- 0:30Now let's get into the episode. Hello everyone and welcome back
- 0:34to the Doctor Randy show. I'm your host, Doctor Randy
- 0:38Boyett. Over the past year, we've
- 0:40watched one development change the trajectory of this industry.
- 0:44There are moments in an industry when a single shift can change
- 0:48everything, and prescription weight loss medications are one
- 0:51of those moments. They are not just influencing
- 0:54numbers on a scale, they are reshaping conversations around
- 0:58metabolic health, facial aging, body composition, longevity, and
- 1:02even how aesthetic practices operate.
- 1:05And yet, the public dialogue has been fragmented, driven by
- 1:08headlines and social media clips instead of structured education.
- 1:13That is where New Beauty made a decisive move.
- 1:16They introduced Step Beyond the Scale.
- 1:19It is a dedicated platform designed to bring clarity,
- 1:23credibility, and context to the weight loss medication journey.
- 1:27Joining me today is New Beauty CEO Mike Glaycar.
- 1:31Welcome back to the show, Mike. I'm excited for this
- 1:34conversation. Well, first of all, thanks for
- 1:36having me back on the show, and a lot has changed since the last
- 1:39time we spoke. Before we get into the platform
- 1:41itself, how are you viewing the weight loss medication
- 1:44conversation as it was unfolding?
- 1:46Well, GLP ones, that's been something that's been evolving
- 1:49for several years, right? But I really think last year,
- 1:522025, it ramped up quickly, right?
- 1:54And what we started to see in our data was so many consumers
- 1:58were on GLP ones, close to a third of our readership.
- 2:02But the challenges that they started mentioning to us were
- 2:04challenges they didn't foresee going on medication.
- 2:06So many of them got on the medication from a primary care
- 2:10physician or telemedicine, and they talked about liver health
- 2:13and kidney health that they didn't talk about the aesthetic
- 2:15changes that these consumers would start to see.
- 2:17And so by the time we interviewed these consumers,
- 2:20they were saying I have volume loss, I have hair loss, I have
- 2:23skin laxity, what do I do? And that's where I think the
- 2:26aesthetic industry in general really got involved with GLP
- 2:30ones and why we've seen such an increase over the past year.
- 2:33It's been an enormous change in the world, in our industry.
- 2:36I log into social media and everybody looks different,
- 2:38right? So it's quite a different world
- 2:40now. So as we dive a little further
- 2:43into the platform, what gap in the weight loss medication
- 2:47conversation did New Beauty see that led to creating Step Beyond
- 2:52the Scale? It all started with the data
- 2:54with Beauty Engine. We started hearing from
- 2:56consumers on some of the challenges they were having.
- 2:58And then when we went online to look at what resources were out
- 3:01there, you had this interesting gap, right?
- 3:03You had Reddit forums where you didn't know what you were going
- 3:07to get. You had some people say this is
- 3:08the best thing in the world. And you had some people who were
- 3:10put in fear content out there. And then you had the
- 3:13manufacturers websites that we go visas that found websites,
- 3:16but those were very restrictive in what they could say.
- 3:19And most of it was kind of just prescribing information and
- 3:21important safety information. And then you had social media
- 3:24where there was just a lot of content that was untrue.
- 3:27And so we saw a gap in the market where we said and New
- 3:29Beauty, we've always taken a lot of pride in creating content
- 3:32that has backing from the best experts in the world, right?
- 3:35The best dermatologist, plastic surgeons.
- 3:37And we said, there's nothing out there that's 100% focused on GLP
- 3:41ones, that's getting information straight from the experts and
- 3:45putting it all together. 1 curated spot.
- 3:48And that's where we decided to jump in with Stephie on the
- 3:50scale and build that platform for our consumers.
- 3:53And why was this the right moment for a new beauty to enter
- 3:57this space? We've been doing research on
- 3:59this for many years and we started to see 10% of our
- 4:02readers around GLT ones and 15% and 20%.
