- 0:00Chapter 29 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 0:03And again, we are reading this because all scripture is God
- 0:07breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting
- 0:10and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be
- 0:15thoroughly equipped for every good work.
- 0:17That's from Second Timothy chapter 3, verse 16.
- 0:21And the other reason we read is consequently faith comes from
- 0:26hearing the message, and the message is heard through the
- 0:29word about Christ. And that's from Romans chapter
- 0:3310, verse 17. And I'm not sure if in this
- 0:38chapter if we're actually going to have a discussion about
- 0:43Jesus, but in chapters 31 and 32 we definitely will.
- 0:52So it's getting close. Again, there's Jesus throughout
- 0:55the Old Testament and when you, when we realize it, it's really
- 1:00neat to find these things where it talks about it.
- 1:03So we'll read about the letter to the Exiles in Jeremiah
- 1:07chapter 29. This is the text of the letter
- 1:11that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the surviving
- 1:16elders among the Exiles, and to the priest, the prophets and all
- 1:22the other people. So this is going to the
- 1:26survivors that are in Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar had carried into
- 1:31exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. This was after King Jehovah Chin
- 1:37and the Queen Mother, the court officials and the leaders of
- 1:40Judah and Jerusalem, the skilled workers and the artisans, had
- 1:43gone into exile from Jerusalem. He entrusted the letter to Elasa
- 1:50son of Chapan or Shafan, and to Gemariah son of Hilakiya or
- 2:01Hilakiya, whom Zedekiah, king of Judah, sent to Nebuchadnezzar in
- 2:07Babylon. So he sent this letter through
- 2:11people to the people who were in exile.
- 2:16This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel says to all
- 2:20those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.
- 2:25So he's, this is like reaffirmation of what Jeremiah
- 2:28said, because originally when Jeremiah warned them, he said to
- 2:34surrender to Nebuchadnezzar. And this was part of God's
- 2:38judgement on the people because of their sin.
- 2:41He allowed an enemy to have control over them.
- 2:46Like God will do that at some point.
- 2:47And that's that's a little bit of where the fear of God comes
- 2:50into play for our lives. Because if we're in rebellion to
- 2:54God, there's a certain point where we've seen historically
- 2:59through the Bible that God will sometimes turn somebody over to
- 3:04their sin. So how many times does God let
- 3:07us keep rebelling before he says, OK, fine, that's what you
- 3:12want. I mean, God is the only one who
- 3:14knows our true heart and our true motivation.
- 3:18So and God is just. So I believe whatever he does is
- 3:22just. But I remember when I was
- 3:25reading these things, I kind of had the fear of God where OK, I
- 3:30realized that I was in rebellion and I was like, I don't want to
- 3:34put God to the test and all of a sudden have God reject me and
- 3:39turn me over to the enemy permanently.
- 3:42You know, without repentance, he couldn't turn back.
- 3:45So when I say permanently, God does allow us to turn back to
- 3:49him. There's only one sin that's in
- 3:54that's not able to be forgiven and that's blasphemy of the Holy
- 3:59Spirit and also receiving the mark of the beast, which may be
- 4:05that in itself is actually blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.
- 4:09That's a complete rejection of God and that's maybe why that's
- 4:12an unforgivable sin. So other than that, anything
- 4:16else God can forgive. And if we are sincere about
- 4:21asking for forgiveness. So anyway, let's go back to what
- 4:25the Scripture's talking about. And he, he writes this letter to
- 4:29the Exiles and he tells them, build houses and settle down,
- 4:32plant gardens and eat what they produce, what they produce.
- 4:36Marry and have sons and daughters.
- 4:39Find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage
- 4:43so that they too may have sons and daughters.
- 4:47Increase a number, do not decrease.
- 4:51This is interesting because God tells them basically go on with
- 4:55your life. Do all the normal things that
- 4:57you would do in this foreign land says also seek the peace
- 5:04and prosperity of the city to which I carry you into exile.
- 5:10So he's like, don't fight against them.
- 5:14Bring peace and prosperity to where I'm sending you pray to
- 5:20the Lord for it. So again, he wants that
- 5:24connection even though they're going to be in enemy territory
- 5:28who serve an enemy who serves other gods.
- 5:32He's saying, you know, pray to the Lord for it.
- 5:35And it says he gives a reason why, because if it prospers the
- 5:40city, you too will prosper, so he can bring good out of it.
