: now he's in the box with the poison and we're
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: and we're trying to figure out what we have.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: But the whole point is you're not observing it. We're
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: observing Drake Mane. It's it's about observation. If I know
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: this correctly, Okay, I got I got in trouble last
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: time because I got this wrong. Like I understand the concept.
- 1:31:50Speaker 3: This is definitely more your side of the street. I
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: have no idea what we're talking.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: About, so I would say I would guess, and people
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: in the YouTube comments, I'm sure'll correct me.
- 1:31:58Speaker 3: This is not Yankee concepts.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: Him is putting him in the box. We've now like
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: opened up the box. But it's not instant. That's the difference.
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: This is like an instant thing. You'd see it, yes
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: or no. It's not gonna be instant with Drake.
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: May Okay, to his last point about Hasan reddick that
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: that's probably not happening because he's with technically with the Jets.
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: But I do have a The trade deadline is on
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: election day this year, November fourth, right.
- 1:32:23Speaker 8: Day.
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: I know it's that too.
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: Other day I pulled that date out of my fifth
- 1:32:27Speaker 3: November fifth, I was close. I do kind of have
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: a take on on the trade deadline, and maybe I
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: don't know if this is going to be popular. I
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: actually think I might be in the minority here if
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: I was the Patriots. I'm not totally out on the
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: Patriots buying players at the deadline. The main reason why,
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: and it's a certain specific type of player, like let
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: me put it, let me be clear about that. They're
- 1:32:57Speaker 3: not like I agree wholeheartedly that like DeVante Adams had
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: made no sense for them. Amari Cooper I don't think
- 1:33:04Speaker 3: made a ton of sense for them either. But if
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: we get to the trade deadline, and I'm just gonna
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: use this as an example because it's a common example.
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: If we get to the trade deadline, which is November fifth,
- 1:33:14Speaker 3: so we're a couple weeks away, and the Cincinnati Bengals
- 1:33:19Speaker 3: are two and six, Yeah, and they don't feel like
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: they're gonna be pulling out of this nosedive that they're in.
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: They're not pulling up the plane, nose of the plane.
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: Joe Burrow's like low Ki having an MVP season.
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and they're terrible.
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: Yeah, it's weird.
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: So I am not totally against the Patriots trading for
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: T Higgins because that's not an investment for to put
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: you over the top in twenty twenty four. That is
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: a future investment to build this rock.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: So basically what the Bears did last year with was
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: it Montes sweat right.
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: Good example.
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: So I'm I'm with you as long as that comes
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: with an extension. I wouldn't during the We're gonna trade
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: for now and hope he likes a year so we
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: can resign him in the spring.
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: I'm talking about making an investment for the future.
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it's got to come with an ext I'm with you,
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: But I think they can do both.
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: Like sure, I think this is a rare occasion where
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: both actually could make some sense.
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Uh, Like I actually think I know people are
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: really down on kJ Osbourne. Yeah, I actually think kJ
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: Osborne has value to a contending team because.
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: He's an NFL receiver.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: He's not always an NFL receiver. Like you see what
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: he can do when he's next to guys like Justin Jefferson,
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: Jordan Addison, yeh in the coverage isn't being dictated towards him.
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: That's obviously not the case. Here, even if you add
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: t Higgins, that's probably not the case here. But if
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: even if Minnesota has an injury, maybe they want to
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: back or another one of these teams. Right, maybe you're
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: not gonna tram him the Jets in the division. But
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: like if team like the Jets replacing Mike Williams or
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: somebody as an injury, like I think you can get
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: something for kJ Osborn. Maybe not gonna get top one
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: hundred pick, but you get a fifth round pick that
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: plays into a trade next year or something. So like
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: you know, I I think both makes sense. I also
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: just think, you know, opening up or off spots for
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: younger guys. How happy is Taekwon Thornton here right now?
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: Probably not? Like he's getting passed over left and right.
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: Can you just get him off the roster he gets
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: to go somewhere where he's gonna play. You get even
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: if it's a conditional seventh, and then you get to elevate,
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: you know, somebody from the practice squad, or you create
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: more snaps for somebody else. I think both makes sense.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: Like I would not be opposed to them looking for
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: that Monteese sweat sort of trade. I'd probably only do
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: it for a receiver, maybe an edge rusher.
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: Or a tackle.
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: It's just not gonna happen. Yeah, in theory, but that's not.
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: Okay, I'm not one hundred percent sure it's not gonna
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: happen at tackle because this is like the pre agent thing, right,
- 1:35:37Speaker 3: Like you look at some of those guys. I think
- 1:35:39Speaker 3: Garrett Bowles is getting a little bit up there in age.
- 1:35:41Speaker 3: He's like thirty two, thirty one, thirty two years old,
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: so maybe not him. But like in Jacksonville, Cam Robinson
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: they're starting left tackle, is a really solid player. He's
- 1:35:50Speaker 3: gonna be a free agent next offseason. Who knows what
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: the Jaguars. Where the Jaguars are going.
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I just think if I'm one of those guys,
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: I mean I'm hitting the market, okay.
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: But my point being, no, in general, like we can
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: throw out names because.
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: I would do it for a tackle, I just wouldn't
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: count on it.
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: Yeah, it's important to put the name a name to
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: the claim and not just like throw hot air out.
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: There because you say that, like you say, oh, you know,
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: maybe they trade for a tackle deadline and then we
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: get a million questions about every tackle in the league.
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: Remember that guy that called in and wanted them to
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: trade for Pina Seoul. Yes, Like that's what I'm trying
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: to say that. It's like, sure, you know, there's realistic
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: conversation you can have about receivers and edge rushers. I
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: don't think you can realistically have that. You can be
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: open to it, but I don't think you can realistically
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: have that conversation for an edge rusher.
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: So my point with this take though, just to put
- 1:36:38Speaker 3: a bow on it, the Patriots should be in the
- 1:36:41Speaker 3: talent acquisition business. Yes, and you know me, I'm a
- 1:36:47Speaker 3: pseudo FM picks kind of guy. Yeah, I'm not touching
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: your first or your second round pick. Those are gonna
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: be top five to ten picks in those rounds. You're
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: not touching those picks.
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: I think. Don't you have to trade the second for Higgins?
