- 0:12and
- 0:13happy napod promo 2025
- 0:15if I haven't said that already. This is our fourteenth episode for November 14 of National
- 0:22Podcast
- 0:23Post Month. Remember, that's 30 episodes in thirty days. That means tomorrow's episode, and we're halfway there.
- 0:32Today here on the show, I wanna be
- 0:35I wanna share with you some takeaways from pod indie twenty twenty five. It's an event I attended this past weekend,
- 0:42and I've got some clips I pulled from doctor Craig Van Slyke.
- 0:47And Craig is a professor at Louisiana Tech University.
- 0:50He's an expert in AI, especially in higher education.
- 0:54And what he talked about was some of the practical uses
- 0:56of AI for creators today.
- 1:00So Craig opened up talking at PodIndy
- 1:03with this line here.
- 1:06Craig Van Slyke: AI is not hard.
- 1:08There are all kinds of people out there telling you this is hard, and there are scary terms, and that the technology is just
- 1:15this shy of magic,
- 1:17but using it is not a difficult thing. How many of you can text?
- 1:22How many of you can text without using voice to text?
- 1:26Not me. If you can text, you can use AI.
- 1:30Randy Black: Wow.
- 1:31That line.
- 1:33If you can text, you can use AI. That reframed
- 1:36the entire day for me.
- 1:39I mean, I've used AI tools before,
- 1:41but suddenly
- 1:43AI and advanced features that Craig Lager talked about felt really approachable.
- 1:48They came across as being really practical,
- 1:51and it was something that I could play with
- 1:54rather than holding on to some fear about it.
- 1:59Craig immediately pivoted, though, to a a core mindset that he kept re he kept returning to throughout the day. And here is an excerpt excerpt from from the talk where
- 2:10he explains what he wants prompting
- 2:12to do
- 2:14for himself and for you.
- 2:15Craig Van Slyke: I'm gonna show you how you can use prompts
- 2:19not to get AI just to do stuff for you,
- 2:22but to unleash and enhance your own creativity.
- 2:25Right? That's the other mindset. How do I get AI to help me be more me,
- 2:30not to replace you? Wow.
- 2:33Randy Black: It's exactly what he said there. How do I get AI to help me be more me, not to replace me, and not to replace you?
- 2:40Phew.
- 2:41The focus is on enhancing
- 2:43the creativity,
- 2:45not outsourcing it, not using AI to generate the content,
- 2:49but to take the content, to take the creative things you've made and then use them to enhance them, to bring them together, to bring them out, to find other ideas.
- 3:01Craig pushed back, though, on the whole idea of,
- 3:04quote, unquote, prompt engineering
- 3:07on that whole phrase. Here's what he had to say about it.
- 3:10Craig Van Slyke: Have you heard of prompt engineering?
- 3:12Forget about it.
- 3:14I mean, it's a ridiculous term for the way 90% of us are going to use AI.
- 3:19Engineering
- 3:20is precise. It's repeatable.
- 3:23You can tell what it's going to do. It's predictable.
- 3:27AI is none of that. The generative AI systems I'm just going to say AI, but technically it's large language models and generative AI.
- 3:34It's just none of that.
- 3:35I want you to think about prompting as design,
- 3:38something that's iterative, messy, where you go down paths that may not go anywhere immediately, but they get you somewhere you wanna be.
- 3:46Randy Black: He reframed
- 3:48prompting
- 3:49as design,
- 3:50making it iterative,
- 3:52making it exploratory.
- 3:54I found that both freeing and practical at the same time,
- 3:57and it's amazing.
- 4:00Craig then introduced
- 4:01a framework
- 4:03for using AI, a framework for prompting AI,
- 4:07and it's very simple
- 4:09and really easy to understand. And here's what he had to say. So I'm gonna create yet another one called roll, goal, input, output.
- 4:16Craig Van Slyke: I liked it because it's got a little rhythm to it. Roll, goal, input, output.
- 4:20All the framework does
- 4:23is gives you some tips about what you might,
- 4:26notice the word might, want to include in your prompts.
- 4:30Right? It's a set of guidelines. It's not a set of laws.
- 4:34Randy Black: That is a extremely concise
- 4:36and usable template.
- 4:38It's extremely clear,
- 4:40and we can apply it immediately in what we do. So if we prompt
- 4:44AI,
- 4:45we can use that very simple model, that framework.
- 4:49What's the role? What's the goal? What's our input? And what should our output be? That's awesome.
- 4:56And Craig also
- 4:58used a little bit of humor
- 4:59to give permission out there for everybody to be able to experiment with AI. And here's here's exactly what he said.
- 5:07Craig Van Slyke: Here's the great thing about AI.
- 5:10I don't know. Let's try it.
- 5:13Right?
- 5:14Say it with me now. If I get it wrong, nobody's gonna punch me in the nose. This is our we have our theme for the day, by the way.
- 5:22Randy Black: That was hilarious. And that's kind of a takeoff of Dave Jackson of the school positing. And Dave was there. Dave has a clip he plays where it says nobody's gonna punch you in the face. You know? And that line, he pulled it out there. That line kinda loosened the room up. It it it made the whole approach to what we were doing feel a little bit less risky because it took the weight off of us that we don't know what it's really gonna do, but we're gonna try it, and we're gonna see. We're gonna we're gonna stick our neck out there and and see what this, this LLM, this AI can produce for us.
- 5:54Then Craig took some time and explained the difference
- 5:58and the creative value of what he calls
- 6:00open prompting
- 6:02versus a a a structured prompting.
- 6:05So here's what he had to say about that.
- 6:07Craig Van Slyke: If you constrain it,
- 6:10it's gonna give you a narrow set of things. If you let it go, it might go down a path
- 6:16that's pretty interesting that you hadn't thought about before.
- 6:20A lot of it may be stuff that's not of any use to you, then you refine it and you go back and forth and you try to narrow it down.
- 6:28But every once in a while,
- 6:31it just gets your creative juices going in a way that you would not have done on your own. That's a huge benefit of these tools.
- 6:40Randy Black: That's the reasoning out there behind letting the system wander sometimes.
- 6:46Let it
- 6:47surface ideas that you might not have otherwise considered.
- 6:50New approaches, new perspectives.
- 6:52You could even in the prompt tell it, give me a new approach to this that may not have been seen before. Offer up suggestions for a new idea based on this content.
- 7:02It's
- 7:03pretty powerful.
- 7:04Open prompting versus structured prompting. Leave it open, and sometimes it can lead you down a path that can lead to something very, very creative.
- 7:15Craig finished this portion of the day by flagging the next level techniques that he calls
- 7:21meta prompting, And here's what he had to share.
- 7:24Craig Van Slyke: How do you get from this open iterative thing to the template?
- 7:28You use something called
- 7:30meta prompting.
- 7:32Meta prompting.
- 7:33This this is gold.
- 7:36This is really, really gold.
- 7:39You ask AI
- 7:41to write the prompt for you.
- 7:46Randy Black: Mind
- 7:47blown.
- 7:48You ask AI
- 7:50to write the prompt for you?
- 7:53And
- 7:54we're gonna dig into that on tomorrow's episode of Randy Unscripted.
- 7:58We're gonna look at how Craig uses meta prompting and deep research to build useful templates and really large reports quickly,
- 8:06and it's gonna blow you away.
- 8:09This has been episode 14 of my napod promo