- 5:46Yes, this is what the Lord God, the what the Lord Almighty, the
- 5:50God of Israel says to not let the prophets and divinners are,
- 5:56yeah, among you deceive you. So again, here's where that
- 6:00discernment comes in, back for in that time and today where we
- 6:05need to have discernment about people who say they hear from
- 6:10the Lord. Do not listen to the dreams you
- 6:14encourage them to have. They are prophesying lies to you
- 6:20in my name. I have not sent them, declares
- 6:23the Lord. So we have people like that
- 6:25today too. This is what the Lord says.
- 6:29When 70 years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and
- 6:36fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place.
- 6:41For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to
- 6:46prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a
- 6:51future. Now I want to pause about this
- 6:54because I think there might be more to this than I don't know
- 7:01there could be. This is just interesting to
- 7:04think about, to wander on, and I don't have the answer.
- 7:07It's just something that came to mind as I was reading this.
- 7:10So there's 70 years are completed when the 70 years are
- 7:17completed for. But I will come to you.
- 7:20That's kind of interesting that he says.
- 7:22I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you
- 7:28back to this place. So I don't know.
- 7:33I'm going to read what the study Bible says.
- 7:35Why 70 years? Some suggest that God chose 70
- 7:38years of captivity because that was a person's normal lifespan.
- 7:43A generation of Jews spent a lifetime in exile as punishment
- 7:47for the sins of their fathers. Others say the time represented
- 7:51is the number of Sabbath years during which Israelites had not
- 7:56permitted the land to rest. The first captives were taken
- 8:00were taken from Jerusalem in six O 5 BC, and the first Jews
- 8:05returned from Babylon in 638. So when doing that calculation,
- 8:11you're we're off by three years. It doesn't.
- 8:15It doesn't match up, but it says others count the time from 586
- 8:20BC when the temple was destroyed to 516 BC when Zerubbabel's
- 8:28temple was finished. Now that's exactly 70 years, so
- 8:33that seems more likely. And again, the Bible is so
- 8:38complicated. It has a a simple message
- 8:42throughout, the most important message of salvation.
- 8:46That's very simple throughout the Bible.
- 8:48But the other details of some of these things, especially
- 8:52prophecy, is very complicated. And I don't know that we always
- 8:57get it right. There's a lot of theories about
- 8:59different things. So it's always interesting and
- 9:03sometimes helpful to hear different theories and to double
- 9:09check it against what the Bible says.
- 9:12So does this also refer to and again, translation?
- 9:17So I did not look up like in blue letter Bible.
- 9:20I love going to that resource. But when it says when 70 years
- 9:24are completed by Babylon, I wonder, I'm going to try and get
- 9:27to that, to that place because I, I'm very curious right now
- 9:32about it doesn't actually say years or is this a translation
- 9:36thing? So it's in Jeremiah chapter 29
- 9:42and verse 10. So as soon as I get there, I
- 9:45will let you know. OK, So if we go to the tools bar
- 9:50bar and say when the 70 year, it says years, it's a year division
- 9:58of time, a measure of time, an indication of age, a lifetime of
- 10:02years. So yeah, it kind of does seem
- 10:07like it says it means literally years.
- 10:11So when 70 years are completed for Babylon.
- 10:16So that seems like that was exactly the 70 years.
- 10:20So I mean, from the information given to us in the study Bible,
- 10:24it seems like it's more likely that it's when the temple was
- 10:27destroyed and then it was rebuilt.
- 10:30And I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring
- 10:34you back to this place for I know the plans I have for you,
- 10:38declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
- 10:42plans to give you hope in a future.
- 10:45You know, despite all these bad things that are happening,
- 10:48they're going into the hands of the enemy and they're living in
- 10:51a foreign country. And there's a lot of idolatry
- 10:54with the leadership in that foreign country Despite that.
- 10:57I mean, those are those were punishment or that was
- 11:01punishment because of their sin, but that's not what God's plan
- 11:06was. God is righteous, He brings
- 11:10about justice and he has to punish sin.
- 11:15If he didn't punish sin, he wouldn't be just.
- 11:19But he's saying these are not, this is not what I wanted to do
- 11:23with you, but because of what you did and you don't repent,
- 11:27then you bring on this yourself. You know, it has to be dealt
- 11:31with, but he's, he's like, I'm, I have plans.
- 11:35And it's not to harm you, but to give you hope in a future.