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: Though probably.
- 1:37:02Speaker 3: Maybe? I mean he's technically a rental, Like I don't know,
- 1:37:08Speaker 3: Maybe I would put the second round pick on the
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: table for Higgins.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: If you can do Higgins for the third, Like, hell, yeah.
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: Maybe I put the second round pick. I'm not like
- 1:37:16Speaker 3: necessarily thinking about it.
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: Like this this deep, but like that you have to
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: write if you're gonna say, well.
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: My point is is just in general, Yeah, like we
- 1:37:25Speaker 3: and I this is just a philosophical belief in mine.
- 1:37:28Speaker 3: We put way too much emphasis on these draft picks
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: sometimes and we treat them like they are this like
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: slam dunk commodity. And I get that it's an imperfect science.
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: And like you could, I could say, you know, Yadney
- 1:37:44Speaker 3: could justin. You could say Fred Warner right, like, you know,
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: we could do this all day long. But the point
- 1:37:50Speaker 3: is is that those picks are only as valuable as
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: the player they turned into. And what we've learned here
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: over the last couple of years is that sometimes those
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: picks end up being completely not NFL players. And if
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: I'm the Patriots, you know, the Montes sweat trade, I
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: didn't even think of that as such a great example.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: Like that's literally what you're describing.
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: They should be about stacking talent on this roster, not
- 1:38:16Speaker 3: about oh, like maybe we'll draft Jake Andrews in the
- 1:38:20Speaker 3: fourth round next year.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: So what if it's more about like I don't entirely disagree,
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: but all right, so t Higgins the receiver available to deadline? Yeah,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: what happens if like, like, all right to move your
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: second for Higgins? And I get to the offseason and
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: DK Metcalf's available, or maybe Bill goes to Dallas and
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: realize it's not gonna work with Ceedee Lamb and he
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: becomes available, or I don't eame a receiver, right.
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I hear what you like.
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: I don't think you can count on that, though I
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: almost feel like he can. I know you can't, Like
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: I know you can't, but.
- 1:38:54Speaker 3: You're not gonna get this DK Metcalf thing out of
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: your head?
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: Has there? Well? I to be fair, I'm kind of
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: using DK Metcalf as a placeholder because I think he's
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: the most realistic. But when was there a period in
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: the last five years in the NFL when a star
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: receiver wasn't at least available and I acknowledged that they
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: didn't all move?
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: Yeah, ultimately right like two years ago, like Hopkins was
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: like the best receiver that ended up being available. There
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: was no like splash wide.
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: Okay, so I guess that. But like if we were
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: sitting here in and we wouldn't have been because the
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: team is in a different spot. But if we were
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: sitting here in like I think it was what twenty
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: twenty two, Oh no, it would have made sense, all right,
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: they need a receiver for mac Jones. Yeah, And I
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: had said, what if they trade for Tyreek Killed, you
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: would have kicked me off the show. I understand what
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: you would have kicked you and said, what are you
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: talking about? That is the top five most untouchable player.
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: But isn't that the point that we're both Like, we're
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: both kind of making the same point, because like my
- 1:39:55Speaker 3: whole thing is is that I just wouldn't overvalue the
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: picks because because right now the Patriots don't need draft picks,
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: they need Town.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: So I would I I'm agreeing with you on that, Like,
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: I'm not against trading it when it was twenty two
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: that he'll get traded. I guess my point is more,
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: I'm not against trading the pick for a player. I'm
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: totally on board with that. Yeah, you might have more options,
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: Like once you trade that pick, that's it. That's the
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: player you end up with. And if it's t Higgins
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: or nobody at the deadline, and then you get to
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: the offseason and there's four or five guys available to
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: you that are better than Higgins, like it's well, you know,
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: we rush to make the move and we missed out.
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: On a better player. I'm not against that. Now if
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: you can do it for a third. Now, now maybe
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: you get Higgins for a third, and then you do
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: go out and get DK Metcalf for a second, and
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: now you're really I mean, you probably get it.
- 1:40:49Speaker 3: But like if you talk about it from Cincinnati's perspective,
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: just to play out the T Higgins thing. But again,
- 1:40:53Speaker 3: I just like, philosophically, I just really believe strongly that
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: you don't pass up opportunities to bring in talented.
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: So okay, so this is where we're going to disagree.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: I don't disagree with trading the pick. I believe philosophically
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: there's always more talent available in the offseason. Like I
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: am not a huge fan of like big It is
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: kind of across all.
- 1:41:17Speaker 3: But the one difference about the off season though, right
- 1:41:20Speaker 3: is that the pool of teams that have the flexibility
- 1:41:24Speaker 3: now to make that type of move increases. And I
- 1:41:27Speaker 3: think the one situation that the Patriots are in right
- 1:41:30Speaker 3: now is that it's hard to convince people to come.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: So what I would say is there are the teams
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: that can make that move, but the Patriots pick is
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: probably gonna be higher than most of those teams.
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: But this is all true, just all the things in
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: the last off.
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: No, no, but it's not let me finish. The Patriots
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: pick is gonna be hired in most teams. You get
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: more money to offer, more money to offer than most teams.
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: All right, you want what changed your guy? This was
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: the whole thing about play the kid.
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: But my guy could he could be great. We're on
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: his own without any trades or out any moves or
- 1:41:59Speaker 3: any anything like that. But you're it's probably still gonna
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: be what it was on Sunday, where there's gonna be
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: some ups and there's gonna be some day.
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: I think you can still sell a receiver on what
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: you saw on Sunday.
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: I agree, but I'm biased, Like I think the kid's awesome.
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: So like I'm biased, right, but like I just I
- 1:42:19Speaker 3: just am saying that I wouldn't I wouldn't mind that.