- 4:05And now all of a sudden we get to a point where a third of our
- 4:07readerships on GLT one and then we started getting the feedback
- 4:10from them. 40% are experienced in hair loss or hair fitting,
- 4:13right? We have consumers with volume
- 4:15loss and skin laxity and at that point when you have a third of
- 4:18your readership who's taking this type of medication, we knew
- 4:21that we had to be the resource. Fortunately, we have the know
- 4:24how, we have the relationships on the provider side and we have
- 4:27a huge amount of consumer reach. So we decided a third of our
- 4:30readers are on these medications and we have a significant number
- 4:33of other consumers who are considering it.
- 4:35It's the time to jump in. Do you think the initiative was
- 4:38driven more by consumer demand, physician feedback, or editorial
- 4:43insight? A combination of all of that.
- 4:46On the physician side, a lot of our partners were saying by the
- 4:49time we're seeing these patients, not that it's already
- 4:53too late because there's a lot of things that they can do, but
- 4:55they had already patients had lost 40 pounds, 50 LB coming to
- 4:59the office. They're experiencing major
- 5:00volume loss and skin laxity. And so the provider said to us
- 5:04like there's just no resource for consumers when they're
- 5:06getting on these medications to know what to expect.
- 5:09And as a provider, they're saying we would much rather have
- 5:12these patients know what to expect going in so that we can
- 5:15treat them holistically throughout the process.
- 5:17So that's the provider driven piece.
- 5:18And then consumers, again with the data, consumers saying, I
- 5:21didn't expect to see these changes, I wish I would have
- 5:24known and I wish I had resources for that.
- 5:26So then of course, bringing in that data.
- 5:28And then lastly, from an editorial standpoint, our
- 5:30editors were hearing this left and right in the field and we
- 5:32had so much information. So the answer to your question
- 5:35is physicians wanted a resource for their patients, patients
- 5:38wanted a resource for themselves.
- 5:39Our editorial team had the expertise and wanted to get the
- 5:41information out and we put it all together.
- 5:44And when you chose the name step beyond the scale, which is
- 5:48genius, I think, what broader idea were you trying to capture
- 5:52at that point? Well, a lot of the conversation
- 5:55and you look at trial data for some of these medications is all
- 5:58about weight loss, right? It was how much percentage of
- 6:01body mass was someone losing, right?
- 6:03And that's just a small piece of it, right?
- 6:06We have consumers who would lose 40 lbs and you would think
- 6:09they're going to feel great that their lives are changed.
- 6:11But many of them said, I've lost 40 lbs.
- 6:13I'm down to the weight I want, but my hair is falling out or
- 6:17I'm seeing skin laxity or skin texture issues.
- 6:20I look older. So step beyond the scale.
- 6:23Where that concept came from is like the scale is 1 number, but
- 6:26we need to go beyond that for all these additional changes and
- 6:29make sure that we address those that a consumer can lose 40 lbs
- 6:33but feel great about themselves and feel great about the way
- 6:36they looked. Because for us, and we saw this
- 6:38in the data, it was really sad to see a consumer who had made
- 6:41these lifestyle changes lost all this weight, but they still
- 6:43weren't happy because of some of the other changes.
- 6:45And conversely, we knew patients that had lost 40 lbs and had
- 6:48really taken care of their aesthetic as they lost weight.
- 6:52They continue to work out, they had the muscle mass they
- 6:54maintained and they felt phenomenal.
- 6:56So it's like, how do we get more of those patients and less of
- 7:00the patients who are unhappy? So this is a stand alone
- 7:05education platform and what made you build it on its own instead
- 7:10of just housing it within the traditional new beauty content?
- 7:14There were a few reasons we did that.
- 7:16First of all, New Beauty is a phenomenal platform.
- 7:18We have 20,000 articles on newbie.com, right?