- 11:38And this is something that I think is applicable to all of us
- 11:44that if we are repentant towards him, he does have good plans for
- 11:49us and hope in a future. And so he in Scripture, it says
- 11:55verse 12, then you will call on me and come and pray to me and I
- 12:01will listen to you. You will seek me and find me
- 12:05when you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you
- 12:09declares the Lord. And I think this verse also
- 12:13applies to us too, because God calls people and it's it's
- 12:20interesting. I was looking at that like I was
- 12:23found by those I did. Let's see how did I wanted to
- 12:27find that. Now I'm messing up what I what
- 12:30it called I was Oh gosh, I wish I I had that pulled up earlier
- 12:45found by those. Let's see if I can if that makes
- 12:50sense. Hopefully it can find it.
- 12:52I OK in Isaiah 65 verse 1, he this is God saying I revealed
- 12:58myself to those who did not ask for me.
- 13:02I was found by those who did not seek me to a nation that did not
- 13:09call on my name. I said here am I here am I.
- 13:16So this is just showing God's love and his mercy, like some
- 13:21people who aren't even seeking God, which may be all of us,
- 13:26because it does seem like God calls us first or God loves us
- 13:31first and then we need to respond back to God.
- 13:37And, and it says like I revealed myself to those who didn't, who
- 13:42did not ask for me. So some people, this is the way
- 13:47God will work in a person's life.
- 13:49He, they couldn't even, maybe they're not even seeking him.
- 13:52And all of a sudden he reveals something to them and he was
- 13:57found by those who did not seek him.
- 14:00And that's sometimes we are hearing that today where there
- 14:06are some Muslim people who are having dreams about Jesus.
- 14:12Do you think they decided to do that?
- 14:14And then they're also coming to faith and belief in him and
- 14:19turning to him. So this is something that they
- 14:23certainly wouldn't be seeking on their own, but this is God's
- 14:28mercy and his love to them and sharing God's Kingdom with them.
- 14:34So if they respond positively to him and accept him, then they
- 14:39will be in the Kingdom of God, which is so beautiful of what
- 14:43God does. And anyway, but he's saying, you
- 14:48know, in Jeremiah, God is saying this to the people in exile.
- 14:54You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your
- 14:57heart. So God's always after our heart,
- 15:01our deepest desires to like, do we really want to know him?
- 15:07He is after that and he says I will be found by you.
- 15:11Like this is a promise. So can you think about this when
- 15:14if you were in exile in Babylon and you get this letter from
- 15:18Jeremiah, the prophet who says all this to you, like you, you
- 15:24will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
- 15:27Do you think maybe the people who were in exile started
- 15:31seeking God at that point? Do you think they were like, OK,
- 15:34we need God right now because we're away from our homeland.
- 15:39We are, you know, I guess in some sort of slavery situation.
- 15:45I mean, they don't, they don't have the freedom and they're in
- 15:49captivity. So this would be a time God
- 15:53often will use times where we are at our low point where he
- 16:00will bring us back to him. And that's probably what
- 16:03happened to many of the people who were in captivity.
- 16:06So he says, I will be found, looked by you, declares the
- 16:09Lord, and will bring you back from captivity.
- 16:13I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have
- 16:17banished you, declares the Lord, and will bring you back to the
- 16:21place from which I carried you into exile.
- 16:25It almost seems to me like this is a much broader meaning where
- 16:32he says I will gather you from all the nations.
- 16:36But here we were talking about this letter is going to the
- 16:41people of Judah who were in exile in Babylon, but he's
- 16:46saying to all the nations. So that is kind of confusing to
- 16:51me that it wouldn't it be just like I will gather you from
- 16:56Babylon, But no, he says all the nations.
- 16:59So I think this is like a future promise to them as well.
- 17:04And it's interesting that I think, Oh no, it's the next
- 17:08chapter where God tells them to write it down where it will, you
- 17:12know, where people will read this in the future.
- 17:15And I think these, even though this was written to the people
- 17:20at that time, it also applies to people today.
- 17:24Like we can find information, we can find messages from God
- 17:29within Scripture today, even though this was written in the
- 17:31BC time frame. So you may say the Lord has
- 17:36raised up prophets for us in Babylon, but this is what the
- 17:41Lord says about the king who sits on David's throne and all
- 17:46the people who remain in this city, your fellow citizens who
- 17:51did not go with you into exile. Yes, this is what the Lord
- 17:55Almighty says. I will send the sword famine and
- 18:00plague against them. So remember that that was the
- 18:03warning because there were some prophets that were saying like,
- 18:06it's going to be peaceful and that God was going to protect
- 18:09them and deliver them from the king of Babylon.