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: And I also think that there's value, Like, yes, if
- 1:42:27Speaker 3: they traded for a guy like t Higgins at the deadline,
- 1:42:30Speaker 3: are they all of a sudden get to rattle off
- 1:42:32Speaker 3: like six or whatever, how many maybe weeks they're left,
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: you know, eight straight wins to end the season. No,
- 1:42:38Speaker 3: so you're not gonna completely change the course of your
- 1:42:41Speaker 3: franchise with that move. But there's value in well, now
- 1:42:45Speaker 3: we have T Higgins for the next four years on
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: this team because we signed him to a mega extension
- 1:42:50Speaker 3: after doing this trade. Now we maybe have some momentum
- 1:42:55Speaker 3: going into your two of Drake may because he has
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: T Higgins for the second half of you or one,
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: and all of a sudden, like the offense looks like
- 1:43:02Speaker 3: a legit offense and we're going into your two with
- 1:43:07Speaker 3: maybe we win three out of the last six or
- 1:43:09Speaker 3: four out of the last six, or whatever the case
- 1:43:12Speaker 3: may be. I just I don't necessarily I hear a
- 1:43:16Speaker 3: lot of and this is why I brought it up
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: that like they should just start selling all their players,
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: And I agree with you that maybe it could be
- 1:43:23Speaker 3: in the middle, like a little bit sell on the margins.
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: I wouldn't move. I've seen people talk about moving like
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: I like Andre Stevenson, Hunter, Henry No. We've seen people
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: say like like Devon got Like if you want to,
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: I wouldn't do that.
- 1:43:39Speaker 3: And I don't mean to, you know, pick on anybody
- 1:43:41Speaker 3: in particular, but like if you wanted to trade right then.
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: Fine, josh Uch, I'll use Taekwon Thornton because we've heard
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: his name in trade rumors, right, you know, don't trade
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: any of the core guys. But yeah, that's but I
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: just I don't know. I like, get to the off
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: season and I think you'll have more options, and I
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: think that's something. Now people are, oh, you're just excusing
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: them not making yal know, if they don't make the
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: move this offseason, I'm gonna be upset.
- 1:44:08Speaker 3: But like my fear about move and then we can
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: we should move on. But my fear about waiting until
- 1:44:13Speaker 3: the off season is that you increase the pool of
- 1:44:16Speaker 3: teams that that can get involved. And he's yet you
- 1:44:21Speaker 3: we had this issue with Calvin Ridley, they had this
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: issue with Brandon Nyuk, and maybe Drake May does enough
- 1:44:27Speaker 3: that it changes all of that. But you can have
- 1:44:30Speaker 3: the highest draft pick, you can have the most money. Yeah,
- 1:44:33Speaker 3: and Brandon Ayyuk can give you two birds and say
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: I'm not coming here.
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: What if? But then, like, what's stopping T Higgins from
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: doing that? Now? I don't think that changes.
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: I don't think it necessarily because if you for TI Higgins.
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: Like I said, you can't trade for T Higgins without
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: signing him to an extension.
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: I'm not saying it necessarily changes for T. Higgins, but
- 1:44:49Speaker 3: if the Bengals want to sell T Higgins in season,
- 1:44:53Speaker 3: there's fewer teams that can legitimately make that move, like logistically, but.
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: If Higgins comes to you and says, well, I wan't
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: sign an extension.
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: Again, I just think it's like, I just think that
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: it could be easier because the amount of teams that
- 1:45:06Speaker 3: have the money and the flexibility.
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: I think better because he's going to look at it
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: and say, no, I want to hit the market. I
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: want I want people bidding for me. I want a competition.
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: I want to drive the price up.
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: Okay, but if you offer him thirty million dollars a year,
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: then you're not going to get a better price than that.
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: Is what they want of These guys just want They
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: just want to see it. They want the bidding more.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: They want to be wooed.
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: I think we're kind of on the same page where
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: it's yeah, this is a philosophical yeah, but I wouldn't
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: be upset if they traded for Higgins.
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: All right, let's get to the rest of these calls.
- 1:45:36Speaker 3: John is in Boston. What's up, John, Hey.
- 1:45:39Speaker 7: How's it going.
- 1:45:40Speaker 6: Hey, I just want to ask about stilting his cat. Okay, now,
- 1:45:47Speaker 6: I'm just kidding that's a joke. But what I actually
- 1:45:50Speaker 6: want to ask about was, I've been really disappointed by
- 1:45:54Speaker 6: what I've seen in Michael Lenhu. I think when you're
- 1:45:57Speaker 6: paying a guard eighteen million dollars a year, you.
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: He's got it.
- 1:46:02Speaker 6: Especially when he's two hundred and fifty pounds. He has
- 1:46:04Speaker 6: to be an impact run blocker where you know that
- 1:46:07Speaker 6: you run it behind that guy, you're gonna be able
- 1:46:10Speaker 6: to get three yards every time. And I just haven't
- 1:46:13Speaker 6: seen that from him, And I think that he's a
- 1:46:15Speaker 6: guy that just deserves a lot more criticism. And I
- 1:46:17Speaker 6: just wanted to hear what you guys thought about that.
- 1:46:21Speaker 3: Thanks for the calle, John. I didn't even hear what
- 1:46:22Speaker 3: he said. Was the first thing that he Oh, okay, John,
- 1:46:26Speaker 3: thanks for the call. Yeah, I agree. I agree with
- 1:46:29Speaker 3: I've had him on the downs a couple of times recently,
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: had him on the downs last week because I thought
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: he gave up pressure on the Jalen Polk touchdown. That
- 1:46:37Speaker 3: ever was I agree, Like, I don't think he's been
- 1:46:41Speaker 3: an eighteen nineteen million dollar a year player right now.
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: He hasn't I do put some of it on the
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: coaching staff, because all right, so they signed him as a.
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: Tackle, they keep moving.
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: He spends the whole offseason at tackle, comes into camp,
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: gets moved to guard, then later in camp he gets
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: moved to tackle, then he goes back inside to guard,
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: and now this week he's probably going back outside tackle.
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: Like he can't comfort anywhere, he can't build any chemistry
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: with anybody, he can't get in a rhythm. So like
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: I'm not saying he's been good. I just and and
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: you may have to write this season off. It may
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: be too much at this point, but like, yeah, next
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: year and this is gonna be what year six of
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: me saying this, can we please please pick a position
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: for Mike and WNU and leave them there?
- 1:47:19Speaker 3: But the problem that the reason why this is happening,
- 1:47:21Speaker 3: and I'm not you're right, like I'm not arguing.
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: With you, Oh is happening.