- 7:21So when someone comes to our site, they're going to see all
- 7:24different information on hair and skin and cosmetic
- 7:26procedures, but if they're just interested in GLP ones, we
- 7:30wanted to have that stand alone site that was for that
- 7:33specifically. We also knew that there were
- 7:34patients that were interested in taking GLP ones who weren't
- 7:38quite in the aesthetic realm. So maybe they wouldn't have
- 7:40thought to go to the beauty as their first resource, but they
- 7:43would go to a dedicated site like Step Beyond the Scale as
- 7:47that resource. And the way we built that
- 7:49platform was really trying to provide expert content, video
- 7:53articles in all different journeys of someone's GLP P1
- 7:57decision making process. So for example, if someone's
- 8:00just considering taking GLP ones, but they want to know what
- 8:03to expect and they want to know what their options are, that
- 8:06would be journey one. And we have an amazing amount of
- 8:08content in journey one. And we actually have a quiz
- 8:10where consumers can go on step beyond the scale, take a quiz
- 8:13and it will map them into the journey if that's best fit for
- 8:15them. Journey 2 would be someone who
- 8:17just started taking GLP ones and they're going through some
- 8:19lifestyle changes. They want to know how to manage
- 8:21that. Journey 3 is someone who's lost
- 8:22more than 20 lbs and they're starting to see some of these
- 8:25aesthetic changes. And what does that mean?
- 8:26It means they need to know about biostimulators and fillers and
- 8:30neurotoxins and in office skin care and how to build that all
- 8:32together. And then Journey 4 is someone
- 8:34who's hit their goal away. But that's not the end of the
- 8:36journey, right? What does that mean now?
- 8:37How do they maintain it? With lifestyle choices, diet,
- 8:40exercise, things like that. So we built it as a standalone
- 8:42site so we would have the functionality for a consumer no
- 8:45matter where they are. The GLP with one journey to find
- 8:47value in the content. How did you ensure that all of
- 8:52the information is medically credible and responsible?
- 8:55I'm sure that was a task. Well, that was the number one
- 8:58task for us and always has been that new beauty.
- 9:00We are so fortunate in 21 years of doing this, the relationships
- 9:04that we build, We have an incredible board doctor Robert
- 9:07Singer and Mark Jewell, they head up our medical Advisory
- 9:10Board. So everything that we do is
- 9:12bedded through our board and our brain trust.
- 9:14But we also were able to tap into dozens of experts across
- 9:18the country to create content for us, right?
- 9:20And these were experts that had dealt with thousands of GLP one
- 9:24patients specifically first hand.
- 9:25And so they knew exactly what was going on in real world
- 9:29experience. So tapping into for those
- 9:30experts at New Beauty, we have amazing editors and content
- 9:33creators, but ultimately it's the experts, the dermatologist,
- 9:36plastic surgeons, the other providers that give us the meat
- 9:40of these articles and then we just bring it to life from
- 9:42there. OK.
- 9:43So, Mike, why do you think that New Beauty is uniquely
- 9:47positioned to lead this conversation?
- 9:51The conversation around GLP ones is medical on the one side,
- 9:55right? And then obviously New Beauty
- 9:56has the aesthetic piece. I think that we over the past 21
- 9:59years have built up a ton of credibility talking about really
- 10:02complex medical treatments and procedures, right, and the
- 10:05science behind them. And so it gives us the
- 10:08credibility to talk about things like GLP ones and weight loss
- 10:11medications, while also bringing forward the aesthetic piece,
- 10:16which is really at the angle that we're coming from and the
- 10:18aesthetic considerations. So I think newbie was really
- 10:21uniquely positioned here. And what I liked about it was we
- 10:24had a lot of consumers who, for example, Ron GLP one, but had
- 10:28never had treatments and procedures before.
- 10:30And now all of a sudden they were coming into the industry
- 10:33for the first time. So that was great for us because
- 10:35we saw an influx of new users who weren't consuming new beauty
- 10:38content before now they had lost weight, they were feeling great
- 10:41about themselves, and they were thinking about aesthetic
- 10:43treatments and procedures and now coming back into the new
- 10:46beauty fold. So it was a really cool way to
- 10:47expand our reach as well. It sounds like you've really
- 10:50captured even New Beauty's long term mission to step beyond the
- 10:55scale. Align with that.
- 10:56Yeah, For us, it's always to educate consumers to make the
- 10:59best choices for them. And what's always been our
- 11:02stance is we don't really care what consumers do, right?