- 18:12And and I guess was Hananiah that we just read about that
- 18:16said he was going to break the yoke off the Nebuchadnezzar and
- 18:22they would be freed. And Jeremiah saying, you know, I
- 18:25hope that happens, but that's not what God told me.
- 18:28And so God also said, which would is kind of the opposite of
- 18:32what God normally did. God normally delivered them from
- 18:36their enemies, but because this was punishment for their
- 18:40disobedience and rebellion against God, he delivered them
- 18:44into the hands of their enemies. And he's the one who can appoint
- 18:49kings and rulers over people. And, and so, and but he says,
- 18:56you know, go with them like, and it'll be fine.
- 18:59You like, you'll continue to live, you'll get life if you go
- 19:02with him, which is something that was probably not expected
- 19:06by them. But he said everybody who stayed
- 19:09in the city was going to have sword famine and plague against
- 19:14them. So they God wanted them to leave
- 19:17from there. And he said, and I will make
- 19:20them like figs that are so bad they cannot be eaten.
- 19:24I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and
- 19:27will make them abhorrent to all kingdoms of the earth, a curse
- 19:32and an object of horror of scorn, reproach among all the
- 19:37nations where I drive them. And he gives the reason why God
- 19:42always gives the reason why he does this because we can say,
- 19:45gosh, that's that's mean. Like why would God do that?
- 19:48He says because, well, for they have not listened to my words
- 19:54disobedience. He was talking through Jeremiah.
- 19:57Jeremiah was warning them. They weren't listening to
- 20:01Jeremiah. They wanted to have the good
- 20:03things that they were hearing from false prophets that were
- 20:06saying you're going to have peace, God's going to deliver
- 20:08you just like in times of past. Well, they had history to fall
- 20:12back on and look at that. But it's here's that part about
- 20:17having discernment on who is telling you something, who is
- 20:21giving advice? Is it from someone who has the
- 20:25Holy Spirit or is it from someone who is worldly or is
- 20:31getting it from something evil? He says for this is God saying,
- 20:36for they have not listened to my word, declares the Lord.
- 20:38Words that I sent to them again and again by my servants, the
- 20:44prophets. And you exiles have not listened
- 20:48either, declares the Lord. Therefore hear the word of the
- 20:52Lord, all you exiles, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to
- 20:57Babylon. This is what the Lord Almighty,
- 20:59the God of Israel says about Ahab son of Koloa and Zedekiah
- 21:07son of Messiah, who are prophesying.
- 21:11These people have their names called out who are prophesying
- 21:15lies to you in my name. So God is literally calling out
- 21:18the people who are the false prophets.
- 21:21I will deliver them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of
- 21:25Babylon, and He will put them to death before your very eyes.
- 21:31Wow. So they get, you know, God seems
- 21:35like He puts to death just like that Hananiah who was saying
- 21:40you're going to be free in two years, then God put him.
- 21:44I mean, God, you know, like if if somebody's speaking, that's
- 21:47the scary part about it. You don't want to say you're a
- 21:50prophet and not truly be hearing from the word of God, be
- 21:55hearing, be hearing directly from God.
- 21:58Because if you do, that could mean your life is taken from
- 22:01you, because God is not going to have a part of that because of
- 22:06them. All the Exiles from Judah who
- 22:08are in Babylon will use this curse.
- 22:11May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab whom the king
- 22:16of Babylon burned in the fire. So they had a pretty rough
- 22:20death. It says burned in the fire.
- 22:23For they have done outrageous things in Israel.
- 22:26They have committed adultery with their neighbors wives and
- 22:31in my name they have uttered lies which I did not authorize.
- 22:36So again we can see they are not living by the fruit of the
- 22:39Spirit. They are breaking God's
- 22:42commandments and also speaking lies.
- 22:46A couple of the commandments there.
- 22:48I know it and I am a witness to it, declares the Lord.
- 22:52God knows everything that happens.
- 22:54Even when we think it's hidden, it's not hidden from God.
- 22:58Tell Shamaya the Nehalemite This is what the Lord Almighty, the
- 23:03God of Israel says. You sent letters in your own
- 23:06name to all the people in Jerusalem, to the priest
- 23:10Zephaniah son of Messiah, and to all the other priests.
- 23:16You said to Zephaniah, The Lord has appointed you priest in the
- 23:21place of Jehoiadiah to be in charge of the House of the Lord.