- 1:47:25Speaker 3: But the reason why this is happening is because they
- 1:47:30Speaker 3: don't have anybody options, right, so.
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: They won't address the tackle. Oh no, I agree with you. Yeah,
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: So all right, so let me reface that. Can we
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: please next year make sure that the tackle position is set, right,
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: so you can put Mike on WINU at guard and
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: leave them there. Yeah, is that better? Okay, yes, that's
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: but like, can we create a situation in which Mike
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: and WNU doesn't become the the last resort savior for
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: the offensive line and has to you know, boomerang back
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: and forth between positions.
- 1:47:59Speaker 3: Yeah, that was the I agree with you that he
- 1:48:01Speaker 3: deserves some grace because of that. Yeah, because a lot
- 1:48:04Speaker 3: of the issues that I'm seeing with him at guard
- 1:48:06Speaker 3: are like he's kind of caught between playing guard like
- 1:48:10Speaker 3: tackle almost where like with guard, everything happens a lot
- 1:48:14Speaker 3: faster on the inside, so guys are on you quicker.
- 1:48:17Speaker 3: You know, you're not out in as much space, right,
- 1:48:20Speaker 3: So like when that happens, you know, he's getting guys
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: are getting into his chest, and he's getting on skates
- 1:48:24Speaker 3: a little bit at times playing guard because he's like,
- 1:48:27Speaker 3: oh crap, Like this is happening a lot faster in
- 1:48:29Speaker 3: here right than it does out there, So week to
- 1:48:32Speaker 3: week it changes. You know, He's talked to us a
- 1:48:33Speaker 3: few times over the course of the year, and that's
- 1:48:36Speaker 3: always his thing. I don't care if it's tackle, right
- 1:48:39Speaker 3: tackle or right guard. Wherever they feel like I'm my
- 1:48:43Speaker 3: best or that is best for the team. I'm willing
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: to do. He just wants it to be one position.
- 1:48:49Speaker 3: He doesn't want it to be keep being this inside
- 1:48:52Speaker 3: outside inside outside, brought hole. Yeah, like he's a utility man.
- 1:48:56Speaker 3: It's a good way of putting it, all right. Aaron
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: is in Connecticut. What's up, Aaron? Aaron? Aaron going once?
- 1:49:06Speaker 3: All right, call us back. I don't think he's there.
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: Kendall is in North Carolina. What's up Kendall?
- 1:49:12Speaker 9: Hey, what's going on?
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: God? Hey y'all doing good?
- 1:49:14Speaker 3: Hey?
- 1:49:16Speaker 9: I wanted to get asked about the Jaguars. Man, how
- 1:49:18Speaker 9: do you think I'm thick with the whole defense matches
- 1:49:21Speaker 9: up to get his Jaguars? I know they are what
- 1:49:23Speaker 9: one and five and Tiva Lawrence. I don't think he's
- 1:49:26Speaker 9: played that bad, but which I'll think about the matchup
- 1:49:29Speaker 9: to get those receivers in tight end.
- 1:49:30Speaker 3: Thanks thanks for the call. Ken. I'm glad you put
- 1:49:33Speaker 3: us on the Jaguars because I did want to do
- 1:49:35Speaker 3: that before we wrapped up the show. Uh, he asked
- 1:49:38Speaker 3: about the defense, so we can start there. Uh this
- 1:49:40Speaker 3: to me, first of all, I just want to say
- 1:49:42Speaker 3: I watched her last two games on film, and I
- 1:49:45Speaker 3: think Trevor Horns is playing fine. Look, I really don't
- 1:49:48Speaker 3: think he's the issue.
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: He was reacting to pressure a little weird for a
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: couple of games. But besides that, yeah, he's.
- 1:49:53Speaker 3: Been He doesn't look he doesn't look like sped up
- 1:49:56Speaker 3: or broken his mechanics. His lower half is still excellent
- 1:50:00Speaker 3: like it always has been.
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: It had what was it five passes six passes dropped
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: in the end zone last.
- 1:50:06Speaker 3: Week they had three passes dropped.
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: In the end zone on the same drive, the same drive. Yeah,
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: you know that, and then it was like five or
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: six total.
- 1:50:11Speaker 3: So, uh, he's second has his receivers have dropped the
- 1:50:15Speaker 3: second most passes of any quarterback in the league. He
- 1:50:18Speaker 3: has fourteen drops on the season already in six games.
- 1:50:21Speaker 3: I think he's playing great. I really do. In terms
- 1:50:26Speaker 3: of matchups, and I wrote game plan today. It's up
- 1:50:29Speaker 3: on Patriots dot com. I'm sure your previous coming if
- 1:50:31Speaker 3: it's not up already tomorrow morning. The biggest thing I
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: look at with matchups is I actually kind of feel
- 1:50:36Speaker 3: like this is one of those games where the outside receivers,
- 1:50:40Speaker 3: you know, Kirk is kind of his own thing. Uh,
- 1:50:42Speaker 3: But Davis and Brian Thomas Junior BTJ are pretty similar,
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: Like their target sharers are similar, their rout trees are similar. Uh,
- 1:50:51Speaker 3: they're both vertical deep threats down the field. Like I
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: don't My point is is, I don't necessarily know if
- 1:50:56Speaker 3: this is a big shadow game, like you have to
- 1:51:00Speaker 3: put Christian Gonzalez on player X, like you have to
- 1:51:04Speaker 3: put Christianganzalez on Stefan Diggs, or you have to put
- 1:51:06Speaker 3: Christian Gonzalez on you know, Tyreek Hill right Like this
- 1:51:12Speaker 3: to me feels like those two guys and I obviously
- 1:51:15Speaker 3: BTJ has a higher ceiling just because he's a rookie,
- 1:51:17Speaker 3: but they're pretty redundant as of right now of who
- 1:51:21Speaker 3: they are. Christian Kirk in the slot worries me a
- 1:51:23Speaker 3: little bit because he's like one of those thicker like
- 1:51:26Speaker 3: vertical type of slot receivers, Like he's not like a
- 1:51:29Speaker 3: Pop Douglas jitterbug type of slot. But I don't necessarily
- 1:51:33Speaker 3: look at this as a game where they're going to
- 1:51:34Speaker 3: have corners shadow or travel with specific receivers lasting on
- 1:51:40Speaker 3: the Jaguars offense. This is a vertical based passing game.