- 11:05They can decide what to do. But we do care if they're
- 11:08educated. We educate consumers on
- 11:10everything from what skin care to use all the way to plastic
- 11:13surgery and everything in between.
- 11:14And GLP One certainly fall in between that, right?
- 11:17And so a more educated consumer can make better choices for
- 11:21themselves and their families. And we're just here to be that
- 11:23conduit for the education. And certainly right now with GLP
- 11:26One's, there's so much information out there right now.
- 11:29So let's get the expert opinions, let's create that
- 11:32content and let's have A1 credible source where consumers
- 11:36can get that information. And that's what we thought.
- 11:38You mentioned earlier the journeys, right and the platform
- 11:43is organized around Journeys. Why structure it that way?
- 11:46Tell me a little bit more about that.
- 11:49Where we are looking to get to at at New Beauty and I think
- 11:52this is the future of media is trying to get to a one to one
- 11:55relationship with our readers. Media in the past has always
- 11:58been you write an article, you send it out there, you get
- 12:00thousands or millions of people to read it.
- 12:03But for us, we want to get as customized to our reader as we
- 12:06possibly can. So it doesn't make sense for us
- 12:09to send an article to a consumer who's already on GLP Ones that
- 12:12says considering taking GLP Ones.
- 12:14Here's the things you need to know, right?
- 12:16We purposely built this platform so that we can have someone take
- 12:19the quiz, map them to content that is specific to them, that
- 12:23creates more that one to one relationship.
- 12:25And then they can go through that content knowing that
- 12:27everything they read is going to be specific to their situation
- 12:31and they're not going to be reading or wasting time on
- 12:33content that isn't relevant to them and where they're at.
- 12:36When someone lands on the platform for the first time,
- 12:40what do you want them to understand immediately?
- 12:43First and foremost, that there is content for them regardless
- 12:46of where they're at in their journey, right?
- 12:48So we love the fact that we have the quiz feature.
- 12:50It's very interactive. And so that's where we want
- 12:52consumers to start, Take the quiz, and then we'll map out the
- 12:55journey for you. But also I think what's
- 12:58important and we want them to realize right away is that this
- 13:00is an unbiased, credible source of information because
- 13:04ultimately we're seeing a lot of people share this with friends
- 13:06and family and GLP ones are becoming less and less taboo.
- 13:10People are actually talking about this now.
- 13:11You have friends, groups of friends who are sharing
- 13:15information and advice back and forth.
- 13:16So we're seeing a lot of sharing of this content to other people.
- 13:20And we want consumers as soon as they land on Step Beyond the
- 13:22scale to know. Finally, I found a one stop shop
- 13:25resource for all of the content around weight loss.
- 13:27And let me share this to other people who we can help with as
- 13:29well. You mentioned the quiz, right?
- 13:32And is the quiz meant to be kind of education almost, or is it
- 13:36really a personalization tool for how you deepen engagement?
- 13:41Certainly a personalization tool, yeah, very much so.
- 13:44Getting them the content that they want and need.
- 13:45And then when they sign up for newsletters from us, it allows
- 13:48us to customize information specific to them going forward.
- 13:51And again, I think that's the future of media.
- 13:53Even on the advertising side, I think as consumers, I don't mind
- 13:57receiving an ad if it's really relevant to me and it's
- 14:00something I'm interested in. Where ads get a little bit
- 14:03disruptive is when it's an ad that's not relevant to you.
- 14:06So I think the future of our business is let's make sure
- 14:08whether it's content, ads or anything in between, if we're
- 14:11going to send something to someone, let's make it as
- 14:13relevant to them as possible. And at New Beauty, how do you
- 14:17define success for this platform?
- 14:19Really. Reach.
- 14:20I think reach is the big thing and engagement, but what we love
- 14:24hearing, and this has been the biggest KPI, it's a softer KPI,
- 14:27but hearing from physicians that they're sharing this with their
- 14:30patients, they're putting it in their patient newsletters,
- 14:32right? Or patients are coming in and
- 14:34saying, hey, I'm thinking about taking GLP ones.