- 23:26You should put you should put any maniac who acts like a
- 23:32prophet into stocks and neck irons.
- 23:36So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth who poses
- 23:41as a prophet among you? He has sent this message to us
- 23:46in Babylon. It will be a it will be a long
- 23:50time. Therefore, build houses and
- 23:53settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they
- 23:56produce. Zephaniah the priest, however,
- 24:00read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet.
- 24:04Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.
- 24:07Send this message to all the Exiles.
- 24:10This is what the Lord says about Shemaiah the Nehilimite, because
- 24:16Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I did not send him,
- 24:22and has persuaded you to trust in lies.
- 24:26This is what the Lord says. I will surely punish Shamaya,
- 24:32that Nehilimite and his descendants.
- 24:35He will have no one left among his people, nor will he see the
- 24:40good things I will do for my people, declares the Lord,
- 24:44because he has preached rebellion against me.
- 24:49And that's how chapter 29 ends. So I will read the questions and
- 24:54answers for this chapter and that's and then we'll wrap it
- 24:57up. So why didn't Jeremiah go into
- 25:02captivity with his people? Nebu Zuradan, the commander of
- 25:09the Imperial Guard, gave Jeremiah Jeremiah the choice of
- 25:13going to Babylon or remaining in Judah.
- 25:17The Lord's hand of protection gave Jeremiah favor with the
- 25:23Babylonians. Look at how God can work that in
- 25:27making His decision to remain in the land.
- 25:30Jeremiah certainly was aware of his own prophetic words
- 25:34concerning those who remained in Judah.
- 25:37With those words in mind, Jeremiah have thought, may have
- 25:42thought, that those who remained in the land would be in need of
- 25:46clear guidance from the Lord. In any case, he definitely opted
- 25:52for the more difficult path. That's interesting that he chose
- 25:57because that would be, you know, he would, it would be sword,
- 26:00famine or plague that would actually get him by choosing
- 26:05that. Why should the Jews pray for
- 26:10Babylon? We must remember that God sent
- 26:12Judah into exile. His will was that Babylon defeat
- 26:16the people of Judah not just to punish them, but also teach them
- 26:20to submit to his will, meaning God's will.
- 26:23Learning to pray for the peace and prosperity of their
- 26:26conquerors was one of their first lessons in submission
- 26:31there. Furthermore, the Jews were
- 26:33bringing their faith in God to this strange nation.
- 26:37Perhaps they could influence their captors to also serve the
- 26:42Lord since this since they would be captives for 70 years, it
- 26:48would also be wise to pray for peace so they might enjoy their
- 26:53lives. Why?
- 26:55And we read about the why 70 years.
- 26:57So must people seek God before he seeks them?
- 27:01This has long been debated. One can emphasize either God's
- 27:06sovereign activity in bringing sinners to himself or the
- 27:10response of the human will to God's grace.
- 27:14Scripture offers both both perspective in what is called
- 27:19antinomy, two truths, both with scriptural support, that are
- 27:26irreconcilable from a human standpoint yet completely
- 27:30reconcilable from God's viewpoint.
- 27:33Does God seek the lost or do the lost seek God?
- 27:38The answer is yes to both questions.
- 27:43I I don't know my opinion on this.
- 27:47I think God seeks us first and then we respond to him.
- 27:52So just like Jesus came to earth for the sinners to bring them to
- 27:59repentance, so then it is up to sinners, all of us to repent, to
- 28:04turn to God, to seek God. So God does pursue us.
- 28:10And, and I, I just do think that God pursues us because even in
- 28:14the very end, where in the very, very, very end, when judgement
- 28:19is coming about the Angel, it says the Angel, whether it's a
- 28:23messenger or a literal Angel, I don't know, because there's a
- 28:27lot of symbolism in the Book of Revelation, but it says like
- 28:30before, actually before the mark of the beast, the Angel goes out
- 28:35and tells everyone, do not take the mark of the beast.
- 28:39And the gospel was is proclaimed to all the nations, It says by
- 28:44an Angel and an Angel like again, is a messenger.
- 28:48So whether it's a literal Angel or some other way, but either
- 28:53way, God sends the gospel out the truth.
- 29:00And so everybody has the opportunity.
- 29:03But the scary part in Revelation is that the people would not
- 29:08repent. They didn't want it.
- 29:11They received it, they were given it, but they did not
- 29:15respond to it. And so because of that part, I
- 29:20just don't, I don't know where I don't know.