- 1:51:45Speaker 3: This is not Doug Peterson with the Philadelphia Eagles in
- 1:51:49Speaker 3: twenty seventeen. Maybe a little bit of the Bengals, maybe
- 1:51:52Speaker 3: a little bit, but they are a bombs away offense.
- 1:51:55Speaker 3: Trevor Lawrence leads the league and deep pass attempts, deep
- 1:51:59Speaker 3: pass completions. He's fourth in the league in air yards
- 1:52:02Speaker 3: per past attempt. Like, they are bombing the ball to
- 1:52:05Speaker 3: those receivers, as they probably should with that type of group.
- 1:52:09Speaker 3: So big plays is a problem. They are explosive offense.
- 1:52:13Speaker 3: They've been wildly inconsistent. They've been shooting themselves in the
- 1:52:16Speaker 3: foot left and right, you know, but they are a
- 1:52:19Speaker 3: big play offense.
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And that's I mentioned the Bengals because again,
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: like they forced the Bengals to kind of just nicklin
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: dine their way down the field and and the Bengals
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: struggle to do it. Yeah. So I think a similar
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: philosophical approach applies in this game.
- 1:52:33Speaker 3: Do you Patriots offense against the Jaguars defense? I hate
- 1:52:37Speaker 3: to like put a ton of expectations on a rookie
- 1:52:40Speaker 3: quarterback in his second career start, but I would be
- 1:52:44Speaker 3: disappointed if that Patriots don't put up some points in
- 1:52:47Speaker 3: this game. This is a really, really really bad Jaguars defense,
- 1:52:53Speaker 3: like a historically bad Jaguars defense. They're giving up the
- 1:52:58Speaker 3: most passing yards in the league, two eighty passing yards
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: a game. They are thirty second in DVA. They're thirty
- 1:53:05Speaker 3: second in DVA against the pass, They're thirtieth in play
- 1:53:09Speaker 3: action against the pass. They're also twenty eighth in the
- 1:53:12Speaker 3: league and yards allowed on scrambles right Like, they've given
- 1:53:16Speaker 3: up a ton to mobile quarterbacks. Caleb Williams had a
- 1:53:18Speaker 3: couple big runs last week against them in London. This
- 1:53:22Speaker 3: is a really, really vulnerable Jags pass defense. And this,
- 1:53:28Speaker 3: to me, is a game if you're the Patriots and
- 1:53:31Speaker 3: Drake May who just played a really good Houston defense
- 1:53:34Speaker 3: last week in his first career start, this is one
- 1:53:36Speaker 3: where I hope he's able to build some true, real confidence,
- 1:53:39Speaker 3: Like he should go out there. He puts up two
- 1:53:41Speaker 3: hundred and forty and three touchdowns against Houston, he should
- 1:53:44Speaker 3: be able to put up three hundred yards against this
- 1:53:46Speaker 3: Jaguars defense. I don't even know if they're playing for
- 1:53:48Speaker 3: their coaches anymore. Also, like that's a piece of it too.
- 1:53:52Speaker 3: I know a lot of people are calling for Doug
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: Peterson's head in Jacksonville, like Ryan Nielsen, their defensive coordinator.
- 1:53:57Speaker 3: I also think is kind of on the hot seat.
- 1:54:00Speaker 3: If they don't fire Peterson, that might be the move, right,
- 1:54:02Speaker 3: Like somebody has to pay for this. H They are
- 1:54:05Speaker 3: thirty second in the league right now and pretty much
- 1:54:07Speaker 3: every metric on defense.
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: I think this is gonna sound a little weird. I
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: think roster wise, not schematically. Roster wise, they're similar to
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: Houston in that if you can keep them from getting
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: in the quarterback, you're going to be able to throw
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: on them. And it's you know, Will Anderson, Denil Hunter excellent,
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: like Trayvon Walker is good. They have the best Josh
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: Allen in the league.
- 1:54:31Speaker 3: Oh God, I know you're gonna say that.
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: So, like it comes down to the tackles again, and
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: like I guess I should say Josh Heines Allen chadn't
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: want to respect to change his name, but yeah, he
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: shouldn't have had to change his name. The other guy, what's
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: the quote from Office Space? Why should I change my name?
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: He's the one who sucks. Yeah, But Josh Heines, Allen,
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: Trayvon Walker, anybody on that defense stand out t Beside
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: those two guys. I remember we were bad big Chad
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: Mouma guys in the draft. Yeah, Chad moom is not
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: gonna win the Jags this game, right.
- 1:54:58Speaker 3: No, No, it's really it's really those two guys. They
- 1:55:01Speaker 3: might be getting Tyson Campbell backed or they're starting corner.
- 1:55:05Speaker 3: And we had a Jags beat writer on the playbook
- 1:55:08Speaker 3: yesterday and he mentioned that they're hoping to get him
- 1:55:11Speaker 3: back this week. He's like, there their number one corner
- 1:55:14Speaker 3: on the sun side. Yeah, but they are another one
- 1:55:18Speaker 3: of those teams two that plays like really a safety.
- 1:55:22Speaker 3: Darnell Savage, Yeah, plays the nickel for their defense, just
- 1:55:27Speaker 3: like Jalen Petree plays the nickel for Houston. And what
- 1:55:29Speaker 3: did pop Douglas due to Jalen Petrie? So again, yes,
- 1:55:33Speaker 3: for me, there's so like they're giving up the highest
- 1:55:36Speaker 3: passer rating in the league to slot receivers right now.
- 1:55:39Speaker 3: Like this matchup is so juicy, Like there's so many
- 1:55:42Speaker 3: opportunities for the Patriots offense in this game.
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: So again, like it's just a matter of keeping Alan
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: and Walker off. Yeah, don't let them Mart, that's it. Yeah,
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: because there's nobody in the secondary, there's no linebacker that's
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: gonna like, you know, make like life tough for you.
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: It's literally just those two guys.