- 14:36And the providers are saying, oh, make sure to go to step
- 14:38beyond the scale. You'll find all the information
- 14:40that you need on there. So when providers start using us
- 14:42as that patient education resource and tool and we see our
- 14:46traffic ramp up significantly because of that, I think that's
- 14:49a true measure of success. So let's pivot for a minute to
- 14:53the impact and responsibility of these weight loss medications,
- 14:57right? There's so much information out
- 14:59there and like you said earlier, so much misinformation.
- 15:01So what misconceptions about the weight loss medications did you
- 15:06feel were most urgent to correct?
- 15:09Well, there were a couple of different things, both positive
- 15:12and some of the concerns around skin laxity and volume loss,
- 15:15right? First and foremost, I think you
- 15:17just had people on both sides of the spectrum of some people
- 15:21saying this is the best product ever, ever wants to be on this.
- 15:23We should have GLP ones in the water.
- 15:25And then you had people on the other side that said like, don't
- 15:27ever take this. It's not safe with no backing of
- 15:30science behind their claims. So for us, we wanted to make
- 15:33sure that we went to the experts, we went through the
- 15:35data and we were an unbiased source in the middle.
- 15:38And again, not promoting GLP ones, promoting people, not
- 15:41taking GLP ones, just being the resource and making sure that
- 15:44people felt comfortable making their own decisions.
- 15:47Now some of the data that we saw that was interesting was a lot
- 15:50of transformation in lifestyle changes.
- 15:53So individuals who are taking GLP ones who hadn't worked out
- 15:56in the past, they start losing weight, they start getting
- 15:58momentum. Now they're working out for the
- 16:00first time. They've changed their diet, of
- 16:01course, which is the MOA of GLP ones in the 1st place.
- 16:04They're drinking more water. So all of these things seem to
- 16:07be really positive lifestyle changes for the right consumer.
- 16:11And so we saw that as a positive.
- 16:13And then on the flip side, like I'd mentioned earlier, we did
- 16:15see a lot of patients saying about 22% of GLP One patients
- 16:19said that they were entering into aesthetics for the first
- 16:21time because they felt good about themselves.
- 16:24They had lost weight and now they were actually concerned
- 16:26about their appearance. And we thought that in our
- 16:28industry was a positive, having more people thinking about skin
- 16:31health and hair health and in other aspects of their health.
- 16:34Innocent. So after they're in the
- 16:37platform, they're going in the journeys, and they've spent some
- 16:41meaningful time on Step Beyond the Scale, what do you hope
- 16:45shifts for them emotionally while they're there and what do
- 16:49you hope they leave with changing emotionally?
- 16:52The hope always for us is that consumers understand there are
- 16:56options almost always for any concern or challenge that
- 16:59they're going through it, right? So for a consumer who's lost a
- 17:02lot of weight and is really down about the volume loss or
- 17:05aesthetic changes knowing, oh wait, there are options, right?
- 17:09And I can go see these plastic surgeons or dermatologists and
- 17:12there's injectable options, there's topical options, there's
- 17:14energy based device options, there's all these amazing
- 17:16options to help me get back to where I want to be.
- 17:19And then in general, just making sure that consumers feel really
- 17:22confident. The next step for us is always
- 17:25read the content and then talk to a provider.
- 17:28That's always the next step for us.
- 17:29So please of course, recommend board certified physicians to
- 17:33make sure that these patients are going to see them next.
- 17:35But the hope for most of our platforms is that a consumer
- 17:38comes, they read content, they feel really good about that, and
- 17:41then they can go to the selected provider for the next steps.
- 17:45All we hope to do is gain more education, right?
- 17:48Because the end of the day, it is a little confusing the
- 17:50messaging that's going out all over social media.
- 17:53So this is so important. When we talk about those
- 17:56conversations, which ones do you think are still missing?