- 29:27I just don't. I don't recall the Scripture
- 29:30where God never pursued somebody and they just started seeking
- 29:34him on their own. I don't.
- 29:36I just don't know where that is. Anyway, it just seems like God
- 29:43initiates, He's the pursuer, and then we respond, is what it
- 29:47seems like to me. And he may pursue people through
- 29:51other people. So it doesn't mean that we're
- 29:54going to have a divine revelation from God.
- 29:57It could just be someone in our lives who shares the gospel with
- 30:02us. So why did people tolerate false
- 30:05prophets? The people were so desperate to
- 30:08hear messages of peace and prosperity that they apparently
- 30:11were willing to overlook blatant sin.
- 30:15It is sad commentary on the pathetic spiritual state of the
- 30:18people of Judah that not even their own immoral adulterous
- 30:22relationships disqualified false prophets from receiving a here
- 30:27hearing. That's kind of interesting.
- 30:29So those who are living in sin aren't going to be hearing from
- 30:35God, but they might be hearing from something.
- 30:38So that's again Galatians chapter 5 through the spirit,
- 30:43what spirit is present in a person if if we're hearing them
- 30:48give us information about God said this when spiritual leaders
- 30:54lead wicked lives, they inevitably take people down with
- 30:59them. There's more punishment for
- 31:01those who teach because of what they know when they don't help
- 31:09people come into the Kingdom. So does God have a specific plan
- 31:14for my life? This is talking about Jeremiah
- 31:17chapter 29, verse 11. No matter how much we desire to
- 31:22know God's will, He reveals His plans regarding the future of
- 31:26the world and the future of our lives on a selective basis.
- 31:31Consequently, some people strain to find clues or signs of God's
- 31:36will, as if they are mysteriously encoded in ways
- 31:39that only super spiritual people can decipher.
- 31:43Such a process is both frustrating and subjective.
- 31:46The Bible how does, however, tell us that we can be sure of
- 31:51several things that fit within God's purpose for each of us.
- 31:55While our plans may be upset, His purpose will prevail.
- 32:01We were put here to worship God, become part of His family, grow
- 32:08in spiritual maturity, serve others in church, in the church,
- 32:15and bear witness to the world of God's love and grace in Jesus.
- 32:23In addition, it is God's expressed will that we serve
- 32:28those who are less fortunate than we are.
- 32:30Jesus put it this way. Then the King will say to those
- 32:33on his right Come you, you who are blessed by my Father, take
- 32:39your inheritance, the Kingdom prepared for you since the
- 32:44creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave
- 32:46me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me
- 32:49something to drink. I was a stranger and you invited
- 32:52me in. I needed clothes and you clothed
- 32:54me. I was sick and you looked after
- 32:56me. I was in prison and you came to
- 32:57visit me. Truly, I tell you, whatever you
- 33:00did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of
- 33:04mine, you did for me. Finally, while God created each
- 33:10of us with our own personality, He wants us to be conformed to
- 33:15the likeness of His Son, Jesus Christ.
- 33:18He does not want anyone to perish, but instead desires
- 33:22everyone to repent, to have a change of mind that leads to a
- 33:27changed life. Why would or who would confuse
- 33:34mentally unstable people and prophets?
- 33:37Because of the dramatic and unusual manner in which some
- 33:40prophets delivered God's message, they were sometimes
- 33:43mistaken for mentally unstable people.
- 33:46Jeremiah wore a yoke. Isaiah went naked for three
- 33:50years. Ezekiel lay on his left side for
- 33:53390 days. A young prophet in Jehu's day
- 33:57was called a maniac because of his strange message.
- 34:01Eccentric as they often were in their behavior, true rofits were
- 34:06set apart from lunatics by the ultimate fulfillment of their
- 34:11messages. Why did Jeremiah bother with
- 34:14false prophets? Because they claimed to speak
- 34:17for God. False prophets held enormous
- 34:20potential influence. Jeremiah recognized that if they
- 34:24were left unchecked, they could punish the entire nation.
- 34:28They could push. I'm sorry.
- 34:29They could push the entire nation farther away from God.
- 34:34Furthermore, God knows who claims to speak for him and
- 34:38holds them to account. To falsely claim to be the
- 34:43Lord's spokesman spokesman is a grievous offence.
- 34:49So that ends chapter 29. And again, a lot about false
- 34:54prophets in there and repentance as well.
- 34:58So something for all of us to take note of.