- 1:55:57Speaker 3: Yeah. So they play a lot of cover too, Like
- 1:55:59Speaker 3: that's their bread and butter coverages, cover two zone. So
- 1:56:02Speaker 3: it's a big week forget those cover two beaters, right,
- 1:56:05Speaker 3: Like he dust those things off. They play a lot
- 1:56:07Speaker 3: of man on third down, like everybody does. They have
- 1:56:09Speaker 3: two really good edge rushers. I wouldn't say, yeah, they
- 1:56:12Speaker 3: have one really good one and Josh Heinz Allen. He's
- 1:56:15Speaker 3: a really good player. Trayvon Walker is good. I don't
- 1:56:18Speaker 3: think he's great.
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: Trayvon Walker's helped playing across from Allen, but like he's
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: a good player.
- 1:56:22Speaker 3: Yeah, he's good.
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: He's the best pass rusher on the Patriots right now.
- 1:56:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he's and he's a freak athlete. But you know,
- 1:56:29Speaker 3: I said this the other day on PU. So, first
- 1:56:31Speaker 3: of all, he has five sacks on the year. Three
- 1:56:35Speaker 3: of them came in one game against the Colts and
- 1:56:37Speaker 3: the other two came into another game. So he has
- 1:56:39Speaker 3: four games with no production basically in two games with
- 1:56:42Speaker 3: really good production. So he's capable of taking over a game,
- 1:56:45Speaker 3: but he's also capable of disappearing, right, So there's a
- 1:56:48Speaker 3: double edged sword there. With him. I said this on
- 1:56:51Speaker 3: PU and I still feel the same way. Trayvon Walker,
- 1:56:56Speaker 3: to me, is the exact example of what you don't
- 1:56:59Speaker 3: want to happen to the Patriots, which is you have
- 1:57:01Speaker 3: the number one overall pick in the draft. It's not
- 1:57:04Speaker 3: a quarterback draft, but you have a quarterback, So nobody
- 1:57:07Speaker 3: wants the number one pick, right, and they kind of
- 1:57:09Speaker 3: got Now, they probably made the wrong pick. They probably
- 1:57:12Speaker 3: should have taken Aiden Hutchinson if they were gonna go
- 1:57:14Speaker 3: pass rusher.
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: Was that two?
- 1:57:16Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, they took they so Aiden Hutchinson and Sauce
- 1:57:19Speaker 3: Gardner in that draft, and they took Trayvon Walker, if
- 1:57:23Speaker 3: I have it.
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: Right, Also Thibodeau too. Some people thought, yeah, so.
- 1:57:26Speaker 3: They they take Trayvon Walker because he was the toolsy,
- 1:57:30Speaker 3: high ceiling, freak athlete, all that kind of stuff. He's
- 1:57:34Speaker 3: been okay for them, but he hasn't in my opinion,
- 1:57:37Speaker 3: lived up to a number first No.
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: Uh and so first round pick he's been a first round.
- 1:57:42Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, Like I'm not trying to trash on like,
- 1:57:44Speaker 3: but he just hasn't been a number one overall pick.
- 1:57:47Speaker 3: And uh, you look at it and in hindsight, like
- 1:57:50Speaker 3: if that had been a quarterback draft. They already have
- 1:57:52Speaker 3: Trevor Lawrence on their roster in Jacksonville, So they're trading
- 1:57:57Speaker 3: for a haul you know they're getting. They're trading out
- 1:57:59Speaker 3: of that pick, and somebody is drafting the quarterback number
- 1:58:02Speaker 3: one overall.
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: I'm surprised nobody's dumb enough to move up for Kenny Pikett.
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: Nobody was for once they got it. For once, they
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: got it.
- 1:58:09Speaker 3: If you're a Patriots fan, like, that's the worst case
- 1:58:11Speaker 3: scenario to me is you get stuck with the number
- 1:58:14Speaker 3: one overall pick in a non quarterback year when you
- 1:58:16Speaker 3: don't need a quarterback. H So we say it all
- 1:58:19Speaker 3: the time, but Shadora Sanders Ward right in Miami, cam Ward, like,
- 1:58:24Speaker 3: we all should be fans of those j.
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: Carson back.
- 1:58:28Speaker 3: Yep, let's take these calls. Tim Is in Virginia. What's up? Tim?
- 1:58:36Speaker 8: Hey?
- 1:58:37Speaker 3: How you guys doing Hey good?
- 1:58:39Speaker 4: I love to show you guys are my favorite writers
- 1:58:41Speaker 4: as long.
- 1:58:42Speaker 3: As thank you much appreciate that.
- 1:58:45Speaker 4: I know we don't want to talk about this, but
- 1:58:47Speaker 4: there is a likelihood we may be top three pick,
- 1:58:51Speaker 4: and for starters, I would love for the offense to
- 1:58:55Speaker 4: show some sort of spark like I want to go
- 1:59:00Speaker 4: like the third overall pick, but in a way like
- 1:59:03Speaker 4: let's say our offense is like we're losing games, but
- 1:59:07Speaker 4: not like by a large margin, Like our offense is
- 1:59:10Speaker 4: going off, but the defense may be like letting us
- 1:59:13Speaker 4: down towards the end to like have wide receivers or
- 1:59:17Speaker 4: people that actually want to come to New England. But
- 1:59:20Speaker 4: here's a question. I don't want to take too much
- 1:59:22Speaker 4: of your time. If we had the number one pick,
- 1:59:25Speaker 4: who would you pick? And that's the question.
- 1:59:27Speaker 3: Thank you guys, Thanks Tim, that's a good question. I
- 1:59:30Speaker 3: feel like we're going to be answering that question a
- 1:59:33Speaker 3: lot in a couple of months. Uh, if they have
- 1:59:37Speaker 3: the number one pick, or let's just say the pick
- 1:59:39Speaker 3: of the of the of the board, like you know,
- 1:59:41Speaker 3: there's three to one, whatever.
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: They're they're they're they're they're either picking like third or
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: they're trading down to take the first non quarters.
- 1:59:49Speaker 3: Yeah. So I feel really strongly about the fact that
- 1:59:55Speaker 3: trade down is the best option in my opinion.
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: If it's at one, yeah, if they end up at
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: like four or five, you might need a stay, right.
- 2:00:01Speaker 3: If they're at one or two, yeah, I'm trading down. Yep.