- 18:00Like what's next for Step Beyond the Scale as far as which
- 18:04conversations we're still going to hit on with new beauty and
- 18:07you still want to address? Where I think there's a gap and
- 18:11this is less of the content maybe that we've produced, but I
- 18:13still think there's more opportunity for aesthetic
- 18:16providers to really proactively talk to their patients about GLP
- 18:20ones. Again, asking a patient if
- 18:22they're on GLP ones isn't offensive.
- 18:24It's not taboo, right? There's so many people on GLP
- 18:27ones. It's almost assumed at this
- 18:28point that you have patients that are but talking to them
- 18:31proactively and starting that conversation and it can be done
- 18:33so very easily where a provider says, are you on GLP ones?
- 18:37Are you considering them? The reason I ask is we have a
- 18:40lot of patients who consider GLP ones.
- 18:42They go get on the medication, they don't come back for six
- 18:44months and then they have all these aesthetic changes.
- 18:46So if you are considered in GLP ones, just know we have an
- 18:49entire line of options that we can treat you holistically
- 18:53throughout the process. So not only do you lose weight,
- 18:55but you look fantastic along the way.
- 18:57And that's like a very positive way to, to talk to patients.
- 19:00And we hope that happens more and more often.
- 19:02For us, a huge shift this year, huge shift was oral.
- 19:07We Govi being approved, right? It was the first branded oral
- 19:09GLP one that was approved. And and with that, a huge influx
- 19:13of patients. And we're seeing the numbers now
- 19:15it's exploding. And we had 70% of our readers
- 19:18who were taking injectable GLP. One said they would switch to an
- 19:21oral because they felt it was easier.
- 19:23They didn't like the self injectable at times.
- 19:25So now we're seeing a huge influx of new patients and also
- 19:28a tremendous amount of providers in our space, dermatologists and
- 19:31plastic surgeons and Med spas that are actually offering GLP
- 19:35ones within the practice. And our data actually indicates
- 19:38that patients want that. I think the future of aesthetics
- 19:41in Wellness is merging in health where these one stop shops where
- 19:45a consumer can come in, they get their aesthetic treatments and
- 19:48procedures. They also talk about skin
- 19:50health. They also talk about Wellness
- 19:51and hormone health and GLP ones. That's really the future of our
- 19:54industry and we're seeing physicians jump on board with
- 19:57that every single day and they're doing a really good job
- 20:00treating their patients. That's great.
- 20:02And anything we'll be adding to step beyond the scale or is
- 20:06there anything you're still building and working on?
- 20:08What can we expect? Without sharing too much, it's
- 20:12such a success step beyond the scale for us both in terms of
- 20:15traffic engagement and physician feedback that we are looking at
- 20:19building the same type of stand alone platforms in a number of
- 20:22different areas. And we're not able to announce
- 20:25those areas yet. But there's some really
- 20:26important areas that are tangential to aesthetics right
- 20:29now where we have a lot of consumer interest and so in the
- 20:32back and we're working hard to build those out.
- 20:34We can't wait to see it. So thanks so much for this
- 20:37conversation today, Mike. This is groundbreaking for our
- 20:40industry because this is our dedicated space to learn more.
- 20:44And I'm sure there'll be a lot more people logging in.
- 20:46And by the way, where can they find Step Beyond the Scale if
- 20:50they haven't found it already? Yeah.
- 20:52So you can search up Step Beyond the Scale on any search engine.
- 20:55GLP 1.newbeauty.com is the URL and then you'll see on a lot of
- 20:59our socials that were highlighting that content as
- 21:01well. Great.
- 21:02Well, is there anything else that you'd like to share with
- 21:04the viewers and listeners? I mean, thank you again for
- 21:07having me on. I think this is so important.
- 21:09And again, we're way past the age of taboo GLP one
- 21:12conversation. So it's our hope that providers,
- 21:15consumers, everyone has an open conversation about this.
- 21:18We learn from everyone's experience and we just improve
- 21:21patient outcomes, both in terms of weight loss but also
- 21:23aesthetic outcomes as well. Well, thank you so much for
- 21:26being on the show today, and we hope you'll come back and join
- 21:30us again soon. And to everyone listening, the
- 21:33conversation continues next week on the Doctor Randy Show.