- 2:00:04Speaker 3: I'm with you, and I'm hoping. I've thought about this
- 2:00:08Speaker 3: the other day. I would love it if they could
- 2:00:12Speaker 3: do a Bears trade down or a player like Dj
- 2:00:14Speaker 3: Moore is also in the package, right, so it's picks
- 2:00:17Speaker 3: and a player that had a position. Indeed, maybe it's
- 2:00:20Speaker 3: not wide receiver as much as we'd all love that.
- 2:00:23Speaker 3: Maybe it's an edge rusher. Maybe it's a tackle, like,
- 2:00:25Speaker 3: probably not a tackle, So let's.
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: Go edge rusher, edge rusher, corner.
- 2:00:28Speaker 3: Wide receiver, one of those spots. I love it. I
- 2:00:31Speaker 3: think that was so smart by the Bears to instead
- 2:00:34Speaker 3: of taking like another pick, you know, day two pick
- 2:00:37Speaker 3: or something like that, give us Dj Moore instead. Great
- 2:00:40Speaker 3: way to help your young quarterback. It didn't work with
- 2:00:42Speaker 3: Justin Fields, but it's gonna work with Kleb, you know. Like,
- 2:00:44Speaker 3: great job by them on that trade. So if their
- 2:00:46Speaker 3: patriots are one one, I'm trying to trade that pick
- 2:00:49Speaker 3: as fast as I can for a hall. Would you
- 2:00:52Speaker 3: trying to get a pick in a player first?
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: Would Would you do it if it means and we
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: both want them to take a tackle?
- 2:00:57Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: Would you do it if it means you don't get
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: your choice of the tackles uh, and maybe too soon
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: for you to answer that.
- 2:01:04Speaker 3: Yeah, like I would have to well, you know really
- 2:01:06Speaker 3: because if you're an opinion like if if right now,
- 2:01:09Speaker 3: I kind of feel and I know there's all this
- 2:01:10Speaker 3: discourse about if their tackles are guards.
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: Their tackles they're banks of tackles. Campbell what banks at tackle?
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: But let's just assume they're both tackles. I think right
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: now it's kind of like it's a it's almost like
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: a Drake Major and Daniels situation. So I'm not necessarily
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: too worried about it if you're because the reason I
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: asked this because if you're getting that player right, the
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: Bears traded down from one to nine, Yeah, one of
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: these tackles is gonna go five, So you're and maybe
- 2:01:35Speaker 1: you move back up, maybe you do what was it Miami,
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: right that traded down from three to twelve and then
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: back up to six. Yeah in the in the uh.
- 2:01:42Speaker 3: It sounds right. I think just Houston did that as well.
- 2:01:45Speaker 3: Houston all right, but like Arizon, it was Arizona that
- 2:01:48Speaker 3: did it. Sorry, I didn't know.
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: I'm thinking of the the.
- 2:01:51Speaker 3: Arizona did it with Paris Johnson.
- 2:01:53Speaker 1: The Trey Lancier. The Niners moved up to three with
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: was he the Eagles or the Dolphins? And then those
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: Doves made it another Yeah, so they went from three
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: to twelve and then from twelve to six. But the
- 2:02:04Speaker 1: point being, like for me, I think it has to
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: be a tackle. I'm actually leaning more Calvin Banks now
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: and it's not even because of the arm lank thing.
- 2:02:11Speaker 1: Will Campbell has a little bit of a penalty problem
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: right now for this team. It wears me a little
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: bit the way they've been committing penalties. A lot of
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: ball have to be played. I still reserve the chance
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: to change my mind, but I do want at some
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: point you got to watch ursery and because maybe that
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: puts Tech McMillan and play for you. But Calvin Banks,
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: I'll take Will Campbell. I wouldn't be mad. I think
- 2:02:35Speaker 1: they're both tackles too. I know it's coming from Brugler
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: who said that they're both guards. Like I don't want
- 2:02:41Speaker 1: to say the draft guys, because we're the draft guys.
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: Like everybody said, there's a certain point where every tackle
- 2:02:48Speaker 1: is a guard. And then I've got to go back.
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: This is like a homework assignment for me for the
- 2:02:53Speaker 1: bye week. Who are the other tackles that were called
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: guards initially? Because there's some really good I don't remember
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: the names off the top of my head, but I
- 2:02:59Speaker 1: know there's some really good tackles on that list.
- 2:03:01Speaker 3: It's one of my biggest pet peeves of draft season. Yeah,
- 2:03:05Speaker 3: is hearing the discourse of he's a guard, he's a guard,
- 2:03:08Speaker 3: he's a guard, he's guard, he's guard. Like in certain instances,
- 2:03:13Speaker 3: I can hear what you're saying, Skaransky, I think that
- 2:03:17Speaker 3: was fair because his arms are I think are below
- 2:03:20Speaker 3: thirty two and a half. They're like close to thirty two.
- 2:03:23Speaker 1: I want people last year saying Ah was a guard, Yeah,
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: because he wasn't experienced enough. There were people saying Alt
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: was a guard because he wasn't physical enough.
- 2:03:34Speaker 3: Yeah. No, it's just every single time that there's a
- 2:03:36Speaker 3: prospect unless he is literally Joe Thomas reincarnated, we start talking.
- 2:03:42Speaker 3: We started talking last year and we started talking about that,
- 2:03:46Speaker 3: that he's a guard. Yeah, it drives me up a wall. Uh,
- 2:03:50Speaker 3: the offensive line people you talked to, not not the
- 2:03:54Speaker 3: draft people. I'm not picking on the draft people, by
- 2:03:56Speaker 3: the way, but not like the draft analysts, but like
- 2:03:59Speaker 3: you know, the people actually study the film of the
- 2:04:01Speaker 3: offensive line think that it's absolutely nuts that we're talking
- 2:04:05Speaker 3: about these two guys, especially Calvin Banks, because he checks
- 2:04:08Speaker 3: all the measurables as potentially moving inside. Look, it's the
- 2:04:11Speaker 3: easiest cop out, like, oh yeah, like he's not gonna
- 2:04:14Speaker 3: make it a tackle, so we'll make him a guard. Like,
- 2:04:16Speaker 3: it's such an easy cop out.
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: And for the people, well, and also like for the
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: people who want the Patriots to draft a wide receiver,
- 2:04:21Speaker 1: it's the way to justify it. Yeah, you might just
- 2:04:24Speaker 1: have to eat your vegetables. By the way, for Banks,
- 2:04:27Speaker 1: you talk about the film people, the college football film people,
- 2:04:31Speaker 1: so they have no stake in what position Calvin Banks
- 2:04:36Speaker 1: is going to end up playing. They watch film of
- 2:04:38Speaker 1: the college teams. They go off of that. A lot
- 2:04:40Speaker 1: of them have said these two tackles because Texas right
- 2:04:45Speaker 1: tackles also top fifty pick Cameron Williams. They said this
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: might be the greatest offensive line, greatest tackle combination of
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: Texas history, which is saying something, Yeah, you're not gonna
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: say that about a guy who's playing guard. I know
- 2:04:56Speaker 1: we got one call off.
- 2:04:56Speaker 3: Yeah, because that I got it on the busy, all right,
- 2:05:00Speaker 3: you're wrapping it up for us.
- 2:05:01Speaker 8: What's up, Jose Hi, I have a question of the
- 2:05:05Speaker 8: current roster, if and when Cole Strange and Kittie Wallace
- 2:05:10Speaker 8: come back, and I'm throwing in Leyden robertson what does
- 2:05:14Speaker 8: the what would be your best offensive line if you
- 2:05:18Speaker 8: had all those guys available? And one more thing, this
- 2:05:22Speaker 8: is this is talking about what you were talking about
- 2:05:24Speaker 8: in the draft. If the Patriots don't trade down and
- 2:05:28Speaker 8: then trade back up into the first round to get
- 2:05:30Speaker 8: a combination of either two tackles or a tackle and
- 2:05:35Speaker 8: a wide receiver, I will lose my mind. That's it.
- 2:05:38Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 2:05:38Speaker 3: Thanks for the call, Jose to the first one on
- 2:05:41Speaker 3: Cole Strange. I think there's a real chance at center. Yeah,
- 2:05:44Speaker 3: I think there's a really really good chance at center.
- 2:05:46Speaker 1: We'll see what Ben Brown does here the next few weeks.
- 2:05:48Speaker 3: Yeah. They I hate to say that they have a
- 2:05:52Speaker 3: logjam at guard because the offensive line just hasn't been
- 2:05:55Speaker 3: good enough like that. They kind of do that if
- 2:05:57Speaker 3: that feels like a compliment, you know, they kind of
- 2:06:00Speaker 3: have a log jam at guard. I mean like guys
- 2:06:02Speaker 3: like Citysow and Leidon Robinson haven't been playing, and those
- 2:06:04Speaker 3: two guys I think have NFL futures as starters in
- 2:06:07Speaker 3: the league on the interior. So that's tough for Cole Strange.
- 2:06:12Speaker 3: They really, this coaching staff really really likes Michael Jordan
- 2:06:15Speaker 3: because he's really consistent. He's not a game changing guard
- 2:06:18Speaker 3: by any stretch of the imagination, but he doesn't have
- 2:06:20Speaker 3: any glaring errors to his game either, and he's just
- 2:06:23Speaker 3: really steady, and that's something that they need right now.
- 2:06:25Speaker 3: So it's hard, like, it's hard to find a path
- 2:06:28Speaker 3: especially if on when he is really trying to play inside,
- 2:06:32Speaker 3: it's hard to find a path for Cole Strange. Isn't center,
- 2:06:35Speaker 3: Like they're they're probably not gonna take Michael Jordan off
- 2:06:38Speaker 3: the field right now unless he gets hurt. Right guard.
- 2:06:42Speaker 3: Cole Strange has never really played right guard. It's not
- 2:06:45Speaker 3: like he's probably played more center frankly than he's played
- 2:06:47Speaker 3: right guard. So I look at Cole Strange as the center.
- 2:06:52Speaker 3: I think we feel the same way on that one.
- 2:06:54Speaker 3: And then the second question about the draft, I hear
- 2:06:58Speaker 3: everybody I would say that free agency and not let's
- 2:07:02Speaker 3: get through March. Yeah, and see, like if they signed
- 2:07:04Speaker 3: T Higgins or they trade for your boy DK met.
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: They should trade that second pick. But like, if you
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: trade the second round pick for DK Metcalf, you're probably
- 2:07:14Speaker 1: not gonna be able to trade back up in the
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: first round. But I'm kind of okay with that.
- 2:07:17Speaker 3: Yeah, and this is a bigger take and we don't
- 2:07:19Speaker 3: have time for it, but just really quickly, like, don't
- 2:07:21Speaker 3: totally sleep on the defensive side of the ball. I
- 2:07:24Speaker 3: know it's not sexy, I know it's not shiny. I
- 2:07:26Speaker 3: know it's not what we all want. But they're twenty
- 2:07:29Speaker 3: ninth in the league in DVOA on defense right now,
- 2:07:31Speaker 3: and they'll get bar More and Bentley back and that
- 2:07:33Speaker 3: will help, but like, they are not a good defense,
- 2:07:35Speaker 3: So don't sleep on that.
- 2:07:36Speaker 1: We do this every year, we do a big three needs,
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: right like, and it's just worked out that there's kind
- 2:07:41Speaker 1: of been three needs that are clearly a tier above
- 2:07:43Speaker 1: all else.
- 2:07:44Speaker 3: Yep.
- 2:07:44Speaker 1: Last year quarterback, receiver, tackle, this year tackle receiver. I
- 2:07:48Speaker 1: would say edge. I would say edge is a bigger
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: need than anything on offense outside of tackle or receiver.
- 2:07:54Speaker 3: Yeah. I don't necessarily disagree with that at all. And look,
- 2:07:57Speaker 3: if you want to build it from the back end
- 2:07:58Speaker 3: and you draft corner, the opposite againzales and that you're
- 2:08:02Speaker 3: gonna build a no fly zone instead, Like you can
- 2:08:04Speaker 3: go that way.
- 2:08:04Speaker 1: We're good at developing corners though, Like that's again. We'll
- 2:08:07Speaker 1: get in there in the spring.
- 2:08:08Speaker 3: Okay, we've gotta wrap it up here. But before we do,
